BIG BREAK 3 AISFM students get a break in Tollywood
In a recent development, two police officers of Ranga Reddy district are facing the judicial ire for ‘insulting’ the court. MOHD SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com ARUN D YELLAMATY arunyellamaty@postnoon .com
HYDERABAD: A magisterial court of Ranga Reddy district is miffed that a sub-inspector who as investigating officer is supposed to be present when suspects are arraigned and produced before court ignored the convention and repeatedly brushed aside the court warning against its summons. Finally, the other day the court sent a non-bailable warrant against the SI, Shanker Reddy.
A Ranga Reddy court has issued show cause notice against Assistant Commissioner of Police Alwal for ‘insulting’ judiciary using some unprintable words.
HYDERABAD: It’s a dream come true for Kaushal Sharma, Srikar Chittarbu and Krishna Yadavin who now will feature in MANAM is Telugu industry’s most eagerly awaited film in which three generations stars Akkineni Nageshwara Rao, Akkineni Nagarjuna and Naga Chaitanya working together for the first time. While they were always passionate about acting, the newcomers came from very different backgrounds. Srikar completed his LLB and worked as a junior advocate before enrolling at AISFM. Kaushal studied mechanical engineering before taking the plunge with acting training. Krishna had already tried out a short acting course and acted in short films. Then he thought that the AISFM course and its detailed curriculum would help him. A visibly excited Kaushal who got this big break to be part of this wonderful film remembers fondly, “My acting course covered both acting for theatre and for the camera. Training in both these fields
really helped me to enhance my abilities.” Srikar who too is thrilled to get this break to work with the film industry stalwarts warmly recalls, “AISFM was just awe-inspiring. There I learnt the technique of watching films in a nuanced manner. The interactions with other artistes and filmmakers and an international student representation changed from my perspective towards life.” AROUND THE

Speaking on introducing the students in the film, Actor Nagarjuna, said, “I am really proud to announce the names of 3 students from AISFM who gets to be part of this milestone Telugu Cinema. These young talents deserved a place in the film. They have applied themselves throughout the six-month training course learning the intricacies of acting, dance, diction as well as grooming. They also studied audition skills which helped them to win these roles. Going forward I am confident the school will roll out new talents in every sphere of film making.”
nobody knew. At the next hearing too the SI was absent and the court issued a warning to him to be present at the next time case came up. But this time too he was absent. Angry at the continued ignoring of the judiciary, the court issued a non-bailable war-
rant. Now, since the NBW was issued, the SI is said to have used some expletives against the magistrate. In another similar incident, a Ranga Reddy court has issued show cause notice against Assistant Commissioner of Police Alwal for ‘insulting’ judiciary using some unprintable words. The notice is returnable by September 29. These together has created a flutter among the law keepers.

SCHOOL CHILDREN AT RISK
Pedestrians endangered Removal of foot over bridges has worsened the misery of pedestrians who are already short-changed in our traffic system. ALEENA ALICE aleena.t@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: There are hardly any more footpaths left on the city roads; but whatever is left is available for everything except walking. Footpaths are gladly and madly used by push-cart vendors criers, squatters, beggars and urban idlers. Changes being made in the name of infrastructure development calls for removal of Foot over Bridges (FOBs). These FoBs for sure had been urban monsters which are not pedestrian friendly but they still presented an alternative to those who bear the burden of climbing up 150 steps if for nothing else for safety. Out of all the six places that have been affected because of the removal of the FoB, the most affected are Khairatabad junction, St. Ann’s High School (Secunderabad), and the one in Ameerpet near Chermas. With the removal of FoB the situation is worse for those who are unable to perform circus in the busy junctions. It is becoming a fearfully tiresome job to cross roads, pedestrians complain. With no alternative arrangements for the removed FoBs, the risk of people getting knocked down by speeding vehicles has increased. Added to it with the maddening traffic, pedestrians complain of how it takes them more than 20 minutes to cross the road now. “I have to wait everyday for nearly 15-20 minutes to cross the road from Khairatabad bus stop to reach my office on the other side of the road. Especially in peak hours in the morning and evening scores of pedestrians have to risk their lives and

This is a busy junction and a foot over bridge is very essential. The officials should provide alternative measures for pedestrians,”says R. Tirumal a private firm employee. The FoBs at two of the major junctions, i.e, St Ann’s High School and Hyderabad Public
School have been removed making it precarious for school children to cross the road. “After the tragic incident of a child losing her life while crossing the road from St. Ann’s high school, the FoB was constructed. It was safe as children would not have to deal with the over-speeding traffic. However now, with no proper zebra crossing, a huge road divider and the speeding traffic it has become risky for little children to cross the road,” says Premalatha a parent. Same is the case of students crossing the road at HPS. though there is a traffic signal monitoring the traffic, the removal of the FoB is causing great inconvenience to pedestrians. “The lives of pedestrians are at the mercy of speedy cars. They have to put up their hand to cross
the road. Alternatively FoB’s should be put up after proper planning immediately,” says activist Ramkrishna Murthy. Meanwhile the Hyderabad metro work department officials state that the new FoB will come up after six months. “We have temporarily removed six FoBs and will be restoring them in different locations after six months. New FoBs at Care Hospital, Banjara Hills, Mahaveer Hospital, Koti Hospital, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Zoo Park and Jubilee Hills Road No 45. have been suggested. We have made special arrangements like ensuring zebra crossing and additional traffic police to help pedestrians cross at places where these FoBs have been removed,” said Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) managing director NVS Reddy. Tiger Woods’ girlfriend cheating on him?
Md INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: In a fresh political development, Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC), the umbrella organisation of all pro-Telangana groups, has decided to go to National Capital Delhi next week. The decision of the TJAC comes in the wake of the recent statement of Union Home Minister Susheel Kumar Shinde that the Centre was mulling over three options for the status of Hyderabad city. According to highly placed sources of the Congress party, the three options before the Central government over Hyderabad status included making it a separate state, turning it into a Union Territory or keeping it as Joint Capital on a permanent basis. The news of these options shook the TJAC and forced it to immediately chalk out an action plan to prevent government from taking any course except declaring it the capital of Telangana State. The TJAC leaders have primarily decided to meet Leader of the opposition of Sushma Swaraj and urge her not to support options like making Hyderabad as UT or making it a separate state or joint capital of both the states. “We came to know that the Congress leader Digvijay Singh asked his Seemandhra colleagues to secure BJP’s support to make Hyderabad a UT or a separate state. This was also confirmed by BJP state president G. Kishan Reddy and others. We will not agree to any option except keeping Hyderabad as an integral part of Telangana state. It is an integral part of Telangana state and should remain so even after the division,” he quipped. The leader further added that they would meet the BJP and other pro-Telangana parties in New Delhi and request them not to support any attempt of congress to separate Hyderabad from Telangana state. The political spectrum from Telangana region also seems to be united on the issue. The ruling congress party leader Pyata Ramesh scoffed at the reports of making UT and separate state
and alleged that some antiTelangana forces and leaders were spreading such rumors. “Our party is committed to give Telangana with Hyderabad as its capital. It would never go back on its promise,” he affirmed. TDP state organising secretary PL Srinivas also expressed similar views. He said that the TDP would never agree to the proposal of making Hyderabad a UT or separate state. The main stake holder in Hyderabad politics, the AIMIM also reiterated its opposition over making it a UT. A senior MIM leader said that the party would launch huge agitation if the Centre went ahead with the decision of making the city a UT. ART
Return of the prodigal son Hyderabad’s best-known sculptor Ravinder Reddy was in the City recently. While here, he spoke about his art, heart and mind to Postnoon in a rare interview. AROUND THE
CITY
ARUN DANIEL YELLAMATY arunyellamaty@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The man known as the most expensive artist in the country, Ravinder Reddy, was in the City for the two-day contemporary art exhibition, First Edition, organised by Shalini and Dai Bhupal in collaboration with Sakshi Art Gallery at Taj Krishna. Ravinder Reddy’s brightly coloured, large-scale sculptures of modern city girls are an audacious and curious mix of contemporary and traditional convention. He embodies his protagonists in larger-than-life heads and nude figures, characterised by wide-open hypnotic eyes, glorified in gold, bright blues, striking reds and kitschy, oily pigments. Talking about his sculptures and his work, he said, “I make recognisable images, which people are familiar with; anyone from a layman to up-class people should be able to relate to it. They all can respond. That is why I think it is very popular because it appeals to different kinds of people in the society.” He added, “I displayed three sculpt heads of different sizes. It's nothing but the same heads we see on streets. I have moulded them, embellished them and decorated them with flowers, design and everything possible, and made them something that's nice to look at. It is an easy way to communicate. People
audiences have grown. The opportunities have grown and people should make use of all of this for their benefit. During our time there was nil exposure; it is a better field now and the competition has grown up too.” Talking about how sculpting is still growing unlike painting, which has already set a market for itself, he said, “Sculpting hasn’t opened up as much as painting has in today’s times. Reasons being, physical constrains, material constrains and space constrains. But it has grown; acceptance has grown among the people. Things are looking better than in the past.” His take on Sakshi Art Gallery: “Sakshi is a very respected gallery in the country. They keep hosting art shows, not only in major cities but in small cities too to educate people of art. I am happy to be part of Sakshi. I am happier that we are here in my home city.” want something to easily connect to, so I decided to make a face which people could recognise and easily connect to. Apart from features, I looked up to different hair-dos of people and played with the volumes and shapes.” The female heads in particular are steeped in Indian symbolism with complex hair-dos and garish ornaments. Despite their boldness and seemingly vulgar portrayal, the sculptures exude a serene charm and physical immediacy with a sense of mischief and mystery combined with sensuously nuanced details that make them soft, feminine and sensitive at the same time. “I reflect what I see in my sculpting,” he revealed. Talking about how his journey as a sculpture began, he said, “I am a trained sculpture. When you join an art school you have to choose an art form you like the most. I chose to do sculpting because I can feel what I am doing. I enjoy playing with the volumes and the form, so I ended up in three-dimension sculpting. In course of time, and it takes many years and a lot of hard work to reach what I am doing, I got here.” Sharing some tips for upcoming sculptors, he said, “We were trained in an old-fashion way; technologies weren't available, but now the medium has changed. Things have become more available than before and there are many materials easily available. The
Despite their boldness and seemingly vulgar portrayal, the sculptures exude a serene charm and physical immediacy with a sense of mischief and mystery combined with sensuality.
Ravinder grew up in Hyderabad; after his post-graduation here, he moved to Visakhapatnam. “I grew up here and am very much a Hyderabadi,” he declared proudly, going on to add, “My parents were not artists, so I have given a lot of freedom to my children to choose what they want to become. It’s their life. I never force them to do what I do.”

REPORTERS’ DIARY
‘Kaash, Hum bhi pseudo policeman hote!’
T
his reporter had a ticklish experience the other day when he went to collect information on pseudo police gangs busted by police recently. The officer on duty, who is about to retire, said in a half-jest half-serious mood, “Kaash hum bhi hote pseudo police!” He reflected the frustration in uniform where corruption is rewarded and honesty comes at a discount. The officer said the ‘Irani gang’ which goes around collecting illegitimate money wear safari suits just like the Task Force and keep a wireless phone to make it sound like official. The phone will be announcing serious matters of crime and the officers behave before their quarry in a serious and hurried manner of spiking criminals. Those whom they corner have little time to think of checking the veracity of the gang, and would like to wriggle out from some law breaking things they may have done. Who wants to have a quarrel with the law? These pseudo gangs operate because the constabulary is not above board and the judiciary lacks in fixing such criminals. These gangs have been active
in West Marredpally, Trimulgherry, Tukaram Gate, Karkhana, Sainikpuri and Monda Market of Secunderabad. (MS) ‘Niraadhar’ public and netas Voters of Andhra Pradesh are a dismayed and orphaned lot. Their netas have no time to think of the common man’s woes like unbearable price rise of vegetables and lately of cooking gas. While prices of fuel jump like mad and the Congress government seems unperturbed, the leaders are playing only one tune — opposing or supporting the bifurcation of the State. All political parties in AP are busy agitating either to keep the State united or demanding for the division but no one has time to spare for the dark deeds of the government that calls itself the protector of aam aadmi. In most instances when media persons interacted and put up queries, Randeep got personal and was insulting in the way he answered those asking questions. Snowden leaks sparked debate: US spy chief
WASHINGTON: Early childhood deaths around the world have been cut in half since 1990 but some 18,000 children under five still die every day, according to a new report out on Friday. Around 6.6 million children perished before their fifth birthday last year, compared to 12.6 million in 1990, said the report by UNICEF, World Bank and the WHO.
ISTANBUL: Turkish police used water cannon and tear gas late Thursday to break up fresh anti-government protests in Istanbul, amid anger over the death of a demonstrator earlier in the week. Officers faced 2,000-3,000 angry protesters on a second consecutive day of demonstrations in the Kadikoy district, an opposition stronghold.
WASHINGTON: Syria has scattered its stockpile of chemical weapons to as many as 50 sites in a bid to complicate US efforts to track them, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. A secretive Syrian military unit had been given responsibility to shift the arsenal of poison gases and munitions, questioning viability of a Russian plan to secure the weapons.
WASHINGTON: In a scene reminiscent of the Pixar movie "Up," an American adventurer set off Thursday in a daring bid to drift across the Atlantic in a wildly colorful cluster balloon. By sunset local time (2300 GMT), Jonathan Trappe was approaching Corner Brook, on the west coast of the Canadian province of Newfoundland.
WASHINGTON: Leaks from former US intelligence contractor E Snowden triggered a much needed debate about surveillance in the US, even if they jeopardised national security, the country's spy chief admitted on Thursday. National Intelligence Director James Clapper said, "Some of the conversations actually needed to happen."

MUMBAI: Shiv Sena Friday said it will support Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi or “any other candidate” named by the BJP as the prime ministerial candidate. The assurance came after a brief late Thursday night telephonic talk Modi had with Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray. Modi’s name is likely to be announced Friday by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the country’s top post. The Shiv Sena has been sitting on the fence over it and in the past, it had rooted for Sushma Swaraj as PM nominee. Party spokesperson and MP Sanjay Raut said that the Shiv Sena has decided to support Modi or any other person its ally the BJP puts forth as PM nominee. However, he refused to disclose the details of the conversation the two leaders had Thursday night. Interestingly, the Sena’s change of heart comes exactly a week after Thackeray had urged the BJP to let Modi remain as Gujarat CM till 2017. “Narendra Modi has publicly declared that he has no prime

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government late Thursday ordered the cancellation of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rally scheduled for Sep 15 in Fatehpur Sikri near Agra. Officials said that the district administration cancelled permission after reviewing the situation in the state in the wake of communal riots in Muzaffaranagar. The rally was to be addressed by party patriarch Lal Krishna Advani and BJP general secretary Varun Gandhi. As the news spread, angry BJP workers raised anti-government slogans and charged CM Akhilesh Yadav and his government of working under the pressure of state Minority Affairs Minister Mohammad Azam Khan. Sources say the party has decided to take the matter to the streets and ensure the Samajwadi Party government is exposed and cornered. IANS

‘Time to prove it’, US tells Assad The Syrian leader cast fresh doubt on how committed he is to a plan to secure Syria’s poison gas stocks by demanding that Washington first drop its threat of military action. JO BIDDLE feedback@postnoon.com GENEVA: President Bashar alAssad confirmed for the first time that Syria plans to give up its chemical weapons as the United States urged him and his Russian allies to quickly make good on his promise. But the long-time Syrian leader cast fresh doubt Thursday on how committed he is to a hastily-hatched plan to secure Syria’s poison gas stocks by demanding that Washington first drop its threat of military action against his regime. “When we see that the United States truly desires stability in our region and stops threatening and seeking to invade, as well as stops arms supplies to terrorists, then we can believe that we can follow through with the necessary processes,” Assad told Russian television.

Any deal to bring Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile under international control “has to be credible. It has to be timely and implemented in a timely fashion,” he said. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he believed the “solution” to the issue of Syria’s chemical weapons “makes unnecessary any strikes on Syria”. Pending the talks, US President Barack Obama has put on hold plans for limited military strikes against the Syrian regime to disable its chemical weapons capability, but US officials have repeatedly stressed that the option still remains on the table.

SAN FRANCISCO: Ray Dolby, who pioneered noise-reducing and surround-sound audio technologies which are fundamental to the music and film industries, has died aged 80, the company which bears his name announced Thursday. Dolby had suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease for a number of years, and was diagnosed with acute leukemia last July, it said, adding that the Oscar-winning scientist died at home in San Francisco. “Today we lost a friend, mentor and true visionary,” said Kevin Yeaman, President and CEO of Dolby Laboratories, the company which the young Dolby created in 1965. “Ray Dolby founded the company based on a commitment to creating value through innovation and an impassioned belief that if you invested in people and gave them the tools for success they would create great things. He added: “Ray’s ideals will continue to be a source of inspiration and motivation for us all.”

BUILDING HOPE
THE ART OF WAR
implement the recommendations. A decade after the war, no money has been made available and the only Liberian to face trial is Charles Taylor, and that was for his role in neighbouring Sierra Leone's civil conflict, not that in his own country.
In Liberia, a German blacksmith is transforming weapons of war into pieces of art and symbols of hope.
Liberia: A bloody past n Liberia is the only country in Africa founded by United States colonization while occupied by native Africans. Beginning in 1820, the region was colonized by blacks from the United States, most of whom were freed slaves. These immigrants established a new country with the help of the American Colonization Society, who thought former slaves would have greater opportunity in Africa.
ZOOM DOSSO feedback@postnoon.com MONROVIA: German blacksmith Manfred Zbrzezny and his apprentices hammer, file and weld in a steamy, dark workshop on the outskirts of the Liberian capital Monrovia, surrounded by parts for AK-47s, bazookas and other deadly arms. In another lifetime, these weapons were the cause of untold misery in a nation scarred by ruinous back-to-back civil wars, but now they are being transformed into symbols of hope for Liberians. Since 2007, Zbrzezny and his team at Fyrkuna Metalworks have been gathering parts of weapons decommissioned during the disarmament process after the conflict ended ten years ago to turn them into ornate flowerpots, lamps, furniture and sculptures. “It was strange from the beginning to work with weapons or instruments of destruction and suffering. The first two years I was working on this it remained very strange to me,” Zbrzezny said. “When I had a piece in my hands I would think about what was happening now to the perpetrators who used these weapons, and what was happening to the victims, and I would put the piece down to go drink a cup of coffee because it was a little bit oppressive.” Today, as he holds each weapon part, Zbrzezny is able to focus on its potential for bringing healing to the people of Liberia. “I do some thinking on how to transform it into something different, how to transform something that was destructive into something constructive, how to transform something negative into something positive,” he said. Deep psychological and physical wounds remain in Liberia after two civil wars which ran from 1989 to 2003, leaving a quarter of a million
people dead. Numerous rebel factions raped, maimed and killed, some making use of drugged-up child soldiers, and deep ethnic rivalries and bitterness remain across the west African nation of four million. Zbrzezny, who had worked as a blacksmith in Italy and Germany, came to Liberia in 2005, two years after the end of the rebel siege of Monrovia that brought a fragile peace to the west African nation. He failed initially to make money out of his trade until in 2007 he was approached by the owners of a riverside restaurant who asked if he could put his skills to transforming the parts of old weapons into a marinethemed banister. The project was such a success that he began making other pieces for the restaurant with parts from rocket-propelled grenade launchers and submachinegun barrels — then still

He began collecting weapons parts from a German charity involved in Liberia's disarmament process and made a business out of transforming instruments of war into candle stands, bookends, bells and bottle openers. “So it was by chance that I got into this. Now I employ five young Liberians who are learning the trade at the same time,” said Zbrzezny, who calls his work “Arms into Art”.
One of Zbrzezny's most ambitious projects was a “peace tree” fashioned in 2011 from weapons parts on Providence Island, part of Monrovia where freed slaves from the US landed in the 19th century to found the new republic. Momodu Paasawee, the caretaker for the area where the tree is exhibited, said it had become a symbol for reconciliation in postwar Liberia. “Seeing this tree reminds Liberians that the war has ended and never should we return to war... Tourists and Liberian students come here to see the tree,” he said. “Sometimes people come here believing that this is a real tree but I have to tell them that this is a peace tree made out of the barrels of guns.” Zbrzezny, who is married to a Liberian woman who is expecting their second child, says most of his customers are expats, with few Liberians buying his wares. Keen to expand his work, Zbrzezny has been trying to convince the United Nations mission in Liberia to donate its weapons scrap.
LEAVING THE PAST BEHIND
A Truth and Reconciliation Commission was set up by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to probe war crimes and rights abuses between 1979 and 2003, and particularly during the brutal conflicts that raged in 1989-96 and 1999-2003. The commission said a war crimes court should be set up to prosecute eight ex-warlords for alleged crimes against humanity but the government is yet to
n The First Liberian Civil War was an internal conflict in Liberia from 1989 until 1996. The conflict killed over 200,000 people and eventually led to the involvement of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and of the United Nations. The peace did not last long, and in 1999 the Second Liberian Civil War broke out. n The Second Liberian Civil War began in 1999 when a rebel group backed by the government of neighbouring Guinea, the Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD), emerged in northern Liberia. In early 2003, a second rebel group, the Movement for Democracy in Liberia, emerged in the south, and by June–July 2003, Charles Taylor's government controlled only a third of the country. The capital Monrovia was besieged by LURD, and that group's shelling of the city resulted in the deaths of many civilians. Thousands of people were displaced from their homes as a result of the conflict. The Accra Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed by the warring parties on August 18, 2003 marking the political end of the conflict and beginning of the country's transition to democracy.

SPACE ODYSSEY
Nasa looks for rock in a hard place Nasa has indentified three prospective asteroids for capture. They could be used as a defense system or to launch deep space missions. KERRY SHERIDAN feedback@postnoon.com WASHINGTON: The US space agency has narrowed its hunt for an asteroid to capture to three, NASA said Wednesday. The asteroids fit the requirements of being between seven to 10 meters in size, and further study should be able to narrow the choice even more, scientists said at a conference in San Diego, California. "We have two to three which we will characterize in the next year and if all goes well... those will be valid candidates that could be certified targets," said Paul Chodas, senior scientist at the NASA Near-Earth Object Program Office. The plan is to send a robotic spacecraft to capture the asteroid and drag it into orbit around the Moon. Once there, astronauts could visit the asteroid and take samples of it back to Earth for study. The spacecraft used for travel there and back would be the Orion multipurpose vehicle, which is being built but has not yet been used, as well as a new deep space rocket launcher. The program aims to break new ground by increasing NASA capabilities beyond low Earth orbit, where the International Space Station circles the globe.
AROUND THE
WORLD
NASA has touted the planetary defense capabilities the project would build toward protecting the Earth from a potential hazardous asteroid collision, as well as the technology it would boost for future human missions to deep space.
NASA has touted the planetary defense capabilities the project would build toward protecting the Earth from a potential hazardous asteroid collision. President Barack Obama has proclaimed the project would be a key step on the way to sending humans to Mars by the 2030s. Bill Gerstenmaier, associate administrator of NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Directorate, described the asteroid mission as "pretty compelling." "If you think about grabbing an object in space and then manipulating it for our use and putting it into a destination where we could go back and
routinely visit and let commercial companies go visit, I think that is a pretty compelling activity." Obama's 2014 budget for NASA asked for $100 million for the asteroid project, but the overall costs may be as high as $2 billion. "It's a little different way than just a date and a destination. We are really good at just picking dates and destinations. But that's really hard in this budget environment where things are constrained and we have flat budgets, et cetera et cetera, to pull that off," said Gerstenmaier. "It is not just a one-time thing. It actually feeds forward into the broader context of what we want to do with humans in space." The launch could happen as early as 2017 or as late as 2019. After launch of the robotic mission, the journey to the asteroid would take a year and a half, and the act of towing it toward the moon could take another three and a half years, NASA said. The project would use a new fuel technology called solar electric propulsion. "We are talking about engineering the solar system, in a way. We are talking about taking an asteroid which was once here, and then putting it into a useful orbit for our purposes. This is a very large idea here that we are talking about and I think it will reinvigorate interest in the space program," he said.
WHAT IS ARU?
T
he Asteroid Retrieval and Utilization (ARU) mission, also known as the Asteroid Initiative, is a potential future space mission proposed by Nasa. What is its purpose? The ARU is a mission to bring a small nearEarth asteroid into lunar orbit, where it could be further analyzed both by unmanned craft and by a future manned mission. Anytime soon? NASA hopes to complete the mission, which may take anywhere from six to 10 years, in time to accomplish its stated goal of landing humans on an asteroid by 2025. How much will it cost? The Asteroid Retrieval and Utilization mission, excluding any manned missions to an asteroid which it may enable, is predicted by a Keck Institute for Space Studies study to cost about $2.6 billion, of which $105 million has been proposed for 2014. How will the spacecraft be powered? The as-yet-unnamed spacecraft will use a Hall effect thruster (HET) which is a relatively low power device that is used to propel spacecraft once they get into orbit or farther out into space. In the HET, atoms are ionized and accelerated by an electric field. A radial magnetic field established by magnets on the thruster is used to trap electrons which then orbit and create an electric field due to the Hall effect. A large potential is established between the end of the thruster where neutral propellant is fed and the part where electrons are produced, so electrons trapped in the magnetic field cannot drop to the lower potential. The Neutral propellant is pumped into the chamber and is ionized by the trapped electrons. Positive ions and electrons are then ejected from the thruster as a quasineutral plasma, creating thrust.

COMPENSATION TALKS GENEVA: A two-day meeting of high street clothing brands and pressure groups aimed at reaching a compensation deal for victims of two Bangladesh factory disasters ended in failure, organisers said. The Geneva talks came after a building housing garment factories collapsed in Bangladesh in April, killing more than 1,100 people. They were aimed at agreeing compensation for the families of those victims and those of other factory disasters. Campaign groups that organised the meeting said only around a third of the firms invited had even turned up.

THE OTHER KOREA
14
IN YONGBYON, NORTH KOREA’S NUCLEAR HEART BEATS T he Yongbyon nuclear complex has been the beating heart of North Korea’s nuclear programme for more than 50 years — a source of great domestic pride and global anxiety. The mere suggestion that its main plutonium reactor may be back up and running has been greeted with grave concern and Russian warnings of a Chernobyl-like disaster. The founder of North Korea’s ruling dynasty, Kim Il-Sung, launched the country’s nuclear programme in the 1950s, sending scientists and engineers to the Soviet Union for training. With Soviet help, the complex at Yongbyon was established north of Pyongyang in the early 1960s and a Soviet-made twomegawatt reactor came on line in 1965. For the next 15 years, North Korea slowly weaned itself off its initial dependence on Soviet technology and fuel and, in 1979, construction began on the fivemegawatt reactor that is now back in the headlines. The gas-cooled facility began operating in 1986. At the time, the North told the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that its sole purpose was electricity generation. But suspicions of a dual military purpose were immediately aroused, given that the reactor’s design meant it could easily produce weapons-grade plutonium. North Korea signed the
nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 1985 but didn’t allow any inspection of the Yongbyon facilities until 1992. When IAEA inspectors eventually got access, their findings fuelled the dual-use suspicions. Moves in 1994 to remove spent fuel rods from Yongbyon triggered the first nuclear crisis with the United States. The Pentagon drew up plans to bomb the facility but diplomacy involving former US president Jimmy Carter and others averted a clash and led to an
eight-year shutdown. Under a 1994 ‘Agreed Framework’ deal with the US, an international consortium started work on two proliferation-resistant lightwater reactors. The US also provided an interim 500,000 tonnes a year of heavy fuel oil, although shipments were often delayed. The deal collapsed in 2002 when Washington accused Pyongyang of running a secret programme to produce highly enriched uranium. North Korea denied the charge but restarted Yongbyon,
expelled IAEA inspectors and announced it was leaving the NPT. In 2006, suspicions were turned into reality when North Korea conducted its first nuclear test. But just four months later it reached a six-nation deal which promised energy aid and major diplomatic benefits in return for full denuclearisation. Yongbyon was shut down in July 2007 and Pyongyang began disabling key plants there, publicly demolishing the plutonium reactor’s cooling tower in 2008.
Six-party negotiations later stalled because of disputes about ways to verify the North’s declared nuclear activities. In April 2009, Pyongyang said it was leaving the talks, again expelled IAEA inspectors and announced it was resuming its nuclear weapons programme. A month later it exploded its second nuclear device. North Korea then announced its intention to build an indigenous experimental light-water reactor and, in 2010, revealed it was enriching uranium when it allowed foreign experts to visit a centrifuge facility at the Yongbyon complex. The development fuelled international concern that the North was developing a twotrack nuclear weapons programme of both plutonium and uranium bombs. Pyongyang’s see-saw strategy shifted again in February 2012 when, after talks with the United States — it offered a moratorium on further nuclear and missile tests and on its uranium enrichment programme. The deal was short-lived and the North carried out a successful long-range rocket launch followed by its third — and most powerful — nuclear test in February this year. As military tensions soared on the Korean peninsula, Pyongyang announced in April a complete overhaul and upgrade of its Yongbyon facilities — including the plutonium reactor.

W
hen the Voyager-1 spacecraft was launched in 1977 it was meant to give us insights into our celestial neighbours, namely the planets in our solar system and their moons. Voyager accomplished this task with all the aplomb of Buck Rogers, and now it’s time for us to say goodbye. Last night Nasa announced that Voyager-1 has left the solar system and is now heading deep into the galaxy, frolicking in the stuff that makes up the beating heart of the Milky Way. We can barely begin to imagine the things this machine will see as it travels into the night sky, cut off from its masters who created it and sent it forth. syndrome of truly cosmic proportions. It is unlikely that we will ever see Voyager-1 again. It is unlikely that man as the species alive and kicking today will ever reach the stars, which is where Voyager is heading. Nano-tech self-replicating robots, however, may certainly do so. What will they make of that ancient technology slowly spinning its way through space? What will an alien species make of the hunk of metal? Voyager is the first bit of humanity’s galactic legacy. Long after we’re gone and our Sun has died, Voyager will still be out there. An integral part of the background noise that comprises the magnificence of our universe.

fter over two decades of making records, Sheryl Crow enters into a new phase of her recording career with the Warner release of Feels Like Home. Her decision to release an all-country project might surprise some, but a closer look at her music suggests that the genre has always been close to her heart. On her 1993 Tuesday Night Music Club album, the closing cut No One Said It Would Be Easy had a country influence, as have many of her works over the years — including Picture with Kid Rock, and appearances on tribute records to Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash. The verdict: She does shine in her country debut. Source: Billboard

ity-based band Ananda enthralled the audience with a fusion of contemporary and classical music when they performed at Hydourite Festival last week. The band members Bhanu Prakash Umapathi, Pramod Umapathi, G Prakash, Balaram and Sai Prakash struck the right chord and the audience couldn’t stop raving about the band. On the day, the band started with the composition Bliss of Life based on Raga Hamsadhvani; followed by a keethnana on Lord Krishna Pawana Guru Keerthana in Raga Hamsadhvani. Sound of Nature — performance by Pramod Umapathi on flute was a folk style composition with flavours of Hindustani style music. Also performed were a keerthana of Lord Rama and another composition on flute Simply Joy based on Raga
Mohanam. They also performed their own composition, The Mystical Journey in Raga Hemavati which was dedicated to the Hydourite event. One of the band members Bhanu Prakash talks about how the band was formed and why brothers, Bhanu Prakash and Pramod Umapathi teamed up for the band. “Both of us, Pramod Umapathi and me, have been performing individually for a long time now. My brother, who plays flute, is a well known
name in the music industry. So we decided to join hands and form a band. Ananda was formed in 2012,” he says. Within a year since its inception, Ananda has made quite a splash in the City. Bhanu couldn’t agree more. He says, “The journey has been good. We have done many shows for the corporate crowd and this concert has been the highlight. After the show, we had many people coming down and appreciating our performance.” Bhanu credits his grandfa-
ther as the reason why he became a singer for it was he who taught Bhanu how to sing. While his brother Pramod learned to play the flute from his father. “I learned to sing very early, thanks to my grandfather. He spotted my talent very early and trained me. My brother is a student of our father. Pramod has performed with a lot of well known musicians and his guru is Pandit Ronu Majumdar. My first solo album, Inspirations was launched by SP Balasubrahmanyam.” Bhanu says his dream is to make the band a renowned name not just in the City but all across the country. “We have performed a lot in the City, but we have big plans for the band. Maybe one day we will perform in other countries too,” he says. The literal meaning of the word Ananda is joy and the band aims to provide the same through its performances. Ananda as a band tries to bring joy through the universal language of music.

MIND THAT HEAD

WEIGHTY CAUSES
Obese people may be at higher risk for episodic migraines, a new study suggests. It found that the risk of painful headaches rose with body weight, especially in younger women.
E
pisodic migraines — the more common type of migraine — occur 14 days or fewer per month, while chronic migraines occur at least 15 days per month. Migraines involve intense pulsing or throbbing pain in one area of the head, according to the American Academy of Neurology. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines affect more than 10 per cent of the population. In the study of more than 3,800 adults, those with a high body-mass index (BMI) — a measure of body fat determined using height and weight — were 81 per cent more likely to have episodic migraines than those with a lower BMI. This was particularly true among women, whites and those under the age of 50. The cross-sectional study doesn’t prove that obesity
causes episodic migraines, but it does demonstrate that people who are obese have an increased risk of having more of them, even low-frequency ones, said lead author Dr. Barbara Lee Peterlin, director of headache research at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, in Baltimore. “These results suggest that doctors should promote healthy lifestyle choices for diet and exercise in people with episodic migraine,” Peterlin said in a statement. “More research is needed to evaluate whether weight-loss programs can be helpful in overweight and obese people with episodic migraine.” The study was published in the Sept. 11 issue of the journal Neurology. The researchers also presented the findings in June at the International Headache Congress in Boston. Dr. Gretchen Tietjen, director of the headache treat-
ment and research program at the University of Toledo, in Ohio, said she found the findings interesting because previous studies had looked for connections between obesity and chronic migraines. “That the researchers were able to show an association between obesity and episodic migraine lends more credence to some of the earlier studies that found similar things,” she said. She pointed out, however, that it still isn’t known which came first — the obesity or the migraine. There are many possible scenarios, Tietjen said. “Maybe the person had the migraines first and then started taking medications like amitriptyline or valproic acid,” she said. “Those medications are associated with weight gain.” The possible connection between obesity and migraines is still under debate. One theory supporting the link centers on inflammatory substances from fat tissue (adipose) that are released into the system, Tietjen said. Premenopausal women have more total adipose tissue in general than men, and women have more superficial and less deep adipose tissue, Peterlin said. But after menopause, adipose tissue is more similar between the two sexes. Adipose tissue secretes different inflammatory proteins based on how much tissue there is and where it is located. Since younger women and obese people have more adipose tissue, this could, at least in part, explain why they get more headaches.
On the other hand, Peterlin also suggested that a possible connection may be related to the brain. “Previous imaging data in migraine patients have shown activation of the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that controls the drive to feed,” she said. Alternatively, it could be that people who have migraines may be more inclined to behaviours associated with weight gain, such as being less active. Would losing weight mean migraines will decrease in frequency? Although weight loss is generally encouraged for people who are obese, that won’t necessarily result in migraine relief, Peterlin and Tietjen said. At least two small studies have evaluated migraines in people who were obese and underwent bariatric surgery to lose weight, Peterlin said. Although these studies did find that s o m e
patients experienced fewer headaches, the studies were small and more research needs to be done to see if this is consistent. It’s possible that the lifestyle changes needed for weight loss cut the migraine frequency, rather than the weight loss itself, the experts said. People who eliminate processed foods, high-calorie foods and alcohol — all of which can be migraine triggers — could end up experiencing fewer headaches. Unfortunately, the opposite could also be true if dieters introduce new foods that are migraine triggers. Some people may develop migraines when they consume certain sugar substitutes, for example. There also is limited data suggesting that people with severe obesity who exercise may have fewer migraines, Peterlin said. Source: WebMd

Technology SMOULDERING TROUBLE
China fire rattles world chip supply chain The scale of production now means that a fire or strike taking one factory out of action can reverberate around the world. SHANGHAI: A fire at a giant Chinese factory making almost one sixth of the world’s supply of a key high-tech component shows how vulnerable global manufacturing chains can be to an unexpected event, analysts say. The vast SK Hynix facility in Wuxi city produces dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, used to store data in personal computers and mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. The South Korean firm is the world’s second largest manufacturer of DRAM chips, and says it has a 30 percent market share, with the factory in eastern China accounting for half its output. Foreign firms have flocked to China, the workshop of the world, to take advantage of cheap labour, good infrastructure and accommodative local governments. Economies of scale gained through massive factory complexes help lower costs, but also bring with them risks should a company rely on a limited number of plants. The scale of production now means that a fire or strike taking one factory out of action can reverberate around the world. Hynix — whose customers include smartphone giants such as Samsung and Apple, which has just introduced two new iPhones — has only one other
DELL MAY GO PRIVATE NEW YORK CITY: Dell
shareholders approved a proposal led by company founder Michael Dell to take the iconic computer company private as it attempts to navigate a fastchanging technology market. The proposal, worth about $25 billion, won an unspecified majority of votes from the holders of Dell stock, Dell said in a statement. The buyers consortium sweetened the deal in recent weeks in response to criticism from activist Carl Icahn and others, who had complained their offer undervalued the company. The deal comes against a backdrop of profound change in the technology sector.
RENAULT GOES ELECTRIC
PARIS: French automaker Renault and the Bollore family group that runs a succesful pay-as-you go electric car network in Paris, are teaming up to develop technology. In a statement, the groups said they had agreed to develop car sharing systems for electric cars and cooperate on the manufacturing of the Bollore Bluecar. French Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg said the tie-up was "necessary", and would allow Renault to take advantage of the Bollore-developed battery.
facility producing DRAM chips, in South Korea. Partial production in Wuxi resumed three days after the September 4 blaze, which was reportedly caused by a gas leak, but a spokesman at the company’s headquarters told AFP: “It’s still too early to give the estimate of the damage and to predict when full operations may resume.” Analysts say such supply chain shocks can push up prices and potentially delay shipments for finished products. “As global smartphone shipments are at a high level...supplies (of memory chips) are sought-after,” said Wang Jun, of consultancy Analysys International. “Hynix is in a relatively advanced position in the global memory chip market, so even a single incident at one plant will have a domino effect.” Chip values spiked after the fire and are expected to remain buoyant, according to analysts. “Memory chip prices surged mainly because of expectations”
The facility produces dynamic random access memory chips, used to store data in personal computers and mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. of short supply, said Kevin Wang, director of China services at market research firm IHS iSuppli. “Prices will likely remain on an upward trend towards year-end.” A huge shortage of memory chips was unlikely in the next two months because of high inventories, he added, but the longer-term impact would depend on how soon Hynix could resume full production, which could take up to four to six months. In July Hynix posted record second quarter profits on the back of robust chip demand and strong semiconductor prices. Its operating profit for April-
June jumped to 1.1 trillion won ($1.0 billion), a sharp increase from 5 billion won a year earlier. No smartphone producers are known to have announced delays yet due to the fire, but analysts said it would inevitably have some impact. “Mobile phone producers related to Hynix will surely be affected, but shipments will gradually stabilise as other suppliers in the global supply chain will come in and fill the gap,” said Wang Jun. Global shipments of smartphones jumped 52.3 per cent annually to 237.9 million units in the second quarter this year, the strongest growth in more than a year, according to market intelligence firm International Data Corporation (IDC). IDC has forecast 40 per cent annual growth in worldwide smartphone shipments to over one billion units this year. But such explosive growth assumes other suppliers can meet demand for DRAM chips to fill the gap left by the Hynix fire, analysts said. AFP
VOYAGER IS GONE! WASHINGTON: Never before has a human-built spacecraft traveled so far. NASA's Voyager 1 probe has left the solar system and is wandering the galaxy, US scientists said Thursday. The spacecraft, which looks like a combination of a satellite dish and an old television set with rabbit ear antennas, was launched in 1977 on a mission to explore planets in our solar system. Against all odds, Voyager kept on moving and now is about 12 billion miles (19 billion kilometers) from our Sun in a cold, dark part of space that is between the stars, said Ed Stone, Voyager project scientist.

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

FIXING TROUBLE Another set-back for Srinivasan NEW DELHI: Narayanaswami Srinivasan’s hopes of chairing the Indian cricket board’s Sep 29 Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Chennai suffered another set-back as the Supreme Court Thursday postponed the hearing of the case between the BCCI and the Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB). The next hearing will be known on Saturday when the apex court finalises the schedule for next week. “The case was scheduled for Wednesday but it came up today (Thursday) very late around 3.40 p.m. Since the hearing was not possible in 20 minutes, it was postponed. The next date of hearing will be known on Saturday when the court prepares the schedule for next week,” BCCI counsel Radha Rangaswamy said. Asked about the chances of the case coming up next week, Rangaswamy said: “We don’t know. It is up to the court to decide.” The BCCI is challenging the Bombay High Court’s decision that had termed illegal the two-member probe panel comprising retired high court judges T. Jayaram Chouta and R. Balasubramanian. IANS

Kiwis notch two more wins SAN FRANCISCO: Emirates Team New Zealand won back-toback America’s Cup races on Thursday, thwarting efforts by defending champion Oracle to gain a desperately needed win. “They’ve almost got this thing in the bag,” Oracle Team USA skipper Jimmy Spithill said after the Kiwis notched two more victories. “Imagine if these guys lost from here what an upset that would be,” he added. “That would be one hell of a comeback, and that is the kind of thing I would like to be part of.” The victories on Thursday brought the number of Kiwi victories to six and puts the challenger just three wins away from wresting yachting’s cherished prize from the hands of Oracle, which has won only one race in the series. “It feels great,” New Zealand skipper Dean Barker said of the lead his team holds ahead of the next Cup races, which are set to take place on Saturday.

Barker said he avoids reading about the mounting fervor in New Zealand as his team dominates on the San Francisco Bay. “I will definitely join them in the bar if things go well,” Barker quipped. AFP

BMW CHAMPIONSHIP

Snedeker seizes lead Snedeker fired an 8-under 63 to grab a one shot lead over Zach Johnson.
CHICAGO: Brandt Snedeker fired an eight-under 63 that included a sizzling stretch of seven straight birdies on Thursday to grab a one-shot lead after one round of the BMW Championship. Snedeker defied gusty winds on the par-71 Conway Farms Golf Club course — hosting a PGA Tour event for the first time — and held a onestroke lead over fellow American Zach Johnson. Johnson, a two-time winner this year, had seven birdies in a flawless seven-under 64 and was two strokes in front of world number one Tiger Woods, former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, Steve Stricker and Kevin Streelman. Reigning Masters champ Adam Scott, of Australia, posted a four-under 67, and shared seventh place with John Merrick, Ryan Moore and Nick Watney. Snedeker opened on the back nine and his run of seven straight birdies began at 13. “One of those days where everything seemed to go right in the middle of the round,” Snedeker said. tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs ranked ninth in the standings and already in line to become the first player to return to the Tour Championship the year after winning the playoffs crown and its $10 million bonus. Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, who shot to the top of the playoff standings with his win at the Deutsche Bank Championship two weeks ago, carded a oneover 72. Woods, who came into the week at second in the playoff race, said his score could have been better but for a trio of missed putts from within five feet — two of them leading to bogeys. “I’m not exactly real happy,” said Woods, who had seven birdies to go with his two bogeys. “I played well and I just didn’t get much out of that round.” Woods failed to birdie any of the three par-fives, although he finished on a good note with a long birdie putt at the par-four ninth, his final hole of the day. “One of those days,” Woods said. Defending champion Rory McIlroy, who won this title last year at Crooked Stick, struggled to a seven-over 78 and was tied for 66th place. AFP
Nibali still in red, Kiryienka wins stage MADRID: Italian Vincenzo Nibali clung on to his narrow lead of the Tour of Spain after a gruelling 18th stage on Thursday. Sky’s Belarusian rider Vasil Kiryienka won the stage after breaking away at the end of the 186.5km ride from Burgos to Pena Cabarga that featured five categorised climbs, including a tricky final ascent. Kiriyenka’s breakaway to the summit of Pena Cabarga almost cost Nibali his lead atop the general classification, now cut to just three seconds. The Sicilian, who rides for Astana, couldn’t respond to a push by the Katusha team in the final ascent, and then the attack by RadioShack’s 41year-old American rider Chris Horner, who was sixth across the finish line. Nibali, who finished 10th 25sec off Horner, also gave away time to Spaniards Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), now third in the overall standings at 1:10, and Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha), fourth at 2:24.
DAVIS CUP Djokovic, Pospisil to open semis
Nadal to lead Spain in play-offs
BELGRADE: World number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia will play against the 41st ranked Canadian Vasek Pospisil at the opening match of a Davis Cup semifinal showdown on Friday in Belgrade. Djokovic, who suffered his third loss in four consecutive trips to the US Open final against Spain’s Rafael Nadal on Sunday, will try to get his team off to a good start, as Serbia eyes Davis Cup glory after their victory in 2010 against France. The trophy was a prelude to a magnificent 2011 season for the 26-year-old Serbian, which saw him win the US and Australian opens and Wimbledon. The first match, starting at 1400 GMT, will be followed with by a rubber between Montenegro-born Canadian Milos Raonic, the world number 11, and the 23rd-ranked Janko Tipsarevic. In the doubles on Saturday, Nenad Zimonjic and Ilija Bozoljac will face Pospisil and his team-mate Daniel Nestor. The 27-year-old world number two, who has not played for Spain since their 2011 Davis Cup triumph against Argentina, will play on his favourite clay surface in the tie at Madrid’s Caja Magica. Nadal will face Sergiy Stakhovskiy in the second singles rubber on Friday, after Fernando Verdasco and Alexandr Dolgopolov meet in the first match. Elsewhere, Andy Murray will make his Davis Cup return for Great Britain in their tie against Croatia. The Wimbledon champion will face Borna Coric in the first singles rubber on Friday in Umag. Roger Federer will not feature for Switzerland in their tie against Ecuador, but world number 10 Stanislas Wawrinka, a semi-finalist at the US Open last week, will feature for the Swiss. ENGLAND VS AUSTRALIA
Strauss backs Pietersen as ‘mentor’
With many key players missing from the current England ODI squad, Strauss believes that Kevin Pietersen can act as a mentor. JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse BIRMINGHAM: Andrew Strauss believes Kevin Pietersen can act as a “mentor” to an inexperienced England one-day side despite his own sometimes difficult relationship with the star batsman. Pietersen was briefly cast into the international wilderness last year after being accused of sending derogatory text messages about then England captain Strauss to South Africa players. England lost that Test series to the Proteas and Strauss, who’d been struggling for runs, promptly retired from all senior cricket -- a decision he insisted had nothing to do with the fall-out from the controversy sparked by Pietersen, the man
RETIREMENT
Jones bows out of first class game LONDON: Glamorgan seamer Simon Jones, one of the stars of England’s 2005 Ashes triumph, announced his retirement from first-class cricket on Thursday. The 34-year-old Welshman’s contract with county side Glamorgan expires at the end of the current season, but he intends to make himself available to play Twenty20 cricket.”My current contract with Glamorgan finishes at the end of the season, so it’s given me a chance to reflect on what I do next,” Jones said. “I missed some games early season, so to come back in and be part of getting the team to Lord’s (for the domestic 40-over championship final) has left me hungry to continue playing. The Yorkshire Bank 40 final is a fitting opportunity to stop playing the longer forms of the game and concentrate on T20 cricket, where I know I can still be at my explosive best.” AFP
he succeeded as England skipper. Pietersen, however, was soon back in the England fold and now finds himself the senior player in a one-day squad where his fellow recent Ashes-winners Alastair Cook, now the regular captain, Ian Bell, James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann have all been rested ahead of the return Test series in Australia starting in November. England are 1-0 down in a fivematch series, with their convincing 88-run loss at Old Trafford separating rain-ruined no results at Headingley and again at Edgbaston on Wednesday. But whatever the outcome of the series, which continues in Cardiff on Saturday, Strauss believes the experience of playing alongside
Pietersen, whose 2013 has been blighted by injuries, can only benefit the likes of 22-year-old all-rounder Ben Stokes. “He can be really good with young players, actually,” Strauss told reporters at Edgbaston on Thursday when asked about the 33-year-old Pietersen. “I think it’s good that he’s playing this one-day series, and him opening the batting in one-day cricket is an interesting and potentially quite explosive option for England to use. “Given that he’s had injuries, and whatever, it’s quite nice for him to have a good run of cricket.”I hope he is playing that mentoring role and playing it well.”
ZIMBABWE VS PAKISTAN
Late strikes give Pak hope HARARE: Three late wickets gave Pakistan renewed hope after Zimbabwe played themselves into a strong position on the third day of the second Test against Pakistan at Harare Sports Club on Thursday. A five-wicket haul by Brian Vitori and a century stand between Tino Mawoyo and Hamilton Masakadza put Zimbabwe on top before both partners and nightwatchman Tinashe Panyangara fell in the last three overs of the day. Zimbabwe were 121 for four at the close, an overall lead of 185 on a wearing pitch which has made stroke play difficult for batsmen of both sides. Left-arm fast bowler Vitori took five for 61 as Pakistan collapsed to 230 all out, losing their last six wickets for 19 runs and giving Zimbabwe a first innings lead of 64. Stand-in opening batsman Prosper Utseya was caught at midwicket off Rahat Ali for five when Zimbabwe batted again with regular opener Vusi Sibanda feeling ill. wicket with some of the most impressive batting of the match. Mawoyo made 58 off 165 balls before he was trapped leg before wicket by left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman shortly before the close. Masakadza followed up his first innings of 75 with 44 before he too fell leg before, to left-arm fast bowler Rahat Ali. Rehman claimed a
second wicket in the last over of the day when Panyangara was caught at short leg. Rehman took two for 20 in 15.2 accurate overs. Earlier, Pakistan were wellplaced to overhaul Zimbabwe’s first innings total of 294 until Asad Shafiq was fifth man out shortly before lunch, bowled by Tendai Chatara with the total on 211. The match swung dramatically in Zimbabwe’s favour after lunch when Younis Khan, the mainstay of their innings, clipped Panyangara to midwicket after making a patient 77 off 223 balls with nine fours. Rehman was leg before wicket to Panyangara off the next ball and Vitori ripped out the last three batsmen to give Zimbabwe an important lead on a tricky pitch. Only 48 runs were scored in 28 overs during the morning’s play for the loss of two wickets, while six further wickets fell while 49 runs were scored in 22.5 overs between lunch and tea. The scoring rate picked up slightly after tea as 91 runs were scored off 36.2 overs. Pakistan captain Misbah-ulHaq made a laboured 33 off 120

Bayern bosses turn heat on Pep
Bayern are second in the Bundesliga behind rivals Borussia Dortmund and launch the defence of their Champions League title against CSKA Moscow next Tuesday. BERLIN: Bayern Munich’s bosses have put pressure on coach Pep Guardiola ahead of Saturday’s Bundesliga home match with Hanover 96 as the European champions enter a tough few weeks. Bayern are second in the Bundesliga behind rivals Borussia Dortmund and launch the defence of their Champions
League title against CSKA Moscow next Tuesday. Then follows an away trip to Schalke 04, home matches against Hanover, again, in the cup, Wolfsburg in the league, then a Champions League away trip to Manchester City before facing Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga — all in the next three weeks.
Despite their punishing schedule, Bayern’s top brass expect their side to prove they are just as strong under Guardiola as they were under his predecessor Jupp Heynckes. Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said there can be no more excuses. “We’re at the stage where you can’t allow for any more weaknesses”, he said,
refering to Bayern’s 1-1 draw at Freiburg a fortnight ago. Stern-faced director of sport Matthias Sammer also described the result as “reckless and annoying” after Guardiola fielded a weakened side. Dutch winger Arjen Robben believes Bayern must quickly turn their attentions back to the league.
