CM hits rivals for a six

Riding roughshod over the Opposition, Kiran justifies Bangaru Talli, his new scheme for girl child ,with Census data that shows a sharp fall in sex ratio. INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com

CITY

In Census-2001, the girl child sex ratio stood at 962 for 1,000 male children. That the State ought to give a big hand to the poor families having girl children is the verdict of the political pundits. The scheme was announced by the CM during a public meeting in Medak district recently. There was a huge cry of protest from his detractors, who took up the matter with the party high command in Delhi. At the forefront were ministers Dr DL Ravindra Reddy and K Jana Reddy. “Kiran was subjected to quizzing on this aspect and he was cornered; but the Census finding gave him a handle that his rivals find difficult to deal

HYDERABAD: Census data has come to his aid. CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy has been under heavy artillery fire from his Cabinet colleagues. Those who accused him of dictatorial behaviour for announcing schemes without consulting the Cabinet are now running for cover. The CM took out the Census report, 2011, that says girls’ population has recorded a heavy fall in AP. All of a sudden, the Bangaru Talli scheme, aimed at helping the girl child, is agreed upon to be a necessary measure. The Opposition has fallen silent. According to Census-2011, the sex ratio of females stands at 943 for 1,000 males. There is a decrease of 19 female children per thousand in the latest report. AROUND THE

MUMBAI: Maharashtra today became the second state after Tamil Nadu to replace traditional names of leucoderma to clear misconceptions about the cutaneous condition. “The illness has nothing to do with leprosy but is just a physiological condition,” health officials said. with,” said a Kiran supporter. According to an official release from CM’s office, he stressed on the need to implement the scheme by citing the decreasing sex ratio. Without losing time, the CM asked officials to come up with a draft for the next Cabinet meeting in order to implement the scheme at the earliest. A close aide and senior Congress leader said that the wise strategy devised by the CM would shut the mouths of his bitter critics. “ The scheme was announced to extend the fruits of development to girl children of the State. But the sudden revolt put him on the back foot for a while. Thanks to the Census-2011 data, the CM can go ahead with his scheme with a genuine reason and shut the mouths of his detractors.”

s per the Bangaru Talli scheme, every girl child belonging to a poor family will begin to get cash benefits immediately after her birth. The State government will deposit `2,500 in the bank account of the girl’s mother immediately after her birth. From then on, till the girl attains the age of five, `1,500 would be given every year to the girl for her expenses in Anganwadi centres. A sum of `1,000 will be given to the girl child immediately on her admission to primary school and she will be entitled to get `2,000

every year for her studies from Classes I to V. She will be paid `2,500 each year from Classes VI to VIII, and `3,000 each for Classes IX and X. Once she enrols at an intermediate level course, the girl will be paid `3,500 per year and `4,000 for each of the three years of graduation. The State also has a provision if the girl stops her education after intermediate: She will be paid `50,000 towards marriage expenses and `1 lakh if she opts for marriage after graduation. The total cost the State would incur on each girl child would be `2.1 lakh.

Officials said those suffering from the illness are ill-treated because of misconceptions and girls face problems in marriage. referred to as ‘shwet twacha’ or leucoderma,” according to officials. Acknowledging the stigma that is typically associated with the condition in society, they said there are a lot of misconceptions about the illness and those suffering from it are ill-treated and girls face problems in marriage. “The illness is not contagious and does not result in death or handicap. There are no complications even if it is not treated,” they added. PTI

IPL season 6 records 52% growth viewership

An ex-serviceman, G Venkateshwar Rao, 62, a resident of Saidabad, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison on Wednesday night at Gurramguda village of Vanasthalipuram. He was apparently facing financial hardships after his daughter’s marriage. Before he took his life, he had called his son-in-law to say he was bidding goodbye to life.

Nearly 10 tolas gold, one diamond ring and some cash were stolen from the house of Susheela Devi, a resident of Mettugada in Secunderabad. Devi and her family were away when their house was burgled on May 16. Thieves broke open the window and entered the house. Chikalguda police are investigating the case.

The government has accorded sanctions for three projects — building a 3.21 km retaining wall in Serilingampally, remodelling of Shaikpet nallah and widening of existing bridge across Hussain Sagar surplus nallah at Arvind Nagar to ease traffic bottlenecks — proposed by the GHMC. The total cost of the sanctions has come up to `26.03 crore.

The commissioner of civil supplies has directed the joint collectors to open required number of special counters for sale of superfine varieties of rice at `30 per kilo. Rice millers have sold 71,524 quintals of superfine varieties through 1,260 special counters. The shortage of special counters at Rythu Bazaars has made way for this requirement.

As per the viewership numbers recorded at 38 matches, IPL online, across both boxtv.com and youtube.com/indiatimes recorded a 52 per cent growth in viewership (75.2 million this year vs 49.3 million last year). In India, Bangalore and Hyderabad lead the viewership with 14 per cent each. No other live event has got this response in India.

May 31: CBI takes over case. June: Krishna, Rajesh's compounder, arrested by the CBI. Ten days later, Raj Kumar, the servant of a doctor friend of the Talwars, and Vijay Mandal, the domestic help of Talwars' neighbour, also nabbed. July: Rajesh set free by court after CBI fails to present evidence against him. December 2010: The CBI files closure report, stating Rajesh is the main suspect but there is not enough evidence against him.

NEW DELHI: Who killed Aarushi Talwar and Hemraj? Five years after the 14-year-old was found with her throat slit in her Noida home along with the family's domestic help, there is still no answer to who committed the murders most foul. Dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar are being tried for the murder of their daughter and domestic help in a court in Ghaziabad, not far from their home in Noida. Subjected to relentless media glare in a case that has caught the imagination of the nation and refuses to leave the headlines, the Talwars maintain they are innocent. And the CBI, which in December 2010 had filed a closure report saying that Rajesh was the main suspect but there was no evidence against him, is arguing

that the parents are responsible. It was on the morning of May 16, 2008 that Aarushi, a student of Delhi Public School, was found dead at her Jalvayu Vihar apartment in Noida. Hemraj, initially the prime suspect, was found killed on the terrace a day later.

Police first said Hemraj murdered Aarushi. When Hemraj's body was found, they said Rajesh was the main accused. In a televised press conference, a Noida police officer triggered outrage when he said Rajesh had killed them both after finding them in a compromising position. In the five years since, the proceedings have confounded even a Bollywood pot-boiler with charges, counter-charges and an entire society divided on the question of who is guilty. In the latest move, the Talwars have sought the summoning of 14 witnesses in the case, including former CBI official Arun Kumar. However, Supreme Court declined it.

February 2011: A special Ghaziabad court orders that Rajesh and Nupur Talwar be tried for Aarushi's murder. May: Rajesh and Nupur charged by Ghaziabad court with murder, destruction of evidence and conspiracy. April 2013: CBI officer tells court that Aarushi, Hemraj were killed by the Talwars. CBI also tells court that victims were found in objectionable position. May 3: Defence counsel pleads before a special court to summon 14 people, including former CBI joint director Arun Kumar as witnesses. However, the trail court and Supreme Court refused the petition a week later.

‘Planet hunter’ Kepler breaks down ‘Not ready to call the mission over,’ officials say; scientists will try to fix the problem. WASHINGTON: NASA’s planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft appears to be hobbled by a faulty wheel and may be near the end of its four-year mission, space agency scientists said Wednesday. Kepler, a $600 million mission, was launched in 2009 on a search for other planets. So far, it has found 2,700 candidates, including a handful that may be habitable worlds, not too hot and

not too cold. The problem is a reaction wheel that keeps the spacecraft pointed but has stopped working, said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA. “We are not ready to call the mission over,” said Grunsfeld, adding that scientists are still going to try and figure out how to get the wheel restarted.

AROUND THE

WORLD

The problem was discovered on Tuesday, when the spacecraft went into a pre-programmed safe mode that kicks in “if the observatory has trouble knowing where it should point,” said Grunsfeld.

Scientists have been expecting that such a problem may arise, since the wheels have a limited lifespan and a different reaction wheel broke down in July. NASA has not turned that wheel, reaction wheel 2, back on since, and the spacecraft needs a minimum of three wheels to function in the way it was intended. It will take experts a few weeks to decide the next steps. AGENCIES

Music gets fresher, better Crew members of local production house 100!creations talk about their motive to recognise and support talent to popularise music on a wide scale. ALRIC QUINTIN feedback@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Music is a part of everyone’s life. It is that one activity which is common in our daily lives. Postnoon speaks to the cast and crew of 100!creations, a home production that promises to deliver great music and receive any form of talent in order to popularise this kind of activity among a large section of people. “The first song O meri Jaan is the opening song of this music album. The song is of rock genre but its melody and lyrics portray it to be a ‘break-up’ song,” says MHA Farmaan, a lyricist, singer and composer. “It is not a heavy metal song, but more of soft or alternative rock, as we had to keep the theme of the song in mind,” says Stephan Daniel. “We are specifically not a band but we are a team of producers who inculcate talent among the youth. We are here to recognise various talent and give people an opportunity to work towards it and showcase the same. says Daniel. Speaking about the first single of the singer, Stephen adds, “Farmaan wanted to work on his first song all by himself. He penned the lyrics and composed the song on his own. This song, also sung by him, revolves around the theme of a ‘break-up’, wherein the male protagonist is seen going through a tough time after his break-up.” “We accept any amount of talent and are ready to promote it through our production house. We are glad to have M Gouri

Shankar, who is a concept director and has worked in several short movies, as a part of our team. He is currently working on this project to make a mark of his own. We also have Natasha Pamnani, who was the first runner-up of Miss Hyderabad 2012. She has also acted in short roles in movies. Our team exhibits a lot of talent, and for that we have plans of organising a live performance, most probably in the first week of June. We are a team which is always open to challenges, and (we want to) create a huge scope for the young aspirers. More subways planned

Quoting the failure of Koti subway, citizens’ group Right2Walk says ‘At Grade’ or ‘Pelican’ crossings are best suited for Hyderabad. N SHIVA KUMAR

Md NIZAMUDDIN nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Similar to Mumbai’s subway system, the GHMC has made big plans to construct subways at four busy pedestrian crossings which will have shops underground. But pedestrian rights groups are averse to the idea, citing various factors including women’s safety. It is after a gap of three decades that the GHMC will be trying to make subways. It has identified Afzal Gunj, Abids (Grammar School), Owaisi Hospital and Mehdipatnam as spots where there has been pedestrian problems for years. According to civic officials, the estimated cost for these subways would be `3.94 crore. “We have sent the project for administrative sanction to the government and detailed project report will be prepared after the GHMC gets the nod,” says superintending engineer R Sreedhar.

the works sold went for more than $10 million and 23 for more than $5 million. It was “the highest total in auction history,” Brett Gorvy, head of post-war and Contemporary art, said. “The remarkable bidding and record prices set reflect a new era in the art market, wherein seasoned collectors and new bidders compete at the highest level within a global market,” Gorvy said. Leading the frenzied charge were the Pollock and a work by one-time graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, which set another record at $48.8 million. The exuberant sale came a day after rival Sotheby’s sold Barnett Newman’s “Onement VI” for $43.84 million and a Gerhard Richter photo-style painting called “Domplatz, Mailand” for $37.1 million — the highest for any living artist. Christie’s Manhattan sale also saw Basquiat’s “Dustheads” sail past its $25 million to $35 million pre-sale estimate to the highest auction price ever for the artist, who died in 1988 of a heroin overdose in New York, aged just 27. 1.5 bn-year-old water found in Canada mine Scientists hope further study on the water may help understand how life evolved on early Earth. LONDON: Water drilled from rock in a North American mine is at least 1.5 billion years old, the Novel dating techniques used by the Canadian and UK team found. This is among the oldest yet found on Earth, say scientists. The water was probably once on the surface and then percolated through the ground where it became trapped at a depth of 2.4km. Liyaqat granted bail While Central investigative agencies say he sneaked in to conduct terror attacks in Delhi, the J&K cops say he was on his way to surrender. NEW DELHI: Suspected Hizbul militant Liyaqat Shah, arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly conspiring to carry out terror attacks in the national capital, was today granted bail by a special NIA court here. District Judge I S Mehta enlarged Liyaqat on bail on a personal bond of `20,000 with a surety of the like amount. REPORTERS’ DIARY

They trade in human misery HYDERABAD: Dowry cases are increasingly proving a goldmine for the police, though not all police corps could be blamed for it. Arrest of a woman cop for trying to gain from a dowry case is still fresh in the memory while another, not known outside police circles, has come to light. One Malleswar (name changed) was charged for dowry harassment by Jhansibazaar police. It is said that his mother came to meet the police inspector regarding the case. As she was waiting for the inspector, a girl who was identified as engaged to mediate on the matters with families came and told the woman that the inspector was very angry at her son and he would be arrested and beaten up. To prevent this, she suggested she pay `7,000 to the inspector. And having said her piece, she left the scene. When the inspector came, the mother cried and said she did not have `7,000 to pay. Surprised, the inspector asked her who demanded the money and the story came out. A search was conducted for the mediator and she was caught. It came out that her brother suggested the move. After rendering an apology, she was let go. MS

GENE PATENT

Jolie story lays bare legal tangles

US Supreme Court is expected to rule in June on whether Myriad Genetics can hold patents on BRCA1, BRCA2 genes. KERRY SHERIDAN feedback@postnoon.com WASHINGTON: Angelina Jolie tested positive for a “faulty gene” at the center of a high-profile legal battle in the US that challenges whether human genes can belong to a corporation. Experts say it is unlikely that Jolie’s story of how she decided to have a preventive double mastectomy will sway the Supreme Court, which is expected to rule in June on whether Myriad Genetics can hold patents on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. But lawyers for the plaintiffs applauded the 37-year-old actress for mentioning that the cost of the

tests is out of reach for many. “Her highlighting of the barriers to testing, particularly cost, is one of the issues that is at the heart of our case,” said Sandra Park, one of the lead attorneys on the case from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). ACLU is representing patients who challenge Myriad’s right to patent the genes in question, saying the process has stalled research and made the test too expensive. The patents allow the company to be the sole provider of a test for the rare mutations that may lead to cancer. Jolie and about 0.2 per cent of women on the planet carry a harmful BRCA genetic mutation that raises their lifetime risk of breast or ovarian cancer to as high as 80 per cent. “The central legal question is: Did Myriad invent anything here? And in our perspective, they did not,” Park told AFP. “They did add to scientific knowledge because they identi-

fied the connection between these genes and breast cancer. But you don’t get a patent for just identifying something in nature.” The company says it invested $500 million in developing its test, called BRACAnalysis. “I think it is time for us to move past ownership of human DNA,” said Andrea Downing, 32, who found out at age 25 that she carried a BRCA mutation and had a preventive double mastectomy last year. “We need to open up research in a way that is collaborative and not competitive. That is the key to finding smarter ways to prevent cancer for women who carry this mutation.” AFP

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama has emphasised on maintaining a balance between national security and media freedom, as his administration is in the middle of a controversy related to intrusion into the phone call records of reporters and editors of the Associated Press by the Justice Department. Obama, however, refused to directly comment on the issue of Associated Press as the case is under investigation. “I can talk broadly about the balance that we have to strike. Leaks related to national security can put people at risk. They can put men and women in uniform that I’ve sent into the battlefield at risk. “They can put some of our intelligence officers, who are in various, dangerous situations that are easily compromised, at risk,” Obama said in response to a question at a joint news conference with the visiting Turkish Prime Minister yesterday. WASHINGTON: Barack Obama has ruled out any unilateral American action against Assad regime, asserting that his administration would continue to work with international partners and the Syrian opposition. “It’s not going to be something that the United States does by itself,” he said during a meeting with Turkish PM Erdogan.

WASHINGTON: Terming incidents of sexual assault inside the military as not only a crime, but also shameful and disgraceful, US President Barack Obama has said that such events would weaken the army. The issue of sexual assault in armed forces undermines trust between its personnel, Obama said following his meeting with US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey and top military leadership following reports of sexual assault in armed forces. He exuded confidence that the Pentagon leadership would take steps to address this problem. The Department of Defence estimates that while 26,000 sexual assaults occurred in 2012, only 3,374 were reported. PTI

Now, the film has been invited to a lot more film festivals. First among the lot where Eega is going to make a pitstop is the film market at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival in France. Later, Eega will also be screened at Shanghai International Film Festival, Madrid International Film Festival and Puchon International Film Festival in South Korea. In fact, Rajamouli has stated that the film might be screened in more film festivals in the next few months. He feels a sharp jab in his arm all of a sudden, and cold water splashes across his face! A metallic arm is shaking him wildly saying “Sorry, sorry!” With a jolt, he sits up straight. He is at the coffee house. The waiter is handing him paper napkins and apologising repeatedly. Gautham looks at him, slowly trying to realise what had just happened, when Rashmi turns the corner holding her coffee and chatting with a handsome young man who opens the door for her. As she steps out, she turns to free the stuck dupatta on the handle, and their eyes meet. HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTS Finally the apex court has come with some relief to netizens. The ‘offended’ parties, persons and governments tormenting critics using IT Act will have to think twice before acting now. Good that there is at least one element of the state that cares about freedom of expression.

Anger over East German ‘human guinea pigs’

G

ermany is confronting another chapter from its past — allegations that Western drug companies used more than 50,000 people in the former communist East as “human guinea pigs” in 1980s medical trials. News magazine Spiegel this week reported that a who’s who of big German, Swiss and US pharmaceutical companies made deals with the dictatorship to test medicines, sometimes without the knowledge of the patients. Several people were known to have died during trials, and some tests involved infants and delirious alcoholics, said the report on the agreements with the police state that collapsed with the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall. Major drugs companies, some of which have taken over other firms in corporate mergers since, insist they stuck to the standards and laws of the times. But calls have grown for full transparency into the agreements overseen by the State Security (Stasi) secret police to earn the communist state tens of millions in hard-currency Deutschmarks. “It was a nasty German-German deal” in which profits were made on both sides of the Berlin Wall, Stasi Archives Commissioner Roland Jahn, who was a dissident-journalist in the former German Democratic Republic, told the Zeit weekly on Thursday. “I am not surprised that medical tests were carried out in the GDR that didn’t meet the standards of democratic countries. The dictatorship was capable of a lot.” AFP

W

ith the Obama administration fighting scandal on three fronts, Republicans smell blood and are stepping up efforts to punish the White House in the run up to the US mid-term 2014 elections. Lawmakers are investigating the political targeting of conservative groups by tax officials, the administration’s handling last year’s deadly attack in Benghazi and the federal seizure of journalists’ phone records. “Abuse of power inevitably has political repercussions,” Senator Ted Cruz told AFP after President Barack Obama launched damage limitation drive, sacking his tax chief and releasing a trove of emails on the Libyan incident. “This is not the way our government is supposed to work, and whenever power is concentrated and unchecked, it’s subject to abuse,” Cruz said. Democrats are mustering in defense of Obama — despite sharing misgivings about the incident at the Internal Revenue Service —and battling to prevent the scandals from derailing bipartisan legislation. Republicans hammered Obama and his team for what House Speaker John Boehner called “remarkable arrogance”

— and he and others demanded that any officials found to have broken the law be sent to jail. “Someone needs to be imprisoned, someone needs to be prosecuted,” said Republican Senator Rand Paul, echoing Boehner’s call to jail those responsible for the IRS screening of conservative groups. With the crises only serving to deepen Republican suspicion of Obama, his ambitious second-term agenda of immigration, gun control, tax reform and a debt reduction deal suddenly seems a much steeper climb. “There has been certainly a loss of trust, and it’s going to make it more difficult for us to move forward on some very important issues that I think we ought to be talking about,” House Republican Randy Hultgren said. Steve King, a Tea Party conservative, was more direct in assessing the prospects for Obama’s legislative agenda. “At this point it’s questionable as to whether he has one,” King said. “He’s got three things going on: Benghazi, the AP piece, and the IRS.” On Wednesday, House members grilled Attorney General Eric Holder for more than four hours, and several more House hearings, including a Friday panel featuring the dismissed IRS acting chief Steven Miller, are planned. But Boehner must juggle his

caucus’s fury with his own pledge to focus on top Republican priorities. “We’re trying to do everything we can to create jobs and we’re going to continue to do that,” he stressed. But he still displayed anger about how the White House has operated. “Nothing dissolves the bond between the people and their government like the arrogance of power here in Washington,” he said. Senate Democrat Mark Warner cautioned against Republicans sinking their teeth so deeply into the ongoing drama that it jeopardizes key legislation. “It would be a huge mistake if people would try to use any of these other areas as a way to distract us from the really critical issues around immigration reform, debt and deficit, and other things we face,” he said. And Republican Senator Lindsey Graham promised that

work would continue. “It won’t affect my willingness to work on immigration or the budget deal at all,” he told AFP. “You disagree with people on A and you work with them on B.” Tim Miller, who heads the political action committee America Rising, said the IRS crisis “has legs” because it serves to highlight a big and unwieldy government. “This is going to be a major rallying cry and motivator for conservatives and Republicans... to turn out in the midterm elections to try to clean up our government,” he said. But not everyone — not even congressman Louie Gohmert, a fierce Obama critic — is sure how the scandals will play out 18 months from now, when Republicans hope to finally reclaim the Senate. “The American people’s memory is very short term, so I don’t know,” he said.

T

here is a ridiculous debate going on after the reports on spotfixing emerged: should IPL be scrapped? Even if IPL were the first sporting event to be tainted by spot-fixing, it would be senseless to even suggest that it be scrapped. Since that is not the case, talking of scrapping is, pardon the coarse expression, crap. Matchfixing is an age-old bane that ruins everything fine about sports. We hear of such instances more in cricket, because it is cricket and though it is wearisome to repeat a well-worn-out clichéd expression to drive the point home, let’s have it nonetheless: in India cricket is a religion and players here are gods (though the days when the second part held true are becoming a thing of the past). And where there’s big money involved, there’s bound to be rot.

READERS’ VIEWS

So let’s not speak of killing the goose that lays golden eggs. We are not certain about the true nature of the rot yet, since investigations are in the preliminary stages. We must also remember before lambasting IPL that it offered a platform for several youngsters who grew up dreaming, sweating and struggling, bowling batting and fielding on paddy fields and gullies under the hot sun to become cricketers to live their dream and make a living, too. Parents who once cuffed their wards on the heads for their obsession for the bat and ball now drop them off for training, eagerly monitoring their progress. Such transition in attitude comes only if there are opportunities. And IPL does exactly that: offer the boy who was called a dreamer once to make his hopes come true.

There is also segregated collection of biodegrable and nonbiodegradable garbage. “In terms of real estate, it was dull for few years like any other place in the City. HYDERABAD: Designing and developing infrastructure for the commercial and retail real estate business should be driven by the demand. A developer is able to materialise the project based on the requirements of the tenants. This will enable the developer to obtain the real commercial rent from the property. Aspects of the property (multiplex, mall, hypermarket and super market) and various technical requirements (mall size, ceiling height and pathway) need to be kept in mind before developing the property. Approaching a consultant and seeking his expertise is must for the developers to develop a property with quality. However, consultant is not just confined to provide expertise. He is supposed to act as a bridge between the tenant and developers. For instance, he informs tenants about the favourable conditions of each of the locality and drives them to open their shop

or outlet there. Similarly, every tenant has certain type of requirements, which should be fulfilled by the developer. The real challenge for any of the consultant is to educate the developer and help him in creating the relevant infrastructure as per the needs of the tenant. The development of the property should also be workable and should get decent return on investment (ROI) to the developer. Many times, developers are unaware whom they are developing the property. They develop it just like any other property that they had earlier without considering the locality and

requirements of the tenants. The property will be proved as futile if the technical requirements were not considered before its inception. Although, the location is good, a bad development will not attract tenants. For instance, many tenants seek good ceiling height. If the height of the room is low, the temperature levels will be more. This requires additional electricity to decrease the temperature. A good parking space is the real need to attract customers for these retail shops. If the property has a decent frontage, it brings visibility to the tenant. This will save advertisement costs and people who travel in this area get to know about that retail shop. Unfortunately, some of the commercial developers are not fol-

lowing these minor points. As a result, tenants are not showing interest to hire these properties. The developer can save huge costs if he customises the property according to the needs of the tenant. For instance, some tenants require 250 KVA power connection. It is not just the transformer; the whole wiring and design need to be based on that. If developer wants to renovate or try to provide these facilities in future, he has to lose valuable time and money. The writer is the director (Retail) for Yards and Feet Property consultants

MYTHS

Knowing dementia for what it is and what it is not is key to detecting symptoms and treating them early.

MYTH: Once you are diagnosed with dementia, you cannot be cured. FACT IS: It depends on the type of dementia. If it is caused due to a liver disease (known as Hepatic encephalopathy) or kidney damage, known as renal dementia, it can be treated and cured. But there are other types of dementia, which may be progressive in nature, and the patient does not respond to treatment or get completely cured. Medications can be given to slow down the rate of deterioration of memory and cognitive skills. It also helps to engage patients in some kind of activity and give them some simple tasks to do.

MYTH: Dementia is a natural process of ageing; everybody gets it. FACT IS: Dementia is not something you necessarily will get as you grow old. Some people have a family history of dementia. But only a small percentage of those with a family history of the disease develop it as they grow old. Apart from that, some of the risks factors of dementia, as listed out by Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, are alcohol use, atherosclerosis, blood pressure, cholesterol, depression, diabetes, obesity and smoking. These can affect any individual.

MYTH: Patients with dementia like being left alone. FACT IS: Doctors say patients with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia like being around a group of people and sitting through discussions even if they are not taking part in it, rather than leaving them alone all the time. This gives their brain some stimulation and keeps them engaged. According to caregiverstress.com, cognitive stimulation activities like solving word games, puzzles, listening to music and practical activities like gardening show improvement in quality of life and patients are able to communicate better than before.

Do you know your brain?

4 MYTH: Patients with Alzheimer’s are very aggressive. FACT IS: It is frightening when you lose your memory and can’t seem to remember where you are or what was told to you a few minutes back. But all dementia patients are not violent. According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, Alzheimer’s affects different people in different ways. The site also advises that violent behaviour can be prevented if we change the way we communicate with or approach the patient. The most important thing while dealing with a dementia patient is to have patience — help them and support them in their condition.

POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com

MYTH: Alzheimer’s is only about loss of memory; it doesn’t result in death. FACT IS: Alzheimer’s is a progressive, degenerative disease of the brain. It is a disease where the patient’s condition worsens as the disease progress, eventually resulting in death. According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, the brain cells of the patient are slowly destroyed and they reach a stage where the body does not perform normal functions like eating, walking and moving. There is no cure for the disease and the patient’s condition deteriorates over a period of time despite all the medications that are given, though medicines can help better the quality of life.

Allergic rhinitis is inflammation of the inside of the nose caused by an allergen, such as pollen, dust, mould or certain animal danders. It often causes cold-like symptoms. These symptoms usually start soon after being exposed to an allergen. Some people only get it for a few months at a time because they are sensitive to seasonal allergens, such as tree or grass pollen. Other people get allergic rhinitis all year round. nhs.uk

‘GLASSY’ MOVE SOFTWARE MAKERS GETTING FACE TIME WITH GOOGLE GLASSES

An attendee wears Google Glass as he watches the opening keynote at the Google I/O developers conference.

GLENN CHAPMAN feedback@postnoon.com

SAN FRANCISCO: Google Glass was a common sight Wednesday as software savants here shared visions of games, weather reports, news and more delivered to the Internetlinked eyewear. Many of the 6,000 developers attending an annual Google I/O event in San Francisco sported Glass as part of an “explorer” program to tinker with creative applications for the eyewear, which cost $1,500 a unit. Uses ranged from practical tasks such as shopping or delivering local weather reports to sharing real time video streams of riding cable cars or playing augmented reality games in which the world is the board. “I’ve been wearing them most days since I got them three weeks ago,” said Jacob Hilker, a Massachusetts college student who works at online financial transactions titan PayPal. “Glass has been useful,” he continued.

“Not so much when you are sitting at a desk, but when you are doing things like commuting to work; walking around the city on the weekend, or going out drinking you easily get text, emails, navigation... all that stuff.” And, he pointed out, one can tend to Internet searches, messages and more without ever having to put down a drink. Like others wearing Glass, Hilker said that he takes a lot more photos. Glass lets wearers take pictures, record video or perform other tasks with touch controls or by speaking “Okay Glass” followed by a command. “Just walking down the street, I take a picture and share it in about five seconds,” Hilker said. Weather Channel product manager Robyn Weeks, who lives in Georgia, has had Glass for a week and so far has used it mostly for emails, pictures and videos. It is obvious when someone wearing Glass is taking a picture, she noted, since the small screen from which the gadget got its name shines in what could be viewed as an “on-air” sign when the camera is in action. Limited battery life in Glass, which is still in an early development phase, means that power would run out after about 30 minutes of continuous video. Glass connects to the Internet using Wi-Fi hot spots or, more typically, by being wirelessly tethered to mobile phones. Pictures or video are shared through the Google Plus social network. Glass wearers said the eyewear attracts attention from passersby. “People from outside of San Francisco and this area definitely look at you funny,” Weeks said. “Instead of looking in your eyes while talking they look up at the corner where the screen is.” Glass comes with attachable tinted lenses that give the devices the look of sunglasses, making gadgetry built into frames less noticeable. Developers in the Explorer program dismissed talk of banning wearing Glass while driving or at bars. “It’s ridiculous,” Hilker said. “In no-picture establishments I can see it, but if places allow camera phones why ban this?” he asked rhetorically, pointing to his Glass. Google co-founder and chief Larry Page depicted Glass as part of an ongoing effort to get computers “out of the way” so people can focus on lives enriched by what the Internet has to offer. “We want to make sure we are building experiences that make people really happy,” Page said while speaking about Glass during a keynote presentation. “We are relying on you to make happy users,” he told developers. “Ultimately, I think a lot of your experiences will move to Glass.” Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt said recently that it will take “a while” before consumer versions of Glass are available. AFP

20 SAMSUNG IS LISTENING! Samsung has backed down on the Galaxy S4's limited storage after the phone appeared on the BBC's Watchdog, saying it will try to squeeze its myriad features into a smaller space, freeing up more memory for apps. The Beeb's consumer affairs show investigated the Android powerhouse's claims of 16GB of storage, after users complained the phone has only half of that available. "We appreciate this issue being raised and we will improve our communications," a Samsung spokesperson told CNET UK. "Also, we are reviewing the possibility to secure more memory space through further software optimisation.

WHITE NEXUS OUT SOON

Rumors suggested that a white Nexus 4 might appear at Google IO, and they were right. According to AndroidAndMe.com the white Nexus 4 is a carbon copy of the previous Nexus 4, just with a different colour casing. That might not be the most exciting news, the white Nexus 4 would hit the Google Play store on June 10 and it would be accompanied with Android 4.3. Most of us expected Google to announce Android 4.3 at the keynote, but it sounds like the next version of Android was intentionally bumped from the show.

ADDITIONS TO GLASS Google announced a number of new partner apps today on stage at Google I/O during the “Developing for Glass” session. Facebook and Twitter were the highlights of the list, which also included Evernote, Tumblr, Elle and CNN, in addition to the previously announced NYT and Path apps. Google is currently working on a native development environment for those looking to work with the device. The Glass Development Kit is in process now and there’s no current ETA for its arrival. The kit will allow for many things that are not currently possible using the already existing Glass Mirror API.

ot many actresses get the sort of platform which newcomer Anaika has managed to get in her debut film. She’s the latest actress to be discovered by RGV and her upcoming film Satya 2 is going to release in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil. “Of course, it’s a big deal for me. I never thought I would be an actress and getting a chance to act in an RGV’s film feels like a dream. I am a big fan of his work and when I realised that he wanted to cast me in Satya 2, I didn’t know what to say. The original film is a cult classic and Urmila Matondkar is one of my favourite actresses,” Anaika beams as she gets talking about Satya 2. Born and brought up in Lucknow, her father is a businessman who has dabbled in diamond trading and later in construction business for several years. The family is settled in Mumbai. “I studied in Panchgani for several years and later went to Malaysia to pursue a diploma in Mass Communication. After I moved back to Mumbai to do my graduation in Mass Communication, a chance meeting with RGV changed my life. My parents and I were reluctant about making a jump into films, but RGV convinced us all. I believe it’s the best decision I

have taken in my life,” she recalls. So, how was the experience of working with RGV, that too in a crime drama like Satya 2? “I play a bubbly village girl in the film who is madly in love with the hero. It was a great learning experience just to see Sharwanand act in the Telugu and Tamil versions. I had no idea about acting and RGV insisted that I be myself while shooting the film. Luckily, I never took more than two retakes. The best thing about him is that he never loses his cool. I must say that he treated me like a princess,” she chuckles. Anaika reveals that she has already got few more offers in Telugu and Tamil. “I used to watch plenty of Tamil films when I was studying in Malaysia. More than Hindi, I feel Telugu and Tamil films are a lot more entertaining and have plenty of action. I want to act in more South Indian films,” she says.

Anaika Soti is the latest newbie to join the long list of actresses who were ‘discovered’ by RGV. She gets talking about her debut film Satya 2.

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

The win earns the Knicks at least one more game in the best-of-seven series as game six is scheduled for Saturday in Indianapolis. The Knicks haven’t beaten the Pacers in Indiana in four games this season, but Pacers coach Frank Vogel said his team would have to play better to close out New York. “We had a lot of problems,” Vogel said. “We didn’t play a good basketball game. SPOT FIXING

Aussie bowler Tait angry over claims SYDNEY: Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait has strongly denied any link to the arrest of three Indian teammates allegedly involved in spot-fixing during an Indian domestic T20 tournament. Test player Shanthakumaran Sreesanth and fellow bowlers Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila were all arrested Thursday, Indian police said, with 11 bookmakers also detained in con-

nection with the inquiry. The three cricketers play for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, as does former Test star Tait. Tait’s name was circulated in social media, on radio and a number of websites along with the three Indians, but he robustly denied any wrongdoing in a statement. “I’m bewildered, I’m angry and I’m upset at the false suggestions I’ve been

involved in any wrongdoing,” he said in the statement. “While I welcome the recent statements from police clearing me of any involvement, for a few hours I was deeply distressed by the rumours that were rapidly circulating about me, most of which were aired in the social media space. “Not only were they without foundation, they

highlight the danger of a medium that deals with innuendo rather than fact, the result of which has brought my name into question,” he added. “At no stage in my career have I engaged in spot or match fixing and I’m in discussions with my manager and legal representatives to examine how this episode unfolded and any further action I may take.”

Nadal survives Gulbis test Rafael Nadal endured a three-set thriller before overcoming bighitting Ernests Gulbis to reach the Rome Masters quarter-finals.

ROME: Defending champion Rafael Nadal endured a three-set thriller before overcoming big-hitting Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 on Thursday to reach the Rome Masters quarterfinals. Gulbis, ranked 46th, and a winner in Rome in 2010 over Roger Federer on his way to the semi-finals, saved two match points in the third set, but finally went down when he sent a forehand wide to the massive relief of a dancing, celebrating Nadal. The Spaniard now stands 6-0 against Gulbis as he bids for a seventh Rome title. He will next face compatriot David Ferrer, who advanced in a walkover against Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber, who was suffering from vertigo.

“On Friday, I have a chance against against a very difficult player. I survived a tough match today. Now I have another chance to try and go farther,” said Nadal.

BYRON NELSON CHAMPIONSHIP

Course-record 60 puts Bradley in front IRVING, TEXAS: Keegan Bradley fired 10 birdies and an eagle in a course-record 60 on Thursday to seize a three-shot lead after the first round of the US PGA Tour’s Byron Nelson Championship. Bradley’s sizzling 10-under par round came despite two bogeys on the TPC Four Seasons Resort course, where he took advantage of a rainsoftened course to set an early target that no one could match. South African Charl Schwartzel had seven birdies and no bogeys in his seven-under 63, which gave him sole possession of second place. “I birdied more holes than I didn’t, which is rare,” Bradley said. “It was just an explosive type of round.” The former PGA Championship winner said playing partners Jason Dufner and Matt Kuchar kept the round relaxed. “Just a really fun round,” Bradley said. “Kind of felt like a Saturday morning round with my buddies.” AFP

“Being in the quarter-finals is fantastic. I’m more than pleased with what I’ve done since I returned (from his seven months off with knee problems).” Nadal was fresh from his Madrid title at the weekend - his record 23rd Masters. He has won five titles from seven finals since returning to tennis after a seven-month injury absence. Top seed Novak Djokovic played without ankle pain in a routine 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Alexandr Dolgopolov. Djokovic dispatched Dolgopolov in an hour, with five aces and 13 winners in a contest which began 45 minutes late due to morning rain. The two-time Rome champion will next play Czech Tomas Berdych, a winner over South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 7-5, 6-2. AFP

Ji, Thompson share LPGA lead MOBILE, ALABAMA: South Korea’s Ji Eun-Hee fired a bogey-free seven-under 65 on Thursday to grab a share of the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic first-round lead alongside American Lexi Thompson. Thompson, trying to improve on her runner-up finish in the same tournament last year, had eight birdies and a bogey. They were one stroke in front of Jessica Korda, who had six birdies in her six-under 66. Nicole Castrale, Mina Harigae, Dewi Claire Schreefel, Thidapa Suwannapura Park Hee-Young, Jennifer Johnson and Chella Choi were tied on 67. Defending champion and world number two Stacy Lewis, looking for a solid showing to gain ground on absent world number one Park In-Bee, carded a two-under par 70 that gave her a share of 33rd place. Ji, the 2009 US Open champion, made five birdies on the front nine. “I felt really good with my putting today,” she said. “If I had five- or 10-foot putts, I felt like I could make it. So I was really focused on it and I was really positive with my putter.” AFP

Kiwis stifle England JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse LONDON: New Zealand took charge of the first Test at Lord’s on Thursday, reducing England to 160 for four when rain forced an early close to the opening day. England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and batted but his side rarely got out of first gear in the face of some accurate bowling by the tourists. Trent Boult was the pick of the attack, removing both Cook and Jonathan Trott after lunch on his way to an economical return of two wickets for 29 runs in 17 overs. Fellow left-arm seamer Neil Wagner then dismissed

Ian Bell for 31 in the final session. At stumps, the inexperienced Yorkshire duo of Joe Root (25 not out) and Jonny Bairstow (three not out) were at the crease. England’s plight would have been worse had not Trott, who made a painstaking 39, been dropped by Bruce Martin off his own bowling when on nought. New Zealand bowled 30 maidens in 80 overs on Thursday -- a testament to their accuracy and the inability of an England toporder missing the injured Kevin Pietersen to hit them out of their stride. “They didn’t really look to dominate us in a way,” Boult told reporters after

stumps. “They are good batsmen and I expect them to respect good balls. “I guess we made them respect a lot more good balls than they should have,” Boult, one of eight New Zealand players appearing in their first Test at Lord’s, added. Although blue skies overhead on a sunny day promised ideal conditions for batting, an outfield relaid after the Olympic archery tournament at Lord’s last year prevented several well-struck shots getting to the boundary. “It was tough, it was not what you expect the first day at Lord’s,” Trott said. Dubai: The ICC today said it will provide “full support” to the BCCI and Delhi police in the investigation into the arrest of three cricketers, including S Sreesanth, for their alleged role in spot-fixing in the ongoing Indian Premier League. “The ICC will provide full support to the BCCI and Delhi Police in this investigation. The BCCI’s decision to suspend its three cricketers on corruption charges is a clear indicator of the ICC and its Members’ zerotolerance approach,” ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said. Errant Indian pacer Sreesanth and two other bowlers from Rajasthan Royals team were arrested in a postmidnight operation in Mumbai on Thursday by Delhi Police for spot-fixing IPL matches for payments of upto Rs 60 lakhs just for giving away pre-determined number of runs in an over. Richardson said the ICC has undertaken measures to impose strong penalties on those found to be guilty. “The ICC and its Members

have collectively taken measures to tighten vigilance, strengthen our anti-corruption codes and increase player education programmes as well as offering strict penalties to those found guilty of illegal conduct. “As such, it is disappointing to see that despite the extensive education programmes delivered by the ICC and the BCCI, there still

appears to be some players who remain vulnerable to temptations. “We have always maintained that the real battle is against the unscrupulous individuals who are preying on the susceptible players.” A special cell of the Delhi police arrested Sreesanth and his teammates — Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan — for

indulging in spot-fixing in at least three IPL matches as per arrangements with bookies who have underworld connections abroad. Y P Singh, Head of ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU), said: “Over the last 12 months or so, we have seen far more examples of players doing the right thing and reporting approaches.”

APARNA G SAI aparna.s@postnoon.com Sunrisers Hyderabad are set to clash with Rajasthan Royals in a crucial encounter today at the former’s home turf. The hosts would need this victory to strengthen their chances of making it the playoffs. Also, a win today would not only eliminate the chances of Kings XI Punjab making it to the next stage, but would also make it tough for the Royal Challengers Bangalore to proceed. SRH have two matches; the first today against RR and the second on Sunday against the Kolkata Knight Riders. If Hyderabad emerge victorious in both these matches,

they will qualify for the playoffs without any hurdle. Meanwhile, the visitors, who have already made it to the playoffs, are not a happy bunch at the moment. The Rajasthan side have been shaken after the arrest of three of their players including S Sreesanth, for spot fixing. Skipper Dravid, who along with the coach, read out a statement about the incident at a press conference on Thursday evening, expressed his disappointment and shock over the incident and looked extremely upset. The Royals also refused to practice in the presence of the media on Thursday, as they wanted to have a private session.

The former England captain, 38, made the announcement shortly after winning the Ligue 1 title with French giants Paris Saint-Germain, which made him the first Englishman to win league championships in four different countries. He bows out from the game at the same time as his former Manchester United mentor Alex Ferguson, who handed Beckham his professional debut in 1992 and thereby launched one of the most newsworthy careers in the history of the English game. Beckham went on to play for Real Madrid, Los Angeles Galaxy and AC Milan, as well as PSG, and won 115 caps for England in an unprecedented feat for an outfield player. "I'm thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level," Beckham said. "If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club, Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over one hundred times, and

lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy. "I'm fortunate to have realised those dreams." Blessed with an extraordinarily accurate right foot, Beckham was renowned for his dead-ball prowess and his seemingly limitless reserves of stamina. He won six league titles, two FA Cups and the 1999 Champions League with United, creating both injurytime goals as Ferguson's side stormed back to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the final, before joining Madrid in 2003, where he won the Spanish league title four years later. Beckham moved to LA in 2007 and won two MLS Cup titles with the Galaxy, but he spent two loan spells at Milan and then returned to Europe in January this year, when he signed a short-term deal with PSG. He is fondly remembered for his exploits in an

England shirt, having captained his country for six years and played at three World Cups. "I knew every time I wore the Three Lions shirt, I was not only following in a long line of great players, I was also representing every fan that cared passionately about their country," he said. Beckham's global celebrity also turned him into a one-man marketing phenomenon with a glut of lucrative endorsements. He has long-standing sponsorship deals with firms including Adidas, Armani and Samsung and is believed to share a £200 million ($306 million, 237 million euros) fortune with his wife, Victoria, the pop star turned fashion designer and mother of his four children. However, he said he wanted to be remembered as a sportsman, rather than a celebrity. "I just want people to see me as a hard-working footballer," he told Sky Sports News. "People have looked at other things that have happened in my career and sometimes that's overshadowed what I've achieved on the pitch. As much as I say that doesn't hurt me, it does." He is due to play his final game for PSG at Lorient on May 26.
