In Census-2001, the girl child sex ratio stood at 962 for 1,000 male children. That the State ought to give a big hand to the poor families having girl children is the verdict of the political pundits. The scheme was announced by the CM during a public meeting in Medak district recently. There was a huge cry of protest from his detractors, who took up the matter with the party high command in Delhi. MUMBAI: Maharashtra today became the second state after Tamil Nadu to replace traditional names of leucoderma to clear misconceptions about the cutaneous condition. “The illness has nothing to do with leprosy but is just a physiological condition,” health officials said. It is wrongly mentioned in some ancient Sanskrit literature as “shwet kusht”, they said, adding the use of words like “shwet kusht” or “kod” is henceforth banned. “Now onwards, it will be AROUND THE

But the sudden revolt put him on the back foot for a while. Thanks to the Census-2011 data, the CM can go ahead with his scheme with a genuine reason and shut the mouths of his detractors.”

What is Bangaru Talli?

s per the Bangaru Talli scheme, every girl child belonging to a poor family will begin to get cash benefits immediately after her birth. The State government will deposit `2,500 in the bank account of the girl’s mother immediately after her birth. From then on, till the girl attains the age of five, `1,500 would be given every year to the girl for her expenses in Anganwadi centres. A sum of `1,000 will be given to the girl child immediately on her admission to primary school and she will be entitled to get `2,000

every year for her studies from Classes I to V. She will be paid `2,500 each year from Classes VI to VIII, and `3,000 each for Classes IX and X. Once she enrols at an intermediate level course, the girl will be paid `3,500 per year and `4,000 for each of the three years of graduation. The State also has a provision if the girl stops her education after intermediate: She will be paid `50,000 towards marriage expenses and `1 lakh if she opts for marriage after graduation. The total cost the State would incur on each girl child would be `2.1 lakh.

An ex-serviceman, G Venkateshwar Rao, 62, a resident of Saidabad, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison on Wednesday night at Gurramguda village of Vanasthalipuram. He was apparently facing ﬁnancial hardships after his daughter’s marriage. Before he took his life, he had called his son-in-law to say he was bidding goodbye to life.

Nearly 10 tolas gold, one diamond ring and some cash were stolen from the house of Susheela Devi, a resident of Mettugada in Secunderabad. Devi and her family were away when their house was burgled on May 16. Thieves broke open the window and entered the house. Chikalguda police are investigating the case.

In the latest move, the Talwars have sought the summoning of 14 witnesses in the case, including former CBI official Arun Kumar. However, Supreme Court declined it.

‘Planet hunter’ Kepler breaks down ‘Not ready to call the mission over,’ officials say; scientists will try to fix the problem. WASHINGTON: NASA’s planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft appears to be hobbled by a faulty wheel and may be near the end of its four-year mission, space agency scientists said Wednesday. Kepler, a $600 million mission, was launched in 2009 on a search for other planets. So far, it has found 2,700 candidates, including a handful that may be habitable worlds, not too hot and

not too cold. The problem is a reaction wheel that keeps the spacecraft pointed but has stopped working, said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA. “We are not ready to call the mission over,” said Grunsfeld, adding that scientists are still going to try and figure out how to get the wheel restarted.

The problem was discovered on Tuesday, when the spacecraft went into a pre-programmed safe mode that kicks in “if the observatory has trouble knowing where it should point,” said Grunsfeld.

Scientists have been expecting that such a problem may arise, since the wheels have a limited lifespan and a different reaction wheel broke down in July. NASA has not turned that wheel, reaction wheel 2, back on since, and the spacecraft needs a minimum of three wheels to function in the way it was intended. Japan man, 80, starts Everest ascent TOKYO: An 80-year-old Japanese mountaineer has begun his ascent of Mount Everest, in a bid to become the oldest man to reach the roof of the world. In a voice message recorded on his website, Yuichiro Miura said the expedition was setting off on Thursday for a climb which could take over a week’s time. Miura is trying to get back a Guinness World Record that he first held in 2003 when he became the oldest man to climb Everest. But pedestrian rights groups are averse to the idea, citing various factors including women’s safety. It is after a gap of three decades that the GHMC will be trying to make subways. It has identified Afzal Gunj, Abids (Grammar School), Owaisi Hospital and Mehdipatnam as spots where there has been pedestrian problems for years. According to civic officials, the estimated cost for these subways would be `3.94 crore. “We have sent the project for administrative sanction to the government and detailed project report will be prepared after the GHMC gets the nod,” says superintending engineer R Sreedhar.

The estimated cost for the four subways, planned at Afzal Gunj, Abids, Owaisi Hospital and Mehdipatnam, would be `3.94 crore.

These subways are billed to relieve pedestrians from risking their lives while crossing the road. Shops along subways will assure commercial activity which will help keep it free from trouble, it is believed.

But civic organisations like Right2Walk have expressed disapproval of the subways. As she was waiting for the inspector, a girl who was identified as engaged to mediate on the matters with families came and told the woman that the inspector was very angry at her son and he would be arrested and beaten up. To prevent this, she suggested she pay `7,000 to the inspector. And having said her piece, she left the scene. When the inspector came, the mother cried and said she did not have `7,000 to pay. Surprised, the inspector asked her who demanded the money and the story came out. A search was conducted for the mediator and she was caught. It came out that her brother suggested the move. here are tiny sparkling dots, all evenly spaced, moving towards her slowly, like they are marching to a synchronised beat. Rashmi sinks into the soft earth, and continues staring. The lights get closer and she is engulfed by them. In a feeble attempt, she tries to get up, waving her arms to push the lights away, like they were mosquitoes. The more she struggles, the brighter they get. The sparks are soon inside her, in her skin, her throat, her ears... she watches herself start glowing as more of the light blinds her and she loses consciousness.

Ten months after SS Rajamouli’s Eega took the box-office by storm in Telugu and Tamil, the film is being screened at film festivals abroad.

ajamouli couldn’t be happier. Eega, his previous film which released in 2012, is flying to new shores across the world. After its theatrical release in India, US, UK, Canada and few other countries across the world last year, it was screened at select film festivals in US, Brazil and France. Now, the film has been invited to a lot more film festivals. First among the lot where Eega is going to make a pitstop is the film market at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival in France. Later, Eega will also be screened at Shanghai International Film Festival, Madrid International Film Festival and Puchon International Film Festival in South Korea. In fact, Rajamouli has stated that the film might be screened in more film festivals in the next few months. This is the first Telugu film in recent times which has been invited by organisers of several film festivals. “These are small steps in venturing into newer markets. Hoping we can make some kind of breakthroughs, however small they might be..(sic),” Rajamouli posted on Twitter. We couldn’t agree with him more.

Rashmi is belted to a steel chair and she tries to wrench free, very scared as to where she is. She screams for help, for Gautham, for her mom, for anyone to help her get out.

He watches helplessly as she gets covered in sparks and is then lifted away in a cloud into a dome across the hill. He tries to call her, and only hopes that the nightmare ends quickly. His or hers. He watches the alien spacecraft fly away and without a warning, it bursts into a bright flash of fireworks that lasts a while in the sky. He feels a sharp jab in his arm all of a sudden, and cold water splashes across his face! A metallic arm is shaking him wildly saying “Sorry, sorry!” With a jolt, he sits up straight. He is at the coffee house. The waiter is handing him paper napkins and apologising repeatedly. Gautham looks at him, slowly trying to realise what had just happened, when Rashmi turns the corner holding her coffee and chatting with a handsome young man who opens the door for her. As she steps out, she turns to free the stuck dupatta on the handle, and their eyes meet. She smiles, nods and walks straight out through the door as the guy puts his arm around her waist and they walk in step towards their parked car. News magazine Spiegel this week reported that a who’s who of big German, Swiss and US pharmaceutical companies made deals with the dictatorship to test medicines, sometimes without the knowledge of the patients. Several people were known to have died during trials, and some tests involved infants and delirious alcoholics, said the report on the agreements with the police state that collapsed with the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall. Major drugs companies, some of which have taken over other firms in corporate mergers since, insist they stuck to the standards and laws of the times. But calls have grown for full transparency into the agreements overseen by the State Security (Stasi) secret police to earn the communist state tens of millions in hard-currency Deutschmarks. “It was a nasty German-German deal” in which profits were made on both sides of the Berlin Wall, Stasi Archives Commissioner Roland Jahn, who was a dissident-journalist in the former German Democratic Republic, told the Zeit weekly on Thursday. “I am not surprised that medical tests were carried out in the GDR that didn’t meet the standards of democratic countries. ith the Obama administration fighting scandal on three fronts, Republicans smell blood and are stepping up efforts to punish the White House in the run up to the US mid-term 2014 elections. Lawmakers are investigating the political targeting of conservative groups by tax officials, the administration’s handling last year’s deadly attack in Benghazi and the federal seizure of journalists’ phone records. “Abuse of power inevitably has political repercussions,” Senator Ted Cruz told AFP after President Barack Obama launched damage limitation drive, sacking his tax chief and releasing a trove of emails on the Libyan incident. “This is not the way our government is supposed to work, and whenever power is concentrated and unchecked, it’s subject to abuse,” Cruz said. Democrats are mustering in defense of Obama — despite sharing misgivings about the incident at the Internal Revenue Service —and battling to prevent the scandals from derailing bipartisan legislation. Republicans hammered Obama and his team for what House Speaker John Boehner called “remarkable arrogance”

here is a ridiculous debate going on after the reports on spotfixing emerged: should IPL be scrapped? Even if IPL were the first sporting event to be tainted by spot-fixing, it would be senseless to even suggest that it be scrapped. Since that is not the case, talking of scrapping is, pardon the coarse expression, crap. Matchfixing is an age-old bane that ruins everything fine about sports. We hear of such instances more in cricket, because it is cricket and though it is wearisome to repeat a well-worn-out clichéd expression to drive the point home, let’s have it nonetheless: in India cricket is a religion and players here are gods (though the days when the second part held true are becoming a thing of the past). And where there’s big money involved, there’s bound to be rot.

READERS’ VIEWS

So let’s not speak of killing the goose that lays golden eggs. We are not certain about the true nature of the rot yet, since investigations are in the preliminary stages. We must also remember before lambasting IPL that it offered a platform for several youngsters who grew up dreaming, sweating and struggling, bowling batting and ﬁelding on paddy ﬁelds and gullies under the hot sun to become cricketers to live their dream and make a living, too. Parents who once cuffed their wards on the heads for their obsession for the bat and ball now drop them off for training, eagerly monitoring their progress. Such transition in attitude comes only if there are opportunities. And IPL does exactly that: offer the boy who was called a dreamer once to make his hopes come true.

But there are other types of dementia, which may be progressive in nature, and the patient does not respond to treatment or get completely cured. Medications can be given to slow down the rate of deterioration of memory and cognitive skills. It also helps to engage patients in some kind of activity and give them some simple tasks to do.

MYTH: Dementia is a natural process of ageing; everybody gets it. FACT IS: Dementia is not something you necessarily will get as you grow old. Some people have a family history of dementia. But only a small percentage of those with a family history of the disease develop it as they grow old. Apart from that, some of the risks factors of dementia, as listed out by Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, are alcohol use, atherosclerosis, blood pressure, cholesterol, depression, diabetes, obesity and smoking. These can affect any individual.

MYTH: Patients with dementia like being left alone. FACT IS: Doctors say patients with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia like being around a group of people and sitting through discussions even if they are not taking part in it, rather than leaving them alone all the time. This gives their brain some stimulation and keeps them engaged. According to caregiverstress.com, cognitive stimulation activities like solving word games, puzzles, listening to music and practical activities like gardening show improvement in quality of life and patients are able to communicate better than before.

SAN FRANCISCO: Google Glass was a common sight Wednesday as software savants here shared visions of games, weather reports, news and more delivered to the Internetlinked eyewear. Many of the 6,000 developers attending an annual Google I/O event in San Francisco sported Glass as part of an “explorer” program to tinker with creative applications for the eyewear, which cost $1,500 a unit. Uses ranged from practical tasks such as shopping or delivering local weather reports to sharing real time video streams of riding cable cars or playing augmented reality games in which the world is the board. “I’ve been wearing them most days since I got them three weeks ago,” said Jacob Hilker, a Massachusetts college student who works at online financial transactions titan PayPal. “Glass has been useful,” he continued.

“Not so much when you are sitting at a desk, but when you are doing things like commuting to work; walking around the city on the weekend, or going out drinking you easily get text, emails, navigation... all that stuff.” And, he pointed out, one can tend to Internet searches, messages and more without ever having to put down a drink. Like others wearing Glass, Hilker said that he takes a lot more photos. Glass lets wearers take pictures, record video or perform other tasks with touch controls or by speaking “Okay Glass” followed by a command. “Just walking down the street, I take a picture and share it in about five seconds,” Hilker said. Weather Channel product manager Robyn Weeks, who lives in Georgia, has had Glass for a week and so far has used it mostly for emails, pictures and videos. It is obvious when someone wearing Glass is taking a picture, she noted, since the small screen from which the gadget got its name shines in what could be viewed as an “on-air” sign when the camera is in action. Limited battery life in Glass, which is still in an early development phase, means that power would run out after about 30 minutes of continuous video. Glass connects to the Internet using Wi-Fi hot spots or, more typically, by being wirelessly tethered to mobile phones. Pictures or video are shared through the Google Plus social network. Glass wearers said the eyewear attracts attention from passersby. “People from outside of San Francisco and this area definitely look at you funny,” Weeks said. “Instead of looking in your eyes while talking they look up at the corner where the screen is.” Glass comes with attachable tinted lenses that give the devices the look of sunglasses, making gadgetry built into frames less noticeable. Developers in the Explorer program dismissed talk of banning wearing Glass while driving or at bars. “It’s ridiculous,” Hilker said. “In no-picture establishments I can see it, but if places allow camera phones why ban this?” he asked rhetorically, pointing to his Glass. Google co-founder and chief Larry Page depicted Glass as part of an ongoing effort to get computers “out of the way” so people can focus on lives enriched by what the Internet has to offer. “We want to make sure we are building experiences that make people really happy,” Page said while speaking about Glass during a keynote presentation. “We are relying on you to make happy users,” he told developers. “Ultimately, I think a lot of your experiences will move to Glass.” Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt said recently that it will take “a while” before consumer versions of Glass are available. Samsung has backed down on the Galaxy S4's limited storage after the phone appeared on the BBC's Watchdog, saying it will try to squeeze its myriad features into a smaller space, freeing up more memory for apps. The Beeb's consumer affairs show investigated the Android powerhouse's claims of 16GB of storage, after users complained the phone has only half of that available. "We appreciate this issue being raised and we will improve our communications," a Samsung spokesperson told CNET UK. "Also, we are reviewing the possibility to secure more memory space through further software optimisation.

WHITE NEXUS OUT SOON

Rumors suggested that a white Nexus 4 might appear at Google IO, and they were right. According to AndroidAndMe.com the white Nexus 4 is a carbon copy of the previous Nexus 4, just with a different colour casing. That might not be the most exciting news, the white Nexus 4 would hit the Google Play store on June 10 and it would be accompanied with Android 4.3. Most of us expected Google to announce Android 4.3 at the keynote, but it sounds like the next version of Android was intentionally bumped from the show.

ADDITIONS TO GLASS Google announced a number of new partner apps today on stage at Google I/O during the “Developing for Glass” session. Facebook and Twitter were the highlights of the list, which also included Evernote, Tumblr, Elle and CNN, in addition to the previously announced NYT and Path apps. Google is currently working on a native development environment for those looking to work with the device. The Glass Development Kit is in process now and there’s no current ETA for its arrival. The kit will allow for many things that are not currently possible using the already existing Glass Mirror API.

ot many actresses get the sort of platform which newcomer Anaika has managed to get in her debut film. She’s the latest actress to be discovered by RGV and her upcoming film Satya 2 is going to release in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil. “Of course, it’s a big deal for me. I never thought I would be an actress and getting a chance to act in an RGV’s film feels like a dream. I am a big fan of his work and when I realised that he wanted to cast me in Satya 2, I didn’t know what to say. The original film is a cult classic and Urmila Matondkar is one of my favourite actresses,” Anaika beams as she gets talking about Satya 2. Born and brought up in Lucknow, her father is a businessman who has dabbled in diamond trading and later in construction business for several years. The family is settled in Mumbai. “I studied in Panchgani for several years and later went to Malaysia to pursue a diploma in Mass Communication. After I moved back to Mumbai to do my graduation in Mass Communication, a chance meeting with RGV changed my life. My parents and I were reluctant about making a jump into films, but RGV convinced us all. I believe it’s the best decision I

have taken in my life,” she recalls. So, how was the experience of working with RGV, that too in a crime drama like Satya 2? “I play a bubbly village girl in the film who is madly in love with the hero. It was a great learning experience just to see Sharwanand act in the Telugu and Tamil versions. I had no idea about acting and RGV insisted that I be myself while shooting the film. Luckily, I never took more than two retakes. The best thing about him is that he never loses his cool. I must say that he treated me like a princess,” she chuckles. Anaika reveals that she has already got few more offers in Telugu and Tamil. “I used to watch plenty of Tamil films when I was studying in Malaysia. More than Hindi, I feel Telugu and Tamil films are a lot more entertaining and have plenty of action. I want to act in more South Indian films,” she says.

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Test player Shanthakumaran Sreesanth and fellow bowlers Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila were all arrested Thursday, Indian police said, with 11 bookmakers also detained in con-
