GOLDEN JUBILEE

Man attacked for marrying from another community He was beaten up by his brothers-in-law for he followed a different religion. Mohd SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com

S

John, a 28-year-old Christian, who had fallen in love with Sweta, 24, a Hindu, was allegedly attacked by his brothers-in-law on Wednesday at Kottapet Road. He is in the hospital with injuries all over his body, Chaithanyapuri police said. It is said that the girl’s parents and brothers did not approve of Sweta marrying outside their community. They were more worried at the conversion, which they thought was demeaning to them. As the parents would not allow such a marriage, Sweta and John ran away and had a registered marriage.

Her mother was heartbroken when she knew what her daughter did, police said. The mother and daughter used to keep in touch over phone. On Wednesday, the mother asked Sweta to come and meet her. John and Sweta were riding a bike when her brothers waylaid them. They thrashed John before taking Sweta away to their home. On John’s complaint, police intervened and arrested the brothers and restored Sweta to John. The police later made an attempt to bring the two families together, but both sides were adamant, it is learnt. Sweta’s parents and brothers say the man had trapped her in the pretext of love and John’s parents say their son suffered because of the girl.

Cong ready with Brahmastra: Target MIM If MIM does not support a Cong MLC, the ruling party will trigger the destroyer. INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com

I

s there any chance of friendsturned-foes, the ruling Congress and the City-based MIM party, joining hands again? Their 12-year-long friendship came to naught recently on the temple-Charminar issue. Since then the MIM leaders, Asasuddin Owaisi and Akbaruddin Owaisi, had launched personal attacks against Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy. There appeared nothing left now. But not quite; some political compulsions will keep their bond alive for a while. The forthcoming MLC elections under MLA quota in March will force the MIM to extend support to the ruling Congress candidate despite their differences. In a quid pro quo deal, the

Congress had extended support to the MIM to ensure the victory of its MLC candidate in the past. Now the ruling Congress is expecting the same favour from the MIM bosses.

by it in the civic body. A party senior told Postnoon, “Ours is a strategic silence. Despite the fact that the MIM left no stone unturned when it came to levelling baseless allegations against us, we did not utter a single word against them. The reason for this being that we are waiting for the MIM’s response during the ensuing MLC elections as it had the moral obligation to extend support to us.”

sure on the MIM in case the latter does not honour the understanding reached between them regarding the MLC seat. It is to remove the GHMC Mayor Mohd Majid Hussain, who belongs to MIM from his position by amending the existing GHMC Act. “If the MIM does not extend support to us, we will use the Brahmastra and oust the MIM party mayor from his position. We will amend the GHMC Act and ensure that the mayor is dethroned from his position,” the Congress leader said. A total of 10 MLC seats under MLA quota are going for the elections. Out of these 10 seats, the Congress stands to win five seats, the main opposition TDP is likely to win two seats. The remaining seats are likely to have a tough competition with the entry of TRS and YSR Congress parties.

The State does not have any dedicated electricity lines like Gujarat. The State government had decided to set up an exclusive call centre for farmers in AP. The most important objective behind setting up this call centre is to achieve two important goals. The first is to prevent farmers of the State from suffering power cuts due to damaged transformers and by replacing the transformers immediately on receipt of a complaint from farm-

ers. The second is to ensure dedicated power supply for a specified period of time to the farming sector every day. According to sources, frequent transformer failures across the State is causing a lot of problems to farmers, besides leading to disruption of power supply. To avoid this, the State has now decided to replace the transformers within 48 to 72 hours from the receipt of the complaint through the call centre. “The call centre will help us locate the failed transformer so we can work on it quickly. Upon receiving the information, we will immediately replace it within the stipulated period of time. This will prevent the farmers from facing further agony,” a senior official of the State government told Postnoon. In Gujarat also, a similar system exists where transformers are replaced within a deadline. The Congress leaders feel that this idea will definitely endear themselves to the people of the State in the coming days.

Likewise, the Krishna-Guntur graduates MLC elections scheduled on February 21 and holidays, including Sunday, thereafter will have their own impact on the padayatra. alentine’s Day was not just about expressing love for loved ones, on Thursday many Hyderabadis took to the street to address the violence that millions of women experience every day. Nearly 35 NGOs, independent activists, members of the transgender community, and hundreds of individuals from different walks of life came together to take part in the One Billion Rising (OBR) campaign held at Necklace road. The supporters staged a rally from Jalavihar to People’s plaza. While some supporters swayed to drum beats and watched children from different government schools dance and perform to the One Billion Rising song,

others wore blue ribbons and spread the message of women’s and children’s safety. So what is the Rise about? Prominent feminist writer Vasanth Kannabiran of NGO, Asmita collective, that initiated the OBR campaign in Hyderabad says, “Although sources of violence may seem diverse, women’s responses sound tragically similar. Besides the pain and strength you will hear in their survival stories, the themes that resound across cultures and geographies are the indifference of the authorities, the familial instinct of denial and the lack of public outrage about the violence that millions of women experience every day. “We believe that until these themes are addressed and regarded by whole communities as an unacceptable desecration of human dignity, the violence

Botsa’s dilemma: chief or minister?

W

ill APCC president Botsa Satyanarayana, who is also the minister for transport in the Kiran Kumar Reddy cabinet, lose his ministerial berth in tune with Rahul Gandhi’s “one man, one post” policy ? Soon after taking over the reins as second-in-command of the Congress Party by becoming its vice-president, Rahul Gandhi had made it amply clear that he was against one leader holding more than one post either in the organisation or in the government. Though this policy was in vogue in the

past, it was given a go by later. A meeting of all the PCC presidents and CLP leaders was being held in New Delhi on Friday at the behest of Rahul Gandhi to prepare the party for the ensuing 2014 elections and to work out the strategies in this regard. Since Satyanarayana is holding two posts, he is expected to be divested of one of the two. Thus, the million dollar question that is doing the rounds in Congress circles here is whether Botsa would opt to remain as PCC chief or would he stick top his ministerial position. NSS

The same news published in leading dailies later created anguish among those defaulted. Many rang up the papers angrily asking why they did it. According to sources, the commissioner and mayor received calls from a prominent MLA on the inclusion of his name in the list published. The MLA naturally suspected those ill-disposed to him for selectively leaking the names. It is believed that the commissioner ordered a probe into how the list was leaked out, rather than making sure that the defaulters paid the tax. Many believe that the defaulters would hardly be hit as they know how to shield themselves with pliable bureaucracy at their disposal. But it did disturb their sleep. The traffic on Habsiguda main road near GE is choked after the metro rail occupied a major por-

tion of the arterial road. And a temple in the middle of the road makes it doubly difficult for the traffic to pass. The result is a colossal loss of man hours, fuel and time. At a recent public discussion, this reporter was taking people’s opinions on the upcoming railway budget from MMTS and Railway users. While a majority of the public remained vague and offered no great opinions, one college student smartly walked up to the reporter and said, “ I have heard that this budget is going to be a dream budget. But whose dream is it? Sonia Gandhi’s? God alone can help us in India.” (SS)

YOUTH JAI HO!

With Rahul Gandhi’s ascendance, the term ‘youth’ that had been gathering dust in the party

attic has once again come out. Now, in the Congress circles, those above 40 years are a threatened species! If a senior person says something inconvenient to a junior neta, he is in for trouble. Just drop the name of Rahul. It’s enough to scare the senior and make him submit. This had happened once before during Rajiv Gandhi’s time. He too was saying the ‘youth mantra’. But the crafty politician, who used age to smite down all opposition like a magic wand, was the long-forgotten kamaraj. He floated the policy of ‘retirement’ in politics to get Indira through. And it scared the old cronies so bad that it silenced all opposition. We have seen many ‘youth’ netas going astray. In fact, it is a fallacy to believe age, caste, community or sex has anything to do with political acumen. It is only in India we believe these silly things. There is wisdom in the young, there is wizardry in the seniors. Let us hope the best win. (PK)

SPECIAL REPORT

RAISE THE LIMIT! A

vast majority of the salaried class, employed in a host of trade and industry sectors, want the Finance Minister P Chidambaram to raise the exemption limit of income tax to at least `3 lakh and increase deductions such as medical and educational allowances in the Union budget so that they are left with more purchasing power, a comprehensive Assocham survey across major cities has indicated. The surveyed cities are: Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Kochi. Titled, Budget 2013: Common man’s expectations from the FM, it examined 2,500 employees from the different sectors. Over 89 per cent of the respondents said that the slab of tax-free income has not moved up in line with real inflation. The current basic exemption limit of `2,00,000 should be increased to at least `3,00,000, with the limit for women going upto `3,50,000 lakh. This will increase the purchasing power of individuals and stimulate demand. “Pushing the basic exemption limit will help the tax payers in saving on taxes and also align it with the proposals made by the parliamentary standing commit-

tee on the Direct Taxes Code (DTC),” the survey noted. With increasing healthcare costs, the existing tax-free limit of `15,000 should be increased to `50,000. The same also needs to be considered in the budget, said 89 per cent of the respondents.

Over 71 per cent of the respondents demanded that the national pension system (NPS) be brought under exempt-exemptexempt (EEE). The transportation allowance granted by the employer to his employee for commuting between the place of work and residence is tax-free to the extent of `800 per month. This limit was fixed more than a decade ago, and definitely needs to be revised upwards to at least `3,000 per month, given the rising commuting costs across the country, adds the survey. “Additional benefits related to housing, the deduction limit for payment of interest (on selfoccupied property) has remained constant at `1,50,000 since 2001. There is an increase in property prices, and accordingly the amount of loan. An increase in

the exemption limit to `2,50,000 will be a welcome change,” reveals the survey. “Section 80C of the IT Act provides a deduction of `1,00,000 for certain investments. This provision helps people in making forced savings that, helps them in the future. A common man expects this limit to be increased to `2,00,000, with sublimit of `50,000 exclusively for insurance and pension, adds DS Rawat, secretary general Assocham.

WIDE SPECTRUM COVERED

The survey was able to target employees from 18 broad sectors, with the maximum share contributed by employees from IT/ITes sector (17 per cent). After IT/ITeS sector, contribution of the survey respondents from financial services is 11 per cent. Employees working in engineering and telecom sector contributed 9 per cent and 8 per cent respectively in the questionnaire. Nearly 6 per cent of the employees belonged to market research/KPO and media background each. Management, FMCG and infrastructure sector employees’ share is 5 per cent each in the total survey. Respondents from power and the real estate sector contributed 4 per cent each. Employees from

education and food and beverages sector provided a share of 3 per cent each. Advertising, manufacturing and textile employees offered a share of 2 per cent each in the survey results. Around 55 per cent of the survey respondents fall under the age bracket of 25-29 years, followed by 30-39 years (26 per cent), 40-49 years (16 per cent), 50-59 years (2 per cent) and 60-65 years. “Investments in infrastructure bonds are currently allowed for a deduction up to `20,000. These bonds have proved to be quite popular and the limit should be increased to `50,000 and those withdrawn must be restored, considering that the government needs massive funds for the development of the infrastructure sector. Also, the lock-in period must be restricted to five years,”added 82 per cent respondents. Over 71 per cent of the respondents demanded that the national pension system (NPS) be brought under the exemptexempt-exempt (EEE ) as against exempt-exempt-tax (EET) at present. This means that investors get a tax exemption at all three stages of investment, appreciation and withdrawal.” Compiled by PK Surendran

IT’S JUST A RUMOUR

The Vatican on Wednesday denied an Internet rumour that the pope would take up permanent residence in the Abbey of Monte Cassino — a famous monastery that was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt.

Papal ‘cohabitation’ poses unique Vatican challenge GINA DOGGETT feedback@postnoon.com

T

he Roman Catholic Church faces a unique challenge starting next month when a living former pope begins a "cohabitation" with his successor, both residing in the world's tiniest sovereign state, Vatican City. The Vatican insists that the German pope, who stunned the world by announcing that he will retire on February 28, wants to keep a low profile in retirement. "He will live at the Vatican in total discretion," Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said Wednesday. "His presence will in no way be an impediment, interference or a problem." Nevertheless, Lombardi said the octogenarian's presence would be felt and "appreciated", and did not rule out an advisory role for the future pensioner, whose title has yet to be determined but may be Bishop of Rome Emeritus. "If his successor wants advice from him he will be totally free to provide it... (but) this would in no way be required" of the former pope, Lombardi said. Others in the Vatican are more nervous about the unprecedented situation. Rino Fisichella, head of the Vatican department for the new evangelization, said the former pope may eventually have to live elsewhere. The Vatican on Wednesday denied an Internet rumour that the pope would take up permanent residence in the Abbey of Monte Cassino — a famous monastery that was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt. The cerebral former theology professor, who will turn 86 in April, is a prolific writer. He is currently completing a work on faith that started out as an encyclical but will have to be published as a book given Benedict's imminent abdication.

With the benefit of hindsight, a series of clues leading up to Pope Benedict XVI's momentous resignation announcement this week suggest he had in fact been preparing the move for some time. AFP PHOTO / FILIPPO MONTEFORTE

He is also expected to spend more time with his beloved cats and playing Beethoven and Mozart compositions on his piano. An early signal of Benedict's intention to go quietly is his plan to leave the Vatican the day he steps aside, slipping away to the summer papal residence of Castel Gondolfo outside Rome. The Vatican has been unable to say how long he will stay there, but has stressed he will not have any role in the Conclave of Cardinals that is to elect his successor in the third week of March -- in time for Easter at the end of the month. His absence will allow workers to prepare the papal apartments in the Apostolic Palace for the new pontiff -- and complete renovations of the living quarters for the soon-to-be ex-pope in a former nunnery at the Vatican.

Benedict's choice not to return to his native Bavaria should surprise no one given that he has now lived in Rome for nearly four decades. The little-known Mater Ecclesiae convent where he will

reside was established by the pope's predecessor John Paul II to house cloistered nuns. Their departure last November, two years earlier than expected, raised few eyebrows at the time but is now cited as one of a series of clues that presaged the pope's shock announcement, according to astute Vatican watchers. The disused convent is an oasis of calm with its own gardens producing rare roses — one of them named after John Paul II — as well as vegetables and citrus fruit. The peppers, tomatoes, courgettes and cabbages grown in the vegetable garden traditionally supply the papal kitchen. Spread over three floors, the modern complex has 12 monastic cells upstairs, while the ground floor houses a kitchen, living room, library and chapel. The cells are sparsely furnished: the only decorations to

be seen are wooden crosses and a few paintings depicting scenes from religious life, according to the Vatican. In retirement, Benedict is to revert to his birth name Joseph Ratzinger — but canon law experts are looking into whether he can reclaim his status as a cardinal, or whether the new pope can make him a cardinal once again. Asked if the pope would receive a pension, Lombardi hesitated but said the pope would not go hungry. "We will ensure he can live a dignified existence," Lombardi said. Some traditions usually observed at the death of a pope will be observed, notably the destruction of the Fisherman's Ring used to place the papal seal on official Church documents. "It's an unprecedented situation, we'll see how it goes," Lombardi said.

Labour shortage to rise Due to the workforce increasingly moving from traditional brick and mortar industry to more lucrative industries such as IT, ITeS and Banking. POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com

I

n India, labour shortage is pegged to go up by 65 per cent by the next decade with more workforce moving from traditional brick and mortar industry like the construction and real estate sectors to more lucrative industries such as IT, ITeS, Banking and Telecom. The acute labour shortage in the construction sector is going to drive the industry to go in for large-scale mechanisation and also project management, according to the report Indian Construction Sector – The Great Leap Forward, by Synergy Property Development Services, the global project management consulting & turnkey solution company. It clearly indicated that the future of the construction sector will hinge on project management, mechanisation and precast or prefabricated technology,

to meet the challenges of cost, quality and time. “We witnessed the high and low of all aspects of the construction sector in the last decade, the demand supply of materials, the housing market, labour availability and geographic shifts. Overall it was a honeymoon period. The next 10 years will be a period of caution and uncertainty, with innovation and technology adoption being the guiding force. Further cost rise of construction materials and inflation will remain a concern,” said Sankey Prasad, chairman and MD, Synergy Property Development. The report highlights the industry’s struggle to manage cost, quality and time. It has pointed out that with the cost of material expected to double in the near future, the sector in India has no other option but to adopt and blend in global best practices. In order to survive and sustain, the sector has to opt

for large scale ‘mechanisation’. It said that the rate of mechanisation in India at 20 per cent was low compared to developed countries where it was between 60-70 per cent. With India at the cusp of rapid urbanisation and

The RBI projections notwithstanding, the overall project implementation practices also impact on the cost, quality and time of projects. development, there was everincreasing demand for commercial and residential space and it could be met only through adoption of mechanisation and project management practices. With rapid development across Tier II and III cities, India will witness acute labour shortages in the coming years. It is

here that project management services will provide the customer with a one-stop solution that will enable integrated and supervised project implementation, from design to delivery. The report said that the present times were appropriate for those wanting to invest in either in their ‘dream house’ or commercial property, as there are indications of increase in prices by nearly 50 per cent, based on RBI projections. Additionally, without proper project management practices, that involve design, construction related activities, management of work schedules and other processes, there could be time overruns in the delivery of the project. This is likely to increase the overall cost of construction. Therefore, the RBI projections notwithstanding, the overall project implementation practices also impact on the cost, quality and time of projects.

Billionaire Warren Buffett's investment powerhouse Berkshire Hathaway and Brazilian-led 3G Capital announced Thursday they would take over venerable US ketchup maker Heinz in a deal worth $28 billion. The buyers heralded 144-year-old HJ Heinz Co's strong, global portfolio of prepared food brands, which Buffett called "great tasting" products. The two buyers will pay Heinz shareholders $72.50 per share in cash — a 20 per cent premium on Heinz's Wednesday closing price. Counting debt assumed by the buyers, the deal valued Heinz at about $28 billion, the largest-ever food company takeover, they said. Buffett, founder and chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, told CNBC the deal was the idea of 3G Capital's Brazilian founder, Jorge Paulo Lemann.

DEBEERS EYES NEW MINE The world's leading diamond company De Beers announced Friday a $2 billion investment in a new South African diamond mine that will begin production in 2021. The underground mine is beneath the currently operating open pit Venetia Mine in northern Limpopo Province. "The development and build phase of the underground mine is expected to create 1,000 jobs over the next nine years while open pit mining operations continue," De Beers said in a statement. The company estimates that the new mine will yield 96 million carats of diamonds and secure 3,000 jobs, for both skilled and semiskilled workers. The bulk of all equipment and services will be sourced in South Africa. De Beers, founded in 1888 by Cecil Rhodes, has been run by Oppenheimer family members or trusted associates since the late 1920s. It mines and sells around 35 per cent of the world's diamonds.

Pranab named in chopper deal NEW DELHI: In what may come as a major embarrassment for the Congress-led ruling coalition at the Centre, a factsheet prepared by the UPA government mentions President Pranab Mukherjee’s name in the controversial AgustaWestland chopper deal with Italy. According to reports on Friday, said that the deal with Italian defence firm Finmeccanica for supplying 12 choppers for the use of VVIPs was cleared during Pranab Mukherjee’s tenure as defence minister in 2005. The government’s factsheet further states that the tender was finalised in 2005 when Pranab Mukherjee was the defence minister, and SP Tyagi, now retired, was the Air Chief Marshal. The factsheet also puts the blame on the BJP-led NDA government of involvement in the deal. The Centre’s factsheet alleges that in 2003, the then National Security Advisor Brajesh Mishra wrote to the then Defence Secretary that the existing rules were unfair as it allowed only single bidding and that the qualifying height of the choppers should be reduced from 18,000 feet to at least 14,000 feet. When a new tender was floated, three foreign defence firms entered the bidding process, out of which AgustaWestland was finally selected.

ALLAHABAD: A fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela today, leaving one person dead and two others injured. The fire mishap took place on a day when lakhs of devotees have gathered for the ‘Shahi Snan’ on the occasion of Basant Panchami. “An unidentified person was killed in the fire that broke out in Sector 4 of the Kumbh Mela area early this morning. “Two people sustained minor injuries while the fire was brought under control quickly, though about 10 tents were gutted by the time,” SSP (Kumbh) RKS Rathore said.

He said prima facie the fire was caused by a short circuit and the person, who got killed, “probably was fast asleep and could not run out of his tent before getting engulfed in flames”. In another incident that took place some 5 kms away, 10 tents were gutted in a fire late last night when pilgrims were having their dinner inside a camp of a religious organisation. However, nobody was injured in the incident, sources in the Mela administration said. The Maha Kumbh congregation, which com-

menced on January 14, has so far witnessed a number of fire-related incidents, most notable of these being the one on January 25 which had left 19 people seriously injured out of whom as many at least five have succumbed to their injuries so far. Meanwhile, the Shahi Snan on the occasion of Basant Panchami is going on peacefully and quietly as “Akharas” had taken a decision to take out their processions without the usual fanfare in view of the February 10 stampede at the Allahabad Junction Railway Station which had claimed 36 lives. Police vehicles fitted with public address systems announced the imposition of curfew late last night and asked people not to venture out of their homes. A police spokesman said the curfew has been clamped as a precautionary measure. Police and paramilitary CRPF were deployed in large numbers across the city and all roads leading to Eidgah in old city were sealed off. JAMMU: Pakistani troops fired at Indian posts on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district late Thursday, an army spokesperson said Friday. “There has been a ceasefire violation by Pakistan troops on the LoC in the Krishna Ghati sector in Poonch without any provocation from Indian side Thursday night,” an army spokesperson said. The Pakistan firing came hours after the Indian Army killed an infiltrator in Jhangar sector in Rajouri district Thursday. “Pakistani troops opened unprovoked firing with small arms and light and heavy automatic weapons. The firing lasted for more than one hour,” he said. The Indian troops “exercised utmost restraint” and response to the Pakistan fire, though controlled, was effective. There was no casualty in the Indian side, added the army official. Ties between the two neighbours have been strained.

Padma Shri Dr Moopen, Chairman of Dubai-based DM Healthcare and founder of Dr Moopen’s Foundation, announced this as part of ‘Save the Little Hearts’ programme, which will help facilitate heart surgery for needy children in the Philippines. He said the group’s initiative is to give back to the Filipino community “that is integral to our growth, success and quality.” Around 20 per cent of the employees of the group are from the Philippines. Commenting on the initiative, Philippines President Benigno Aquino said, “this charitable venture is a gift that our people will cherish. The cardiac surgery to our underprivileged youth will indeed empower them to sustain their vigour and help their families.”

HAGEL’S LONG WAIT

Triumph returns after horror trip

MOBILE, ALABAMA: The stricken Carnival cruise ship Triumph arrived back in port late Thursday, ending a nightmarish ocean voyage for some 4,000 desperate passengers and crew after it lost power over the weekend. At a little after 0300 GMT

Friday, the crippled ship inched into the port in Mobile, Alabama, after being towed here by a flotilla of tugboats. What was supposed to have been a pleasurable excursion in the Gulf of Mexico turned into a hellish ordeal after an engine room fire on Sunday left the

ship without the power needed to prepare meals or flush toilets. A flotilla of tugboats was pulling the massive ocean liner into port, in an operation that took longer than anticipated because of a delay when the towline for one of the boats snapped and had to be replaced.

Some of the passengers on the Triumph, which is operated by Florida-based Carnival Cruise Lines, signaled news media helicopters with "SOS" messages scrawled on sheets, desperate to flee the stench and mess that they had endured for four days.

LA MANHUNT

‘Cop-killers’ remains identified: Sherrif

The 33-year-old alleged cop-killer was cornered after a six-day manhunt in the cabin near the Big Bear ski resort, two hours east of Los Angeles. MICHAEL THURSTON Agence France-Presse LOS ANGELES: Human remains found in a burnt-out mountain cabin in California have been confirmed as those of alleged cop-killer Christopher Dorner, the local sheriff and coroner's office said Thursday. The 33-year-old was cornered Tuesday after a six-day manhunt in the cabin near the Big Bear ski resort, two hours east of Los Angeles. Authorities in San Bernardino County used dental records to positively identify his remains. He was believed to have died amid fierce gunfire after SWAT marksmen surrounded the cabin, which was set alight after police threw pyrotechnic tear gas into it. It was not known if he died from gunfire or the blaze.

The ex-Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) cop went on the run last week after allegedly killing a couple and a policeman, and wounding three people. Another officer was killed and one wounded before the cabin blaze. Dorner had posted a chilling

online manifesto in which he threatened to kill policemen and their families, and blamed the LAPD for treating him unfairly in his sacking in 2008. The manhunt came to a climax Tuesday in a cabin near the snow-covered ski resort, after Dorner was spotted in a stolen

vehicle, and fled on foot after crashing one vehicle and carjacking another. LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and LAPD chief Charlie Beck meanwhile said authorities were considering whether anyone is eligible for a $1 million reward offered for information leading to Dorner. The most likely claimants appear to be a couple who were tied up in their cabin by Dorner before he stole their truck, and a motorist who had his vehicle carjacked after the fugitive excop crashed the first stolen vehicle. "More than 20 jurisdictions and entities are involved in this reward, so all of them will be coming together to collectively determine whether any individual or individuals qualify for it," they said in a joint statement. "Our personal hope is that the reward will be distributed.”

WASHINGTON: The US and the UN called for free elections in the Maldives, after the Indian Ocean archipelago's former leader took refuge in the Indian embassy. TOKYO: Three Chinese government ships entered disputed waters, the Japanese coastguard said, as the two countries' soured relationship grew more complex following North Korea's nuclear test. Maritime surveillance vessels sailed near the Japanese-controlled Senkaku islands, which Beijing claims as the Diaoyus.

SYDNEY: Mossad went into crisis mode when it heard the ‘Prisoner X’ story was about to break, the Australian reporter responsible said. The prisoner, identified by media as Australian-Israeli Mossad agent Ben Zygier, died in December 2010 while in isolation at Ayalon prison near Tel Aviv, in a case Israel went to extreme lengths to cover up.

BRASILIA: A private association has filed a lawsuit in the wake of a fatal Brazil nightclub fire, demanding $1.5 million for each family of the 239 victims, a lawyer said. The Anecol group filed the suit against the Kiss club's owners, members of the band that allegedly triggered the tragedy and the town of Santa Maria where the disco is located.

WASHINGTON: US Senate Republicans ignored a White House demand for a vote to confirm President Barack Obama's pick for defense chief, throwing up a roadblock at a time of rising national security tensions. Democrats fell one vote short of overcoming the procedural delay and clearing the way for final consideration of Chuck Hagel. Republicans had sought time to study responses to questions that they said remained unanswered.

hat would appear at first glance to be a cakewalk for a staunch conservative, to follow in the footsteps of Pope Benedict XVI, will be anything but Vatican experts say. Of the 117 cardinal electors, 67 were named by the outgoing pontiff, and the other 50 by his beloved predecessor and ideological soulmate John Paul II. More than half of them are European including 28 Italians, which points strongly to a successor in the same mould as Benedict, who yearned for a rebirth of Christian faith on the Old Continent. But the arithmetic is misleading, given the water that has flowed under the bridges of the Tiber since the 2005 conclave that elevated the Polish pope’s German protege after just four voting sessions. The gaffes and scandals that came to characterise Benedict’s papacy, combined with unflattering comparisons between the introverted German and the charismatic Pole, have laid the foundations for divisions and dissent. Insiders have pointed to the “Vatileaks” scandal, in which the pope’s butler stole documents containing revelations about corruption and mismanagement that turned up in a tell-all book, as the last straw. When they gather for the conclave in midMarch, the cardinals will be under pressure to choose a reformer, someone to fix the “central machinery” of the Curia, said Sandro Magister, a Vatican expert and staunch supporter of Benedict who writes for the Italian weekly L’Espresso.

ong targeted during the country’s sectarian war, Iraq’s best hairdressers and beauticians have held a festival in central Baghdad to show their talents, a symbolic move to break with years of fear. The event, officially called the Make-up, Hairdressing and Fashion Show, was organised over the weekend in the small Sadeer Hotel in Andalus Square, the first of its kind since the 2003 US-led invasion and its violent aftermath. It is the latest in a series of efforts by the Iraqi capital’s residents to benefit from a decline in violence from its peak in 2006 and 2007 and restore Baghdad, once a dynamic and liberal city in the Middle East. “The most important thing about this festival is spotlighting the brightness of Iraqi women, which has gone unseen by the world," said Nadya Hamza Fuad, one of the organisers. “This is a first for us after the events of 2003," she said. “We see it as a first step towards achieving success." “Darkness used to dominate, and the light of beauty was

extinguished 10 years ago, especially in women’s salons. Society has been held back because of the dark period." The festival, sponsored by Iraq’s Labour and Tourism Syndicate, brought together a handful of shy participants, upon whom beauticians and hairdressers showcased their talents, and a crowd of onlookers in two conference rooms in the hotel where the festival was held. In one of the conference rooms, experts showed aspiring beauticians tricks of the trade and best practices, while in the other, a small platform was set up where three top hairdressers displayed their skills in front of onlookers before their subjects walked across an adjoining cat-

walk. It marked a sharp difference from the climate that once prevailed in the country, when tens of thousands were killed in the insurgency and sectarian war that followed the invasion that ousted now-executed dictator Saddam Hussein. Religious extremists in particular targeted hairdressers, most of whom closed their shops in fear. Women, few of whom were veiled pre-2003, were suddenly forced to cover themselves and stay at home. “We sat behind locked doors and nobody used to see us — only our customers," lamented Najim Ashur, owner of a beauty and hairdressing academy and one of Iraq’s best-known hairdressers. “Our art in Iraq got sick, but

it did not die," he said. Violence has dropped dramatically since that period, but attacks are still common and Baghdad remains one of the world’s most dangerous cities. Among the beauticians exhibiting their talents was Ali Bulbul, who has more than 30 years’ experience doing makeup for television broadcasters and now runs a one-stop beauty centre in central Baghdad which he opened in late 2011. “We hope this movement will continue, and become acceptable to the Iraqi people again," said Bulbul, who left Iraq in 1990, after Saddam Hussein invaded neighbouring Kuwait. He returned for good in 2005, resuming as a television make-up artist. Despite the positive atmosphere, attendees acknowledged that much remained to be done, with Iraqi actress Meelad Sirri noting that “there is some confusion, and there needs to be greater attendance, and more styles on display". “But it was generally good," she said. “We did not have any opportunities because of society and circumstances, but girls want to imitate fashions around the world," said Suad Taha, a 20year-old who was undergoing a makeover. “This festival is a chance for Iraqi girls to show their beauty — that reflects the beauty of Iraq."

EDITORIALS Bikinis and baby bumps

A

fresh row has risen over the publishing of pictures in which Kate Middleton’s baby bump can be seen. She, dressed in blue bikini, is seen strolling on a beach with her husband Prince William. The tabloid that published the pictures carries the headline “Kate Shows Off Her Bump!” — the truth is the duchess of Cambridge “knew not” that she was being secretly photographed. And her statements denouncing the tabloid make it more than clear she was not “showing off” at all. Already there had been an uproar about her topless pictures which a French publication splashed on their pages. The latest invasion of royal privacy has set off fresh debates about the ethics of journalism. The truth is there are no ethics any more. Among the many voices heard yet is what is happening to “popular journalism” and the irony of British papers not being able to carry pictures of

READERS’ VIEWS

their royal family (whether they are in their underclothes or without them is not the question or how it was taken) when some foreign rag gets to do it. Popular journalism? What is that? What’s its purpose? Okay, popular journalism exists and there are people who thrive on it: actors, socialites and many others who are more than happy to strike a pose or say something stupid, but there are others who may be popular, but are very and happy to lead normal lives. Doing an “Angelina Jolie” is the last thing on their minds. They would rather die than do what people like Kim Kardashian did and do for fame. Middleton is not Beyonce who posed with her baby bump for all to see at the end of her performance. Middleton may be a Princess, but she is entitled to her privacy. And publishing semi-naked pictures of people taken without their knowledge is anything but journalism.

reviously in the Zone we celebrated the birth of the greatest rock band ever, and the circumstances that elevated guitarist Jimmy Page to godlike status — godlike because, to misquote Captain America, “There’s only one God, and I’m sure he doesn’t dress like that!” When they recorded their first album Zep concentrated to a large extent on reinterpreting blues/folk standards, with only two new songs to be heard. The fact that they took full writing honours for all the tracks has resulted in some controversy over the last 40 odd years. A very weak reason which I happen to like is ‘Hey Man, it’s 1969, did I hear it or did I write it? If you can remember you weren’t there!’ On a positive note most of the original writers have now been credited. Looking beyond positive it could be argued that Zeppelin’s use of these songs have given the original artists the type of exposure, nay immortality they may never have realistically achieved if their music hadn’t been subjected to the magic. Hats off to, among others, Bukka White, Sleepy John Estes and Blind Willie Johnson. Later in ‘69 saw the release of Led Zeppelin II which regularly appears in the polls of the greatest, most influential rock albums. Both albums were slated by the critics, most notably in Rolling Stone, but to put this into historical perspective it’s worth noting the biggest selling single of 1969 was Sugar Sugar by the Archies...no further comment. Roll in 1970, and Led Zeppelin III. This album revealed a more mellow relaxed style which seems to have taken everyone by surprise, confusing fans and critics alike. Despite kicking off with the thundering Immigrant Song and containing the magnificent blues licks and tricks in Since I’ve Been Loving You Zep were seen to have gone, well, Hippy. Robert Plant was aghast at being described as “a faded flower child.” Early ‘71 and Page, already a serious collector of the works of The Great Beast, bought Aleister Crowleys former home Boleskine, situated in Scotland on the banks of Loch Ness. Could it be that the guitar maestro was attracted to the Magus due to them both being demonised by the press? Crowley was famously described (by bondage afficionado Lord Beaverbrook) as “The Wickedest

Man in the World”. Some 40 years on and Page was called “depressingly antiquated”, Led Zeppelin was “a tool of authoritarian control” and Zep fans were “heavy dope fiends”. Led Zeppelins popularity was due to “heavy hype”. Perfect time to release the Kraken! After much negotiation with nervous record executives the fourth album, known as Led Zeppelin IV, Four Symbols or Four Runes was released with absolutely no lettering on the cover. No band name, no title not even a catalogue number. This was a huge thing, remember 1971 had no search engines, there was no advertising, I clearly remember standing in Taste Records looking at the picture of the old man bowed under a pile of sticks thinking WTF! Opening the gatefold album cover didn’t help, again no lettering, you were greeted by the now legendary 12”x24” illustration “View in Half or Varying Light” by artist Barrington Colby, depicting a Hermit on top of a hill holding aloft a lantern. To find out what you were buying you had to take the cover to the counter, hand over two quid (around 40 rupees at 1971 exchange rates) and the inner cover containing the vinyl was slipped in. Asking the man with the big hair and the fat cigarette wasn’t an option, you had to pretend you knew what you were buying! Magical times! The inner sleeve reveals the famous four symbols, three interlocked circles for John Bonham, three ellipses bisected by a circle for John Paul Jones, a feather inside a circle for Robert Plant (all taken from Robert Kochs The Book of Signs) and the specially designed Jimmy Page symbol, popularly known as ZoSo. You weren’t so much buying an album as buying into a lifestyle, becoming a LedHed meant crossing a line. Returning home with a Zeppelin album was as controversial as walking in with a full face tattoo! Fantastic! Singer Sandy Denny had the honour of being named next to a fifth symbol, three triangles, with production credits naming Jimmy Page and Peter Grant. Turn the inner sleeve over and you find the lyrics to one song, the fourth track on the fourth album, Stairway to Heaven. The most popular rock song ever, the most requested song on American FM radio, a song estimated to have received over 60 years of airplay in the 42 years since it was released. Four years after the birth and Led Zeppelin are flying high, leaving all pretenders flailing in their slipstream. Does anyone remember... laughter?

JOSH GROBAN Josh Groban’s All That Echoes arrives at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this week, selling 145,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It’s the singer’s third No. 1 album, following 2003’s Closer and 2007’s top seller, Noel. His last studio release, 2010’s Illuminations, debuted and peaked at No. 4 with 191,000 sold in its first week. Groban is one of the few artists in the past year to earn a No. 1 album without ever having a top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

here are people who avoid exercise like the plague during pregnancy. But experts say proper exercise at this time strengthens muscles, reduces stress levels, and helps in normal delivery. Fitness routines differ, depending on your health and the trimester. According to pregnancy.familyeducation. com, when the mother exercises during pregnancy, the baby grows up to have better stress tolerance, apart from improved cardiovascular function, fitness and quicker recovery. “We teach pranayama, or different kinds of breathing, that help during delivery and ensure that the baby doesn’t go into distress,” said K Latika, yoga therapist at Omkar Studio. She specialises in pre-natal therapy. “All the asanas strengthen the birthing muscles, prevent prenatal and postnatal depression, and help the mother come back to good health faster.” She said yoga helps the endocrine and nervous systems, and helps to prevent conditions like thyroid and gestational diabetes. “Everything is connected to the breathing,” she said. Chandra bheda, surya bheda, peetali and nadishodana are some of the breathing exercises she teaches in the group sessions. Baddha konasana (sitting posture), upavishtha konasan (wide angle bending while sitting) and chakravakasana, are some of the asanas that are taught. “It helps the

It can go up to 50 per cent of the maximum heart rate,” said Chandrashekhar Reddy, master trainer at Helios Fitness Centre. “The exercises are trimester wise, and differ with the heart rate.” He said weights can be done, with longer breaks in between. “Flexing of the knee and hip should be avoided. Fast, unsupported flexibility exercises should be avoided. Lying down on the stomach should also be avoided.” He recommended Kegel exercises. According to WebMd, Kegel exercises strengthen muscles that support the bladder, uterus, and bowels. The site also recommends ‘tailor exercises,’ (tailor sit and tailor press) for the pelvic, hip, and thigh muscles, which relieves lower back pain, and ‘stretching exercises’ like neck rotation, thigh shift, leg shake and ankle rotation. Reddy said during the final trimester, only weights on alternate days is recommended, along with moderate walking.

Morquio syndrome is an inherited disease of metabolism in which the body is missing or doesn’t have enough of a substance needed to break down long chains of sugar molecules called glycosaminoglycans. Your insides like your organs grow but your body does not. So you die at an early age. One example would be if the body does not grow but the heart grows too big for the body to hold, causing death.

The brain is composed of 85% is water and on average comprises 2 percent of the total body weight yet it requires 25 percent of all oxygen used, as opposed to 7 percent by the heart. Cholesterol makes up 15 percent of the brain by dry weight. The brain is more active sleeping than it is watching TV.

Michael DeBakey graduated from the Tulane University School of Medicine in 1932 and, later that year, began inventing surgical devices and the modes in which to use them. He was awarded many honours for his achievements, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction and the Presidential National Medal of Science. He created the “roller pump,” a device that provided blood flow during surgeries.

BREAKTHROUGH

A molecule that suppress liver tumours

JAPAN RESEARCHERS

close in on stem cell trial

TOKYO: Researchers in Japan have moved one step closer to clinical trials using adult stem cells in a therapy they hope will prove a cure for common sight problems, an official said Thursday. The ethics committee at the Institute for Biomedical Research and Innovation in Kobe, west Japan, on Wednesday approved a trial treatment for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) cells. The trial is aimed at creating retinal cells that can be transplanted into the eyes of patients suffering from AMD, a presently incurable disease that affects mostly middle-aged and older people and can lead to blindness. The institute, together with the government-backed research institute Riken, “will submit an application for a clinical trial with Riken to the Health Ministry by the end of next month,” hospital official Kosuke Nagi told AFP. If a clinical trial using iPS cells is approved, it “would be the first ever,” a health ministry official said, adding a trial using embryonic stem cells — harvested from human embryos — had been undertaken by a US firm. The ministry’s deliberation process will take a few months before approval, the official said. Stem cells — infant cells that develop into the specialised tissues of the body — have sparked great excitement because they offer the chance of rebuilding organs damaged by

STUDY WASHINGTON: Folic acid supplements during early pregnancy could reduce risk of having a child with autism, says a study by Norwegian scientists. Women who took folic acid supplements in early pregnancy almost halved the risk of having a child with autism. Beginning to take folic acid supplements later in pregnancy did not reduce the risk. This is shown in new findings from the ABC Study and Norwegian Mother and Child

WASHINGTON: A key molecule identified as IQGAP1 can suppress growth of liver tumours by altering the microenvironment against cancer cells, reveals a new finding. The finding offers new insight into cancer metastasis, the ability of a tumour to spread from its primary site to distant organs such as the brain, lung or liver. The discovery paves the way to newer therapies for preventing or treating liver metastases, the major cause of death from cancer. “Tumour cells are intelligent - they talk to the cells in their surroundings to change the way they behave and make the environment supportive of cancer growth,” said senior study author Ningling Kang, biochemist and molecular biologist at Mayo Clinic Cancer Centre, the Journal of Clinical Investigation reports.

disease or accident. Until fairly recently, the only way to obtain stem cells was to harvest them from embryos. Religious conservatives, amongst others, have objected to research on human embryonic stem cells because they hold that the destruction of a foetus, necessary for the harvest, is wrong.

The Japanese government plans to earmark 110 billion yen for research towards the clinical use of iPS cells. But pioneering work done in 2006 by Shinya Yamanaka at Kyoto University, a Nobel Laureate in medicine last year, succeeded in generating stem cells from skin tissue. Like embryonic stem cells, iPS cells are also capable of developing into any cell in the body, but crucially their source material is readily available. Yamanaka has called for the government to support his research financially, running in a charity marathon to raise funds in 2011, but his Nobel Prize has significantly boosted his clout and the issue enjoys widespread public support in Japan. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said last month his government will earmark 110 billion yen ($1.18 billion) yen for research towards the clinical use of iPS cells. AFP

The trial is aimed at creating retinal cells that can be transplanted into the eyes of patients suffering from AMD, a presently incurable disease that affects mostly middle-aged and older people and can lead to blindness.

Folic acid lowers risk of autistic child Cohort Study published in the Journal of The American Medical Association (JAMA). Women who took folic acid supplements from four weeks before conception to eight weeks into pregnancy had a 40 percent lower risk of giving birth to children with childhood autism (classic autism). Use of folic acid supplements midway through pregnancy (week 22) had no effect,

reports Science Daily. “It appears that the reduced risk of childhood autism only reflects folic acid supplements, not food or other supplements, and that the crucial time interval is from four weeks before conception to eight weeks into pregnancy,” said Pal Suren, primary author of the paper and researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. IANS

“If we can disrupt the communication between the tumour cells and the tumour micro-environment, we can prevent tumour growth or metastasis in the liver,” Kang was quoted as saying in a Mayo Clinic statement. To study the effects of IQGAP1, which controls the shape and movement of cells, Kang and her colleagues implanted tumour cells into the livers of mice genetically engineered to lack the molecule. The implanted tumour cells still had the molecule, but the cells that made up the tumour microenvironment did not. When researchers compared the progression of cancer between mutant and normal mice, they found that mice without the molecule developed more liver metastases. Kang and colleagues showed that IQGAP1 interacts with and suppresses a powerful signalling molecule called TGF-beta receptor that tells normal cells that surround a tumour cell to become tumour-promoting cells. there was no fashion industry. In a way we created the fashion industry. There is a certain joy when you do that,” he reminisces. On the Indian fashion industry’s stand in the global market he emphasises on the need for funds to flow in and make it big. “Louis Vuitton was a single man making clothes in a small shop in Paris until a conglomerate took over and we all know where it is today. Same story with Jimmy Choo who was making shoes in East London until someone came with money and took it to the next level. This is yet to happen in Indian and it will happen soon,” he says with conviction. With national designer brands

J Valaya who started his career in the early 90s, is now essentially known for the regality he creates through his garments. Taking inspiration from the royal eras that are rich in history, he crafts pieces that justify both the old and new worlds. “I like to recreate from those eras. The challenge is how to make it relevant to the now. That’s when you bring in the modern elements. So you contradict. You mix the old and the new,” he explains. Claiming to be a custodian of craft, he comments on the current fashion sense lacking individuality and the need to understand that

craft is happening and hip. “How we look down upon Hindi, we do the same to these crafts. Only if a gora comes and works with Indian embroidery, we wear it. I strongly believe if we lose what we have, we will never find it again,” he says. When he had just graduated from NIFT in 1991, the fashion industry was hardly anything like what it is now. There were no TV channels or reporters covering fashion, there was no Internet and it is safe to say there was no customer as well. “We were one of the first ones in the industry. We began our careers when

such as Tarun Tahiliani, Sabyasachi and Shantanu & Nikhil setting up flagship stores in Hyderabad, is the city anywhere close to being a hub for fashion? “It is not blooming but it is getting there. It has to have a completely new generation of buyers, and a large number at that, too. There are two cities in India—Hyderabad and Ludhiana which have a mindset that says, ‘If it is available here, it is not good enough’. People here will go everywhere else looking for something that is available in their own city,” he laughs. For a man of his stature and accomplishment, JJ Valaya easily surprises you with his humility and simplicity and just when you hardly expect him to say, “I feel I have started only yesterday. There is so much more to do,” he does and very convincingly so.

KAKURO How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column refer-

QUICK CROSSWORD enced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so

on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

T

he year 2000 was a major turning point for Asian cinema. For almost four decades, Asian cinema was associated with names like Akira Kurosawa, Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan and it took an extraordinary film by a Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee to look beyond the usual menu of clichés associated with films from China in particular. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was a groundbreaking hit across the world and Ang Lee was nominated for an Academy Award and won a BAFTA and Golden Globe. The film gave a major push to his career which had taken off few years ago with his adaptation of Sense & Sensibility. In his career spanning more than 20 years, Ang Lee directed 13 films which boast of scoring 38 Academy nominations, 49 BAFTA and 23 Golden Globe nominations on the whole. Although, he isn’t considered to be an art house film-maker, his films have often dealt with issues which are primarily associated with Chinese and Taiwanese cultures. The first three films of his career Pushing Hands, The Wedding Banquet and Eat Drink Man Woman were about the clash between generations and post the success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, he went on to make his first superhero film Hulk starring Eric Bana. In 2005, Ang Lee made Brokeback Mountain, a romantic drama about two gay cowboys in Wyoming, which was a surprise hit of the year. The film sparked intense debate in US about the portrayal of homosexuality in films and it was also widely parodied. Nevertheless, Ang Lee bagged his first Best Director Oscar award for it and he became the first director of Asian origin to win the award. His obsession with literature is quite evident from the fact that most of the films in his career have been adapted from books. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was based on a novel named Crane Iron Pentalogy, written by Wang Dulu, Brokeback Mountain is an adaptation of a short story of the same name written by Annie Proulx and his latest film Life

The sensibiliity of Ang Lee

of Pi is based on Yann Martel’s book. Perhaps, the most disturbing film in his career so far is the 2007 film Lust, Caution, which is about a group of students from the Lingnan University who plot to assassinate a government official with the help of a young woman. More than its setting and depiction of sex, what stood out in the film was the moral crisis which the young woman goes through as she’s torn between serving her country and using her body to do so. Right from Pushing Hands to his latest film Life of Pi, Ang Lee’s films have been about choices people make. Even Hulk, which was Ang Lee’s first big budget film, the director gave a new twist to the emotional crisis with the superhero goes through.

I'm a drifter and an outsider. There's not one single environment I can totally belong to. My cultural roots are something illusive. Ang Lee is the biggest cultural export from Asia since the time of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. His films have broken stereotypes associated with Asian cinema, dabbling with themes like alienation, clash of traditions — and most importantly the choices people make.

Ang Lee film-maker Life of Pi is certainly his most ambitious film till date and the visual imagery which he managed to create in the film has left us gasping for words. Ang Lee’s acceptance across the world opened doors for several other Chinese film-makers and actors like Chow Yun-Fat, Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi and Zhang Yimou. Unlike other film-makers from Asia, Ang Lee managed to crossover to Hollywood, yet he sees himself as an outsider. “I'm a drifter and an outsider. There's not one single environment I can totally belong to. My cultural roots are something illusive,” he remarked once. No wonder, he has explored so much through cinema over the years.

That victory in Atlantic City saw Broner improve to 25-0 with

NOT THE CHEAT’S WAY

Doping in golf not a problem: Garcia REBECCA BRYAN Agence France-Presse LOS ANGELES: Spain’s Sergio Garcia (right) says doping isn’t a big problem in professional golf because performance-enhancing drugs aren’t as helpful in the game as in other sports. Garcia, who counts Rafael Nadal among his friends, was asked Thursday at the US PGA Tour’s Northern Trust Open what he thought of current calls in the tennis world for more stringent testing to keep their sport clean. “Obviously, you can’t control everyone but I feel like golf has always been in a good state when it comes down to that,” Garcia said. “It’s not the kind of sport that needs so much when it

comes to enhancing drugs.” Debate on how to counter doping has intensified in the wake of cyclist Lance Armstrong’s long-delayed admission last month that he used performanceenhancing drugs in all seven of his Tour de France victories. AFP

QATAR OPEN

Victoria’s double bagel Victoria Azarenka stormed into the Qatar Open quarter-finals with a ruthless 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Christina McHale. DOHA: World number one Victoria Azarenka (in pic) stormed into the Qatar Open quarter-finals on Thursday with a ruthless 6-0, 6-0 triumph over highlyregarded Christina McHale. Defending champion Azarenka, who is at risk of losing her top ranking to Serena Williams this week, produced a relentlessly forcing performance over McHale, a 20-yearold who has already posted seven victories over top 10 opponents. The top-seeded Belarussian needed little more than an hour to remove the unfortunate American from her path into the last eight, a performance whose control, aggression, and intensity was all the more stun-

ning for happening amidst swirling conditions where consistency was difficult to achieve. The way in which Azarenka completed the Valentine’s Day rout also suggested that she

may well be the genuine favourite to retain her Qatar Open title, as a sequel to her gutsy retention of the Australian Open title last month. AFP

BRAZIL OPEN

Nadal sails into 2nd round Rafael Nadal cruised to a two-set victory in his singles debut at the Brazil Open but then blasted the ATP Tour for its choice of balls. SAO PAULO: Spain’s Rafael Nadal cruised to a two-set victory in his singles debut at the Brazil Open here late Thursday but then the 11-time grand slam winner blasted the ATP Tour for its choice of balls. The former world number one needed only 78 minutes to prevail over Brazilian Joao Souza, ranked 140th in the world, 6-3, 6-4. Nadal advanced to Friday’s quarter-finals where he will face Argentine Carlos Berlocq, who beat eighth seed Albert Ramos 7-6 (9/7), 6-4. “It was an important victory for me,” Nadal said. “the conditions are very difficult. The court is very fast, the ball too. “The problem is not the court. The

problem is the ball which is very bad,” he added. The 26-year-old Spanish star said the Brazilian organizers of the event were not to blame. “It’s the fault of the ATP for allowing play with a (tennis) ball of poor quality. The ATP does not have the capacity or the infrastructure to be able to analyze the conditions before the tournament begins,” he added. He said he made a “good decision” by withdrawing Wednesday from a scheduled doubles match he was to have played with Argentina’s David Nalbandian against Argentine Horacio Zeballos and Austrian Oliver Marach. Nadal said he was able to rest his knee, after a tough week of play in

Chile last week, and made clear that his priority here was to play the singles event. The $455,775 Brazil Open is part of the Latin American clay court circuit, along with the Vina del Mar and the Mexico Open in Acapulco where Nadal plans to play later this month. He said he did not feel any particular discomfort during the match. “I was more or less OK, perfect no. I am in a process of recovery,” he noted. “The important thing is to have regularity, to be able to compete. I am confident that with the days and weeks, I will regain what I am missing.” AFP

US PGA TOUR NORTHERN TRUST OPEN my first three and all were kick-in birdies -- I think all within probably four feet.” Garcia, runner-up at the European Tour’s Qatar Masters last month, teed off on 10 and also opened with three birdies. His lone bogey of the day came at the 13th, and he picked up four more birdies on his inward run -capping his 65 with a birdie at the ninth as fog from the Pacific Ocean drifted across the course that had been bathed in sunshine all day.

Kuchar races to Riviera lead

LOS ANGELES: Matt Kuchar (right) fired a bogeyfree seven-under par 64 on Thursday to seize a onestroke lead over Spain’s Sergio Garcia in the first round of the $6.6 million US PGA Tour Northern Trust Open. Kuchar’s seven birdies on the par-71 Riviera Country Club lay-out included three to open his round. “I got off to a great start,” the four-time winner on the US PGA Tour said. “Birdied

Love is all around me: Sharapova

DOHA: Maria Sharapova sounded like the most prolific romantic of all the female tennis players on Valentine’s Day by suggesting that she had many lovers. The highest paid female athlete hinted — perhaps tongue in cheek — that she might also have the highest sex drive. True or not, her reply outdid that of all the other players at the Qatar Open on Thursday. Asked if she was celebrating Valentine’s Day with the one she loved, Sharapova said: “Well, I’m in Doha, so my team consists of my coach and my trainer, and my hitter and my physio. I don’t have a love relationship with either one of them, so......” and she tailed off amidst laughter.

ROTTERDAM WORLD TENNIS

PAK IN SOUTH AFRICA

Fedex reaches quarters Roger Federer moved swiftly into the quarter-finals of the Rotterdam World Tennis tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 win over home hope Thiemo de Bakker. SCOTT WILLIAMS Agence France-Presse ROTTERDAM: Two-time champion Roger Federer moved swiftly into the quarter-finals of the Rotterdam World Tennis tournament on Thursday with a 6-3, 6-4 win over home hope Thiemo de Bakker. The 62-minute victory sent the Swiss top seed into a Friday clash with Frenchman Julien Benneteau who he will be facing for the sixth time. World number two Federer is playing in Rotterdam for the eighth time and has never gone out before the quarters, winning titles in 2005 and 2012. “I’m happy, the conditions are very quick and Thiemo is a dangerous opponent,” said

Federer. “I’m glad to go through and be in the quarter-finals again. It was a good win.” Second seed Juan Martin Del Potro said he’s not envious of the world top four as the big Argentine beat qualifier Ernests Gulbis 7-6 (7/5), 6-3. “I know that I can improve,” said the seventh-ranked 2009 US Open champion, who next faces Jarkko Nieminen after the Finn dispatched German qualifier Matthias Bachinger 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. “But the top four are there for a reason, they are playing better than me, I know that I can beat them, but I need to improve my level. That’s what I’m working on, like trying to come to the net more.” AFP

Younis, Shafiq hit centuries

CAPE TOWN: Centuries by Younis Khan and Asad Shafiq transformed Pakistan’s fortunes on the first day of the second Test against South Africa on Thursday. Pakistan were 253 for five at stumps, having been reeling at 33 for four after being sent in. Younis was caught behind off Vernon Philander 13 balls before the close for 111, while Shafiq was unbeaten, also on 111. The pair put on 219, a record partnership for any wicket by Pakistan against South Africa. It was a remarkable turnaround after the South African fast bowlers scythed through their top order early in the day. Pakistan seemed in danger of another humiliation following their dismissal for a record low of 49 on the way to a 211-run defeat in the first Test. “After the first Test match we had a lot of meetings and chats about how we play Test cricket,” said Younis. Advani makes history Force India insulated

NEWPORT: Pankaj Advani (above) on Thursday became the first Indian snooker player to reach the quarter-finals of a world ranking event when he defeated Graeme Dott 4-1 at the Welsh Open.

The 27-year-old followed up his 4-3 defeat of Shaun Murphy by knocking out another former world champ to set-up a lasteight clash against Judd Trump. “I knew I had the chance to make history,” said Advani,

a former world billiards champion. “That caused me to a miss a ball or two so I just tried to make sure I was focussed on what was happening. When you are in the balls you are in control; pressure is only selfcreated.” Breaks of 63 and 73 put him 2-0 up on Dott, and although the Scot took the third frame, Advani was not to be denied as he took a scrappy fourth then finished with a superb break of 100. “I am surprising myself with this run but I’m just going with the flow and trying to keep winning. It’s exciting to be playing against the best in the world, at the top level and under the best conditions,” added the Indian player. AFP

from Mallya: Team

LONDON: Force India insisted Thursday its Grand Prix team would be able to carry on despite co-owner Vijay Mallya’s (left) financial problems. Shares in Indian businessman Mallya’s debt-laden Kingfisher Airlines plunged Wednesday after banks said they would start recalling loans worth $1.5 billion. Mallya, though, expected to recoup funds from the $2 billion sale of a majority stake in India’s United Spirits but the deal must still clear regulatory hurdles. Despite its name, the Force India Grand Prix team is based at the nerve centre of British Formula One at the Silverstone track in central England. AFP

SPORTS BRIEFS Serena closes in on return to top spot

Froome seizes lead

Del Potro targets big four breakthrough

DOHA: Serena Williams needs only one more win to become world number one for the first time in two-and-a-half years after reaching the quarters of the Qatar Open in double quick time on Thursday. It took her less than an hour to complete a 6-0, 6-3 win over Urszula Radwanska, the world number 37 from Poland, and to take herself to the brink of another remarkable achievement. A year ago, after a series of injuries, Williams’ career seemed in danger. After triumphs at Wimbledon, US Open and Olympics, and struggling against ankle and back injuries, she is almost back to where many believe she deserves to be — at the top again.

DJEBEL AKHDHAR, OMAN: Spain’s Joaquim Rodriguez, of the Katusha team, won the fourth stage of the Tour of Oman on Thursday, as Britain’s Chris Froome snatched the overall leader’s red jersey. Rodriguez was victorious on the mountaintop finish to the 143km stage, finishing four seconds ahead of Froome, of Sky, and 22 seconds in front of Australia’s Cadel Evans of the BMC team. Rodriguez’s compatriot Alberto Contador was fourth, 27 seconds back. In the overall standings, Froome took the red jersey from Slovakia’s Peter Sagan and now leads by a margin of 24 seconds from Evans and 25 seconds from Contador.

ROTTERDAM: Second seed Juan Martin Del Potro said he’s not envious of the world top four as the big Argentine reached the Rotterdam quarter-finals on Thursday with a 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 defeat of qualifier Ernests Gulbis. “I know that I can improve,” said the seventh-ranked 2009 US Open champion, who faces Jarkko Nieminen in the last eight after the Finn dispatched German qualifier Matthias Bachinger 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. “But the top four are there for a reason, they are playing better than me, I know that I can beat them, but I need to improve my level. That’s what I’m working on, like trying to come to the net more.”

EUROPA LEAGUE ROUND OF 32

Zenit outgun misfiring Liverpool PARIS: Liverpool were left to regret a string of missed chances as Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg completed a convincing 2-0 victory in their Europa League last-32, first leg match on Thursday. Two goals in three minutes midway through the second half turned the tide

in Zenit's favour after both sides had squandered a hatful of opportunities on a badly churned-up pitch in Russia's former Imperial capital. That makes the home leg at Anfield an uphill struggle, but disappointed Liverpool boss Brendan

Rodgers tried to put a brave face on the defeat. "I thought we looked solid and a threat going forward and could have been in the lead at half-time," he said. "But we gave away two poor goals tonight. We ended up losing the game when we should have won it." Big-money Brazilian signing Hulk (left) put the Russians ahead in the 69th minute with a blistering shot from the edge of the area which just clipped Martin Skrtel to wrong-foot Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina. Then on 72 minutes, Sergei Semak turned up the heat on Liverpool when he ghosted in behind Skrtel and Glenn Johson to arrive unmarked on the left to clinically dispatch Aleksandr Anyukov's cross from the right past Reina. For Liverpool, Luis Suarez was the chief culprit and could have a hat-trick in the first half alone but for some profligate finishing. AFP

FA CUP PREVIEW

Arsenal gear up for Blackburn test IAN WINROW Agence France-Presse LONDON: Per Mertesacker insists Arsenal will focus on Blackburn in the FA Cup on Saturday, just 72 hours before German giants Bayern Munich arrive in north London for a last 16 Champions League first leg clash. Arsene Wenger's side are targeting a first trophy since they won the FA Cup in 2005 and the meeting with Rovers coincides with an improved run of form. But Mertesacker, the Ars-

enal centre-back, has warned his team-mates they cannot allow their focus to be distracted if they want to progress in the domestic competition. "We still have an important cup game on Saturday first. We want to advance in the FA Cup, that is why the preparations for Bayern are not that intense yet," said the Germany international. "However, beginning on Sunday the preparations for Tuesday's match will be extreme. Bayern are doing superb this year and that is a big challenge for us.
