HORSING MATTERS!
The oldest and most fruitful man-animal relationship is arguably the man-horse one. One fascinating aspect of this relationship is horse racing. As Royal Ascot, one of UK’s leading racecourses, prepares to honour its master, trainer Sir Henry Cecil, who saddled 75 winners, we take a close look at some of the best horse races the world over.

POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: With yesterday’s Union Cabinet expansion, the Centre has signalled its ‘care’ for the State, claims Congress, but the Opposition blasted a hole in the boast saying that the State Congress ministers had achieved nothing for the State. AP’s share of Central Cabinet has gone up to 12. If Jairam Ramesh, who hails from Karnataka but was elected to Rajya Sabha from AP, is added, the number would go up to 13. Among these ministers, five are holding Cabinet rank while one, Chiranjeevi, holds the post of minister of state with independent charge.

However, Opposition parties said that larger number of Cabinet ministers from the State did not mean any-
thing special for the 8.4 crore people of the State. Speaking to Postnoon on the issue, TDP senior leader Motkupally Narasimhulu said that the Congress leaders had grossly failed to achieve anything concrete from the Centre for the people of the State since 2004. “It is a fact that the State played a crucial role in formation of two consecutive UPA governments at the Centre since 2004. Despite this, our leaders did nothing for the development. They neither brought any development projects nor did they fight for allocation of funds,” he said. Another leader of TDP and Telangana TDP Forum chairman E Dayakar Rao (in pic) said that the Congress leaders should feel ashamed of their failures in achieving anything concrete for the State. “We have classic examples of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Mamata Benarjee before us. The two leaders have strived hard for the development of their states during their tenures as Union ministers. Both Bihar and WB have got huge amounts of funds because of these leaders,” he recalled. CPI floor leader Gunda Mallesh said the Congress ministers were simply larger in number but they did little for the people of the State.

HYDERABAD: Though Phase-1 of installations of “intelligent” signals has been completed at all the major junctions in the City, completion of Phase-2 of the Hyderabad Traffic Integrated Management System (HTRIMS) will still take another year, say officials. The highly ambitious project was proposed in 2011, however, so far only half the plan has taken shape. But some major junctions have been upgraded with intelligent signals powered by solar panels. Others will follow suit soon, police pointed out. Manpower shortage in the City traffic police had prompted the traffic police chiefs to take more technical help. The GHMC and the City’s traffic police had come up with the novel idea of installing H-TRIMS project to monitor traffic movements. The State government had sanctioned `66.3 crore for the project. As of now all the major junctions in the City have been upgraded with the intelligent signals and are powered by solar panels. Very soon, all the 180 already existing junctions and the 40 newly recognised signal junctions will be fitted with the intelligent signalling systems, say officials in the traffic department and at the GHMC. Though these signals work on solar power, to ensure that there is uninterrupted power service to the signalling systems, other sources of power supply like the commercial power supply and a battery backup are provided at all the junctions. “There are some bugs in the programming and that is the reason such issues are coming up. These bugs are being rectified and the problems will be solved soon,” says traffic DCP-2 Shyam Sunder. Adding that some more time will be taken for the completion of the ambitious project, he said, “Once all the traffic signal junctions are updated with the new technology, the signal systems would be connected to the traffic command centre at the police commissioner’s office in Basheerbagh in due course of time. Each junction has a pre-programmed signal timing table, depending upon the density of traffic in various directions at different times of the day, signal timing tables will be configured into the controller. police constantly monitor the functioning of these signals.” Motorists seem happy with the new and improved signalling systems. One of the problems of the old signals is that they are not properly visible. However, the new system has lights with high-intensity LEDs and the brightness can be adjusted automatically. “The new solar operated traffic signals seem to be more efficient. Though one problem is that the signal has been turning red very soon, otherwise the system works efficiently,” says Rajita Prasad, a motorist.

Airbus Military hopes to sell 400 of the aircraft over the next 30 years, on top of the 174 already ordered in Europe and in Malaysia. PATRICK RAHIR Agence France Presse PARIS: The A400M, a longawaited new military transport plane, will take to the skies at the upcoming Paris Air Show before finally setting out to conquer markets worldwide after a fouryear delay. Built by Airbus Military, the giant plane can carry helicopters, people or armoured vehicles weighing up to 37 tonnes over 3,300 kilometres and is able to land directly in combat areas on rough terrain, even on sand. “It allows operators to deliver strategic sized loads (such as armoured vehicles) directly to the point of need on remote and austere landing strips," says Gareth

FLIGHT OF FANTASY
Flying bike closer to reality?
LONDON: Scientists have developed the prototype of a 95kg remotely-controlled bike that can hover a few metres above ground for a full five minutes. Carrying a dummy rider, the electric prototype successfully took off, flew around and landed inside an exhibition hall in Prague in the Czech Republic. The bike is powered by two battery-run propellers on the front, two on the back and one on each side.

However, the machine is not quite ready to hit the road. he batteries only allow for a few minutes of flight before needing to be re-charged, BBC News reported. "Because the capacity of batteries doubles about every 10 years, we can expect that in the
future the capacity would be enough for the bike to used for sports, tourism or similar things," said the technical director of Duratec Bicycles, Milan Duchek. To create the bike, Duratec worked together with two other Czech firms, Technodat and Evektor. In August 2009, an IT teacher John Carver from Oxfordshire constructed what he called the "Flyke" — a flying tricycle — and flew it across the
UK for charity. Registered with the Civil Aviation Authority, Carver's machine is powered by a two-stroke twin propeller motor with a paraglider canopy and is equipped with a parachute, always open when the bike is in the air. The bike has to be refuelled about every two hours, is able to carry up to 25.4kg of luggage, and can reach a flying speed of about 32kmph. PTI

GHMC dreads divine blocks Unless the judiciary breathes down its neck, GHMC does not want to do the unpleasant task of removing religious structures occupying public places. POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Unless the judiciary breathes down its neck, the GHMC does not want to do the unpleasant task of removing religious structures occupying public places and roads. The GHMC mindset came through at a Prajavani programme when a senior citizen raised this issue. “As it is a sensitive issue, we do not want to touch that,” replied commissioner MT Krishna Babu. The citizen then wondered who would do it. It has been more than four years since the GHMC surveyed the City’s religious structures occupying public spaces and roads. This too was under the proddings of the High Court, not on its own. It was precisely in September 2009 when it came out with the detailed list of religious encroachments of public spaces. As per the 2009 survey, religious structures like temples or mosques or churches blocking public spaces totalled 533 and chillas and graveyards were 114.
In all, 357 roads have suffered encroachments by religious structures.
In all, 357 roads had suffered encroachments of this sort. Under pressure from the High Court, 26 structures were relocated. Then came the full force of religious pressures and the GHMC withdrew like one confronting a hooded cobra.

with 60 structures. Circles of 4 and 5, mostly areas of Charminar, had chillas and graveyards that numbered 37 and 30 respectively. The statement showed religious structures existing on footpaths and road margins, and proposed to removed some of the structures which occupied up to 300 sq yards on the roads. For instance, in Circle 10, religious structure on Road No 3, Banjara Hills, is listed as having 300 sq yards encroachment. Others with 250 sq yards encroachment include a religious structure at Tolichowki junction and one on Yousufguda main road. Another religious structure at the turning off Road No 1 and 12 of Banjara Hills sits on 200 sq yards. One in Ameerpet crossroads has 150 sq yards extra. Chief city planner GV Raghu admitted that the corporation did not conduct any survey in this direction in the recent years. “As there was a court order, we had to list the structures then. We removed some and relocated some, but the process did not proceed,” he said.

Pentagon lists ‘indefinite detainees’ WASHINGTON: The Pentagon released Monday the names of Guantanamo Bay’s 46 “indefinite detainees”, terror suspects considered too dangerous to transfer from the prison and who cannot be tried in court. The 15-page list, unveiling details about the prisoners for the first time, was released to The New York Times and The Miami Herald in response to freedom of information requests. It also included the names of all 166 detainees who remain at the US military jail in Cuba. The men designated for indefinite detention include 26 Yemenis, 12 Afghans, three Saudis, two Kuwaitis, two Libyans, a Kenyan, a Moroccan and a Somali. AROUND THE

Two of those men, both Afghans, have died. One committed suicide and the other died of a heart attack. The captives’ status is one of the most controversial aspects of the notorious prison camp. US official say that because the men were subjected to harsh interrogation techniques, such as the simulated drowning technique known as waterboarding, denounced as torture, they cannot be prosecuted because the evidence against them is tainted cannot be admitted in court. Rights groups welcomed the move but made fresh calls for the Obama administration to transfer the 86 detainees who have already been cleared to leave. AFP

Researchers want to introduce a human stem cell into an animal embryo, to create a so-called “chimeric embryo”, which they can AROUND THE

implant into an animal's womb. The hope is that this stem cell will grow into a fully-functioning human organ — a kidney or a liver, for example — as the animal matures. This would mean when the creature is fully grown, the organ could be harvested from the animal and used for transplanting into a person in need. “Experts will study what possibilities this kind of research will generate,” especially with regard to ethics and human dignity, a government official said. Snowden, who fled last month from his job at an NSA base in Hawaii to Hong Kong carrying with him a cache of secret documents, is unrepentant, and he vowed to expose more details about how US agents spy on private emails. “More detail on how direct

The government has opened a criminal probe into Snowden’s acts and partially confirmed his allegations by defending the programs to access Internet data and phone records, saying that they have thwarted dozens of terror attacks. The degree to which US agencies have direct access to private communications stored on servers operated by private Internet giants has proved to be one of the more controversial aspects of the revelations.

Rise of web anonymisers News of a massive surveillance effort led by the secretive NSA has sent web users scrambling to find new ways to avoid tracking. ROB LEVER Agence presse francaise WASHINGTON: It might have seemed paranoid not long ago when netizens used tools to hide their tracks, “shred” data or send self-destructing messages. Web anonymizers, encryption programs and similar tools have been available for years, but have been often associated with hackers, criminals and other “dark” elements on the Internet. “I think the notion of what is an unreasonable level of paranoia has shifted in the past couple of weeks,” said Alex Stamos, an NCC Group security consultant and self-described “white hat” hacker. Ironically, some tools for eluding detection come from US government-funded programs aimed at helping people living under authoritarian regimes. “The real problem is that many people don’t know these tools exist and a lot of them are not usable to non-geeks,” said Sascha Meinrath, who heads a New America Foundation program helping users maintain secure and private communications in totalitarian countries. One of the well-known programs used to hide online traces is Tor, a tool originally developed

by the US military and now managed by the nonprofit Tor Project. Tor, which has some 500,000 users worldwide, about 15 per cent of whom are in the United States, can be used online to hide one’s IP address, effectively blocking tracking by governments or commercial entities seeking to deliver targeted advertising. Tor’s development director Karen Reilly said the US government promotes the program in other countries, but noted that it also protects against snooping from US law enforcement.
Graham Cluley, a British-based independent security consultant, said people who use privacy tools should not be viewed as criminals. “We get inquiries from law enforcement saying criminals are using Tor, and they want to know where the back door is,” she said. “There is no back door. We are protecting you not only from your (Internet provider) but from
us. We never keep records that can identify our users.” People in the hacker and security communities say they are not surprised about the National Security Agency’s PRISM program, but that its scope and its ability to scoop up huge amounts of data — if reports are correct — are frightening. “The problem is we are keeping ‘gold’ in databases and it’s impossible to secure this,” said Nico Sell, a founder of Wickr, a startup that makes an app to allow people to secure and “shred” data sent on mobile devices. “People are now realising that they get more security and are switching over from Skype.” “All of our messages selfdestruct... everyone has wanted
self-destructing messages since ‘Mission Impossible,’” she said. Casey Oppenheim, cofounder of an online identitymasking program called disconnect.me, said he has surprisingly not seen a surge in downloads since the revelations, adding that it is not clear if Web users understand the implications of PRISM. Oppenheim said the databases of major firms contain history of Web browsing searching which he called “highly personal.” In the browsing area, the search engine DuckDuckGo, which does not store IP addresses, said it has seen record growth. “I think since the story broke, people have been seeking out privacy alternatives,” said DuckDuckGo founder Gabriel Weinberg. In those two and twenty years, they have performed in Hyderabad many times, so much so that the band has lost count. Twenty-five to 30 times, Subir Malik, manager, founder and keyboardist of the band, says. LUCKNOW/DEHRADUN: Rains lashed Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh for the fourth consecutive day Tuesday, taking up the toll to 58 and leaving over 58,000 people wet and miserable after they got stranded. Officials continued with the rescue operations in rain-hit areas as the toll in the two states climbed to 58. KURDISH CULTURE
DISGRACE
Traditional footwear thrives in Iraqi town
The footwear is believed — according to legend — to have first been worn by Zoroaster, the founder of the eponymous religion. MOHAMAD ALI HARISSI Agence France-Presse HALABJA: Between pots of glue and scraps of cotton, Bahjat Majeed sits cross-legged in his tiny workshop, putting the final touches on a pair of handmade shoes traditionally crafted in his hometown of Halabja. The meticulously-crafted “klash”, which trace their roots back several hundred years, remain a key feature of Kurdish culture even as the threeprovince autonomous region in north Iraq has seen breakneck economic development. The shoes feature soles made of cotton fabrics and cow hide, and upper vamps that are made with knitted wool thread, and are usually worn by men on special occasions such as the Kurdish new year celebrations of Nowruz. “I have been doing this for 15 years,” Majeed, 34, says proudly. I cannot think of a better job. I make a traditional symbol of Kurdish culture. This is wonderful.” Klash are made in one of three colours — white, red or blue — or some combination of the three, and do not differentiate between the left and right foot. The shoes are known in particular for their sturdiness.
AROUND THE
WORLD
Klash are made in one of three colours — white, red or blue — or some combination of the three, and do not differentiate between the left and right foot. The shoes are known in particular for their sturdiness.
They are produced by artisans in the town of Halabja, which lies in a mountainous region near the Iranian border and some 250 kilometres (155 miles) northeast of Baghdad. The town, however, is sadly more famous as the site of what is thought to have been the worst ever gas attack targeting civilians. In March 1988, as Iraq’s eight-year war with Iran was coming to an end, Kurdish peshmerga rebels, with Tehran’s backing, took over the farming community of Halabja near the border with the Islamic republic. Now-executed dictator
Saddam Hussein’s forces bombed the area, forcing the rebels to retreat into the surrounding hills, leaving their families behind. Iraqi jets then swooped over the small town and for five hours sprayed it with nerve agents. An estimated 5,000 people were killed, mostly women and children. But historically Halabja and the surrounding area have been known for the klash. And Majeed is an expert in making these handmade shoes. He deftly passes cotton threads between his toes before connecting them to small machines that wrap them together, helping form, in this case, what will become the sole of the shoe. A few metres from Majeed’s studio, Akram Mustafa tries to convince passing customers to pick up a new pair of klash, showcasing various varieties that sell for between 40,000 and 75,000 Iraqi dinars (between $33 and $62). It was by chance that Mustafa became fascinated with the traditional Kurdish footwear, when he began selling them on the side of the road while unemployed 16 years ago. Since then, his “love” for the shoes has constantly grown.
US naval footballers face rape charges WASHINGTON: Several football players at the US Naval Academy are due to face criminal charges in connection with the alleged rape of a female midshipman, officials said. A probe by the Naval Criminal Investigation Service “has been completed and reviewed” and the senior officer in charge “has decided to send this case” to a preliminary hearing, known in the military courts as Article 32 proceedings, spokesman Commander John Schofield said in a statement late Monday. Authorities were expected to release details of the charges soon. AROUND THE

The case is the latest at the elite military academies that has highlighted a wider problem in the armed forces with sexual assault, with advocates saying victims have been too intimidated to come forward. BREAKTHROUGH
Cancer clues uncovered LONDON: In a breakthrough, scientists believe they have finally discovered why cancer spreads, a vital clue that may pave way for developing a cure for the deadly disease. A mechanism that cells use to group together and move round the body — called ‘chase and run’ — has been described for the first time by scientists at University College London (UCL). The new study focuses on the process that occurs when cancer cells interact with healthy cells in order to migrate around the body during metastasis. Scientists know that cancer cells recruit healthy cells and use them to travel long distances, but how this process takes place and how it could
be controlled to design new therapies against cancer remains unknown. Now, using embryonic cells called ‘neural crest cells’, and placode cells which are the precursors for cranial nerves (the equivalent to healthy cells) researchers have started to unravel this process. AROUND THE
WORLD
They have found that when neural crest cells are put next to placode cells they undergo a dramatic transformation and start ‘chasing’ the placode cells. At the same time placode cells exhibit ‘escape’ behaviour when contacted by neural crest cells. The
chasing behaviour depends on the production of small chemical molecules by the placode cells that attracts neural crest cells toward them. Researchers are confident that the process whereby cancer cells attached to healthy cells in order to migrate around the body is comparable. Healthy cells of the body try to escape from tumour cells, but are followed by malignant cells because the healthy cells produce an attractant for the cancer cells. “The findings suggest an alternative way in which cancer treatments might work in the future,” Dr Roberto Mayor, lead author of the study, said. The study was published in the journal Nature Cell Biology. PTI

A BLACK PRESENT A BLEAK FUTURE A N D
Little has been done to change a huge rich-poor divide that sees roughly a quarter of Manila’s 12 million people surviving on a dollar a day or less.
SARAH TAGUIAM Agence France-Presse MANILA: A sinewy man covered in thick soot stands in a grey cloud of smoke, watching over a slow-burning pile of wood that sustains his life but may also eventually kill him. Nearby, emaciated children with their bones visible through their skin bet over a game of dice using charcoal instead of money. More than 1,500 people live in this makeshift charcoal factory in one of the sprawling slums that dominate large chunks of the Philippine capital of Manila. They mine a neighbouring garbage dump for scraps of wood, which they place into crude furnaces. After a week the charcoal is placed into sacks and hauled off to market. While the country’s rich enjoy electricity and gas delivered into their homes, charcoal remains a vital source of fuel for the poor masses. The Philippines, for decades one of the Asia’s economic laggards, has attracted global attention for remarkable growth since President Benigno Aquino came to power in 2010.

people surviving on a dollar a day or less. Nowhere can the chasm be felt as deeply as Ulingan, the squatter community whose residents make their living
from charcoal. Among them is 34-year-old Rose Mingote, whose creases in her tired face are filled with black powder after a night of filling sacks. “I am not sure if I can bring a child into this kind of world," says Mingote, who has been married for four years. “This is as good as it gets
for me." On a nearby broken bench that alternates as a sleeping space, a mother and her three children share a single plate of rice. The youngest of the three stares blankly into the distance, with only a ripped tarpaulin providing shade. Everyone is forced to inhale the smoke that billows from the charcoal pits, turning the dire landscape into an eerie monochrome. Those who toil here risk contracting a range of health problems, from respiratory illness to skin disease. Juan Villa, an outreach worker with local charity group Project Pearls, says asthma, bronchitis and lung cancer are major problems at Ulingan. Project Pearls has helped some of the slum dwellers relocate, but most are reluctant to go. Despite the daily torture, making charcoal can return up to 2,000 pesos ($50) a week, providing a better existence than for many others in the slums. “To everyone else, this is dirty, but to poor people like me, it’s our source of life," says mother-of-three Madelyn Rosales, 33.

Japan’s Skymark Airlines said it had put down firm orders for four 737 MAX aircraft, becoming the first Japanese airline to set its sights on Boeing’s new medium-haul plane, in a deal worth $402 million at catalogue prices. Leasing firm GECAS, meanwhile, ordered 10 787 Dreamliners worth $2.9 billion at list prices, while Qatar Airways announced orders for nine 777s — two firm, and seven options, worth $2.8 billion.

Jobs emails hang over Apple trial
Government prosecutors argue that they help establish a pattern of Apple serving as a ‘ringleader’. NEW YORK: The late Steve Jobs took center stage Monday in the latest twist in the Apple antitrust trial on ebooks. A federal court attempted to plumb the meaning of a series of unsent emails Jobs addressed to Eddy Cue, an Apple senior vice president assigned with negotiating ebook contracts with major publishers in late 2009 and early 2010 before the launch of the iPad. Even though the emails were never sent, government prosecutors argue that they help establish a pattern of Apple serving as a “ringleader” in a conspiracy with the publishers to force the retail book industry to adopt higher prices of ebooks. All of the draft emails responded to a message from Cue outlining the emerging price of Apple ebooks, which would be $12.99 or $14.99, up from the $9.99 Amazon had
sold for bestsellers. In most of the drafts, dated January 14, 2010, Jobs is seen picking over the impact of the emerging deal between Apple and the publishers, according to testimony.
This included the effects of an Apple “most favored nation” (MFN) provision requiring publishers to make available to Apple any ebook
offered on another retailer for the same price. The bombshell was a draft note to Cue in which Jobs said, “I can live with this as long as they move Amazon to the agent model too for new releases for the first year.” “If they don’t, I’m not sure we can be competitive.” The Amazon note appears to be the last draft email in the series, said Cue. It is also the only one in the series signed by Jobs. US Justice Department lawyer Lawrence Buterman depicted Jobs’s draft Amazon email as part of a pattern of Apple demanding publishers to change their terms from a “wholesale” model in which retailers set price to an “agency” model in which publishers set price but guaranteed booksellers a 30 percent commission. The government contends this shift led to higher ebook prices. AFP
EU, US discuss FTA ENNISKILLEN: The European Union and the United States on Monday launched long-awaited formal negotiations to create what would be the world’s biggest ever free trade area. US President Barack Obama said the first round of negotiations on a pact aimed at creating jobs and boosting the fragile global economy would take place in Washington next month. Speaking just before the
start of the G8 summit in Lough Erne, Northern Ireland, British Prime Minister David Cameron said: “We are talking about what could be the biggest bilateral deal in history. The process is expected to take up to two years, an ambitious target for such complex international talks. If a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) can be reached it would be the world’s largest: trade in

goods between the United States and the 27-country EU last year was worth some 500 billion euros ($670 billion), with another 280 billion euros in services and trillions in investment flows. The EU says establishing a Free Trade Agreement would add about 119 billion euros annually to the EU economy, and 95 billion euros for the United States. AFP

PARIS: The board of French telecom operator Orange on Monday voted to retain Stephane Richard as company boss after he was charged in a corruption probe linked to IMF chief Christine Lagarde when she was French finance minister. The board meeting came just hours after President Francois Hollande said in a television interview that he had instructed the three state members on the board to vote for Richard staying on at the helm of the company. The French state is a major shareholder in Orange, which was formerly France Telecom. Richard was Lagarde’s chief of staff when, in 2008, she sanctioned a state payout of 400 million euros ($515m) to disgraced tycoon Bernard Tapie.

GREEK TV TO REOPEN ATHENS: A Greek court on Monday suspended the government’s shock decision to shut down state broadcaster ERT and ordered it reopened until a new national media body can be set up. The ruling by the Council of State — Greece’s top administrative court — came six days after the sudden closure that triggered national outrage and destabilised the coalition government. It was announced after Prime Minister Antonis Samaras himself proposed a temporary reopening until a government move to form a new state broadcaster can be approved by parliament.

ith its church and main street, Gravelbourg seems like just another Canadian prairie town. But it has a little known claim to fame — as prime producer of the world’s mustard seeds. And growing beneath its placid exterior is a movement to depose France’s Dijon as the globe’s condiment king. A two-hour drive through farm country from the Saskatchewan provincial capital Regina, the town of 1,200 established in 1906 by four brothers from Quebec “is now at the heart of mustard production," boasts its mayor, Real Forest. Canada produces 35 to 40 percent of the world’s mustard seeds, with Gravelbourg at the core of this output. The mustard seed was only introduced in the Canadian province in the 1940s, five centuries after Dijon in eastern France, which made it famous. But France’s Burgundy region no longer mass-produces the seeds and the last big mustard manufacturing plant in Dijon was shuttered in 2008 after being taken over by Anglo-Dutch multinational Unilever. So Gravelbourg now has the chance to step up and seize mustard glory. The problem is “we sell the raw materials which go elsewhere... and the benefits also go elsewhere," laments Forest, who is searching for investors to help locals kick-start their dreams. — ‘Made in Saskatchewan’ — More and more Canadian resource sectors — such as forestry and diamond mining — are seeking to process raw materials into finished products for export to reap greater economic benefits.

man stood still in Istanbul’s Taksim Square: silent, staring straight ahead, he had not moved
for hours. His peaceful action, on the square that police cleared of protesters on Saturday and where the Turkish authorities have banned gatherings, was a new form of protest. He arrived Monday evening as night was falling and took up position in the middle of the square, just a stone’s throw from Gezi Park.
It was a police crackdown on a peaceful protest against plans to redevelop the square that spiralled into nationwide demonstrations. Five hours on, the man was still there, hands in his pockets, a bag and some bottles of water at his feet. He was staring at a portrait of the revered founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk that hangs from the top of the old cultural centre.
Ataturk who established Turkey as a secular state. Word spread quickly online: on Twitter, the hashtags #Duranadam and #standingman ran a steady stream of comments, together with some photos on the event. Hundreds of people approached the square to see for themselves. The man behind this ‘happening’ was choreographer Erdem Gunduz: his one-man protest was designed to get around the ban on gatherings in the square. On Saturday, police used tear gas and water cannon to clear both the square and the park of thousands of demonstrators, depriving them of the symbolic heart of their protest. It was a May 31 police crackdown on a peaceful protest against plans to redevelop the square that spiralled into nationwide demonstrations against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Islamic-rooted government. Now police officers surround the square, preventing any further gatherings. For this new protest to work, Gunduz’s friends positioned themselves outside the square in a bid to prevent well-wishers trying to approach him. “We want to protect him from any provocation," said one of them, Asma, a young Turkish
woman, as she tried to keep the gathering onlookers back. “He has to be alone in the middle of the square, otherwise the police will use the pretext of a gathering to clear everyone away," she explained. Gradually, a human chain formed an immense circle around him. Some of the youths there began arguing over whether to join him or stay well clear, as Gunduz’s friends wanted. The choreographer’s plan was to stay standing still there for a month, breaking every 24 hours for three hours’ rest, while a friend took his place. It was not long however before others joined in.
A group of youths took up position beside him, following his gaze towards Ataturk — at which point the police moved in. The Standing Man had time to leave, surrounded by a group of friends: others were not so lucky. Officers detained around 10 youths in a police bus, as photographers recorded the event. After they were driven from the square and the park on Saturday, members of the protest movement talked about the need to find new ways of getting their message across. Erdem Gunduz appears to have done just that.

on’t blame the weather for your gloominess. Good rainfall last week and the forecast of further rains due to an active South-West monsoon prompts farmers to sow crops in 50,000 hectares more than last year in Andhra Pradesh. The acreage is expected to increase 25-30 per cent over the normal area of 81.12 lakh hectares, if the current trend continues. The State has received 69 per cent excess rainfall against 73 per cent deficit last year as on June 15. This was the highest surplus over normal since 2003. With the result, the farmers have raised nurseries for paddy or taken up ploughing for commercial crops over 4.06 lakh hectares against the normal of 3.51 lakh hectares. Andhrites can expect two to three lakh hectares more under paddy and one lakh hectares under cotton if the present good rains continued. Unexpectedly, 16 districts have received excess rainfall this year while all the 23 districts faced a deficit till date. Five districts had normal except Nellore, which showed negative level this year. Adilabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Warangal and Vizianagaram are beneficiaries of the surplus rain.

ealth magazines say that no matter how busy you are, take out time to eat. Turns out, companies have taken the advice seriously. Office cafeterias, whether of multinationals or not, offer food that is just like home-cooked, various cuisines, and food that is high on the health quotient. And, employees are happy, and very motivated, too. Having a live pasta counter and a pain puri vendor at the office cafeteria would have been the wackiest of ideas 10 years ago. Until Google did it. As part of the Google culture, kith and kin of its employees have grabbed every opportunity to eat here. “Google cafeteria is amazing! I keep insisting that my brother who works there, take me as a guest, and bring back sandwiches, or chocolates. Times have changed so much that a good cafeteria is essential to make an office desirable. About six years ago, when my brother described the cafeteria
to us, we were highly impressed. It was very fascinating to us because an office giving away unlimited chocolates for free of cost was absolutely unheard of,” says 21-year-old Uzma Khan, a college student. Just like restaurants are designed keeping the popular demand in mind, so are these cafeterias. When eating healthy is a trend, you will find a colourful salad bar. They have Indian-Chinese food because who does not like those spicy noodles! They also understand
you are away from home in another city and to an Indian, nothing is better than homecooked food. “Videocon clearly understands that. During festive seasons, even richer dishes of Indian food are served,” says 24-year-old Devashish Rathi, regional manager, Videocon. Companies are not only pleasing you with delicious food, they are also ensuring that you eat healthy. “The menu in our corporate office in Delhi is designed keeping the vitamins and minerals intake required.
They have looked into what amounts of brown rice, sprouts, fruits, etc must be taken,” says Devashish. Maybe it is a defined strategy or mere common sense but looks like this practice works well for both employees and the company. “When I was in Delhi, I used to feel light and energetic even after a filling meal. But now, because the menu is dominated by rice, I feel lazy after.” Efficiency and productivity are keywords here. By providing good food to employees, companies relieve them of the many headaches of meeting the basic need of food. However, there is the matter of monotony. “They serve a vegetarian buffet in my office everyday. It gets boring,” says Shashank Varma, an employee at Sales Force. These little issues do not come in the way of a cafeteria's popularity. It is free food, or food at highly subsidised rates, there is food of all kinds and it is in one building. “Free food is a big reason why I go to office more regularly,” concludes Shashank.
hail from Manipur. There were not many career options for us where I come from. Most of us just study till 10th class and then opt for vocational trainings so that it’s easier to get jobs. But we don't have jobs in our State. So we move to big cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Chennai to seek employment. Since there are a lot of employment opportunities in the hospitality industry for us, we end up training in these fields. I grew up wanting to be a doctor. But I didn't have the resources to pursue my studies. So I enrolled in an hotel management institute that promised I'll find a job after the course. So, I joined a five-star hotel afterwards and instead of a doctor, I became a massage therapist. A lot of people wink, make snide remarks, taunt me when I tell what I do for a living. As if it is a euphemism for something more sinister. But they don't know how much hard work and training goes into becoming a masseur. I've taken as many anatomy classes as perhaps any medical student. Few realise that I can easily break a bone or tear a muscle if I go wrong. I had to pass three exams including two practicals before I qualified, and had to train for three years in Ayurveda, Thai, Swedish, Shaitsu techniques before I could start. Most customers are wellbehaved. Female customers almost always ask for a masseuse of the same gender. It's men who ask for women therapists. But some of them have strange requests that I will not accommodate. Some are so fat that it's hard for me to reach the tissues. Some are so thin, their bones seem like brittle. But what's common is that all of them are almost always stressed out. Getting a person to relax is not easy. Even when they come to a spa, most customers are still preoccupied with something or the other. Some talk incessantly. Some of them insist on bringing their cell phones to the massage. I firmly refuse. A surprising number of them fall asleep. I know then that I've done a good job. I might not be a doctor, but I still give palliative care to people and that makes me happy.

Technology BIG BROTHER DIARIES
U
S tech giant Apple revealed on Monday it received between 4,000 and 5,000 data requests in six months from US authorities, days after Facebook and Microsoft released similar information. Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and several other top Internet and technology companies have come under heightened scrutiny since word leaked of a vast, covert Internet surveillance program US authorities insist targets only foreign terror suspects and has helped thwart attacks. In a statement on its web site, Apple said in the period between December 1, 2012 and May 31, 2013, federal, state and local law enforcement had requested customer information up to 5,000 times, related to between 9,000 and 10,000 accounts or devices. Most commonly, these requests were related to criminal investigations, searches for missing children or patients with Alzheimer’s disease, or hoping to prevent
a suicide, Apple said. But the iPhone maker said it works vigorously to protect the privacy of its users and only provides information by court order. “Regardless of the circumstances, our legal team conducts an evaluation of each request and, only if appropriate, we retrieve and deliver the narrowest possible set of information to the authorities,” it said, noting that sometimes the requests were denied altogether. Apple also specified certain types of communications are protected, such as FaceTime and iMessage conversations, which are “protected by end-to-end encryption so no one but the sender and receiver can see or read them.” “Apple cannot decrypt that data,” the statement said. “Similarly, we do not store data related to customers’ location, Map searches or Siri requests in any identifiable
form.” Facebook said Friday it had received between 9,000 and 10,000 requests for user data affecting 18,000 to 19,000 accounts during the second half of last year, while Microsoft said it had received 6,000 to 7,000 requests affecting 31,000 to 32,000 accounts during the same period. Both firms said they were prohibited by law from listing a separate tally for security-related requests or secret court orders concerning terror probes. Internet freedom group The Center for Democracy & Technology praised the release as an “important step” but urged the government to allow the companies to release further details. There has been a public backlash for the tech companies since government contractor Edward Snowden leaked details of PRISM, a vast program that saw nine

companies turn over user data to the US National Security Agency. Leaked details of the program -- first published by Britain’s Guardian newspaper and The Washington Post -have reignited debate over the trade-offs between privacy and security more than a decade after the September 11 attacks. The companies have denied claims the NSA could directly access their servers. US authorities have said the program was legal and limited. FBI Director Robert Mueller told lawmakers last week the program could have prevented 9/11 and said the leaks had caused “significant harm to our nation and to our safety.” He also confirmed that Snowden was the subject of a criminal investigation. Snowden, a 29-year-old IT technician, has gone to ground in Hong Kong, where he had surfaced for media interviews after the leaks were published. He has vowed to contest any extradition order in court.

She said: “The jeans he wears are torn up at the bottom and you can tell that they’re not brand new. Lovato revealed she even has a special nickname for Simon. She laughed: “He calls me Gobby, and I guess that means that I talk a lot or something. I call him Grampa or Grandma.” IANS

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

or a huge portion of the human race, the only thing worse than the pun I used in title of this article is the fact that Tom Hiddleston will not be returning for The Avengers 2. Joss Whedon confirmed the news during an Empire Movie Podcast to discuss his latest offering, the retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Speaking of the superhero blockbuster sequel’s progress, Whedon commented: “I’ve turned in a first draft, but the story is very set. Everybody’s very much on board with the exact movie I’m trying to make which is what worked the first time.” But when pressed for a bit more information Whedon said: “Imitating what I did before is the surest way to do it not as well. Second of all, and Loki is not there to say those terrible things.” So there you have it. Not all that surprising really, considering that Loki has already been the main antagonist in two of Marvel’s films, Thor and The Avengers, and he’ll also be returning for Thor: The Dark World in November this year. Whedon is right that The Avengers 2 simply can’t tread familiar ground, especially when Loki’s anger and identity issues could get old fast. Luckily, it seems as though Loki will be teaming up with his brother Thor in some capacity for Thor: The Dark World. No matter what, whoever takes over villain duties in THE AVENGERS2 has some pretty big shoes to fill. Thor: The Dark World stars Chris Hemsworth, Christopher Eccleston, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston and Anthony Hopkins. It hits cinemas 8th November.

WIMBLEDON PREVIEW
Federer staring at history DAVE JAMES Agence France-Presse PARIS: Ten years after Roger Federer (right) made his Grand Slam breakthrough at Wimbledon, the 17-time major winner returns to the All England Club next week as defending champion, but with the clock ticking. The Swiss put his growing army of critics firmly in their place in 2012 when, after back-toback quarter-final defeats, he captured his seventh Wimbledon title, equalling the record of Pete Sampras. Federer, meanwhile, ended a 10-month title drought at the weekend when he won the Halle grasscourt tournament for the sixth time — it was his first piece of silverware since Cincinnati on the eve of the 2012 US Open. That would have spiced up his confidence ahead of Wimbledon, but there are huge doubts over whether or not he can carry
that spring in his elegant step onto the famous lawns of south-west London and be the first man to win Wimbledon eight times. Age is a factor. Federer will be 32 in August while Sampras won the last of his Wimbledon titles as a 28-year-old in 2000. An eighth victory for Federer next month would make him the
second oldest champion at Wimbledon in the Open era, just behind Arthur Ashe who was six days short of his 32nd birthday when he triumphed in 1975. Then there will be the allimportant seedings which will be announced on Wednesday where Rafael Nadal is likely to be seeded five.
Meco Racing and fourth-place finisher Mrinal Chatterjee of Rayo Racing were awarded second and third positions respectively. Kush Saini said, “It was amazing weekend. First day rain, second day cloudy and Sunday was a sunny day. We all racers got great opportunity to race in all conditions.” In Micro Max category, defending champion and gifted driver Pradyumn V Danigund of Meco Racing with Mohite dominated the Final, Heat 1, and Qualifying races of Round 1 of the championship. He started at second position and fought a strong battle with second-place finisher Yash Aradhya of Meco Racing throughout the race. Third-place finisher and Bangalore boy Paul Francis of Meco Racing gave tough competition to two racers and managed to overtake them for a few laps.Speaking at the post- race conference, Pradyumn said, “This is a nice beginning for me in this season. I will try to continue this performance in the next round”. Overall the race day was fun and Nayan Chatterjee won in Senior Max Category, Pradyumn V Danigund and Kush Maini dominated Micro Max and Junior Max Respectively.

But until Merion Golf Club on Sunday, none of them had been able to lift one of the sports’s four major titles — US and British Opens, Masters and PGA Championship. Sri Lanka oust Aussies, qualify for semifinals
Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan (C) celebrates with team mates after taking the catch to dismiss Clint McKay, the final wicket as they beat Australia in their AFP/ADRIAN DENNIS ICC Champions Trophy match at the Oval in London on Monday. Sri Lanka won the match by 20 runs.
KULDIP LAL Agence France-Presse LONDON: Sri Lanka reached the Champions Trophy semifinals with a 20-run victory over holders Australia in the last league match at the Oval in London on Monday. The Sri Lankans, who needed a win to stay in the competition, relied on aggressive half-centuries from Mahela Jayawardene and Lahiru Thirimanne to score 253-8 after being sent in to bat. Seamer Nuwan Kulasekara then picked up three wickets, effected a run-out and took a catch as the Australians were bowled out for 233 in 42.3 overs. Sri Lanka and England finished level with four points each, but the hosts topped the group due to a superior net run-rate and will meet Group B runnersup South Africa in Wednesday’s semi-final at the Oval. Sri Lanka will clash with Group B winners India in the second semi-final in Cardiff on Thursday in a a repeat of the 2011 World Cup final in Mumbai which the Indians won. The final is at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Sunday. Jayawardene, who became the eighth batsman to complete 11,000 one-day runs when he reached 62, anchored the middleorder with an unbeaten 84 off 81 balls.
“It felt good to get to 11,000 runs, but winning this game was the icing on the cake,” said the 36-year-old former captain, who was named the man of the match. “We are playing hard and passionate cricket. That has been the mantra of our success in the past and I hope it continues in the future also. “We look forward to another tough match in the semi-final.” Australia, who needed to win in 29.1 overs to qualify, made a
brave bid to secure their first victory in the tournament with belligerent batting led by Adam Voges’ top score of 49. The Aussies were 192-9 when the last-wicket pair of Clint McKay and Xavier Doherty gave Sri Lanka a fright by adding 41 amid mounting tension. Tillakaratne Dilshan ended the drama with a spectacular return catch to dismiss McKay, who made a career-best 30. Doherty remained unbeaten on 15.
“It would have been nice to get over the line in the end,” Australian captain George Bailey said. “Our goal was to do it in 29 overs, but we never got going. But it was good to see the last two fight it out.” The fightback would have been followed keenly by New Zealand, who would have joined England in the semi-finals if the last pair had scored the remaining runs. In the end, the Black Caps were stranded on three points,

one behind both England and Sri Lanka. Australia finished with just one point through a rainaffected game. Glenn Maxwell, a milliondollar signee with Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians, smashed 32 off 20 balls before he was bowled off his IPL team-mate Lasith’s Malinga third delivery. Kulasekara, who bowled Shane Watson and had Phil Hughes caught behind, ran out Bailey with a direct throw from fine leg to make it 69-4 in the ninth over. Matthew Wade picked up the scoring rate with a 22-ball 31 that contained four boundaries and a six, adding 47 for the sixth wicket with Voges. Voges was ninth out, caught in the deep off Rangana Herath, before McKay and Doherty put on their defiant stand.

England eye ‘massive’ success JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse CARDIFF: England may be looking ahead to defending the Ashes but off-spinner James Tredwell reckons winning the Champions Trophy would be an “absolutely massive” achievement in itself. Despite nearly four decades of trying, England have still to win an International Cricket Council (ICC) one-day international event. Graham Gooch, now the team’s batting coach, appeared as a player in England’s three losing World Cup finals — in 1979, 1987 and 1992 — while the last time the Champions Trophy was held in England in 2004, a side led by Michael Vaughan lost a dramatic final to the West Indies at The Oval Indeed England’s only major title in cricket’s shorter formats is the 2010 World Twenty20 they won in the Caribbean. But they moved a step closer to ending their trophy drought in the ODI game with a 10-run win
over New Zealand in Cardiff on Sunday that saw them into the semi-finals of the ongoing Champions Trophy tournament in Britain. Tredwell has become a symbol of England’s growing strength in depth in the 50-over game in that he often only gets
his chance when Graeme Swann, England’s premier off-spinner across all formats, is injured. However, such has been Tredwell’s admirable consistency it is no longer a surprise to see him performing well at international level, with the 31-year-old Kent bowler filling in admirably
for Swann in three of England’s last four ODIs — all victories compared to the seven-wicket Group A loss to Sri Lanka. Many England fans viewed the Champions Trophy, a tournament featuring the world’s top eight ODI sides, as a distraction from the rather more important business of a third straight Test campaign win over Australia when they face their arch-rivals in a five-match series starting in Nottingham next month. But Tredwell is in no doubt that winning the Champions Trophy would be a significant success in its own right. “We have as a good chance now (of winning this tournament) as any team in the next stage. That’s an absolutely massive thing,” said Tredwell. “We don’t want to look too far ahead - to lifting that trophy, we hope - but equally, it’s something that’s in the back of your mind. “The semi-final is going to be tough, but we’re two games away now from winning a major tournament.”
Swann is currently sidelined with calf and back problems but England captain Alastair Cook stressed Sunday there was no need to rush him back such was his confidence in Tredwell. “I’m in the squad and I’m getting a game here and there,” Tredwell said. “I don’t think I’ve let anyone down in the games I’ve played, so I hope that can continue. For my part it’s fingers crossed, isn’t it? But again Swanny’s been brilliant, hasn’t he, for a period of time. So if he’s fit, I’m sure he’ll come into the reckoning — as they say.” Tredwell added: “I’ve got a few games under my belt and shown what I can do. When every game comes around now, I’m chomping at the bit to get on the park.” England are generally reluctant to field two specialist spinners in the same side with Tredwell and Swann appearing together on national service just three times, all in the sub-continent, at the 2011 World Cup and on the 2009/10 Test tour of Bangladesh.
Coach Mike Hesson laments New Zealand’s failure to grab chance CARDIFF: New Zealand coach Mike Hesson (left)was left ruing his side’s failure to take their chances after the Black Caps’ exit from the Champions Trophy was confirmed on Monday. The Kiwis were already on the brink of bowing out after a 10-run defeat by England in a rainreduced 24 overs per side clash in Cardiff on Sunday. And their fate was sealed when Sri Lanka beat defending champions Australia by 20 runs in Monday’s final pool match at The Oval to join tournament hosts England as one of the two semi-finalists out of Group A.
Against England, New Zealand slumped to 61 for five chasing 170 for victory before a stand of 73 between Kane Williamson (67) and one-day international debutant Corey Anderson (30) got them back on course. However, both batsmen fell in the closing stages, leaving what had looked like a gettable target just beyond New Zealand’s reach. “I don’t know if it was lacking killer instinct,” Hesson told reporters in a telephone conference call in Cardiff on Monday. “In the chase we got ourselves a long way behind. We kept on losing wickets to the new ball, the ball seamed a little bit and we sort of struggled to cope. It wasn’t until Corey and Kane got together that we gave ourselves a chance. “It’s a disappointing way to end. It was a big opportunity for us yesterday (Sunday) and we couldn’t quite grab it.” Despite that defeat, New Zealand, who beat Sri
Lanka by one wicket in a low scoring thriller in Cardiff and saw their match against Australia end in a no result washout, could still have reached the last four. They needed defending champions Australia to beat Sri Lanka on Monday but by an insufficiently large margin to overtake New Zealand’s superior net run-rate. After Sri Lanka made 253 for eight batting first, Australia had to reach their target of 254 in 29.1 overs to qualify for the semifinals. But having failed in that goal, Australia — who didn’t win a match in the tournament — kept going. They were 192 for nine when the last-wicket pair of Clint McKay and Xavier Doherty gave New Zealand hope Australia would achieve exactly the kind of narrow victory that would send the Black Caps into the knockout stages by adding 41 for the last wicket. But the trans-Tasman aid on
offer at The Oval ended when Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan held a superb caught and bowled chance to dismiss McKay. And that meant the end of a run which had seen New Zealand make at least the semifinals of the last four International Cricket Council 50over world events. “When Australia ended up bowling first, it was always going to be difficult because Australia chasing, obviously they were pretty committed to trying to chase it in 29 overs,” said Hesson. “I guess you either get there or you blow up. “Once they ended up batting second, it decreased our chances a lot.” However, Hesson said McKay and Doherty had given his side a glimmer of hope. “We realised there was a little sniff there. Those two were batting quite nicely but I guess you can’t rely on others to do you favours.” AFP

Nigeria see off Tahiti
The Nigerians always had an extra gear against minnows Tahiti and a hat-trick by Nigeria’s forward Nnamdi Oduamadi spearheaded their victory. BELO HORIZONTE: African champions Nigeria as expected beat minnows Tahiti 6-1 in their Confederations Cup opening Group B match on Monday in Belo Horizonte, but they were given a run for their money for a while. However, the Nigerians always had an extra gear and a hat-trick by Nigeria’s forward Nnamdi Oduamadi spearheaded their victory. Nigeria took less than five minutes to open their account through an unfortunate own goal by Nicolas Villar — possession having originally fallen to the Nigerians with a rebound off the referee — and the Super Eagles doubled their lead in the 10th minute through Oduamadi. He was to add another later in the half when the Tahitian

‘keeper Xavier Samin spilled the ball at his feet. Tahiti got a deserved reward when John Tehau rose at the back post to head home in the 54th minute and spark the Tahitians’ traditional air paddling a canoe celebrations. However, Tehau turned villain for his side as he scored an own goal followed by Oduamadi’s third and a final one by Uwa Echiejile wrapped things up.

Japan look to avoid early exit CHRIS WRIGHT Agence France-Presse RECIFE: The task facing both Asian champions Japan and three-time world champions Italy is clear cut in Recife at the Confederations Cup. An Italian win, on the heels of Sunday’s success over Olympic champions Mexico should propel the Azzurri into the semi-finals, while also ending the Blue Samurais’ interest in this summer’s event. The pressure is off Japan to a large extent in that, aside from World Cup and Confederations hosts Brazil they are the only side competing here who have already booked their tickets for next summer’s jamboree.

RIO DE JANEIRO: Youths clashed with police in central Rio Monday as more than 200,000 people rallied in major Brazilian cities to protest the billions of dollars spent on the Confederations Cup and higher public transport costs.
The nationwide demonstrations, the biggest in 20 years, were relatively peaceful. They tapped widespread resentment over the huge costs of hosting the Confederations and next year’s World Cup while this emerging country is
hobbled by deep social inequality between rich poor and a creaking infrastructure. Acts of vandalism were reported in Rio and Porto Alegre while a 18-year-old youth was reported in stable condition in a Belo Horizonte
hospital after falling from an overpass during the protest. Police used tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets to disperse small groups of masked youths engaging in acts of vandalism near Rio’s state legislative assembly. Some of the rowdy young people broke into the building and television showed a small fire. Five policemen were reported hurt and a vehicle was set on fire. Elsewhere in Rio, a host city for the Confederations Cup, police said around 100,000 marched, notably down the central Rio Branco avenue. In Brasilia, more than 200 youths briefly occupied the roof of the National Congress. But after negotiations with police, the boisterous crowd agreed to leave, chanting and waving placards as security forces ringed the building. Some of the protesters called for the resignation of President Dilma Rousseff. Later, an estimated 5,000 youths formed a human chain around the Congress building. AFP
In going down 3-0 to the Brazilians in the opening match, Alberto Zaccheroni’s Japanese showed the effects of a long, yet successful, qualifying World Cup campaign they only arrived 72 hours after seeing off Iraq in the Gulf. They also showed - AS Zaccheroni tacitly admitted that they are at this stage a work in progress with 12 months to plan next year’s assault. “What we must not do is repeat the mistakes of the Brazil game,” said midfielder Yasuhito Endo. “But don’t judge us on that game.” Defender Yuto Nagatomo, who plays for Serie A side Inter Milan, said he and his teammates would have to get to grips with Mario Balotelli, who proved a handful for Mexico and who scored the winner in that game to see the Italians join Brazil on three points.
