Cops pick up a guy for chain-snatching. He spills the beans about two murders and his role. Mohd SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The murder of two women to cover up deceit and debauch would benumb any, adding to the macabre crime is a complex plot that a good crime thriller would have. The arrest of the three including a woman on charges of murder was fortuitous. One of them, G Satish was picked up for chain snatching, but police interrogation led to the unveiling of two heinous crimes in which he played a part. The story begins in early 2009 when one Raju, a dog dealer, and Lavanya got married. He is from Kareem Nagar and she from Malkajgiri. After marriage they shifted to Pampuguda in Malkajgiri. They had brought in Srividya, a young cousin of Lavanya, to live with them and work. After a while, Raju and Srividya developed intimate relations. By the time Lavanya suspected of foul play, it was too late, as they two could not part.
The husband and wife were given Biryani laced with poison that led to the two falling unconscious. Sri Vani was taken away and murdered, and her body was burnt to avoid identification. AROUND THE

When Lavanya objected, the duo ran away. She lodged a complaint of kidnap against her husband. The two were traced and he was sent to jail.

Con kings rule the roost POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: After the recent incident of two medical aspirants being cheated by conmen from Delhi, here comes another incident where cheats deceived a father and son over a crore rupees for getting the son a medical seat in UP. It was a gang of three that took the duo for a ride this time, police say. The gang belongs to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and they gave advertisements in Telugu dailies about medical seats available in various states. Many gullible fell for it but two paid huge sums and lost the money. The gang has taken `45 lakh from Dr P Radhakrishna Murthy,a resident of Dilsukhnagar, on the promise of getting his son a medical seat

Cheats deceive a father and son over a crore rupees for getting the son a medical seat in UP. in a medical college in Muzzafarpur in UP. The gang comes in different aliases and therefore unable to pinpoint the identity. In this instance they called themselves Venugopal, Srinivas and Ramu. The gang after sweet-talk invited the father and son to a posh hotel in Bowenpally and assured the two the seat would be booked. They took `45 lakh in advance. Later when the seat was ‘booked’ another big sum
was paid, it is alleged in complaint with the police.
MODUS OPERANDI
It was ingenious. Two men would act as important people in the medical college they named. They would check in a posh hotel and when the would-be victims appear, invite another man introducing him as the chairman of the medical selection committee. After transferring cash for bribe, the victim will get a ‘call from the medical college’ informing him that booking is done and would give a date to join the college. Still not able to fathom the deception, the victim would reach the college where they would get the shock of their lives when the management tells them no admission is done and nobody from the college called.
a crime syndicate and vowed to work together when they come out. After the jail term Mallesh and Satish used to visit Raju’s home. Meanwhile, Satish and Lavanya developed sexual relationship, it is alleged. Lavanya wanted revenge on Srividya and she plotted it with Satish. When Raju was away the duo took Srividya in car to a desolate place in Pampaguda and stragled her to death. They made up a story of the girl
developing stomach ache and dying. The death of Srividya was shocking for her sister Srivani. She and her husband Anil lodged a police complaint suspecting foul play involving Lavanya and Raju. This enraged Lavanya, and in October 2010, Lavanya, Satish and Mallesh allegedly invited Anil and Sri Vani to talk about the murder case and come to an understanding. The husband and wife were given biryani laced with poison that led to the two falling unconscious. Sri Vani was taken away and murdered and burnt her body to avoid identification. No clue to the murder was found. Recently, the Malkajgiri police picked up Satish and Mallesh for chain-snatching. Additional Inspector Ashok Kumar said casual interrogation on the snatching cases led to an abrupt revelation that the two are involved in murder cases. More probe led to the unveiling of the lecherous games the three men and a woman played. They have been arrested.

Dragons on road to be tamed ALEENA ALICE aleena.t@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The traffic department’s decision to start slapping heavy fines on motorists violating traffic rules is undoubtedly a move to bring some order to City roads. The question is whether the rule applies for one of the biggest violators of traffic rules — APSRTC. Drivers of SRTC have outnumbered the much-maligned auto drivers in terms of traffic violations. While rules are made for everyone, the RTC bus drivers don’t seem to care. Nearly 98 per cent of the 11,000-odd challans issued against the transport department are for jumping the signals. So far, the APSRTC owes the traffic department a penalty of nearly `30 lakh. Even when the fine of violating traffic rules was limited to `100-`200, the transport body was unable to pay up the penalty. Despite regular reminders being sent, the transport body is ignoring them and continues to violate the traffic norms. “Now the fine for signal jumping is `1,000, and if this careless atti-
tude of the bus drivers continues, the transport department will owe us crores of rupees in penalty, ” said a traffic official. The claims of transport authorities that they are conducting regular counselling sessions for drivers and sensitising them on traffic rules are questionable as all the buses from the various bus depots in the City have multiple challans levied on them. Postnoon tracked down a few among the thousands of buses and found that these buses
We don't understand if the RTC bus drivers are colour blind as they cannot see the red light. Transport authorities should start taking serious action against them. Senior police official Traffic department
have more than five challans each, most of them for signal jumping. For example, bus bearing registration number AP10Z6933 from the Dilsukhnagar bus depot has nine challans for signal jumping, while bus AP28Z0850 has seven challans pending since this January. “We don’t understand if the RTC bus drivers are colour blind as they cannot see the red light. Initially, the transport department used to pay the fine and deduct the money from the driver’s salary, but since 2011, they have stopped paying,” said a senior police official. Of the 24 bus depots in the City, Midhani bus depot tops the chart of traffic violations, with 989 challans being issued to the drivers. The penalty due is `2,08,715. The next is Hayathnagar bus depot with 1,043 challans issued and `2,06,805 penalty followed by Dilsukhnagar with 876 challans and a penalty of `1,77,360. Drivers from Tandoor bus depot seem to be very law abiding as they have only nine challans issued against them and a penalty of `1,615.
Boorish attitude of the RTC drivers, who care two hoots for traffic rules and signals, will be a special target from today when the new minimum penalty of `1,000 for traffic violations comes into force. There is general resentment against RTC drivers’ behaviour. AROUND THE
CITY
A significant fact is that nearly 7,000 challans are issued to buses which do not have any depot specifications. Though the police have the registration number they do not know the depot they belong to. For these, the penalty is more than `11 lakh. Despite the RTC violating traffic norms and not paying up, the police department has not taken serious action. However, when two-, three- or fourwheelers violate traffic norms, they are harassed. This indifferent attitude is objectionable, say commuters. “It is good idea to levy heavy fines so that at least this way the there will be traffic regulations. But our traffic commissioner should understand that rule for one is rule for all,” said C Ramakrishna a motorist. While traffic commissioner Amit Garg promises to make sure a special drive will be conducted against RTC buses, the transport authorities state that they will start deducting the fine amount from the drivers’ salary.

T for Naidu, S for his son! T-State has put him in a cleft stick, but he is planning to turn it into his advantage.
Md INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The biggest political challenge before TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu is which constituency to groom. The interesting question being bandied about in the Desham camp these days is that Naidu, now a Hyderabadi, might make Telangana his State and aim at its chief minister gaddi at the 2014 polls. His own native constituency in Rayalaseema and Seemandhra may be handed over to his son Lokesh, who has been angling for a political career for some time now. This would put two youths to test: Jagan and Lokesh. The party has strong roots in all the three regions and since the party has opted for the creation of Telangana, Naidu will have a rightful claim on the new State, argue his supporters.
The fact that Naidu has been a Hyderabadi for the last three decades and a voter of the City who never missed the opportunity to cast his vote, are coming handy tools for the former CM to stake his claim in the Telangana State. Most of the party leaders are supporting this idea for obvious reasons. Ano-
ther factor that makes it plausible is that the party has weakened in Seemandhra region due to the Jagan factor and the need of strong and young leadership to strengthen the party is forcing leaders to weigh this option. “Our party has indeed become weaker in Andhra and Rayalaseema regions due to the
YSR Congress. We never won a single Assembly by-election held since 2009 General Elections. We strongly feel that the same results will be repeated in the next General Elections. On the other hand, we are still a strong force in Telangana region. If our president opts for Telangana and encourages his son in Seemandhra, we will definitely form government in both the states,” a senior TDP leader told Postnoon on the condition of anonymity. The leader recalled that Naidu was responsible for the comprehensive development of Hyderabad. “The City witnessed development because of Chandrababu Naidu. He has every right to claim the throne of Telangana after the bifurcation,” he said. A group of leaders from Telangana reportedly requested Naidu to lead the party in T after the bifurcation. Another factor that makes Lokesh’s role in the two regions plausible is that the party has weakened in Seemandhra region due to the Jagan factor. leader said that promotion of Lokesh in Andhra and Rayalaseema regions would give a tough fight to YS Jagan and help the party garner huge number of seats. “Lokesh is a youth leader and Naidu’s heir apparent. People would see him a s a ray of hope and a strong alternative to corrupt YS Jagan,” he said.

avabharath Yuvabheri, held at the stadium, under perfect playing conditions, drew crowds like an India versus Pakistan cricket match does. With the stadium filling up much before the action, the spill over had to be accommodated in the adjacent Nizam College where a giant LED screen projected the proceedings. Songs praising Modi and ticking patriotism kept the audience entertained in their wait for the man they had come to see and hear. ‘Vande maataram’ rendered by AR Rahman was the favourite. It didn’t matter that ‘All the best’ was picturised on Sanjay Dutt – who is serving term – on
the silver screen. For, it was on this song that Modi made his entry. His supporters were wishing him luck in the 2014 elections through this song and more blatantly with the slogan, “Bharat ke pradhan mantra kaun hain?” which was echoed by more supporters with, “Narendra Modi”! While he strode majestically across the dais smiling and waving, the crowd burst into a crescendo of cheering, stamping the man’s rising popularity. Permission itself of his visit had been granted after many denials, making the occasion and the success all the more sweet. The warring teams, it transpired, were the BJP and the Congress, but the sole player was Modi: the periodic sound of the conch made it sound like a religious war. While he represented the BJP in totality, players of the Congress party were not missed either, with Modi ripping apart all of them – from Sonia Gandhi to Digvijay Singh
– much to the crowd’s delight. His earnestness at being a national figure came through in the first few lines that he spoke – in Telugu, which were lapped up joyfully by the audience. Even when he switched to Hindi, he stayed connected to the largely Hindi-understanding crowd of Hyderabad. Deftly handling the delicate Telangana topic, Modi asserted the BJP promise of its statehood within 100 days of coming to power, to a mixed response of a non-committal crowd. He did not ruffle either supporters’ feathers, stressing the importance of both Seemandhra and Telangana in staying united towards a common goal – the ouster of Congress from the region and the Centre. In fact, he pulled off a smart political move by reminding the people of the State that it was NTR who first realised the dream of a non-Congress government in the State. The BJP and TDP could together defeat the Congress in the State, he

seemed to hint. The substantial number of women that turned up, if anything, indicated changing times, and the way the numbers scale may tilt. A contribution of `5 collected at the gate per person, which came up to `10 lakh was donated towards the Uttarakhand relief fund.
SECURITY TAKES BACKSEAT
The security arrangements in the stadium left a lot to be desired. The sheer volume of people the handful of policemen had to contend with did not make things easy for them, but that cannot be an excuse when manning an event as big and important as this. At least three enthusiastic women from Rahimnagar, Tara Shivaji Rao, Saraswati and Laxmi Bai, were in possession of passes duly signed by the issuing authority, but without their
names written on them. They had their names written by a Samaritan who did not deem it necessary to check their identities. A man making his way through the gate meant for media persons was frisked, coffee sachets he was carrying in his pocket confiscated, he was then let in. The cop, in the fracas let him go through though the man did not have a pass. It’s good that he turned out to be just an eager passerby who took his chance at a peek-in.

He recalled how NDA government under Atal Bihari Vajpayee created three new states of Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Chattisgarh without any hostilities in any region. “ In each case, both the mother state and the new-born celebrated distributing sweets. Though Andhra Pradesh had contributed the highest number of MPs for Congress to come to power at the Centre, Congress ended up creating only hostile atmosphere between the two regions of the state, he said. Modi’s well-attended meeting was urged to live in peace after division. “You are brothers, why quarrel?,”he asked. This was Mod’s first campaign rally since his anointment as BJP's poll campaign committee chief. Modi wondered why a new capital city has not been built for Seemandhra since 2004 when Congress came to power. He said BJP favoured development and growth of cities in Seemandhra even better than Hyderabad.

Festivities over, City stinks
But Narendra Modi saves the situation, it seems. His visit has come as a boon since the GHMC is compelled to clean up core areas in the City for safety and security reasons. AROUND THE

ALEENA ALICE aleena.t@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The two back-to-back festivals along with rains have pushed up the solid wastes in the City leading to outbreak of dengue and viral fever in many parts, medical circles point out. It is calculated that Bonalu and Eid have added another 4,800 tonnes of waste to the already-burdened GHMC sanitation department. With the GHMC not stipulating any penal provisions for scattering wastes in public spaces, it has been callous dumping anywhere and everywhere. The wastes of food, especially meat, generate health hazards, flies and mosquitoes and also help proliferation
of street dogs. Dinner parties and hotels are adding to most of the waste dumps while the GHMC looks the other way for obvious reason — corruption. However, thanks to the visit of the BJP leader Narendra Modi, the GHMC is making sure that the piled-up garbage is lifted from the core areas and main roads. However, the garbage dumps in the interior residential areas have been left untouched since Friday. The sanitation workers and garbage contractors seem to be having a tough time in clearing this. The shortage of transport vehicles and workers has put the civic body in a fix and the misery of having to bear with the stench will continue for another three days. The entire City’s waste is transported from the transfer stations in Lower Tankbund, Yousufguda and Imblibun to the landfills in the outskirts. The civic body has been finding it difficult to find drivers for these transport vehicles. Though a majority of these drivers are outsourced, since most of them take leave during festivals, transporting garbage to the landfills has become a task for the GHMC. Residents of areas, mainly from the Old
City, have been finding it difficult to deal with the stench of the piled-up garbage and fear an outbreak of disease if the garbage is not cleared immediately. “There has been a lot of meat waste generated from the two festivals. The garbage is only being piled up, and no workers have come to clear it. It has become difficult to even open our windows because of the stench and the houseflies. Because of the garbage, the street dog menace has increased and it’s difficult to even walk on the roads,” said Madhusudhan, a resident of Shalibanda. The GHMC, on the other hand, states that they have hired extra work force to clear the piled-up garbage. “We have pressed all the 750 transport vehicles for additional afternoon trips along with the morning shifts to the dumpyard in order to clear the extra garbage that has been generated in the past few days,” said additional commissioner for health and sanitation L Vandan Kumar. Adding to the woes of the GHMC workers is that the rag pickers seem to have taken a festive break, thus adding to the burden on the civic body.

And rightly so since youngsters of today do not shy away from putting their career and education first. They do not think twice before moving out of their comfort zones they share with their parents and start a new life from scratch in a different city. One of them is Anchit Thomas, who decided to move to Pune after turning down a good offer from a company in Hyderabad. “I wanted to live an independent life. I have always dreamt of moving out of the city. So when I got the offer from a company in Hyderabad I didn’t think twice before turning it down. My life with my parents in the City would have been easy and I would have saved much more than I am doing right now in Pune. But this life is teaching me a lot,” Anchit Thomas says. Rudd said that if re-elected on September 7, Labor would introduce a bill within 100 days, becoming the first Australian leader to promise to support marriage equality. “Frankly, in 2013, I think the time has come to put this acrimonious debate behind us,” the leader, who has previously been against gay marriage said. Rudd said it was a reform millions of Australians had waited a long time to see become law. AFP

Morsi backers rally, calls for talks still on
Supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi rallied on Sunday to demand his reinstatement, even as officials said a ‘gradual’ break-up of their protest camps was imminent. SARAH BENHAIDA Agence France-Presse CAIRO: Al-Azhar, Sunni Islam’s highest seat of learning, meanwhile, announced a lastditch effort to resolve the tense political standoff and called for reconciliation talks between the rival sides. Before the police finally moves in, Morsi loyalists are to be given fresh warnings to evacuate the two protest camps erected in Cairo since the army ousted the Islamist leader on July 3, security officials told AFP. They did not give a date for the launch of operations but the interim government has repeatedly warned the camps will be dismantled after the Muslim holidays of Eid al-Fitr which came to a close on Sunday. Defiant Morsi loyalists called for new massive protests on Tuesday after again rallying to demand his reinstatement and condemn the army. “Sisi is a traitor, Sisi is a killer,” shouted protesters who took part in a march of hundreds of women in central Cairo, referring to army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi who was behind Morsi’s overthrow.

It’s back to basics in rural France Battered dogs get more empathy than adult humans: Survey

Tapping into the modern day nostalgia for a simpler existence, the Kirkwoods’ holiday cabins in France are an antidote to the ‘24/7’ lifestyle of many visitors. HELEN ROWE Agence France-Presse PARIS: At a remote spot deep in the French countryside, Britons Bob and Diane Kirkwood have created an eco-friendly refuge that is like taking a step back in time. Oil lamps and candles supply the lighting and if you want the Internet you’ll have to make the trek into the nearest town. Tourists have long flocked to France in search of the rural dream. But the Kirkwoods have taken things one step further, offering holidaymakers the chance to live without mains electricity, flush toilets, mobile phone or Internet access. “It all happened by accident really...there’s no work around here so you have to find something to do,” Bob Kirkwood said by telephone from his home near the small town of Piegut. The couple fell in love with the natural beauty of the area and its slower pace of life during a short visit there in 2000. “It’s all just forests really and very backward farming. I mean, it’s not unusual to see people ploughing with horses,” he said. Astonished by the then rock-

When a nearby piece of land with a lake came on the market, they bought it and converted an old shack into a bolt-hole for themselves. But because of the isolated nature of the spot, Bob found he had to turn himself into an expert on offgrid living. “We didn’t go into this because of green issues,” says Bob, 50, a carpenter by trade. “It was just that you can’t run electricity to this class of building because they’re so remote. So we had no alternative
really other than to find ways of generating a bit of power and it all led from there.” Bob began by buying a car battery and “seeing what could be done with it”. Now, the Kirkwoods’ cabins boast compost toilets, wood-burning stoves for heating and hot water and solar powered lamps for lighting, although Bob and Diane prefer candles or oil lamps. The popularity of the cabins took the couple by surprise. After they finished the first one, they set up a website with a view to occasionally letting it. Every year more and more people come, said Bob. Far from putting people off, the lack of facilities and creature comforts are their main attraction. Now, over a decade since they settled permanently, the simpler life remains as much as a draw as it ever was for the Kirkwoods. Visitors, however, can struggle with the idea of disconnecting totally from the outside world, in particular giving up their mobile phone. “It seems people can’t let that go. I wish they could and leave the things at home but they can’t,” Bob added.
WASHINGTON: People have more empathy for battered puppies and full grown dogs than they do for adult humans, a US survey has found. Jack Levin and Arnold Arluke, sociology professors at the Northeastern University, surveyed 240 men and women, most of them white and between the ages of 18 and 25, at a large northeastern university in the US. Participants randomly received AROUND THE one of four fictionWORLD al news articles about the beating of a one-year-old child, an adult in his 30s, a puppy, or a six-year-old dog, reports Xinhua. The stories were identical except for the victim’s identify. After reading their story, respondents were asked to rate their feelings of empathy towards the victim. Participants had higher levels of empathy for abused children, puppies and dogs than they did for the abused adults, the researchers said. But the difference in empathy for children versus puppies was statistically non-significant. “Contrary to popular thinking, we are not necessarily more disturbed by animal rather than human suffering,” Levin said in a statement. “We were surprised by the interaction of age and species. Age seems to trump species, when it comes to eliciting empathy. “In addition, it appears that adult humans are viewed as capable of protecting themselves while full grown dogs are just seen as larger puppies,” said Levin. THE REINVENTION OF AEROFLOT
FROM FLYING COFFINS TO LOW-BUDGET RELIABILITY Russia’s flag carrier Aeroflot is shrugging off its disaster-plagued reputation and plans to create a Russian equivalent to EasyJet or Ryanair, whose success transformed travelling habits and the aviation industry in Europe.
GERMAIN MOYON Agence France-Presse MOSCOW: A Russian budget airline? The thought may fill some travellers with dread but Russia’s flag carrier Aeroflot is now taking serious steps to launch the country’s first sustainable low-cost airline. Aeroflot has made huge strides in recent years to lay to rest its image as a disasterplagued Soviet carrier, becoming a member of the Sky Team alliance and winning international awards for its service. And now it wants to take another step by creating a Russian equivalent to EasyJet or Ryanair, whose success transformed travelling habits and the aviation industry in Europe. Aeroflot announced the plan for a budget subsidiary after a board meeting in July. But crucially, setting up the budget airline is still dependent on changes to Russia’s aviation regulations which are stricter than in Europe. The airline, which still controls 40 per cent of the Russian aviation market, is hoping from 2014 to launch its first budget routes from Moscow to Saint Petersburg and to cities in the south of Russia. According to the daily newspaper Vedomosti, the new Aeroflot subsidiary, whose name has yet to be unveiled, plans to eventually serve international destinations including Kiev, Yerevan, Istanbul and Barcelona with a fleet that will comprise 40 planes starting with Boeing 737s. Analysts point to the fact that many Russians are still making long journeys across the vast country by train and may be easily tempted to fly if the prices are lower.
‘JUMPSTART THE PROCESS’
The budget Aeroflot would likely be based at Domodedovo in the south of Moscow as opposed the airline’s main hub at Sheremetyevo airport. Russia’s third biggest airline UTair is also planning to set up its own low cost carrier, pointing to a clear market demand. “People consider more and more that their time is precious and they are going to want less and less to spend two or three
A RUSSIAN RESURGENCE? n Aeroflot is the flag carrier and largest airline of the Russian Federation. n Aeroflot is one of the oldest airlines in the world, tracing its history back to 1923. During the Soviet era, Aeroflot was the Soviet national airline and the largest airline in the world. n For most of its history, Aeroflot’s fleet consisted entirely of planes built by Soviet manufacturers Antonov, Ilyushin, and Tupolev. days to get anywhere,” its chief executive Andrei Martirossov told Vedomosti. Russian companies are also keenly aware that low-cost European airlines are already establishing themselves on the Russian aviation market which is enjoying annual growth rates of 20 percent. EasyJet in March launched its first flights between Moscow and London while Hungary-based Wizz Air will follow in September with flights between AROUND THE

Budapest and Moscow. “Aeroflot’s move, in our view, is strategically sound given strong demand for cheap domestic flights, including from passengers who currently travel by train,” Sberbank Investment Research said in a note to clients. “It is better to jumpstart the process rather than wait for competitors to lead the way in this promising market segment,” it added, warning however of the “high risks for Aeroflot”. Aeroflot is seeking to count
on a tried-and-trusted method to set up its budget airline — reduce costs to a minimum, sell non-refundable tickets and only through the Internet, as well as charging for checked-in baggage and food. The problem is that currently Russia’s stringent aviation regulations outlaw aggressive costsaving practices. Russian law also forbids the hiring of foreign pilots, a major problem in a country whose aviation boom had led to a pilot shortage and consequent high salaries.
‘THE LAW MUST CHANGE’
“As long as the law does not change, absolutely nothing is going to fly. We are not going to take the risk,” Aeroflot’s chief executive Vitaly Saveliev told state television. “Aeroflot is not going to invest 100 million dollars in a project which is not going to make us money.” Analysts at VTB Capital said that given past experience, it seemed that Aeroflot still had an uphill struggle to get the airline of the ground. “The low-cost airline model does not currently work in Russia.”

MAHINDRA GOES TO GHANA

Car industries in the US and Europe are showing clear signs of getting back on track after severe setbacks in the financial and debt crises. Buoyed by sales of 3,500 SUVs and pick-ups in the last seven years, Indian automotive major Mahindra is to set up an assembly plant and service centre on a 9.5 acre plot in the Ghanaian capital along with its local partner. The decision was driven by the need to explore the vast investment potentials and service the needs of the vehicle market in the West African region, said Thomas Svanikier, executive chairman of Svani Motors, the vehicle’s sole distributor in Ghana. He said more than 3,500 Mahindra vehicles had been sold over the past seven years to state institutions, private organisations, industries, UN agencies and individuals in Ghana.

of the country’s apple market is captured by imported ones, mainly from China, US, New Zealand, Australia and Chile.
LAURE FILLON feedback@postnoon.com PARIS: The US auto market returned to pre-crisis levels in July and the slump in European sales seemed to ease. US car sales reached the best levels for seven years as American consumers are being encouraged by low interest rates and a boom in the shale oil and gas industry. A closely watched indicator, the sales adjusted annualised rate (SAAR), gave a reading of 15.67 million units, allowing the sector to return to the volumes it knew before the 2007 global financial crisis that crippled the sector. It’s a stunning recovery from a deep and painful downturn which pushed General Motors and Chrysler into bankruptcy in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis and which forced the American auto industry to
undergo massive restructuring. Both GM and Ford last month reported better-thanexpected results for the quarter while Chrysler inflated the earnings of its parent company Fiat. The Japanese — key players on the US car market — are also faring well. Boosted by a fall of the yen, the leading world automaker Toyota raised its annual forecast despite a fall in global sales. Nissan, on the other hand, confirmed its targets even though its number of registrations fell. Europe has also experienced a sunnier spell, even though the debt-burdened continent has been much slower to restructure its auto sector as governments pull the breaks in fear of higher unemployment if plants are shut down. Earlier this month, BMW said weak European markets and higher competition would continue to provide challenges
in the second half of the year. In July, registrations in Germany rose by 2.1 percent, while Spain experienced a 14.8 per cent rise, although this was with the help of government subsidies for the replacement of an old car with a new one. Such temporary schemes in other European countries to support the auto industry after the financial crisis were followed by a slump in sales. But overall, the latest numbers may mean that the drop in EU registrations is slowing down. In the first quarter the figure fell by 6.6 percent compared with a year earlier — but numbers to confirm a trend will not be available until September. An up-tick would do wonders for car makers such as France’s PSA Peugeot Citroen, which is still highly dependent on Europe and which has managed to cut its quarterly debt in
almost half. But other European players which focused more on the international market are still doing better, such as French firm Renault and in particular German auto manufacturers like Daimler, BMW and Volkswagen — all reporting solid second-quarter results. Aside from the US market, hope is mainly pinned on emerging markets and in particular China — the world’s biggest auto market now dominated by American, German and Japanese car makers. In the first half of the year, sales there surged by 12.3 per cent to 10.78 million. India has similarly experienced both highs and lows. At the end of June it had experienced eight months of declining registrations. Business advisory firm AlixPartners forecasts that 2.6 million cars will be sold in India in 2018, compared with 1.9 million in 2012-2013. AFP

US federal Judge Gladys Kessler describes it as a “painful, humiliating and degrading process.” But for staff at the controversial US military jail, the criticisms of feeding by tubes — force-feeding or enteral feeding depending on where you stand — are overblown. A six-month mass hunger strike by detainees at Guantanamo this year has forced prison authorities to repeatedly resort to the practice to prevent inmates starving to death. But while it has been decried by a legion of rights groups as inhumane, Guantanamo officials insist it is merely “uncomfortable.” In a tour arranged for reporters last week, journalists were given a glimpse of the protocols governing feeding by tube. Reporters were shown where hunger-strikers are restrained before a tube delivering essential nutrients is inserted into their body for “feeding.” “For enteral feeding, the first thing we do is offer the person a regular meal,” said a hospital medic given the alias “Leonato.” “They refuse that, we now offer a nutritional supplement to drink themselves. “They refuse that, then they’re taken by the guards to the enteral feed chair and restrained. We measure the correct length of the tube, they’re offered either a (anesthetic) gel or olive oil. The feed lasts 30-35 minutes.

s a teenager radicalised by China’s C u l t u r a l Revolution, Zhang H o n g b i n g denounced his mother to the authorities. Two months later a firing squad shot her dead. Now after more than 40 years of mounting guilt, Zhang has ruffled the silence that cloaks China’s decade of turmoil with a public confession. Such rare apologies have been welcomed as a potential gateway to the collective soulsearching that could bring healing — but is blocked by a ruling Communist Party whose critics say is unwilling to confront its own responsibility. “Back then everyone was swept up and you couldn’t escape even if you wanted to. Any kindness or beauty in me was thoroughly, irretrievably ‘formatted’,” Zhang told the Beijing News last week. “I hope that from my selfreflection other people can understand what the situation was like at that time.” The 1966-76 Cultural Revolution, unleashed by thenleader Mao Zedong to reassert power after the famines caused by his disastrous Great Leap Forward, inflicted myriad per-
sonal tragedies and threw society into chaos. ‘Red Guard’ youths abused their elders — officials, intellectuals, neighbours, relatives — dragging them into ‘struggle sessions’, ransacking their homes and driving some to suicide. Many targets were jailed or killed, and while no official figure has been issued, one Western historian estimated half a million people died in 1967 alone. Zhang reported his mother in 1970 for criticising Mao, and military officials came to their home, assaulted her and took her away. But as the political winds changed — a few years after the Cultural Revolution ended, a court in his native central Anhui province recanted his mother’s sentence — Zhang began to rethink as well. “I will never forgive myself,” he said. Only a handful of public confessions have appeared, mostly in recent years as the Revolution’s once-heady teenagers enter their 60s. Wen Qingfu from the central province of Hunan cited age as a spur for admitting in an essay in June that, following orders, he once led a mob to storm the home of a teacher whose son he often played with. “When people get old they look back and reflect,” he told a provincial newspaper. “If I didn’t apologise now we would both get too old.”
Wen acted in time to see his victim’s daughter reply in a public letter on behalf of her frail mother: “You can let go of your guilt.” Many Chinese have embraced these apologies, even though wide airing of past wrongs might invite a spate of legal action, said Ding Xueliang, a Cultural Revolution expert at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In a rare trial stemming from the era, a court in Zhejiang province in April sentenced a man in his 80s to 42 months in prison for a 1967 murder. Still, Ding said, “the positive consequences would go far beyond the negative ones... to collective soul-searching, to
build a more law-based society”. But China’s ruling party prohibits such discussion, which would inevitably broach the question of its own ugly role. Any trial or apology tends to skirt around this central issue, say academics. “Individual responsibility is one part of this,” said Xu Youyu, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. “Some things are basic, for example, you can’t hit people or humiliate or persecute them.” But the confessions “have not touched on the more important or fundamental issues,” he said, and if they did, “there might be a question of whether the discussion could continue”.
EDITORIAL BJP ace wins hearts not minds
A
positive approach is bound to be more fruitful than trying to capitalise on others’ mistakes. Two wrongs do not make one right. By belittling someone else’s work one only can entertain a fun-seeking audience. The serious voter is not going to get swayed by opposition-bashing. One can demonstrate mettle only by taking the healthy route of unifying the masses, and not necessarily by faux pas; why flog a dead horse? Has debonair Narendra Modi lost a golden opportunity of reaching out to the people of Hyderabad? Will the minorities ever look at the BJP as an option? Answers to these questions were obvious at the Lal Bahadur Stadium on Sunday evening, and are likely to eventually percolate through to those who couldn’t make it there.
READERS’ VIEWS
Physiologic analysts and political advisers within the BJP may have read the mood of the people of Andhra Pradesh wrongly this time. It is the charisma of Modi that drew people and not an anti-Congress wave, which was evident in the subdued crowd reaction to his predominantly Congress-bashing speech. The saffron spin masters would not have expected their mountain to give birth to a mouse. If the Gujarat CM was expected to be the knight in shining armour who would offer a beacon of hope, he turned out, to everyone’s disappointment, to be just another crowd entertainer. Come on BJP... you guys need to buck up, we have enough morons in the State for theatrics. We don’t need your poster boy seen jostling in the garbage bin with the rest.

Members of the club say they narrowed down on this name because they feel they are recycling their time doing something that each of them are passionate about. “Before the start of this group, we did nothing worthwhile with our free time. It is this idea that made us choose this unique name for our group,” Ishu, one of the mem-

HAPHAZARD USE OF VACCINES LED TO BIRD FLU IN NEPAL

As the vaccines were unverified, the virus grew so rapidly that it became difficult to control, said the doctor.

Ethics and HeLa cells
Henrietta Lacks’ descendents are paving the way yet again — this time helping to lay the groundwork for ethical use of genetic data obtained in the name of research. TOMASZ SZUL/VISUALS UNLIMITED, INC./GETTY IMAGES
MARIETTE LE ROUX Agence France-Presse PARIS: Sixty-two years ago, scientists harvested cancer cells from an African American tobacco farmer which were used for some of the biggest breakthroughs in medical science — without her knowledge or consent. The abnormally resilient cells were taken from Henrietta Lacks shortly before she died and used for decades without her family’s knowledge, spawning Nobelwinning discoveries and a multimillion-dollar industry that yielded the polio vaccine, cloning, in-vitro fertilisation and many medicines. It became the most widely used human cell line used by researchers and made Lacks a giant contributor to medical science, albeit unwittingly. Now, six decades after her death, Lacks’ descendents are paving the way yet again — this time helping to lay the groundwork for ethical use of genetic data obtained in the name of research. Authorities announced they had finally reached an agreement with Lacks’ family for the continued, though controlled, use of the cells’ genomic data, which was published on the same occasion. “It is truly fitting, given the priceless contributions that Henrietta Lacks has made to science and medicine, that her story is now catalysing enduring changes in policy,” Francis Collins, director of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), told journalists. “We should all count Henrietta Lacks and her family among the greatest philanthropists of our time if we consider how they have contributed to the advancement of science and human health.” Lacks, a mother of five, was 31 when she died of an aggressive cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in 1951. At the time, US regulations did not require doctors to obtain a patient’s consent to harvest cell specimens.
The cells taken from Lacks, dubbed HeLa for the first letters of her first and last names, caused great excitement in scientific circles: they were the firstever human cells to grow endlessly in the lab — all others harvested up to this point eventually died.
The resilient cells spawned Nobel-winning discoveries and an industry that yielded the polio vaccine and cloning. “HeLa cells... are considered one of the biggest medical miracles in the last century,” said a statement from the University of Washington in Seattle, which on Wednesday
published a genome sequence of the cells in the journal Nature under the terms of the new agreement.
“The cells allowed scientists to perform experiments without using a living human and led to major medical breakthroughs”, including a vaccine for certain types of cervical cancer and drugs for herpes, leukemia, influenza and Parkinson’s disease. Lacks’ identity was revealed in a scientific journal in 1971, followed by a television documentary in 1997 and the publication in 2010 of a book, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”, now being made into a film. Then in March this year, scientists from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Germany published a full genome of the cell line — including data that could divulge certain heritable traits of Lacks’ descendents. Such information, which may point to a propensity for diseases
like alcoholism, Alzheimer’s disease or bipolar disorder, could be used to deny people life insurance or disability coverage, and the data was removed from public fora within days after the family protested. The incident resulted in talks between the Lacks family and the NIH, which in turn yielded Wednesday’s deal in terms of which researchers must apply to the NIH to use the HeLa genomic data in a study, agree to terms defined by a panel that will include two Lacks family members, and contribute their findings to a database. “Today’s release of the human genome sequencing is a historic, game-changing event,” granddaughter and family spokeswoman Jeri Lacks Whye told a telephone conference. “In the past, the Lacks family has been left in the dark... For more than 60 years our family has been pulled into science without our consent and researchers had never stopped to talk to us... or to give us a voice in the conversation about HeLa cells, until now.” Whye said the decision had been a complicated one, seeking to balance the needs of science with protecting her family’s privacy. “We are proud of what HeLa cells have done for science,” she said, and welcomed a stipulation that will require researchers to recognise Henrietta Lacks and her cells’ contribution to science. The agreement covered only researchers funded by the NIH, and would not prevent others from “piecing together” large parts of the HeLa genome from data already in the public domain, or even sequencing it from scratch. “Such actions would not be right and would not be respectful of the Lacks family,” said NIH deputy director for science, outreach and policy, Kathy Hudson. Collins stressed the agreement was not precedent-setting, and was necessary only because the HeLa cells were in such widespread use and the Lacks family was by now so widely known.

The topless models have been a fixture on The Sun’s page three ever since 1970, when Rupert Murdoch bought the newspaper. The topless photos will now be replaced by glamorous photos of celebrities and models, said the paper. The reason for the sudden change, which is against the policy of the UK edition, was because Ireland is a more conservative and religious country, said the editor.

n the damp basement room of a Caribbean restaurant in London, Naima leads prayers for an audience of male and female worshippers. But Naima — she did not want to give her full name — had just begun the Al-Fatiha when a young woman got up and hurried out of the room. Leila Bakkioui, 25, clad in a headscarf, admitted she was reeling. “I went downstairs to pray and a sister led the prayer,” she explained to her friend Tana Rasekh, who was waiting in the restaurant.
Bakkioui, a young mathematics teacher, had stumbled onto a group of Muslims working towards a more “inclusive” Islam, where men and women pray in the same room, with women sometimes leading the prayers. Tamsila Tauqir helped to launch the Inclusive Mosque Initiative (IMI) in November last year after she became frustrated by what she saw in mosques in Britain and the wider Muslim world. She said the practices of Islam are still based on “cultural traditions of patriarchy” based on texts that were compiled “three hundred years after the death of the Prophet”.
“There is nothing in the Koran that says that women and men can’t pray together or that women can’t lead prayers,” said Tauqir. The group has pointedly not found a mosque willing to host their meetings. Tauqir admits she has received “dismissive” comments about the group, but insists they were not “threatening”". Hassan Wanini, a Kenyan man taking part in an IMI session for the first time, predicted that if the group continued to grow, “there will be a backlash”. “But the Prophet himself suffered a lot to be Muslim. We are just carrying on what he was doing,” he said. AFP

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

ctor Liam Hemsworth says Twitter “scares the hell” out of him. The Paranoia actor, who recently joined the microblogging site, admits he has no plans to share details of his personal life via the medium because he wants to maintain his privacy. “On Twitter, I don’t share anything personal. I try to keep as much of my personal life to myself, and I don’t feel the need to go out and show the world what’s happening in my life every second,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted Hemsworth as saying. “I think it’s a good chance to connect with fans in a different way and give fans an inside look on films that you do. But it’s very new to me and it scares the hell out of me,” added Hemsworth. The 23-year-old, who is engaged to pop star Miley Cyrus, recently said that he finds sex scenes “scary” and said filming bedroom scenes with actor Johnny Depp’s girlfriend Amber Heard for Paranoia was rather daunting because of all the crew members on set. “Intimate scenes are always pretty scary. Being intimate with someone in front of a lot of people, it’s hard to let go and be free in the scene,” he said. IANS

The 34-year-old, who divorced actor Tom Cruise, father of her seven-year-old daughter Suri, is rumoured to be in a relationship with Kirby. WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP
Bolt silences Gatlin’s guns Bolt clocked a season’s best 9.77 seconds in heavy rain at the Luzhniki Stadium, with American Justin Gatlin claiming silver in 9.85sec. LUKE PHILLIPS Agence France-Presse

MOSCOW: Jamaican sprint star Usain Bolt lifted track and field out of the doping doldrums as he reclaimed his world 100m title in emphatic style on Sunday. Bolt clocked a season’s best 9.77 seconds in heavy rain at the Luzhniki Stadium, with American Justin Gatlin claiming silver in 9.85sec and Nesta Carter, also of Jamaica, taking bronze in 9.95sec. Athletics’ credibility had again been called to account in recent weeks, notably after American sprint rival Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell tested positive for drugs. Once again it was Bolt, the powerfully-built 26-year-old world record holder in both the 100 and 200m, who came to the rescue, at least in the short term. The sole blot on the Jamaican’s copybook since winning treble gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics was a false
start two years ago in the Daegu worlds that saw now-injured teammate Yohan Blake take the blue riband title. “I am happy but I wanted to do better,” said Bolt. “My legs were sore after the semi-finals, I don’t know why, but the world record wasn’t on so I came out just to win. “Back in Jamaica, they do not expect less than that from me. They always expect me to dominate.” The race itself was “classic” Bolt in front of a Luzhniki Stadium that was far from being a sell-out in stormy weather.
Ivanov walks into Russian hearts MOSCOW: Aleksandr Ivanov gave hosts Russia their first gold of the world championships on Sunday and the country’s third successive title in the 20 kilometres walk. The 20-year-old timed 1hr 20min 58sec as he crossed the line to roars of delight from the crowd, ahead of China’s Olympic champion Chen Ding (1hr 21min 09sec) while Spaniard Miguel Lopez, fifth in the Olympics, took bronze (1hr 21min 21sec). Ivanov said that it signified a changing of the guard in Russian walking, and that although he had found parts of his first senior championships race tough the youngsters had replaced the veterans. “My main aim is Rio 2016,” he said. “The beginning was particularly tough but I kept telling myself keep going, you have to keep going.” Chen was delighted with the silver after a miserable time since his Olympic triumph that has been hampered by injuries and this was his first race back.

Eaton wins Decathlon crown
Perkovic wins discus gold
MOSCOW: Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba produced an effortless masterclass in middle-distance running to win a third world 10,000m title at the World Athletics Championships on Sunday. Dibaba clocked 30min 43.37sec, with Gladys Cherono of Kenya taking silver (30:45.17), and Ethiopia’s Belaynesh Oljira claiming bronze (30:46.98). Dibaba can rightly be lauded as queen of the 10km event, having also won two Olympic golds over the distance. The 27-year-old missed the Daegu worlds in 2011 because of injury but has never lost in her 10 outings over 25 laps of the track.
MOSCOW: Ashton Eaton of the United States added the world decathlon title to his Olympic crown in a dominant display at the World Athletics Championships on Sunday. Eaton, who won silver in Daegu two years ago, finished the gruelling two-day 10-discipline event with 8,809 points. Germany’s Michael Schrader took silver (8,670), with Damian Warner of Canada claiming bronze (8,512). “I felt good today,” said Eaton, described by Jamaican sprint king Usain Bolt after his Olympic win in London last year as the best athlete in the world.
MOSCOW: Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic won the women’s discus title at the World Athletics Championships on Sunday. The Olympic champion, who served a six-month doping ban in 2011, threw a best of 67.99 metres.
MONTREAL MASTERS
MOSCOW: America’s Olympic champion Brittney Reese maintained her grip on the women’s long jump on Sunday when she won her third successive world outdoor title. She posted a best jump of 7.01 metres to take gold, while Nigerian Blessing Okagbare won silver and Serbia’s Ivana Spanovic the bronze.

Nadal crushes Raonic for title
MONTREAL: Fourth seed Rafael Nadal needed just 68 minutes to deliver a body blow to Canada’s biggest tennis week, routing Milos Raonic 6-2, 6-2 to capture the ATP Montreal Masters on Sunday. The Spaniard then made it clear that he is planning to carry on next week to the final major tune-up prior to the US Open, the combined ATP-WTA Cincinnati event. “We’ll see tomorrow, but I’m fine. I was able to recover well, I felt good physically today,” said Nadal who made quick work of

Nadal won his 25th Masters 1000 title and lifted his eighth trophy of the season to run his career title total to 58. Nadal feels ready to go for another title in Cincinnati which began on Sunday. He looked smooth on the court Sunday, giving no indication that his chronic knee problems are a current worry. He says his focus is now on Montreal and he will not be thinking ahead to the US Open.
Serena wins in Toronto
TORONTO: World number one Serena Williams made it look easy Sunday, routing Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-0 to win the WTA title in Toronto and signal her readiness for a US Open title bid. Williams needed just 61 minutes to capture her eighth title of 2013 and the 54th of her career, which moved her past Monica Seles into sole possession of ninth on the WTA career list in the Open Era. But she said the lopsided win belied the difficulty of winning any title.
Williams needed just 61 minutes to capture her eighth title of 2013 and the 54th of her career, which moved her past Monica Seles. “No tournament is ever easy, especially being in the position I am in,” Williams said. “The tournament starts and they expect you to win.” AFP

Dufner holds on to win
The 36-year-old American fired a final-round two-under par 68 to finish on 10-under par 270 for 72 holes, beating Furyk by two strokes. JIM SLATER Agence France-Presse ROCHESTER: Jason Dufner set aside emotional scars from squandering a major title two years ago to win the PGA Championship on Sunday, holding off Jim Furyk despite a bogey-bogey finish. The 36-year-old American, who had a four-shot lead with four holes to play but lost the 2011 PGA Championship, fired a final-round two-under par 68 to finish on 10-under par 270 for 72 holes, beating Furyk by two strokes. “It’s pretty neat to come back and win a PGA to be honest with you,” Dufner said. “You always carry those scars with you.” Dufner won the Wanamaker Trophy and the top prize of $1.445 million from the $8 million event with the lowest 72hole score at Oak Hill, breaking the mark of 274 by Jack Nicklaus at the 1980 PGA Championship. “It’s a great feeling to finally
win one,” Dufner said. “I can’t believe this is happening to me. It feels really, really good. It’s amazing to me this actually happened to me.” Dufner, who matched the 18hole record low in any major with a 63 in the second round, went 26 holes without a bogey
Woods’ Major nightmare continues World number one Woods spent much of the final round of the Championship touring the trees and testing the thick rough at Oak Hill. ROCHESTER: Tiger Woods says he is unconcerned about another year passing without another major win, but his bid to break the all-time record of Jack Nicklaus is clearly in jeopardy. World number one Woods spent much of Sunday’s final round of the PGA Championship touring the trees and testing the thick rough at Oak Hill’s 7,163yard layout on his way to a par70 to finish 72 holes on four-over par 284. Woods finished in a share of 40th to match his worst 72-hole professional result in a major from last year’s Masters, one spot worse than his share of 39th at the 2003 PGA Championship at Oak Hill. The 14-time major champion, chasing the record 18 major wins by Nicklaus, has not won a major title since the 2008 US Open.
And while Woods shared fourth at the Masters and sixth at the British Open this year, he has not broken 70 in his past 16 weekend rounds at a major. “I was close in the two of them,” Woods said of his year at the majors. “Certainly had a chance to win the Masters and the British this year. The other two, I just didn’t hit it good enough. Just the way it goes. “Is it concerning? No. I’ve been in half of them. So that’s about right. If you are going to be in three-quarters or half of them with a chance to win on the back nine, you have just got to get it done.” Contending in only two majors a year being “about right” is a far cry form the dominance Woods once showed, having won four majors in a row starting at the 2000 US Open. until the last two holes and by then it was too late to deny him the victory. “The last two holes were unforgettable,” Dufner said. “I wish I could have closed it out with no bogeys but I was glad to get the job done.” Among the first to congratu-
late Dufner was Keegan Bradley, the US rival who beat him in a playoff for the 2011 PGA Championship crown. “He just said, ‘I’m proud of you,’ and I said, ‘Thanks a lot. it means a lot for you to be here,’” Dufner said. Furyk, the 2003 US Open
champion, was second on 272 after shooting 71, making bogeys on the last two holes, which played the hardest of any this week at Oak Hill. “I needed to keep the pedal down and make pars there and keep the pressure on him and I just didn’t do it,” said Furyk. “If I could go back I would have to try and make par at 17 and 18 and try and put some heat on him.” The only other players to shoot 63 in a major-winning effort were Tiger Woods at the 2007 PGA, Greg Norman at the 1986 British Open, Ray Floyd at the 1982 PGA, Jack Nicklaus at the 1980 US Open and Johnny Miller at the 1973 US Open. Furyk, who has not won any title since the 2010 US PGA Tour Championship, began the day with a one-stroke lead but failed to win just as he did four times when leading after 54 holes last year, including at the US Open. Sweden’s Henrik Stenson was third.
Rough times for Scott The Australian made five birdies and five bogeys to settle for a final-round par-70. ROCHESTER: Masters champion Adam Scott missed his chance for his second major title, spending too much time in Oak Hill’s deep rough Sunday to make a charge at the PGA Championship. The 33-year-old Australian made five birdies and five bogeys to settle for a final-round par70 and a five-under 275 total, sharing fifth place five shots behind US winner Jason Dufner. “It would have been nice to get another win in a major seeing I had kind of put myself in position, but I didn’t, so I have got to push on and try and win a couple other tournaments this year to feel like I really got something out of my good play,” Scott said. Scott opened bogeybirdie and birdies at the ninth and 12th put him
seven-under, four off the lead with six holes to play. But forced to gamble, Scott found his way into Oak Hill’s unforgiving dense rough and made bogeys at 13, 16 and 18 against a lone late birdie at the par-3 15th. “It was a mixed bag, just a sloppy finish unfortunately. Hit a few poor drivers coming in and made it hard to make par,” Scott said. “I felt like I was still in there with a chance coming up 13 if I could do something special up there and 14. You never know. But the rough got me. I was in the long stuff too much to really have a good chance. You can’t escape it all the time. “I’m not frustrated at all. I wish I could have played better and I really didn’t. I just didn’t play clean enough golf.” AFP

IT ASHES 2013

Bell tolls for Oz hopes
Bell’s third hundred of the series rescued England from another top-order collapse and left them well-placed at stumps on Sunday’s third day at 234 for five in their second innings. SYDNEY: Yet another Ian Bell century, and yet another Shane Watson injury, have soured Australia’s drive towards victory in the fourth Ashes Test, Australia’s newspapers said Monday. Bell’s third hundred of the series rescued England from another top-order collapse and left them well-placed at stumps on Sunday’s third day at 234 for five in their second innings, a lead of 202 runs, with Bell 105 not out.
While Australia’s cricket writers praised Bell’s batsmanship, they bemoaned yet another injury to allrounder Watson, who left the field midway through an over with hip and groin pain. ”Bell, with the textbook technique, is the ultimate Ashes late bloomer,” Fairfax Media’s Chris Barrett said.” It took him 31 Test innings against Australia before he finally landed a Test century and now with a trio of tons
over the past month, he has notched up four hundreds in his past five Ashes contests.” The Daily Telegraph’s Malcolm Conn said Australia will have to create history if they are to win the fourth Test and may be forced to do it without Watson. ”Only twice in 133 years of Australia touring England has it managed to chase down more than 158 for victory,” Conn wrote. “"How much Shane
Watson can contribute remains in doubt.” The Australian’s Wayne Smith said the injury-plagued Watson now presents Australia with serious issues, both for the remainder of the fourth Test and going into the final Test starting at The Oval on August 21. “Not only does his injury leave Australia a bowler short for the rest of the England innings but it casts a cloud over his ability to bat as well -
at a time when Australia will need every man standing if it is to chase down what is already an intimidating fourth innings target,” Smith said. The Daily Telegraph’s Richard Hinds said England have left Australia struggling to ensure their fragile batting line-up is not forced to face a significantly larger total against the spin of Graeme Swann, and England’s talented seam attack, on a fourth and fifth day wicket. AFP
‘I’ve had to work really hard’ This was Bell’s 20th Test century in 92 Tests, with none of his 19 previous centuries at this level made in a losing cause (13 wins and six draws). JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse CHESTER-LE-STREET: Ian Bell insisted his job was far from finished after his third hundred of the series left England well-placed in the fourth Ashes Test against Australia at Chesterle-Street.England will start Monday’s fourth day on 234 for five in their second innings, a lead of 202 runs, with Bell 105 not out and nightwatchman Tim Bresnan unbeaten on four. Sunday saw England suffer their latest top-order collapse of this Ashes, with Bell taking guard at 49 for three, a lead of just 17 runs, after Australia fast bowler Ryan Harris’s treblestrike. But Bell’s fourth hundred in five Tests against Australia turned the tide for England, who at 2-0 up with two to play had already retained the Ashes. This was Bell’s 20th Test century in 92 Tests, with none of his 19 previous centuries at this level made in a losing cause (13 wins and six draws). However, the 31-year-old Warwickshire right-hander refused to take anything for granted.”Two hundred runs (lead), I’d rather have them on the board than chase them but we’ve seen already with Australia they’ll go all the way,” Bell, who made 109 in both England’s 14-run first Test win at Trent Bridge and their 347-run
second Test success at Lord’s, told reporters. “If we can start getting the lead over 300 I’ll be a little more confident but this Australian team will keep coming and a few of their batsmen are in a bit of
form now.”There certainly is a little bit of uneven bounce. It might do nothing for a while but there will be a decent delivery in there and the skill Ryan Harris has shown is to put enough balls in those right areas and know
one ball will do a little bit more or hit a crack and go sideways.” Bell’s early Test career against Australia was marked by repeated failures against the likes of bowling greats Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne and it
was not until both men had retired that he made his first Ashes hundred, with his 115 at Sydney in January 2011 helping England seal a 3-1 series win.”I believed I was good enough to score Test hundreds against Australia but it took a while,” Bell said. “I started against one of the best test teams of all-time and that was a real baptism. I learned a hell of a lot from some great players.” He added: “I’ve had to work really hard this series. I’ve got a lot of respect for this Australian attack.” Harris, whose 15-Test career has been blighted by injuries, took three wickets for 18 runs in 25 balls as he bowled Joe Root and had both England captain Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott caught behind. Instead it was all-rounder Shane Watson who broke down Sunday, the medium-pacer going off with a groin/hip problem. “When I left the room they were talking about him batting...we don’t know the full extent of the injury,” said Harris. And with Australia boasting a world-class batsman in captain Michael Clarke, who made 187 in the drawn third Test at Old Trafford, first-innings centurymaker Chris Rogers and dynamic opener David Warner, Harris said they were far from out of this match.

ROONEY WOULD BE MAD TO LEAVE, SAYS VIDIC
Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has told unsettled striker Wayne Rooney he would be mad to leave Old Trafford. Rooney’s future was the cause of more drama as the David Moyes era at United officially got underway with a 2-0 win over Wigan in the Community Shield.

COMMUNITY SHIELD
‘I’ll take care of RVP’ United manager David Moyes has said that he will use Robin van Persie wisely this season. The Dutchman scored both United’s goals in their 2-0 win over Wigan.
TOM WILLIAMS Agence France-Presse LONDON: Manchester United manager David Moyes hinted that Robin van Persie will be used more sparingly this season after the Dutchman’s brace put paid to Wigan Athletic in the Community Shield. Van Persie scored in each half at Wembley on Sunday to earn United a 2-0 win in the annual season curtain-raiser, as the English champions secured their fifth Community Shield success in seven years. The former Arsenal striker broke the deadlock with a fine sixth-minute header from Patrice Evra’s cross before doubling his tally shortly before the hour with a deflected shot. It sets him up for a tilt at matching or exceeding his haul of 30 goals from his debut United campaign, but Moyes does not want the team to become too dependent on a player who turned 30 last Tuesday. “It was a great header; 16 yards on the angle into the corner. He might not be renowned for that type of goal, but it was a brilliantly guided header from a

Goetze sinks Gyor
BERLIN: Germany star Mario Goetze scored twice as he made his Bayern Munich debut on Sunday in the European champions’ 4-1 friendly win at Hungary’s FC Gyor. Bayern opened the new Bundesliga season with a 3-1 win at home to Borussia Moenchengladbach on Friday, but Munich coach Pep Guardiola gave Goetze 30 minutes off the bench in a friendly at Hungarian champions Gyor. The 21-year-old Goetze, who cost Bayern 37 million euros ($49.3 million) from rivals Borussia Dortmund, scored his first goal just two minutes after coming off the bench then added a second just before the final whistle. He had five shots on goal in his 30 minutes and looked sharp 103 days after tearing his hamstring against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final as a Dortmund player. “For a first appearance, it could have gone worse,” said
Goetze. “It was only a friendly, but for me it was something special.” Less than 48 hours after the Gladbach win, Guardiola included just Thomas Mueller from the starting line-up from Friday’s Bundesliga opener. Gyor took a 40th-minute lead with a well-taken goal from Leandro Martinez. Bayern levelled through Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri on 58 minutes before Goetze came off the bench to give his side the lead after hitting the post, then drilling home the rebound. Shaqiri added his second and Bayern’s third before Goetze picked dribbled around the defence and lobbed the goalkeeper.
LA LIGA PREVIEW
In Spain, the talent rift widens Beneath the big two, the game in Spain has continued to reflect the general ailing Spanish economy with even clubs in the Champions League forced to sell their best players. KIERAN CANNING Agence France-Presse MADRID: Looking at the Spanish sports pages over the typically baking summer months, it would appear the Spanish game was in rude health both on and off the pitch. In Catalonia, Neymar has dominated attention after his 57 million euro ($74 million, £48.7 million) move from Santos to Barcelona was confirmed in June, whilst, in the capital, Real Madrid backed up their 69 mil-

that looks set to run well into the final days of the transfer window. But beneath the big two, the game in Spain has continued to reflect the general ailing Spanish economy with even clubs in the Champions League forced to sell their best players. As a result, the already colossal gap between Real and Barca and the rest continues to increase as do fears that by continuing to use an unbalanced TV deal that greatly favours the big two, La Liga descends further into a turgid two-horse race.
