SC verdict worries leaders Following the verdict barring criminals and arrested persons from contesting polls, almost all offices of these political parties have seen closed-door meetings for hours by leaders facing criminal charges. Md INKESHAF AHMED
ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The Supreme Court verdict barring criminals and arrested persons from contesting polls has sent the State’s netas into a tizzy. Top leaders of the ruling Congress, Opposition TDP, YSRC, TRS and MIM are all a worried lot. The reason is that most of the top district- and state-level
leaders and public representatives like MLAs, MPs from these political parties are involved in criminal cases facing serious charges. Following the verdict,
almost all offices of these political parties have seen closeddoor meetings for hours by leaders facing criminal charges. The leaders were so concerned about the judgement of the Supreme Court that they pressed their personal advocates to find out a solution. Many a TDP MLA who met at the Telugu Desam Legislature Party (TDLP) Office on Saturday wore worried looks. The leaders were not in a position to even give their stand on the Supreme Court judgement.

H
ere is a real story from the City that would make vamps in movies look like fairies. When Mounika and Sherya, aged seven and nine respectively, were enrolled at the government hostel for SC girls in Shamshabad, little did they know about the nightmare that lay in store for them. The girls’ mother, Sharda, a labourer, had put them up at the
hostel last June because she was constantly on the move in search of work. The father had abandoned the family a few months back. The sisters, both in Class III, are bright students. Laxmi, the hostel’s caretaker, was a rule unto herself and used brutal torture methods on children. The boarders were beaten, bruised, pierced with pins and subjected to electric shocks by Laxmi. The sheer mental trauma was so much that despite enduring these abuses, no one dared to come out and complain against her. And the nightmare would have gone on indefinitely if it was not for a free medical camp
the hostel. The family approached Shamshabad MRO B Lachchi Reddy, who immediately ordered an inquiry into the matter. It was revealed that the caretaker, who has been working at hostel for the last few years, was having a free run because the warden Noorjahan rarely showed up for work, let alone pay attention to how the institution was being run. Reddy said he was appalled by the incident and that Laxmi will be suspended pending inquiry. He filed a complaint with the RGI police against her. Further action will be taken after a woman sub-inspector completes the investigation.

evere encroachments of the entire tank bund could lead to flooding this monsoon. A stitch in time can save nine, but seems like the GHMC will wait for the situation to get worse and irreparable to get into action. With only two days of continuous rains the Hussainsagar Lake had reached its full tank level of 513.41 m causing panic among residents especially around that area. Well, the monsoon has just begun and there is a long way to go. In 2000, the City had witnessed severe floods. However, even now the government seems to care less about a possibility of the ordeal repeating. The catchment area of the Hussainsagar Lake is drained by five nalas covering separate watersheds. The total catchment area is about 275 sq km covering Kukatpally, Dulappally, Bowenpally, Yusufguda and
THE CITY WITNESSES FLOODS EVERY YEAR. HOWEVER, THE GOVERNMENT SEEMS TO CARE LESS ABOUT A POSSIBILITY OF THE ORDEAL REPEATING. Khairatabad watersheds. The maximum length of watersheds is about 15 km. In most of the areas the nallas have been encroached by both public and private industries who have constructed houses and establishments right in the course of the nala. Despite several warning by various environmentalist groups, the government has taken no action. In fact, not only the sorrounding areas around the Hussain Sagar Lake, but the lake itself has been encroached for commercial purpose. Despite it being illegal to have advertisement hoardings,
the GHMC has been giving permission for various commercial establishments. It is because of these encroachments that the there is no outflow of the water, which is further weakening the tankbund. Recently a 15-feet trench was dug for an advertising unipole on tankbund, that too right opposite the police post! Despite environmentalists and experts warning the government of the threat posed by this development, the authorities have done nothing. Now the trench is completely filled with water and is threatening the tankbund’s structure. Jadveen Jairath from Save Our Urban Lakes (SOUL) says, “The situation of the Hussainsagar Lake has to come to this state is only because of the negligence of the GHMC. For several years we have been cautioning them about shrinking Hussainsagar is likely to trigger massive urban floods. However, they have done little to curb the problem. Recently in January,
when the trench was dug up, we informed the authorities about the threats of the Unipole being constructed. However, no action was taken and the trench has not been filled up till date. Few weeks back, in a joint inspection, GHMC city planner GV Raghu had come to inspect the site and agreed with us, bus so far nothing has been done.” When Postnoon contacted the GHMC officials, they say that they have cleared 50 per cent of the encroachment so far. However, they admit that political and commercial pressure is hampering more effective action.

Didi to probe CPI-M leaders’ bank account Biman Bose in cross hairs over `16 crore in joint account. KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday said her government would inquire into the source of funds allegedly held by two Communist Party of IndiaMarxist (CPI-M) leaders in a joint bank account. The CPI-M claimed that the account was of the party state committee but admitted its mistake in keeping party funds in accounts opened in the name of its leaders. However, CPI-M state secretary Biman Bose trashed Banerjee’s allegation of lack of transparency. Addressing panchyat poll rallies for her party Trinamool Congress in the neighbouring North 24 Parganas district, Banerjee accused the central government of ignoring such “financial irregularities". Banerjee also questioned how Bose could have a “personal account” with `16 crore in it when he did not even possess a
PAN card and was only a party wholetimer. “What would have happened had you or I had even `1 lakh? The Income Tax Department and the CBI would have grilled us and arrested us. And how much does Biman Bose earn? He is only party wholetimer." “We will probe the source of this `16 crore. Where did this come from? Did it fall from the skies?" asked Banerjee. Iterating that the account was with a public sector bank, she said: “Why is the central government silent? In other cases they unleash the CBI? Why aren’t they doing so now? Is it because they are blind or they have cataract? Or is it because they have a strong tieup with the CPI-M?" Banerjee asked, and accused the Marxist party of siphoning off funds during its 34-year rule in West Bengal.

Haryana’s Additional Chief Secretary (Forests) Ramender Jakhu has appealed to people to make their special occasions “memorable” by planting saplings, a state government spokesperson said Sunday. “For the safe future of people, animals and birds, it is essential to increase the area under forest. The decrease in number of plants not only results in different kind of diseases but also leads to depleting water table," Jakhu was quoted as saying by the spokesperson. He said the state forest department has undertaken an initiative to plant about 30 million saplings during this monsoon season.

A day after making a widely hailed speech at the United Nations, the 16year-old said she would devote her life for the education of girls. The UN appearance was Malala's first public speaking engagement since a Taliban gunman shot her in the head last October in a bid to end her campaign to get girls into schools.

Trayvon Martin murder case
Zimmerman not guilty A six-woman jury found watchman George Zimmerman not guilty of murdering unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin, in a racially-charged trial that has transfixed the United States. SANFORD: "Mr. Zimmerman, I have signed the judgment that confirms the jury's verdict. Your bond will be released. Your GPS monitor will be cut off when you exit the courtroom over here. And you have no further business with the court," Judge Deborah Nelson said shortly after the decision was read. Zimmerman smiled briefly but did not appear emotional as
the verdict was read. His family was grinning broadly as they sat behind him in the courtroom. The family of Trayvon Martin was not present. Scores of journalists and crowds of demonstrators had gathered outside the courthouse in the dark, awaiting the verdict. Many of the demonstrators were chanting, "no justice, no peace." The jury had deliberated for
more than 16 hours since Friday in the case. Zimmerman, 29, had been accused of pursuing Martin through a gated community in Sanford, Florida and shooting him during an altercation. Defense lawyers insisted Zimmerman acted in self-defense after Martin, 17, wrestled him to the ground and started bashing his head into the pavement.

E-filing of income tax returns to surge on new norms Gyanendra Kumar Keshri feedback@postnoon.com
NEW DELHI: Electronic filing of income tax returns is likely to jump sharply this year as the government has brought down the mandatory limit of online filing to income above Rs.5 lakh from the earlier `10 lakh. “A large number of people come under `5 lakh to Rs.10 lakh category. The lowering of income limit for mandatory e-filing will give a boost to online filing of returns,” Vineet Agarwal, a director at KPMG India, told IANS. He said online filing was becoming increasingly popular and it has helped in reducing cost and time required for processing the returns. “It is good for both the taxpayers as well as the government. It is cost effective, takes less time and the processing is faster,” Agarwal said. The government has made electronic filing mandatory for all those taxpayers whose taxable income exceeded `5 lakh in the financial year 2012-13 or assessment year 2013-14. The assessment year is always one year ahead of the financial year. Until financial year 2011-12, this mandatory limit was for the taxable income exceeding `10 lakh. Ankur Sharma, co-founder and chief executive officer of TaxSpanner.com, a leading ereturn intermediary, said the number of electronic filing of returns is estimated to jump by almost 50 per cent this year.
“Last year, nearly 50 per cent of tax returns were filed electronically. This year, with the mandatory online filing for individuals earning more than ` 5 lakh, the penetration of e-filing is expected to be more than 75 per cent,” Sharma told IANS. He said the increase in penetration of e-filing in India has been far more sharper than even the countries like the US. “It took more than two decades for e-filing penetration to reach this level in the US. India has achieved this remarkable feat in just over 5 years,” he
THE GOVERNMENT HAS MADE ELECTRONIC FILING MANDATORY FOR ALL THOSE TAXPAYERS WHOSE TAXABLE INCOME EXCEEDED `5 LAKH. said. “Of the e-returns filed, nearly 73 per cent have been filed voluntarily by taxpayers indicating the broader acceptance of the
convenience of e-filing,” Sharma added. As always, the deadline for filing income tax return is July 31. There is usually a huge rush among the taxpayers in July to file the returns. Sharma said although there is no procedural changes introduced by the government, e-filing portals have taken several steps to make the process simpler. The new features include efiling by email, automatic Form 26AS matching and automatic return preparation from digital brokerage statements.
Taxpayers can either file the returns themselves by logging on to the Income Tax Department website incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in, or through e-return intermediaries. Filing of return through the department’s website is free of cost, while e-return intermediaries charge a fee of around `250 to `1,000, depending on the kind of services. The popular e-return intermediaries are TaxSpanner.com, Taxsmile.com, myITreturn.com, Taxyogi.com, and taxshax.com. On estimated growth in income tax mop-up, Agarwal said the revenue from the income tax would rise sharply despite a sluggish economic growth, as the government is taking measures to tap tax evaders. “Revenue will be higher from tax despite sluggish 5-6 per cent GDP growth. It will depend more on how the tax evaders and black money is being brought into the tax net,” Agarwal said. Nearly 34 million or just around three per cent of the 1.2 billion people in India filed tax returns in 2012-13. In the union budget, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has set a direct tax collection target of `6,68,109 crore for the financial year 2013-14, 19.69 per cent higher than the last year’s figure. Direct taxes include personal income tax, corporate taxes and Securities Transaction Tax. Income tax contributes more than half of the total direct tax IANS collections.

EDITORIALS CRIMINAL POLITICIAN gets SC telling off The Supreme Court ruling that all MPs and MLAs convicted in criminal case will be disqualified from holding office from the day they are convicted by a trial court does not worry YS Jagan Mohan Reddy alone who has been in jail for more than a year in the illegal assets case. Around 20 per cent of the MLAs from Andhra Pradesh (54 of 295), 14 of the 60 MPs and eight of 90 MLCs also have a criminal background. According to an NGO study, of the 83 MLAs booked for various offences, 54 have been booked for serious criminal offences. Fourteen of the 60 MPs are facing various charges, eight of them for criminal offences. Eight of the 90 MLCs have cases registered against them, of which three are criminal cases. The CBI has refused to provide information on cases against some MLAs and MPs. The MIM tops the list with 71 per cent of its MLAs facing criminal charges, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (55 per cent), the BJP (50), Telugu Desam (25) and the Congress (10 per cent). The CPI, CPI (M), Lok Satta and independent parties were given a clean chit in the Good Governance study. TV Rama Rao, a TD MLA from Kovvuru in West Godavari district, is charged with raping and murdering a college student. Yarapathineni Sreenivasa Rao, a TD MLA from Gurajala in Guntur, and Akbaruddin Owaisi, MIM MLA from Chandrayangutt, are facing murder charges. Despite Press Council of India chairperson Markandey Katju pointing out that judiciary cannot make laws, guilty politicians and parties are left squirming over their misdemeanour.

A SURREAL CONCEPT CALLED SURROGACY From the hip SYED SHOAIB
W
hile Shah Rukh Khan had the last word on the gender issue of his new child, it is the concept of surrogacy that baffles me most. After an enquiry, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation gave a clean chit to the actor and his wife over the sex determination case. Shah Rukh apparently responded to the charges saying that he had not undergone any sex determination test of the unborn child nor had he released any statement of the child being a boy. Despite admiring Aamir Khan for having a surrogate baby in 2011 without controversy, not many amongst are comfortable with a mystery concept called a surrogate baby. The idea, common in the West, still makes some of us squirm. Why a third child, that too after a son and daughter? Why not adoption? Why secrecy in surrogacy? Can we determine the sex of the baby in surrogacy? Surrogacy has been defined as a woman bearing a child on behalf of a couple unable to have a child, either by artificial insemination from the man or implantation of an embryo from the woman. Surrogacy, an alternative reproductive option that was considered a last resort and mostly a hush-hush choice of couples, is slowly hopping across to the mainstream. Doctors confirm there are a lot of stigmas related to surrogacy in India. When a celeb couple opts for a surrogate child, it helps a lot to shed myths and several couples who were confused if they should opt for the procedure, have decided to go in for it. The role models have done a great service to childless couples by bringing the procedure to limelight and helping couples shed their inhibitions. Some lesbian couples find gestational surrogacy attractive because it permits one woman to contribute her egg and the other to carry the child. Surrogacy, as a treatment, is a blessing in disguise for many women unable to bear a child and also comes in handy for many economically deprived women. In Bangalore, the country's medical tourism capital, around 75 women have lent their womb to other women over the past two years. Foreigners are attracted to
India because it is cheaper than in the West to have a surrogate child. The 'package' for surrogacy can vary between `8,00,000 to `15,00,000, including the cost of doctors, legal fees, antenatal care, surrogate compensation, egg donor, drugs and consumables, and IVF costs. There are two types of surrogacy — traditional surrogacy and gestational surrogacy. In traditional surrogacy, a surrogate mother is artificially inseminated, either by the intended father or an anonymous donor, and carries the baby to term. The child is thereby genetically related to both the surrogate mother, who provides the egg, and the intended father or anonymous donor. In gestational surrogacy, an egg is removed from the intended mother or an anonymous donor and fertilised with the sperm of the intended father or anonymous donor. The fertilised egg, or embryo, is then transferred to a surrogate who carries
the baby to term. The child is thereby genetically related to the woman who donated the egg and the intended father or sperm donor, but not the surrogate. Traditional surrogacy is more controversial than gestational surrogacy, in part because
SOME LESBIAN COUPLES FIND GESTATIONAL SURROGACY ATTRACTIVE BECAUSE IT PERMITS ONE WOMAN TO CONTRIBUTE HER EGG AND THE OTHER TO CARRY THE CHILD. the biological relationship between the surrogate and the child often complicates the facts of the case if parental rights or the validity of the surrogacy agreement are challenged. As a result, most states prohibit tradi-
tional surrogacy agreements. Additionally, many states that permit surrogacy agreements prohibit compensation beyond the payment of medical and legal expenses incurred as a result of the surrogacy agreement. Women activists assert that surrogacy can never be a step forward for women. Renting a womb is exploitative. It is no different from prostitution in terms of the contracts involved and the commercial business of surrogacy is just a get-rich-quick scheme benefiting only the doctors, lawyers and agencies, alike, they voice. India does not have a surrogacy law at present; only a set of guidelines, which are so liberal that they almost read like a charter of medical tourism or test tube baby industry. Since infertility affects 10 per cent of our population, a law to regulate and stop misuse of surrogacy will be a blessing.

A BATTLE OF THE SEXES
“C
ompared to the plight of millions of women in the country today, there might be few willing to cry them a river. But the question here is not so much the nature of their fight or their gender as it is about their right to a fair hearing and an open trial.” This is such a pivotal point in this debate; I want to thank the author for bringing this up. Because she is right, what we forget is this is not a battle of the sexes. It’s a battle for right and wrong. It’s a battle for justice. Innocents should not be punished, irrespective of whether they are men or women.

NOW YOU KNOW WHAT WE ’ RE TALKING ABOUT
A
s a victim and survivor of domestic violence, I thought I should clarify a few things. But before I lay it out for you, lemme first say. You poor thing. Really, that is so unfair. What did men ever do to deserve this suspicion, I wonder. And men are seeking to eliminate this, how? And oh, the rapes, the murders, the violence, the foeticides just happen to be co-incidental, right? But wait. They must all be lies perpetuated by us women. So, now you know how it feels to be wronged, to be powerless, huh? To be blamed for something that was not your fault. To carry the burden of your gender every single minute of every single day. Now, when it came to you, you want to talk about rights and mis-
use of power and everything else. What did you do to ever help women before this so there would never have been a need for laws like this? If law enforcement authorities in your country readily believe that men are abusers /harassers/ molesters/rapists, it is because it has been proven time and again that 9/10 times they are! You made the system like this. So now if you are caught, you have only yourself to blame. That, my friend, is the truth. Correct, all men are not like that. But all women are manipulative and scheming and because of this, tens of thousands of men are either
killing their wives or themselves. Sure. Here’s the thing. What I think the author was trying to say was that the problems faced by millions of women through the ages does not mitigate the injustice being done to men today. Two wrongs don’t make a right. So, technically, she was making a case for you. However, it seems that it’s not just language but also comprehension that seems to have eluded you. Good day.
THINK
T
OF THE CHILDREN
he governments, both at the Centre and State, have never taken care of children of poor communities and have allowed rapid commercialisation (of education), which leads to the consequent loss of discipline and exploitation of parents by collecting hefty sums as donations for unjustified reasons. As the department of education lost control over school managements, corruption has become rampant. Corporate schools and religious minority institutions enjoy patronage of political leaders and senior officials in the State government. In such a scenario, who will protect the students of poor and middle classes? But closing down of schools for failure to implement RTE Act may not be the solution. Identifying notorious managements, schools and their prosecution, appointment of special officers for limited periods for proper regulation and functioning of notorious schools may help proper implementation of RTE Act.

WHEN
HEROES TURN VILLAINS
O
ur Society has become a very tough place to live in these days. An ordinary citizen always lives in fear of one or the other. It might be police or a rich man or a politician. And now joining the list are our beloved heroes as we call them with pride. I was stunned when I saw the news about Ram
Charan Teja. How could he do what he did because someone blocked his way? Some channels reported that he hit the two techies, some others reported that it were his bodyguards. Whatever the case, it’s disturbing to see a star, whom we thought was a good human being, involving in brawls on roads. I was a big fan of Ram Charan, but since that incident, I cannot say that anymore. Let
me also make a request to Ram Charan: Please do not be in the illusion that you can hit anyone in real life as you do in your films. You very well know these are the people that make you what you are: your father Chiranjeevigaru should know. Remember, you are a part of a very famous family and such incidents are bad for the reputation of not just yours but of the whole family. And if there’s
more to the incident than meets the eye, please speak out, as there are many like me who want to believe that the news is false.

PURE MAGIC OF STREET FOOD

CELEBRATING HYDERABAD
T
he Nawabi city of Hyderabad, though small, has a big heart, as it has something to offer to anybody. The lavish cuisine for the foodies, the local markets for the shoppers, rich life for the high and haughty or the busy life for a common man — Hyderabad has it all! For me, Hyderabad has been more like a teacher and guide. Long drives on Necklace Road help me clear my head. Sitting on a bench overlooking the Hussain Sagar Lake has always brought me peace and opened doors to fresh perspectives. It’s fast pace reminds me that life is indeed short. It’s rich cultural life screams, “Variety is the spice of life.” And lastly, the four towers of the Charminar, still standing strong for ages is a symbol of individuality which inspires me to be bold and strong. Hyderabad in itself is a celebration of life and I intend to live it to the fullest!
PEOPLE OF THIS BEAUTIFUL CITY
I
woke up in the morning and found myself admiring the sight of our seven tombs through my window. Then I looked below and saw an autorickshaw driver, who lives in a small tin shed beside our house, doing the same. This sight brought a smile on my lips. No mater what the person’s age, stature, occupation or religion be, he/she has the same reaction when they come face to face with the beauty of their native city. 'People' are definitely a main component of a state. When people of like and humble minds come together, an aura of security, solace and satisfaction appears to form. Beauty can be found in every city, but if you have the right crowd to enjoy it with, that will create the difference between 'viewing' and 'admiring'.

he most inevitable part of the Hyderabadi life is its food. Enough has been written about biryani and kababs, but streets of Hyderabad have more delectable treats to offer with tastes which linger long after you are done eating. Kachi kairi-totapari, malgooba kairi, jam-guavas, bearberries, kala and laal churan are some delicious treats you get from the streets shops. These street foods are a part of every school going kid’s life. You can find without fail a person selling such eatables outside schools. Whenever I take a walk down the memory lane, reminiscing my childhood days, these treats always make for a sweet childhood memory. I am a Hyderabadi so it’s obvious that I like my city. Apart from the city what I hold close to my heart is my kairi. I still remember my school days when my friends and I waited for the home bell to ring so that we can rush to our kairiwaley chacha and grab a kairi with khatti mithi churan. I haven’t had a more tastier kairi and the churan that chacha gave was the best churan I have ever tasted in my life. The combination of tota pari kairi and khatta mitha churan is simply amazing. I might have passed out of school, but every time I pass by my school, I stop at my kairiwaley chacha, say ‘Hi’ and treat myself to khatti mithi churan with tota pari kairi since it is my favourite. Apart from kairi and churan, I am also in love with Gokul Chat khulfi. I dig into a chat khulfi at least twice every week. I don’t know what ingredients he uses to make that khulfi, but I am sure that if anyone challenges me to a khulfi eating competition, I will win hands down.

For the love of chicken
A
s royal as the name sounds, this city is a perfect blend of astounding culture and modernisation where the old and new have intermingled and lived together in harmony for decades. Grandeur, royalty and majesty are the three words which best describe Hyderabad. Not surprisingly enough, the city is well known for it's tehzeeb and how can one forget the world famous 'Hyderabadi Biryani. Biryani — this one dish has been an indelible part of the beautiful memories the City
has given me. No occasion in the City is complete without biriyani. Be it celebration or sorrow, biriyani has always made it's presence felt everywhere. Biriyani can be called as the staple food of the Hyderabadis because the dish more or less defines us. It makes a Hyderabadi complete. Hyderabad offers a variety of places where one can find this lip-smacking gastronomic
delight! For people with iron stomachs and those who want to indulge their taste buds, there is the 'sasurali biryani' which is the spicier version. While for all those poor souls with faint stomachs there is the 'masoom' version of biryani sans the additional spices! Make sure you choose the one which suits your taste buds well, lest you end up with a stomach ache!
UNIQUE
Chicken and mutton biryani are the two variants of this dish which are relished and savoured. The lesser known and our very own chicken biriyani’s not-so-famous cousins include 'qubuli and vegetable biryani’. We, Hyderabadis couldn’t bear to look at them for we need our daily dose of chicken. Well, at the end of the day one can’t help but fall in love with this beautiful City. Hyderabad grows on you and you just can't escape from it's clutches!

he culture of Hyderabad is royal yet highly independent, eclectic almost mesmerizing in all its sense. One never gets fed up of Hyderabadi biriyani. The very mention of the word ‘biriyani’ is enough to make people like me crave for some. People here are known for their hospitality, royalty and their somewhat blunt nature. During summer, evenings are incomplete without mint-infused raw mango drinks while during winters, it is Irani Chai and Osmania biscuits that give us warm and toasty company. The culture of Hyderabad reflects a sense of royalty yet at the same time a varied eccentricity. It’s the city’s unique and inherent style that I’ve eventually learned to love and cherish.
HANA FAROOK CHAI
LOVERS ALL
I
personally think that people of Hyderabad are the biggest connoisseurs of chai in the world. They have their favourites including Irani Chai, Sulemani and Andhra Chai. Also it is during this time that Hyderabadis bond and discuss about the most mundane matters in their lives. There is no specific time for chai. Any time you visit a chaiwala, his bandi will be crowded. They can have it all day and all night. But mind you in spite of the cups of chai one drinks, he can start his day ‘subah subah’ at 10 am.

yderabad is a city, which is unique for its food and language. What makes Hyderabad special is that all types of cuisines are served here. Biriyani, haleem, nehari are some of the most ubiquitous dishes of Hyderabad. It’s like, “Hyderabad aake biryani nai khaye toh bekaar hai.” The best part about Hyderabad is that no matter which restaurant it is, you will always find biryani being served. We have food joints that function till five in the morning and biryani is always on the menu. Another Hyderabadi
IT’S
HYDERABADI THING
thing is that the people of the City can’t live without non-vegetarian food. If there is no non-vegetarian food, they say, “Kya hua ji? Aaj kheench nai banaye tum? Talawa gosht rehta toh maza aajata tha.” Apart from biryani we also have other food joints that serve
South Indian food. There are some bandis that are famous and function throughout the night. And of course, no Hyderabadi meal is complete without the ice cream served at ‘Famous Ice cream’. Now, let us get to the language, Hyderabadi is a unique tongue with exclusive words. When we greet someone we say, “Kaise hai yaaron tum? Dikhrainch nai; kaa gayab hogaye? Tumareku kitta yaad kara mai malum!” I would like to conclude by saying that I’m proud to be a Hyderabadi!

NEVER TOO LATE
have been in this City for the past one year and it has been a wonderful experience getting to know its people. There are many characteristics that are integral to Hyderabadis alone. For instance, when they say they will reach a particular spot in ‘two minutes’, what they are really saying is that ‘they are late and don’t expect them for another hour’. Another thing I have noticed is that people are always in a rush. Mornings are a sight in itself with people trying to get to their offices in time and school students in their uniforms waiting for their buses to arrive. The only times, roads are free are on the Sundays. And you can never get your
work done in a bank or a shop unless you wait in a queue for your chance to come. When it comes to food, ‘diet’ is just a four-letter word for the city’s people. Sweets that Hyderabadis indulge in include double ka meetha, qubani, and sheer korma. Eid, Diwali and Ugadi are some of the biggest festivals celebrated here. People go all out, indulging in sweets, lighting crackers and cooking the most lip-smacking, delicious dishes. All in all, this past one year had been thrilling, joyful ride for me.

THE CITY OF BEAUTY
H
yderabad is a royal City with a striking blend of the old and the new. The city is full of surprises from the lip-smacking food to the majestic monuments, from its terrific landscapes to a populace steeped in respect and tradition. In my 21 years of my life, I have visited the nook and corners of my city. Among all my visits, my trip to Charminar stands out. This monument is really the landmark of the city with four minarets carved with lotus buds and petals and the central structure, soaring to a
ON
height of 180 feet. Next must-visit destination on my list is Hussain Sagar Lake. This is my most favourite spot in the city where I head to if I want to clear my head. Golconda Fort, another must-visit destination in the city is one of the most magnificent complexes standing atop a hill. The trip to the fort is sure to be a thrilling experience. Food is a speciality of Hyderabad especially the mughalai cuisine and Hyderabad biryani. When it
comes to the best restaurant serving the best Hyderabadi biriyani, there is a host of eateries to choose from. Bawarchi, Paradise hotel, Alhamdullilah, Café Bahar, Garden Restaurant are some those with unique and distinct taste and treat for anyone’s taste buds. Last but not the least, “very warm and soft spoken” people here certainly make this City one of the most fascinating cities of India.

THE ROAD
would like to share my views on the typical “Hyderabadi” traffic. The most hilarious happenings occur right on the road. You know you are a Hyderabadi if you stop the traffic with the palm of your hand and cross the road precariously. Next up is the autorickshaw fellows who give you the most-insulting look when you tell them you cannot pay them double the actual fare. They have the look of those who were demanded their kidneys. That is not all, if a minor accident happens on the road, it’s
showtime for many. They leave their chores, sit on bonnets of their cars to enjoy the show never once trying to ease the situation. Another trademark of a Hyderabadi is that they refuse to accept the fact that women can also actually drive. In spite of several women drivers in the city, when driving on the road you get comments like “dekh potti gaadi chalari”. Yes, I am a girl and I can drive and sometimes better than many of you. Now get over it.

harminaar hai iski shaan... Biriyani iski hai maan... Mughlo ki hai aan… Yeh hain Hyderabad meri jaan!!!” I can say that all day long. Hyderabad is one of the few cities in the country which still has remnants of mughalai culture. The City is home to the mighty Charminar, the humongous Golconda fort, the beautiful Buddha statue and last but not the least the mouth-watering biryani! This city has a lot to offer right from the white pearls to the vibrant colourful chudi bazaars, from the rustic old city vibe to the hectic life of Hitech City, from the seven-star hotels

h Garma Garam Chai Chai……”, “Eh tea coffee, tea coffee, tea coffee….,” it was just five in the morning, but my ears echoed with all sorts of weird noises. It took me not more than a minute, to realise that I was in a train heading towards the city of my dreams. For the past three years, I had been waging an unending war with my parents, in an attempt to convince them of my further studies in Hyderabad. For days together I was staring at my PC, searching for the best colleges, hostels, transport and everything and anything that came into my mind. Thanks to ‘Just Dial’, it wasn’t a big task for me. I only had to call the operator and he would be there for me to search for the best in
OF MY DREAMS
Hyderabad. “Never let an auto driver know that you are new to the city”, my friend had said when I told him that I was coming to Hyderabad. So, I stole a few glances of the city from the corner of my eye, but never showed any excitement or anxiety. I felt like I stepped into a new world all alone. I regretted for following my dreams, I regretted all that I have done for the past few days. But now, because of my stupidity, I was stuck in an unknown land all alone. The next day, I walked into my class with trembling hands. I do not know Hindi and the peo-
ple here speak nothing but Hindi. I felt awkward at once. I was about to turn when I found a person hugging me from the back. “Hey! You must be Mounika right? I have been waiting for you for so long.” And before I had an answer she started introducing me to the class. I never knew that friends can be made so easily. I was wonder-struck by the way these people mingle with each other. Here I was not the only new person to the class. The college is new for every one of us. Anyway, I could find a friend in this great city who had started missing me even before meeting me. For a year I have been roam-
ing all around the city with my friends, bunking classes and watching all new releases. Today, I am recalling all those memories, as I had a call from my junior, this morning, asking me to pick him up at the railway station as he is new to the city. “I have an important meeting today, so I may not be able to come. Do one thing; just pretend as if you are not new to the city. Get an auto in the pre-paid counter and come to Ameerpet without showing any excitement or anxiety. My friend shall be meeting you there,” I told him trying to be as casual as a typical Hyderabadi. But deep inside I know what it is to visit the city for the first time without anyone to help you.

Some of the lip-smacking dishes include Talava Gosht of the Prince Hotel, Dum ki Biriyani of the famous Allhamdullilah hotel, shawarma you get at Feel’n Saudi, Kheema roti of the Paradise Hotel. When it comes to desserts, you have Double ka Meetha, Qurbani ka Meetha, Shahi Tukda, Kaddu ka kheer and the list goes on and on. uring the month of Ramzan, various restaurants and fivestar hotels arrange dinners for Iftar (the breaking of the fast after sunset). Because of the day-long fast, the body’s energy source is depleted and that can be replenished at Iftar. Since few years now, the traditional late-night meal spreads offered by restaurants are turning multi-cuisine. In fact, in order to cater to the varied population and an attempt at experimentation, the meal now includes pizzas and chips and burgers as well at several dos in the City. But Vivanta by Taj chooses to do it the traditional way and the setting is quite royal indeed. Apart from it being a religious observance, Iftar is a

celebration of good food, too. Hyderabad knows this just too well. The Iftar meal is better known as a community meal, where the whole family along with friends and relatives break the fast together. Chef Vasu is the man behind the Dastarkhwan we were treated to at Viva. An elegant table laden with the most spectacular looking and tasty food awaited us as we entered Viva. We started with dates, olives and a tantalising glass of tamarind juice, the recipe of which Chef Vasu generously shared. There was orange/apricot juice for those who wanted something different. It is believed that the sugar- and vitamin-rich dates helps the stomach re-adjust to eating. Everything had a touch of royalty and elegance about it, from the vessels used

for serving, to the plating of the food, the bearers, and even the taste. Some of the items that deserve a definite mention were the well-fried seafood garlay (mixture of prawn, crab and fish coated with gramflour) — a la-pakoda style. That was followed by deliciously tender, succulent lamb and chicken salami. Next we were served pattar
ka gosht, paya shorba with sheermal, keema parantha, kaleji keema and the highlights of the meal — haleem and the lamb biryani. The haleem was absolutely spectacular and the biryani will make you go for second helpings. It was quite difficult for us to track what we ate: such was the variety. But what we can say for sure is that it was one, satiating and nourishing meal. Vegetarians can look foward to the paneer tikkas and the vegetable haleem among other things. For dessert, baklavas were the centre of attraction: the sticky sweet confection made of layers of maamoul-short bread pastry filled with nuts and kanafeh, Arabic cheese pastry with vermicelli. Chef Vasu insisted that we be generous with the sugar syrup on the sweets to savour it right. After bidding a silent adieu to weight-watching that week, we dug in, to be pleasantly surprised by the change it brought in the taste. If you are looking to savour some delicious Iftar food, then Viva awaits you. It would be sad if you missed this mesmerising blend of flavours — sweet, savoury and exotic.

Sharman Joshi to play exorcist in 1920 London K
nown for his humorous roles, Sharman Joshi was recently seen in a simple role of a Parsi guy in the movie Ferrari Ki Sawaari. A
ctor Prateik believes that the much-awaited turning point of his life can come with his upcoming release Issaq. “The turning point of my
life hasn’t come yet. If you (audience) help me, then that turning point will come with Issaq,” the 26-year-old said while addressing a young crowd at a college. Prateik, who has earlier featured in films like Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, My Friend Pinto, Aarakshan and Ekk Deewana Tha, was there to promote the film. After the superhit Raanjhanaa, Issaq is also based in Benaras, and Prateik says it is perhaps the flavour of the season. But he insists his film goes “a lot” beyond romance. “You can say that it’s the
flavour of this season. Benaras is the flavour of this season, even romance is. But we are not just bringing romance, there is a lot more,” Prateik, son of Raj Babbar and late actress Smita Patil, said. Directed by Manish Tiwary, “Issaq is a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play Romeo & Juliet. Also featuring Amyra Dastur, Issaq hits theatres July 26.

(and it) will pave a way for lot more Indian artists to come up,” the 30-year-old said here at the launch of the video of Exotic here Friday. Priyanka is excited about her music innings, but she is not completely in favour of changing the Indian film scene, where professional singers playback for actors. “In India, our culture is that we (actors) don’t have to sing in our films. It’s been there and it has been very successful. There have been a lot of actors who have dabbled with singing — Amitabh Bachchan has... so many people have tried it, it’s fun,” Priyanka said.

Couldn’t show Pran Zanjeer remake: Amit Mehra A
mit Mehra, who is remaking his father Prakash Mehra’s hit film Zanjeer, Friday said he was shocked to hear about veteran actor Pran’s death and said it is sad that he won’t be able to show him the latest version of the action thriller. Pran, 93, died at Mumbai’s Leelavati Hospital Friday night and was cremated early Saturday morning. “This is a very sad news. I was very fond of him. I went to meet him before casting someone for the role
played by him in ‘Zanjeer'. He was very happy that Sanjay Dutt did the role. I had promised him to show the film, but unfortunately I couldn’t," Mehra said. Mehra said he wanted Pran to make a guest appearance in the remake, but could not do it due to his health. “I wanted him to come on the set for a small shot, but his health was not permitting. He was not keeping well, so we couldn’t do that," he said. IANS
takes show ouster in her stride
T
V actress Sonarika Bhadoria, who played Parvati in mythological drama show Devon ke Dev Mahadev, says she had put down her papers three months back, but stayed on when producers promised a salary hike. However, she says when the makers failed to fulfil their promise, they sent her a termination mail, forcing her to bow out. But the producers have a different story to tell. “Three months ago I had given a notice that I would be leaving the show as I was getting good offers. I didn’t want to continue playing Parvati," Sonarika said. “But then I had a talk with the head of production. We narrowed down to one thing that is monetary matter. They were willing to give me a good amount of money, so I continued shooting," she added. While she had been promised a hike, there were rumours that
Nikhil Sinha, producer and series director, was planning to replace her with another actress. “When I approached them (producers about the rumours), they asked me to chill. As far as I know, Pooja (Bose) was to play Sita, so I was very confident about it. Hence, I told the media that I am playing Parvati," said Sonarika, who played the character for more than a year. One day she got a call from the head of production saying that the amount that was decided earlier is out of their bud-
get. “He told me that whatever amount was decided, I can’t give that much as it’s out of budget. I felt cheated because they told me at the last moment. I was asked to take a decision whether to continue with the show or not. I asked for some time," she said. “On July 7 late night, I got a termination mail. I had to give my decision by morning. When I woke up, my staff called me and said there was a new girl on the set who had started shooting," she added. The termination mail and replacement news came as a shock for the 20year-old, but she got over it soon. Now she has got a new hair cut and she is spending time with her family and friends. “I feel happy as somewhere down the line I wanted to quit. It’s not that I am devastated. I feel free. When I was acting as Parvati, I didn’t get my hair cut for a year. The first thing I did after I got the news was visit a spa and then get a new hair cut. Now, I have fringes, which I really wanted," said Sonarika. Post the incident, she is neither bitter, nor does she hold any grudge against the show producer or the channel. She won’t mind taking up TV assignments as long as they are interesting, but her focus right now is films. A dance reality show would also work as she loves dancing. IANS

Jeff Arnett, a spokesperson for the Barrington 220 School District, confirmed that the pop star’s management had been in communication with school officials and had been planning the donation since March. “The money will go to purchase new equipment for the students to use," Arnett explained. He also added that RiRi’s staff was always very pleasant to work with throughout the entire experience. On March 22, the singer performed a brief concert for the school as a grand prize
for winning her “Shine Bright Like a Diamond” contest, in which Barrington High School students in the television department produced a video that highlighted their involvement with charitable organizations. The huge check seemed to be icing on the cake for the school. But with the good there’s oftentimes the bad. Rihanna caused a stir of controversy when she arrived four hours late for the school visit. Students waited anxiously for the singer to arrive while being offered free concert tickets and signed merchandise in an attempt to smooth things over. School officials, however, are focusing on the singer’s mea culpa and charitable efforts.

Park ahead in Toronto TORONTO: Park Hee-young, who is coming off a missed cut at the US Women’s Open, shot a 10under 61 to take the lead in the third round of the Manulife Financial Classic. South Korea’s Park is at 20under par 193 and has a slim oneshot lead heading into Sunday’s final round of the LPGA Tour event at the Grey Silo Golf Course. Park is just the 11th player in LPGA history to shoot a 61. “I didn’t realize it,” Park said. “My long putting was pretty awesome. I just tried to trust it.” American Angela Stanford, who is aiming for her sixth LPGA Tour win, remained in second place with a third-round 64. Stanford is 19-under-par 194, one shot ahead of Scotland’s Catriona Matthew, who shot 68 and fell into third place at 18under. Meena Lee (65) is alone in fourth at 17-under, while Swede Anna Nordqvist (67) rounds out the top five at 15-under. Gerina Piller, of the US, fired a 62 and vaulted into a tie for sixth at 14-under. She is level with South Korea’s Amy Yang (66) and American Austin Ernst (67). World number one Park Inbee, the winner of the last three LPGA events, shot 68. Park, who also won the first three majors of 2013, is tied for ninth place with Norway’s Suzann Pettersen (68) at minusAFP 13.
SILVIS: Daniel Summerhays, who is seeking his first PGA Tour win, fired a nine-under-par 62 on Saturday to grab a two-shot lead after the third round of the John Deere Classic. Canada’s David Hearn shot 64 and moved into second place at 17under, while defending champion Zach Johnson, of the US, dropped into third at minus-16 as the field heads into Sunday’s final round. The 29-year-old Summerhays shot a career low round Saturday and is 19-under 194 through 54 holes at TPC Deere Run. American Summerhays missed three consecutive cuts before tying for ninth at
last week’s Greenbrier Classic. Summerhays rolled in 10 birdies while matching the lowest third-round score in event history. “I think when I’m playing well the mentality is make as many birdies as you can,” Summerhays said. “I’m really looking forward to (Sunday). I’m playing really well.” J.J. Henry (65) and Jerry Kelly (66) are tied for fourth at 15-under, one shot in front of Nicholas Thompson (64), Chris Kirk (66) and Matt Jones (68). Summerhays has been on a hot streak all week at the Deere Run course. “I know there’s going to be obstacles and challenges, as there
always are. There are always things that stand in your way. But I’m just excited to see what those are and deal with them,” Summerhays said. Hearn closed with three birdies in four holes to get within two strokes of Summerhays. Johnson drained a 60-foot putt for an eagle on No. 2 but made bogey on the par-four No. 6 and the par-four 11th hole. Johnson says he is confident heading into the fourth round. “I certainly think there were a lot more positives out there than negatives,” Johnson said. “My putter has been great. Even the ones AFP I’ve missed have been great.”
Eelbow won’t be an issue: Woods LOS ANGELES: Tiger Woods (right) said on Saturday that he was ready for the British Open and an elbow injury won’t be a problem when the year’s third major championship starts Thursday at Muirfield. “I started chipping and putting a little over a week ago and I’m full go for the British Open,” said Woods on his website. “I’m very confident that my left elbow strain won’t be a problem and I will be

was still taking anti-inflammatory medication and getting treatment for the injury. “The big thing at Muirfield Golf Club will be to avoid the rough,” he added. World number one Woods fought through the elbow pain during the US Open last month, but he finished the tournament 13 over par and 12 shots adrift of winner Justin Rose. In 16 appearances in the event it marked the 14-time major winner’s worst finish. AFP
Phil looks to end drought CASTLE STUART: Phil Mickelson is just one round away from ending a 20-year European winless drought after moving to within two shots of the lead on the third day of the Scottish Open. Mickelson joined tournament leader, Henrik Stenson in signing for a six under par 66 and end the round in a four-way share of second place on 14-under par and just two shots behind Stenson. Stenson, 36, picked up seven birdies as he strives to win for the first time this year after being runner-up in April’s Houston Open. “I’m in a good spot at the moment and it would be the icing on the cake if I were to win tomorrow going into next week’s Open,” said Stenson. The four-time major winning Mickelson, who is
the highest ranked player in the field at number eight in the world, parred his opening seven holes before completing the last 11 in six under par, including grabbing three birdies in succession from the ninth hole on the Castle Stuart course. Mickelson has 46 victories to his credit but just one victory in Europe and that was in 1993 in capturing a secondary Challenge Tour event near Euro Disney in France. “Any victory over here would be terrific but then we are getting ahead of ourselves,” said Mickelson. “There’s a packed leaderboard and it will take one good round of a shootout between 15 or 20 guys that are right there. I’m playing well and it feels terrific. I would love to win here in the UK especially
on a links golf course.” Mickelson shares second place with South African Branden Grace (66), Denmark’s JB Hansen (69) and England’s John Parry (66). Northern Ireland’s Gareth Maybin produced the lowest round of the day with an eight under par 64 to be tied in sixth place on 13-under par with Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin (65) and American Peter Uihlein (70). While Stenson, Mickelson and Grace are already exempt into the British Open, Hansen, Parry, Maybin, Jacquelin and Uihlein will be seeking to secure victory that would see them also qualify. Twenty-two players will go into the final round lying within six shots off the lead. AFP
Rain washes out semis
NEWPORT: Rain washed out both semi-final matches at the ATP Tour’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships on Saturday. Nicolas Mahut and Michael Russell played just three points in their semi-final contest before the downpour suspended play on the grass courts in the $520,000 event. Mahut and Russell will resume their match Sunday morning on court one, while the second semi between two-time reigning champion John Isner and former world number one Lleyton Hewitt will be played at the same time on center court. After the completion of the semi-finals, there will be a break before the final begins in the afternoon at the International Tennis Hall of Fame facility. The winner of the tournament will take home $78,000 in AFP prize money.

ASHES 2013
England are on the brink of winning the first Test after more umpiring controversy dogged the Ashes series.
England edge closer to victory
Agar holds Oz’s hopes Australia’s newspapers are hoping that debutant Ashton Agar can replicate his record-breaking first Test innings and guide his team to victory in the fluctuating first Ashes Test against England. Commentators pointed to the 19-year-old rookie as Australia’s unlikely saviour after his amazing debut knock of 98 batting at number 11.

NOTTINGHAM: England were on the brink of winning the first Test against Australia after more umpiring controversy dogged the Ashes series opener at Trent Bridge on Saturday. Australia were 174 for six at stumps on the fourth day, still needing a further 137 runs to reach their victory target of 311 after they lost three wickets for three runs late in the day. No side has made more to win in the fourth innings of a Trent Bridge Test than England’s 284 for six against New Zealand in 2004. But the fact teenage debutant Ashton Agar, who in Australia’s first innings made 98, the highest score by a Test No 11, was still there was a warning to Ashes-holders England they had work left to do if they were to go 1-0 up in this five-match series. Brad Haddin was 11 not out and Agar, promoted to No.8, one not out. “You never know what is going to happen in this game,” Clarke told BBC Radio’s Test Match Special after stumps.
AUSTRALIA WERE 174 FOR SIX AT STUMPS ON THE FOURTH DAY, STILL NEEDING A FURTHER 137 RUNS TO REACH THEIR VICTORY TARGET OF 311. “We need Ashton Agar to play the type of innings he played in the first dig. Brad Haddin looks solid too. “The wicket is dead but the ball is reverse-swinging. We need to start well tomorrow (Sunday) morning and think positively,” added star batsman Clarke, whose fall for 23 late on Saturday sparked a slump that saw Australia decline from 161 for three to 164 for six in the space of 18 balls. England captured the prize scalp of Clarke when Stuart Broad, himself at the centre of an umpiring row on Friday, had him caught by wicketkeeper Matt Prior for 23 off an excel-
lent full-length delivery. Pakistan’s Aleem Dar, the bowler’s end umpire, checked with square leg colleague Kumar Dharmasena to see if the ball had carried. However, the Sri Lankan was unable to give that confirmation and the on-field duo referred the decision to third umpire Marais Erasmus. Replays showed clearly that Prior had taken a clean catch and Clarke was given out by Dar. But the batsman immediately challenged the decision. Again the verdict was passed to South Africa’s Erasmus and, with Hot Spot technology showing the ball had nicked the bat, Dar once more raised his finger. Australia had now used up all their reviews and next ball Steven Smith was lbw to Graeme Swann as the off-spinner, like Broad bowling on his Nottinghamshire home ground, extracted sharp turn. Left-hander Phil Hughes, playing back to another sharply spun Swann delivery, was initially given not out on nought AFP by Dharmasena.
Clarke insists Oz can stage escape NOTTINGHAM: Australia captain Michael Clarke (right) said his side had it in them to complete one of the great Ashes comebacks after England ended the fourth day of the first Test poised for victory. The tourists were 174 for six at Trent Bridge come Saturday’s close, still needing a further 137 runs on Sunday’s final day with just four wickets standing to go 1-0 up in this five-match series
against Ashes-holders England. Shortly before stumps, Australia lost three wickets for three runs with Clarke’s exit for 23 sparking the slump. However, debutant Ashton Agar was still there on one not out after being promoted from last man to No 8 following his first innings 98 — the highest score by a Test No 11. “Ashton showed in the first innings he’s got plenty of talent and with the experience of Brad
Haddin (11 not out) and the other players that are left to bat, I think we can give it a real shake,” said Clarke. Clarke is just one of three survivors, along with England’s Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell, from the celebrated 2005 Ashes Test at Edgbaston when Australia, who ended the third day on 175 for eight chasing 282, got within a hit of victory before England squeezed home by two runs.

POSTNOON PREDICTS The first Test being played at Trent Bridge has been a perfect case of fluctuating fortunes. England failed to make an impact in their first innings and it seemed Australia were following the same path until Ashton Agar’s knock stole the show from the hosts. But England, who came back strong after Bell’s century, continued to impress with the ball and reduced Australia to 174 for 6 on the Day 4. With a whole day’s play left and on a deteriorating wicket, England look to be the favourites to win the match, needing only four wickets to clinch the game.
It has come to my attention that a fake Twitter account in my name has been making comments regarding the Stuart Broad catch in the first Test. I am concerned that some overseas media organisations have attributed these quotes to me. Adam Gilchrist, Former Aussie player

Aspas bags debut goal for Liverpool
LONDON: Liverpool’s new Spanish striker Iago Aspas marked his debut with a goal in Saturday’s 4-0 friendly win over Preston at Deepdale. Aspas signed from Celta Vigo for £7.7 million ($11.6 million, 8.9 million euros) during the close-season and he gave a glimpse of why Reds manager
Brendan Rodgers was so keen to land him with a fine secondhalf strike against the League One side. He curled home Liverpool’s final goal as they eased their way back into action in their opening warm-up, a fixture organised in honour of Reds’ legendary manager and former
Lilywhites player Bill Shankly. “Iago works hard, he’s got a trick in and around the box and he excites supporters,” said Rodgers. “He’s a good guy and he works very hard for the supporters. “He drifts well in between the lines and always wants to receive the ball, but what I like
France clinch U-20 World Cup title

ISTANBUL: France clinched their maiden under-20 World Cup title on Saturday after defeating Uruguay 4-1 on penalties following a goalless draw in Istanbul. Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola was the hero for France as he saved spotkicks from Emiliano Velazquez and Giorgian De Arrascaeta in the shootout before Dimitri Foulquier swept the winning penalty beyond Uruguay’s Guillermo De Amores. Both ‘keepers were
instrumental in sending the game to extra time, and latterly penalties, with Areola making crucial stops to deny Nicolas Lopez and Felipe Avenatti during the regulation 90 minutes, while De Amores produced two sharp saves to keep out Jordan Veretout and Alexy Bosetti in the closing stages of normal time. Earlier, Ghana secured third place after beating Iraq 3-0 with goals from Joseph Attamah, Ebenezer Assifuah and Frank Acheampong. AFP
Norwich sign Leroy Fer LONDON: Norwich manager Chris Hughton continued his pre-season spending spree as the Premier League club signed Holland midfielder Leroy Fer from FC Twente on Saturday. Fer’s move to Carrow Road on a four-year contract is believed to have cost Norwich around £4.5 million ($6.8 million, 5.2 million euros). The club’s official Twitter feed read: “City can confirm Dutch international midfielder Leroy Fer has joined from FC Twente on a 4-year deal, subject to

Dyke aims to solve England’s problems LONDON: Greg Dyke, the English Football Association’s new chairman, on Saturday claimed he is determined to fix the “problems” hindering England’s national teams.
