Hyd lab to test DNA samples
PATNA: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sent eighteen samples to Hyderabad for DNA test in connection with the serial bomb explosions at Bodh Gaya’s Mahabodhi temple in Bihar, a police official said Friday. The NIA, which is probing the case, is yet to make any breakthrough. "Five days after the serial bomb explosions, no concrete leads (have come up) so far and NIA has sent 18 samples collected as evidence for DNA touch test to Hyderabad," said a police official in Gaya, about 100 km from here. The NIA officials also began to question private security guards of the Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee who are responsible for the internal security of the temple complex. Though NIA began a probe into the serial bomb explosions Sunday night itself, it formally took over the investigation after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar requested the Union home ministry Tuesday. The NIA detained six people and released all of them after questioning. The Bodh Gaya temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is where the Buddha, who was born in neighbouring Nepal, attained enlightenment around 2,550 years ago. IANS

What of Jagan, ask politicians in State SC ruling on those incarcerated for serious crimes has created a flutter among political community. And the prime question is how will it affect the fortunes of YSRC chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. Md INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The judgement of Supreme Court of India over barring jailed leaders from contesting elections has rocked the State as it affects the most prized person in jail — YSRC chief and Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. The news carried by a section of media following the judgement of the apex court hinted that YS Jagan Mohan would not be able to contest the next General Elections as he is being kept in jail and facing serious allegations. However, the legal community of the State itself is confused a lot over the issue. Speaking to Postnoon, senior High Court advocate Sri Ranga Rao said that Thursday’s SC judgement clearly bars YS Jagan from contesting the future elections. “SC judgment made it clear that leaders kept in jail for a long time and facing serious criminal charges can’t contest the elections. Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan also comes under the same category,” he said. However Rao hastened to add the judgment of the SC would not stand upon appeal as it would be reviewed by the

ers from voting. How can it be so? No law can bar anybody from casting their vote unless they are convicted,” he said. TDP leader Peddi Reddy said that the SC judgement would apply to all, including YS Jagan. Babloo Tyagi had killed Dhanesh’s uncle in 2005 and was in jail for the crime. He was currently out on bail. “Babloo had sustained three gunshot injuries. Dhanesh and Paresh have been admitted in a local hospital in Ghaziabad. Three big bullet holes were found on the wall of their house" said Superintendent of Police (Rural) Jagdish Sharma. “Both brothers also sustained gunshot injuries. A criminal case for attempt to murder has been registered against Babloo’s three accomplices,” police said. IANS

Principal Marlene Mannas with chief promoter Dr K Rajasekhar. The Swami Vivekananda Gurukul of Human Excellence aims at providing quality, affordable education.
MD INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com
I
n a small village called Dhannaram in Vikarabad, about 70km from Hyderabad, a trailblazing trend in education seems to be in the making. Proving the fallacy that quality education is always expensive, Swami Vivekananda Gurukul of Human Excellence, a CBSE-affiliated school, has pledged to give rural kids the best of facilities a City corporate school offers at an amazingly cheap fee. A bonus point, says the chief promoter and educationist Dr K Rajasekhar, is the education will not be a heretic move aiming at a tech degree but one that inculcates the core values propagated by the great saint-patriot Swami Vivekananda. “If the nation had taken Vivekananda’s course on education, much of the trauma the youth face today could have been avoided,” Dr Rajasekhar is sure. The school is run by YAGNA (Youth Awakening for Glorious Nation), which is striving towards instilling core values in budding citizens to make them responsible sons and daughters of India. The foundation takes inspiration from the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. It is significant that the foundation is instituted by medical practitioners “Even parents in villages today want their children to study in English medium schools but can’t afford it. We would meet their aspiration,” says Dr Rajasekhar. “It would be a quality education with human values so that a future citizen bearing ethical values is moulded. The school motto reflects the Swami’s three core values for a good citizen: Purity, truth, and

selflessness. “These three core values are very important for the development of every child. They would help in bringing out innate qualities of every student. These qualities have the power to change the entire world by turning children into great leaders of tomorrow. It is because of this we call our gurukul as the School of Human Excellence,” he adds. Dr Rajasekhar did not hide his anguish at the present-day commercialised education, AROUND THE
CITY
“Some private schools are charging lakhs of rupees even to admit students in nursery. There is really no need for them to charge such huge amounts. We want to change this system by showing the world right to acquire knowledge and right to avail quality medication do not require huge amounts of money as it is an inherent principle prescribed by our Constitution,” he said.
POLITICIANS AND MERCHANTS Dr Rajasekhar blamed the politi-
cians for the existing commercialisation of education. He has already made several enemies in Vikarabad by offering CBSEstandard education at cheaper rate. The fee in the school ranges from a paltry `3,500 to `5,000 for all the classes up to Class VII. But the doctor seems unperturbed. He said that he is ready to take on anybody for achieving the vision of implementing the teachings of Swami Vivekananda. “I know that many people would become my enemies for offering quality education at a very low price. But I am ready to take on anybody as I have undertaken this mission with a vision,” he said.
FIGHTER TO THE CORE
He is not worried because he has been a battler even in his student days. He was a very active student leader during medical college days. He led a huge agitation of junior doctors in 2004 and succeeded in removal of user charges imposed by the State government in government hospitals and also played a key role in removal of Non Resident Indian (NRI) quota from government colleges in order to help many aspirants of medical education. “The government had implemented the draconian policies
to extract money from poor people of the State. How can the State, which is responsible for the welfare of people, charge money to provide medicare? We protested against this as junior doctors and our agitation was a great success as it forced the State to fulfil our demands,” he recalled. It was then that Dr Rajasekhar, along with some of his friends, resolved to change society by inculcating the values of Vivekananda. To achieve this vision, he set up YAGNA in 2007 and started serving orphans and other needy people. Advocating another great need to offer medicare at affordable prices, the doctors have plans to set up an exclusive hospital. “Our proposed hospital would provide healthcare at very low prices. For example, we will only charge `2,000 for a surgery which cost `70,000 at another hospital. Our idea is to tell the people that healthcare is as cheap as any other free service,” he says.
CONFRONTATION
The revolution pioneered by the school has angered commercialminded education institutions. When the school authorities, led by its Principal Marlene Mannas, went to nearby villages as part of their campaign to admit rural students into their school, parents gave them a warm welcome and admitted their children, who were studying in other private schools, into the gurukul. Seeing this sudden change, the private school managements, who were charging exorbitant prices, quarrelled with the parents. But thanks to the guidance of Marlene, the parents, most of them semi-literate, gave befitting answer to the confronting private school managements.

more degree student, J Sunitha, was missing from her home. Her father, J Narsing Rao, has lodged a complaint at the Chilkaguda police station. Rao, a resident of Warasiguda in Secunderabad, stated in his complaint that his 18-year-old daughter Sunitha is a second-year degree college student. She has not returned home since July 10. In this instance also, the father suspects the involvement of a youth, Ram Naresh, who
seems to have been trying to inveigle her into love affairs but she had been resisting the move. It is believed that the youth has organised a kidnap of the girl to get married. The investigation is on, said the Chilkalguda police. In both the instances, parents have been frantically trying to locate their daughters but so far their efforts have been in vain. Police said the probe has begun and the two would be traced soon.
BILATERAL TIES
India, US to hold talks on trade and investment The US envoy underscored the importance of India's constructive engagement to a successful outcome at the WTO meet this December.
WASHINGTON: With a growing trust deficit muddling their business relations, India and the United States have agreed to prepare for a policy dialogue on trade and investment issues at the ministerial level. Visiting Indian commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma and the newly appointed US trade representative Michael Froman agreed to such a dialogue at a two-hour meeting here Thursday — their first since President Barack Obama's former top economic advisor took over his new role last month. Discussions in the TPF are generally organised around five focus groups covering Agriculture; Innovation and Creativity; Investment; Services;
TARIFFS AND NON-TARIFF BARRIERS. Froman assured Sharma that USTR "stands ready to engage immediately with our Indian counterparts on concrete steps to strengthen our bilateral and
multilateral engagement." The meeting covered a full range of trade and investment challenges and opportunities of interest to the US and India, both bilaterally and multilaterally, it said. Sharma and Froman "discussed the importance of a positive innovation climate for all sectors, including green technology, pharmaceuticals, and information technology, and agreed to continue these discussions AROUND THE

under the framework of the Trade Policy Forum." Froman also underscored the importance of India's constructive engagement to a successful outcome at the World Trade Organization ministerial in Bali, Indonesia, this December, according to the readout. In raising issues of interest to the US, Froman welcomed the announcement that India's
Preferential Market Access policy is to be reviewed and modified. Froman noted, however, "the continued concern of the United States and other trading partners regarding the growing number of other localization barriers" that "seek to favour India's domestic manufacturers, suppliers and innovators at the expense of foreign firms and workers."

Microsoft helped NSA: Report Microsoft claims it only cooperates with US intelligence services when it receives subpoenas and does not ‘participate in ... a broader voluntary national security program to gather customer data’. LONDON: Microsoft cooperated closely with US intelligence agencies to facilitate the interception of private messages from its users, according to National Security Agency (NSA) documents revealed on Thursday by The Guardian. New information leaked by former CIA analyst Edward Snowden reveals how the Silicon Valley giant helped the NSA bypass the encryption system that protects conversations between users on the Outlook.com chat website. According to the documents, the agency was already able to access e-mail messages sent via Outlook — which includes the Hotmail service — before the program encrypts them for secure sending. The quirky ways of civic workings L ook at the two pictures. One is of Mahalakshmi Mansion on MG Road and the other is G Block of Secretariat. The mansion is a spooky, mossy place that spells murder at night. Trees are sprouting from craters and air conditioners are whirring from the cracking walls — all at the same time! This sangam of nature and machine can be found in our City because of rabid corruption among civic officials and police. While City Light hotel, which ignored the warnings of creaking edifice, was placed on the ‘fit’ list, this mansion that sees thousands of footfall a day too remains intact. But as a wit pointed out, what could one say if the nerve centre of the State’s governance, the Secretariat, ignored warnings? A mayor in a city is the first citizen who holds the city and its population with parental care. What use talking about them when we don’t understand the basics of such positions? When a crisis or a massive tragedy happens, Hyderabad mayor Mohd Majid Hussain is not seen. When Dilsukhnagar blasts took place, the CM was the first to be there but the mayor, who should have been the inspiring presence, was not seen. But the trouble is our leaders have nothing meaningful to say despite all the trouble the security takes to ensure their safety. While local leaders could be of some help in times of disaster, VIP visits serve hardly any purpose. This was once again witnessed at the City Light crash site when the CM’s visit threw the security to apoplexy. very day scores of old buildings are being demolished in various parts of the City under the demolition drive launched by the GHMC after the City Light Hotel incident. But what’s surprising is that while most of the age old buildings, which are on the verge of collapsing, are left untouched, the GHMC seems to be in a hurry to bring down houses in which people have not been residing for years now. Since Tuesday, the GHMC has demolished 111 old structures which are in a dilapidated state. Out of them more than 80 structures are residential houses, interestingly even among those 80, more than half are just small rooms country tiled which were constructed years ago and people no longer live in it. Postnoon visited few of such spots and found that most of these residential structures that have been demolished are not as harmful as the big buildings that have not yet been identified and left untouched. Moreover these houses have a common compound wall and the demolition is effecting the adjacent houses. “Nobody is living in the house next to ours, it’s just one room that was constructed by the owners so that the land does not remain vacant and turn into a dump yard. Yesterday the GHMC officials came without any prior notice and demolished the house. Since my house is right next to it, the common compound wall too was demolished and, now it is inconvenient for us,” says Nagender who lives right next to the house at Banjara Hills, Road no. 4. On Thursday the GHMC officials had to face the wrath of a few local residents who stated that the civic body did not give them any prior notice about the demolition. “Why is the GHMC

overlooking the huge buildings that are in the heart of the City and demolishing small houses of poor people. Despite our protest the GHMC demolished the house, which would not cause any danger since nobody lived n the house. Neither is the GHMC paying compensation for these poor people to at least construct a new compound wall in this land. They will have to spend more money now to clear the debris and reconstruct. The civic authorities are being very insensitive to the poor said,” Gowardhan a local leader of Attapur village. Similar is the case in Kapra, Cherlapally and other such areas where the GHMC seems to be targeting houses where no one lives. One reason social activists say could be because of the resentment from influential occupants, hence easy target could be houses where no one loves anymore. “After what happened at City Light Hotel, the civic body did not want any fingers to be raised at them. So immediately they took up the
demolition drive. In order to show big numbers the GHMC is going and demolishing big houses first. From years together old buildings including various government offices are left untouched. Why is the GHMC not demolishing those and going to areas so far from the City to demolish the houses there?” questioned social activist V Ramchandraiah. The GHMC authorities, however, state that they are going by the list of the identified dilapidated buildings and big or small will demolish all those builds on the list. Speaking to Postnoon the GHMC Chief City Planner GV Raghu said, “If tomorrow, even any small house collapses, people will point fingers at us. We are doing our duty of demolishing all the buildings that have been listed.” When asked why the civic body has not yet recognised prominent buildings under the dilapidated condition he said. “Every day our town planners and engineers have been identifying new buildings that are in a dilapidated state. Slowly big or small we will make sure that all the old buildings will be demolished so that there would be no danger and threat to lives,” he added.
tures. During the process, the ball is either dropped onto or swung into the structure that is to be demolished. The ball and crane, however, is unsuitable for all demolition applications.
Ways of demolition Implosion
I
mplosion is a violent bursting inward that allows the sequential elimination of structure supports. Enough explosives are used to eliminate the critical vertical structural supports. The placement of the charges and the sequential detonation timing is if vital importance, allowing the collapse of the building induced by the weight of the structure.
High Reach Arm
T
he threshold for defining a high reach demolition is when it reaches a height of more than 20 meters. This method is usually formed by a base machine, a demolition arm consisting of three sections or by a telescopic boom and a primary tool attached to the base machine (crushers, shears, hammers).
Selective Demolition
A
lso known as strip-out, this process is very popular right now. As recycling and salvaging of material are very attractive to builders during these days, allowing them to re-use material or recycle it. Selective interior / exterior demolition or recycle of wood, brick, metals and concrete are all recycled for future use in new structures.

CRIME
He’s old enough to rape, young enough for leniency Postnoon gets reactions from celebrities and social activists regarding the deferred verdict on the Delhi gang-rape-accused juvenile.
POOJA BEDI, ACTRESS
A juvenile and a barbarian are two different things. There was nothing petty, unaware or childish about what the accused did. He is just a few months away from being an official adult. I personally think that such technicalities should be shot down. There are many cases where minors have got a death penalty or life imprisonment and this case should follow suit. We cannot let monsters like him back to hurt more innocent people. Will courts take responsibility if he commits another heinous crime? A bad person is just a bad person. And needs to be punished severely.
Rather than complaining, I think people should start respecting the law of the land and have trust in our judiciary system. Judges are more aware about the laws and the repercussions of their action than we do. They study the case thoroughly and take all the facts into consideration before
RAJANI GUDURI, PRINCIPAL MAGISTRATE OF JUVENILE JUSTICE BOARD
The Juvenile Justice Act as it stands today provides that a juvenile can’t be sentenced for and disturbing. Even if the juvenile gets 14 years of imprisonment, the situation that persists in India today will remain the same.
RAM MOHAN, HELP NGO HEAD
RENSYL DE SILVA, DIRECTOR AND WRITER
I think this should be treated as a special case and the accused must considered as an adult for the sentence. This particular crime is no act of a child, but that of a vicious adult. This must be considered as rarest of the rare case. Such crimes are bound to happen in this country since women are still not treated on par with men. They are objectified and from childhood boys are not taught to treat girls with respect.

passing the judgement. In general not pertaining to this particular case, I think that a juvenile’s mind is not completely formed and there are many idiotic things that a 17-year-old can do and later regret. They deserve a second chance. Having said that, in this particular scenario, this might not be the case.
I think more than the number of years that the juvenile will be sentenced to I am worried about the attitude of the society. In spite of the hue and cry after the death of the girl in Delhi, rapes still happen in the most gruesome fashion in different parts of the country. And the society has adopted a ‘chalta hain’ attitude towards these crimes. It is quite disheartening
Great many changes can be brought about if the police which is the law enforcing body in the country fall in line. Many a time have I noticed that cops are unaware of the amendments made on the act. This is ridiculous since these are the very officers who are responsible for implementing
more than three years. But an amendment must be made to the Act, so that there can be exceptions made in heinous crimes and sentences extended, like in this one. The court should not be lenient because he was minor, as he was reported to be the most bbrutal. Three years is not severe enough, he deserves a harsher term. He should held be in a protective custody with special provision for reformation.

For instance, according to 2006 amendment in the Juvenile Justice Act, one is not produce a child between the age-group of 12 and 15 rescued from prostitution in front of a magistrate but the child welfare committee. However, the practice is being followed and when asked about it both the cops and magistrate were clueless about the amendment. I think that if the law enforcing body is aware and more active

For a person capable of such brutality, three years is not going to be enough for him to reform or repent. The term must be extended. In fact, age should not be a criteria for the law. We have cases of 12-year- olds attacking and raping five- year olds. Should they be let go easily? Punishments should be case by case depending on the severity of the crime. Otherwise there can be no justice done and the juveniles will have no fear of the law.

SHEHLA RASHID, SOCIAL ACTIVIST
We can't change our legal system in reaction to one or few incidents. As we have seen in Kashmir, where the juvenile age bar has now been raised to 18 from 16, the justice system is biased against the underprivileged. Be it death penalty or punishment for juvenile delinquency or communal hatred laws, at the receiving end are always the marginalised. Rather than cracking down on our children with a vengeance, we, as a society, must also introspect on the environment that we provide to our children. Add to that the apathy of the state and the society. Crime stems from social injustice.
CHINMAYI, SINGER A person cannot be tried twice for the same crime in our country. There are plenty of loopholes in our laws. If initial reports are to be believed, this juvenile was the worst of them all, but we don't know the complete truth. It's not just this rape case, there is so much that needs to change and at so many levels. We keep blaming the system while as a society itself we are a failure. It does seem unfair that the law lets him off with only three years, but on the flipside we can be happy that he's going to be in a correctional facility, while thousands of rapists walk free, perhaps taking the same routes to work as we do.

Summer sizzle fizzles The downfall of flippant dreams began when the Tom Cruise-starrer Oblivion bombed like a Scientologist at a conspiracy theory conference.
I
t was supposed to be the year the box office records tumbled like a drunken trapeze artist. The titles sent shivers of glee through every fanboy on the planet and beyond (yes some do live on a rock in the darkest recess of the universe, usually referred to as ‘their parent’s basement’): Oblivion, After Earth, World War Z, Man of Steel, Pacific Rim, et al. And so when summer began studio execs were already signing off on their new homes in Malibu and on the banks of Lake Como…oh how those majestic temples to avarice will now lie vacant. The downfall of flippant dreams began when the Tom Cruise-starrer Oblivion bombed like a Scientologist at a conspiracy theory conference. Oblivion was so devoid of anything remotely resembling emotion that even Cruise’s famous smile seemed dimmer under the harsh postapocalyptic sun. Then there was ostensibly M Night Shyamalan’s
comeback flick, After Earth. One thing is now for certain, M should simply stop directing and take up something he’s better at, like talking about how he sees ‘dead careers’. The vehicle turned out to be nothing more than a melodramatic acting class conducted by Will Smith for his gratingly serious son Jaden (of course the ‘have-date-willwear-iron-man-costume’ incident tends to put a dent in that idea). A documentary on String Theory narrated by Keanu Reeves seemed veritably spellbinding after that. So hopes rested on Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. He, under the watchful eye of Christopher ‘I’m Batman’ Nolan, was set to make sure the underpants remained on the inside this time. Well, in that, he did succeed. But if you thought The Avengers had too much over-the-top action, then Man of Steel would send you into a state of stunned catatonia. The abandon
with which Snyder and his ripped, but still dopey, superhero and his nemeses ripped up Metropolis and its suburbs was reminiscent of the Battle of Stalingrad (yes, the ACTUAL battle). Man of Steel proved once and for all that no matter what you do with the Superman storyline, he’s still essentially a boy scout in a cape. Would Brad Pitt’s World War Z save the summer? Fingers were crossed and big toes snuggled against that one next to them (we could have looked it up, but why bother). World War Z certainly had its moments, but in the end, Max Brooks’s brilliant book was discarded for a franchise-generating piece of Hollywood hokum that even zombies wouldn’t watch. Glum Brad, equals Bad Brad. I can assure you that
Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is going to basically be Godzilla versus Giant Robot and Idris Elba’s ‘we have cancelled the apocalypse’ speech will have Bill ‘El Presidente’ Pullman gnashing his teeth in anger. It’s too much to hope that Hollywood will finally realise that bigger is not always better, but at least the shellacking the studios have taken this summer, should make them sit up and realise that if it hasn’t come from Marvel, it’s not worth doing. Thankfully we have Martin Scorsese riding to the rescue. Wolf of Wall Street looks like an absolute stunner. Thank god for Leo eh (and no, we won’t mention Jay Gatsby now will we ol’ sport)

Lawless Dir: John Hillcoat Cast: Shia LeBeouf, Tom Hardy Penned by Nick Cave and centring around a gang of moonshine runners in Prohibitionaddled America, Lawless is a corker of a film. Fast-paced, well written and featuring one of Hardy’s best performances it’s a standout of the genre in recent times. Gary Oldman is a cracking kingpin, Guy Pearce a menacing psychopath and John Hillcoat’s (The Road) direction keeps things ticking along nicely. Violent it is, but then again so is Man of Steel and you watched that didn’t you.

Luther: Season 3 dris Elba does so much more than kill giant sea creatures…so much more. Season 3 of the acclaimed British TV series Luther began last week and if you’ve already seen the previous two seasons you’ll know it’s darker than a moonless night, blindfolded. Playing Luther, a cop who works in shades of grey, Elba is a superbly brooding protagonist surrounded by a sea of bleak that only the East End of London can deliver. This series once again proves that when it comes to TV the Brits are the best.
Killing Season Dir: Mark Steven Johnson Cast: Robert De Niro, John Travolta orget, for a moment, that Mark Steven Johnson directed Daredevil, and concentrate purely on the star wattage created when you pit two Hollywood legends against each other. In Killing Season, De Niro plays and American veteran and Travolta plays a Serbian veteran who find themselves involved in a lethal game of cat and mouse in the mountains. A sort of Deliverance meets Goodfellas. Epic!
Ruth Wilson he was the one that gave Idris Elba a run for his money in Luther where her seductive sociopath had men drooling in fear and lust in equal measure, and then she stole the show in The Lone Ranger. Ruth has come a long way since her role as Jane Eyre in the TV mini-series. Don’t miss her opposite Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson in Saving Mr Banks, releasing in December this year.

Girls throng to school in Swat as Malala tackles UN

hen the Pakistani Taliban shot Malala Yousafzai in the head, their message to the world was simple: girls have no right to an education and their dreams of a better future should be crushed. The attack portrayed the world’s only Muslim nuclear power in an appalling light as Western leaders and celebrities fell over themselves to turn Malala into a global icon of child rights. But while she gears up to address the UN General Assembly on Friday -- her 16th birthday and nine months since the shooting -- more girls than ever in her home, Pakistan’s northwestern Swat valley, are in school. Educationalists say it has less to do with Malala’s fame and more to do with a growing confidence that far from being resurgent, Taliban influence is declining in Swat. “Many students were actually scared when the government named a college after Malala,” said Anwar Sultana, head mistress of Government Girls High School No 1, the oldest in Mingora, the main town in Swat. Last December, around 150 girls at another school protested against the renaming of their college after the injured schoolgirl, fearing it would make them a target for militants. They tore up and stoned pictures of Malala, since nominated for the Nobel Peace prize and now being privately educated in Britain, accusing her of abandoning Pakistan. But Sultana says more girls are now going to school because people feel more liberated as more time passes since the Pakistan army quashed a 2007-9 Taliban insurgency in the valley. AFP

US IMMIGRATION
13
ALL IS NOT WHAT IT SEEMS IN THE REFORM DRIVE THE INSIDE STORY Stephen Collinson
E
ven in hopelessly divided Washington, everyone is agreed, something must be done about immigration reform — the big ticket political issue of the year. But as often in the treacherous ways of the US capital, what the power brokers say may disguise reality rather than clarify it. “Inaction is not an option,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney. “This is a problem that demands addressing,” said Republican Senator John McCain Thursday. “Speaker Boehner and the Republican leadership realize that doing nothing is not an option,” said Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer. And Boehner himself said: “a vast majority of our members do believe that we have to wrestle with this problem.” So does the sudden outbreak of bipartisan agreement herald a breakthrough in the stodgy political inertia? Unlikely. The agreement on action to fix what everyone believes is a “broken” immigration system is more accurately a smokescreen to disguise the fact there is no
consensus on exactly what to do. A bipartisan coalition passed a massive immigration bill in the Senate, which includes a path to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants, and a $46 billion border security effort. For President Barack Obama, the bill would offer a historic bauble for a second term legacy that is worryingly thin — and would honor promises that won millions of
Hispanic votes in 2008 and 2012. National Republican leaders meanwhile know that blocking immigration reform — a project dear to increasingly important Hispanic voters — could hurt in presidential elections for a generation. That is why Republican starlet Senator Marco Rubio took the perilous decision to work for the reform bill, despite the risk
of alienating the conservative grass roots. Ironically, a majority of votes in favor of the Senate bill seems to exist in the House. “At this moment, if votes were called for comprehensive immigration reform there are more than 218 votes,” Democratic congressman Luis Gutierrez said. A Huffington Post analysis pointed out that if all 201 Democrats back the bill in the House, only 20 or so majori-
ty Republicans would be needed to secure passage. But the political calculations are decisive — such a solution would likely splinter Boehner’s already tenuous hold on his restive caucus. So the Speaker says he will not pass any immigration bill, without a majority of Republicans voting in favor —
meaning around 118 members would have to back reform. But the political logic of doing so is lost on Republicans from solidly conservative districts with few Hispanic voters, where the idea of “amnesty” is reviled. National political considerations also pale for Republicans who fear nothing more than a nominating challenge from the right. The White House is working hard to up the political pain for Republicans should they block the bill, stressing its economic and moral benefits. In effect, the argument is a preview of a 2014 mid-term election campaign theme for Obama, should immigration reform fail. “It would be a shame if this important piece of legislation ... would be blocked because of concerns by some House members in the Republican Party about primary challenges from the far right,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said. Some observers still believe reform is possible — even if it falls short of the ambitious plan Obama wants. Insulating themselves from the charge they are doing nothing, Republican House leaders are taking up immigration not in the comprehensive form favored by the Senate, but stepby-step. AFP

hat if the body is delivered without soul? The reported move of the Congress to declare a Telangana State sans Hyderabad comes on the time-tested theory — buy time and postpone trouble for immediate gain. If it finally comes to that, the Congress knows very well that the idea would be rejected by the TRS instantly. Hyderabad holds half the revenue of the entire Telangana. To set up a capital of Hyderabadcalibre will take 10 years and tons of money, it is said. “Telangana without Hyderabad is economically unviable,” say economists too. Hyderabad a while ago. This made it clear that the Congress would declare Telangana without Hyderabad and when the TRS starts agitation for Hyderabad, the process can be delayed further and dragged on till 2014 or 2015. There are risks in giving up Hyderabad for Telangana, especially for the industrialists from the Seemandhra and Rayalaseema. For one, the infrastructure Hyderabad has today is not easy to be re-created elsewhere. At the same time, as the T minus H is rejected, the stalwarts from Seemandhra-Rayala regions will get enough time to collect their wits and ask for impossible compensation in lieu of Hyderabad, which will stall the issue further and the Congress can look the injured party. Congress is angling for a win-win situation, it seems.

ppal and its peripheral areas are slowly emerging as the second IT belt of the City after the sought after Hitec City. Residential development will only flourish with growth of industries and infrastructure in the surroundings of that area.
“IT SEZs like NSL, Raheja IT Park (Pocharam), Infosys, Genpact have created a lot of employment opportunities here. Government organisations like National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), The Centre For Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) and The Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) are also driving the real estate growth in this locality. Metro rail from Nagole to Shilparamam, connecting east of the City to the west, passes through Uppal and its peripheral areas like Survey of India, NGRI and Habshiguda,” said J Venkat Reddy, MD, AV Constructions who is also the president of Uppal Builders’ Association. “This Metro line can bring a huge difference in time. For instance, a commuter can travel
from Uppal to Hitec City in around 30min. The locality will also be well connected to all other corners of the City through Metro rail. In a way, it will wipe of distances as commuters can travel to any corner of the City within minutes,” he said. Generally, the traffic moves to west from all other parts of the City during peak hours. With the IT industry growth in Uppal, the

traffic around surrounding areas will be limited to this part of the City. “Even the government’s is intending for bring a balanced growth by creating another IT hub to this (East) side of City. Availability of government land also adds to this,” Reddy said. Evolution of IT industries along the Warangal national highway is also pushing the growth of the residential sector. Already major SEZs are spread out around the peripheral areas of Uppal like Pocharam (Warangal national highway), Habisguda and Ramanthpur. For instance, the Infosys campus at Pocharam will be spread over 447 acres with a total investment of Rs1,250 crore. This campus is expected to seat over 25,000 people and will be completed by 2017 in three phases. More than 10,000 people are already working in the campus. ment of thousands of affordable residential flats in Sanskruthi Township in Pocharam gave spur to the residential growth. Talking about the property values, Reddy said, “Land and flat prices in this area are affordable as compared to the west of the City. The flat prices are around Rs2,200 per sft and Rs2,500 per sft in standalone apartments and in a gated community respectively. Recent real estate growth in the City increased the values of this locality by 20 per cent in the last six months. Any employee who earns a salary of Rs50,000 can buy a property in this area.
However, to afford a house in the west, a person has to earn more than Rs1 lakh every month. But, one has to realise that the prices in the City whether it is east or west are low as compared to the other cities like Bangalore and Chennai,” Like many other areas in the City, underground water levels are a worrying factor in this locality. “Builders could only find water at a depth of over 1,000 feet in most of the areas of this locality. However, the difficulty for peripheral areas here can be sorted out to an extent with the availability of municipal water in the future. There will be municipal water. Work is in process connecting Mediapally to Uppal. However, this may take time as the process is in the tender stage,” Reddy added. The State government is also working at starting operations of the 150-bed Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences in the Bibinagar campus.

DUBAI: which is touted to be the most popular and worldclass property investment destination in the Middle East, has started to witness a recovery of its property market post the financial crisis. In 2012, real estate prices recovered for the first time, growing by 10% y/y, according to the Dubai Land Development (DLD) authority’s data and as quoted in various regional media. Real estate transactions in Dubai had increased by 8% to Dh154 million in 2012. Not surprisingly, this recovery is backed by huge investments been made by expatriates, particularly from India. Non-resident Indians (NRIs) are comfortably amongst the top five investor communities in the region. With their natural affinity towards India, and against the depreciation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar, could the NRI community’s real estate investment decisions be changing in favour of the Indian market? For Indian real estate, general perception amongst buyers/ investors is that prices have increased dramatically over the last few years. Immediately following the Lehman-collapse period, Indian property prices witnessed increases — averaging ~40-42% across all major markets (as per Jones Lang LaSalle India’s Real Estate Intelligence Service data — see chart). Even in cities like Mumbai, where capital values are already high, returns stood at 66% during the same period. As against this, DLD data for Dubai suggests property prices witnessed a 65% slump in the four-year period prior to 2012, thereby justifying the question whether a 10%

rally in 2012 is all that significant. More recently, the Indian rupee (INR) has seen ~12.0% depreciation against the US dollar since the start of May till June 2013, thereby forcing its value down against all other currencies pegged to the US dollar — including the UAE Dirham (AED). As a consequence, the Indian rupee has also depreciated against the AED by ~12.0% during the same period. Merely the incremental return of ~12.0% owing to exchange rate fluctuation is comparable to the 10-12% of total returns expected by DLD in the near-term from investment in Dubai real estate. Similar incremental returns can be expected from investments made by NRIs from other parts of the MiddleEast where the local currency is mostly pegged to the US dollar (see Table 1). Apart from strict visa rules in the Middle East region, there are certain regulatory obstacles in buying a property in the Emirates. These are also other critical factors that can help sustain NRI interest in Indian property market – including: n The higher economic growth in India n Improving infrastructure and renewed political focus on timelines for new infrastructure initiatives n Rising demand for commercial space in the market n Social infrastructure n Price trends Putting these findings into perspective, the recent fall in the Indian rupee could potentially act as a trigger for the NRI community in the Middle East to switch focus towards properties back in India.

The stomach is one of the most prominent but least understood of all the organs. We bust some myths about the digestive system's star.

Myth 3
You need to lose a lot of weight to counter acid reflux. FACT: Even losing a couple of kilos will help reduce acid reflux. And since most people lose belly fat first, the slightest bit of weight loss helps relieve this condition. There should be a significant reduction of heartburn within weeks of starting a weightloss programme.
Don't go by gut feelings Myth 1
Myth 4
Eating less causes your stomach to shrink.
Eating spicy foods cause stomach ulcers.
FACT: The size of an adult's stomach remains the same, unless it is surgically altered. The stomach expands to hold the food you intake, but less food will not make it shrink. Cutting down on food will cause your appetite to reduce, not your stomach.
FACT: Most cases of stomach ulcers are caused by a gut bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. While some foods aggravate stomach ulcers, they do not cause them. There is a higher possibility of getting stomach ulcers if you consume a lot of nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin.
Myth 2
Thin people have smaller stomachs than fat people.
Myth 5
Digestion takes place mainly in the stomach
FACT: The size of the stomach has nothing to do with weight. Thin people have stomachs the same size as, or sometimes larger than, the stomachs of fat people. People who have undergone bariatric surgery to reduce the size of their stomachs have been found to still put on weight.
ANEWS PP-LYBRIEFS YOURSELF
FACT: The small intestine is where most of the digestion takes place. The stomach takes in the food, then churns it and breaks it into tiny particles called "chyme." The chyme are then released in small batches into the small intestine, where most digestion occurs.

Technology FIXED PRICE Apple case cracks open e-books, digital goods pricing
SURFACE PRICES CUT Microsoft is planning to cut the price of its Surface RT tablets. The cut could occur as early as next week, with each model being cut by $150. Microsoft's move to cut prices on its Surface RT tablets follows slow sales, and efforts to sell the devices elsewhere at lower rates. The software maker recently launched an education program to sell the Surface RT to schools at $199, and it has been clearing stock of its devices at its Tech-Ed and Worldwide Partner conferences recently. The price cut will come just days after the company hinted at replacement Surface RT and Surface Pro models during its Worldwide Partner Conference on Wednesday.

ruling by an American judge that Apple illegally conspired to fix e-book prices could boost competition in the market for all kinds of digital goods, including music and movies, analysts say. Wednesday's decision by a federal judge also may allow online retail giant Amazon to cement its dominance, though pricing models are still evolving. "The consumer is the huge winner," said David Balto, a Washington antitrust lawyer and former policy director for the Federal Trade Commission. "Apple's policies clearly increased prices, and if permitted Apple would have used this formula to raise prices in numerous markets. This is a landmark decision that demonstrates the value of strong antitrust enforcement." US District Judge Denise Cote's ruling followed a three-week trial in New York in June. She concluded that Apple was liable for "facilitating and encouraging" a collective effort by five publish-
ers to end price competition for e-books. She has ordered a new hearing to determine damages. David Crane, a University of Michigan specialist in
Amazon is believed to control around twothirds of US e-book sales — down from 90 per cent a few years ago — while Apple's share is said to be around 20 per cent. antitrust law, said Apple would now be heavily impeded from influencing the pricing of content. "Whether it's music or movies or newspapers or whatever it is, basically Apple wants to be heavily involved in reformulating the business model of how pricing is set and who decides on release dates and so forth," Crane said. "This kind of precedent says 'Apple: be very careful with anything other than having one-on-one negotiations with content providers.'" The Justice Department
has said it will seek interim relief and a court-ordered independent monitoring trustee. A group of 33 states are seeking unspecified damages against Apple. A class-action suit against the technology giant could also be bolstered by judge Cote's ruling. Apple has said it will appeal and "continue to fight against these false accusations." Some analysts noted that the court decision could help Amazon assert its dominance in electronic books, and that the online retailer has moved to the "agency" model which Apple helped impose. "Everybody is on agency now," said Roger Kay, analyst at Endpoint Technology Associates. Before Apple came on the scene, Amazon used a "wholesale" model and sold e-books at the cut-rate price of $9.99 for most titles. "Amazon was taking profit out for everyone else is well," Kay said. "Now it's busted open. But Amazon also benefits from higher prices." Amazon is believed to control around two-thirds of US e-book sales — down
from 90 per cent a few years ago — while Apple's share is said to be around 20 per cent. E-book sales have been cooling after a few years of sizzling growth. A survey by the Association of American Publishers said 2012 growth in such sales was 41 per cent — an impressive figure but below the red-hot pace of recent years including 2011, when e-book sales doubled. Michael Weinberg, vice president at the digital advocacy group Public Knowledge, said the marketplace is still sorting out the model for e-books and other content. He hopes the case will raise awareness that the ebook market is being constrained by digital "locks," sometimes called digital rights management, which keep electronic content tied to one device. "If you have all these files on your Kindle, and can move them to other devices, that would help the market grow," he said. "While no one would argue that major publishers have fully come to terms with this lesson it is encouraging that they are at least aware enough of it to discuss it." AFP

The changes, noted in the three executives’ Twitter profiles on Thursday, are likely an effort to continue building out the company’s international presence, while potentially grooming Twitter’s US-based executives for expanded roles within the organisation. While Twitter has obviously seen significant traction in the United States over the past seven years, the company needs to beef up its user base and advertising accounts overseas, areas that have the largest potential for growth.

THERE’S A BIT OF ME IN EVERY FILM : RAHUL HEMANTH KUMAR Hemanth.k@postnoon.com t’s been nearly 11 months since Rahul was last seen onscreen, but he is unperturbed by this long break of sorts, which he terms as inevitable for a newcomer like him. His debut film Andhala Rakshahi might not have done quite well at the box-office, but did manage to make an impact and more than anything it has set the ball rolling for Rahul’s acting career in Telugu. “A film like Andhala Rakshahi, in a way, is the best thing to have happened to my career. I still keep getting several tweets and messages from a section of the audience who says that it’s among their all-time favourite films. Even those who didn’t like it, still talk about several scenes which didn’t work for them, which means it actually made an impact on them too. In that sense, it wasn’t a film which people would easily forget and despite my long break, I haven’t lost out much. I wanted to wait till Andhala Rakshahi was released and see what it does to my career. I signed my second film two months after Andhala Rakshasi released. More than the craft, what’s important here is the emotional graph and the message it tries to convey. The whole take on how I get married and deal with marriage is quite funny,” he says. It couldn’t be more different from the character he had played in Andhala Rakshasi and Rahul admits, “In Andhala Rakshasi, I played a very intense role and it’s never clear what’s going in his mind, whereas in Pelli Pusthakam, I am a fun loving and hyper energetic guy who’s just out of college and all of a sudden, he has to deal with marriage. It’s complete opposite of what I have done in my previous film.” So is this character closer to his offscreen persona? “I don’t know what to say. I guess, there’s a bit of me in every film I do. In terms of how I behave, perhaps I can relate to my character in the film.” His next film Nenem Chinna Pillana? is being produced by D

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Kittel gives Germany a further boost
Marcel Kittel’s latest stage win made it yet another day to remember for German cycling at a time when the sport needs all the help it can get. ANDY SCOTT Agence France-Presse TOURS: Marcel Kittel’s latest Tour de France stage win on Thursday made it yet another day to remember for German cycling at a time when the sport needs all the help it can get to restore its image in the country. Kittel edged out British sprint star Mark Cavendish by half a wheel on the line at the end of stage 12 in Tours to record his third stage win on what is just his second Tour de France. The 25-year-old previously won the crash-marred opening stage in Bastia and then pipped compatriot Andre Greipel on the line to win stage 10 in Saint-Malo on Tuesday. With Greipel winning stage six in Montpellier and Tony Martin underlining his time-trialling superiority with his victory at Mont-Saint-Michel on Wednesday, Germany now has five stage wins altogether on this year’s Tour, while the hosts have yet to record any. And yet the country’s success

FORMULA ONE Honda to set up racing base in Britain
TOKYO: Japanese automaker Honda said on Friday that it will build a European racing operations base in Britain ahead of its return to the Formula One scene in the year 2015. Honda had said in May that it will return to the sport as an engine supplier to British team McLaren in a bid to revive their championship-winning partnership. On Friday it said it will
build a new facility in Milton Keynes, 80 kilometres (50 miles) northwest of London, that “will rebuild and maintain the power units developed at Honda (research and development) centre” in Japan. “The UK is an ideal location; it is the home of McLaren, many F1 suppliers are UK based and with seven of the 19 races taking place in Europe (in 2013),” Honda said in a statement. Tour to the recent admission by 1997 Tour winner Jan Ullrich that he had cheated during his career, cycling’s name has been dragged through the mud in Germany in recent times. So much so that public broadcasters in the country continue to shun the chance to show live coverage of the race.
“The only thing we can do is keep on winning races. That is the best publicity you can do for your own sport,” Kittel said after his victory in Tours. “We still have to do our job and that is what we will carry on doing. Personally I am very proud of my win today. I showed I can beat the best sprinters and we as a team showed that we are one of the strongest lead-out teams,” added Kittel, who is riding for the previously unheralded Dutch outfit Argos-Shimano. Having pulled out of his debut Tour last year during the fifth stage because of a viral infection, Kittel is hoping to survive the coming Alpine stages to complete this year’s race. Thursday’s win saw him equal former German sprint star Erik Zabel’s best showing of three stage victories in a single Tour, and he could now go one better with more opportunities set to present themselves to the sprinters on Friday and on the last stage on the Champs Elysees.

BERLIN: Jorge Lorenzo (in pic) is hoping to challenge Dani Pedrosa’s three-year winning streak at the German MotoGP in the wake of the Spaniard’s heroics at the Netherlands MotoGP. Lorenzo, 26, second in the overall standings, produced a superb effort at Assen a fortnight ago to finish fifth, just 36 hours after surgery on a broken collarbone following a crash in practice. The reigning world champion is just nine points behind Honda’s Pedrosa in the standings, but having won four of the last six races on the German track, current world leader Pedrosa starts as favourite. Lorenzo has yet to win at Sachsenring and will find the anti-clockwise circuit a challenge for his recently injured shoulder, but the Mallorcan is determined to give his all. “Sachsenring is going to be a little tough for me after the crash

JOHN DEERE CLASSIC
BULL FIGHTING
Zach, Camilo share lead SILVIS: Colombia’s Camilo Villegas deployed a “chill” attitude and a hot putter to seize a share of the firstround lead Thursday at the John Deere Classic alongside defending champion Zach Johnson. Villegas, who claimed the last of his three US PGA Tour titles in 2010, has struggled through an indifferent 2013, with just two top-10 finishes in 16 starts. But he looked every inch a contender on Thursday, however, especially on the TPC Deere Run greens. His round included a stretch of five consecutive oneputts, and he opened the back nine with four birdies in five holes, nabbing the last of eight birdies at the par-five 17th. “Made some great putts and just kept out of trouble,” Villegas said. “I was very
tain took responsibility to win the match on his own in the final over. India were actually cruising along at 139 for three in the 32nd over in the best weather of the tournament. But the dismissal of Suresh Raina triggered a collapse which saw four wickets falling for 13 runs, left-arm spinner Rangana Herath turning the screws with two wickets in two balls to finish with the best figures of four for 20. Opening batsman Rohit Sharma’s top score of 58 was inevitably overshadowed by Dhoni’s heroics. Sri Lanka endured an even more calamitous collapse after they were put in at the start of the day, losing their last eight wickets for 30 runs after at one stage being promisingly poised at 171 for two in the 38th over. A 122-run second-wicket partnership between Kumar Sangakkara (71) and Lahiru Thirimanne (46) had placed their side in that excellent position. It was a nice, relaxed, chill attitude, and I enjoyed every single bit of the round.” Villegas said he’s made a concerted effort to find that enjoyment, even as his victory drought continues. “This job is great when you’re playing good,” he said. “It kicks your butt when you’re not performing. But you can kick your butt even harder when things are not going good. So I’m trying not to be that guy that kicks his butt a little bit harder, just enjoy every second of it.” Johnson had seven birdies with no bogeys to find himself back atop the
John Deere leaderboard. Johnson, of nearby Cedar Rapids, Iowa, notched his 17th straight round in the 60s on the par-71 Deere Run layout. “I have always felt comfortable here,” Johnson said. He and Villegas were one stroke in front of Matt Bettencourt, Daniel Summerhays and Zimbabwe’s Brendon de Jonge, who all carded 65s. Colonial winner Boo Weekley led a group of seven players on five-under that also included Australian Matt Jones, Canadian David Hearn, Jim Herman, Vaughn Taylor, Kevin Streelman and Robert Streb. Steve Stricker, who had his three-year winning streak in the tournament snapped by Johnson last year, was in a group of 13 players on 67 which also included South Korean K.J. Choi and US veteran Davis Love. AFP

Pamplona feasts on bull run beasts PAMPLONA: After chasing festival-goers through the cobbled streets of Pamplona, a huge black fighting bull now hangs from one leg, blood gushing out of its throat. The half-tonne beast is being drained of blood in the patio of the bullring where it was slain by a matador following the morning chase. Like all the bulls killed in the San Fermin festival in this northern Spanish city, it will soon head to a slaughterhouse to be prepared and then sold in butcher shops. “It’s very common here in Pamplona for a housewife to buy 10 kilos, 15 kilos and freeze it to eat at Christmas or on special occasions,” says one local butcher, Patxi Jimenez Arellano, 44. A former sociologist, he now stands behind the counter in the butcher’s shop founded by his father in the historic heart of Pamplona. “People experience the bull during the whole process. They look at it in the holding pen, watch it in the bull run and in the ring, and finally they eat it. It’s like closing a circle,” he says. AFP

Could this be Ashton’s Ashes?

NOTTINGHAM: Australia’s new teenage sensation Ashton Agar said he’d enjoyed the best day of his young life so far on Thursday after his recordbreaking 98 turned the first Ashes Test against England upside down. “It’s been a great day, it’s probably the best day so far in my life,” said Agar after stumps on the second day at Trent Bridge. And it certainly vindicated his decision to opt for cricket over Australian Rules football because he became tired of being “the little fat kid ... getting smashed around”. It certainly vindicated his decision to opt for cricket over Australian Rules football because he became tired of being ‘the little fat kid ... getting smashed around’. when 19-year-old Western Australia left-arm spinner Agar, making his Test debut, walked out to bat. But betraying few, if any nerves, the teenager struck a superb 98 off just 101 balls to record the highest ever score by a No 11 batsman in Test history, topping Tino Best’s 95 for the West Indies against England at Edgbaston last year. Together with Phil Hughes (81 not out), he also shared a
5 THINGS WE LEARNT ON DAY 2
1. AGAR IS NO MUG WITH THE BAT
Ashton Agar’s 98 proved that he’s got far more talent with the bat than Pattinson, Starc and Siddle. In the second innings he should be brought up the order and given a chance to play himself in. The risks minimal, rewards great.
2. ENGLAND’S BOWLERS FAILED
With Australia at 117 for 9 and debutant Agar fresh in, England’s bowlers should have attacked the stumps. Instead they tried to bounce Agar out. They bowled too short and threw Australia a lifeline, which they took.
3. SIDDLE STILL HOLDS THE KEY
Peter Siddle’s probing line outside the off to Cook and Pietersen will yield rewards. At some point Pietersen is going to have a go. The Aussies have been exemplary with line and length discipline, with Siddle leading the way. BY ANDREW JOSEF
Test record last wicket stand of 163 that took Australia to 280 all out and a 65-run first innings lead. At the close, with Agar still to take his first Test wicket, England were 80 for two in their second innings — a lead of 15. “It’s a dream come true. Forever, I’ve dreamt of playing Test cricket for Australia,” said Agar. He also thanked new Australia coach Darren Lehmann for giving him the confidence to keep faith with his natural game. Among the spectators at Trent Bridge were his parents John and Sonia and brothers William and Wesley. “They were on a plane straightaway, once they found the news out [that he had been picked to play],” said Agar. “To have them there today made that extra-special to me.”
4. KEVIN’S LEFT-ARM BLUES ARE GONE?
Pietersen is a classy player, but of late left arm spinners have been having their way with him. The way he played Agar, however, shows that he has worked on his balance and tempered his natural game very well.
5. EVEN TECHNOLOGY CAN COLLAPSE
Third umpire Marais Erasmus’s decision to give Jonathan Trott out LBW, based on inconclusive hotspot coverage proved that even with technology glaring mistakes can be made. The ICC have since apologised to England.
Kevin is the sort of batsman who likes to dominate bowlers, but when he came into bat on the second day with England teetering at 11 for 2 his focus was on occupation of the crease. Kevin showed amazing patience, especially when it came to leaving balls outside the off stump. If the sun comes out today expect Kevin to get stuck in to the bowlers.

Was Ricky Ponting’s score for Surrey in his final innings against Nottinghamshire even as the Aussie batting was crumbling at Trent Bridge on Thursday.
POSTNOON PREDICTS TRENT BRIDGE is notorious for crumbling on the 4th and 5th days of a Test, but if the sun shines bright on Day 3, we can expect the pitch to be pretty good for batting in the first two sessions at least. Australia’s four pacers (we’re including Shane Watson here) should leave pretty heavy footmarks, which Graeme Swann will be looking at closely, as will Ashton Agar. If Kevin Pietersen and Alistair Cook can see off the first few overs then expect the runs to flow. Australia need early wickets, because anything over 250 is going to be a tough chase, and their batting has been wobbly.
We’ve shown we have some fight and we’re not going to lie down and die. Hopefully the attitude of that young fellow [Agar] will go through the camp. Glenn McGrath former Aussie bowler

Jerome Ramatlhakwane of Botswana became the leading scorer in the south-

But the Likuena (Crocodiles) from Lesotho took first place thanks to a plus-two goal difference, one goal better
than Botswana. Kenya, rebuilding under Algeria-born coach Adel Amrouche, collected four points from a win, a draw and a loss, and Swaziland just one. CLUB TRANSFER
Southampton in record swoop LONDON: Southampton signed Kenya midfielder Victor Wanyama (in pic) from Scottish champions Celtic for a fee reported to be a club record £12.5 million ($18.9 million) on Thursday. Wanyama agreed a fouryear contract with the Premier League club after lengthy negotiations and his arrival is believed to have broken the previous record fee Saints paid for Bologna’s Gaston Ramirez last year.
The 22-year-old’s move surpasses the £9.5 million Spartak Moscow paid Celtic for Aiden McGeady three years ago, making Wanyama the most expensive export from Scottish football. His deal is also the largest fee ever involved in a Scottish football transfer, breaking Rangers’ long-standing record £12 million outlay for Tore Andre Flo. Wanyama had been with Celtic for two years, having
The injury, announced in a two-line statement on the club website, comes after Moyes said Rooney was in his best shape in years and spoke glowingly about his relationship with his former Everton protege. “I have met Wayne two, three, four times,” he told talkSPORT radio this week. “A lot has been said about myself and Wayne over the years but we have a really good relationship.” Moyes added: “I will say he is training great.
