Sarpanch turns gangster Once a panchayat member of the BJP, A Sadanand turned to a more lucrative profession, theft, after he was defeated in the last elections. Mohd SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The police team of Shamshabad has nabbed a gang of notorious thieves who had allegedly been involved in dozens of theft cases in the past few months at different places on the City outskirts. Police said one A Sadanand, AROUND THE

a former gram panchayat member of Shamshabad mandal, was the gang leader. Police have struck it rich by raiding many of their residences after the arrest. The raids yielded 30 gas cylinders, gold and silver ornaments, gadgets, and two
gunny bags of ganja. While the police got hold of the gang leader, the gang members escaped, Shamshabad police official R Jayram said The 39-year-old gang leader is said to be an active leader of the BJP and earlier he was elected as a gram panchayat member under the banner of the
same party. He used to be an influential personality in those times but in the last elections, he was defeated by the Congress candidate and since then, he had gone awry. In 2012, he selected five youths from the area and formed a gang of thieves to solve his financial problems.
They began plundering nearby areas. They targeted restaurants, closed homes, small hotels and shops, police said. The booty used to be disposed of in the ‘chor bazaar’. The police received nearly two dozen complaints against them in the past few months. Following this, the police had formed a decoy and the gang leader Sadanand was caught red-handed while he was trying to steal goods from a hotel near the bus stand. He confessed his crime in front of the policemen and said that when he lost his political career, his power has gone and he was vexed with life. Hence, he formed a gang for committing theft and he selected youths from his village. His five associates managed to escape, Jayram said.

25-year battle for a health card
NEW DELHI: A retired Delhi Police employee has won a 25year-old battle for a health card that gives him access to a nursing home. Ved Prakash Juneja’s long fight for his right ended with the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission reversing a subordinate consumer commission’s decision against him and giving the central government till August 31 to provide him the card.
The apex consumer commission took note of the plea of Juneja, who retired in 1988, that the Central Government Health SchAROUND THE

eme authorities should treat him as a consumer under the law. “The state consumer commission gravely erred in ignoring the settled law which recog-
nises a pensioner and beneficiary of the CGHS as a consumer under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986,” said Juneja’s plea. Juneja’s plea alleging bias against him as compared to other employees was also taken on record. “We may also note that in spite of repeated representations the (CGHS officials) have miserably failed to give any explanation regarding issuing
different CGHS I-Cards in two other cases of retired employees referred to by Juneja,” said the national commission's presiding member, Suresh Chandra. Holding the CGHS guilty of deficiency in service, Chandra said: “We direct the CGHS director... to issue pensioner's Icard with nursing home facilities to Juneja...subject to the petitioner making payment of lump sum amount of contribution to the CGHS.” IANS

HYDERABAD: A while ago a group of 200 aggrieved Muslim women approached the Women’s Commission with a host of problems which the community has failed to solve. Among them were the feelings of high insecurity among wives who find polygamy proving to be a Damocles’ sword for them. Domestic violence, love affairs, early marriage and dowry harassments are rendering hundreds of women hapless and divorced. The women pleaded with the Commission to step in and help them to curb the males from causing such misery. Explaining the anguish of the Muslim women, Dr Sunitha Krishnan, a member of the commission, told Postnoon that lack of education and employment among Muslim women were blocking their liberation and progress. Early or teen marriages is the root cause of the problem the women faced, she observed. As early marriage results in motherhood, studying and work-

Often, parents go along with the male view that men have total control over women, she said. Many of the issues the Muslim women are facing are out of the purview of the Commission. However, it is making its own efforts to bring in awareness about the rights of women. “A very large number of family disputes take place in the

The most tragic thing about it is that these girls are often afflicted with venereal diseases bequeathed by Arabs. They silently suffer after their lives are spoiled at an early age. Though police have tightened the noose against these criminals the incidents are still prevalent. Lure of lucre is leading to such crimes, women rallyists told the Commission.
PESHAWAR: A Pakistani power company is appealing to its customers' religious consciences in a desperate bid to get them to stop stealing electricity — a major hurdle in efforts to stem crippling blackouts. The Peshawar Electric
Supply Company (PESCO) has taken out front page adverts in three major newspapers in the country's northwest during the Islamic holy month of Ramzan, reminding readers that stealing electricity is a sin. "Do your fasting, pay zakat
(charitable donations) and serve your parents, but do these things by the light of legal electricity," the ad says. "Clerics have ruled that doing good deeds by the light of stolen electricity is against sharia, so let us stop using stolen electricity and beautify our day of judgement." Across Pakistan, from cities to villages and from slums to posh neighbourhoods, people steal electricity every day, usually by means of a metal hook known as a "kunda" connecting the house directly to power lines in the street, bypassing the meter. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has ordered a crackdown on electricity thieves, but they often work with the connivance of the power company staff and few people are ever prosecuted — hence PESCO's appeal to a

higher authority. Pakistan's power sector has been crippled by years of corruption and underinvestment, leaving people to struggle through blackouts of up to 20 hours a day in the blistering heat of summer. Given the irregular service, many Pakistanis do not see why they should pay. Amjad Ali, a welder living in a slum area of Karachi, says he cannot afford a regular connection but wouldn't pay for one even if he could. "If I get a connection, half of my monthly income would go in electric bills. I am not a fool to pay for their corruption and inefficiencies," he rued. AFP

Realty-bug bites villages Would-be sarpanchs are selling their lands to ‘buy’ voters. The trend can be seen in villages surrounding the GHMC where realty companies are buying up land cheaply to make a killing in the future. Md INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: In a dangerous new trend, the panchayat polls have turned out to be manna from heaven for realty sharks. Realty agents from big firms and builders interested in land banks are buying up lands surrounding the GHMC and elsewhere from serious candidates who hope to get elected as sarpanchs. Taking advantage of the polls, scores of builders and representatives of multi-national real estate firms have got into the action with pots of money. It is said hopeful sarpanchs do not have liquid cash to wean away voters and therefore are selling land. Incidentally, many sarpanchs are up for sale among political par-
ties so they hope to reap the benefits after the polls. The trend is visible in village panchayats adjacent to the GHMC more than other places. Some of these villages are Maal and Medipally of Yacharam Mandal in
Ranga Reddy district, Injaapur of Hayathnagar Mandal, Keesara, Rampalli, Cheeryala and scores of villages of Ibrahimpatnam, mandals of the same district and many villages of Vikarabad and Chevella divisions. Ibrahim-
patnam has already developed into a big hub for realty sector. At least one-third of over 600 villages are affected in this manner. Speaking to Postnoon, N Jagadish, a real estate agent, said that the local body polls had increased his clientele. He also added that it is also helping him in striking lucrative deals for his clients. “Most of the aspirants who are contesting in these polls belong to middle-class and upper middle-class families. They don’t have any other resource but to sell their land in order to meet the expenses. We are just trying to cash in on the very need of these aspirants,” he said. A contesting candidate affected Injaapur village said that he had to sell his land to contest in the polls. The aspirant further

WARD MEMBERS TOO GET INTO THE GAME While the sarpanch candidates are spending money like water, how can be their colleagues from wards stay behind? In many of the villages of Ranga Reddy district, the contesting candidates of various wards are shelling out money as well.

Pope Francis heads to Brazil More than one million people are expected to arrive in Brazil to greet the Pope on World Youth Day. RIO DE JANEIRO: Bringing his message of a “poor Church for the poor,” Pope Francis heads to Brazil Monday to find a country facing a shrinking Catholic flock and anger over government waste. Pilgrims from around the world began to gather in Rio de Janeiro for the World Youth Day, arriving by bus from neighbouring nations or landing by plane from across the ocean to greet the first pope from Latin America. More than one million people are expected for the festivities. “We have a Jesuit pope who is eternally simple, hum-
ble, who is revolutionising the Catholic Church,” said Antonio Prada, a 27-year-old Venezuelan. “His message is that we should be like Christ, that he’s the example to follow,” Prada said. Speaking from the Vatican on Sunday, Pope Francis said: “Everybody who is going to Rio wants to hear Jesus. Despite the past protests, which were sometimes marred by violence, the pope is ditching his armoured “Popemobile” for an open-top jeep to have direct contact with the people. Authorities are deploying 30,000 troops and police. During his week-long visit, Francis will see the faces of Brazil’s success and struggles, starting with a meeting Monday with President Dilma Rousseff and followed by a visit to one of Rio’s sprawling favelas, or slums, on Thursday. There’s also the poetic Lakme ad featuring a young schoolboy crushing on Yana Gupta’s gorgeous skin in a subtle endorsement of Lakme Peach Milk Lotion, some years ago. The biggest of all was the 1995 ad on Tuff Shoes. It was she who, through Ambience (an ad agency), gave the world the controversial Madhu Sapre-Milind Soman-cobrain-the-middle Tuffs shoes ad. Apart from making a name in the brand and advertising industry she has been part of the jury for Cannes Lions. Needless to say, Elsie Nanji’s creative side is a story waiting to be told. In US, television injuries on the rise
WASHINGTON: Television sets injure one child every 30 minutes in America, and the rate of emergency room visits is increasing with the popularity of flatscreen TVs, a study said Monday. Just over half (52 per cent) of all TV injuries for those under 18 from 1990 to 2011 were due to the equipment falling and hitting the patient, said the study in the journal Pediatrics. The number of falling TV injuries was 5,455 in 1990, but that more than doubled to 12,300 in 2011, the study said. The next most common category
AROUND THE
WORLD
was the patient striking a TV (38 per cent), but those injuries dropped 68 per cent over the 22-year study period. Most injuries were not serious, and only 2.6 per cent required hospital admission. A total of 380,885 paediatric patients were treated in emergency rooms over the period studied, for an average of more than 17,000 per year. Television sets are ubiquitous in American homes — 99 per cent of households own at least one television, and 55 per cent have three or more, said the study. The number of US households with multiple TVs has more than doubled since 1990, but researchers say this is not the sole reason for the increase in injuries. “We speculate that changes in the location of TV placement in the home may be responsible,” said the study. There were three times as many injuries from a television falling from an armoire or dresser over the last two decades, it said. "Older TVs may be relegated to less safe locations in the home, such as on dressers or other unsuitable furniture," said the study. Meanwhile, the rising popularity of flat screen TVs, which are predisposed to tipping forward because they carry their weight toward the screen, may be another key factor, the researchers said. AFP
What was it like being on the jury of so many international award juries, like Cannes? Wonderful. Made some of my best friends! What is your opinion about the Indian advertising industry? Thanks to them, I am who I am today, although today views are a bit insular, they should look beyond advertising and enjoy so much that’s out there. Are Indian designers getting their fair share of the limelight? Not at all, design is the foundation of brand building and so many people including clients are not aware of this! What is your stand on the portrayal of women in the ad and design industry?
I see no difference, only that women have a big role to play in raising kids, and that’s why so many opt out. For you is it the case of a woman in a man's world? Do you have to work doubly hard to prove yourself? Not at all, it was an advantage in my world. In today's age what must a brand do when projecting itself to the world? Depends on the brand, its current positioning and the environment we live in today. There are no general answers that will enlighten everyone, if there were, everyone would be a successful communicator! Elsie is part of the jury for Kyoorius Awards which is slated to be held on August 29. She will be picking the awardees based on a set of fixed criterion and of course, their expertise.

Camel slaughter halted Camels stream into the City during the month of Ramzan only to be slaughtered out in the open. Activists protest this practice. No animal can be slaughtered anywhere but in GHMCapproved slaughter houses. These camels were slaughtered in open grounds . Camels are notified animals so it is illegal to slaughter them.
AMY ROSE THOMAS amyrose.t@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Come Ramzan, hundreds of camels from across the country make their death march to Hyderabad, covering close to 1,600 km on foot only to be slaughtered in broad daylight. Camel meat is an irreplaceable dish for many Muslim households during the holy month and camels are sold at exorbitant prices this time of the year. Not so common in south India, these animals are brought in predominantly from AROUND THE
CITY
Rajasthan and are sold at Narisingi market located near Golconda fort on the outskirts of the City. This year, there was a welcome change when around 140 camels brought in to the City were rescued by the Bharatiya Prani Mitra Sangh (BPMS) with the support of Cyberabad police and sent back to their home towns in the presence of animal activists. It was based on a com-
plaint by BPMS general secretary Mahesh Agarwal with the Cyberabad police commissioner CV Anand that the action was taken. “Slaughtering of camels must be stopped on three grounds. Firstly, most of these animals are not licensed and they do not have any papers. Secondly, no animal can be slaughtered anywhere but in GHMC-approved slaughter
houses. These camels were slaughtered in open grounds at Narsingi. And thirdly, camels are notified animals so it is illegal to slaughter them. Slaughtering of camels is against the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. However, we have not been able to seize any of these animals yet and we are working towards it. As of now, these camels have been moved from district to dis-
trict,” Vasanthi Vadi, secretary of People for Animals. It was activist Srinivas Rao who had taken the pictures and videos of the slaughter and produced them as proof for the cops. “These traders are originally from Maharashtra who travel to Rajasthan and bring in these animals by foot to the City. There are 300 camels that are brought to the City each year. We have been trying to bring a stop to this slaughter for the past many years. Last year, GHMC had booked cases against these traders for the illegal slaughter,” Srinivas says. Hopefully, with this ban, the illegal practice of selling camels for slaughter won’t continue in the City.
Turning sweat into water LONDON: Drinking another person’s sweat may sound obnoxious, but a machine that takes sweat-laden clothes and turns the moisture into drinking water has been launched in Sweden. The device spins and heats the material to remove the sweat and then passes the vapour through a special membrane designed to only let water molecules get through, BBC reported. Since its launch, its creators said more than 1,000 people have “drunk other’s sweat” in Gothenburg city. The experts said the liquid was “cleaner” than local tap water. The device was built for the Unicef to promote a campaign AROUND THE

highlighting the fact that 780 million people in the world lack access to clean water. The machine was designed and built by engineer Andreas Hammar. He said the critical part of the sweat machine was a water purification component developed by the HVR company in collaboration with Sweden’s Royal Institute of Technology. “It uses a technique called membrane distillation,” he told BBC. “We use a substance that only lets steam through but keeps bacteria, salts, clothing fibres and other substances out.” “They have something similar on the International Space Station to treat astronaut’s urine - but our machine was cheaper to build. “The amount of water it produces depends on how sweaty the person is — but one person’s T-shirt typically produces 10 ml, roughly a mouthful,” he said. Mattias Ronge, chief executive of advertising agency Deportivo — which organised the event — said the machine helped raise awareness for Unicef, but in reality had its limitations. IANS

KABUL: Twenty-two Taliban militants have surrendered in the western Afghan province of Herat, the provincial governor said. “Two groups of Taliban consisting of 22 people renounced violence and joined the government-backed peace and reconciliation process in Herat on Sunday afternoon,” Seyyed Fazlullah Wahhidi told Xinhua.
CAIRO: As many as 17 soldiers were killed and 35 others injured in a bus-truck collision in Egypt’s Beheira governorate, north of Cairo, state media reported. The accident took place on the Wadi elNatroun-Alamein highway. The injured were airlifted by helicopter to an army hospital in Cairo, an official said.
BAMAKO: Tuareg rebels held talks Sunday with Mali’s interim president, discussing possibilities for peace and reconciliation, but tensions remained high as a homemade bomb was found in flashpoint city Kidal a week from a crucial presidential vote. A Tuareg rebel leader was also arrested over the abduction of six officials in northern Mali.
BRUSSELS: EU foreign ministers decide Monday whether to blacklist the military wing of Lebanon’s Hezbollah group, with an eye also on the conflict in Syria and the possible resumption of stalled IsraelPalestinian talks. Hezbollah is close to Iran, and its recent intervention in Syria has dismayed Western powers.
TEHRAN: Iran’s Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad Hosseini has termed as “unacceptable” a raid by Egyptian security forces at the office of Iranian satellite TV channel Al Alam in Cairo, a media report said. Egyptian security forces Saturday raided the office, detained its director and confiscated the equipment.

Biden visit to fire up India-US ties NEW DELHI: US Vice President Joe Biden was due in India Monday at the start of a four-day visit designed to revive momentum in flagging diplomatic ties and fire up bilateral trade. Biden will meet senior leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi. The announcement of Biden’s visit was made during a trip to India last month by Secretary of State John Kerry, who sought to assuage Indian fears about the aftermath of next year’s withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan. India, which has spent more than two billion dollars of aid in Afghanistan, fears any return of the Taliban, hardline Islamists who were strong allies of Pakistan before being toppled in 2001.

In his meeting with Indian leaders, Biden is expected to reiterate that the US will not back any peace process involving the Taliban unless they renounce violence. Biden will fly on Wednesday to Mumbai where he is expected
to hold a roundtable with business leaders and press for stronger intellectual property protection. While bilateral trade has grown in recent years, there is still widespread frustration among US business leaders over what they see as unfair trading practices. Among the points of contention is India’s championing of generic drugs — which advocates say save lives in poor nations — despite protests from Western drug firms. India in turn has been alarmed by proposals in the US Congress to curb visas for high-tech workers. AFP

The deceased was a labourer Bharat from Barabanki. Seers Anil Das, Chela Balram Das and a passerby were wounded in the firing. Both sides have lodged complaints and the incident is being investigated, police said. The two groups fired at each other over a dispute on blocking the passage to a building. SYDNEY: Australia’s new policy of resettling refugees in Papua New Guinea was already having a deterrent effect on boatpeople, Immigration Minister Tony Burke said Monday as angry protesters condemned the plan. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, facing an election this year, announced on Friday that all asylum-seekers who arrive by boat will be sent to povertystricken PNG even if found to be genuine refugees under a deal signed with its Pacific neighbour. Burke said indications were the plan was already having the desired impact of stopping the arrival of unauthorised boats, many of which have sunk en route in recent years, drowning hundreds of men, women and children. Protesters targeted Rudd in Sydney over the policy which has also caused some concern within his centre-left Labor Party on Monday. Rudd’s plan to stop the boats comes as more than 15,600 asylum-seekers have arrived by sea this year, straining immigration facilities and border protection authorities. AFP

47 dead in twin China quakes ‘More than 21,000 buildings were severely damaged and more than 1,200 have collapsed,’ said an official at the earthquake bureau in Gansu province. BEIJING: At least 47 people were killed and almost 300 injured when two shallow earthquakes struck northwest China early Monday, an official told AFP, as rescuers battled to reach survivors in the remote, mountainous area. “More than 21,000 buildings were severely damaged and more than 1,200 have collapsed," said the official at the earthquake bureau in Gansu province, where the 5.9 and 5.6 magnitude tremors struck. The official said 296 people had been severely injured, adding that there have been 371 aftershocks. The US Geological Survey said the initial 5.9 magnitude quake hit at 7.45 am (2345 GMT Sunday), with its epicentre 151 kilometres (94 miles) west of Beidao in Gansu province at a depth of just 9.8 kilometres. A second 5.6 magnitude tremor hit the same region at 9:12 am and was 10.1 kilometres deep, USGS said. A resident of Min county told AFP he was at work at a medicine production plant when the tremor struck and he saw tower blocks shake “ferociously". “I was in the workshop. I felt violent shaking and so I ran to the yard of the plant immediately," said the man, surnamed Ma. “Our factory is only one floor. affected townships in the area. While Gansu is one of China’s more sparsely populated provinces, Dingxi city, one of the worst affected areas, has a population of about 2.7 million. A report on the 163.com Internet news portal said 500 troops, including 120 specialised rescuers were on their way to the disaster zone. Pictures broadcast on state television showed rural villages with rubble-strewn streets. A total of 380 buildings col-
lapsed and thousands were damaged in Zhang county, according to an online post by the Dingxi local government. The quake was felt in the provincial capital Lanzhou and as far away as Xian, the capital of the neighbouring province of Shaanxi, the official Xinhua news agency said. Beijing’s own China Earthquake Networks Centre put the magnitude of the larger quake at 6.6, Xinhua reported. The USGS rated it at seven on its “shakemap", with shaking per-
ceived to be “very strong” and the potential to cause “moderate” damage. Weather reports also said rain was expected in the area, which could hamper rescue efforts in the mountainous region. Disaster relief agencies have sent 500 tents and 2,000 quilts to the quake-hit region, Xinhua said. Much of western China is prone to earthquakes. A magnitude 6.6 earthquake in neighbouring Sichuan province killed about 200 people earlier this year, five years after almost 90,000 people were killed in a huge tremor in the same province.

PAJU: Just south of the minefields, fences and watchposts of the world’s last Cold War frontier, a monk pours rice wine on the grave of an unknown North Korean soldier killed 60 years ago. The monk, 57 year-old Mukgai, is alone in tending to the spirits of “enemy” combatants — North Korean and Chinese troops — who died in the slaughter of the 1950-53 Korean War and whose remains lie buried in an isolated South Korean cemetery. Every day, he performs the same Buddhist ritual, chanting
sutras, banging a drum and pouring the wine in an effort, he says, to soothe the souls of young men permanently exiled in death. Some 735 North Koreans and 369 Chinese are buried in the cemetery — the only one of its kind in South Korea — located a short walk from the Imjin River that forms part of the border separating the two Koreas. Mukgai decided to devote himself to tending the graveyard after what he describes as a vivid and disturbing supernatural encounter one night in October

making a huge commotion, some of them speaking in Chinese," he recalled. They were wearing worn-out or bloodied military uniforms, some of them complaining they
were cold and hungry, begging for help and crying that they missed their homes, the monk told AFP. Casualty figures from the Korean War remain disputed, but around 200,000 North Korean troops are believed to have been killed. China entered the war in October 1950 and lost around 135,000 soldiers in the fighting. July 27 will mark the 60th anniversary of the armistice that ended the conflict but left both sides still technically at war because it was never formalised by a peace treaty.

Deaths rock trust in India’s school meals scheme Tens of thousands of children were reported to be refusing to eat their lunches in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy.
AMMU KANNAMPILLY Agence France-Presse NEW DELHI: The fatal poisoning of 23 Indian children has rocked trust in the world’s largest free school meals scheme, but experts say some pupils have no choice but to eat the lunches. The nationwide scheme feeds some 120 million youngsters every day and is seen as key to persuading parents who are battling poverty to send their children to school rather than condemn them to illiteracy and malnutrition. But since dozens of pupils fell ill last Tuesday at a primary school in the eastern state of Bihar, reports have emerged of other mass hospitalisations and even maggots being found in some meals. Tens of thousands of children were reported to be refusing to eat their lunches in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy. While there has been widespread revulsion over the revelations, experts say the scheme is nevertheless a crucial weapon in the war against malnutrition and also serves to undercut caste prejudice. Forensic tests have shown that the oil used to cook the lunch in Bihar contained a “highly toxic” form of insecticide, underlining fears that monitoring of food quality is inadequate.

The nationwide scheme feeds some 120 million youngsters every day and is seen as key to persuading parents who are battling poverty to send their children to school rather than condemn them to illiteracy and malnutrition.
The children died after eating lentils, potatoes and rice cooked with oil containing an agricultural insecticide that was five times the strength sold in the market place, according to the tests. “I can accept accidents can happen anywhere,” activist Dipa Sinha of the Right to Food Campaign told AFP. “But the scale of this incident and the carelessness, the sheer callousness of the response, the delay in treating the children, is shocking.” The tragedy may have caused widespread shock but it is hardly an isolated incident. Twenty children were admitted to hospital Friday after they ate lunch at school in the state of Goa, although they were all later released. Last year more than 130 students needed hospital treatment in the western city of Pune

after eating a school lunch, the Times of India reported. A probe revealed that the food was contaminated with E. coli bacteria. But Alex George, of ActionAid India’s Child Rights Hub, told AFP poor families had little choice but to allow their children to take part in the scheme. “For them, this midday meal is often the only wholesome meal they may get in a day.” A government survey last year found that 42 percent of Indian children under the age of five were underweight. Several parents who lost children in the Bihar tragedy said they had relied on the school to serve their kids their one square meal of the day. “We have no food at home and it was only to ensure that my children got at least some food that I sent them to the school,” Sanjudevi Mahatoshe, a mother who lost three children in the tragedy, told AFP. For all its faults, advocates of the programme say the scheme does bring major benefits, not least by erasing social boundaries as children of different castes eat together. “It has had a huge impact — not just on enrollment, but also on retention rates, Delhi-based economist Reetika Khera told AFP. “Poorer kids tend to spend more years in school, thanks to the midday meal.” Tamil Nadu was the first Indian state to adopt a school feeding programme in 1982. Other local governments gradually followed and in 2001, India’s Supreme Court ordered all states to provide free lunches to students in state-run primary schools. A 2010 government planning commission report on the scheme found the majority of the schools sampled lacked fully functional kitchens, enough utensils and adequate storage space.

Blogger ‘weak’ from hunger strike
Nguyen Van Hai, jailed for 12 years for anti-state propaganda, was protesting the way he was treated in jail. HANOI: A well-known Vietnamese blogger, jailed for 12 years for anti-state propaganda, is “very weak” after a monthlong hunger strike protesting at his treatment in prison, his family said on Monday. AROUND THE

Nguyen Van Hai — a founding member of the banned “Free Journalists Club” who is better known by his alias Dieu Cay — has not eaten for 30 days, according to his ex-wife Duong Thi Tan. “He is very weak... He spoke
softly and couldn’t sit up unaided,” she told AFP, following a visit to the prison by the couple’s son on Saturday. She said Dieu Cay went on hunger strike to protest against his treatment in a prison in central Nghe An province, adding that her son had been allowed to talk to his father for five minutes “before they dragged him away”. “He was kept in solitary confinement for three months when he did not violate any rule,” she said, accusing the jail of having “extremely bad” conditions. “He said he would continue the hunger strike if authorities do not respond to his com-
plaint,” Tan told AFP. The family were “very worried” that the new hunger strike would endanger his health.
Dieu Cay, whose case has been raised by US President Barack Obama, was sentenced in September 2012 along with two other bloggers who received jail terms of 10 years and four years. The blogger has been on hunger strike once before for 28 days, in late 2011, also to protest his treatment in jail. He ended up in hospital in Ho Chi Minh City before agreeing to end his fast. Dozens of peaceful political activists have been jailed since Vietnam began a new crackdown on dissent in late 2009. Vietnam bans private media and all newspapers and television channels are state-run.
Lawyers, bloggers and activists are regularly subject to arbitrary arrest and detention, according to rights groups. So far in 2013, at least 46 activists have been convicted of anti-state activity and sentenced to often lengthy jail terms under what rights groups say are vaguely defined articles of the penal code. In late June, high-profile dissident Cu Huy Ha Vu, serving a seven-year sentence for spreading anti-state propaganda, ended a three-week hunger strike to protest against his treatment in prison. AFP

Lack of connectivity in terms of roads, and high travel time are limiting the developers from looking at the suburbs to invest. PRUDHVI RAJU K prudhvi.k@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Malls are turning out as entertainment hubs for urban Indians. They are not just centres for shopping but also offer varied experiences from gaming to savouring multiple cuisines. Consumer interest to experience variety at one place, along with the growth of organised retail, is driving the mall culture in the Country. However, the dwindling rupee value, low GDP growth, high inflation, decreasing purchasing of power of consumers is hindering this growth phase to an extent. Explaining the scenario, Kishore Bhatija, Inorbit Malls Managing Director and CEO, said, “From buying groceries to clothes, there is certain amount of purchase one has to do on regular basis despite the fall in GDP. But, consumer may think twice before taking decision of going for expensive clothing. For instance, if some one is buying `4,000-jeans, he may opt for `1,000-jeans in these tough times. We also offer wide variety of products at different price points to attract customers and for sustainable growth.” “But one should not ignore that country is growing. After seeing 8 per cent growth in GDP for few years, the 5 per cent may not be appealing. The size of the market has become large with the earlier growth,” he adds. When asked how retailer or a mall developer should sail through this situation, he said, “Unlike in west, the system here is not focused on the productivity. Fortunately, the retail growth has covered the inefficiencies that we had in earlier years. But, the fall in growth now makes us to feel the pinch of these inefficiencies. Utilisation of resources either it is human, space or

need to focus on marketing. The sales should aim to increase the revenues beyond the inflation levels for their sustenance. “The efficiencies should also increase from mall developer’s standpoint. We are cautious in buying expensive lands that doesn’t make rentals affordable to the retailers. However, the lack of connectivity in terms of roads, high travel time is limiting the developers from looking at the suburbs at this point of time. In the west, the retail was developed in the suburbs to decrease the costs. “Better infrastructure in the City and each family owning a four-wheeler drove the growth of this mall culture in the suburbs. unni Muslim extremists and Shiite Zaidi rebels in Yemen are waging a battle for the control of mosques, in a spillover of the sectarian face-off rattling the Middle East. The showdown was previously confined to the northern province of Saada, stronghold of Zaidi Ansarullah rebels who have since last year frequently clashed with supporters of the Sunni Islamist party Al-Islah. Sanaa accuses Ansarullah of being backed by Shiite-majority Iran. With the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan on July 10, frictions between the two sides have sharpened in the capital. Sunni Salafists have been trying to seize control of a mosque led by a Zaidi imam in Sanaa, in response to a similar move by Ansarullah supporters against another mosque led by a Sunni cleric in the capital. This has sparked clashes in which knives were used and also a bomb attack that wounded five people last week, according to witnesses and police. And on Thursday, gunmen on a motorbike shot dead two Shiites and wounded four others who were staging a sit-in protest in the capital. In a bid to ease tensions, the authorities have secured a commitment from both sides “not to use force to impose their own rites in mosques," according to Hmoud Obad, the minister of Waqf. “People have lived and prayed together for centuries, but the political polarisation taking place threatens to divide them," he said. The rebels, who belong to the Zaidi sect of Shiite Islam, are mainly concentrated in the north and make up 25 per cent of Yemen’s Sunni-majority population estimated at 25 million. AFP

or months, US Secretary of State John Kerry has cut a rather lonely figure in Washington, openly mocked for his single-minded pursuit of what many believe is a fool’s errand — a West Asia peace deal. The kindest critics have given him an “A” for effort, while remaining skeptical that he can achieve something that has eluded American presidents for decades. Others have derided his efforts as a lost cause from the start, and one pundit even cruelly dubbed him “the lone ranger." So Kerry can be forgiven the smile of satisfaction that crossed his face on the way home from Amman late Friday after announcing a tentative deal for Israelis and Palestinians to resume talks, perhaps as soon as this week. Staff applauded as he bounded onto his plane, grabbed a bottle of beer, and kicked back for the first time after four days of nail-biting drama, which almost saw his hopes for a resumption of talks slip away. After months of dogged
diplomacy and six intensive trips to the region, he has achieved what his predecessor Hillary Clinton never even tried to do — convincing the two sides to agree to return to the negotiating table. And while he knows the hard work is just beginning and he risks very public and humiliating failure given how far apart the two sides are, he can bask briefly in his first success as America’s top diplomat. As the public face of US foreign policy, it’s a welcome bright spot for an administration under fire abroad for refusing to do more to end the Syrian conflict and seen as preoccupied with domestic concerns. And while the skeptics are already warning of doom and gloom, the climate this time around might be more nurturing for some kind of a breakthrough. On the personal front, Kerry is reveling in his new job, apparently having foregone any further presidential ambitions, which might have kept him from wading into one of the world’s most intractable conflicts. And it appears the White House has given him carte blanche in an area in which President Barack Obama doesn’t want to expend any more energy. Obama was badly bitten when his own much
vaunted 2010 foray into Middle East peace collapsed in a matter of weeks leading to the stalemate which — if all goes according to plan — Kerry has now unlocked. The regional landscape has also changed, with the Arab Spring triggering upheaval in many of Israel’s neighbors, raising fears in the Jewish state that hostile groups could end up seizing power. Analysts have long argued that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict remains the festering sore fuelling discontent in the Arab world, and that only a peace deal can guarantee Israel’s longterm security. Israel is also facing increasing international isolation over the Palestinians’ plight. At the UN in December, only nine nations voted against giving the Palestinians upgraded state-
hood, with 138 in favor. An EU ban on funding Jewish settlements, adopted last week as Kerry was in Amman, may also have helped push Israel back to the negotiations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was furious at the vote, which he told Kerry was “damaging efforts to restart the talks." But it may also have served as yet another warning that the current status quo is no longer sustainable. Just hours before Kerry announced the breakthrough at a hastily gathered press event at Queen Alia airport in Amman, he flew on Jordanian helicopters to the West Bank headquarters of Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in Ramallah. After shaking hands to seal the deal, Kerry and his staff and travelling press corps took off again just as dusk was falling.

P
oonam Pandey sets an example. Bad or good we shall know as we advance. There are several who are miffed with the way Poonam Pandey paved her way to name, fame and her first film deal — a complete nobody who gathered attention by vowing to strip if Team India won the World Cup, which she did not keep good despite the team’s winning. One is not sure if many were disappointed that she did not do it then, but she compensated by whetting the hopes of those who were eagerly awaiting for the spectacle by posting online semi-nude pictures of hers, in bikinis, tubs bubbling with foam and in other various titillating, tantalising poses. When India won the Cup, she dithered on going full monty, saying she needed the

permission of the BCCI. On what scientific evidence she based her reasons, only god knows, for she pressed, while making her case in her letter to the BCCI, that her tribute in the buff would be “therapeutic” for the boys, worn out by the venture that brought glory to nation. She may have sensed some of them needed therapy: till that last six that sealed the cup, captain Dhoni was being panned for some of his decisions; comeback hero Yuvraj Singh, and of course the great Sachin Tendulkar who had to endure a 22-year-long wait for that Cup. Only that no one evinced interest. Yet very “commendable” on her part to come up with offer of such a unique tribute. But working her way to a movie deal by her willingness to show skin is not.

Books aside, if you asked a college freshman today who the Greatest Generation is, they might respond by pointing in a mirror. Young people's unprecedented level of self-infatuation was revealed in a new analysis of the American Freshman Survey, which has been asking students to rate themselves compared to their peers since 1966. Roughly 9 million young people have taken the survey over the last 47 years. Psychologist Jean Twenge and her colleagues compiled the data and found that over the last four decades there's been a dramatic rise in the number of students who describe themselves as being 'above average' in the areas of academic ability, drive to achieve, mathematical ability, and self-confidence.

UNDERSTANDING THE EAR: PART I
19
Hear that? The human ear is a delicate organ which aids not only in hearing but also balance. Its intricate twists and turns make it a fascinating study.
How we hear
L
ike all sense organs, the ears are responsible for recognising sound, but it is the brain that hears. Vertebrates have a pair of ears placed somewhat symmetrically on opposite sides of the head. This arrangement aids in the ability to localise sound sources. The ear changes sound pressure waves from the outside world into a signal of nerve impulses sent to the brain. Sound waves are perceived by the brain
Balancing it out through the firing of nerve cells in the auditory portion of the central nervous system. The outer part of the ear collects sound. That sound pressure is amplified through the middle portion of the ear and, in land animals, passed from the medium of air into a liquid medium. The change from air to liquid occurs because air surrounds the head and is contained in the ear canal and middle ear, but not in the inner ear.
ANEWS PP-LYBRIEFS YOURSELF
I
t's not that the ears are solely responsible for balance. Our sense of balance depends on our visual, sensory and auditory systems, and if any of them are damaged, a person experiences a sense of dizziness. Information from the vestibular system of the inner ear is sent to the brain stem, cerebellum, and spinal cord. Potential balance abnormalities do not require conscious input from the cerebrum. Abnormal vestibular signals cause the body to try to compensate by making adjustments in posture of the trunk and limbs as well as making changes in eye movement to adjust sight input. Pressure acclimatisation is also a function of the ear. The eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx and helps equalise pressure inside your middle ear to atmospheric pressure on the outside. It also allows mucous build-up to drain into the nasopharynx.

No two people have the same outer ear shape, making them as unique as fingerprints. The three smallest bones in the body, malleus, stapes, and incus, are found in the ear. Sounds above 120-130dB can be painful to the human ear. Damage to hearing occurs when sound is louder than 90dB. The cochlea is encased in the petrous portion of the temporal bone, which is the hardest bone in the body. Only 1/3 of the people that can twitch their ears can twitch only one at a time. Sound can also be conducted to the inner ear through your

skull and its contents. Usually you hear your own voice partly through your head like this and partly through the air, which is why your voice may sound strange to you on a tape recording in which all the sound will have travelled through the air. Too much fluid putting pressure on your eardrums causes earaches. They are often a result of infection, allergies, or a virus. You know that feeling of dizziness after you have been spinning around? Well, the fluid in you ears spun as well. That makes the cilia move in all different directions and confused your brain.

Brucellosis is an illness caused by infection with a type of bacteria (Brucella). Brucellosis may come on either suddenly or quite gradually. It can cause a continuous or intermittent fever, headache, weakness, drenching sweats, chills, joint pains, weight loss and generalised aches. The severity and duration of symptoms can vary greatly between people. Some or all symptoms may reappear after apparent recovery.
By 60 years of age, 60per cent of men and 40per cent of women will snore. But the sound of a snore can seem deafening. While snores average around 60 decibels, the noise level of normal speech, they can reach more than 80 decibels. Eighty decibels is as loud as the sound of a pneumatic drill breaking up concrete.
Fauchard was a signiďŹ cant French physician, credited as being the "father of modern dentistry". He is widely known for his book, Le chirurgien dentiste, "The Surgeon Dentist" 1728, where he described the basic oral anatomy and function, signs and symptoms of oral pathology, operative methods for removing decay and restoring teeth, orthodontics, replacement of missing teeth, and tooth transplantation.

he Human Rights Watch on Sunday blasted Kuwait over a 20-month jail sentence served on a female online activist for “offending the emir” and urged the Gulf state to end such prosecutions. The appeals court on Wednesday upheld the sentence on Sara al-Darees for making remarks on Twitter deemed insulting to the emir. The sentence “further erodes the right to free speech in Kuwait,” the New Yorkbased rights group said in a statement. “The Kuwait authorities over the past year have prose-
cuted dozens of people for peaceful political statements,” said Joe Stork, acting Middle East director at HRW. “The government should tolerate this kind of criticism, not persecute people who dare express it.” At least three youth activists are serving jail terms on similar charges and many others are still on trial, including former opposition lawmakers. “The government should drop charges against those accused or convicted of crimes solely for exercising their right to freedom of expression, and it should amend Kuwait's criminal code to remove the
crime of ‘offending the emir’,” Stork said. “Kuwait used to have a better reputation than most other Gulf states in respecting the right to free speech,” he added. “But with each case like this, the authorities are lowering themselves to the standards of the rest of the region.” According to the verdict, Darees now has to go to jail unless the Supreme Court agrees to grant her bail until it has reviewed her challenge to the ruling. Darees, a teacher, is the second Kuwaiti woman to be jailed on charges of insulting Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah on Twitter. AFP

the dedication because its theme is very close to Chennai Express. Composed, written and sung by Honey Singh, the song was choreographed by veteran choreographer Chinni Prakash. Actress Deepika Padukone, SRK's costar in Chennai Express is also a part of the special song.
"Deepika, on my request, happily agreed to be a part of the song because even she is a huge fan of Rajini sir. The song is fun, happy and completely Rajinikanth Style," said Shah Rukh. Chennai Express, an action comedy directed by Rohit Shetty, releases August 9.

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

TOUR DE FRANCE
VIVE LA FROOME!
Froome, whose mother Jane died in 2008 three weeks before he raced his maiden ‘Grande Boucle’, paid tribute as he stood atop the podium. JUSTIN DAVIS Agence France-Presse PARIS: Britain’s Chris Froome was crowned champion of the 100th edition of the Tour de France as Germany’s Marcel Kittel powered his way to his fourth win on the 21st and final stage on Sunday. Team Sky’s Froome, the winner of three stages in this edition, claimed his maiden yellow jersey with a winning margin of 4min 20sec on second-placed Colombian Nairo Quintana of Movistar.
Argos sprinter Kittel ended Cavendish’s hopes of a fifth consecutive win on the Champs Elysees when he outsprinted the sprinter. “I think it’s going to take a while to sink in," said a triumphant Froome, who succeeded teammate and compatriot Bradley Wiggins, absent this year, as the yellow jersey champion. “It really has been a special edition of the Tour de France this year. Every day I woke up knowing I faced a fresh challenge... and I have to thank all my teammates for helping me achieve this dream." Froome, whose mother Jane died in 2008 three weeks before he raced his maiden ‘Grande
Boucle', paid tribute as he stood atop the podium. “I’d like to dedicate this win to my late mother, without her encouragement to follow my dreams I would probably be at home watching this event on TV," he added. “It’s a great shame she never got to come see the Tour."
US MOTO GP
Marquez wins US GP The 20-year-old Spaniard, who won earlier this month in Germany. MONTEREY: Rookie Marc Marquez won the US Grand Prix on Sunday, extending his championship points lead and becoming the youngest rider in Moto GP history to win back-to-back series races. The 20-year-old Spaniard, who won earlier this month in Germany, captured his third victory of the season as he beat out German pole sitter Stefan Bradl at the Laguna Seca raceway. “I’m very happy because it’s great to go into the sum-
mer break with this result," Marquez said. “It’s a new circuit and I’ve got 25 points." Bradl claimed his first podium spot and nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi of Italy finished third. With the victory, the Repsol Honda Team rider becomes the first rookie to win at Laguna Seca. Marquez also won races in Texas and Germany, as he surpassed Freddie Spencer as the youngest to record consecutive victories.
Race debutant Quintana, who moved up to second place thanks to his maiden stage win at the summit finish of AnnecySemnoz on Saturday, secured the race’s white jersey for the best young rider and the best climber’s polka dot jersey. He was joined on the podium by Spaniard Joaquim
Rodriguez (Katusha), third at 5:04 and one place ahead of former two-time winner Alberto Contador of Spain, who slipped to fourth on Saturday’s penultimate stage. Slovakian Peter Sagan of Cannondale won the points competition’s green jersey for the second successive year with
a tally of 409 points and a 97point lead on former winner Mark Cavendish of Britain. Argos sprinter Kittel ended Cavendish’s hopes of a fifth consecutive win on the Champs Elysees when he outsprinted the Omega-Pharma sprinter and German Andre Greipel of Lotto in a thrilling dash for the line.

fifth and final game in St Lucia on Wednesday. “I am very pleased. We were looking to exploit the pitch but the rain came early," said Pakistan skipper Misbah- ul-Haq who was unbeaten on 53. “It was like a normal T20 game, Hafeez and I wanted to play normal shots. It was the case of not panicking. The team will gain from the momentum today." Marlon Samuels, with an undefeated 106, was the West Indies top scorer.

Chill Phil wins The Open The 43-year-old saved his best for last as he came down the back nine in 32, birdieing four of the last six holes, for a five-under 66.
ALLAN KELLY Agence France-Presse GULLANE: Phil Mickelson won the British Open for the first time at Muirfield on Sunday, one month after his heartbreak at the US Open where he was runnerup for a record sixth time. The 43-year-old lefty saved his best for last as he came down the brutal back nine at the famed links course east of Edinburgh in 32, birdieing four of the last six holes, for a five-under 66. That gave him a three under total of 281, three strokes clear of Henrik Stenson of Sweden, who had a closing 70. Third place was shared by English pair Lee Westwood (75) and Ian Poulter (67) as well as Australian Adam Scott (72) who birdied the 18th. Mickelson won in what was his 20th Open campaign and it was his fifth major title after the Masters of 2004, 2006 and 2010 and the PGA Championship of 2005. It came just one month after he had endured the agony of a record sixth runner-up finish at the US Open behind Justin Rose and vaults him up to second in the world rankings behind Tiger

Tiger looks to PGA Championship The world number one started Sunday’s final round of the British Open at Muirfield perfectly placed in a tie for second, just two shots behind leader Lee Westwood. GULLANE: For Tiger Woods, the long wait for a 15th major title win goes on and on, but he believes he could end his drought at next month’s PGA Championship. The world number one started Sunday’s final round of the British Open at Muirfield perfectly placed in a tie for second, just two shots behind leader Lee Westwood. He had looked confident and threatening during Saturday’s third round and there was no sign of the left elbow injury that dogged him at last month’s US Open. On Sunday he was looking to do something he had never done before — win a major championship while trailing going into the final round.
He never looked like getting that monkey off his back. Woods dropped a shot at the opening hole and by the time he reached the turn in 38, he had already slipped down the leaderboard. There was still time to turn the tide as players struggled to make birdies in the tough conditions, but bogeys at 10 and 11 virtually doomed his hopes as old rival Phil Mickelson sped past him to win his first Open. It was all to do with the speed of he greens, he said. “I had a hard time adjusting to the speeds. They were much slower today, much softer,” he said. “I really had a hard time and left myself a couple of long putts early on when it was really blow-
ing, and left them way short and didn’t make those putts. “I didn’t really play that poorly. I hit a couple of bad shots at 10, 11, that was about it and at 3. But other than that I really hit the ball well today. I just couldn’t ever get the pace of these things.” Woods has now gone 17 major tournaments without a win, his last coming at the 2008 Torrey Pines US Open — 18 months before his life was turned upside down by a sex scandal that wrecked his marriage and sullied his reputation. Woods though feels that he is in with a good chance at next month’s PGA Championship, which is being held at Oak Hill, Rochester, a course he knows well.

IT ASHES 2013
Clarke vows to laugh last
Ashes-holders England thrashed their arch-rivals by 347 runs at ‘the home of cricket’ on Sunday, with over a day left, to strengthen their grip on the urn. JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse LONDON: Michael Clarke vowed to have the last laugh on all those who mocked his suggestion Australia could still win the Ashes after a crushing defeat at Lord’s left them 2-0 down in the five-match series. Ashes-holders England thrashed their arch-rivals by 347 runs at ‘the home of cricket’ on Sunday, with over a day left, to strengthen their grip on the urn. Australia’s main problem, as it was in a far narrower 14-run reverse in the first Test at Trent Bridge, was a lack of runs from their specialist batsmen. Whereas England built competitive totals in both innings at Lord’s on the back of hundreds by Ian Bell (109) and man-of-thematch Joe Root (180), the highest individual Australia score was Usman Khawaja’s second innings 54. By then Australia had been left to chase a colossal 583 after being bowled out for just 128 first time around. Clarke, Australia’s best batsman and a proven world-class performer, made 51 on Sunday but that only took his average for the series to 25.50, with none of the tourists having made an individual hundred in the first two Tests. The last time any side came from 2-0 down to win the Ashes was in 1936/37 when Australia, inspired by Don Bradman, cricket’s greatest Test batsman, even-
tually won 3-2 on home soil. However, despite the weight of history against him, Clarke said: “I’m still confident we can win this series. “I know a lot of the crowd laughed when I said that, and rightly so with the position we are in right now, but all of our top order have made a fifty and we need someone who can go on and make a big hundred — as England have done.”

LONDON: Alastair Cook hailed Joe Root’s “character” as he did his best to keep a lid on expectations of a 5-0 Ashes rout after England’s crushing 347 run-win over Australia in the second Test at Lord’s. The Yorkshire opener’s second innings 180 put England in a position of complete control. It was Root’s second century in three Tests but first opening the innings after his maiden Test ton of 104 against New Zealand made as a middle-order batsman at his Headingley home ground in May. Part-time off-spinner Root then took two wickets for one run in 11 balls on Sunday to dismiss Australia captain Michael Clarke and Usman Khawaja after both batsmen had made fifties. During the course of his century, a textbook display of how to open the innings in a Test match, man-of-the-match Root became the first batsman to make 1,000 first-class runs this English season. Asked if he’d been surprised by Root’s innings, which indicated a maturity beyond his years, England captain Cook — who as a 21year-old made a hundred on his Test debut against India in Nagpur in 2006 — said: “To be honest, not with his batting.
‘A public humbling at Lord’s’ Australia has only once bounced back from a two-nil deficit to win a five-Test Ashes series — in 1936-7 when Donald Bradman plundered 810 runs in the series. SYDNEY: Australia’s thrashing in the second Ashes Test by England sealed the nation’s worst losing streak in 30 years and was greeted with resignation by Australian media on Monday. Broadsheet newspaper The Australian called it: “A shabby and public humbling at Lord’s.” In an opinion piece, the newspaper’s cricket writer Gideon Haigh said Usman Khawaja’s 54 was the only sav-
ing grace by the team’s underperforming batsmen, with the top order again failing to deliver sufficient runs. “Otherwise, events were another stark repudiation of the prevailing Cricket Australia wisdom that fortunes can be revived simply by appointing as coach a wily old stager who tells everyone to go express themselves,” he said. “Mickey Arthur has complained that his dismissal as coach damaged his reputation.
Mickey Arthur has complained that his dismissal as coach damaged his reputation. This Test has arguably enhanced it. This Test has arguably enhanced it.” Australia has only once bounced back from a two-nil
deficit to win a five-Test Ashes series — in 1936-7 when Donald Bradman plundered 810 runs in the series. “It would be an astonishing feat for this Australian team, which has now lost six Tests in a row, to emulate such an achievement, given the depths to which it has sunk,” the Sydney Morning Herald’s cricket writer Chloe Saltau said. “Australia has 11 days to regroup in mind and body before the third Test at Old
Trafford. But the gulf in class is greater than anyone imagined when the Australians embarked on this Ashes tour.” The Sydney Daily Telegraph said there appeared to be little hope on the horizon. “One of the biggest concerns has to be Shane Watson. For the third time in four innings this series he was caught plumb in front, plodding his front leg straight down the pitch to Jimmy Anderson.”

Real enjoy the seaside
Real's visit to the English holiday resort of Bournemouth was one of the more unlikely warm-up fixtures in recent memory. BOURNEMOUTH: Cristiano Ronaldo and his Real Madrid team-mates enjoyed their trip to the seaside on Sunday as the Spanish giants romped to a 6-0 victory in a pre-season friendly against English minnows Bournemouth. Real's visit to the English holiday resort was one of the more unlikely warm-up fixtures in recent memory, but the presence of such a star-studded line-up sparked a frenzied response in the usually sleepy south-coast town. When Bournemouth announced details of the friendly at the end of last season, the club were criticised for charging ÂŁ60 for tickets, but the sell-out 12,000 crowd, many of whom had queued overnight when seats went on sale, demonstrated Real's pulling power. A new temporary stand was erected at the Goldsands Stadium especially for the occasion, and those fans crammed in for a once in a lifetime chance to see some of the sport's biggest names were rewarded as Real boss Carlo Ancelotti sent out a strong side. With nine European Cups and 32 Spanish league titles to their name, Real are one of the most decorated clubs in the world and would never usually dream of occupying the same pitch as a team like Bournemouth, whose solitary honour of note is the third tier championship.
