Inside, the Assembly witnessed the same turmoil it has been facing for the past five days. Immediately after the gong for fall-in sounded,
Opposition parties — TDP, TRS, BJP, CPI — pressed for their agendas. The most urgent agenda all Opposition parties supported was a resolution backing a separate T-state. As the Speaker rejected them all, the opposition members rushed to the podium and made a ring raising slogans against the government. Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy witnessed the proceedings in silence. Sources said attempts were made by some Congress leaders yesterday to persuade opposition leader Chandrababu Naidu to take initiative in bringing a minimum co-operation among the opposition parties so that the Assembly could function. However, Naidu did not heed the request.

EDUCATION
Moulding citizens of tomorrow The Vandemataram foundation has been on a drive to fight poverty, illiteracy and discrimination through their social outreach initiatives in hundreds of schools in Warangal and Mahbubnagar. PADMINI C padmini.c@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: “Vandemataram is not an NGO, it’s a movement, a revolution,” says T Ravinder, introducing the foundation which is slowly but steadily transforming public education in villages and mandals across AP. The foundation commenced operations in 2005, on the eve of the centenary celebrations of the national song, Vande Mataram. Inspired by the teachings and philosophies of Vivekananda and APJ Abdul Kalam, the twelveman team and 11,000 groundlevel volunteers, have been working towards igniting young minds so they can lay the foundation for a better tomorrow. “If we are able to successfully mould a classroom in a school today, we can mould the shape of the world,” believes journalist-turned-activist Ravinder, who’s the founder-trustee of the community
development organisation. Keeping true to their motto, the foundation has been on a drive to fight poverty, illiteracy and discrimination through their unique social outreach initiatives in hundreds of schools in Warangal and Mahbubnagar. The results are already showing — drop rates have fallen sharply, teacher absenteeism has slumped and student performance has improved drastically, in more than 120 schools in 10 mandals.
Recognising the problem of high-dropout rates among girls after high school, the foundation has adopted 600 girl children from these mandals, bearing all costs (including their bus pass, admission, tuition fees, study material) for their higher education. In return, these girls have an undertaking to return to their villages in the evening and conduct mentoring classes. Another successful initiative of the organisation is their ‘Little

Not only does stress take a toll on our health but it also affects our skin immensely. In an attempt to help one rejuvenate and give life to one’s skin, Park Hyatt, Hyderabad, is introducing two new therapies to their spa. which lasts for a longer time by the use of Jessica Nail Cultivation System Products. Dr Mamtha Ismail, manager at Park Hyatt’s Spa, will be explaining its benefits. Park Hyatt is the only hotel in the country to offer the treatments. The Hydra Facial is designed in a way that it restores and maintains skin health with immediate visible results. It starts with deep cleansing and gentle exfoliation of the skin followed by painless extractions, and ends with a burst of hydration. “We are glad to have collaborated with Park Hyatt Hyderabad’s signature Spa for the second time. The Hydra Facial’s demand has been increasing and people are experiencing a new feel of their skin,” says Sachdev. Gel-ration is branded as being “the most sophisticated soak-off manicure and pedicure service available today”. “The gel-ration manicure is a great solution for people who can’t find time more than once a month to go for a manicure. It is a long-lasting formula that lasts for about 30days and is ideal for a working woman.” says Dr Ismail. The workshop will be conducted on June 15 at The Spa, Park Hyatt, between 3.30pm and 5pm. Attendees can take appointment by calling +91 49491481.
Leaders’ programme aimed to help orphans and children of single-parents who constitute a majority of the student body in government schools. In the absence of established libraries, these kids serve as mobile libraries by carrying to school story books, moral studies tomes or any good literature provided by the foundation and make them available to the rest of their class. In the evening, they pack them up and bring them back. In turn, these children are rewarded by having a nominal amount of money added to their account for their future education. “Every person we help will help two in return. It will be a chain reaction so that everyone is affected,” the members say. Despite a monthly expenditure of `4-5 lakh, the foundation says that they will not accept a rupee of government funding. scious businessmen from the City who shared its vision. “About 50-60 of us came together and wanted to help. So we started setting aside `1-2 lakh every year and giving it to support the foundation,” says Madhav Reddy, now the State secretary for Vandemataram. Recently, they have companies coming forward to sponsor programmes. But they’re still only getting warmed up. Ahead they have clear development plan and specified goals. “We want to make Dr Kalam’s 2020 vision come true. Our aim is to create at least 1,00,000 responsible citizens in the country who will work towards change. And we intend to touch 1,000 government schools across the State. If we can achieve that, we can achieve full social justice,” explains Ravinder.

Migrants to outnumber Goans by ‘21 PANAJI: Goa is virtually standing on the brink of “ethnic dilution” as unrestricted migration from other states is threatening to reduce the native population to an “alienated microscopic minority” by 2021, according to an assessment by the state government. “Unrestricted migration and whole-scale transfer of land is beginning to submerge the unique Goan identity. Though we have been noticing this trend in the last decade or so, it has now assumed menacing proportions. The apprehension is that by 2021 the migrant population will outnumber local Goans”. This apprehension was expressed by an all-party delegation, led by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, which met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Delhi last evening. Underlining the gradual influx of migrants who are settling down in the coastal state, a hot tourist destination, the memorandum submitted to the prime minister rued that cosmopolitan character of the state has been grossly misunderstood. TOKYO: Three Chinese government ships sailed into waters around disputed islands controlled by Tokyo on Friday, for the first time since late May, Japan’s coastguard said. The Chinese maritime surveillance vessels were spotted inside the 12-nautical-mile zone off the Senkaku islands, which China calls the Diaoyus.
NEW YORK: News Corp chief Rupert Murdoch filed papers to divorce his third wife Wendi Deng, citing an “irretrievably” broken marriage to a woman 38 years his junior. The media tycoon’s Chineseborn partner is perhaps best known for a 2011 incident when she leapt to defend her husband by striking a pie-wielding protester.
HANOI: A prominent Vietnamese blogger has been arrested for antistate activity, reports said Friday, the second online government critic detained in less than a month. ANKARA: Turkish protest leaders held emergency talks with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan overnight after demonstrators rejected his "last warning" to evacuate an Istanbul park at the centre of mass anti-government demos. With tensions mounting, Taksim Solidarity representatives travelled to the capital Ankara for late-night talks with Erdogan, their first since the unrest began. Local television showed around a dozen members entering the premier's residence. Earlier, Erdogan had taken a combative stance against the protesters at Gezi Park who have put up the biggest challenge yet to the decade-long rule of his Justice and Development Party (AKP). "I'm making my last warning: mothers, fathers please withdraw your kids from there," he said in a live television broadcast. "Gezi Park does not belong to occupying forces. It belongs to everybody."
Even as the talks got underway, police fired tear gas at around 200 protesters gathered in Ankara city centre, not far from Erdogan's offices, witnesses told AFP. They used water cannon to break up the gathering and arrested five demonstrators.
An AKP spokesman said the government would do nothing to the park until a referendum they had promised on its future takes place. After the talks, which lasted several hours, AKP spokesman Huseyin Celik insisted the government would do nothing to the park until a referendum they had promised on its future had taken place. The authorities were also waiting for the courts to rule on a move by objectors to block their development plan, Celik added. AFP

China’s First Lady of fashion Would Peng's championing of a domestic fashion label in the midst of a government "frugality" drive send a message to top officials' wives to ditch the bling?
WASHINGTON: The United States has launched a criminal investigation and is taking "all necessary steps" to prosecute Edward Snowden for exposing secret US surveillance programs, the FBI director said Thursday. Was this Exception's "Jason Wu moment"? people asked, referring to the young Taiwanese-Canadian designer who shot to fame after Michelle Obama dazzled at the first inaugural ball in an ivory one-shoulder Wu creation. Peng, a star in China for over three decades, has been wearing Exception for 12 years and some clothes were specially designed for her, Mao told AFP in an interview in Paris. And while the publicity surrounding her choice of an

The spirit of young blood Youngsters are stepping forward to donate blood and arrange blood camps in the City.
KANCHAN AGARWAL kanchan.a@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: A large number of youngsters in the City are consciously and voluntarily donating

(youngsters) now understand the importance of voluntary blood donation. Besides, there is an evident spirit to do some good for the society,” he says. Out of his database of 1,00,000 donors, a whopping 60 per cent are in the age group of 18-35 years. “In the last two years, every youngster I have come across has responded to a blood requirement. They show interest in participating and organising blood camps,” he elaborates. Other blood banks such as Chiranjeevi, Social Service and Red Cross, too have good figures. Chiranjeevi gets about 200 donors in each of their blood camps held at colleges every three months. Social Service blood bank had 2,800 donors from nine camps last year, of which 60 per cent were youngsters. Red Cross collected 412
units at a camp at CVR College of Engineering. While all this is good, there are always a few challenges to be met. Certain blood groups are hard to find. “Negative blood groups are not easily available. These are rare, plus people of this category are advised to not donate for free,” says chief medical officer of Chiranjeevi Blood Bank. Then there is the matter of AROUND THE

misconceptions. “I am often asked if donating blood will make them weak. People wonder if the needles are fresh, and they worry if their blood will be sold. One has to be patient and explain what is what to them. Once they understand, they can become lifelong
donors,” says Dr Kodak Jagadish, medical officer at Red Cross. Nivedita N, 26, has donated blood at every opportunity since her college days. “The motivating factor is that it can save a life but I have noticed that each donation makes you even healthier.” Chandrasekhar Reddy, president of Social Service blood bank lists the eligibility criteria. “You should be above 18 years of age, and must weigh more than 45 kg. There should have been no intake of alcohol at least 24 hours before. If you have had surgery, typhoid and delivery, you have to wait a year. If you had a vaccination or a tattoo done, you can’t donate for six months. If you have had an abortion, it will be eight months before you can donate. People with skin problems, asthma, liver and heart issues can avoid blood donation.”

any took him earlier to be a shy introvert, not eager to hog the headlines. The media repulsed him. He was indeed all these as MLA and Speaker. But his detractors seem to forget that as a Virgo, he has a shrewd mind and a revengeful mentality that gives him ideas for the knockout punch. During the recent Cabinet meeting, the CM’s Cabinet colleagues Botsa Satyanarayana and K Jana Reddy, who are known to be his worst critics, tried to corner him on the issue of his pet programme, Bangaru Talli scheme, which is aimed at providing handsome benefits to the girl child of poor families. Both the leaders opined that the scheme required debate and deliberation before its implementation. They also made jibes at the CM’s bid to make a legislation for the scheme without forming a Cabinet sub-committee to go deeper into the implications of the scheme. The CM bowed to the wisdom of the two senior colleagues and the duo came out nodding in happiness of having bearded the lion in its den. Little did they know what was in store. When the Cabinet sub-committee was formed, both the worthies found themselves not in the committee as they expected but it was filled with the CM loyalists! Moral of the story: Never underestimate your rival. IA

METHOD IN MADNESS
Postnoon lensman Srinivas Setty snapped a picture on the stretch between Jubilee check post and Peddamma temple along Road No 36 of Jubilee Hills where municipal contractors were busy changing grass carpets laid on the road divider margin only a while ago. Don’t mistake it for an earnest job. It is done periodically to ‘earn easy funds’ of which we are sure of the complicity of civic officials in-charge of this nuisance. These readymade grass carpets, an invention of urban builders, are highly mobile and easily installable and replaceable. A fat bill awaits the corporation on account of this, which is finally paid by the taxpayers of this City. It is a pity nobody challenges this mad but methodical work to mulct the public. SS
K Dhananjaya Reddy from GHMC, there are rumours that three additional commissioners serving other wings have placed their bids. The position being vacated after almost a decade has been the target of many officials, but only the most influential can hold it. The Planning wing is considered the most lucrative among civic wings, a goose laying golden eggs. After the transfer was made public, several who put hopes on the post could be seen making rounds of the GHMC office (fifth floor). Meanwhile, one IAS officer was reportedly offered the post but he refused to take up the task that needs the wits of a bureaucrat and the shrewdness of a
politician — and a hardened conscience. MN

STOP RIGHT THERE!
The traffic police in the City have been on an overdrive recently, hauling over unsuspecting commuters for a variety of reasons. Those passers-by along the Nagarjuna Circle junction bore the brunt last week with the signals on all roads conked off. Passengers with their typical enthusiasm jumped at the chance of racing away in all directions with no care for safety. But it was the traffic police in the area who took the cake, for standing at corners issuing challans and collecting fines instead of actually taking charge directing the traffic until almost two days later, when predictably, after their targets had been reached. Is it any wonder then that Hyderabad is considered to be the worst city to drive in the country? Much to their dismay, the letter gets stuck on a car’s windshield and before they know it, the car speeds away. Gopal: We lost it Venu. What do we do now? Venu: (In tears) I don’t know. The new breed of filmmakers seem to have found the right formula, which explains the overwhelming response for recent hits like Gunde Jaari Gallanthayindhe, Prema Katha Chitram.
T
elugu film industry seems to be welcoming new filmmakers with open arms these days. Over the past few months, there has been there has been a huge influx of young filmmakers who are eager to tell their stories within a limited budget and that has in turn caught the attention of quite a few producers and top actors. In recent times, filmmakers like Maruthi, Sudheer Varma, Vijay Kumar Konda have made a big splash at box-office and all of a sudden, the number of films under production has increased dramatically. Armed with Canon 5D cameras, less characters and a story targeted at the youth, some of the filmmakers like Maruthi and Sudheer Varma seem to have found a perfect combination of everything to make a killing at box-office. The only downside of this new trend is that nearly every entertainer these days is a love story with a heavy dose of male chauvinism. Perhaps, it wouldn’t be too long before this genre loses its sheen and already, one can see it coming. Everytime, someone delivers a hit, it inspires scores of others to follow similar path. It remains to be seen what’s next in store for us.

Wind farms on D-Day sites fan controversy CHLOE COUPEAU Agence France-Presse
A
French plan to set up wind turbines near the site of the D-Day landings that changed the course of World War II has enraged many who say it desecrates the memory of the liberators. The proposed wind park off the Normandy coast involves 75 windmills, each 100 metres (300 feet) high, and will span the areas where British and Canadian forces landed in 1944. The closest windmills will be only about 10 kilometres (six miles) from shore. The project, being led by state electricity provider EDF, is part of a strategy to use renewable energy to account for almost a quarter of France’s needs by around 2030. Meetings are being held across Normandy to discuss the thorny issue. They are being conducted in both English and French — the latest held Wednesday at Arromanches-les-Bains, where the British soldiers landed. “These beaches belong to history. It’s from here that the liberation of the world began. If you allow the comparison, I don’t think the Germans would permit the construction of a wind park next to the ruins of a concentration camp. These are sacred areas,” said Karel Scheerlinck, a Belgian who lives in the town. Claude Brevan, the head of a commission organising the meetings, said the wind park would span an area from Arromanches-les-Bains to the nearby fishing port of Courselles, where Canadian soldiers fought their way ashore. American landing sites would not be affected, she said.

TEN-YEAR-OLDS TAKE A CUE FROM MANDELA THE INSIDE STORY Susan Njanji
B
reathlessly, the 10year-olds at Rosebank Primary School in Johannesburg clamour to explain all about Nelson Mandela’s life. For them, Mandela is the hero they love but never knew — as he is for the kids who this week have delivered cards, flowers and get-well messages to his Johannesburg home a short distance away as the 94year-old icon of the struggle against apartheid fights a recurrent lung infection in hospital. Madiba — as he is affectionately known in South Africa — retreated from public office in the decade before these children were born. But they quickly go deep into details of his life, not forgetting to translate Mandela’s Xhosa name, Rolihlahla — which colloquially means “troublemaker”. Even if he came from a poor family, they are proud that Mandela caused enough trouble to end white-minority rule and became the father of the “Rainbow Nation”. He was so “poor that his father cut his own trousers so he can wear it on his first day to
school,” said Junior Luthuli, 10, during break time. “And the (pair of) trousers was big, and he didn’t have a belt, so his father used a string to tie it,” interjected classmate Sibusiso Ncube, also 10. South African children start to learn about “Tata”, or father Mandela, as early as pre-school. By primary school Mandela is firmly on the syllabus along with lessons about Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi, both offered as examples of good leadership. Images of Mandela feature prominently in social science and history textbooks. South African children are supposed to be taught about the American political system when the subject of democracy is first introduced in primary schools, but teachers find that irrelevant. “These children need to know about their own history first, about Mandela, about (his apartheid predecessor and negotiating counterpart FW) De Klerk, before we start teaching them of other countries,” said history teacher Mia Flourentzou. Meanwhile the pupils eagerly await their turn to speak about Mandela. “I have heard he has problems with his lungs. I feel sad because I don’t want him to go away. He has done a lot for this country and he deserves the best,” said Refiloo Mtheya.
In a few minutes she retells Mandela’s life story from the day he was born to him voting in the 1994 elections that ushered him in as South Africa’s first black president. “Mandela is important because he stopped apartheid. If he had not done that I probably would not have been in this school,” said Luthuli, who commutes from the predominantly black Soweto township to school in a suburb of Johannesburg. “I just want to be like him, I don’t want to be corrupt like some people.” The children may not understand what it is like to be in a jail, but they certainly know it was tough for Mandela to spend 27 years in apartheid prisons. “South Africans are trying to
push Mandela to go up to 100 years because he spent a lot of his life on Robben Island,” said Masiko Dlamini, daughter of an expatriate Swazi lawyer. “Mandela has made this a beautiful country. There is no more white rule because of him. If it wasn’t because of him, I wouldn’t be here, I wouldn’t have seen South Africa because I am from Swaziland,” said Dlamini. Ncube, who recounted the story of Mandela’s trousers, says the former president is his role model. “He is very brave, he fought for freedom and he wasn’t scared of anything, he fought against HIV/AIDS. And I am scared that if he dies maybe apartheid will come back.”
EDITORIAL BORROW IN RUPEES AND PAY IN DOLLARS
W
ill the fall in the value of the Indian rupee along with decreased scholarships in US varsities see lesser students from Andhra Pradesh pursuing their dream education in the US? The question is pertinent as over half of the students who make it to the US for higher education in the yearly two lakh students are from Andhra Pradesh. This could also partly be the reason for why a Telugu name invariably figures in crime against Indian students in the US. Like ambitious parents from Gujarat and Punjab, Andhra couples are worried about the steep increase in the fees for their wards this year; unexpected on their budget plans like the fluctuating gold rate for a daughter’s wedding.
READERS’ VIEWS
The plummeting rupee will also burden these aspirants with additional expenses on lodging, boarding and travel. August is when Indian students throng US universities. A 10 per cent burden imposed by way of the falling rupee has only added to their worry of the 10 per cent increase in tuition fees since last year. The better the university, the higher is the increase, and stricter the bank terms. The failing rupee in the last one-and-a-half months has also affected students into their odd or even semesters dependent on varying rates of bank interest. Those who have just completed the course and entered their first job are the ones positively impacted — the burden reduces as they pay back their bank loans in dollars!

many stand-alone buildings and very few high-rise apartments,” Available land is very less and insufficient for development of gated communities. Talking about the demand and supply ratio, he says, “A decent gated community needs around seven acres of land, which is not easily available in these localities. The mismatch in demand supply ratio is adding to the increased value of this locality. However, the real estate downturn in the City has also affected this place in terms of value. The growth in the past was not up to our expectations. But, the scenario is getting better of late with real estate getting back on track,” Many think the place, which is at a peak in terms of value will not see any further price rise. However, executive vice-president of APREDA, R Chalapathi Rao, disagrees with this. He says, “It is a myth that a developed locality doesn’t have price

builder along, and the locality,” adds Rao. In terms of location, this area acts as a bridge between the central City and the IT hub. Every brand wants to be present here to attract customers. Major film studios, media houses, publishing companies, real estate developers all choose this area to have their office in. This also adds to the brand value of the company along with better accessibility to customers. “Rentals are as high as `120 per sft, whereas traditional retail hubs like Basheerbagh command only `60-70 per sft,” revealed G Hari Babu, chairman, Lahari Group. any say that there is no demand for commercial space in Hyderabad and the rental values are stagnant. That is not true in any terms. Existing companies are expanding their operations by absorbing more space. The overall experience that they are having by being here in the City is driving them to lease out more space. Undoubtedly, the quality of infrastructure here is better than in many cities. There is rich talent available and the attrition rate is much lower as compared to other cities. Low cost of living and reasonable rental compared to other IT hubs in the country, are other advantages with Hyderabad. Clearly, IT companies have benefited with their presence in Hyderabad. However, there are no new companies that are stepping into the City. They are hesitant while choosing Hyderabad over other cities due to the political uncertainty in the State. The question they ask is why we should go to Hyderabad when there are other cities offering similar spaces but without the drama. Over all, a section of the corporate wants to expand here but there is the other section that is hesitant. Another view is that office rentals have not gone up. cent in some micro markets in the last 12 months. For instance, there has been a sharp increase in areas like Hitec City and other IT-dominant areas. Actually the supply of office space is less compared to the demand, which is giving a push to the rental value. The demand for office space will be around 4mn-sft this year, which is very much in line with that in Pune. As far as the residential real estate is concerned, the pricing is low compared to other cities. The other cities have gone much ahead of Hyderabad in terms of property values and rentals. For example, considering peak prices in the third quarter of 2008 as 100 points, the capital values in Mumbai have gone up from 74 points to 174 points. Hyderabad ranks the lowest in terms of growth in capital values. This benefits buyers and tenants and keeps the cost of living low in the City. However, on the developers’ front, it is a tough situation. If the previous peak was 100 (third quarter of 2008) it only added 18 points to move to 118 points after five years. Due to these values, there is still good response from buyers for bookings for properties that are priced below `50 lakh. In the office space segment, none of the cities revived the peak price of the third quarter in 2008. The same also applies to the retail. UNDERSTANDING YOUR HEART: PART V

Listen to your heart?
Do you think you cannot get a heart attack if you’re young? Do you wait for symptoms of blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes before going for a medical check-up? Here are some myths related to the heart debunked.
1
MYTH: Young people won’t get heart attack. FACT IS: Research suggests that 40 per cent of patients who die of heart attack are below 50 years of age. This trend is on the rise due to lifestyle changes over the last few decades, mainly reduced physical activity and disturbed sleep patterns. Additionally, improper diet and tobacco smoking increase the risk of heart attacks. It is important to avoid a sedentary lifestyle and be physically active.
2
MYTH: Children do not get heart diseases. FACT IS: It can affect people at any age. Congenital heart disease is a birth defect in children. Medline Plus defines it as the leading cause of death during the first year of birth than any other birth defect. Moreover, according to USA Today, overweight and unhealthy lifestyle that affects adults can also put strain on the hearts of children. It also put these children at a risk of developing heart ailments in early adulthood.
3
MYTH: You shouldn’t exercise if you have heart disease. FACT IS: Unless you have a chronic heart ailment, where you need to be under proper supervision while exercising, experts advise at least 10 to 20 minutes of physical exercise for heart patients. According to WebMd, it reduces the recurrence of attacks. And in those who lead a sedentary lifestyle, at least 20 minutes of exercise is recommended to avoid early onset of heart ailments.

DID YOU KNOW?
MYTH: I don’t need a BP/cholesterol check up because I don’t have any symptoms. FACT IS: Doctors recommend regular check-ups for diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol. Blood pressure and hypertension are called “silent killers”. The symptoms will not show and you may never know you have it until you get a test done. Similarly, though cholesterol is associated with obesity, it can affect a thin person as well. Early detection and treatment can prevent serious damage.
4
MYTH: Heart diseases are genetic. There’s nothing you can do about it. FACT IS: There are things you can do to reduce risk factors and stay healthy. According to Women’s Health Heart Initiative, majority of heart diseases can be prevented by developing a healthy lifestyle. Doctors advise that you always keep a check on your weight. At least six hours of undisturbed sleep, eating sumptuous amounts of fruits and avoiding tobacco smoking are some of the things you can do.

Addison’s disease (also known as primary adrenal insufficiency or hypoadrenalism) is a rare disorder of the adrenal glands. It affects the production of two hormones – cortisol and aldosterone – which help to regulate blood pressure. In Addison’s disease, usually the cortex of the both adrenal glands has been destroyed. This disrupts the production of two steroid hormones, called cortisol and aldosterone. nhs.uk
Mustard greens are an excellent anticancer vegetable. They may also be beneficial for colds, arthritis or depression. While mustard greens sold in the United States are relatively mild in flavor, some mustard green varieties, especially those in Asia, can be as hot as a jalapeno pepper depending on their mustard oil content. mercola.com

ANALYSE NOW
Video game hacks straight into US surveillance storm. MICHAEL THURSTON feedback@postnoon.com
A
video game with a protagonist who controls the world around him by hacking into systems is generating growing buzz, for its eerie parallels with the current storm about US surveillance. Games typically use weapons ranging from guns and swords to zappers to special powers to defeat enemies, overcome obstacles or simply score points, and hundreds are on display at the E3 gaming industry conference in Los Angeles. But in “Watch Dogs,” the player-controlled anti-hero can access everything from the cellphone conversations and medical records of passers-by to computers which control traffic lights, to advance through the game. “We knew we had a relevant topic,” Canadian Ubisoft developer Dominic Guay told AFP,
recalling how he arrived ahead of the gaming megagathering this week, and checked into his hotel. “I turned on CNN, and the first sentence I heard was ‘invasion of privacy,’ switched channel and on Fox they were like, ‘surveillance,’ and I said to my creative director, ‘Those are all our key words’.” Ubisoft, the French company behind top gaming
titles including “Assassin’s Creed” and “Prince of Persia: Sands of Time,” showed off “Watch Dogs” on Monday, at a pre-E3 press conference in a downtown LA hotel. Set in Chicago, the game centers on Aiden Pearce, who uses his smartphone to access the city’s Central Operating System, which controls everything from power grids and traffic management technology to bank accounts and phone networks. Guay said technology is now making it possible to foresee a world not unlike that in British writer George Orwell’s classic novel “1984,” in which Big Brother watches and controls everything. In “Watch Dogs,” Pearce starts off seeking revenge for a loved one, but as he finds out more about the city, through hacking into its systems and inhabitants, he
becomes a “vigilante,” according to Guay. He added: “It’s actually happening as we speak. It makes a more efficient city right? But it also creates the vulnerabilities we have in our game,” he said, insisting the game makes no value judgment on the complex and sensitive issue. “We’re not trying to be moralistic about it. But we’re hoping that players, when they’ve finished the game, maybe start a conversation. They can form an opinion about it,” he added. “Watch Dogs” will be released in November, including versions for play on on Sony’s next-generation PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One consoles. AFP
Twitter has quietly opened up its various analytics tools to the public, giving everyone access to in-depth data about the people and brands who follow them, as well as the performance of their most recent tweets. The change was spotted by Christopher Penn, vice president of marketing technology at SHIFT Communications earlier this week, as well as Danny Olson, a digital strategist at Weber Shandwick. Users simply need to head to the Twitter Ads dashboard and click on the ‘Analytics’ tab at the top of the page to access the new features.
SYMANTEC CUTS STAFF
Security software company Symantec may lay off as many as 1,700 employees as early as today. The cuts are part of a companywide reorganisation first announced in January as part of a turnaround plan instituted by Steve Bennett, Symantec’s new CEO, who joined the company 11 months ago. Bennett, a former CEO at Intuit and a veteran of General Electric, told Reuters in a January interview that the company has too many management layers and would be streamlined into 10 business units.
GAME ON APPLE! During the session, which is available as a video to all registered Apple developers via the WWDC app, it was also announced that Logitech and Moga are already collaborating on initial hardware designs for the game controller. The certified third-party involvement was first spotted by Czech Apple blog Jablickar. A closer look at the presentation, however, revealed just how serious Apple is in making standardized game controllers a reality in iOS 7. Titled “Integrating with Game Controllers,” speakers ran through a fairly comprehensive set of app frameworks and other assets that will help developers code games for the proposed controllers.

Their new film, Dhruva Natchathiram, is said to be a thriller that revolves around a man who’s on a hunt to find someone important. The film’s first look featured a classified file with names of 11 people and that the hero must trace the 12th person, whose identity is not revealed, in the list. The principal shooting of Dhruva Natchathiram is going to begin in Chennai on June 17 and a majority of the film will be shot in Chennai and New Delhi. The film also stars Simran, Parthiepan, and Sudhanshu Pandey in important roles. AR Rahman will score the music.

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH says parenthood changed him ‘for the better’
C
hris Hemsworth loves being a dad. The actor chatted with E! News last night at the XBox E3 party in Los Angeles about parenthood and what he’s got planned for Father’s Day this Sunday. “I think I’ll be working,” he told us. “But I’ll see her at some stage, definitely, have breakfast or something,” Hemsworth added. “She’s a bit young to make me breakfast. She’s only 1.”
Although little India Rose can’t whip up a batch of pancakes or cook her dad a nice omelette just yet, she’s made a strong impact on her pops from the moment she entered this world. “Yeah, for the better,” the actor said in response to whether fatherhood has changed him. “It puts things into perspective.” AGENCIES

BRIEFS
Heat bounce back to tie series
LeBron James had a game-high 33 points and 11 rebounds as Miami Heat defeated the San Antonio Spurs 109-93 in game four. SAN ANTONIO: LeBron James had a game-high 33 points and 11 rebounds and Dwyane Wade scored 32 as the Miami Heat defeated the San Antonio Spurs 109-93 in game four of the NBA finals on Thursday. Wade had his first 30-point game of the playoffs and Chris Bosh finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Heat, who levelled the best-of-seven championship series at 2-2. The defending NBA champions Miami made sure the league showdown would return to Florida for at least a game six on Tuesday. Pivotal game five is on Sunday in San Antonio. Miami looked nothing like the team that was humiliated 113-77 in game three as once again they displayed their ability to make sensational recoveries from defeats. The Heat are now a perfect 6-0 following a defeat in the post-season and all six wins have come by double digits. Miami hasn’t lost back-to-back games since January 8 and 10. “Our guys understand the challenge,” said Spurs coach Erik Spoelstra. “We are not expecting for it to be easy at this level.” Tony Parker had 15 points and 11 assists and Tim Duncan finished with 20 points for the Spurs, who were looking to take a stranglehold on the series after their dominating victory on Tuesday. “It is one game,” Duncan said. “We

will make adjustments and see what happens next game.” Parker was playing with a sore hamstring he injured in the previous game. Spoelstra decided to shake up his lineup Thursday by starting forward Mike Miller. James also made good on his guarantee to play better after a dismal performance in the game three loss. “I was just going as hard as I could
until the tank was empty,” James said. Miami outscored the Spurs 28-17 in the fourth quarter after the teams were tied 49-49 at the half. The Heat’s Big Three — James, Wade and Bosh — combined for 85 points which was just eight less than the entire San Antonio team. “When Bosh, Wade and James score like that ... it is hard to beat them,” said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. Taylor back on CA board
SYDNEY: Former Test captain Mark Taylor was Friday recruited back onto Cricket Australia’s board following a change in Cricket NSW’s constitution. Taylor, who had been a member of the CA board since 2004, lost his place last year when the national entity was streamlined to nine members. But Cricket New South Wales have now altered the organisation’s rules so they can nominate an independent representative for a place on the CA board that is not from the state organisation’s board.

Vettel: A very modern F1 champion
Brazil to kick off event in key World Cup test
LONDON: Bad news for Sebastian Vettel’s rivals — not only has he extended his contract but Red Bull are confident they have finetuned their car for Europe’s high speed circuits. The triple champion’s consummate triumph last weekend in Montreal proved both he and his car are back in the groove after problems in Spain, where they led on the high-speed sections at the Circuit de Catalunya but came in fourth. “I think that obviously set-up wise we made some progress here and we hope that that will continue into
the Silverstone weekend,” said Red Bull team chief Christian Horner in Canada. “Malaysia also had very quick corners and we were strong there so I think we have understood some of the issues we had in Barcelona, and hopefully we can carry this form into the next few races.” That means the heartland races of the European ‘season’ at which the controversial issue of tyre-wear may be Vettel’s only problem. The Canadian GP, however, demonstrated that Vettel and Red Bull look to have sorted out that problem too.
BRASILIA: After months of angst over preparation delays, Brazil steps into the global spotlight Saturday when it kicks off the Confederations Cup, a key test of its readiness to stage the World Cup next year. Six Brazilian cities: Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza, Recife, Rio and Salvador are hosting the two-week soccer tournament, expected to attract some 355,000 Brazilians and foreign tourists. Brazil, winner of the previous edition in South Africa in 2009, has this year dropped to a new low of 22nd in the rankings of world football’s governing body

Sri Lanka’s Sangakkara blows away England LONDON: Kumar Sangakkara smashed an unbeaten 134 off 135 balls as Sri Lanka stunned England by seven wickets in a high-scoring thriller on Thursday to stay afloat in the Champions Trophy. The Islanders, chasing England’s seemingly impregnable 293-7, launched a spirited chase in the day-night game at the Oval to surpass the target in 47.1 overs and throw open the semi-final race from group A. Sri Lanka, who would have been knocked out of the tournament had they lost, are now level with England on two points each, one behind group leaders New Zealand. Australia, the fourth team in the group, have one point. The two semi-final spots will be determined after the last round of matches when England take on New Zealand in Cardiff on Sunday and Sri Lanka clash with Australia at the Oval on Monday. Left-handed Sangakkara, cheered on by a big Sri Lankan contingent in the packed stands, anchored the chase with his 15th one-day hundred that was stud-

ded with 12 boundaries. Pinch-hitter Nuwan Kulasekara, who was sent in at the fall of the third wicket, hit a quickfire 58 not out during a match-winning partnership of 110 from 71 balls with Sangakkara. Kulasekara, who had two previous one-day half-centuries to his credit, plundered five fours and three sixes that demoralised the England attack. Seamer James Anderson claimed two wickets, but Stuart Broad went for 67 runs in 8.1 overs and Tim Bresnan gave away 63 runs in 10 overs.

“We needed this win to be honest,” said Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews, who had called for an improved batting display after his team were shot out for 138 by New Zealand. “Except for that final over from Eranga, our bowlers came back well on a pitch that played really well. “And then Sangakkara batted so well. Its great to have a player like that at number three. The management decided to promote Kulasekara because he had been batting well. And it paid off.” Sangakkara put on 92 for the second wicket with Tillakaratne Dilshan (44) and 90 for the third with Mahela Jayawardene (42) to give Sri Lanka the perfect launching pad. England captain Alastair Cook praised Sangakkara’s batting, but hoped his team will bounce back against New Zealand in Cardiff. “That was obviously an outstanding hundred,” Cook said. “Any time you chase 300, someone has to play well. The pitch
quickened up a bit, but sometimes you have to give credit where it’s due. “We knew we had to win one of our last two games, hopefully we will come back strongly at Cardiff.” England’s total revolved around Jonathan Trott’s 76 and Joe Root’s 68 off 55 balls after Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field under overcast skies. Cook chipped in with 59 and Ravi Bopara smashed 28 runs from the final over after Sri Lanka grabbed four wickets for five runs towards the end to make it 254-7 in the 48th over. Bopara boosted the total with three sixes, two boundaries and a two in the 50th over sent down by seamer Shaminda Eranga to return unbeaten on 33 off 13 balls. Root, the victim of what England cricket authorities said was an “unprovoked physical attack” by Australian batsman David Warner in a Birmingham bar over the weekend, hit five fours. AFP

30&31 Bravo ramps up pressure on ‘chokers’
India, Pakistan set to clash in ‘dead’ match
KULDIP LAL Agence France-Presse
CARDIFF: West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo (above) hopes that South Africa’s habit of ‘choking’ at major tournaments will work in his side’s favour when they meet in a winnertakes-all Champions Trophy clash on Friday. Whichever team comes out on top in Cardiff will join already qualified India as one of the two semi-finalists out of Group B in a competition featuring the world’s top eight one-day nations. Despite having had several fine limited overs sides since readmission, the Proteas haven’t lifted a major one-day trophy since winning the 1998 edition of this tournament. Especially at World Cups, they’ve found some remarkable ways to bow out, be it a dramatic 1999 tie with Australia at Edgbaston when they had the match all but won or failing to read correctly the Duckworth/Lewis sheet for rain-affected fixtures on home soil four years later. Hence the tag of “chokers”, one Bravo had no hesitation in using despite the fact the West Indies have not beaten South Africa in a one-day international since 2006. AFP
BIRMINGHAM: India and Pakistan clash in a Champions Trophy match in Edgbaston on Saturday that promises highvoltage action despite the academic nature of the contest. What was expected to be the marquee battle of the eightnation tournament — tickets for the match were sold out within hours of going on sale last November — has been reduced to a dead rubber. World Cup champions India are already through to the semifinals after winning both group B matches so far, while Pakistan have crashed out of the race with two successive defeats. But sporting contests between the arch-rivals are never irrelevant for players and millions of fans across the globe as heroes turn villains — or vice-versa — depending on the result. As India look to smoothen rough edges ahead of the semifinals, Pakistan will play for pride hoping to build on the 2-1 series success in India in December-January. “I don’t think the Indian team has ever played a dead game,” skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said, referring to the huge fan following his side enjoys. “The match is also important to improve in the areas we want to.” Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore added: “It’s an
important match. It’s certainly not a dead game for us and we will look to give our best.” Pakistan were let down by poor batting, having been bowled out for 170 by the West Indies and then dismissed for 167 by a depleted South African attack missing frontline strike bowlers Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel. Skipper Misbah-ul Haq and Nasir Jamshed were the only batsmen to offer resistance in the two games, which put the hardworking bowlers under additional pressure.
Misbah, who top-scored with an unbeaten 96 and 55 in both matches, conceded the batting failure cost his side dearly. “There are a lot of positives to take from this tournament,” he said. “We bowled and fielded very well, but the batting has not been good. The batsmen are much better than what they have done here.” Misbah, whose side was taunted by fans after the loss to South Africa, insisted the team were still very motivated to perform well against India. “When a team plays the way we have, cri-
ticism is bound to come,” he said. “Supporters are like that. They also praise you when you do well. We must now play to our potential against India. We should not go back empty-handed.” India, meanwhile, justified their number one ranking in one-day cricket with two impressive performances against South Africa and the West Indies. They piled up 331-7 against the Proteas to win by 26 runs on a flat Cardiff pitch, and then restricted the West Indies to 2339 at the Oval to win by eight wickets.
Warner sorry for Root attack
LONDON: Australia batsman David Warner on Thursday apologised to Joe Root after punching the England batsman in a Birmingham bar during the ongoing Champions Trophy. “I am here today [Thursday] to put my hand up and apologise to Joe. I’ve let my team-mates, family and everyone down,” the 26-yearold told a news conference. Warner said he had exchanged text messages with Root and that his apology had been accepted. Earlier on Thursday, the Australian batsman had been

fined Aus$11,500 (£7,000, $11,000) and suspended until the start of the Ashes by Cricket Australia. He will miss the rest of title-holders Australia’s involvement in the Champions Trophy, starting with their final group game against Sri Lanka at London’s Oval ground on Monday — a match they must win to have a chance of reaching the semi-finals — and their two warm-up matches ahead of the Ashes. However, the opener will be available for the first Ashes Test against England at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, which
starts on July 10. Warner said he was determined to play a role in the Ashes despite his second brush with the authorities in the space of a month. Three weeks ago, he was fined Aus$5,750 over an expletive-ridden Twitter tirade at two Australian journalists. “It’s up to me to be accountable for my actions, which I am, and try not to be aggressive like I did,” added Warner at his London news conference on Thursday. “I’ve just got to move on and do everything I can to get picked for the first Test.”

ALLAN KELLY Agence France-Presse ARDMORE: Phil Mickelson shrugged off an overnight flight scramble and an early morning thunderstorm to post the clubhouse lead in the 113th US Open at Merion Golf Club on Thursday. The American’s three under 67, sandwiched around a 3 hours 32 minutes play suspension due to the bad weather, was still the target by the end of the day as half the field were unable to complete their rounds. England’s former world number one Luke Donald was best-placed among the chasers at four under through 13 holes. Tiger Woods, meanwhile, appeared to be struggling with an injury to his left wrist after jarring it while playing out of Merion’s thick and wet rough. Mickelson skipped practise rounds at the course on Tuesday and Wednesday to fly back to California and attend his daughter Amanda’s eighth-grade graduation ceremony, then flew back in time to start the Open on Thursday. The airplane landed at Philadelphia at 4:15 in the morning and the 42-year-old left-hander reached the course 87 minutes later, well ahead of his 7:11
starters try to match him, knowing that, due to the delay, they would be unable to complete their rounds by nightfall. Mickelson, who will turn 43 on Sunday, played down the difficulty of the flight logistics, saying that as a professional golfer he was accustomed to the situation. “I got on the plane at 8:00,

Hecklers get Garcia’s goat After Garcia’s comment that he would serve Woods ‘fried chicken’ should they dine together, the Spaniard was taunted by a few spectators. JIM SLATER Agence France-Presse ARDMORE: Sergio Garcia struggled with hecklers and poor shotmaking on Thursday at the US Open, opening with a threeover par 73 and being chided by some spectators over a racism row involving Tiger Woods. After Garcia’s comment last month that he would serve Woods “fried chicken” should they dine together, considered an insult by African-Americans, the
Spaniard was taunted by a few spectators. One clucked like a chicken when Garcia was near. Another yelled the Spanish words for fried chicken. Yet another was
the lone boo during polite applause as Garcia was introduced ahead of his opening tee shot. “There were a couple here and there, but I felt the people were very nice for the whole day,” Garcia said. “I think that almost all of them were behind me and that was nice to see.” Garcia’s troubled round, getting himself into trouble and trying to get out, proved an apt metaphor for his off-the-course issues with Woods.

I feel great,” he said. “So this is not that out of the ordinary; I do this about six, ten times a year where I fly back east red eye, play some outing and then come home. So it’s not out of the ordinary.” With all of the 78 golfers who were in the 26 morning groupings having completed their rounds, big-hitting Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts was closest to Mickelson, two strokes back after a 69.
Wrist may hamper Woods T
op-ranked Tiger Woods stumbled to a two-over par start over 10 holes in Thursday’s first round of the US Open and appeared to injure his left wrist blasting out of Merion’s dense rough. Woods might have hurt himself with his second shot on the first hole, following an errant tee shot by punching out of the deep grass. Woods shook his left wrist after making the shot.
