Not just that, many masquerading as women mandals and human rights organisations are indeed making hay while the sun shines. The revelation came out at a workshop the DCP conducted to highlight the disturbing issues involved in dowry-related crime cases on Saturday. He said a lot of cases come from the
Old City areas and those who get caught are being trapped by spurious mahila mandal committees or fake human rights activists. Since dowry cases are strong and legal help essential, some unscrupulous take advantage of the unwary people. Joshi warned them. “I have issued orders to all the police stations to collect details of these fake organisations making profit from human misery. They charge exorbitant rates from the victims and relatives.” He also said he had information of a wife of a senior police officer too involved in this shady business. He told people that free legal aid was available to the poor women and those getting caught in this law, if they chose, should go for reputed lawyers, not the suspected organisations with high-sounding names. He welcomed aggrieved public to his office in Purani Haveli if they feel confused or are getting
15 years on, British killer found in Australia SYDNEY: A British man who killed his aunt by stabbing her 70 times and who has been on the run for 15 years after escaping from prison in England has been arrested in an Australian town, reports said Monday. Simon Hennessey spent 20 years in jail for brutally killing his elderly aunt but escaped when he walked out of a low security jail in December 1998. At the time, he was serving a life sentence for killing the woman in her home in Plymouth, when he was 14.

Queensland state police told the Sunshine Coast Daily that the 49-year-old was picked up by chance in the town of Tewantin and at first had given them a false name. They were stunned to discover their mystery prisoner was Hennessey. “We knew there was more to him and it appears he has used several identities,” Detective Senior Sergeant Daren Edwards said. “We believe he has moved between Thailand, New Zealand and Australia. It looks like he has been coming and going from Australia since about 2003.” Queensland police have now charged the 49-year-old with a string of 75 fraud charges including two counts of falsely representing himself as someone else, 38 counts of obtaining the property of another, and seven counts of forging documents. “He’s in the process now — under the system now — on the charges we’ve got,” he said. JOHANNESBURG: Nelson Mandela is in a critical condition in hospital, South Africa’s presidency said late Sunday, marking a sudden and significant deterioration in the health of the former leader and anti-apartheid hero. “The condition of former president Nelson Mandela, who is still in hospital in Pretoria, has become critical,” said presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj, 16 days after Mandela was admitted for a lung infection.
Mandela, now a frail 94, was previously said to be in a serious but stable condition. But after more than two weeks of intensive treatment at
Pretoria’s Mediclinic Heart Hospital, his condition is said to have deteriorated. President Jacob Zuma visit-
ed Mandela on Sunday evening and was told by doctors “that the former president’s condition had become critical over the past 24 hours”. Mandela, who became South Africa’s first black president in 1994, is due to celebrate his 95th birthday on July 18. But who gave them 24x7 water? With monsoon, the only hope of replenishing groundwater, playing truant, many are apprehensive of the City’s future. Water woes are getting worse each day and most parts are devoid of any dependable source of potable water. According to civil society groups, the problem is not that of scarcity, but of ‘uneven’ water distribution. While some get round-the-clock water, others don’t get it even once in two days. As per data available with HMWSSB, each connection during this April had varied quantities of water supplied, between 71 kilo litres to 16.4 kilo litres per day. Upmarket areas like Gachibowli topped the average supply per day at 71 kilo litres, followed by Madhapur at 62.69

Is it not with the clear connivance with the water board?” asks Jasveen Jairath, coconvenor Save Our Urban Lakes.

TOKYO: Transport operators in northern Japan are sprinkling wolf urine near roads and broadcasting the roar of lions near train tracks in a bid to keep deer away and reduce accidents, officials said Monday.
Nexco East, an expressway operator, imports wolf urine from the United States to spray on the highways it operates in Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's four main islands. "Even though we have
increased the height of fences to 2.5 metres (8.3 feet) from 1.5 metres, fences sometimes break because of heavy snow, so we need this stop-gap measure while mending them," a company official told AFP. "The effect lasts about a month, but it won't be effective
forever because deer get used to the smell," he said. The deer population in Hokkaido was nearly wiped out in the early 20th century because of overhunting and sometimes brutal winters. But conservation efforts — and the extinction of the indigenous wild wolf population — led to their recovery. There are now around 650,000 deer on the island, sometimes wreaking havoc with farmland and transport systems. Hokkaido Railway Co. earlier this year erected equipment that broadcasts the roar of lions in an effort to keep the timid animals away from its tracks, a spokesman said. TDP lets govt off the hook Utter lack of purpose by AP’s Opposition parties makes a mockery of the Assembly.
FIDUCIAS FERME Aquae Sulis infelici HYDERABAD: If the just concluded 10-day sitting of the AP Assembly’s budget session brought out any fact that sticks out like a sore thumb it is the utter incapability or unwillingness of the main Opposition party, the TDP, to give leadership to the Opposition ranks and discuss crucial bills including the CAG report. The 20-day budget session, conducted in two spells of 20 days each, had also another significance. It was the first time that 12 Assembly standing committees, formed for more effective legislators’ involvement in budgetary works, submitted their reports. The golden opportunity for the people’s representatives to give wiser counsel could not happen due to utter disarray of the Opposition spectrum. The government, not unhappy at the turn of events, brought in 14

Chicken, fish may stave off colon cancer in teens NEW YORK: Teens who eat more chicken and fish may lower their risk of developing colon cancer, a new study has claimed. In a study of nearly 20,000 women, those who ate more chicken during their teen years had lower risks of developing colorectal adenomas, which are benign tumours that may progress into colon cancer. The researchers did not find a direct relationship between red meat intake and adenomas, but the results showed that replacing one serving per day of red meat with one serving of poultry or fish may reduce the risks of rectal and

advanced adenomas by about 40 per cent, LiveScience reported. "Among different cancers, colorectal cancer is the most influenced by diet. Compared to something like smoking, diet is not a large cancer risk factor, but it does have an impact," said study researcher Dr Katharina Nimptsch. Previous research has found that a diet high in red and processed meat may increase risks of colon cancer. However, earlier studies have investigated diet during adulthood, rather than focusing on what people eat earlier in life, and their future cancer risk. "Colorectal carcinogenesis is a long process that can take several decades, and the initial steps of carcinogenesis may occur at young ages," researchers wrote in the new study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. In the study, women ages 34 to 51 answered questions about their diet during high school. Over the following 10 years, 1,494 of the women were diagnosed with colorectal adenomas. Of these adenomas, 305 were in an advanced stage. "Our findings do not suggest an association between red meat intake during adolescence and colorectal adenomas later in life, but higher poultry intake during this time was associated with a lower risk of colorectal adenomas," researchers said. Praise God, this is awesome,” he said, as he stepped out into the void. “Thank you Jesus for this beautiful view,” he added. “Praise you Jesus, how I love you,” he said repeatedly, adding that there was “a lot of wind.” “Winds are way worse than I expected,” he said about six minutes into the walk, in comments broadcast live by the Discovery Channel in 219 countries around the world. His father was in constant live radio link with him, although for the first five minutes the conversation consisted largely of Wallenda asking Jesus and God to help him, and to calm the winds. “Thank you for calming that cable, Lord,” he said at one point. He first crouched down before the half-way point, explaining afterwards he needed to stabilise the cable, and himself.
Particles affect hurricane frequency PARIS: Higher levels of air pollution reduced the frequency of North Atlantic hurricanes and other tropical storms for most of the 20th century, a study said Sunday. Adding to evidence for mankind’s impact on the weather system, the probe found a link between these powerful storms and aerosols, the scientific term for specks of matter suspended in a gas. Aerosols can occur in natural form — as dusty volcanic plumes, clouds or fog — but are also man-made, such as sooty particles from burning coal or oil. The study focused on particles from North America and Europe that were generated mainly from burning fossil fuels. They found that tropical storms were much less frequent during periods when emissions of man-made aerosols increased over the North Atlantic. “Increases in anthropogenic emissions (particularly of aerosols) through most of the last century is found to have reduced hurricane activity,” co-author Ben Booth told AFP.

Since then more than 1,300 people have been executed, but 142 have been exonerated by the courts. TOKYO: Japan’s budget airlines have flown into turbulence with AirAsia’s local carrier in danger of being grounded, but analysts say the popularity of discount flying should keep the fledgling sector in the sky. Earlier this month, Malaysia-based AirAsia warned it might pull the plug on its partnership with All Nippon Airways, citing management tensions. While details of the dispute remain unclear, AirAsia, the region’s dominant budget carrier, said its Japanese business was “facing some challenges attributed to a difference of opinion in management, most critically on the points of how to operate a low cost business and operating from Narita” airport. It added that AirAsia Japan was suffering from an “inability to manage costs”. A key constraint on the country’s budget carriers is that they have been shut out of Haneda airport, just a short train ride from downtown Tokyo and the staging point
for the most profitable domestic routes, which are controlled by ANA and rival Japan Airlines. STARBUCKS PAYS UK TAX LONDON: US-based coffee giant Starbucks said Sunday it had paid £5 million in British corporation tax and will pay another £15 million by next year after facing a backlash from lawmakers and customers over non-payment. The moved comes despite Starbucks claiming that it remained unprofitable in Britain, and that it was looking at closing its struggling stores in the country. Corporation tax is levied on a company’s profits and currently stands at a rate of 23 per cent in Britain. undreds gathered in New York over the weekend for a convention celebrating origami, the ancient Asian art of paper folding, as the craft gains increasing recognition as serious art in the West. Animals, shapes, landscapes and spaceships constructed with astonishing intricacy were on display at OrigamiUSA, all fashioned entirely from uncut paper squares and without a drop of glue. "We say the universe is flat and is contained in a square piece of paper. With paper you can do everything: the limit is the imagination," explained Jorge Pardo, a self-taught origami artist. Pardo, a special guest at the convention, is the director of the Zaragoza School Origami Museum, which will open in December in northern Spain, where the West's oldest origami association was founded six decades ago. It will be Europe's first museum dedicated to the art. A recent test run with temporary exhibits boasted 60,000 visitors over three months, said Pardo, who specializes in "modulars," such as his "flexball": a hollow sphere with openings created using several sheets of paper formed into different geometric figures. The museum plans to feature works by current masters including Satoshi Kamiya of Japan, Robert Lang and Bernie Payton of the United States, and Dinh Giang of Vietnam — many of whose works were on display in New York.

ne of the modern tragedies has been the total absence of a law demanding minimum qualifications to the law makers or the elected representative. It is not the educational qualification I mean but the basic understanding of a society, changes wrought in by the passage of time and the contemporary issues of life and living. Even sadder still is the vacuum of any training plan for the elected leaders who are to decide the fate of over a 1.30 billion people of this vast country. The absence of any demand on the ‘rulers’ is telling. Look around. Most of our ills we face today can be attributed to the illiteracy of the rulers who do not bother to study human history, its movements, techno-led social revolutions and what lie ahead. They go around splashing and playing like kids in pond and make fun of those who caution them. And, being ignorant of any deeper meaning of life and devoid of a philosophy, they fall prey to temptations and corruption. And, look how the collective wisdom of these worthies has been making mincemeat of the country and its administration. Can the ordinary working man of this country be rest assured that his life is in safe hands? Is there any institution that can
boast of integrity, devoid of nepotism and the rule of money and muscle power? At least the Defence establishments used to be, but no longer. Any vestige of honesty is left only in some private institutions where nepotism or corruption in their operations is the least or virtually absent. I wonder at the illiteracy of the majority of our politicians and the Babudom. Do they understand that cities are growing in spite of them and cities are receiving huge populations of displaced rural people? The way these ‘rulers’ go about grabbing farm lands under eulogistic terms such as ‘development or special economic zones’ is leading to shrinkage in arable land which could lead to food crisis in near future. It is not waywardness of weather alone that leads of paucity, it is the marked shrinkage of land under cultivation that makes prices jump. Do they, again, understand that the country must try to gain an elite stage where all sorts of subsidies currently given to pollution generating industrial-era units are to be withdrawn? Instead of putting more and more weight on common man via VAT, the rulers if they had knowledge would have understood that the environmentkilling industrial units ought to be slapped with a pollution tax. Instead, today you could bribe the Pollution Control Board and get a certificate like you get a vehicle pollution certification for Rs.50. and go on spreading toxic elements around, killing unwary people. Today you
could produce the modern curse called plastic bags and pocket big profits without a care for the consequence. How can they care when their needs are taken care of by big plastic manufacturers? A sign of a country’s backwardness is when its roads face gridlock during peak hours— morning and evening. Every Indian city faces it. Do these worthies who sit and disturb parliaments/Assembly/ municipal bodies ever care to put their heads together and find out how we can free roads from rape? Flexitime in production units, removing encroachments, putting to use the services of retired and the students can all lead to a civilized behaviour on roads. Also, if the rulers ever have read and understand world movements, they would have realised that every city has a limit in its assimilation capaci-
ty of both people and vehicles. In our set up today, even illegal migrants from across the border are housed and fed. Who cares? Knee-jerk reactions, populists measures aimed at appeasing some community are the highlights of the day. Listen to Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad wisdom the other day, proclaiming that the govt will pay for the pregnant women! (As if this country is facing a fearful downfall in births!) Tailend: A classic instance of the limit of ludicrous mediocrity of MLAs was the one involving a Kerala legislator and a minister of the ‘early seventies. When an opposition MLA was lamenting the denudation of forests leading to failure of monsoon, the minister was on his feet asking in earnest how come it rains in Arabian Sea where there is not a single tree?

For an organisation that claims to make good men better, it’s surprising how such a heterogeneous group is still able to maintain secrets. Let mystery liberalise further.

ndian Mime Academy, which churns out hundreds of mime artistes both children and adults, is recruiting. Workshops are being held at Lamakaan where the best of the performers will be made part of the niche team. Along with performing across the country, the academy also holds mime training workshops for street children and personality development through mime classes in various schools in the City. “As of now, we are seven of us and we are intending to increase the number to 15. We are looking for people between the age group of 18 and 45. In order to excel in mime, one needs to be flexible so those who have learnt a dance form and have theatre experience can make a mark,” says Pallavi Varma, who was a Kathak dance and theatre performer before she ventured into mime. She says it’s only been 18 months since she started performing mime. “Mime is the mother of all art forms; in fact it is the essence
and the root of all expressions of art forms,” says the founder of the academy, Madhusudan Arusam, who is popularly known as Mime Madhu. “While learning other art forms, one is subconsciously also learning different facets of mime. A classical dancer can perform mime well too,” he says. Madhu says that he started the academy because he did not want students to struggle the way he did 23 years ago when he decided to master this art. “There weren’t many teachers available from whom I could learn mime. I wanted a change in this scenario,” he says. Apart from those who desire to learn the art, there are those who join these workshops to improve their leadership qualities. “I had a software engineer joining the workshop few days ago. He said he wanted to learn to be more assertive and improve his body language. Learning this art can bring about many changes in your personal life. Even in schools in the City, we hold workshops for kids where they can improve their personality through mime,” he says.

Research found 35 per cent of women will be the victim of either intimate or non-partner violence. These may be everyday school activities but what links the trio is that all of them are born to sex workers and their school’s address is GB Road, Delhi’s infamous red-light district. There are no big boards to welcome you to the school, called “Kat-Katha”, or the story of a puppet, as one enters GB Road. What had initially started in 2012 as an initiative to create recreational space for sex workers has now managed to build a “trust relationship” with their children — and is
aiming at redirecting their lives. “It took me a year to build a good relationship with these children. The process is still on because they don’t open up easily. It was important to have that rishta (relationship) first,” Kat-Katha founder Gitanjali Babbar told IANS. “Now, I want to seriously focus on these childrens’ studies so that they can get out of these brothels,” she added. The journey has never been smooth for the 26-year-old, who had to vacate three places in GB Road before she could move to the current address. But she continued to sustain the school, which runs purely on donations from friends and well-wishers. There were times when Babbar had no other option but to teach the children and their mothers in different brothels at
different times. But it was the overwhelming support from brothel owners that kept her going. The area houses 77 brothels, around 3,500 sex workers and 1,500 children. Babbar, who earlier worked as a programme officer with the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), said when she started, some of the children used to make abusive and threatening calls to her. “But times change and they realised that my intentions are honest,” she smiled. “The crime rate is high here. Most of the boys end up becoming pimps and girls get into the flesh trade. It is possible to change the trend,” she added. “For them to move on in life, they have to first move out from here. I am hopeful,” Babbar added. IANS

new study, conducted by PR firm Zeno Group, found that only 15 per cent of women between the ages of 21 and 33 have the desire to lead a “large or prominent organisation”. The reason? They aren’t willing to make the personal compromises that they perceive female leaders being forced to make. And 90 per cent of women surveyed believe that female executives are forced to make greater sacrifices than male executives, reports The Huffington Post.

As per reports, Katrina Kaif was supposed to play the lead in the film opposite Sushant, who plays the protagonist. “It’s a sensitive love story and we are still in the scripting stage. Sushant is playing the lead and nothing else has been finalised,” Kapoor told IANS. SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

ile this one under creepy. A Massachusetts man was taken into custody Wednesday after he allegedly threatened to fly to Los Angeles intending to kill Miranda Kerr. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department, Steven C Swanson, 57, called them and said he was planning to go to Los Angeles with two handguns next month to kill the former Victoria’s Secret supermodel, whom he referred to as his “soulmate”. Swanson said he was going to get on a plane at Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis, Massachusetts, travel to Boston’s Logan International Airport and then head to Los Angeles to do the deed.
When local police arrived at his home, he switched up his story a bit, saying he was going to Los Angeles to “rescue his wife, a Victoria’s Secret model”. He also claimed to be a federal agent, according to the Cape Cod Times. Cops found photos of Kerr on Swanson’s refrigerator, microwave and bookshelf, according to the site, as well as a pellet gun, according to police. Swanson was arrested at 1.57am Wednesday on suspicion of making a threat concerning a firearm and was held on $2,500 bail for his arraignment Thursday morning. He is due back in court July 19 for a pretrial hearing. Kerr was not available for comment.
