SAVES CONGRESS FROM A STORMY SITUATION

If it wasn’t for the severe storm Phailin, Congress leaders would have been hopelessly entangled in a T web they wove with no thought for the fallout. With dissent brewing in Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra, the Congress seemed to be heading for a disaster of their own making, but Phailin came along and all agitation was put aside, allowing the government some breathing room. This time, when the situation of Andhra Pradesh was going out of hands of the Congress leaders, in came ‘super cyclone’ Phailin, accompanied with ear-splitting noises of media hype that proved grossly exaggerating. But for Phailin, the Congress leaders, by all indications, would have been hopelessly entangled in the T web they wove with no thoughts to the aftermath of the division of the State. ‘You can see, but you can’t touch’ ... seems to be the mantra of the Centre when it comes to involving the State Assembly on Telangana Bill. Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com

he fight of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and Samandhra to get the TBill sent to Andhra Pradesh. Assembly for endorsing may not be fruitful if indications are to be relied on. The CM and pro-untied Andhra lobbies have been insisting that the Bill ought to be sent to the Assembly but the Centre is apprehensive of a backlash as the Assembly is dominated by the other two regions and they could vote out the Bill. If this happens, the Centre will be

hugely embarrassed. Former Chief of APCCI and MLC Dharmapuri Srinivas has said the Centre would not go back on the division of the State under any circumstances. But, he is not sure the Assembly will have the privilege of voting the T bill. During his media-interface, Srinivas said the GoM set up by the Centre to look into the problems of the Seemandhra region on account of division of the State would show satisfactory solutions to their problems. Assuring the Seemandhra people that the Centre would grant a special package to the

Seemandhra region to establish a new capital for it, DS exuded confidence that only a draft bill on Telangana would be placed in the Assembly and not the resolution on Telangana. He also opined that there would be no voting on draft Bill in the Assembly. Srinivas said the Group of Ministers would elicit opinion of the people on the problems after division of the State. The integrationists are already on the move to take the T issue to the judiciary. They believe the way the central government went about dividing the state lacks the sanction of the Constitution.

With just three working days next week before the US Treasury’s October 17 deadline for raising the debt ceiling, the Senate’s Republican and Democratic leaders showed an intensifying desire to end the twoweek government shutdown and ease the threat of default. And Reid downplayed hopes of a quick fix, as the prospects of a weekend deal appeared to slip away. McConnell suggested a bipartisan offer spearheaded by moderate Republican Senator Susan Collins as a workable template for a possible deal, but Reid rejected it. Phailin makes landfall HYDERABAD: Cyclonic storm

Phailin, which crossed the south Odisha coast Saturday night, caused widespread devastation in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh, which continued to receive heavy rain Sunday. The cyclone, which brought heavy rain and strong winds with speed reaching up to 200 km an hour, left a trail of destruction in the district bordering Odisha. At least seven people were killed, according to official sources here Sunday. The district remained without electricity Sunday as a number of electricity towers were toppled by the strong winds. Communication towers were also damaged in large numbers while fallen trees on the roads cut off access to many towns and villages. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the national highway connecting Srikakulam to Odisha.

Coconut trees standing on hundreds of acres of land were uprooted while other crops were also damaged. Officials said a clear picture of the exact extent of damage would emerge only after the rain recedes. People, who spent a sleepless night Saturday, have been advised to remain indoors to safeguard themselves from the after-impact of the cyclone. Roads and railway lines were

World Bank concerned WASHINGTON: World Bank President Jim Yong Kim has expressed concern over Cyclone Phailin. “I’d like to express our concern about reports in eastern India where Cyclone Phailin has made landfall,” he said at the close of the annual meetings here. “Our thoughts go out to all those living in the cyclone’s path,” Kim said.

damaged due to the very severe cyclone, whose intensity has now come down. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system lay centred near Phulbani in Odisha. It would move northwards and weaken gradually into a cyclonic storm by noon and into a deep depression by Sunday evening. Authorities have not ruled out flood threat in Srikakulam due to heavy rains in the catchment areas of Vamsadhara and Nagavali rivers. The Met Office has forecast heavy rainfall during the next 24 hours. Kalingapatnam, Ichapuram, Kaviti, Sompeta, Palasa, Vajrapukottur and Kanthili “mandals” or blocks were worst hit by the cyclone. National Disaster Response Force teams and the district administration swung into action to provide relief in the affected areas.

COMMENT SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2013

Hats off to Phailin evacuation efforts

EDITORIALS OF CABBAGES and Kings The globular onion, king of kitchen, represents the whole of vegetable kingdom. And, it is this ‘humble but important’ veg that will set the tone to the forthcoming Assembly polls in five states. Onion has always held a special place in Indian culinary culture. There are few delicacies that can scorn at onion and yet excel. Remember how a man enraged at not serving him omelette fried the in onion stabbed the food-joint man in Hyderabad not long ago. Onion evokes so much sentiment. Now, it is clear that the government of the day, especially the Centre, has abdicated its responsibility of keeping a watch on the market mechanism of essential goods. It is not the question of onion alone, under its shadow, unscrupulous middlemen have pushed the prices of all vegetables surreptitiously. For quite long, they know there is no fear of government which is concerned with lofty ideals like GDP, growth, international affairs. Who wants to talk of the lowly subject of vegetable prices? Look how the Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and the Congress leadership are debating who is boss of market mechanism. Pawar holds that he is the lord of the field, not of the market which should fall in the purview of the civil supplies. So, after 65 years of freedom, we are debating who is what and who should take the blame for price rises! When, by some chance, this issue is solved, there would pop up another—in these days of specialisation, which of the civil supply wing should look after onion, tomato, bitter gourd, potato, cabbages etc. May be we must set up a ministry each for all vegetables. This will give a chance to a lot of power-hungry Netas to strut about as VIPs in charge of a vegetable. It will also solve unemployment to an extent.

WHY WE LOVE... political drama SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s emotional appeal to people not to punish him for the faults of the government leaves one wondering whether to cry or laugh. Its surprising that the satrap, a seasoned veteran, couldn’t come up with a better line.

From the hip SYED SHOAIB

I

t isn’t failing after all. India’s disaster management system is a topic under intense discussion in the light of Phailin. Kudos to their preparedness in the wake of the impending natural calamity, which resulted in minimising loss of human lives! Also, thanks to the multimedia channels for making weather the top headline. The recent Uttarakhand experience was obviously a lesson in learning. Comparisons to its US counterpart Katrina helped garner added alertness. Crisis linked to natural disasters in India was till date the focus. The sudden attention to preparedness deserves mention. As 80 per cent of the country is vulnerable to cyclone and other natural disasters, it is prevention that can make the big difference rather than relief work. The West Bengal government deployed disaster management in the coastal area for the cyclone that struck neighbouring Odisha last evening. Two very vulnerable states — one owing to widespread poverty, and the other embroiled as it is

in a political turmoil — have been spared massive losses. The National Disaster Management Authority even wanted fasting leaders from Andhra Pradesh to call off their strike on humanitarian grounds because of the cyclone. The human impact of natural disasters like cyclone, floods, earthquake, tsunami and volcanoes shows that early warnings is key to prevent avoidable deaths like drowning during cyclones. Tropical cyclone Bopha hit the Philippines last December, sweeping across the southern islands. Heavy winds triggered flash floods, landslides, and widespread damage to homes and farms. Six million people are estimated to have been affected, including 1,000 who died and a further 800 who went missing. In areas where communitybased disaster preparedness such as ecosystem management, early warning systems, and evacuation plans had been implemented, people were better able to protect themselves. Communities were more resilient, and losses and suffering were significantly reduced. In his research on ‘Disaster Management, Cyclone Shelters, Modernisation, Sensitising the People,’ Rajnish Kumar Singh maintains that whenever a cyclone hits the Lakshadweep islands, it leads to loss of physi-

cal and social infrastructure, which in the long run sets back the pace of development of the area. He finds it essential to keep emergency communication systems operational even under extreme conditions of cyclonic weather. The reluctance of the military junta to allow aid into Myanmar slowed down the response of aid agencies, and showed that without local capacity, humanitarian assistance is often too late. It has been years since the worst natural disaster in Myanmar’s history, cyclone Nargis struck, leaving its impact on 2.4 million people even now. Cox’s Bazar District in the Bay of Bengal, at the south-eastern corner of Bangladesh, bordering Myanmar, is particularly vulnerable to tropical cyclones that frequent the region, causing deadly storm surges and wind damage. The worst cyclone in recent years took place in 1991, resulting in 1,50,000 deaths — more than 90 per cent of whom were women and children. After this, the Community Based Disaster Preparedness Programme used a pioneering approach of community-based disaster risk reduction, by mobilising communities to become involved, equipping cyclone shelters and building people’s capacity to respond to a cyclone.

When Cyclone Sidr hit Bangladesh in November 2007, (only!) 3,300 people lost their lives. Before the cyclone hit, 5,000 community volunteers trained by the Bangladesh Red Crescent had worked through the night to alert and evacuate people. Without these efforts, thousands more would have perished. In his paper, ‘Cyclone Disaster Preparedness and Response: Experiences from the Coastal Region of Bangladesh.’ AQM Mahbub Department of Geography and Environment University of Dhaka, Bangladesh notes the following priority: Helping the poorest and the most vulnerable people to adopt and protect; facilitate international exchanges, co-operation and research activities; and strengthening philanthropic attitudes and approaches. In India, according to the latest Comptroller and Auditor General report: None of its plans have worked since the inception of the PM-led National Disaster Management Board. Probably, a paradigm shift is required in handling natural national disasters. Involving the affected community is vital and hearing them out at the beginning of every development project is inevitable. After all, the after affects of a natural disaster only broaden in the light of manmade natural degradation.

In Detroit, there’s hope amid the urban ruins

Mira OBERMAN

DETROIT: The hollow hulk of Detroit’s once majestic train station draws a steady stream of tourists to see how far Motor City has fallen. The Beaux Arts building was the tallest railway station in the world when it was built in 1913, and its 18-storey office tower once housed more than 3,000 workers. Abandoned to the elements — and to vandals — Michigan Central escaped demolition largely because the city lacked the funds for such a monumental task. “It’s kind of like the ancient pyramids — once an amazing place and now completely run down,” said Bernhardt Karg, an IT manager who was taking a group of friends visiting from Germany on a ruin tour. There are signs of life behind the razor wire fence erected to keep the vandals and squatters out. A handful of new windows fill the gaping frames and workmen come and go. So far, no formal plans for the building have been announced. The city of Detroit’s spectacular bankruptcy — the largest in US history when it was filed in July and a complex legal process expected to take years to complete — has masked a longsought revival which is gathering momentum. On a recent sunny afternoon, crews could be seen painstakingly repairing the brickwork on yet another downtown skyscraper slated to be transformed into condominiums. Posh bars and restaurants dot the streets near the Detroit Tigers baseball stadium built across from the beautifully restored Fox theater on the northern edge of downtown. A short drive up Woodward Avenue is the bustling Midtown neighborhood, where upscale shops like the expensive Whole Foods supermarket have followed the influx of young professionals seeking an urban lifestyle within walking distance of the renowned Detroit Institute of Art. Key to the revival has been

the policing provided by Wayne State University and two major hospitals, which supplement an overwhelmed Detroit police department that has an average response time of 58 minutes. “While the city will go through this [bankruptcy] transition, we fully believe it’s in the process of regenerating itself,” Shinola chief executive Steve Bock said during a tour of the chic office and assembly room on the campus of the College for Creative Studies. The 120 jobs at Shinola are nothing compared to the hundreds of thousands who were employed by the auto industry as it built Detroit into a wealthy industrial giant. But Shinola’s “hipster story” is helping to change perceptions

of a city which has for too long been synonymous with “deindustrialization, obsolescence and ruin porn,” said Robin Boyle, a professor of urban planning at Wayne State. “The real challenge is how do you connect the improvement, the investment, the incoming new residents in the midtown, downtown area to the rest of the city,” Boyle said. Outside the handful of healthy or reviving neighborhoods lies an urban wasteland housing 78,000 abandoned buildings. Many are single family homes whose wooden structures have collapsed after years or even decades of neglect as the population shrank from 1.8 million in 1950 to 685,000 today. Plenty bear the scars of

arsonists. Step inside and the detritus is puzzling. Scrappers are quick to pull out the copper wiring and metal fixtures. Yet there are often clues to a past life. Too often there are used needles and rats. Clearing out blight is a critical component to transforming Detroit into a livable city and the federal government is providing millions to help cover the cost of demolition. Yet it’s not clear how — or if — Detroit will be able to fill in the miles upon miles of empty lots or to link its few vibrant, but scattered, neighborhoods into some kind of functioning whole. A new light rail system is in the works to connect downtown and midtown. Urban farming

projects are popping up. The latest in a series of master plans for the city seem promising. A trial to determine if the city is even eligible to erase its debts in bankruptcy is scheduled to begin on October 23. There is simply no precedent for what happens next. “When we talk about what Detroit is going to look like after the bankruptcy, my answer is pretty good,” said John Pottow, a bankruptcy expert with the University of Michigan’s law school. “The main thing is they need to focus on having a credible operating budget that doesn’t have a structural deficit in it,” Pottow said in a telephone interview. “If Detroit can pay its police and teachers that bodes well.”

RABAT: The trial of three teenagers for posting Facebook photos of two of them kissing has sparked a storm of online protest in Morocco, where conservative Muslim values are being challenged in cyberspace. The offending couple, a boy and a girl aged 15 and 14, and their 15-year-old male friend who took the photos outside their school in the northern town of Nador, were arrested last week. The arrests immediately triggered a wave of online support, with activists posting pictures of couples locking lips and calling for protest “kissins”, and the judge ordered that the teens be released on bail three days later, ahead of their trial on Friday. “Social media are playing a more and more important role in monitoring both the authorities and Moroccan society, which remains deeply conservative,” said political analyst Mohammed Madani. “Activists agitating on Facebook are a potent force because they can get media attention, sometimes abroad, and can shake the conservative values both of society and the state,” he added. “As a result, the authorities review judicial decisions and sometimes challenge them, as happened in the case of the Spanish paedophile” mistakenly freed in July by King Mohamed VI. Faced with public outrage at the decision to free convicted child rapist Daniel Galvan, along with dozens of other Spanish nationals jailed in Morocco, the royal pardon was hastily revoked, with the palace insisting the king had been unaware of the nature of Galvan’s crimes. Underlining the growing power of social media, US NGO Freedom House said last week that 55 percent of the Moroccan population regularly accessed the Internet in 2012, the highest penetration rate in Africa, up from 21 percent in 2007. On the eve of Friday’s trial,

hundreds of Moroccan online activists renewed their demands that the charges against the three teenagers, of “violating public decency”, be dropped.

KISS-IN OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT In the event, the trial began and was quickly adjourned until November 22 to allow “an inquiry into the social circumstances of the teenagers”, their lawyer Monaim Fettahi said. More than two thousand people have indicated that they will attend a planned “giant kiss-in” outside parliament in Rabat on Saturday.

The Facebook link for the “kiss-in” is on https://www.facebook.com/#!/ events/209127885927276/ The accused were arrested after a Moroccan NGO filed a lawsuit late last month charg-

ing that the published photos of them kissing outside their school had a negative affect on society, “and upset people’s feelings”. The teens are being tried under Articles 483 and 484 of

the kingdom’s penal code, which relate to public indecency and indecent assault on a minor, the later carrying a possible prison sentence of five years. Morocco has a reputation for religious tolerance and personal liberty, particularly when compared with other Muslim countries. Women enjoy relatively extensive freedoms and there are plenty of bars in the main cities. But it still remains a deeply religious society. Human rights campaigners in Morocco, for the most part secular-minded young people who are active online, say society is torn between religious conservatism and the growing importance of Internet communication. “Weighed down by religion and social taboos, Moroccan society seems to be lost and divided. It has struggled to embrace a modern world characterised by the Internet and global communication,” said activist Ibtissam Lachgar. “It’s always the question of personal freedom that is at the heart of this. It’s like Moroccan society has been shaken by the Internet effect,” added Lachgar, a co-founder of the Alternative Movement for Individual Liberties. The Moroccan campaign group caused a stir in 2009 when members began boycotting the day-long fast throughout the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and were arrested for staging a picnic outside a railway station in Rabat. They have since called for the scrapping of a law criminalising Muslims for publicly flouting the Ramadan fast. But the legislation remains in force.

INTERVIEW SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2013

Hoozinc!, a lifestyle store, of artistic ingenuity and customised products proudly sits on Rd. no 12 Banjara Hills. Nikhil Kapur, one of the managing partners, talks about the company’s growth over the year and challenges they have faced.

One-stop-shop for all things quirky! the shop? Do you ever get jaded painting the popular figures over and over again? It is tough to say which ‘one’ product sells the most, but if I have to pick one, I would say the I LOVE HYD tee. It is definitely our best seller online and offline. But other than that we are always flooded with custom painting orders. Yes, we do get bored of painting the same thing again and again.

Would you say ‘customisation’ is the USP of Hoozinc!? What products are you willing to customise? Yes! Customisation is definitely our USP. We manage to make our clients very happy. Someone told us that a lot of people customise, but, no one does what we do. We give our clients the freedom to visualise and present us with a challenge. Recently, we’ve painted a wheel cap. We’ve converted an alcohol bottle into a lamp and much more. We don't limit the idea of customisation. Other than that, we are the only store in Hyderabad that sells official merchandise like bobble heads and light sabers. So, that too is undeniably our USP.

RIMA KARAN

rima.k@postnoon.com It has been over two years since the inception of Hoozinc!. How have things changed for all of you? Things here have changed drastically in terms of management. But we are still as passionate as we were when we started off.

Hoozinc! — how did the name come about? And what does it stand for? Hoozinc! Well, it means nothing. There is no story.

Over a short period, you have grown exponentially. Were funds ever a problem? Yes, funds have been a problem. It was a challenge to run a company with a limited budget and get it to the level it is today. We started off with minimum funds. Luckily, both Chandni Mathur (managing partner) and my parents have been a great support. We've managed to overcome every hurdle in our journey so far, be it administrative or financial.

Every start-up faces myriad chal-

lenges. What are those that you face every day? That's true. We have faced small, big and huge challenges. Like mentioned above, running a company in a limited budget was one of our major challenges. We still don’t have enough funds for marketing. Other than that, people management has been tough. But as the saying goes, managing people is an art. Well, we're learning on the go and there's a long way to go.

Do you plan on taking on more partners in the near future? Well, we are two partners. As of now we have no plans of adding anymore.

Where do you see Hoozinc! five years down the line? We would have expanded to different parts of India or made it really big in Hyderabad itself. Nobody can predict the future, we'll have to wait and watch.

Name a few products/ merchandise that have been included at the store lately?

What would you like to say to youngsters who wish to peruse their dream, rather than run behind an MNC job?

Other than our usual products like the bobble heads, paintings and everything that can be customised, we have note books by Made in HYD; we also have official t-shirts of TV shows and movies. We are looking at increasing our product line in the near future.

Go for it! Chase your dream, and do what you are passionate about. There is no happiness in money earned by killing yourself at work every day. But be sure to achieve satisfaction and content in doing something you love even if you do not earn a lot of bucks.

Contemporary art on show

Disarming Weapons for Music

MANSCHESTER: Imperial War Museum

LONDON: Mexican-born artist Pedro

North puts contemporary art on show. Steve McQueen, kennardphillipps and Langlands & Bell are some of artists with work on show at the Imperial War Museum North's major new exhibition in Manchester and brings together more than 40 artists that have produced work in response to conflicts since the first Gulf War.

Reyes’ latest installation, Disarm, is as endearing and whimsical as it is stark and scary. Disarm is a group of instruments constructed from pieces of dismantled weapons seized by the Mexican government. The compositions for Reyes’ robotic band were programmed in collaboration with the people at Cocolab.

Metropolitan Museum’s NEW YORK: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the nation’s premier encyclopedic museum, had no galleries devoted to the cultural achievements of Africa, Oceania, or preColumbian art. In many ways, the museum — and the art world — are still catching up to the Rockefeller vision.

New fronts open in Chinese art market as records fall Western giants are increasingly focused on China but barred from selling the hottest item — antiques — by laws aimed at protecting cultural heritage.

A

uction houses have sold $700 millionworth of artwork in recent days in Hong Kong and set a series of world records, as Asia’s art market heats up anew and competition mounts between Chinese and foreign firms. Western giants Christie’s and Sotheby’s are increasingly focused on China but barred from selling the hottest item — antiques — by laws aimed at protecting cultural heritage. Meanwhile Chinese rivals Poly and Guardian have seen tremendous growth thanks to their greater freedom to act within the country, and their political ties. And now they are seeking to challenge foreign competitors outside the mainland. So far they have been encroaching on Western art traders’ turf in Hong Kong, the former British colony turned semi-autonomous Chinese city. They held their most ambitious sales in Hong Kong so far last week, timed to capture an influx of well-heeled Chinese during a week-long national holiday. Still, Sotheby’s, which is marking its 40th year in Asia, managed to hold on to the lion’s share of the market — and the headlines — with some exceptional items. A white diamond sold for $30

million, breaking a world record; a Zeng Fanzhi painting that went for $23 million set a new record for a contemporary Chinese artist; and a gilt bronze Sakyamuni Buddha did the same for Chinese statues, selling at $30 million. The figures represent regained momentum for the Chinese art market after an unexpected contraction last year, when New York reclaimed its place from Beijing as the world’s lead city for art sales. China still led global arts and collectibles auction revenue

in 2012, according to the French Conseil des Ventes Volontaires. Auction houses have been ramping up their pursuit of China’s burgeoning millionaire class. “Their first priority is to gain direct access to the wealth of the mainland Chinese, much of which wealth is contained within the borders of the country,” said Nancy Murphy, a lawyer and expert on the Chinese art market. “Right now, the vast majority of Chinese art money is chasing only Chinese art; Western art

dealers are very, very interested in working to expand that demand, and bringing more Western art physically into China is an excellent first step.” “China is in buying mode” London-based Spink and Son, founded in 1666, recently moved its president to Hong Kong, to “further galvanise Spink’s thriving Asia business”, it said in a statement. After years of waiting, in late September Christie’s held its first auction in mainland China in the commercial hub Shanghai. Sotheby’s will hold its second in December in Beijing, with a feature piece from FrenchChinese artist Zao Wou-Ki, who died in April. But Meg Maggio, an American gallery owner with 20 years’ experience in China, believes Western firms will not flourish on the mainland — and at best they might attract more buyers to New York, London and Paris. “They have to come because what else can they do? They’ve basically lost their dominance in Hong Kong,” she said.

“I think their growth will be minimal.” She said the art market is “primarily” older items — where Chinese law gives domestic companies a huge advantage. They also benefit from important political connections. Poly Auction, the third largest house in the world, belongs to a state-owned conglomerate controlled by the army and headed by the son-inlaw of China’s former leader Deng Xiaoping. Chen Dongsheng, cofounder of Guardian, the world’s fifth largest auction firm, is married to the granddaughter of the late leader Mao Zedong. The director general of Poly Auction, Zhao Xu, has been quoted in Chinese media as saying the arrival of foreign firms did not worry him, given the legal framework. It is unclear if Beijing will ever lift the prohibitions on foreign auction houses, although Murphy expects they will gradually ease, allowing healthier competition.

Western art dealers are very, very interested in working to expand that demand, and bringing more Western art physically into China is an excellent first step. Nancy Murphy, expert on the Chinese art market Meanwhile Chinese firms trying to make inroads outside their country may enjoy swifter success. With a huge publicity drive they have sought to convince Western collectors to buy and sell through them, and Poly has opened an office in New York. “China is definitely in buying mode,” Maggio said. “The Europeans and other people are more in the selling mode.” AFP

'No bailout' for climate threat

Hudson Bay is warming up

Lines provide mixed fortunes

Governments forced to rescue the world's banking system are being warned there will be no bailout if there is a crisis in the Earth's climate system. That is the view of the head of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The OECD is to publish a paper on the most effective ways of managing carbon cuts in the economy.

The Arctic has experienced some of Earth's first and greatest effects of climate change, but the icy lowlands around Hudson Bay have remained remarkably resistant to warming — until recently. A new study reports thataquatic ecosystems in one of the Arctic's last refugia have undergone dramatic climate-driven changes and appear to have reached an ecological tipping point.

Cape vultures in southern Africa are using expanding networks of pylons and power lines to extend their range, say scientists. At the same time these lines are also contributing to this threatened bird of prey's decline through fatal collisions and electrocutions. The study involved a team of experts from the UK and South Africa tracking individual bird movements using GPS.fs

Sea level

Temperature 2007 1995-2006 rank among the 12 warmest years in the instrumental record of global surface temperature. 2013 Each of the three decades has been successively warmer at the Earth’s surface than any preceding decade since 1850.

2007 Global average sea level has risen since 1961 at an average rate of 1.8millimeters/yr and since 1993 at 3.1mm/yr. 2013 The rate of sea level rise since the mid-19th century has been larger than the mean rate during the previous two millennia.

Snow & ice 2007 Observed decreases in snow and ice extent are also consistent with warming. 2013 The Greenland and antartica ice sheets have been losing mass and glaciers have continued to shrink almost.

North Hemisphere 2007 Average northern Hemisphere temperatures during the second half of the 20th century were very highest in 1,300 years. 2013 Northern hemisphere spring snow covers have continued to decrease.

Oceans 2007 Evidence from all continents and most oceans shows that many natural systems are being affected by climate changes. 2013 The global ocean will continue to warm during the 21st century. heat will penetrate from the surface to the deep ocean circulation.

CLIMATE CHANGE REPORT

Ecosystem 2007 In terrestrial ecosystems, earlier timing of spring events and poleward and upward shifts in plant and animal ranges are with very high confidence linked to recent warming. 2013 Continued emissions of greenhouse gasses will cause further warming and changes in all components of the climate system.

2013 Vs 2007 FINDINGS

Observed changes in climate and greenhouse gases could be accounted for by human activity, according to a report by the intergovernment Panel on climate change. Observations of the climate system are based on direct measurements and remote sensing from satellites and other platforms. CHANGE IN AVERAGE SURFACE TEMPERATURE. 1986-2005 TO 2081-2100

BUTTER THE SOUL Known for her boundless ingenuity, 23-year-old Ria Girri opens up about her dream project, Cake Couture and her journey to professional success, one cupcake at a time.

s soon as you set foot in Ria Girri’s kitchen, the tempting aroma of freshfrom-the-oven bakes wraps around you like a warm blanket of nostalgia, immediately transporting you back to the days of your childhood when stealing sugar goodies meant personal victory. With a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, Ria’s says that no matter what she studied, she was sure that she would ultimately end up behind a counter, icing a cake. “After I graduated from college, I wanted to attend culinary school. I tried convincing my dad about Le Cordon Bleu which is in Paris and is a leader in gastronomy. Unfortunately, I didn’t end up going and I guess in a way that was good,” Ria explains. Since, a foreign degree seemed to blur away in the distance, Ria decided to do something on her own accord. This translated into hours of experimentation in the kitchen. “It was almost after a year of online research, self-bake videos on YouTube that I came up with my own recipes. Although my kitchen underwent a series of disasters and fiascoes as a result of my gastronomical experiments, I stumbled upon many good inventions,” exclaims Ria. Her friends and family transformed into lab rats. “I started stuffing my friend’s and family’s faces with my “kitchen accidents,” laughs Ria. After a couple of kilos gained by friends and a thousand samples later, Ria recognised the thoughtful connection between cake and life’s most meaningful events. It was only a matter of opportunity and the will to contribute to others’ precious memories with commemorative, edible centrepieces. But it felt like it was too soon to set up shop, so she decided to widen her feedback circle. “I started supplying brownies and varied

flavours of cupcakes to a friend’s food joint. Here, my goodies were not only recognised but people also dropped in their feedback,” she says. It was a couple of brainstorming sessions later that she froze on the name Cake Couture. “From then on I have been running Cake Couture single handedly from my home's kitchen. I assure you, nothing else comes with so much love! At the end of every cake’s finishing, I look at my hands and think, 'We did that!', and it feels so good!” says Ria whose choice of vibrant colours, customised fondant figures, and eye-catching detail essentially sets her cakes apart. The sincere appreciation expressed by her customers for her lovingly prepared and meticulously designed cakes, serves as priceless validation that her work is, truly serving a purpose. This helps in building a lasting relationship and creates the prospects of a lasting relationship right from a wedding to an anniversary, a baby shower, a baby’s 1st birthday, so on and so forth. “I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. I love baking and the best part is I am being paid to do what I love, and there is no better bliss than the bliss through food! In the future, I aspire to own a cafe where I can also host interactive baking sessions because I want to show people how you can fall in love with just four magic ingredients — eggs, flour, sugar and butter,” Ria smiles.

London eats up new baking craze The craze for Crodough was dreamed up earlier this year by French chef Dominique Ansel at his bakery in New York, but across the Atlantic it has taken on a life of its own.

F

irst there was the Cronut, now there’s the Dosant and the Crodough. Londoners, it seems, just can’t get enough of their doughnutcroissant crossovers. From hip east London to tea rooms, high-street cafes and sky-rise restaurants, the high-calorie hybrids are flying off the shelves like the proverbial hot cakes. The craze was dreamed up earlier this year by French chef Dominique Ansel at his bakery in New York, but across the Atlantic it has taken on a life of its own. Jennifer Rinkoff, the fourth generation of her family working in their bakery in east London, claims to have been the first to import the doughnut-croissant into Britain. She worked for three days with a 100-year-old family dough recipe to perfect what she calls a Crodough — the name ‘Cronut’ already being under US trademark protection. Made from laminated dough — flattened and folded into countless layers — it is deep fried and then filled with a choice of custard,

raspberry coulis or toffee apple crumble. “I saw on Twitter that people were asking where they could get a Cronut in London,” she told AFP, as a queue began to form in the small bakery. “So I played with the dough and by the third day it was exactly how I wanted it.” Among those eyeing up the fresh, warm Crodoughs lining the counter was student Abi, 19, who heard about the phenomenon online. “We decided to hunt them out and they are just so tasty we had to have them. It’s like a custard explosion, like donut and croissant together — what more could you want?” she said. Rinkoff started off baking just a few Crodoughs as a trial, but now sells about 200 a day. “I wanted to inject a new trend into the business. I think it’s maybe more of a craze at the moment but I don’t think it’s a fad — I want it to be the next cupcake,” she said. High-rise mash-up In London’s fast moving culinary world, the moreish

mash-up has already made its way from back-street bakery to high-rise dining. At the Duck and Waffle restaurant, located on the 40th floor of the new Heron Tower sky scraper in the City of London, a Dosant has been added to the Sunday brunch menu. More recognisably a croissant, the Dosant is deep fried, rolled in caster sugar then stuffed with Chantilly lemon custard and sprinkled with chocolate. For those who can stomach its sickly sweetness, this heart-attack-inducing pastry has the lure of exclusivity. “There were lots of

friends and bloggers and people like that who really wanted to try it but weren’t in New York,” said executive chef Daniel Doherty. “We do a limited number, first come first serve. It’s through Twitter and Facebook and things like this — it makes people feel in the know and part of something.” Hybrid treats are also sold at Bea’s of Bloomsbury alongside brightly-coloured cupcakes, another US import, made popular by the hit sitcom “Sex in the City”. There is the Townie, a tart-slash-brownie, as well

as a Duffin, a muffin-doughnut filled with fresh jam, dipped in butter and coated in sugar. “There are die-hard Duffin fans who come in for their fix every morning — and the Townie is more of an afternoon treat,” said Courtney King, manager of the Bea’s tea-room, near St Paul’s Cathedral. If final confirmation were needed that the hybrid is here to stay in Britain, Starbucks UK has introduced its own Duffin while Greggs, which has 1,600 bakeries across the country, sells a Cronut dubbed.... the AFP Greggsnut.

The shooting of the movie is going on at a brisk pace. The film was being shot at a temple in Kerala and an unfortunate incident happened on the sets. The crew of the movie were attacked by a group of RSS workers who had attacked the

director as well as the manager of Sundeep Kishan. Apparently, the unit was attacked for hiring local people to act in a Telugu film. However, Sundeep and Regina were immediately whisked away and they are safe. However, her luck changed after Gabbar Singh and since then, there has been no looking back. She had a very successful year till now with good hits to her credit. Many people were surprised with her decision to act in a guest role in Ramayya Vasthavayya. She gave a clarification on this saying “I usually choose films that offer a challenging role to me. I don’t really bother about the length of my character and that is one main reason for choosing to play a guest role in RV. The character Ammulu has been very well written and it will make a lasting impact on the audience”. Sruthi has in fact been getting rave reviews for her performance.

uch-hyped Ramayya Vasthavayya has landed safely in theatres. As the film didn't get face problems from agitators, producers of other big movies are now readying up to announce the release dates. he Delhi High Court disposed of a PIL seeking a stay on release of Akshay Kumar-starrer Boss after its producer told them that an objectionable word in a song, sung by Yo Yo Honey Singh in the film, has been muted. The decision was given by a division bench of Chief Justice NV Ramana and Justice Manmohan. “The word in the song has been muted and the Central Board of Film Certification has issued a certificate in this regard on Oct 9,” counsel for the producer told the court.

The movie is scheduled to hit screens Oct 16. The PIL was filed by a practising lawyer, Sanjay Bhatnagar, through counsel RD Rana, who asked how the song was released with such a vulgar word without Censor Board’s approval. The plea also contended that the song sung by rapper Honey Singh contained a vulgar word and the trailers are being shown on various TV channels and other media. Anurag’s next film (second) will be challenging for me as an actor,” she added. Bombay Velvet stars Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in the lead, while filmmaker Karan Johar will be seen in a negative role in it. Raveena, who was seen in Buddah Hoga Terra Baap, says she is taking on less work as she wants to focus on her family. “I am intentionally taking on less work because I am busy with my kids. I try to do a proper balance. If I take on a lot of work then I won’t be left with any time for my home,” she said. IANS

‘We’ve planned screenings for the army’

fter being denied permission to screen war comedy War Chhod Na Yaar at the Attari-Wagah border between India and Pakistan, director Faraz Haider says that the makers have planned some special screenings for the soldiers. “We will hold more screenings for the army. Everyone in the team wants them to see the film. The dates of when these will be held have not been finalised, but we will try to do it as soon as possible,” Haider said. “The permissions and legalities involved were taking a lot of time, which we did not have,” he added. The film which released Friday has been getting good reviews, the debutante director said. “We had premiere shows and many people from the industry and otherwise, were there to see the film. We have got a good response from there. But I still want to wait and see how it does. It is too soon to say anything IANS right now,” he said.

The show is based on Tom Papa’s standup piece, which follows a man who ditches his career to spend more time with his family but, after returning from spending time on the road, he realises no one pushed him into making that life-changing decision. The show will star Tom Papa and will be co-written by King of Queens Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith.

inger Robbie Williams says it’s scary being a father and he sometimes fears he isn’t up to the task. The 39-year-old admitted he worries about doing a good job of raising his 13-month-old daughter Theodora, who he had with his actress wife Ayda Field, as he is barely able to take care of himself. However, he claims his latest track Go Gentle was written as life-long vow to look after his child as best as he can, reports contactmusic.com. “Go Gentle is a promise I’m making to my daughter. It was written when she first arrived on the planet and I’d been a selfish pop star for most of my life and then all of a sudden I’ve been asked to take care of this whole person,” he said. “I still am scared that I’m not up to the task! I’m doing a good job of being dad but it’s scary, you have to look after this person for the whole of their life, I’m not very good at even looking after me,” he added. IANS

Jolie’s opening scenes in Maleficent to be re-shot A ctress Angeline Jolie’s introductory scenes in Robert Stromberg’s debut film Maleficent will be re-shot. The makers have roped in The Blind Side filmmaker John Lee Hancock to oversee the shoot. Contactmusic.com reports that producer Joe Roth told The Hollywood Reporter that it was good to have Hancock on the set of the film. “We asked (Hancock) to be on set. He’s not directing. He wrote pages and I hired a first-time director and it’s good to have him on set,” he said. The actress plays the sleeping beauty’s evil nemesis in the upcoming project, which will tell the Sleeping Beauty tale from the perspective of the villainous Maleficent. IANS

Miley P

The former Hannah Montana star began dating Hemsworth after they met on the set of The Last Song in 2009 and got engaged in June last year, but they announced last month that the romance is over, reports contactmusic.com. Cyrus has kept largely quiet about the split but she spoke about it during an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and told the host: “It’s not really as awkward (as it seems) because I’m living it. So, I think people spend more time actually thinking about it than I really do.”

The 27-year-old paid a trip to Brazilian tattoo artist Daniel Tucci during her recent trip to Rio De Janeiro where she opted to get the word “Rio” etched onto the nape of her neck. In a picture posted on micro-blogging site Twitter, Gaga is seen scrapping up her shaved hairstyle onto the top of her head to reveal the inking, which a fan had designed for her, reports contact-

Daniel, who owns King Seven Tattoo parlour in Copacabana, said: “Gaga came to me and said she wanted a tattoo that looked like something done in a prison — edgy, grey, I suppose a bit scary.” “She wanted a design that a fan had given her, the word ‘Rio’ where the letter ‘I’ was the Christ. She told me she wanted it to look like a prison tattoo, not a nice design, a bit shadowy. ‘Like something done in prison,’ was the term she used,” Daniel added. IANS

MOSCOW: Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte smashed the women’s 100 metres breaststroke short-course world record on Saturday, one of two new marks set at a World Cup meeting in Moscow. The 16-year-old Meilutyte clocked 1min 02.36sec to easily break the previous best of 1:02.70 set by American Rebecca Soni at Manchester in December 2009. “I didn’t expect to set any records,” said the Lithuanian teenager who finished 1.17sec ahead of Russian Yulia Efimova, with Jamaican Alia Shanee Atkinson in third (1:04.64). “I started practising seriously just three weeks ago and I’m still far from my top form. “But every meeting with Efimova forces me to stay completely focused. I love to compete with her as it brings out the best of me over the distance. Today’s record is the best proof of it.” Russia’s team number one (Sergei Makov, Andrey Grechin, Daria Tcvetkova and Ekaterina Borovikova) also set a new world record in the mixed 4x50m medley relay with a time of 1:41.70sec. 2012 World Cup winner Katinka Hosszu of Hungary,

Sarah Sjoestroem of Sweden was also on song winning three events (50m and 200m freestyles and 100m butterfly) in Moscow’s Olympic swimming pool. Jeremy Lin’s legacy Lin, whose parents are Taiwanese, has become a sporting hero on the island since he shot to stardom in the NBA. TAIPEI: Asian-American NBA star Jeremy Lin’s success was hailed as a “true milestone” by the league’s boss on Saturday, as the player visited Taiwan with the Houston Rockets amid much fanfare for a pre-season game. “Jeremy Lin is a true milestone for us,” NBA commissioner David Stern told a press conference in Taipei. “I think he alone is going to have enormous impact on more and more Asian youngsters playing basketball with the view that if they sacrifice, work hard and become teammates, they can move to a higher level,” Stern said. As the first American-born player of Asian descent in the NBA, he added, Lin “has been adopted by all countries in Asia as their very own”. “Eventually there will be more Asian players playing professional basketball in the NBA and that’s the legacy that’s going to come from Jeremy Lin’s suc-

cess.” Lin, whose parents are Taiwanese, has become a sporting hero on the island since he shot to stardom in the NBA with the New York Knicks early last year, sparking a global following known as “Linsanity”. He was later traded to Houston. “Taiwan has always been a very special place for me, you know for me to be here, to play a game here, it’s unbelievable,” Lin said on Saturday. “It never ceases to amaze me every time I come back how much support I get.” Among those watching Sunday’s game in Taipei will be Chinese basketball icon Yao Ming, a former Rockets centre. Besides point guard Lin, the Rockets squad includes All-Star players Dwight Howard and James Harden, while the Indiana Pacers roster features Danny Granger and All-Stars Paul George, Roy Hibbert, and David West.

The 21-year-old, who beat Michael Phelps in the event at last year’s London Olympics, clocked a time of 1:49.83 to finish more than 2sec ahead of American Tom Shields. Le Clos finished second in the 50m butterfly won in 22.36sec by compatriot Roland Schoeman, who also won the 50m breaststroke (25.83). The local crowd’s favourite Vladimir Morozov, who is currently second in the World Cup overall standings, finished first in the men’s 100m freestyle with a time of 45.68sec.

Afghan heroes return to adoring nation The cricket team was met by an official reception at Kabul airport before being driven through the war-battered city for a jubilant evening of speeches, dancing and live music. USMAN SHARIFI

KABUL: Afghanistan’s cricket team received a heroes’ welcome on Saturday as cheering crowds lined the streets and packed a stadium in Kabul to greet the players after they qualified for the 2015 World Cup. The team was met by an official reception at Kabul airport before being driven through the war-battered city for a jubilant evening of speeches, dancing and live music. Cricket only became popular in Afghanistan as refugees flooded back from Pakistan after the fall of the harsh Taliban regime in 2001. The team’s ascent to the top international level is seen as a symbol of hope and national unity. “We know the roads to Kabul are insecure, but I couldn’t resist risking it to come for this,” Mohammadullah, 28, from the eastern province of Paktia, told AFP. “Me and my friends rented two cars and hit the road to welcome our team back. Cricket is a sport which can bring all Afghans together.” Security was high for the players’ vehicle convoy and at the national cricket stadium, where the team was met by wild cheers from fans who had waited for hours to see their returning heroes. “I have never been this happy in my life,” team captain Mohammad Nabi told the crowd. “I feel proud and want to congratulate the Afghan nation for the victory and the

historic achievement.” Like many of his teammates, Nabi, 28, learned cricket in a refugee camp in Pakistan after his parents fled Afghanistan in the wake of the 1979 Soviet invasion. He hit the winning runs when Afghanistan beat Kenya by seven wickets in Sharjah a week ago to secure a place in the 2015 World Cup, which will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand. The stadium in Kabul was filled to capacity with cheerful fans waving national flags as the players showed off a golden cup marking their success. An array of pop and traditional singers then took to the stage to entertain the happy

throng. “This achievement tells us that we will be victorious in the future. It will inspire all Afghans,” Afghanistan cricket board chief Noor Mohammad Murad told AFP. Afghanistan celebrated another major sporting success only last month when the national football side won its first ever title, beating India in Nepal to lift the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) trophy. That victory was marked by long bursts of gunfire unleashed into the night sky in Kabul and elsewhere, though there was no immediate repeat of such celebrations on Saturday.

Police were on high alert for the homecoming party as Taliban suicide bombers have struck at several high-profile targets in the capital this year, including the presidential palace, the Supreme Court and the airport. Among those celebrating on Saturday was Alina Barekzai, 17, a member of the women’s national cricket team. “I am so much excited to see them go to the World Cup, now I hope the government will also pay attention to women’s cricket here,” she said. Afghanistan is drawn in the same group as four-time champions Australia, New Zealand, England, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and one other qualifier.

ABU DHABI: Cricket’s governing body launched the World Test Championship 2017 on Saturday aimed at preserving the primacy of the longer format of the game. The ICC said the inaugural championship will be hosted by England and will feature the top four teams in the ICC Test rankings, with a total prize money of $10 million at stake. championship is to preserve the primacy of Tests and to preserve the future of all formats of the game,” ICC chief executive David Richardson said at the launch on the sidelines of the Pakistan-South Africa two-Test series starting on Monday. The championship, origi-

nally planned for 2013 but delayed because broadcasters wanted a limited overs event, will replace the Champions Trophy. The attractions of Test cricket have faced serious competition in recent years from the Twenty20 phenomenon. Richardson, a former South African wicket-

keeper/batsman, said the qualifying phase for the Test championship runs from May 2013 and will end in December 2016. “The qualification pathway for the ICC World Test Championship will be through the ICC Test team rankings and the top four teams at the conclusion of the qualification period will qualify for the event in 2017.” South Africa captain Graeme Smith said: “It’s fantastic to have a pathway clearly identified for the ICC World Test Championship.”

Koepka stays in front of the pack SAN MARTIN: Brooks Koepka

fired a four-under 67 on Saturday to take his lead to two strokes after three rounds of the Frys.com Open, where he’s seeking a first US PGA Tour title. The 23-year-old, who has European Tour status after winning three times this year on Europe’s Challenge Tour developmental circuit, had six birdies and two bogeys to build a 54-hole total of 15-under 198, two strokes in front of George McNeill and Jason Kokrak. Kokrak carded a 68 while McNeill climbed the leaderboard with a course-record equaling nine-under par 62 for 200. Jimmy Walker also notched a 62 at CordeValle Golf Club, and was in a group on 201 alongside former world number one and three-time major champion Vijay Singh of Fiji and American Robert Garrigus. Singh posted a 65, while Garrigus carded a 68. While Koepka’s success on the Challenge Tour has earned his playing privileges on the European Tour, the Floridian could earn US PGA Tour status with a win on Sunday. The $5 million tournament is this year the first event in the US Tour’s new-style 2013-2014 season, with FedEx Cup playoff points on offer and a Masters berth for the winner.

Jamieson misses out on magic 59 LISBON: Scott Jamieson missed out on the first 59 on the European Tour on Saturday when his chip to the final hole in the Portugal Masters third round just slipped past. The 29-year-old Scottish player hit 11 birdies in the first 17 holes and needed another on the last to break 60 but a chip from 15 feet grazed the edge of the hole before he had to putt for a par. Jamieson had shot a round of 57 before winning his first title at the Nelson Mandela Championship in South Africa last December, but that was in a tournament cut to 36 holes on a course reduced to a par 65 because of wet fairways. “I said to Richard (his caddie) playing 17 I really want to make a birdie here so we have a chance of it going down the last and I could not have asked to hit a better shot in,” he said. “It pitched just short of the hole.” It was the 18th round of 60 in European Tour history and the second this season after Peter Uihlein’s 12 under round during the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. England’s Paul Waring, seeking his first title, leads in Portugal by two shots after carding a 67 for a 16 under.

Nadal tips Potro for Grand Slam glory

Potro prevailed 6-2, 6-4 against the Spaniard in a devastating display of power hitting to set up a final against Novak Djokovic. John WEAVER

SHANGHAI: World number one Rafael Nadal has tipped Juan Martin del Potro for more Grand Slam glory after he was handed a tennis lesson by the Argentine in their Shanghai Masters semifinal on Saturday. The 25-year-old prevailed 6-2, 6-4 against the shell-shocked Spaniard in a devastating display of power hitting to set up a final against top seed Novak Djokovic. And Nadal, who returned to the top of the rankings this week after a stunning season, said if Del Potro could repeat the form he showed in their Shanghai battle, he could smash the monopoly of the “Big Four” on the majors. The giant Argentine, who beat Federer in the 2009 US Open final, is the only player since 2005 to win a Grand Slam aside from Nadal, Federer, Djokovic and Andy Murray, but he has not reached another final since. “If he plays similar to this level, for sure he’s one of the biggest candidates to win a Grand Slam tournament. He’s able to do it. I’m sure he will win more,” said Nadal, who has won 13 major titles, just four behind Federer’s record of 17. “It is true that the last three years he played well, but he didn’t arrive to this level. So it is great to see him play again at this very, very high level. At the

end it is good to have players who have the potential to play at this unbelievable level.” Del Potro himself, who qualified for next month’s World Tour Finals in London with his victory, said to improve from his current ranking of number five would be tough. “Not many players have the chance to beat them (the top players),” he said. “I always believe in myself. I always believe in my game. It could be my biggest challenge of my career, getting closer to the top positions. “But also I am very clear they are playing so solid for a year, and I played good tournaments. I think there is the difference between the top guys and me or the rest of the players. “I have to be playing at this level for many, many tournaments in a row, or in important tournaments.” Nadal himself has had a sensational year, winning 10 titles including the French Open and US Open after seven months out with a left knee injury. The Spaniard was sanguine about his sobering defeat, admitting he had lost to the better player on the day. “Today was one of these days,” said the 27-year-old. “The positive thing is I fought during the whole match with the right attitude, in my opinion. If he went down a little bit, I was going to be there fighting for the match.”

Tsonga starts as top seed The Frenchman will test the fragile knee which kept him off the courts for nearly three months as he competes in the Austrian Open.

VIENNA: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga wasted little time in catching a flight out of Shanghai after losing a weekend semi-final to Novak Djokovic, insuring that he will make his start as top seed at this week’s Austrian Open beginning Monday. The Frenchman will test the fragile knee which kept him off the courts for nearly three months from Wimbledon until September as he competes in a demanding fourth event in the last five weeks. “I missed the game, it was tough to see my friends playing,” said the Frenchman of his enforced absence. “But it can be good because it makes your mind clear, you come back sometimes stronger. That’s what I will try to do.” Tsonga, second seed Tommy Haas, number three Italian Fabio Fognini and Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber, seeded fourth, all receive opening-round byes indoors at the Stadthalle. Tsonga won the title in 2011, his only previous appearance in the Austrian capital. Defending champion Juan Martin del Potro is not competing at this edition. Haas is also playing after injury problems, with the 35-year-old German withdrawing in the Shanghai Masters last week with back pains prior to his third-round match with Del Potro. The week will be crucial as the race to the eight-man season championships next month heats up with three weeks of qualifying play remaining.

Federer splits with coach as form dips Roger Federer, now at seven in the rankings, revealed that he was calling time on his relationship with Paul Annacone, who guided Pete Sampras during the American’s glory years. PARIS: Roger Federer split with coach Paul Annacone on Saturday as the 17-time Grand Slam title winner attempted to pull his career out of its worrying tailspin. Former world number one Federer, now at seven in the rankings, revealed that he was calling time on his relationship with Annacone, who guided Pete Sampras during the American’s glory years. “After a terrific three and a half years working together, Paul and I have decided to move on to the next chapter in our professional lives,” Federer wrote on www.rogerfederer.com. “When we started together we had a vision of a three-year

ANNACONE STARTED WORKING WITH FEDERER IN 2010, AND TOOK THE SWISS STAR TO A SEVENTH WIMBLEDON TITLE IN 2012, HIS MOST RECENT MAJOR TITLE. plan to win another Grand Slam title and get back to the number one ranking. “Along with many other goals and great memories, these two main goals were achieved. “After numerous conversations culminating at the end of

our most recent training block, we felt like this was the best time and path for both of us. “Paul remains a dear friend, and we both look forward to continuing our friendship. I want to thank Paul for his help and the value he has added to me and my team.” Annacone started working with Federer in August, 2010, and the American took the Swiss star to a seventh Wimbledon title in 2012, his most recent major title. Federer’s announcement comes just two days after he lost in the third round at the Shanghai Masters to Gael Monfils. That was his first tournament since losing in the fourth

round of the US Open. Earlier this year, Federer saw his incredible record of 36 consecutive Grand Slam quarter-finals ended abruptly in the second round at Wimbledon where he was beaten by Sergiy Stakhovsky, who was 116 in the world at the time. Federer, who has carried a back injury for most of the year, has won just one title in 2013 and is in danger of missing out on next month’s eightman, end-of-season World Tour Finals, which he has won a record six times. But the man who has spent a record total of 302 weeks at world number one insisted in Shanghai that he could turn his career around.

Confident Lampard looks to Brazil England head into the game against Poland top of European qualifying zone Group H following Friday’s 4-1 win over Montenegro at Wembley. LONDON: Frank Lampard is confident England will keep their composure against Poland at Wembley on Tuesday and secure a place at next year’s World Cup finals. Neymar slams ‘rough’ Koreans

SEOUL: Brazil star Neymar weathered some harsh attention before scoring a stunning freekick as he led the World Cup hosts to a 2-0 friendly win over South Korea on Saturday. The Barcelona forward curled his shot past Korean goalie Jung Sung-Ryong just before half-time, with Chelsea’s Oscar getting the visitors’ second shortly after the break. Neymar, 21, had been in doubt for the game after a heavy fall in training, and he was hit with some tough challenges and constant close marking in front of a near-capacity crowd. But the young idol had the last laugh at Seoul World Cup Stadium when he thumped his strike over the wall and to the right of Jung, who got a hand to the ball but could not keep it out. Neymar was targeted from start to finish as Hong MyungBo’s team, already qualified for next year’s World Cup, opted for tactics of harassment and frustration. The Brazilian threw up his hands in exasperation and had a few testy moments with other players, even getting into a shoving match near the team benches late in the first half. “I think we simply played football, whereas South Korea tried too hard,” said Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. “In the first half, they had twice as many fouls as we had. I think they were fouling too much early on.” Hong Myung-Bo defended his players’ physical play, saying they “played it fair and didn’t lose their cool.” “Some of our players are still young and I think they will learn from this experience,” said Hong, who has just one victory in seven matches since taking over in June. “I am sure they gained confidence from this, and it’s an important part of our team.”

Poland, assuming closest group rivals Ukraine, as widely forecast, defeat minnows San Marino. Poland themselves can no longer qualify but Lampard knows from painful experience there is no such thing as an England international at Wembley where the opposition have ‘nothing to play for’. It was a similar story in November 2007 when Croatia

arrived with only their pride at stake. However, the visitors’ 3-2 win denied England a place at Euro 2008 and the result also ended Steve McClaren’s reign as England manager, with the now Derby County boss dubbed the ‘wally in the brolly’ after sheltering under an umbrella during a rainsoaked night in north London. “I try not to think about

Ivorians on the brink of berth

OHANNESBURGL Didier Drogba scored as Ivory Coast overcame Senegal 3-1 in Abidjan Saturday to boost hopes of a third consecutive World Cup appearance. The 35-year-old striker converted a penalty after five minutes at Stade Felix HouphouetBoigny, Lamine Sane conceded an own goal and Salomon Kalou netted soon after halftime. But Papiss Cisse pulled one goal back six minutes into stoppage time after the ball slipped from the grasp of goalkeeper Boubacar Barry. Aristide Bance converted a disputed late penalty to give Burkina Faso a 3-2 win over Algeria in Ouagadougou in another Africa zone play-off first leg. Crowd violence when Senegal hosted Ivory Coast last year in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier led to a oneyear ban on matches in Dakar. So on top of trying to wipe out a two-goal deficit, the Senegalese must play the November 16 second leg in Moroccan city Casablanca. Turkey-based Drogba put the Ivorians ahead after Cheikhou Kouyate fouled Gervinho, whose cross nine minutes later was turned into his own net by Sane. Roma wide man Gervinho was also involved in the third goal, sending Kalou through the middle to beat Bouna Coundoul at his near post.

Bance snatched the winner after Essaid Belkalem appeared to have his arms behind his body when the ball struck him four minutes from time. But a Zambian assistant referee insisted it was a handball and Bance made up for having an earlier spot-kick saved. The home team suffered a blow when defender Bakary Kone was forced to come off with a thigh injury on seven minutes and Steeve Yago came off the bench. Algeria settled quicker and mounted numerous attacks without seriously threatening to score at a near-full 40,000seat Stade du 4 Aout. Burkina Faso seemed nervous with one corner so overhit by captain Charles Kabore that it went out of play on the far touchline.

But as the opening half passed the half hour, 2013 Africa Cup of Nations star Jonathan Pitroipa began to stamp his authority on a game needing a lift. He won a penalty as the first half drew to a close when Belkalem from English secondtier club Watford floored him with a wild tackle. But Adi Mbolhi, who appeared to move off his line too soon, dived left to make a two-hand save from a hard Bance kick. However, the Burkinabe did take the lead two minutes into stoppage time. Algeria began the second half strongly and were level on 50 minutes. The cagey early play had given way to more adventurous football from both teams and Burkina Faso and Algeria scored again within five minutes.

that night too much,” Chelsea favourite Lampard, who scored against Croatia, said following the win over Montenegro. In June, England held Brazil to a 2-2 draw in a friendly international at Rio’s iconic Maracana Stadium and Lampard, who will be 36 by the time of next year’s World Cup, would love nothing more than to play there again.

Real deny Bale needs back surgery MADRID: Real Madrid strongly denied a report in Spain on Saturday that world record signing Gareth Bale has a slipped disc. Madrid sports daily Marca published the story claiming that the problem had been identified when the 24-year-old Welshman underwent his medical with the club and that the player may need to undergo surgery. The club flatly denied those claims and although they admitted that Bale does have a slight disc protrusion, the condition will not affect him from playing. “The information published, claiming that the player has a slipped disc on the L5-S1 vertebrae and a bulge on two others, is completely false,” said a statement on the club’s website. “The player Gareth Bale has a small chronic disc bulge, which is extremely common among football players and by no means prevents him from carrying out his professional activity normally.” Bale has only been involved in three games for Madrid since sealing his move from Tottenham Hotspur at the start of September due to a series of niggling muscular injuries. Those problems have been put down to his lack of a proper pre-season as he trained very little with Spurs as his protracted move dragged on. Bale has stayed in the Spanish capital over the past week rather than representing Wales in their final two World Cup qualifiers to undergo a specific training programme to get him up to speed. And it is hoped he will make his return against Malaga at the Santiago Bernabeu next Saturday ahead of crucial matches for Carlo Ancelotti’s men against Juventus and Barcelona later this month.
