Rajasthan gang kidnaps City girl The girl was being pestered with marriage proposal from a Rajasthani youth, but she refused. He went missing soon after the girl’s disappearance. MOHD SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Parents of a 24year-old City college girl student are spending sleepless night since the past 17 days as their daughter has been missing since August 24 and she is believed to have been kidnapped by a young man and his friends from Rajasthan. Haseena Begum, a resident of Sai Ram Nagar in Saidabad, is an MSc student with Sidhartha College. She did not return home on August 24. Her mobile phone could not be reached. Her father, Abdul Ali, lodged a missing complaint with the

It was later learnt that one youth from Rajasthan, Anurag, had been pestering her to marry him but she refused. There was suspicion that the youth who was working in a private firm in the City was behind her disappearance as he too was missing.

Meanwhile, the anxious parents received a mobile call from her after several days. It is said she told her father that a gang of four young men has kidnapped her and kept in custody. As the line got snapped, the cyber police made enquiries and found that the call had been originated from Gandhi Chowk in Chitorgarh, Rajasthan. Immediately a sub-inspector was sent to the location but on arrival he noted that no such place name existed in Chitorgarh. The Hyderabad police chief has sought the help of Rajasthan police DP for assistance. Recently, however, news

came from Rajasthan that the murdered body of a girl of about 20 years was found at Bhelwada in Bagpur police station limits.

The body had head injuries and the police are trying to find out if the body has anything to do with Haseena.

he urban primary health centres (UPHC) which are supposed to be the sentinel against contagious diseases and centre of immunization programmes lay unattended, thanks to apathy of the government health department. Shortage of staff and lack of interest among doctors to serve the rural poor, higher officials taking their jobs lightly skipping inspection are a few of the causes quoted by those in the know. Most dispensaries have empty medicine racks, empty doctor chairs and senior nurses. The UPHCs are mainly responsible for immunization and disease control programmes—to stem the outbreak of malaria, polio, cholera and other seasonal diseases. Vaccination programme is in a shambles in the absence of doctors and adequate medical staff. Most of these centres are functioning with one doctor, 5 to 7 nurses and two ANMs. Often a visitor sees nurses doubling as doctors, prescribing medicines and treating hapless urban poor. Giving them a helping hand are the aayas (maids). There are total 85 UPHCs located in the twin cities, of which, 10 dispensaries are in the Old City, which register more than 50-200 patients a day. THE DECISION MAKERS

Seemandhra voters dominate the City

Their strength is their best protection, it is argued. Seemandhra people are estimated to have decisive say in 33 Assembly constituencies in Hyderabad-RR districts. Md INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Seemandhra people settled in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and its adjacent areas that fall under Ranga Reddy district will play a crucial role in deciding the fate of pro-Telangana political parties during the next general elections. The huge increase in the population of Seemandhra people residing in the Corporation and its surrounding areas make them an electoral force that can’t be wished away. According to an estimate, around 40 lakh Seemandhra people have settled down in Hyderabad and made the City their permanent home. Of the 40 lakh residents, about 30 lakh are eligible voters. These voters are spread across 33 Assembly constituencies. “Three generations of Seemandhra people have settled in Hyderabad and become an integral part of the separate Telangana state. No political party can undermine the role the Seemandhra people will play in the next general elections,” a Senior Congress leader and founder chairman of MSR Trust M Sai Sudhakar told Postnoon on Tuesday. He said that all political parties should become friends of all Seemandhra people after the division of the State. He said that the protection of Seemandhra residents and fulfilment of their aspirations would become the main agenda of all political parties during the

next Assembly polls. “The division of the State has turned the protection of Seemandhra public into a big issue. Some political parties created certain amount of apprehension in the minds of these people. The protection of Seemandhra people would emerge as the biggest issue for all political parties,” Sudhakar insisted. Recognising the importance of this fact, political parties are now planning to woo the Seemandhra people. Sai Sudhakar said that the

The main opposition Telugu Desam Party’s general secretary Sudeesh Rambotla also expressed similar views and said that his party would strive to protect the interests of the Seemandhra residents. The separate Telangana champion Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) party is also devising strategy to win the confidence of the people of Andhra and

Rayalaseema region. “We never treated Seemandhra settled in Hyderabad as our enemies. They are as much part of Telangana State as any other

BIFURCATION WOES

Why women participants outnumber men at meeting A whisper campaign is going on that tells women employees from Seemandhra that they would lose everything if they did not resist the bifurcation.

Md INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The recent meeting of Seemandhra employees at Lal Bahadur stadium demonstrated one unique thing. The meeting saw participation of women employees in huge number. The heavy turnout of women employees not only surprised the organizers but also led to an interesting debate among the political corridors of the state. The most interesting question that scratched everybody's mind was why did the women come in huge numbers to attend the seemandhra meeting by leaving their families behind? This correspondent made an attempt to find out the reasons which led to heavy turnout of women at the Seemandrha employees meet. According to the leaders of various employees' unions of Seemandhra region the first most important reason was the sense of insecurity prevailing in the minds of the women employees about the future of their children. "The women employees who also double up as mothers are worried about the education and future of their children after the division of the state. They think that they can't afford to provide high standard quality education and employment in 13 districts of Seemandhra region. The reason for this is that all the top notch educational institutions and Multi National Companies (MNC) are located in Hyderabad city. Whether it is Indian School of Business, Hyderabad Central University (HCU), English and Foreign Languages University

(EFLU), National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Indian Institute of Technology (IICT) and MNCs like Microsoft, IBM, Wipro, Infosys are based in Hyderabad. If the state is divided we can't afford such facilities in our entire life time in Seemandhra region," an women employees union leader of APNGO told Postnoon. AP Non-Gazetted Employees Union (APNGOU) president P. Ashok Babu also expressed similar views and said that the bond between Hyderabad and the Seemandhra people can't be

AROUND THE

CITY

severed by anything or by anybody. "The Hyderabad city has been the place of our residence for the last 56 years. Almost all sections of people from seemandhra region chipped in their own way for its development. The women employees’ participation simply reflected the emotional bond we struck with the

city," he said. Babu reiterated that the employees would continue to agitate for united Andhra Pradesh state.

POISONOUS CAMPAIGN However, reacting on the issue, a women employees’ leader from Telangana region alleged that the Seemandhra employees union leaders are scaring women employees by telling them that they would lose everything if they did not participate in their agitation. She added that the seemandhra employees' unions poi-

sonous campaign against the Telangana state was going on despite the strong commitment of Telangana people that they would continue treat the seemandhra people as thier siblings, "We never treated them as aliens. We always considered them as our siblings since they merged their state with Telangana region. We are still telling not worry about their security even after the division. But the Seemandhra employees' union continue to spew venom against the formation of T-state," she said.

LUCKNOW: The BJP on Wednesday criticised Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for giving a clean chit to his son and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav over the riots in Muzaffarnagar that left 38 dead. Questioning Mulayam Singh Yadav’s statement in Agra on Tuesday that the state government had done well to control the riots, BJP state spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said that with 38 dead and several injured and the army being called in for the first time in two decades, “what else

The girl, profusely bleeding and in trauma, is admitted to Niloufer hospital. The RGI police have launched a manhunt. What is more chilling is the fact that the suspect Santosh Kumar happens to be the girl’s relative. It is said that the girl’s father, Krishna is a fruit vendor who earns for the entire family of five. In view of the Ganesh festival, he and his wife along with their son had gone to Mozham jahi market to buy fresh fruits on Sunday. The girl was left in the care of their aged grandmother. The woman had reportedly gone somewhere nearby when Santosh came and fondled the girl. When she started crying he allegedly took out a knife and threatened her and the child was subjected to sexual assault. As the girl was threatened with death if she said anything to parents, she did not tell but she fell ill and began bleeding. The parents probed the matter and found out the truth. Krishna has lodged a complaint against his relative Santosh who has been missing since the incident.

Bill de Blasio wins New York primary AROUND THE

WORLD

NEW YORK CITY: New York exit polls showed that public advocate Bill de Blasio had won the Democratic primary election, a springboard to becoming the next mayor of the overwhelmingly Democratic city. The left-leaning 52-year-old was reported by local media to have a wide lead over his opponents, however it was not yet clear whether he would secure the 40 percent needed to avoid a runoff election. The city’s former financial controller Bill Thompson and openly gay city council speaker Christine Quinn, were slugging it out for second place, unofficial results showed. If no candidate scores an outright victory, a second round of voting will be held on October 1. Republican Joe Lhota, former public transport chief, is leading against his main opponent, billionaire businessman John Catsimatidis. If the win is confirmed, De Blasio will face off against the Republican candidate in an November 5 mayoral election. AFP

SYRIAN CRISIS

Obama puts off attacks A Russian plan to secure Syria’s chemical stockpile, prompted US president Barack Obama to delay strikes against the Assad regime.

STEPHEN COLLINSON feedback@postnoon.com WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama said it was too early to say if a Russian plan to secure Syria’s chemical weapons could forestall US air strikes, but vowed to give longshot diplomacy a chance. In a somber national address, Obama laid out his most precise, response yet to a chemical weapons attack on civilians in Syria last month, after days of confused diplomacy and contradictory messages from his administration. He warned Americans tired of bloody engagements abroad, that for reasons of national security and moral decency, they could not simply look away after innocent children were gassed to death in an attack he blames on President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. “The images from this massacre are sickening: Men, women, children lying in rows, killed by poison gas,” Barack Obama said in the 16-minute speech. Obama vowed to keep the US Navy on station off the

Syrian coast to keep up the pressure on Assad’s regime while the diplomatic track evolves. That warning, delivered in stern tones, may also have been meant as a sign to Russia that he would not stand for delaying tactics or endless diplomacy, which critics say is the inevitable result of Moscow’s initiative. US porn industry hits out The industry suspended filming last month after an actress tested HIV-positive. A second performer, announced on Twitter he too had tested positive. MICHAEL THURSTON Agence France-Press LOS ANGELES: US porn filmmakers who have suspended production after a number of actors reportedly tested HIVpositive accused critics of “political posturing” and making unfounded claims. Diane Duke, head of the Free Speech Coalition, a trade association for the adult entertainment industry, cast doubt on reports a fourth actor had tested positive for the virus behind Aids. She lashed out at the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), which has spearheaded a campaign to make condom use obligatory on porn film shoots, and has in the past represented actors who tested positive. “There is no evidence of a fourth case,” Duke told AFP, referring to reports over the

The suspension was lifted after a week, but it was reinstated Friday when a third case was reported to the Free Speech Coalition by an industry-affiliated doctor, according to The Los Angeles Times. “The moratorium is still in place and is nationwide,” said Duke. The latest HIV cases and filming suspensions are not the first in the US porn industry, based in the San Fernando Valley north of Los Angeles. Rent hikes push Myanmar’s poor into homelessness To buy land in prime areas of Yangon — a city with poor transport links, few modern condominiums and irregular electricity and Internet access — now costs up to $700 per square foot, several times higher than glitzy Bangkok. HLA HLA HTAY Agence France Presse YANGON: Soaring rents in Myanmar’s commercial capital Yangon have seen hundreds of poor families shunted from their homes, forcing them to turn to charity as their last buffer from life on the streets. Political transformation, which has swept the country since the quasi-civilian government took power in 2011, has seen sanctions lifted from the former pariah state and stoked rising investment interest in the perceived frontier market. But the changes have also fuelled rampant speculation in the commercial hub Yangon, squeezing the poor into homelessness. “Whole families came saying they had no place to live, nothing to eat, begging for help,” said 61year-old Khin San Oo, manager at a makeshift centre for the displaced in a Buddhist monastery in a scruffy suburb of the former capital. Abbott Ottamasara offered free plots on 30-acres of land at the Thabarwa — or ‘nature’ — compound 16 months ago and word has spread fast, drawing penniless families from Yangon and surrounding districts. More than 2,400 families have now built small shanties in the grounds an hour’s drive from downtown Yangon.

Hundreds of others, who cannot afford construction costs, are sheltering in a communal bamboo dormitory at the site, which is home to a meditation centre. Surging demand for property as Myanmar undergoes rapid change since shedding the isolation of junta rule has threatened to push more people from their homes, with rent hikes compounding low wages in and around the country’s most populous city. apartment, while sales prices have doubled or even trebled over the past two years in some neighbourhoods. Tin Tin Win, 57, says she was forced to move to the compound with her daughter, son, two grandchildren and husband, after the family were asked to pay six months in advance — around $300 — to renew the lease on their property. “Our rent went up several times... we couldn’t afford to stay in our house. That’s why we had to move here,” she said, adding that she was secure, if uncomfortable, in the cramped new lodgings. “My daughter said she

will keep us here for a while, because she can’t afford anywhere else,” she said wiping tears from her eyes. President Thein Sein has made slashing poverty rates a pillar of reforms in Myanmar, where the former military rulers neglected to build a state safety net during their corrupt, decades-long rule. But that goal appears far off. To buy land in prime areas of Yangon — a city with poor transport links, few modern condominiums and irregular electricity and Internet access — now costs up to $700 per square foot, several times higher than glitzy Bangkok. But while some — including major international organisations and companies — are willing to cough up, many fear the high costs are putting off investors and creating a dangerous bubble. “The whole world now knows that the land price here (in Yangon) is very expensive,” Than Oo, 64, managing director

Families have been forced out to satellite towns because of the high rents, he said, urging the “stabilisation of the real estate market”. In an effort to cool the market, the government has raised land taxes and has built some low-cost housing in the city suburbs — but critics say the apartments still cost around $20,000, which is well out of reach of most people.

Monks at the monastery have been unable to turn away the cascade of new arrivals. But staff say the land is now full, leaving the abbot scratching around for donors with space to spare for the needy. Myint Nwe, who lives in the monastery’s stable-like dormitory with her nine-strong family, is grateful for the lifeline offered by the abbot. “My husband had a stroke two years ago. After that we had nothing to eat,” said the motherof-five, explaining how they came to the monastery, as her husband sat expressionless next to her. While she is able to sell fruit to buy occasional snacks for her children or medicine for her husband, Myint Nwe like many others in the monastery housing, can see no way back to independence. “I want to live in my own house and run my own business,” she said. “But I have no savings and my husband is sick.”

Five steps India must take to restore global confidence RAHUL SINHA feedback@postnoon.com

he recent Global Competitiveness Report 2013-14, ranking India at No. 60, leaves no doubt that these are exceptionally dire times for the Indian economy. This World Economic Forum report of Sep 4 puts India 31 places below its emerging market peer China and barely ahead of Russia; it is India's lowest rank in this survey. Concerns on India's lack of transport, information and communications technology (ICT) and energy infrastructure are "largely insufficient and illadapted to the needs of the economy". This is truly a reflection on India's lack of commitment to economic development. The report highlights serious concerns voiced by Tata Sons Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata last month, when he said: "We have lost the confidence of the world. We have been slow to recognise that in the government." The current economic scenario is no less grave than the 1991 crisis. The government is in a state of policy paralysis. A trust deficit irks foreign companies in India. Economic growth tests a new low every month. Independent studies talk of rampant corruption. The government in an Ostrich-like approach refuses to address serious threats, terming

piecemeal approach does not work and builds no resilience. hird, India needs to get started on the path of economic diplomacy besides focussing on the diplomacy of terrorism and security. The fact is developed markets have influence today, but emerging markets will influence tomorrow; so we need to better our relationship with emerging markets. The US diplomatic corps in India is bigger than the Indian diplomatic corps globally. India's diplomatic capability is disproportionate to its responsibility. ourth, government should give bigger responsibility to chambers of commerce and the chambers need to share their research and opinions with the government as a bridge between the government and industry. They also have to take up larger responsibility in marketing the nation on behalf of the government and building Brand India. ifth, India needs to introduce single window entry solution policy like few other countries. Countries with a growth risk are looking towards a 25-year plan while India is not even looking at the next five years. India needs to change this and move forward if it wishes to be a significant player in the economic history of the 21st Century. (Rahul Singh teaches Competitiveness in Emerging Markets at BIMTECH)

The political will is at its lowest in the last few decades, operational efficiency of the government is analogous to the pre-liberalization era and there is visible negotiation for development between inclusive growth and economic growth. However, they ought to go parallel. Since India cannot remain impervious in this globalised and integrated economic eco-system, it has no option but to change and be dynamic in its performance. Delhi rape broke wall of silence but no let-up in attacks For all the welcome changes introduced since the Nirbhaya rape case, too many people in authority have yet to take on board the lessons learned. AMMU KANNAMPILLY Agence France-Presse NEW DELHI: The fatal gang rape of an Indian student sparked mass protests, tougher sex laws and police reforms but the tide of violence against women shows little sign of abating. Activists say the collective outrage over the attack on the 23year-old has helped persuade some victims to break their silence and end a longstanding cultural taboo surrounding any discussion of rape. But a string of other multiple sex assaults, including of foreign tourists and of a photojournalist on assignment in Mumbai last month, has highlighted the continuing dangers facing women. And campaigners say that for all the welcome changes introduced since the student's killing, too many people in authority have yet to take on board the lessons learned. "The people have woken up to rape but in many ways the authorities still haven't," said Ranjana Kumari, director of the non-profit Centre for Social Research. Kumari said other victims had been inspired to speak out by the 23-year-old's courageous fight for life, which ended when she suffered multiple organ fail-

ure nearly a fortnight after the December 16 attack. "People would never even utter the word rape earlier, but the silence is ending now," she told AFP. Kumari cited a recent case when widely broadcast reports of the gang rape of a photojournalist in Mumbai last month spurred another woman to testify for the first time that she too had been attacked in July by some of the same suspects. However Kumari said the legal system still betrayed a "deep lethargy". While the four convicted on Tuesday of the student's murder and rape had their cases dealt with in a fast-track court, the defence team was still able to spin out the trial for more than eight months. Other rape trials however are still waiting to be heard years after the alleged attacks while campaigners say that the mindset of judges needs to be changed as well. A Delhi judge who cleared a defendant last month of sexually assaulting his maid upset campaigners when he rued the "unprecedented surge in filing of false rape cases" after the December gang rape. The attack had created a climate in which "the mere statement of a lady that she has been

AROUND THE

raped, came to be taken as gospel truth", the Press Trust of India quoted judge Virender Bhat as saying. Police in Delhi, which has been dubbed the rape capital of India, registered more than 800 rapes during the first six months of 2013, more than double the number recorded during the same period the previous year. Suman Nalwa, deputy commissioner of Delhi Police's special unit for women and children, said the rise reflected a greater confidence among victims to come forward.

Victims rarely get sufficient assistance from authorities to cope with the traumatic aftermath of sexual assault, with many officials continuing to treat rape survivors insensitively. "The numbers are high because there's more reporting of crime, which reflects increased confidence among complainants," Nalwa told AFP. The public outcry over the handling of sexual assault cases pushed officials in Delhi to revive a "gender sensitisation" programme for all police personnel that originally ran from 2008-2011. It also set up more telephone helplines for victims and established a 24-hour helpdesk for women at every police station in Delhi, Nalwa said. "Earlier, gender violence would have to take a backseat, compared with other crimes, but now it is seen as high priority," she said. "We monitor these cases at the highest levels of the force." Campaigners acknowledge that the government, stung by outrage over the December 16 attack, has taken an important

step forward by strengthening anti-rape legislation, which was approved by parliament in March. The new law means that sex offenders can now face the death penalty if a victim dies and it includes provisions to punish police officials who fail to register assault or harassment cases. Kavita Krishnan, an activist for the All India Progressive Women's Association, said such changes were a vindication of the protests. "I think the rest of the world also has a lot to learn from the struggle in India and how a struggle against sexual violence can be a mass movement," she told AFP. But other activists like Kumari say deeper changes are needed if Indian authorities are serious about tackling sexual violence. Victims rarely get sufficient assistance from authorities to cope with the traumatic aftermath of sexual assault, with many officials continuing to treat rape survivors insensitively. "It's a comprehensive law with a stringent punishment framework, but it's not enough," said Kumari of the new legislation. "We have tens of thousands of rape cases pending and very few convictions, which doesn't send a strong message at all."

MERKEL FACES GREEN SCARE GERMANY AT THE POLLS FRANK ZELLER

G

erman Chancellor Angela Merkel stunned the world in 2011 by deciding to scrap nuclear power for renewables, but as election day approaches, a fight has broken out over how to pay for the clean energy drive. The topic has become an issue in the run-up to the September 22 election as the added cost of the shift to Europe’s top economy — 20 billion euros ($27 billion) this year — has translated into higher bills for Germany’s consumers. Generous state incentives for solar, wind and biogas have driven up prices, which are now among Europe’s highest and set to rise 20 percent more next year, topping 1,000 euros annually for the average three-person household. While the Green party’s former environment minister Juergen Trittin once promised the policy would cost each citizen “no more than a scoop of ice cream,” the current minister, Peter Altmaier, has said he could eat his way through “the entire ice cream menu” for the money now being spent. In their one and only TV debate earlier this month ahead of the vote, Merkel clashed with her election rival, Peer Steinbrueck from the opposition Social Democrats (SPD), who called her handling of the policy

— known as the “Energiewende” — “a disaster.” Merkel said she was “more convinced than ever it was the right choice” in the light of Japan’s ongoing struggle with its stricken reactors after the 2011 Fukushima disaster, which prompted her about-turn. “The world is convinced: if anyone can manage it, it’ll be the Germans. It’s not easy, but we can do it and we will benefit from it in the long run as an export nation.” But Steinbrueck charged that “the management of this energy transition is a disaster ... it is the biggest brake on investment we have.” Both of the top candidates agreed on one point: that after the elections, they would take steps to bring down the cost of the ambitious and complex project, which Altmaier once dubbed “open heart surgery” on the national economy. The cost of the energy shift stems from a law introduced by an SPD-Greens government in 2000 that guaranteed wind and solar farms — many of which are community-run — priority access to the grid and premium prices for 20 years. As a result, Germany now produces a quarter of its electricity through renewables. Though not known as a sunkissed country, Germany now has the world’s highest solar power capacity, mainly in the south, while the north is dotted with hundreds of wind farms. More offshore windmills in the pipeline will generate output equivalent to eight nuclear plants.

The goal is to produce at least 35 percent of Germany’s power from renewables by 2020 and raise the level to 80 percent by mid-century. This would also cut air pollution and carbon emissions, wean the economy off energy imports and protect it from price swings.

VICTIM OF ITS OWN SUCCESS But the policy has become a victim of its own success. While wholesale electricity prices have fallen — in part due to a resurgence in cheap, dirty coal — the green energy producers keep receiving their high guaranteed prices, sending overall energy

bills ballooning. Merkel’s government has already cut incentives for solar power and wants to do the same for wind. Opposition parties charge that the real problem is exemptions Merkel’s government has awarded to more than 2,000 energy-hungry companies who successfully argued that paying more for the clean energy would harm their global competitiveness. Trittin, a top Green party candidate in the election, has accused Merkel of wanting to “put the brakes on the energy transition so that coal and nuclear have a future in Germany and Europe.” The Greens have proposed a

new energy ministry to tackle all aspects of the mega-project, including massive delays in building new power lines that are opposed by many local residents. Germany’s biggest union, IG Metall, last month warned of a “catastrophe” in the energy sector as “electricity is becoming more expensive, CO2 emissions are on the rise, and supply security now depends on old lignite power plants.” The union accused Merkel of endangering the clean energy drive and the 200,000 jobs that rely on it and demanded “a very large coalition of all political and social forces to end the paralysis in the energy transition”.

EDITORIALS High networth — so what? Nature too is god

I

t goes without saying the Indian economic set up, its bureaucratic systems and the governments it chooses to rule have collectively failed to ensure equitable distribution of wealth among the people of various segments in all these years. What a paradox one would find when the country, the most populated by geographic measure, has a currency that nosedives each day to a new low while its super rich population has been growing diametrically opposite. Here comes the latest — rupee may be going abegging but the strength of the high net worth (HNI) individuals has been growing in India. India, say reports from London, has 16 percent share of the HINIs in the world. And, the country is home to 103 billionaires. Only Japan and China are ahead of India. Is it something to cheer about? Not by a jugful. HNI growth has no relation to the welfare of the mases nor is it a measure of a buoyant economy. It shows the government of the day makes it easier for those who are rich to become super rich making the situation conducive for them. It is beyond doubt that India has strayed far away from its socialist ideals and equitable distribution of wealth. A welfare state has now come to be understood as a token populism indulged in by the ruling political parties at the time of elections. Food Security Bills for instance. The country whose economy is in the red is talking of squandering another shoals of millions of rupees in the name of food security. Making food available at reasonable prices is the sane thing any government worth its salt should have done.

In the zest of spiritual pursuit, we must not forget that it was human deluge and its fallout that was the cause of the natural (man-made) disaster. Piety is fine, but when we spit in the face of the omnipresent god/goddess — the nature — the result will be just the same. We must introspect and correct our relations with this deity before anything else.

Cinema FROM THE REELS

World Trade Centre (2006)

D

irected by Academy Award winner Oliver Stone, this movie is based on the lives of two officers assigned to New York City’s Port Authority. The two policemen, John Mclouglin (Nicholas Cage) and William J Jimemo (Michael Pena) have to risk their lives to evacuate the towers after the attack. However, as the building begins to rumble they get trapped in the wreckage. While they are trapped for hours they speak to each other, think of their families and realise the importance of life. Eventually, they survive and are united with their families. The film celebrates courage and endurance of not just these two but the entire nation coming together in the face of a tragedy.

New York (2009)

F

ollowing the 9/11 attacks, hundreds of innocent South Asians, especially Muslims were suspected, detained and inhumanly tortured by the FBI. This blockbuster Bollywood flick is the story of one such man, Sameer Sheikh (John Abraham) who is detained for a period of nine months as a suspected terrorist, all because of his religion. He is tortured mentally and physically. He is eventually released because of lack of evidence and Sameer decides to have his revenge. He plans to bomb the FBI building in order to get back at the ruthless officials who tortured him.

TERROR TALES Making a film based or centered around one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in recent history can prove to be quite a handful, but there are some filmmakers who took up the challenge to tell their stories. On the occasion of the 12th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, we list five films which were themed around the event.

The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2013)

T

he film, directed by Mira Nair, takes place in the immediate aftermath of September 11, 2001, and centers on Changez (Riz Ahmed), a young Pakistani man working on Wall Street who may or may not have ties to radical Islamic extremists. The Reluctant Fundamentalist also explores issues many Arab Americans have had to face living in the US following the 2001 terror attacks. Sutherland, who plays a Wall Street executive, said he was specifically drawn to The Reluctant Fundamentalist because of its post-9/11 themes.

Hidden (2005)

M

United 93 (2006)

O

ut of the four hijacked planes on September 11, only one failed to hit the target area. It is believed that the passengers of this flight fought back and attempted to enter the cockpit, thereby forcing terrorists to lose control of the plane. However, the plane crashed in an open area near Shanksville, Pennsylvania killing everyone on board. Drawing on countless reports and transcripts of the phone calls the victims made before they died, this is as much a rigorously researched indictment of the faulty procedures at air-traffic control centres in New York and Boston as it is a human drama.

ichael Haneke’s Hidden is a brilliant 9/11 film. Perhaps this director’s fascination with visiting a terrible revenge on the placid and conceited western middle classes found its greatest expression in a surveillance nightmare that was not specifically about 9/11, but nonetheless spoke brilliantly about the new anxieties and nightmares that 9/11 conjured up. On September 11 2001, America and the world had no choice but to watch the disaster on live television, watch the towers burn and then collapse – just helplessly sit there and watch. That’s what Daniel Auteuil, a famous television presenter in Paris, fronting an arts review programme, who finds that someone is spying on him with a hidden video camera, and sending him the tapes, does.

Breast Cancer deaths in younger, unscreened women New breast cancer research reveals a significant death rate among women under 50 who forgo regular mammograms and casts doubt on recent screening guidelines from a US panel of experts.

T

he findings support the merit of regular mammograms, especially for younger women, said study researcher Dr. Blake Cady, professor emeritus of surgery at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. “I would propose that women start screening at age 40,” Cady said. Younger women tend to have faster-growing, more aggressive tumours, experts say. When mammograms should start and how often they should be repeated has been a controversial subject. In 2009, the US Preventive Services Task Force, a panel of experts that makes recommendations about health practices, said women aged 50 to 74 should get screening mammograms every two years. Women under 50, the panel said, should talk to their doctors and decide whether to be screened based on potential benefits, such as early detection, and harms, including over-treatment and anxiety caused by false-positive results. The American Cancer Society and other organisations, however, have continued to recommend annual screening beginning at age 40 for women at average risk. More than 40,000 women die of breast cancer in the United States each year. For the new study, published online September 9 in the journal Cancer, researchers evaluated more than 600 breast cancer deaths, looking back at mammography records and other details. Seventy-one per cent of the deaths occurred among unscreened women, most of them younger, Cady found. Half of all the breast cancer deaths occurred in women under age 50, while only 13 per cent of the

women who died of breast cancer were 70 and older. For the study, Cady and his colleagues tracked invasive breast cancer cases from their diagnoses, between 1990 and 1999, until 2007. Patients were treated at Partners HealthCare hospitals in Boston. The researchers had access to mammography use, surgery and pathology reports, and dates of death. Cady’s team used a technique called “failure analysis,” in which scientists look back to see what might have gone wrong. “It’s the converse of a randomized trial, which starts at point A and follows people until the end of the study,” Cady said. “We follow people who have died and go backward to their original diagnosis and find out the details.”

The bottom line is that screening doesn’t reduce the risk of getting breast cancer, but it does reduce the risk of dying from it Overall, the study also showed an increase in breast cancer survival coinciding with the emergence of mammography. Half of women diagnosed with breast cancer in 1969 died within 13 years after diagnosis, compared to about 9 per cent of those diagnosed between 1990 and 1999 who were included in this study. Although some experts have credited the decline in breast cancer death rates to improved treatments, the study shows that’s not the whole story, Monsees said. “This paper shows the decline is primarily due to earlier detection and better

screening,” she said. Frequent screening is even more important in younger women than in older woman, she added. Tumors in older women typically grow slower than in younger women. The bottom line: “Screening doesn’t reduce the risk of getting breast cancer, but it does reduce the risk of dying from it,” Monsees said. Robert Smith, director of screening for the American Cancer Society, offered this perspective: “Regular screening was associated with a much, much lower likelihood of dying [from breast cancer],” compared to no screening or long-ago screening.

One-third of deaths among those who did get screened regularly were attributed to “interval cancers,” those detected in between the mammograms done every two years. Although this shows that getting regular mammograms doesn’t entirely eliminate the risk of dying from breast cancer, Smith said, “the message here is that mammography is a good part of your prevention plan.” If the cancer is detected early, options for breast-conserving surgery are greater and the risk of dying from the cancer is reduced, he said. Women were described as

unscreened if they had never had a mammogram or it had been more than two years since their last mammogram. The findings confirmed the benefits of earlier screening, some experts said. “[The study] presents a very compelling argument in favor of screening beginning at age 40 on an annual basis,” said Dr. Barbara Monsees, chairwoman of the American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Commission, who was not involved in the research. “It corroborates what we have known for a long time.” Source: Webmd

Technology GREEN TECH

POWER TO THE PEOPLE GERMAN ISLAND SHOWS HOW IT’S DONE FRANK ZELLER Agence France Presse PELLWORM: The clock may tick a little slower on the remote, windswept German island of Pellworm, but when it comes to renewable energy, it has long been ahead of its time. Home to about 1,000 people and three times as many sheep, the sleepy North Sea outpost of reed-roofed homes, set amid vast tidal mudflats, has for decades been a pioneer in solar and wind power. Long before Germany’s 2011 post-Fukushima energy transition, it started to make its own clean energy -- in fact about three times as much as it needs, allowing it to “export” the rest to the mainland. And like a growing number of German communities, Pellworm has made sure the shift toward a zero-carbon future is driven not by big energy companies but by local people who earn a healthy profit in the process. “It started in the early 1980s when different types of windmills and solar panels were tested here. Back then the technology was in its infancy,” says island Mayor Juergen Feddersen. “That’s when we first became known as the renewable energy island.” At first glance, Pellworm does not look like a high-tech pioneer. The island has one police officer, one traffic light and one supermarket. Half a dozen prawn fishing boats line

the picturesque harbour. With a history of catastrophic floods, the islanders are well-sensitised to climate change and rising seas. At high tide Pellworm is two metres (seven feet) below the water level, protected only by dykes. In centuries past, anyone who damaged the grass-covered sea defences faced the harshest punishment. “They were buried in the dyke, dead or alive,” says island historian Walter Fohrbeck. Today the community deals with the threat of high seas in a more benign manner. Thanks to a German law which guarantees citizen-producers premium prices for the clean energy they sell over 20 years, the people of Pellworm, like several hundred other German communities, have become “energy farmers”. Now the biggest structures on the island, aside from a lighthouse and a church dating from 1096, are eight 67metre high windmills, set far from the tourist sites so as not to spoil the view. “We are well aware of climate change, we live right on the sea and must recognise that ocean levels are rising,” said Kai Edlefsen, 50, an organic cattle farmer who also runs the local windpark. “We can’t save the world alone, but we can do our part

Home to about 1,000 people and three times as many sheep, the sleepy North Sea outpost has for decades been a pioneer in solar and wind power. for a better climate tomorrow.” The windpark, owned by 40 local families, can power 400 households. “We have realised the idea of the citizens’ wind farm ... this has been key to gaining the acceptance of the local population,” said Edlefsen, who is also deputy mayor. Many homes and barns have also been fitted with south-facing photovoltaic panels on their roofs, also set up with government incentives. To keep the lights on dark and windless days, a biogas plant turns shredded corn and manure into methane to make electricity. The surplus heat keeps the town hall and a clinic warm and cosy and heats a public swimming pool. Fohrbeck said Pellworm thus saves 5,500 tonnes of CO2 a year — offsetting the greenhouse emissions of 500 people “on the mainland”. To further green the island, the local administration has subsidised energy-saving electric appliances and used heatimaging cameras to help locals see where their homes are leaking warmth to improve insulation. So far, Pellworm has exported the surplus electricity to the mainland, via an undersea cable which in turn

also supplies Pellworm with backup power when needed. A new research project aims to take the island one step further — to eventual allday, everyday power self-sufficiency. At the site of the island’s solar-wind hybrid park, power company E.ON Hanse, together with a host of partners, has this week begun to trial various storage technologies and a so-called smart grid system. There are shipping-container sized battery units -one using the lithium-ion technology known from mobile phones, the other the so-called Redox-Flow system. The project also will equip 10 households with fridgesized batteries that will be fed by their solar panels. In another 20 homes, electric heating units will double as power storage devices. A future “smart grid” would intelligently balance supply and demand, turning on washing machines at optimum times and using electric car batteries as integrated storage devices. In the long run, says Fohrbeck, the island wants to be not just “electricity-positive” but “energy-positive”, by also phasing out the petrol used in cars and the oil in residential heating. The island’s growing reputation as a clean, green getaway is helping. As more tourists arrive seeking climate-friendly holidays, a Hamburg investor this year set up shop on Pellworm. He offers four small Renault electric cars for rent, with which tourists can zip around the island.

Independent music doesn’t get enough attention:

Ayushmann Khurrana A

ctor-singer Ayushmann Khurrana, who took the music world by storm with his soft Punjabi romantic song “Paani da rang” in his acting debut “Vicky Donor”, is now set to launch a single. But he rues how independent music still has to struggle to get support. He is ready to release his own independent song O heeriye under the Yash Raj Music label. “I think with independent music, it’s difficult to grab more eyeballs in our country. You hardly get any support from music channels or radio stations. It is not even supported by the narrative of any film,” Ayushmann told IANS. After the success of Paani da rang, the 28-year-old sang two more songs — Tu hi tu and Saddi gali — for his second Bollywood film Nautanki Saala. The video jockey-turned-actor accepts that being a known face helped his music gain recognition. “I wouldn’ t have got that support if I was not an actor or if my previous songs were not big hits. I think in India, cricket and cinema are two big entities and if you do something good in these two, then you are revered and you get this public support,” Ayushmann told IANS. O heeriye, a soft Punjabi rock track is on similar lines as his earlier hits Paani da rang and Saddi gali, but

After the success of his songs, Paani da rang, Tu hi tu and Saddi gali, Ayushmann Khurrana is all set to launch a single.

Ayushmann says it has completely different emotions attached to it. “It is different than the other two as far as the lyrics are concerned because Paani da rang and Saddi gali were more emotional. They were also in the heartbreak zone, but this one is quite happy. It’s when you see a girl for the first time and fall in love and get into a steady relationship,” he explained. Asked if he plans to launch his own music album anytime soon, he

said, “I think it’s slightly difficult and impractical because I have other projects. I had a gap of 10 days, so I could come up with this song.” After being a video jockey, an actor, a singer and assistant director, Ayushmann seems quite content with his choice of career and feels artists should experience everything in the film industry. “One should be a part of everything in filmmaking. I also assisted Shoojit Sircar in Hamara Bajaj. So I think it’s just about being a part of the whole filmmaking process — music, production or anything. I think you should enjoy being in the industry and honour it. It’s great that I got the opportunity,” he said. He clarified that being multi-talented was never his intention. “I think it’s great if you have multiple talents. Although there was no intention to be multi-talented. I think even if you have one talent and you are giving your best to that, that is enough,” he said.

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

LORD OF THE RINGS

Mayweather revels in ‘easy route’ Mayweather, who Forbes lists as the world’s highest paid athlete, has been criticized for dodging a mega fight with Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao. HOLLYWOOD: Floyd Mayweather says his undefeated record has been partly built on the backs of handpicked opponents who didn’t always provide the toughest fights but did help him become the world’s best paid athlete. “Sometimes they say, ‘Well, Floyd Mayweather’s opponents was handpicked.’ That’s a good thing,” Mayweather said during a conference call with reporters to hype Saturday’s world title fight against Mexico’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. “When I sit back and I think about my

career, I say ‘you know what? I had a cool career. I didn’t take any punishment’. If they say these guys were handpicked, they was handpicked to make $60 million, then you know what? Keep handpicking them. If they’re going to keep paying, keep handpicking them.” Mayweather has been criticized for dodging a potential mega fight with Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao. The two have tried several times over the past few years to get the deal done for what would likely be the biggest and most lucrative fight in boxing history. But each time negotiations broke down when they couldn’t come to terms on a variety of

issues, including drug testing and share of the revenue and purses. The fight with Alvarez is the second in Mayweather’s six-bout, 30month contract with Showtime that could pay him more than $200 million. Mayweather’s guaranteed purse for the Alvarez fight is reported to be a record $41 million which would surpass the previous record of $32 million he received for fighting Guerrero. Organizers are also hoping that this fight will eclipse the 2.44 million record pay-per-view sales and sales of more than $130 million racked up by the Mayweather and Oscar de la Hoya fight in 2007. AMERICA’S CUP

IOC now dances to Bach’s tunes

Once again Oracle proved unable to hold onto an early race lead, and after losing by more than a minute called for the postponement of the day’s second race.

Bach said during his campaign he had taken particular care not to make promises to any of the IOC members so he didn’t start his eight-year spell owing anyone anything.

PIRATE IRWIN Agence France-Presse BUENOS AIRES: Newly-elected International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach coolly dismissed suggestions he owed his election victory on Tuesday to Kuwaiti IOC member Sheikh Ahmed al-Sabah. The 59-year-old German — who trounced his five rivals to win in the second round with 49 votes — had been accused by Swiss rival Denis Oswald on Monday, who spoke of his close business ties with Kuwait.

Indeed Bach’s close friendship with the Sheikh was lampooned in an Argentinian newspaper last week. A cartoon on the front page showed a grinning Sheikh with his thumb up in the air wearing a T-shirt with Bach’s image on it. Bach, though, said during his campaign he had taken particular care not to make promises to any of the IOC members so he didn’t start his eight-year spell owing anyone anything. “At my presentation to the IOC members in July in Lausanne I was the candidate who made it very clear to them

that I do not make any promises with regard to issues or personal requests,” said Bach in reply to a question regarding his ties with the Sheikh. “In all my conversations there was not a single promise being made. This allows me when I go to Lausanne next Tuesday to start with a white sheet of paper so there is no form of commitment to anybody.” Bach, as president of the German NOC, is a member of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), of which the Sheikh is president. But he insisted he was not beholden to the Kuwaiti, arguing, “...if my own constituents [those voting IOC members belonging to ANOC] are not supporting me then if you don’t have their support you have made a mistake.” He added: “Secondly you cannot win the elections for IOC President with the support of one person alone and you know the IOC members — they are very strong individual personalities.

Oracle back to the drawing board SAN FRANCISCO: Team New Zealand ran away with the fifth race of the America’s Cup on Tuesday, leaving reeling Oracle Team USA searching for answers in their bid to keep yachting’s coveted prize. Once again Oracle proved unable to hold onto an early race lead, and after losing by more than a minute called for the postponement of the day’s second race. Each team has one postponement card it can play to delay a race for any reason. “We need to go back and regroup,” admitted Oracle skipper Jimmy Spithill. “We feel they have an edge on us at the moment, especially upwind. We need to do a bit of work here and we’re going to play the card,

strategically, and hopefully improve in time for the next race.” Oracle won the start and led the first two legs. But a bold attempt at a foiling tack saw them slow dramatically. “It wasn’t the greatest tack either,” Spithill said. “We got a bit out of phase as well.” New Zealand won the race — sailed in winds of 18 to 23 knots — by 1:05, and seized back the momentum Oracle had gained with a victory in race four on Sunday. “It’s a tough way to win races, but it’s working for us,” Barker said of his crew’s latest comefrom-behind victory. The Kiwi’s fourth victory of the series leaves them needing five more wins to seize the Cup from Oracle. AFP

ASHES DOWN UNDER: PREVIEW

PAK IN ZIMBABWE

‘Be more like Warner!’ Broad is set to become the England player Australian fans love to hate following his controversial decision not to walk in the first Ashes Test.

LONDON: Former England captain David Gower believes Stuart Broad can win over fans in Australia during the upcoming Ashes series if he follows the lead of David Warner. Broad is set to become the England player, above all others, Australian fans love to hate following his controversial decision not to walk in the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge this season.

David Gower said the best way for Broad to defuse any ill-feeling was to respond with a smile, much as Warner did with irate England fans. England won that Test by just 14 runs and went on to take the series 3-0, with Broad producing a match-winning return of six for 50 in their 74-run fourth Test victory in Durham last month. But Broad’s decision to stand his ground on his Nottinghamshire home ground still rankled with Australia coach Darren Lehmann, even though Australians have traditionally refrained from walking and instead waited for the umpire’s decision. Former Test batsman Lehmann was fined by the International Cricket Council

after calling on Australian fans to “get stuck into” Broad in the return series, adding he hoped the fast-medium bowler “cries and goes home”. Gower though suggested the best way for Broad to defuse any ill-feeling was to respond with a smile, much as Warner did when England fans made him their pantomime villain following his bar-room attack on Joe Root.

“It will be interesting to see how it does work,” Gower said Tuesday. “He (Broad) might have a tough time to start with. Not everyone will be as crass as to just pick up on those words the other day and make life hard for him all the time. “He is a good player and a tough individual but the best thing for him to do would be to

take a leaf out of David Warner’s book and just play with it. “If you go down there and you are expecting to cop a bit, and whether or not Lehmann said what he said, they would cop it anyway because it is the nature of the beast. “But if you can run with it and smile with it to win people over and perform well it would sort out any situation.” Gower, one of the most stylish batsmen of his generation, was speaking from experience, having scored five of his 18 Test hundreds in Australia. “I did well down there and that is the key,” he said. “If you do well they will respect you. I loved playing in Australia because they are good crowds,” the 56-year-old lefthander recalled. “The initial thing is that Australian crowds want Australia to win as English crowds want England to win and there are always the elements within those respective crowds that may take it too far. “But the great bulk of the cricket-loving public in both countries appreciate skill,” Gower insisted. “When you go down to Australia they don’t want you to win but if you perform well and do it with a certain style they will understand that and appreciate that.” AFP

A LEADER IN THE MAKING?

KP steps into role model shoes Kevin Pietersen is now the one star name left in the squad for the ongoing one-day series against Australia, with England resting many regular players. JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse BIRMINGHAM: Kevin Pietersen is setting a “great example” to the novice players in England’s one-day squad, according to limited-overs coach Ashley Giles. Just over a year ago, world-class batsman Pietersen was briefly exiled from the national side after being accused of sending derogatory text messages regarding then England captain Andrew Strauss to South Africa players. But following Strauss’s retirement, former skipper Pietersen has been “reintegrated” into the England set-up. He is now the one star name

Giles added Pietersen, who averages nearly 50 in Tests and 42 in ODIs, enjoyed the responsibility of being a senior figure in an inexperienced squad. left in the squad for the ongoing one-day series against Australia, with England resting regular captain Alastair Cook, batsman Ian Bell and bowlers James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann ahead of their Ashes defence ‘Down Under’ starting in November. Former England spinner

Giles knows Pietersen well, having been alongside him for much of the shotmaker’s maiden Test hundred, a superb 158 against Australia at The Oval that secured a draw which saw the Ashes regained in 2005. “I’ve got a decent relationship with Kev, and he’s one of the best players in the world,” said Giles at Edgbaston. Giles added Pietersen, who averages nearly 50 in Tests and 42 in ODIs, enjoyed the responsibility of being a senior figure in a largely inexperienced squad, having been excused duty from both the shared Twenty20 series with Australia and England’s six-wicket ODI win away to Ireland in Malahide.

Zimbabwe slump after solid start

HARARE: Hamilton Masakadza and Brendan Taylor shared a century partnership before Zimbabwe suffered a collapse on the first day of the second Test against Pakistan at Harare Sports Club on Tuesday. Zimbabwe were 237 for eight at the close of play. Masakadza (75) and Taylor (51) put on 110 for the third wicket but the rest of the batting crumbled on a pitch which had cracks that caused several deliveries to keep low. Masakadza’s dismissal, caught at slip off a Saeed Ajmal ‘doosra’, was the first of six wickets that fell for 94 runs before the close of play. Masakadza and Taylor came together after Zimbabwe lost their first

Masakadza, who captained the team in the first Test when Taylor withdrew because of the birth of his first child, batted solidly as he reached a halfcentury off 98 balls. two wickets for 31 runs. Tina Mawoyo was caught behind off Junaid Khan without scoring off the second ball of the match after Taylor won the toss and decided to bat. Vusi Sibanda battled to 14 off 44 balls before dragging an attempted pull against Rahat Ali onto his stumps. Masakadza, who captained the team in the first Test when Taylor withdrew because of the birth of his first child, batted solidly as he reached a half-century off 98 balls, taking advantage of any loose deliveries to hit eight fours and a six. Taylor, by contrast, looked out of touch early in his innings and was given a torrid time by left-arm pace bowler Junaid. He scored only seven runs as the partnership became worth 50 but he played with more fluency to contribute 32 of the next 50. He faced 128 balls and hit six fours. Junaid was the pick of the Pakistan bowlers and was unlucky not to have a better return than his three for 55. AFP

FORMULA 1

Massa out, Kimi in at Ferrari Raikkonen won the world title with Ferrari in 2007, the first of three years he spent partnering Massa at the Italian team.

ROME: Felipe Massa announced via Twitter that he will no longer be driving for Ferrari next year. The BBC later claimed Kimi Raikkonen would be replacing him and returning to the team he left in 2009. Raikkonen won the world title with Ferrari in 2007, the first of three years he spent partnering Massa at the Italian team. “From 2014 i will no longer be driving for Ferrari,” said Brazilian Massa on his official @Felipe1Massa account. “I would like to thank the team for all the victories and incredible moments experienced together.

“Thank you also to my wife and all of my family, to my fans and all my Sponsors. From each one of you I have always received a great support! Right now I want to push as hard as possible with Ferrari for the remaining 7 races.” Talk in the paddock has been raging for several weeks about who will be Ferrari’s second driver next year alongside two-time former world champion with Renault, Fernando Alonso. The BBC claimed a deal was agreed Monday that will see Raikkonen return to the team where he won his only world title. H i s

success in 2007 was the last time Ferrari won a world title, after which British duo Jenson Button, in a Brawn, and Lewis Hamilton, in a McLaren, claimed the championship before Red Bull’s Sebatian Vettel began his three-year domination. Raikkonen left F1 in 2009, moving to the World Rally Championship, and was replaced at the Italian team by Alonso. The flying Finn won nine Grand Prix with Ferrari, having also won nine during a five-year spell at McLaren, where he twice finished runner-up, in 2003 behind Michael Schumacher and then in 2005 to Alonso.

After a stint in NASCAR he returned to F1 in 2012 with Lotus, where he has won two Grand Prix. Massa says he wants to remain in F1 but has yet to find a drive for 2014. “For next year, I want to find a team that can give me a competitive car to win many more races and challenge for the Championship which remains my greatest objective!” he said. Massa has spent eight years with Ferrari since joining from Sauber in 2006. In 2008 he came within a couple of bends of winning the world title, only for Lewis Hamilton to snatch it by overtaking Timo Glock two corners from the end of the

RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP

Springboks brace for NZ

After three rounds of the fournation southern hemisphere championship, the Springboks and All Blacks are the only unbeaten sides. AUCKLAND: A confident South Africa named an unchanged match 23 to face the All Blacks in the battle for supremacy in the Rugby Championship at Eden Park on Saturday. After three rounds of the four-nation southern hemisphere championship, the Springboks and All Blacks are the only unbeaten sides. South Africa have beaten Argentina twice as well as Australia while the All Blacks have beaten Australia twice and Argentina. “Following the performance last weekend against Australia,

it made sense not to make any changes,” coach Heyneke Meyer said Wednesday, confirming the same starting lineup and bench that thrashed the Wallabies 38-12. Under Meyer, the Springboks have developed a winning culture and face the All Blacks having won their past nine Tests, including the fourtries-to-nil trouncing of the Wallabies. But Meyer said that counts for little when confronted with the tough task of securing their first away victory over the All Blacks since 2009. “We had a good win last

weekend, but that is in the past now,” he said. “Playing the All Blacks in New Zealand is the ultimate challenge in rugby and one we’re very excited about facing. “We’re only halfway through the Rugby Championship with three very

tough games ahead but this weekend we’re facing the best team in the world and it will not be easy.” Auckland’s Eden Park has been a hoodoo venue for the Springboks, who last won there in 1937 and have since lost five Tests and drawn one.

Brazilian Grand Prix. It was Massa’s best season in a Ferrari and the only time he challenged for the title, although he finished third in 2006 and fourth in 2007. His 2009 season ended in July’s Hungarian Grand Prix when he suffered a horrific injury in a crash in qualifying after being hit on the head by a suspension spring that had fallen from compatriot Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn. Massa suffered a head injury that was initially thought to be life-threatening but he recovered and was driving for Ferrari again in 2010. He has won 11 races in his Ferrari career, the last coming in 2008.

CJ INVITATIONAL

Choi looks to youth to prevail

SINGAPORE: South Korea’s KJ Choi said he hopes a younger player will finally step up and win his signature event after he claimed both of the first two editions. The 43-year-old star won the inaugural CJ Invitational Hosted by KJ Choi in 2011, and successfully defended his title last year, meaning he is on track for a hattrick next month in Seoul. But the burly ex-powerlifter, nicknamed “The Tank”, said he would be happy for one of Asia’s up-and-coming players to take his title at the October 10-13 event. “Winning my tournament for the third straight year would be great but I would love to see one of the younger guys pull it off this year,” he said, in comments released by the Asian Tour. “I’m sure it will be another great year with a great finish.”

Italy, Netherlands seal spots

The only World Cup finals Italy have missed remain the 1958 finals in Sweden, and Cesare Prandelli's side knew that a win against the Czech Republic in Turin would confirm their participation in a 14th consecutive finals.

ANDY SCOTT Agence France-Presse PARIS: Italy and the Netherlands became the first European nations to clinch qualification for the 2014 World Cup finals with victories on a busy night of action on Tuesday. Another of the continent's most famous names, Germany, are also now on the brink of qualification, as are Switzerland, while Russia and England ensured that their destinies remain in their own hands. The only World Cup finals Italy have missed remain the 1958 finals in Sweden, and Cesare Prandelli's side knew that a win against the Czech Republic in Turin would confirm their participation in a 14th consecutive finals. However, they had to overcome a scare in the Juventus Stadium before sealing first place in Group B with two games to spare.

Robin van Persie had saved the Dutch on Friday with an injurytime penalty and he scored twice early in the second half to see off Andorra.

The Netherlands, beaten finalists in South Africa in 2010 as well as the last time the World Cup was staged in South America, in Argentina in 1978, have struggled in this month's qualifying double header.

Germany seek home route to WC 2014 The Germans are just two points short of confirming their Brazil place and must beat the Republic of Ireland in Cologne on October 11 to be sure before their final qualifier in Stockholm against Sweden four days later. TĂ“RSHAVN: Coach Joachim Loew has said he is eager to see Germany confirm their 2014 World Cup place at home next month following Tuesday's 3-0 win over a 10man Faroe Islands. The Germans are just two points short of confirming their Brazil place and must beat Ireland in Cologne on October 11 to be sure before their final qualifier in Stockholm against Sweden four days later. Goals by Arsenal's Per Mertesacker, a Mesut Ozil penalty and Bayern Munich's Thomas Mueller gave Loew's side three more points in the remote north-west Atlantic

archipelago to keep Germany five points clear in Group C. "We can now make our World Cup qualification sure at home, which is nice," said Loew, who also saw his side beat Austria 3-0 in Munich last Friday. "It was compulsory to get the three points here, which we did, but you could see that the Faroe Islands can defend very well. "It was not easy to get through their defence and we need to improve our final passes. Overall, we were more stable in both games in terms of our defence, and we played well against one of the so-called small countries."

But a scrambled 2-2 draw in Estonia coupled with a 2-0 win in Andorra on Tuesday proved enough for them to win Group D with two matches to spare. Manchester United striker Robin van Persie had saved the

Dutch in Tallinn on Friday with an injury-time penalty and he scored twice four minutes apart early in the second half to see off Andorra. Switzerland can wrap up qualification from Group E next

month after a 2-0 victory in Norway, achieved thanks to a Fabian Schar brace, left Ottmar Hitzfeld's side five points clear of Iceland with two games remaining. And France moved back level on points with Spain at the top of Group I, albeit having played a game more, after coming from behind twice to win 4-2 in Belarus. Elsewhere, Fabio Capello's Russia are back on top of Group F, a point ahead of Portugal, after downing Israel 3-1, while Bosnia-Herzegovina and Greece are still locked level on points atop Group G.

Roy defends England The result sent England a point clear at the top of Group H with two games remaining, but they were wasteful in possession and looked short of ideas. TOM WILLIAMS Agence France-Presse KIEV: England manager Roy Hodgson defended his side against criticism from former national team captain Gary Lineker after their lacklustre 00 draw against Ukraine in World Cup qualifying. Lineker, who is now a television presenter, criticised Hodgson's team via Twitter on several occasions during

Tuesday's game. The 52-year-old former striker, who is his country's second all-time leading scorer, branded England's display "awful" and said Hodgson's players "pass it like they've never been introduced to each other". He also joked: "We're seeing a lot of one-touch football. England have a touch. Ukraine have a touch.

England have a touch..." Hodgson's side have only beaten Moldova and minnows San Marino in the qualifying campaign so far, but the England coach said Lineker's comments were unjustified. Hodgson was missing a number of important players., with Danny Welbeck suspended and Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge, Andy Carroll, AlexOxlade Chamberlain injured.
