HYDERABAD: Having emerged the hero of the Telangana people, the Congress party has begun to consolidate its main support base—the minorities. The party is learnt to have begun to hunt for winnable Muslim candidates so that it would walk away with maximum of the 17 Lok Sabha seats. With the party facing rout in Seemandhra, it has to ensure that it sweeps Telangna to make up any possible loss in other regions. A survey to hunt down winning horses from minority community has been launched in the state. The survey is expected to help the party high command in identifying suitable minority community candidates with mass image to be fielded in the

2014 Assembly elections. Senior Congress Leader and AICC Coordinator Mohammed Khaleequr Rehman is conducting this survey across the 10 districts of Telangana region. The survey is expected to complete in the next couple of months. task force, from the North Zone has arrested one person, Sujoy Jana, and raided his shop located at Pot Market in Secunderabad on suspicion that it was the hub of a mobile phone pornography ring. It is alleged that Jana uploaded pornographic films and images on to mobile phones for school and college students. The Task Force seized one laptop, a card reader and a memory card.

The 23-year-old accused is from West Bengal and came to the city four years ago where he worked as a goldsmith. But over the last year, police claim, he has taken to uploading pornography to supplement his income. A large cache of adult material was found on his laptop. It is alleged that he charged anywhere between `250 and `fs450 per upload. The case has been handed over to the Pot Market police Station for further investigation.

country. He said no other party had minority welfare in its heart as Congress has. Khaleequr Rehman said his party was committed to empower the Muslims as per the Rajender Sachar and Justice Ranganath Misra commissions. “The two committees have recommended the UPA government to empower minorities politically. Political empowerment is nothing but providing proportionate and suitable representation to Muslims and Minorities in political institutions like Assembly and Parliament. We are planning to implement the same in soon to be formed Telangana state by giving atleast three Loksabha and 17 assembly seats,” Rehaman said. Emphasising that the Congress party's commitment was to the poor and the downthrodden, he quoted how the

party braved powerful lobbies to carve out a state to meet the aspirations of four crore people. " In 2004 Assembly elections, we promised to Telanganites that we will give Selangana state. But in 2009 Assembly polls, we did not make any such promise. And yet, our party under the presidentship of Sonia Gandhi kept its promise of creating separate Telangana state after holding unprecdent-

ed level of deliberations with all stakeholders concerned. We will do the same to empower the minority community," he noted. The Congress is planning to take the message of empowering minorities in a huge manner among the people of the state in coming days. The survey being conducted by the party would look at the potential candidate from various angles.

Wife, lover kill husband Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com

HYDERABAD: A woman has allegedly brutally murdered her husband. The victim, Shaik Burhan, is alleged to have been killed by his wife with the help of her lover and his friends. Police claim the group tried to cover-up the murder by lodging a false complaint stating that the victim was electrocuted. But when the police investigated the matter they found that the victim had been murdered. All suspects have now been arrested. The 28-year-old victim was a native of Tangaturthy village in Nalgonda. He married the accused in 2005 and had two sons with her. They both worked as

stone-cutters. Police allege the accused was involved in an extra-marital affair. They claim that when her husband found out about it he warned her to call it off, but she didn’t. Police say that the

accused, her lover, and his friends, drugged the victim and then killed him. “It was only after intense interrogation that the victim’s wife confessed to murdering him,” said DSP P Srinivas.

Floats like a butterfly… Shekhar Ravjiani’s Telugu song #Butterfly has been making waves across social media. He talks to Postnoon about how he enjoys singing in the regional lingo. Arun Daniel arunyellamaty@postnoon.com

P

opular music director and composer Shekhar Ravjiani’s first-ever Telugu single #Butterfly is already making waves across social media just one day after its release. Shekhar was in town to launch his new song and also to announce his upcoming Royal Stag concert with Vishal on October 19 at Hitex. About his first-ever Telugu single, he says, “#Butterfly is a romantic song in Telugu which celebrates a special kind of love that’s destined to reappear in each lifetime. The song talks about a love that flutters into your heart out of nowhere, touching your soul and reminding you that you’ve felt this way before.” His song has been appreciated by T-town celebs and his fans on Twitter, who have been leaving comments on his Telugu skills and how he was spot on. “I like coming to Hyderabad, it’s a great city. I was telling someone how this city is the land of legends. Great music and films have come from this city and I couldn’t find a better place than

here to release the song and the Telugu people will enjoy the song,” he adds. When asked where he found the time to write a single while juggling his busy film schedule, he asserts, “These are my independent songs, nothing to do with my collaboration with Vishal. This is something I started two years ago. I first did a Marathi song and I then decided to do one in Telugu. Telugu is a beautiful language. The words of the song were written by Rakendu Mouli and we put it together for a song. It sounded so nice that I decided it had to be done in Telugu and featuring Chinmayi Sripaada.” “For an artist to evolve and do something new all the time is very exciting and it’s so much fun. I wanted to take up this challenge, where you do not have to follow directors and there are no deadlines. Coming out with these songs is like going on a small vacation, where I can do what I want,” he adds. Shekhar and Vishal are busy working on New Year, Bang Bang and the one-song release of Gori Tere Pyar Mein. Shekhar, however, says he will continue to work on his singles.

Ab ‘bus’ karo, cries RTC

CUTTING DOWN THE NUMBER OF BUSES THEY HAVE TO BUY.

T

he Union government has started the second round of approvals for sanctioning new special purpose vehicles to states. The Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC), constituted for the purpose, has approved nearly buses for cities in three states. According to sources, the APRTC has to procure 30 per cent high-end AC buses of the total allotment as per the condition put forward by the the Union ministry of urban development. However, there’s more to that than meets the eye. Because of severe losses that the RTC is in, the corporation has been mulling cutting down the number of buses they have to buy. The plan is to just procure 600 to 650 buses, a figure much less than the mandatory 30 per cent. As it is, the corporation has been stretched severely due to the agitations that have been raging in the Seemandhra area, which has been protesting

against the state’s bifurcation. Also, it’s become hard for the corporation to function smoothly and monitor the many routes it plies. “The condition has forced the APSRTC to scale down the

total requirement, as already the existing high-end buses playing in different cities in the state, especially in Hyderabad, the corporation has been in dire straits due to poor sponsorship; also, the corporation is in immense

losses by the Seemaandhra agitation," an official said on the condition of anonymity. "On the other hand, some routes in Hyderabad don't need additional fleet of buses, discussions are still in progress on

how to come out of the challenge since non cooperation will only lead to rejection of the proposal," sources in APSRTC told Postnoon. However, the complication before the corporation is to create SPV buses, a separate body with members from various departments like APSRTC, GHMC, transport, roads and buildings and a few others, the SPV would oversee functioning of the buses and routes. In public's view the new buses for RTC in Hyderabad are a waste of revenue. Kareem, a driver and member of RTC employees union said "people rarely use AC buses to travel, as the fares of these services are very high the existing high end buses are more enough for city". Moreover he said, "The metro train will come to the city soon after that most of the inhabitants will travel on metro trains.”

Villagers brace as dreaded Phailin moves in

Agence France-Presse

BHUBANESWAR: Tens of thousands of terrified villagers braced Saturday for the arrival of a massive cyclone bearing down on India’s east coast, packing winds of up 220 kilometres an hour (140 mph). High waves were already pounding rain-drenched beaches and trees were bent double by strong winds ahead of the arrival of Cyclone Phailin, which was expected to make landfall Saturday evening accompanied by a storm surge of up to three metres (10 feet). The storm was set to hit in the same coastal area as a devastating cyclone which struck in 1999, killing thousands of people. Authorities evacuated tens of thousands of people Friday from flimsy thatched shacks along the coasts of the states of Orissa and neighbouring

Andhra Pradesh to relief camps. Tens of thousands more were being shifted from the path of Cyclone Phailin, the Thai word for sapphire. “The first priority will be to save people’s lives, ensure food and electricity,” Orissa’s Disaster Management Minister Surya Narayan Patra said. The Orissa government said it was setting a “zero casualty target” in the densely populated state of close to 40 million people and was seeking “100 percent” evacuation of people in areas likely to be hit by the storm. The storm was bearing down on India’s east coast just as Hindus were celebrating one of the most important religious festivals of the year. “I thought we would be celebrating but now I am just worried about the storm,” a teenager said. Satellite photos showed an intimidating cloud mass barrelling across the Bay of Bengal as forecasters said the danger zone was about 150 kilometres wide and would hit coastal Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. In Orissa’s capital Bhubaneswar, where trees were swaying in strong winds, panic buying saw many shops run low on food with memories still strong of the deadly cyclone which hit the same region 14 years ago. “It’s touch-and-go whether it turns into a supercyclone,” the most powerful type of storm, India Meteorological Department director general Laxman Singh Rathore told a news conference late Friday. “The storm has high damage potential, considering the windspeed,” he added, calling the weather mass a “category 6” storm. He said the storm would be classed as a “supercyclone” if it crossed the 6.5 level. The military has been called out to help relief efforts and India’s air force said two emergency teams had been dispatched to Bhubaneswar while transport planes and helicopters were on standby.

Chemicals watchdog wins Peace prize PIERRE-HENRY DESHAYES

OSLO: The watchdog now overseeing the destruction of Syria’s chemical arsenal has won the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to rid the world of the devastating weapons. In a surprise choice on Friday, the Nobel committee honoured the UNbacked Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for “its extensive efforts” in banishing the scourge of chemical arms. “Recent events in Syria, where chemical weapons have again been put to use, have underlined the need to enhance the efforts to do away with such weapons,” the Norwegian jury said in its statement. The award came as OPCW arms experts and United Nations logistics and security personnel are on the ground in Syria and have started destroying weapons production facilities. Despite the news, it was business as usual as a second OPCW team arrived in Damascus Friday, doubling the number of inspectors there to 60. “We will celebrate the Nobel Peace Prize when our mission in Syria is successfully completed,” Jerry Smith, the Head of Field Operations for the OPCW mission in Syria, said in a statement to AFP. The wife of one of the OPCW inspectors currently in Damascus told AFP in The Hague: “I’m proud of him and the organisation. “I guess it’s a time for

celebration but he’s in Damascus so it’s not easy to celebrate.” The nearly 31-month conflict between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and rebels fighting to overthrow it has now killed 115,000 people. Under the terms of a UN Security Council resolution, Syria’s chemical arsenal must be destroyed by mid-2014. UN chief Ban Ki-moon estimated that up to 100 experts will be needed to

EDITORIALS THE FINAL Test for Sachin Sachin Tendulkar ‘The Master Blaster’, best of the best, who did marvels with the bat finally retires from the Indian cricket team. The Mumbaikar is set to retire from Tests after he plays his 200th Test, most likely in Mumbai. A legendary player with unbelievable records, 199 test matches, a double ton in ODIs and with numerous other records that are yet to be broken. Feats that no one will be able to equal or break in the foreseeable future. We witnessed some of the best innings played in cricket, from him. One of the things that stands out is that despite the amount of cricket he has played and fame he has received, he is still considered a person who has his feet firmly on the ground and this shows his humble side. He leaves behind an aspect of cricket that only he could define. With Tendulkar’s retirement, the cricket world will undoubtedly face a void which no one will ever be able to fill.

The family tree & other bonds

WHY WE LOVE... Orlando Cruz In a sport like boxing, thought a very ‘manly’ sport, the basic virtues are very important. Hard work, determination, perseverance, patience…the list is long but among the top ones should be honesty. If you are not honest with yourself and to the sport, there is no honour in donning the gloves. You need to be very honest about the work you put in, for that gives faith and hope and the scales are even, no matter how formidable the opponent is. The world of sport is yet to warm to those who are gay. Those that have come out have faced severe discrimination, which is very unworthy of the beauty and fairness paramount in sports. In such a world, Orlando Cruz, the only openly gay boxer, is honest and immensely courageous. Because he is honest about what he is and he has nothing to hide. And that gives a special edge, the edge that The Greatest had because was a man who was not afraid to share his views and was ready to go to jail for it.

Ego hardly has a role to play when the talk is about people who have experienced similar childhoods, have faced life’s battles head-on and managed to ride its ebb and flow with a calm, stoic equanimity. Soul Curry SUMAA TEKUR

M

y grandmother — dad’s mother — has 11 sisters and 1 brother. On an impromptu plan, as most such things are, they decided to pay her a visit last Saturday. They all gathered from cities near and far. Many of the sisters were meeting after several years. Yet, they bonded like they were never out of touch. They just picked up from where they left off and laughed and joked and spent a happy time over luncheon. TIME: Time had no meaning when the siblings met. It didn’t matter that there were (rather long) gaps between the sisters meeting or exchanging updates on their lives. It didn’t matter that there was much news that was new to them when they met. It didn’t even matter that they had probably missed out on important occasions – birthdays, anniver-

saries, promotions, shifting homes – that could have been great opportunities to meet. All that mattered is that they were all there together in that moment. All they wanted was to enjoy that moment. BONDS AND RELATIONSHIPS: Blood relationships are often very karmic. These bonds are built at a deep level that’s difficult for everyone to comprehend. In a house of 11 sisters and 1 brother, it is bound to be that some bonds were stronger than others, and some relationships were strengthened by running into rough weather. On the surface, it all didn’t quite show. But if one were patient enough to see how the groups disintegrated and how they became smaller groups of gossip and catching up, the patterns began to emerge. We often draw towards people of the same frequency of energy. This is at the soul level and can hardly be studied for patterns at the mind level. THE SMALL STUFF: The afternoon was about catching up. But the big news of health, finances, etc., didn’t matter as much as the smaller pleasures.

WE OFTEN DRAW TOWARDS PEOPLE OF THE SAME FREQUENCY OF ENERGY. THIS IS AT THE SOUL LEVEL AND CAN HARDLY BE STUDIED FOR PATTERNS AT THE MIND LEVEL. “Do you remember the time when you had made cabbage halwa when I visited your home 35 years ago?” “Do you remember our holiday at your place in Goa?” “Remember the time I visited you in Hyderabad? It was years ago, but do you remember at all?” ”That sweater you knit for my grandson is still his favourite.” “I still have the recipes that you shared with me. I make those dishes once in a while.” EGO: Ego hardly has a role to play when the talk is about people who have experienced similar childhoods, have faced life’s battles head-on and managed to ride its ebb and flow with a calm, stoic equanimity. Ego would only step in the way

of their growth and they know this very well. Being in the seventies and eighties, they’ve seen life and its many colours and known how to control the sails when needed and let go when needed. This experience can only come from living life, and they each respected the others for coming this far. VALUES AND THE OFFSPRING: A bunch of cousins had also gathered. They didn’t share the same bond as their parents did. They had met fewer times, only at weddings and funerals. They knew little about the other. They shared the family history but little else. They were friends on Facebook and kept in touch that way, in a rather awkward connection. But they managed to find common ground in the family connection and its deep bonds. They’re unlikely to create such strong bonds but their expectations from family are different. Fleeting Facebook friendships are enough, perhaps, to satisfy their need from family. And this makes the older generation and their relationships that much more unique.

IMF shocker! Suggests global Robin Hood policy Age of Want JEREMY TORDJMAN

T

ax the rich and better target the multinationals: The IMF has set off shockwaves this week in Washington by suggesting countries fight budget deficits by raising taxes. Tucked inside a report on public debt, the new tack was mostly eclipsed by worries about the US budget crisis, but did not escape the notice of experts and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). “We had to read it twice to be sure we had really understood it,” said Nicolas Mombrial, the head of Oxfam in Washington. “It’s rare that IMF proposals are so surprising.” Guardian of financial orthodoxy, the International Monetary Fund, which is holding its annual meetings with the World Bank this week in the US capital, typically calls for nations in difficulty to slash public spending to reduce their deficits. But in its Fiscal Monitor report, subtitled “Taxing Times”, the Fund advanced the idea of taxing the highestincome people and their assets to reinforce the legitimacy of spending cuts and fight against growing income inequalities. “Scope seems to exist in many advanced economies to

raise more revenue from the top of the income distribution,” the IMF wrote, noting “steep cuts” in top rates since the early 1980s. According to IMF estimates, taxing the rich even at the same rates during the 1980s would reap fiscal revenues equal to 0.25 per cent of economic output in the developed countries. “The gain could in some cases, such as that of the United States, be more significant,”

around 1.5 percent of gross domestic product, said the IMF report, which also singled out deficient taxation of multinational companies. In the US alone, legal loopholes deprive the Treasury of roughly $60 billion in receipts, the global lender said. The 188-nation IMF said that it did not want to enter into a debate on whether the rich should pay more taxes.

But, it said: “The chance to review international tax architecture seems to come about once a century; the fundamental issues should not be ducked.” The IMF managing director, Christine Lagarde, kept up the sales pitch for a more just fiscal policy. “It’s clearly something finance ministers are interested in, it’s something that is necessary for the right balance of

public finances,” said Lagarde, a former French finance minister, in a panel discussion Wednesday. “There are lot of wasted opportunities,” she added. After the French Socialist government’s proposal of a 75 percent tax on the wealthy was overturned by the country’s highest court last year, France’s finance minister cautiously welcomed the Fund’s new direction. “If the core idea is that fiscal policy is a policy that aims to reduce inequalities, I wouldn’t know how to protest against that,” Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said at a news conference in Washington. The minister said it was a “positive development” but he downplayed that it marked a “significant change” for the IMF. The Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development, which is leading the global battle against tax havens and tax evasion by multinationals, welcomed the IMF at its side. In the corridors, however, a quiet skirmish is underway between the two organizations for the leadership of the taxhaven offensive ordered by the Group of 20 major economies. The IMF’s Copernican revolution is still in the twilight stage. In its report, the IMF continued to push for a wider scope for value-added tax (VAT), a tax consumption tax that some say is inherently unfair, and on reductions in public spending.

Bookshops to make final stand The Paper Tigers BENOIT TOUSSAINT

E

uropean bookshops are taking a stand against competition from the Internet, boosted by a renaissance in independent stores and their enhanced know-how despite still facing a difficult climate, industry players say. “The findings are the same everywhere: it’s difficult,” Mathieu de Montchalin, president of the national trade union of French bookshops, said. “France is one of the only countries in Europe, with Germany, which is succeeding in stemming the fall in the book market,” he added after participating in an event on Europe’s book sector at the Frankfurt Book Fair. He said independent book stores were doing better than chain stores. “The independent shops are succeeding in keeping their customers and their sales are stable

even if they are not going up,” he added. The book market continues to drop off but Internet sales are increasing at a slower pace than in the past, allowing traditional book shops to limit the damage. France has 20,000 points of sale for books — and 2,500 bookshops — and the figure is not waning, according to the bookshops’ union. Meanwhile in Germany, book store sales alone rose by 0.9 percent in January to September compared to a year earlier. That was slightly more than the 0.8percent increase for all book distribution methods, according to the German Publishers and Booksellers Association. Its president Gottfried Honnefelder said although the figures were small, they showed a “trend”, with book stores projecting a “new self-confidence” in Germany. And he vigorously warned that a fixed price agreement on new books, used by Germany and 10 other European countries, must continue, not least to save the bookshops. “If this is sacrificed during the

with discounts of up to five percent on books, the maximum allowed under existing French legislation. “We look at France actually in many matters as an example,” said Juergen Boos, director of the Frankfurt fair this week. And around 100 regional independent book stores in France have grouped together to form an internet site — Leslibraires.fr — to make their collective stock of 750,000 more visible and offer a delivery service to customers. “Books Are My Bag” is a campaign, meanwhile, to promote bookshops in Britain and Ireland, launched in September by publishers, bookshops and authors. “In fact, 56 percent of all book-buying decisions are made by consumers in a bookshop and high street bookshops — both chains and independents — still account for almost 40 percent of books bought by consumers,” the campaign says. “Yet, many high street bookshops are under threat.”

G20 nations call on the US to resolve budget row soon Singling the United States out in a statement on the issues confronting global finance, representatives of the world’s most powerful economies signalled worry about the stalemate that could potentially force Washington to default on its debt. JEREMY TORDJMAN

WASHINGTON: Finance chiefs of the G20 on Friday called for Washington to quickly resolve the political paralysis over its budget and debt ceiling. Singling the United States out in a statement on the issues confronting global finance, representatives of the world’s most powerful economies signalled worry about the stalemate that could potentially force Washington to default on its debt. “The US needs to take urgent action to address short-term fiscal uncertainties,” the G20 finance ministers and central bankers — including those fromt he United States — said in a statement. Meeting in Washington, the officials warned that there were still risks to global economic growth, and that many countries faced “unacceptably high unemployment.” Asked about the G20 views of the US political stalemate, Anton Siluanov, the Russian finance minister whose country holds the presidency of the group this year, said they were mostly optimistic about the US reaching a timely solution to the problem of passing a budget and increasing the debt ceiling. “We wish for this crisis to be resolved as soon as possible,” he said in a press conference. “No one benefits from... uncertainty,” he said, speaking through a translator. “That is because it has an impact on everybody... everybody has a stake in this matter.” Earlier, in an inadvertently broadcast portion of the closed meeting of the G20 officials, Siluanov was more direct: speaking for Moscow, he urged his US counterpart to resolve the political deadlock, which threatens to force the US to default on its debt, “as quickly as possible.” At that point he expressed doubts that the White House and congressional Republicans were close to a compromise. “There doesn’t seem to be a prospect for that,” he said. The G20 group met in Washington on the sidelines of the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, where the threat to the global economy of Washington’s political paralysis overshadowed other issues.

US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid pauses as he brief the journalists following meeting with US President Barack Obama outside the West Wing AFP/JEWEL SAMAD of the White House in Washington, DC. Worries were rampant that the US Congress would not pass a budget bill to fund the government, which has been partly shut down since the beginning of the fiscal year on October 1 — or raise the country’s $16.7 trillion debt ceiling by October 17, when the government says it will run out of cash to pay its bills. “Based on what our American colleagues told us, we hope for a speedy resolution by the October 17 deadline,” Siluanov said in the press conference. A senior US Treasury official told journalists they were not opposed to the

G20 statement, underscoring that they too see the urgent need for Congress to pass a budget and raise the debt ceiling. US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew also acknowledged in a statement to the IMF’s steering committee that the US reputation as a global financial safe haven was on the line. “With the deepest and most liquid financial markets, when risk rises, the flight to safety and to quality brings investors to US markets. But the United States cannot take this hard earned reputation for granted,” he said.

Another key worry that the G20 had to address was the threat of monetary tightening — “policy normalization” — among the advanced countries as they pull away from recession. A surge in US dollar interest rates in the past six months has fired a pullout of capital from numerous emerging and smaller economies, sparking alarms and sinking their currencies. More turbulence is expected as the US Federal Reserve moves to “taper” its huge stimulus program — $85 billion a month in bond purchases — over the next year.

Toyota green-lights 86 TOKYO: An anonymous source from Toyota’s head office has told website motoring.com.au that the company has given the green light to a fourdoor version of the 86 coupé. Not much else is known about the sedan but one thing is for sure — if Toyota can get the pricing right then the practical new 86 will make for an interesting alternative to the BMW 3 series.

Saudi rejects women drivers RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s appointed advisory body has rejected a move by three female members to put the ultra-conservative kingdom’s unique ban on women driving up for discussion, state media reported. Its decision came even as activists hailed increasing reports of women getting behind the wheel in defiance of the ban ahead of a nationwide protest.

Killer drivers get their due LONDON: Killer drivers could face longer sentences as part of a review of serious motoring offences, British PM David Cameron said. The Prime Minister said the Sentencing Council had been ordered to review guidelines for offences such as causing death by dangerous driving, amid concern from the families of victims that some drivers are escaping too lightly.

Texan says bye Robert MACPHERSON

CULPEPER: There’s no mistaking the roar of the big radial engines as the most famous trainer to come out of World War II soars above this rural Virginia town. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the North American T-6 Texan, the muscular tandemseat warbird in which countless pilots in dozens of countries honed their flying skills. On Friday, some 30 Texans will set off from Culpeper, 60 miles (100 kilometers) outside Washington, and fly up the Potomac River, over the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery, to mark a unique aeronautical milestone. “There’s a lot of history in this airplane. It trained so many air forces in the world,” said Len “Stoney” Stonich of the North American Trainer Association, which represents owners, pilots and fans of the estimated 1,000 civilianowned Texans around the world. “They called it ‘the pilot-maker’ because if you can fly the T-6, you can be up in any World War II fighter and be confident you can fly the airplane,” he told AFP. Known as the SNJ in its US Navy version, and the Harvard in Canada’s air force, the Texan distinguished itself with its agile handling and aerobatic qualities as it prepared fighter pilots for combat in Europe and Asia. It remained in US military service through the Korean War in 1950-53 and into the Vietnam era — and kept flying for many other air forces for even longer, until South Africa retired its fleet in 1995. In its day, the Texan represented the cutting edge of aviation technology, a mere 35 years after the Wright brothers’ first flight on a North Carolina beach.

A MINT-CONDITION TEXAN CAN CHANGE HANDS FOR ABOUT $150,000. THAT’S ABOUT HALF THE PRICE OF A NEW FERRARI FF SPORTS CAR — BUT THIS BURNS 30 GALLONS OF AVIATION FUEL AN HOUR. More than 20,000 were built, most of them in Texas — hence the name — of which more than 500 have been restored to flying condition in the United States. With its 600 horsepower Pratt and Whitney radial engine, the Texan can fly 200 miles per hour as its pilots enjoy a commanding view of the skies above and the ground below from within a sliding glass canopy. Given how many were built, it remains the most popular of all World War II aircraft that turn heads at summer airshows all over North America, including the Culpeper Airfest this weekend that will attract 70 vintage aircraft and a estimated crowd of 10,000. It’s also starred in the movies, playing the role of Japan’s Mitsubishi Zero fighter Tora! Tora! Tora! — a 1970 dramatization of 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor that pulled the United States into the war. Today, a mint-condition Texan can change hands for about $150,000, according to the aviation classified paper Trade-a-Plane. That’s about half the price of a new Ferrari FF sports car — but seeing how it burns 30 gallons of aviation fuel an hour, at $6 a gallon, operating costs add up. “It’s a millionaire’s game,” said retired airline pilot Andy Michalak,

who owned a Texan when gas was cheaper and who still flies warbirds of all kinds for the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach, Virginia. “It’s guaranteed to make you broke and happy,” added Mike Ginter, the coordinator of Friday’s fly-by over Arlington, who got his Texan a year to the day he retired as a US Navy pilot. Commercial pilot Dan Gleason enjoys the next best thing to owning a Texan — flying the one that his employer owns, an experience he describes as deeply emotional and compelling, leavened with a powerful sense of history. “My dad trained in one in World War II, so being able, what, 60 or 70 years later, to be flying the same plane ... it’s just a fun connection, a little hard to describe,” he said. “It’s a unique privilege for any aviator.” In lieu of a Texan, Mike Dale, founder of the Culpeper Airfest, went back to his native England to find the remains of a Percival Provost — the same trainer in which he soloed as a Royal Air Force cadet as a teenager. “It was just a wreck. It had not flown in decades. There isn’t a single rivet, a single nut and bolt, in that airplane that wasn’t a part of the rebuilding,” he said, looking out at his pride and joy — one of only four still flying in the world, and the only one in America. While he sees lots of youngsters at Airfest every year, Dale — who at 78 is building a replica of a World War II Nieuport 28 biplane — mourns how aviation has lost the sense of adventure that made it so alluring in his youth. “The interest in aviation is simply not there the way it was 50 years ago, when aviation was big technology,” he said.

Known as the SNJ in its US Navy version, the T-6 Texan distinguished itself with its agile handling and aerobatic qualities as it prepared fighter pilots for combat in Europe and Asia. More than 20,000 were built.

US army is desperately seeking their Iron Man

Dan De Luce

WASHINGTON: US Army researchers are working on building hi-tech body armor that would give soldiers “superhuman strength” in a real-life version of the suit featured in “Iron Man” films. The blueprint for the “revolutionary” Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit (TALOS) would include an exoskeleton to allow a soldier to carry heavy equipment, built-in computing power, beefed up protection to stop bullets and a system to monitor vital signs, officials said. “Some of the potential technologies planned for TALOS research and development include advanced armor, situational awareness, command and control computers, power management systems, and enhanced mobility exoskeletons,” according to a US Army statement issued last month. US Special Operations Command, which oversees elite Navy SEAL and Army Ranger commandos, put out the call last month for research papers on potential technologies that a “smart” combat suit could incorporate. The request for “white papers” will extend through September 2014, and then commanders and defense officials will weigh how to proceed while taking into account growing pressures on the Pentagon budget, said spokesman Roger Teel of the Army’s Research, Development and Engineering Command, or RDECOM. The new combat armor might also employ “liquid armor,” reminiscent of the “Terminator” films, though the technology is still in an early stage of development, Teel told AFP. The liquid would transform into a solid if a magnetic or electrical charge was applied. “There is a liquid armor that they are looking at developing,” said Teel, adding that scientists at MIT were studying the idea.

“It could possibly be turned on with a battery switch” to deflect gunfire, he said. TALOS “is an advanced infantry uniform that promises to provide superhuman strength with greater ballistic protection,” according to an earlier statement from RDECOM. In a crude animated demonstration video released by the army on how the combat suit might operate, a soldier in science fiction-inspired gear stands in a doorway as bullets bounce off at close range from an unidentified enemy. While ominous music plays in the background, the words “to be continued...” flash upon the screen. The project’s acronym, TALOS, refers to the automaton of Greek mythology made of

bronze that Zeus deploys to safeguard his lover Europa. Despite previous weapons programs that came to little, officials say the technologies for the ambitious project are not out of reach, even if they sound more like the stuff of myth or movie. The concept of providing virtual displays of battlefield forces in a soldier’s helmet screen resembles similar efforts already underway for a sophisticated helmet for pilots flying the new F-35 fighter jet. Reflecting advances in robotics and computing power, the TALOS suit is part of a trend in current research focusing on what defense industry experts call “man-machine interface,” aiming to dramatically increase the capabilities of a single soldier.

Officials said the TALOS project is the brainchild of Admiral William McRaven, head of special operations command, who rose to prominence presiding over the Navy SEAL raid that killed Al-Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden. “I’m very committed to this,” McRaven told an industry conference in July. “I’d like that last operator that we lost to be the last operator we lose in this fight or the fight of the future, and I think we can get there.” As the proposed suit would draw on a range of technical disciplines, the military expects the project to be developed jointly by academia, government scientists and technology firms, officials said. Special Operations com-

mand is “interested in receiving white papers from a wide variety of sources, not just traditional military industry but also from academia, entrepreneurs and laboratories capable of providing the design, construction and testing of TALOS related technologies,” said James Geurts, acquisition executive for the command. And officials said it was too early to offer any cost estimate. Although defense officials acknowledge the project evokes comparisons to Tony Stark’s superhero suit from the “Iron Man” movies, they note that no one is claiming the smart armor will enable soldiers to soar like a plane over cities. “It’s not going to fly. It’s not going to be all that,” Teel said. “But it’s going to be special.”

T

he killing of a rare white “spirit” moose, considered to be sacred by some Canadian aboriginal groups, sparked outrage. But the hunters at the center of the controversy said they had been unaware of its significance and are trying to make amends. The animal was shot last week in Nova Scotia. It was brought to Hnatiuk’s Hunting & Fishing Ltd. in the town of Lantz, which snapped a photo of the carcass and posted it on its Facebook page. The page received 10,000 hits within three days as news of the animal’s death went viral, with online postings berating the hunters as “idiots” and “ignorant” with “no respect or com-

mon sense.” Emotions expressed on Facebook and in Twitter messages throughout the day ranged from sadness to anger. “I cannot believe anyone could kill such a beautiful creature. I guess they think they are really big men now. Shame, shame, shame,” said one post. “How can something that is so sacred and honoured by the community be a trophy?” commented a fellow hunter who described being devastated and in tears. “When something is so rare in nature, just leave it alone,” concluded another. The owner of the taxidermy shop, Jim Hnatiuk, said he spoke with the hunters: “They said,

had they known the significance of this they wouldn’t have shot the moose.” “Some people believe that shooting a white moose is bad luck, but the hunters were totally unaware of its significance,” he said by telephone. “Everyone is a lot more

The ceremony is planned for next week and could last several days. The hunters meanwhile will keep the bull moose’s head as a trophy. White moose are not legally protected, but they are very rare. Natural Resources officials said the moose was probably a partial albino, based on photographs. This particular animal was

known to have inhabited the Nova Scotia highlands for several years and had been spotted often by locals. “It was very graceful to see,” a Mi’kmaq chief told public broadcaster CBC. Mi’kmaq hunter Danny Paul added: “We are not to harm them in any way, shape, or form, because they could be one of our ancestors coming to remind us of something significant that’s going to happen within our communities.” Killing the animal, he explained, brings bad luck and misfortune. “It was so disrespectful, having seen it put on the social media,” Paul said, adding “our AFP people are outraged.”

T

he year begins with the death of a beloved king and the ascension of an enigmatic young monarch, who is deeply sensitive to the needs of the working class, glamorous and single alike. However, by the end of the year, the world would be astounded as it witnesses the new leader give up his throne in the name of love. Abduction opens on a ‘melancholy February afternoon’, introducing the readers immediately to one of the main protagonists, nineteen-year-old May Thomas. May is a chauffeuse working for the eminent Sir Philip Blunt at Cuckmere Park in Sussex and due to her position, her ‘eyes are opened to the upper echelons of British society’. Other characters are soon introduced, an overtly gregari-

ous spinster, Evangeline Nettlefold who is a childhood friend to Wallis Simpson an American socialite. Evangeline is also a goddaughter to Lady Joan Blunt and a new arrival to London from Baltimore. Elements of her character are incredibly interesting and she seems far more well thought out than the majority of the others in the novel. Young, idealistic Julian Richardson’s Oxford degree and his close friendship with Rupert Blunt have catapulted him from agonising hours in his mother’s middle-class parlour to long holidays spent at stately homes and luxurious dinners in the company of a king. Although, the plot engages from the very start, perpetual mention of May's breath taking beauty, and repeated anecdotes about Evangeline's weight, seem pedestrian after a point. Personalities are the intriguing aspect here and are shown

through speech and action. However, Nicolson adds depth to the period novel by elucidating the dysfunctional relations — Evangeline's mother was emotionally abusive throughout her childhood and May's father sexually so. Julian is disgusted with his mother's shallow covetousness of being a social climber. Thus, revealing the complexity of family bonds which is certainly one of her many strengths. Nicolson’s character sketches are well thought out and cre-

ative, such as Wallis herself is described as having ‘an unnaturally wide smile, a doll-like body, high little shoulders and a perfectly enormous head’ while the butler at Wallis Simpson’s residence is ‘cigarette-slim.’ A wide scope of period details have been included, though, the title is somewhat misleading since the book is not necessarily centred on the ‘Abdication’ of Edward VIII, but is more about the people on its periphery. By the end, protagonists May, Evangeline and Julian have become embroiled in the veiled truth of undeclared love, unspoken sympathies and covert complicities that define the year chronicled in Abdication. The book is addictive and poignant while being a story inspired by a love affair that shook the world at a time when the world was on the brink of war.

Frankfurt Book Fair explores self-publishing Authors are increasingly opting to self-publish as a way to reach readers and sidestep potentially thorny relations with a publisher, as industry players descend on the world’s biggest book fair.

A

uthors are increasingly opting to self-publish as a way to reach readers and sidestep potentially thorny relations with a publisher, industry players at the world’s biggest book fair said. “People have always wanted to tell their story. A lot of barriers have fallen thanks to the explosion of social networks and new technologies,” said Florian Geuppert of French company Books on Demand. With an annual print-run of three million books and 17,000 digital versions, his company is one of top players in the world of self-publishing, a key theme at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair in western Germany. Self-publishing, which allows an author to publish a manuscript for a traditional paper book or e-book without going through a publishing company, accounted for just three percent of France’s book market last year. In the United States however it now boasts a 17-percent share of the market after significant growth in recent years. Some writers choose to do it alone because they have been turned down by a publisher, but most simply do it because they want to stay in total control, according to Geuppert. “The main reason for selfpublishing is still the same, to do what they want, how they want

it,” he said. However self-publishing authors are not all cut from the same cloth. “There’s the little girl who wants to publish her grandmother’s recipes or the person who launches themselves with a first manuscript, but also professional authors disappointed by the marketing by traditional publishers,” said Marguerite Joly, marketing director of Epubli.

The German self-publishing platform has brought out 15,000 publications. As well as more freedom, self-publishing can offer greater financial rewards too. Depending on the form it takes, writers can hope to pocket anything from 15 to 80 percent from the sales of a self-published book, compared to up to six percent via a traditional publisher. “As soon as the book is pub-

lished, it is available on the big distribution platforms like Amazon, Google Play, the Apple store,” Joly said. Although e-books have been gaining ground, fears they would sound the death knell for their traditional paper-and-glue counterparts appear to have been laid to rest. However, at Books on Demand, digital books still only represent 10 percent of the sales

of self-published writers, who continue to prefer their works to be printed and bound. “I’m very satisfied with selfpublishing,” said Gordon Mueller-Eschenbach, a coaching expert who has written several books. He said a publishing company generally planned the release of a book one year ahead of time. “But depending on the subjects, you sometimes can’t wait. “Thanks to self-publishing, my book can be available on Amazon one month after I’ve finished it,” he said. Self-publishing is also useful in countries where dictatorships do not allow free publication, he added. “In a country where publishing is under the control of a dictatorship, self-publishing enables critical works to enter the market very quickly, available for purchase with a simple click,” he enthused. However the process is not without potential problems. Without the back-up and financing of a publishing company, writers have to deal with formatting the book themselves as well as dealing with promotion and relations with distributors. Matthieu de Montchalin, president of the French bookshops’ trade union, said there were often happy endings in selfpublishing but “also many disappointments”. AFP

Malala calls on world to make education top priority Malala Yousafzai says that a focus on education would fight child labour, child trafficking, poverty and AIDS, all at once.

M

alala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl activist who has become a world champion of girls' rights, called for the World Bank to make education its top priority. Seated on a stage with World Bank President Jim Yong Kim in a one-on-one presentation in Washington, the 16-year-old Malala delivered a poised, articulate and impassioned plea for children's education. Asked by Kim for her advice to the World Bank, Malala noted that organisations spend much of their money on health, AIDS and other programmes. "But I think all those organisations must make education their top priority," she said. Such a focus would fight child labour, child trafficking, poverty and AIDS, all at once, she argued. Kim, who has called her "a powerful symbol of hope", announced the World Bank was donating $200 million to the Malala Fund, a foundation she launched to help girls around the world go to school and promote universal access to education. Malala said that she decided to create the fund because she needed to do "work on the ground" to promote education, in addition to speaking out about the issues. She also is promoting her book, out this month — I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban, a tale of her family and life in the Swat Valley, her attack by the Taliban, her recovery and her mission to champion children's right to an education. Malala was shot in the head by the Pakistani Taliban on October 9, 2012, for speaking out against their ideology. She recalled to a packed audi-

ence at the World Bank that her father campaigned for women's rights, in a Pakistani society that favours sons. She realised when she was about 13 and 14 that the Taliban might attack her father for his support of women, and she started to prepare for an attack against herself. "If a Talib comes, he has a gun and he's going to shoot me, I will tell him, then shoot me, but listen to me first. Listen to my voice... And I will tell him that I want even education for their sons and daughters. I'm not speaking against them. I'm not against any person. I am against their ideology... Why are they against education?" RELATIONSHIPS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2013

I

I AM ALL EARS

am 28 years of age. Recently, I developed a crush on my boss who is older than me by a couple of years. I am trying hard not to let others know about my feelings. But I fear my actions will give me away soon. What should I do? I can’t stop thinking about her.

Dear Crush, Well, you don’t need to worry much. Everyone at some point of time have had the same feeling. You feel weird because it could be affecting your work, or you think the right or wrong of it. If it is just a crush it will wear off in sometime. If it is affecting your work, you could be more zealous about what you do and ask for more responsibilities. If you are sure it’s a crush, be sure it will wear away soon... So relax.

NEED FOR SPACE

It’s a natural instinct for parents to extend a protective wing over their young, be it from predators or any kind of bad influences. But how far should their protection extend to? Roshni Donny

feedback@postnoon.com

I

t’s a natural instinct for parents to extend a protective wing over their young, be it from predators or any kind of bad influences. But how far should their protection extend to? With so much happening in the world today, and evil lurking at every corner, parents assume the role of a white knight, which to a certain extent is advisable, but an overboard benefactor is a whole different ball game altogether. You can never expect your children to be independent unless you

give them an opportunity to stand on their own feet. It is only when they face the battles of life they become stronger and the years of parenting pays off. Just a week back, Sharon Osburne got into a public spew with Lady Gaga defending her daughter Kelly, when she drafted an open letter insulting her with various names. What Sharon did was completely unjustified, by getting involved in her daughter’s conflict which wasn’t hers to begin with. But she isn’t the only one, there are many par-

ents who are mindlessly following suit. Parents may think that shielding your child protects them from all the bad possible, but eventually over a period of time this only weakens their self esteem and narrows down their confidence. Elizabeth Hartley Brewer in her book titled Making Sense of your Child’s Friendship lists a few principles which if parents use as guidelines would curtail their involvement in their children’s battles. For starters, “Don’t get involved unless they are being seriously threatened.” Also a crucial point to remember is

to never to be critical about their choice of friends. Criticism of their choices lowers their defense and gets them questioning themselves. Nature provides us with perfect examples all around, for instance look at the birds. No matter what species or breed, the moment the young one flies off his nest, he is on his own. He never returns back to solicit advise from his parents on how to steer in a storm. He learns it on his own and flies into the unknown attaining experience by the minute. Similarly, your child cannot turn to you for every small clash. He has to learn to steer his way in order to create a new path of his own. As par-

ents you have to face the bitter truth that you may not always be there for your child. So his little feuds at schools or the bitter disagreement on the playground are better to be left for the children to solve amongst themselves.

GABBAR SINGH 2:

P

awan Kalyan starrer Gabbar Singh went on to become a blockbuster. Soon after that, Gabbar Singh 2 was announced. Recently reports were that Pranitha was finalised as the leading lady of the sequel. But the unit members tell that this is just a rumour and nothing much has been finalised as yet. Even the muhurtham ceremony of the film is yet to be fixed. Currently

the work on the script is going on. Powerstar Pawan Kalyan and director Sampath Nandi are giving the final touches to the script. After the super success of Attharintiki Daaredi, Pawan Kalyan is taking extra efforts to make this even more a big success. The film will have Devi Sri Prasad's music and it is to be produced by Pawan's friend Sharat Marar.

roducer Dil Raju, who considers number eleven lucky, says he likes to take certain sentiments seriously. Therefore, he is releasing Junior NTR-starrer Telugu action-drama Ramayya Vasthavayya Oct 11. “Some sentiments need to be taken seriously because they might work in your favour. I consider number eleven very lucky for me as my last film Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu (SVSC), which also released on eleventh of a different month, went on to be a blockbuster. I'm releasing Ramayya Vasthavayya on the same day for the same reason," Raju said. SVSC starring Mahesh Babu and D Venkatesh released Jan 11 this year. Other reason why Raju was keen on releasing Ramayya Vasthavayya on Friday is director Harish Shankar's last release Gabbar Singh released on May 11, 2012. "I don't think it's a coincidence. I strongly believe in this sentiment, and therefore, convinced Harish and NTR on the date. They didn't have any problem with it," he added. Earlier, Ramayya Vasthavayya was scheduled to release Thursday on the occasion of Navratri. IANS

ctor Suriya has opted out of Tamil thriller Dhruva Natchathiram, which was launched a few months back, as he felt that filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon was taking too much time to tweak the story. "I only do films if I like the story. I quite liked Gautham's story, but requested him to tweak it a little. But I waited for six months and I am still waiting. Unfortunately, my wait has ended in (vain), therefore I'm pulling out of this project," Suriya said in a statement. "This is not the first time I have shared such an experience with Gautham. In the past, we launched another film called Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikaalam. We shot for a week and then I waited for another eight months before pulling out," he added. Dhruva Natchathiram was launched in May. Menon had also cast few actors for the film and even shot a few scenes. "I can't wait any longer as I feel Gautham and I are heading in opposite directions in our ideologies. I don't think I can work together with him," Suriya said. Now, Suriya will start working on yetuntitled Linguswamy project from November onwards, while Menon is busy shooting his part for upcoming independent film X, which features Rajat Kapoor in the lead.

SUDOKU

THOUGHT OF THE DAY No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow you progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn’t trying. – Tony Robbins

KAKURO

How to play kakuro

SCRIBBLING PAD

Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Mark Webber on pole

SUZUKA, October 12, 2013 (AFP) - Mark Webber stole Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel’s thunder by snatching pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix after a masterful qualifying drive on Saturday. Championship leader Sebastian Vettel, who can capture his fourth successive Formula One world title if he wins Sunday’s race and Fernando Alonso finishes outside the top eight, will line up alongside Webber on the front row. Earlier, Webber clocked the fastest lap in Saturday’s final free practice for the Japanese Grand Prix as team-mate and runaway championship leader Sebastian Vettel watched on in a pair of jeans. Vettel, who can clinch his fourth successive Formula One world title at Suzuka on Sunday, retired early after locking up his front left wheel and immediately returned to the garage. Webber clocked one minute, 32.053 seconds to top the time sheets before the afternoon’s qualifying. Lewis Hamilton was second quickest in 1:32.187 with McLaren team-mate Nico Rosberg close behind in third. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, a distant second behind Vettel in the standings, clocked the fifth fastest lap of 1:32.800.

‘New book explains affair’ FRANKFURT: German tennis star Boris Becker said on Thursday his new autobiography was his chance to respond to those who condemned a notorious extramarital affair with a model. Becker was the subject of a tabloid frenzy after it emerged he had cheated on his pregnant wife and fathered a child in the back room of a trendy London restaurant in 1999.

than anticipated given the German’s rampaging form. “Locked up the front left,” radioed Vettel, who did not get a run on the medium tyre. “Just a little flat spot. Obviously it’s not great.” A victory in Sunday’s race,

combined with Alonso failing to make the top eight, will make Vettel only the third man to win four F1 titles in a row. After another win in South Korea last weekend, he has a massive 77point lead with only 125 up for grabs from the last five races.

‘No communication about entries’ HYDERABAD: India’s top doubles shuttler Jwala Gutta Friday said she and her partner Ashwini Ponappa have not yet received any communication from the Badminton Association of India (BAI) on whether or not they would be playing in the Denmark Open Super Series Premier starting Tuesday. The Delhi High Court had Thursday directed BAI to allow her to participate in tournaments and suspended the life ban on her. After the recommendation of life ban by BAI’s disciplinary committee for delaying an Indian Badminton League (IBL) match, Jwala’s entry was withdrawn from the Denmark Open by the BAI. However, the court directed the association to forthwith

that there was no official communication so far from BAI. “They should have told me by now. If I don’t get visa today that means I can’t play the tournament as Saturday and Sunday are holidays for the Danish embassy,” she said. Ashwini said she was disappointed as they were looking forward to making a comeback with the Denmark Open. They hoped that their entries would be sent for the French Open and Bitburger Open scheduled later this month. “We have also sent entries for China and Hong Kong next month. I hope that they will send our entries,” said Jwala. “I hope that justice will be done and Ashwini and I get to play in future. There are

important tournaments coming up next year. We are defending champions of the Commonwealth Games, which is going to happen next year. We need to play major tournaments before that,” she added. She said the BAI withdrew her from Japan Open last month without intimating her and also threw her out of the team. “Ashwini is in the Indian team but I am not which sounds really funny. Still I did not complain as long as I get to play. I booked all my tickets and hotel. I spent so much money and they withdrew my name from Denmark. I don’t know whether they withdrew our names from French and IANS Bitburger as well.”

Djokovic on course for potential Nadal showdown Nadal defeated Wawrinka to reach the semis, staying on course for a potential title match against Djokovic. John WEAVER

SHANGHAI: Rafael Nadal survived a fierce assault from Stanislas Wawrinka to reach the Shanghai Masters semi-finals Friday, staying on course for a potential title match against Novak Djokovic, who recovered from a set down to also claim victory. World number one Nadal was pushed to the limit by eighth seed Wawrinka in a highly competitive first set, but the relentless Spaniard came out on top in a gripping tie-break lasting more than 20 minutes. It was one-way traffic in the second set as he prevailed 7-6 (12/10), 6-1. Top seed Djokovic kept his side of the bargain under floodlights at the Qizhong Tennis Center, withstanding a feisty challenge from Frenchman Gael Monfils to win his quarter-final 6-7 (4/7), 6-2, 6-4. Elsewhere in last-eight action, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Juan Martin del Potro breezed through their matches in

straight sets as they hunt berths at next month’s elite World Tour Finals Nadal, 27, who has won 10 titles — including the French Open and US Open — this year, fended off three set points for Wawrinka, against whom he now boasts an 11-0 record, before taking his fourth opportunity to win the opener. A dispirited Wawrinka ran out of steam in the second set against never-say-die Nadal, who regained the number one ranking this week and is chasing a record sixth Masters title in a single season. “The match in general, first set especially, was a very, very hard one,” said Nadal. “I think I played a great set. But the court is fast. His serve was huge. “He came to the court with that determination to hit every ball by taking the ball earlier, hit the ball very quick, go for the big shots in every moment. So was very difficult to stop him. “The positive thing is when he was playing well, I was playing well, too. I was able to

resist.” Earlier, Monfils and Djokovic, 26, swapped two service breaks each before the match settled into a more regular groove, going to a tie-break won by the Frenchman when the top seed went long with a backhand. But Monfils, cutting an imposing figure in his bright orange top with a shock of dark hair, let his intensity slip at the start of the set and Djokovic immediately seized the initiative with a break. A time violation for Monfils rattled him and he became embroiled in an argument with the umpire. He was soon flat on his back receiving treatment on his abdominal muscles as the set slipped away from him. Djokovic made the crucial break in the decider before going on to seal the match after an absorbing two hours and 22 minutes. “Inexplicably I started serving quite badly, but not many unforced errors,” said Djokovic. “It happens. I mean, I was

preparing for this match as well as I prepare for every other. It’s just sometimes that you start off slowly and you’re not feeling the ball as much.” “Today was a very physical match and very intense,” he added. “Both of us, we played many rallies. I knew coming into the match that he’s going to run for every ball and he’s going to make me play an extra shot.”

Earlier, Argentine sixth seed Del Potro, fresh from winning the Japan Open, eased into the semi-finals with a routine 6-3, 6-3 win against Nicolas Almagro, the Spanish 15th seed. Del Potro, 25, just one win away from qualifying for the World Tour Finals, is wary of his semi-final match-up against Nadal, describing him as AFP “unbeatable”.

Proteas face unpredictable Pak Shahid HASHMI

ABU DHABI: World number one South Africa will hold most of the aces against an erratic and unpredictable Pakistan when the teams open a two-Test series from Monday. Graeme Smith’s Proteas have dominated the five-day format and are unbeaten in a Test series since losing to Sri Lanka in 2006. Their record against subcontinent teams is particularly impressive as they have lost only four out of their last 20 Tests against such opposition and just once in an away series. South Africa have beaten Pakistan in 11 of their 21 Tests, losing only three and drawing the remaining seven. Pakistan’s only series win came way back in 2003 on home ground. Smith’s men routed Pakistan 3-0 when the two teams met in South Africa earlier this year, exposing their rivals’ fragile batting through pacemen Dale Steyn (20 wickets) and Vernon Philander (15). Even the dusty and dry pitches of the United Arab Emirates, where Pakistan have been forced to play their home

Gazi, Robiul put team ahead CHITTAGONG: Bangladesh's ninth-wicket pair of Sohag Gazi and Robiul Islam put on an unbroken 104-run stand as the hosts grabbed the lead on the fourth day of the first Test against New Zealand on Saturday. Bangladesh, replying to New Zealand's first innings total of 469, were 491-8 at lunch, a lead of 22 runs with two wickets in hand at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium in Chittagong. Gazi, a 22-year-old off-spinner whose highest score in six previous Tests was 32, was unbeaten on a strokefilled 95 that was studded with nine boundaries and three sixes. Robiul was on 33 at the break, having surpassed his previous best of 24, as the tourists struggled to end the innings on a slow pitch that offered the bowlers no assistance. Frontline spinners Bruce Martin and Ish Sodhi both conceded over 100 runs, while seamer Doug Bracewell went for 2-91 in 23 overs. AFP

matches since the 2009 terror attack on a Sri Lankan team bus, hold no fears for the South Africans. They drew a two-Test series in the UAE in 2010 with Jacques Kallis hitting successive hundreds, AB de Villiers notching South Africa’s then highest score of 278 not out and Smith and Hashim Amla also scoring

centuries. They blunted Saeed Ajmal so well that Pakistan were forced to leave out the ace spinner after he got only three wickets in the first Test in Dubai. Smith, who returns to international cricket following an ankle injury in March, believes his side are ready for all possibilities. “We expect the wickets

to spin, we expect the worst in that regard, and know that how we handle Ajmal could be the key,” said Smith. Pakistan have also named left-arm spinners Abdur Rehman and Zulfiqar Babar, who may make his Test debut at 34, if they play three spinners. Pakistan have only won one of their last eight Tests since

Strauss wants no new row with Pietersen LONDON: Former England captain Andrew Strauss said Friday he didn’t want to become involved in a “war of words” with Kevin Pietersen over the Indian Premier League. Strauss retired last year following a series with South Africa where Pietersen was accused of sending derogatory texts regarding his then skipper to Proteas’ players. The opener had previously been a member of an England management group who found themselves opposed to star bats-

man Pietersen’s desire to spend more time playing in the lucrative Indian Premier League tournament. But in his recently published autobiography, ‘Driving

Ambition’, Strauss wrote England “run the risk of slipping behind other teams in both ODI and Twenty20 cricket if our players don’t participate (in the IPL). That led Piers Morgan, the former editor of Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper turned USbased television chat-show host who has written of his friendship with Pietersen, to tell his Twitter followers: “The cheek of Andrew Strauss (part 2) — made all that fuss re @KP24 & IPL, and now he’s not captain, says this.”

Dav Whatmore took over as coach last year and have slipped to sixth in the Test rankings after an embarrassing defeat against Zimbabwe last month. But Misbah-ul Haq’s men can take solace from their 3-0 rout of then world number one England in the UAE last year. If Pakistan wants to repeat that triumph their sloppy batting needs a huge improvement and senior players like Misbah and Younis Khan must continue taking the responsibility. Pakistan were shot out for their lowest Test score of 49 at Johannesburg in February this year and failed to dominate a novice Zimbabwe attack. Pakistan’s pre-series build up was also chaotic as they delayed announcing their squad and then named only 12 players, picking the remaining three from the tour match against South Africa which ended on Thursday. Their top-order could be easy prey for the South African pacemen — out of three openers, only Khurram Manzoor has played Tests (nine), while Ahmed Shehzad and Shan Masood have yet to play the longer version of the game. Will consider Sachin’s request: BCCI NEW DELHI: The BCCI is likely to consider Sachin Tendulkar’s wish to play his 200th and farewell Test in his home town Mumbai. Kolkata and Mumbai were the frontrunners to host Tendulkar’s farewell Test but he in a letter to the BCCI has expressed his desire to play the 200th Test in Mumbai. “We will consider Tendulkar’s request for playing the Test match in Mumbai. We will decide the venue on Tuesday when we meet to finalise the venues of the series,” BCCI vice-president IANS Rajeev Shukla said.

Oz need to win 6-1 for No.1 spot PUNE: Australia faces a tough task in unseating India as the No.1 side in the ICC ODI rankings table when the top two ranked sides meet in the sevenmatch ODI series starting here Sunday. India starts the series with 123 points, with Australia in second place with 115 points. To retain their No.1 ranking, India will have to win two or more matches in the series. However, Australia will have to win the series 6-1 or better to reclaim the top spot they last held in July 2012. In the event of a 6-1 series’ win, Australia will gain six points to move to top spot on 121 points, while India will drop to second position with 118 points,

a loss of five points. Indian spinner Ravindra Jadeja will start the series as the joint No.1 ODI bowler with West Indies’ Sunil Narine and can claim the sole spot for the first time in his career. The Australian pace duo of Clint McKay and Mitchell Johnson are the other bowlers inside the top 10. India’s Ravichandran Ashwin in 18th and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar in 20th are the other bowlers inside the top 20. The series will also feature as many as four batsmen who sit inside the top 10. They are Virat Kohli (fourth), MS Dhoni (seventh), George Bailey (ninth) and IANS Shane Watson (10th).

Germany, Belgium seal berth Germany, Belgium and Switzerland reached the World Cup finals as, defending champions Spain, Russia and Bosnia-Herzegovina all edged closer to secure a place. PARIS: Germany, Belgium and Switzerland reached the World Cup finals on Friday as England, defending champions Spain, Russia and Bosnia-Herzegovina all edged closer. Germany booked their place with a convincing 3-0 win over the Republic of Ireland to move to 25 points in Group C. Belgium beat Croatia 2-1 in Zagreb to top Group A and make the finals for the first time since 2002. Switzerland reached the finals for the third time after a 21 win over Albania assured them of top spot in Group E. The three join Italy and Netherlands who had already made sure of qualification. Goals by Sami Khedira, Andre Schuerrle and Mesut Ozil confirmed Germany’s place in Brazil next year. Sweden made sure of a play-off spot from the same group with a 2-1 win at home to Austria. “All in all, we’ve done well in qualifying. The team have done their duty with eight wins out of nine games,” said Germany coach Joachim Loew. On-loan Everton striker Romelu Lukaku scored the two first-half goals that took Belgium through. Xherdan Shaqiri and Michael Lang gave Ottmar Hitzfeld’s Switzerland victory in Tirana and an unassailable 21 points at the top of Group E. It was a win which left one famous Swiss fan over-joyed. “Switzerland made it to the World Cup, how happy am I on a scale 1-10? About a 25. Great effort and congratulations,”

tweeted tennis ace Roger Federer. Spain moved to within a point of sealing their place in Brazil with a 2-1 win over Belarus. Second-half goals from Xavi and Alvaro Negredo mean Vicente del Bosque’s men lead France by three points at the top of Group I with the world champions set to face Georgia in their final qualifier on Tuesday. Tottenham’s Andros Townsend crowned his international debut with a fine goal as England beat Montenegro 4-1. Wayne Rooney broke the deadlock early in the second half and an own goal from Branko Boskovic doubled the hosts’ lead, before Dejan Damjanovic replied for the visitors. Townsend restored England’s two-goal cushion with 11 minutes to play, driving home right-footed from 25 yards before an injury-time penalty from Daniel Sturridge completed the scoring. They lead Group H by a point from Ukraine, who beat Poland 1-0 in Kharkiv. “The job’s half-done. If we want to qualify directly, we’ll have to win against Poland on Tuesday night. It won’t be easy,” said England boss Roy Hodgson.

Russia, coached by Fabio Capello, cruised to a 4-0 win in Luxembourg to open a threepoint lead over Portugal in Group F. Alexander Samedov, Viktor Faizukin, Denis Glushakov and Alexander Kerzhakov all scored to put Russia on 21 points. Portugal were then held to a 1-1 draw by Israel who grabbed an 85th-minute leveller from Eden Ben Basat. Ricardo Costa had opened the scoring for Portugal who face Luxembourg in their final match while Russia go to Azerbaijan. Bosnia-Herzegovina saw off whipping boys Liechtenstein 4-1 with Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko scoring twice. They lead Group G on goal difference from Greece who edged Slovakia 1-0. The Netherlands swamped Hungary 8-1 in Amsterdam with Robin van Persie grabbing a hattrick. The Dutch have 25 points from nine games in Group D. Denmark’s play-off hopes suffered a blow after a late equaliser by Alberto Aquilani helped Italy secure a 2-2 draw in Copenhagen that maintained their unbeaten record in Group AFP B.

England thrash Montenegro around the penalty area in the second half and fortunately for us, we got the goals,” said Hodgson, whose side must beat Poland at home on Tuesday to secure a place in Brazil. “Perhaps the most important goal was Andros’s goal, because that restored our two-goal margin. “The job’s half-done. If we want to qualify directly, we’ll have to win against Poland on Tuesday night. It won’t be easy.” Poland’s 1-0 defeat by Ukraine earlier in the evening ended their own hopes of qualifying, but England will have to do without right-back Kyle Walker on Tuesday after he picked up a caution that will incur a suspension. Montenegro, meanwhile, must wait to make a first ever major tournament appearance, as they need Ukraine to lose at minnows San Marino in their final

game to stand any chance of going through. “Of course I’m disappointed and a bit sad about the result, but this was a huge experience for our young team and we’re looking forward to our next matches,” said visiting coach Branko Brnovic. Hodgson displayed uncharacteristic boldness with his team selection on a damp autumn night at Wembley Stadium, fielding Rooney, Sturridge and Danny Welbeck in attack and handing a debut to Townsend. The Spurs man saw plenty of the ball in the game’s early stages and

showed commendable willingness to run with it, but the hosts were initially reduced to long-range sighters. Visiting goalkeeper Vukasin Poleksic was finally called into action when he foiled Welbeck at his near post after a dogged run from Leighton Baines, before plunging to his left to repel a Steven Gerrard curler. Montenegro were missing four firstteam players, including captain Mirko Vucinic, and their only chance of note in the first half was a deflected Stevan Jovetic effort that was comfortably saved by his Manchester City team-mate Joe AFP Hart.
