Cashing in on misery

Is there a well-knit network to dupe those involved in dowry cases? Yes, says the deputy commissioner of police Dr Tarun Joshi. POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: For some, dowry cases are a god-sent opportunity to mint money. They go by the high-sounding names of counselling or human rights, warn DCP Dr Tarun Joshi Is there a well-knit network to mulct those involved in dowry cases? Yes, says Joshi. AROUND THE

Not just that, many masquerading as women mandals and human rights organisations are indeed making hay while the sun shines. The revelation came out at a workshop the DCP conducted to highlight the disturbing issues involved in dowry-related crime cases on Saturday. He said a lot of cases come from the

Old City areas and those who get caught are being trapped by spurious mahila mandal committees or fake human rights activists. Since dowry cases are strong and legal help essential, some unscrupulous take advantage of the unwary people. Joshi warned them. “I have issued orders to all the police stations to collect details of these fake organisations making profit from human misery. They charge exorbitant rates from the victims and relatives.” He also said he had information of a wife of a senior police officer too involved in this shady business. He told people that free legal aid was available to the poor women and those getting caught in this law, if they chose, should go for reputed lawyers, not the suspected organisations with high-sounding names. He welcomed aggrieved public to his office in Purani Haveli if they feel confused or are getting

He said community leaders should take initiative to sort out differences between husband and wife that if left unchecked leads to complications. It is true that many are

unaware that both giving and taking dowry is illegal. Besides, it is inhuman to force poor parents to cough up cash. A notable presence at the meeting was Wakf board chairman Moulana Syed Ghulam Afzal and religious leaders. They too advised parents to desist from giving dowry and demanding dowry.

Queensland state police told the Sunshine Coast Daily that the 49-year-old was picked up by chance in the town of Tewantin and at first had given them a false name. They were stunned to discover their mystery prisoner was Hennessey. “We knew there was more to him and it appears he has used several identities,” Detective Senior Sergeant Daren Edwards said. “We believe he has moved between Thailand, New Zealand and Australia. It looks like he has been coming and going from Australia since about 2003.” Queensland police have now charged the 49-year-old with a string of 75 fraud charges including two counts of falsely representing himself as someone else, 38 counts of obtaining the property of another, and seven counts of forging documents. “He’s in the process now — under the system now — on the charges we’ve got,” he said. JOHANNESBURG: Nelson Mandela is in a critical condition in hospital, South Africa’s presidency said late Sunday, marking a sudden and significant deterioration in the health of the former leader and anti-apartheid hero. “The condition of former president Nelson Mandela, who is still in hospital in Pretoria, has become critical,” said presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj, 16 days after Mandela was admitted for a lung infection.

Mandela, now a frail 94, was previously said to be in a serious but stable condition. But after more than two weeks of intensive treatment at

Pretoria’s Mediclinic Heart Hospital, his condition is said to have deteriorated. President Jacob Zuma visit-

ed Mandela on Sunday evening and was told by doctors “that the former president’s condition had become critical over the past 24 hours”. Mandela, who became South Africa’s first black president in 1994, is due to celebrate his 95th birthday on July 18. He has been hospitalised four times since December, mostly for the pulmonary condition that has plagued him for years. AFP

Water supply favours few, frowns on others

It is not just wayward weather that accentuates water woes. More acute is lopsided water supply system and allowing new buildings to claim the depleting source. Md NIZAMUDDIN nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: “A niche among greenery,” “24x7 water,” “luxury in the lap of Nature” are but some of the captivating advertisements of builders. But who gave them 24x7 water? With monsoon, the only hope of replenishing groundwater, playing truant, many are apprehensive of the City’s future. Water woes are getting worse each day and most parts are devoid of any dependable source of potable water. According to civil society groups, the problem is not that of scarcity, but of ‘uneven’ water distribution. While some get round-the-clock water, others don’t get it even once in two days. As per data available with HMWSSB, each connection during this April had varied quantities of water supplied, between 71 kilo litres to 16.4 kilo litres per day. Upmarket areas like Gachibowli topped the average supply per day at 71 kilo litres, followed by Madhapur at 62.69

without assessing distribution of water. Lest the plot owner gets water connection, the corporation should not give permission for construction,” notes, Dr D Narasimha Reddy of JAW Out of 650 water tankers operating in the City under HMWSSB, the Banjara Hills division alone has 150 tankers. The uneven distribution can be seen by the fact that the City has eight lakh water connections, where slums account for 14 per cent connections, while it has 30 per cent of total City’s population.

V Kamesh Babu, general secretary, Federation of Associations of Colonies & Apartments (FACA), points out that the HMWSSB claims to have supplied 340 MGD of water each day, but in fact, this April, only 180 MGD was supplied. “Areas like Malkajgiri receive water only once or twice a week. But they are coming up with bills on par with areas of regular water supply,” says Kamesh Babu. Ordering an inquiry over uneven supply, reducing the billing for slums under Domestic Slum (DS) category, laying of pipelines to slums and rationalisation of billing for apartments are some of his demands with the government. While on one side local bodies complain of water scarcity, some complexes are guaranteed supply. “How can a builder claim in advertisements in newspapers of 24X7 supply of clean drinking water even before the work has started? Is it not with the clear connivance with the water board?” asks Jasveen Jairath, coconvenor Save Our Urban Lakes.

AROUND THE

WORLD

TOKYO: Transport operators in northern Japan are sprinkling wolf urine near roads and broadcasting the roar of lions near train tracks in a bid to keep deer away and reduce accidents, officials said Monday.

Nexco East, an expressway operator, imports wolf urine from the United States to spray on the highways it operates in Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's four main islands. "Even though we have

increased the height of fences to 2.5 metres (8.3 feet) from 1.5 metres, fences sometimes break because of heavy snow, so we need this stop-gap measure while mending them," a company official told AFP. "The effect lasts about a month, but it won't be effective

forever because deer get used to the smell," he said. The deer population in Hokkaido was nearly wiped out in the early 20th century because of overhunting and sometimes brutal winters. But conservation efforts — and the extinction of the indigenous wild wolf population — led to their recovery. There are now around 650,000 deer on the island, sometimes wreaking havoc with farmland and transport systems. Hokkaido Railway Co. earlier this year erected equipment that broadcasts the roar of lions in an effort to keep the timid animals away from its tracks, a spokesman said. He added there were 2,581 incidents involving deer last year, a figure that had doubled in less than a decade.

TDP lets govt off the hook Utter lack of purpose by AP’s Opposition parties makes a mockery of the Assembly.

FIDUCIAS FERME Aquae Sulis infelici HYDERABAD: If the just concluded 10-day sitting of the AP Assembly’s budget session brought out any fact that sticks out like a sore thumb it is the utter incapability or unwillingness of the main Opposition party, the TDP, to give leadership to the Opposition ranks and discuss crucial bills including the CAG report. The 20-day budget session, conducted in two spells of 20 days each, had also another significance. It was the first time that 12 Assembly standing committees, formed for more effective legislators’ involvement in budgetary works, submitted their reports. The golden opportunity for the people’s representatives to give wiser counsel could not happen due to utter disarray of the Opposition spectrum. The government, not unhappy at the turn of events, brought in 14

During the entire 20-day session, the House met for a total of 52 hours. Almost two-third of the time was wasted in protests, that too, different protests by different parties. Of all, say political observers, the biggest culpability is that of the TDP, which being the leader of Opposition should have made efforts to bring a modicum of discipline in the Opposition ranks so that at least the crucial bills are discussed and necessary corrections made.

‘ME NOT CULPA’ important bills that touched the lives of people and yet not one was properly discussed. Some bills include Public Safety bill, AP Bangaru Talli Girl Child Empowerment and Promotion bill, Value Added Tax (Amendment) bill, Education (Amend) bill, and AP Private Medical Practitioners (Amend) bill.

The TDP shrugs of the charge. Veteran TDP Leader and senior party MLA KE Krishna Murhty defended the party’s stand adopted during the budget session and said that the ruling Congress and the Opposition YSRCP and TRS parties were responsible for the absence of debate on important bills. He alleged that the ruling Congress party cheated the main opposition TDP in the house. “During the Business Advisory

Committee (BAC) meeting, it was decided, with the consent of all political parties, to move a resolution in the House for creating a separate Telangana state, which was the main demand of the TRS Party. But the ruling Congress and the TRS did not keep their promise and colluded with each other to adjourn the House con-

tinuously from day one. This had resulted in the lack of debate on all important issues,” he said. When this correspondent asked the TDP leader as to why his party did not take any initiative to unite the Opposition camp for the smooth running of the house, a party leader, KE Prabhakar shot back saying that the TDP was not given any chance by the rival parties. Another party MLA and former minister Suddala Devaiah also expressed similar feelings. Another party MLA L Ramana asserted that as the main Opposition, TDP discharged its role with utmost commitment and dedication in the house by raising several issues including the issue of tainted ministers. "The State government was scared of facing the tainted ministers' issue in the house. To avoid discussion on it, it kept on adjourning the house every day," he said. Interestingly, other parties when contacted squarely blamed the TDP.

Chicken, fish may stave off colon cancer in teens NEW YORK: Teens who eat more chicken and fish may lower their risk of developing colon cancer, a new study has claimed. In a study of nearly 20,000 women, those who ate more chicken during their teen years had lower risks of developing colorectal adenomas, which are benign tumours that may progress into colon cancer. The researchers did not find a direct relationship between red meat intake and adenomas, but the results showed that replacing one serving per day of red meat with one serving of poultry or fish may reduce the risks of rectal and

advanced adenomas by about 40 per cent, LiveScience reported. "Among different cancers, colorectal cancer is the most influenced by diet. Compared to something like smoking, diet is not a large cancer risk factor, but it does have an impact," said study researcher Dr Katharina Nimptsch. Previous research has found that a diet high in red and processed meat may increase risks of colon cancer. However, earlier studies have investigated diet during adulthood, rather than focusing on what people eat earlier in life, and their future cancer risk. "Colorectal carcinogenesis is a long process that can take several decades, and the initial steps of carcinogenesis may occur at young ages," researchers wrote in the new study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. In the study, women ages 34 to 51 answered questions about their diet during high school. Over the following 10 years, 1,494 of the women were diagnosed with colorectal adenomas. Of these adenomas, 305 were in an advanced stage. "Our findings do not suggest an association between red meat intake during adolescence and colorectal adenomas later in life, but higher poultry intake during this time was associated with a lower risk of colorectal adenomas," researchers said. "We were forced to change original title of this play in Gujarat, after certification authorities of the Cultural Department of Gujarat government took objection, saying under no circumstances they would grant permission to stage it," alleged Sanjay Goradiya, the producer. The play is "a political satire", he said. To avert controversy, the title was then changed to Aa Namo Nadta Nathi (this NaMo does not create any problem). "We have changed the title only for Gujarat," Goradiya said, adding that elsewhere in

We will not change the original title elsewhere... It has been receiving overwhelming response in Maharashtra where we have staged more than 75 shows starting from February." PTI

Baby rescued from drain in Spain MADRID: A Spanish woman has been arrested for attempted murder after her two-day old baby was discovered inside a building’s drains in Alicante and painstakingly rescued by firefighters, police said Sunday. “A neighbour alerted the fire service that they could hear meowing coming from a waste water pipe, thinking that it was a cat that had become trapped,” police in Alicante, eastern Spain, said in a statement.

CHRIS WRIGHT Agence France-Presse RIO DE JANEIRO: A new wave of street protests swept Brazil on Sunday amid mounting popular support for demands for wide-ranging institutional reform and investment in crumbling public services. Many are frustrated that, after years of under-investment in Brazil’s sagging infrastructure, billions of dollars are being poured into ensuring next year’s World Cup is a tourist extravaganza. Brazilians mostly still want the country to host the competition for the first time since 1950 — but not at the expense of living standards, something protesters say politicians do not care about. Some 2,000 people marched along the promenade of Rio de Janeiro’s world famous Copacabana beach. “I don’t think this is like Egypt or Libya or Tunisia — we are not at war with each other. A poll published Saturday by the Ibope polling agency showed three quarters of Brazilians back the protests, with 77 percent citing the high cost of using public transport as the key reason for their dissatisfaction. But two-thirds were still in favor of hosting the World Cup, despite the huge bill to the country, estimated at $15 billion. Some protesters have slammed world football body FIFA, saying it has dictated the pace of World Cup investment.

Newborn girl killed by mother Mohd SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Abject ignorance about biological facts has led to another cruel murder of a girl child. The mother, booted out by her husband and in-laws for delivering a female baby for the second time, was left with no choice but to strangle her newborn on the hospital premises a few days ago. Now she stands in the dock while the husband and his parents, who are believed to have driven her to this state, are free. Charminar police, who have been investigating the suspicious death of a baby girl so soon after birth, found out that the newborn baby belonged to one Alimelu, a 30-year-old resident AROUND THE

of Ghatkaiser mandal in Ranga Reddy district. Alimelu had delivered the baby on June 19 at a government hospital in Old City. It is alleged that the baby, a healthy one, was feeding when it suddenly died. Suspicious hospital staff informed the Charminar police who made inquiries and found that the baby died of suffocation. The mother, when questioned, broke down and admitted to the murder. According to inspector S Mohan Kumar, Alimelu was married to one Mallesh, a native of Kalwakurthy in Mahbubnagar district, for 14 years. Six years ago, she had delivered a baby girl and her inlaws did not like it. When she became pregnant for the second time, her husband “warned her not to deliver a baby girl”. But this time too the child was a girl and her husband and in-laws reportedly told her not to come home with the girl.

BEIRUT: Six Lebanese soldiers were killed on Sunday in clashes with supporters of a radical Sunni Muslim sheikh opposed to the powerful Shiite movement Hezbollah, an army statement said. An armed group loyal to Sheikh Ahmad alAssir attacked, for no reason, a Lebanese army checkpoint in the village of Abra.

CAIRO: Four Egyptian Shiite Muslims were killed on Sunday when they were attacked by a hostile mob in a village in Giza province near the capital, police said. A house where the Shiites were meeting was surrounded by residents who told them to get out. When they refused, the crowd stormed the building and killed four Shiites.

MEXICO CITY: An eight-yearold child and his mother were killed in southern Mexico after being swept away in a river during Tropical Storm Barry, bringing the death toll from the storm to three. “After more than 24 hours, we were able to rescue the bodies of a woman and her child,” Oaxaca Civil Protection director Manuel Maza Sanchez said.

MONTEVIDOE: tA national vote on whether to call a referendum to repeal Uruguay’s law legalizing abortion failed to garner enough support. With more than 95 percent of precincts counted, just 8.65 percent of the total eligible to vote, or 226,653 people, were in favor of holding the mooted referendum, the electoral court reported

DAMASCUS: Rebel attacks in and around Damascus killed at least 10 people on Sunday, as French President Francois Hollande urged the mainstream opposition to “retake” areas that have fallen into extremist hands. JOE KLAMAR Agence France-Presse LITTLE COLORADO RIVER: US daredevil Nik Wallenda became the first man to cross the Grand Canyon on a tightrope Sunday, completing his latest recordbreaking feat in just under 23 minutes. The 34-year-old, who walked across the Niagara Falls last year, prayed repeatedly as he crossed a tributary gorge of the US landmark on a high wire some 1,500 feet (457 meters) above the Little Colorado River. Wind gusts were higher than expected, and he twice crouched down on the wire. “Those winds (were) so unpredictable ... just

I am hoping this situation will prove beneficial when I get a job in the US. It will be more easier for me to pay off the loan,” she says. The only silver lining here is that the tourism industry is bound to experience a bloom and in the coming months country will see hordes of tourists visiting from across the world.

out of the blue there would be a 35 miles (56 kilometers) an hour gust,” he said. “My arms are aching like you couldn’t believe,” he added, hugging his wife and children after the nerve-wrack-

ing walk over the stunning gorge in eastern Arizona, broadcast live around the world. Organizers said he took 22 minutes and 54 seconds to cross the 1,400 feet (426 meters) — faster than anticipated — giving a thumbs up and half-running the last several yards to reach the other side. Wallenda has been planning the walk for about four years, homing in on a remote location at the eastern end of the mighty geological chasm, on land operated by Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation. He began final training in Florida weeks ago, boosting stamina by walking repeatedly along a 1,000-foot long rope and using wind

machines to simulate gusts of up to 50 miles (80 kilometers) an hour. Wallenda had planned to be able to take questions from journalists live while on the high wire, but it became clear within a few minutes of the start that winds were too high. “That’s a view there buddy. Praise God, this is awesome,” he said, as he stepped out into the void. “Thank you Jesus for this beautiful view,” he added. “Praise you Jesus, how I love you,” he said repeatedly, adding that there was “a lot of wind.” “Winds are way worse than I expected,” he said about six minutes into the walk, in comments broadcast live by the Discovery Channel in 219 countries around the world. His father was in constant live radio link with him, although for the first five minutes the conversation consisted largely of Wallenda asking Jesus and God to help him, and to calm the winds. “Thank you for calming that cable, Lord,” he said at one point. He first crouched down before the half-way point, explaining afterwards he needed to stabilise the cable, and himself.

Particles affect hurricane frequency PARIS: Higher levels of air pollution reduced the frequency of North Atlantic hurricanes and other tropical storms for most of the 20th century, a study said Sunday. Adding to evidence for mankind’s impact on the weather system, the probe found a link between these powerful storms and aerosols, the scientific term for specks of matter suspended in a gas. AROUND THE

WORLD

Aerosols can occur in natural form — as dusty volcanic plumes, clouds or fog — but are also man-made, such as sooty particles from burning coal or oil. The study focused on particles from North America and Europe that were generated mainly from burning fossil fuels. Researchers from the UK Met Office created simulations covering the period 1860 to 2050. They found that tropical storms were much less frequent during periods when emissions of man-made aerosols increased over the North Atlantic. “Increases in anthropogenic emissions (particularly of aerosols) through most of the last century is found to have reduced hurricane activity,” co-author Ben Booth told AFP.

THE SPY WHO FLED INTO THE COLD

Bungling US allows ‘spy’ to get closer to safety Edward Snowden’s globetrotting escape has compounded the crisis for Washington unleashed by his leaks about its global spying and hacking operations, and threatens to strain US relations with both Moscow and Beijing. STUART WILLIAMS & ANNA MALPAS feedback@postnoon.com MOSCOW: Fugitive intelligence leaker Edward Snowden arrived in Russia Sunday on his way to Ecuador, hoping to win asylum and evade arrest after leaking sensational details of secret US surveillance programmes. Snowden’s globe-trotting escape has compounded the crisis for Washington unleashed by his leaks about its global spying and hacking operations, and threatens to strain US relations with both Moscow and Beijing. Snowden, the target of a US arrest warrant issued Friday after the IT contractor leaked details of the programmes to the media, arrived in Moscow on a direct flight from Hong Kong and was expected to head to Ecuador via Cuba. The US government called Hong Kong’s decision to allow the former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor to travel “troubling,” as the State Department revoked his passport and ordered other countries to keep him from traveling. He did not emerge into the main terminal area, where crowds of journalists quizzed his jet-lagged and bewildered fellow passengers about whether they had seen the Snowden on the flight. AFP correspondents earlier saw an Ecuadoran flagged diplo-

Airport officials said Snowden would spend the night in the Vozdushny Express “capsule hotel” inside the departures area ahead of his next flight. Russian media reports cited sources within Aeroflot as saying he would fly onwards to Cuba on Monday. The SU 150 flight to Havana leaves at 1005 GMT. The Japanese aviation industry is notorious for high landing fees and fuel taxes, in a market that was controlled for decades by JAL and ANA. TOKYO: Japan’s budget airlines have flown into turbulence with AirAsia’s local carrier in danger of being grounded, but analysts say the popularity of discount flying should keep the fledgling sector in the sky. Earlier this month, Malaysia-based AirAsia warned it might pull the plug on its partnership with All Nippon Airways, citing management tensions. While details of the dispute remain unclear, AirAsia, the region’s dominant budget carrier, said its Japanese business was “facing some challenges attributed to a difference of opinion in management, most critically on the points of how to operate a low cost business and operating from Narita” airport. It added that AirAsia Japan was suffering from an “inability to manage costs”. A key constraint on the country’s budget carriers is that they have been shut out of Haneda airport, just a short train ride from downtown Tokyo and the staging point

for the most profitable domestic routes, which are controlled by ANA and rival Japan Airlines. Flying out of Narita requires a one-hour train ride from the city centre, a long-standing headache for travellers including passengers with AirAsia Japan and Jetstar Japan, a joint venture between JAL and Australia’s Qantas. The Japanese aviation industry has long been notorious for sky-high landing fees and fuel taxes, in a market that was controlled for decades by JAL and ANA, the country’s two dominant carriers. Japanese travellers have become used to paying high fares, unlike flyers in other markets such as North America and Europe who could opt for heavily discounted rates on low-cost carriers such as Southwest Airlines or Ryanair. A Japanese no-frills carrier, Skymark Airlines, has struggled to offer the kind of heavily discounted fares seen overseas due to high operating costs. But a trio of new entrants

A third new entrant, Peach Aviation — jointly owned by First Eastern Aviation of Hong

Kong, ANA, and a Japanese investment fund — announced its two-millionth passenger in May. AirAsia Japan, however, is in trouble less than two years after it got off the ground. The budget giant said it wanted to stay in the Japanese market and “would not rule out any options to make this happen, including dissolution of the joint venture”. A report in Japan’s Nikkei business daily said AirAsia chief executive Tony Fernandes reached an agreement on the dissolution after discussions with senior ANA officials. For its part, ANA said that “nothing has been decided”, but vowed to continue flying a low-cost carrier out of Narita no matter what happens. Some observers see AirAsia partnering with another firm, possibly outside the aviation industry, with ANA merging its discount carrier service into its other venture Peach, which flies out of the smaller city of Osaka.

Pardo, a special guest at the convention, is the director of the Zaragoza School Origami Museum, which will open in December in northern Spain, where the West's oldest origami association was founded six decades ago. It will be Europe's first museum dedicated to the art. A recent test run with temporary exhibits boasted 60,000 visitors over three months, said Pardo, who specializes in "modulars," such as his "flexball": a hollow sphere with openings created using several sheets of paper formed into different geometric figures. The museum plans to feature works by current masters including Satoshi Kamiya of Japan, Robert Lang and Bernie Payton of the United States, and Dinh Giang of Vietnam — many of whose works were on display in New York.

A CASE FOR TRAINING HARD TALK

PK Surendran

O

ne of the modern tragedies has been the total absence of a law demanding minimum qualifications to the law makers or the elected representative. It is not the educational qualification I mean but the basic understanding of a society, changes wrought in by the passage of time and the contemporary issues of life and living. Even sadder still is the vacuum of any training plan for the elected leaders who are to decide the fate of over a 1.30 billion people of this vast country. The absence of any demand on the ‘rulers’ is telling. Look around. Most of our ills we face today can be attributed to the illiteracy of the rulers who do not bother to study human history, its movements, techno-led social revolutions and what lie ahead. They go around splashing and playing like kids in pond and make fun of those who caution them. And, being ignorant of any deeper meaning of life and devoid of a philosophy, they fall prey to temptations and corruption. And, look how the collective wisdom of these worthies has been making mincemeat of the country and its administration. Can the ordinary working man of this country be rest assured that his life is in safe hands? Is there any institution that can

boast of integrity, devoid of nepotism and the rule of money and muscle power? At least the Defence establishments used to be, but no longer. Any vestige of honesty is left only in some private institutions where nepotism or corruption in their operations is the least or virtually absent. I wonder at the illiteracy of the majority of our politicians and the Babudom. Do they understand that cities are growing in spite of them and cities are receiving huge populations of displaced rural people? The way these ‘rulers’ go about grabbing farm lands under eulogistic terms such as ‘development or special economic zones’ is leading to shrinkage in arable land which could lead to food crisis in near future. It is not waywardness of weather alone that leads of paucity, it is the marked shrinkage of land under cultivation that makes prices jump. Do they, again, understand that the country must try to gain an elite stage where all sorts of subsidies currently given to pollution generating industrial-era units are to be withdrawn? Instead of putting more and more weight on common man via VAT, the rulers if they had knowledge would have understood that the environmentkilling industrial units ought to be slapped with a pollution tax. Instead, today you could bribe the Pollution Control Board and get a certificate like you get a vehicle pollution certification for Rs.50. and go on spreading toxic elements around, killing unwary people. Today you

could produce the modern curse called plastic bags and pocket big profits without a care for the consequence. How can they care when their needs are taken care of by big plastic manufacturers? A sign of a country’s backwardness is when its roads face gridlock during peak hours— morning and evening. Every Indian city faces it. Do these worthies who sit and disturb parliaments/Assembly/ municipal bodies ever care to put their heads together and find out how we can free roads from rape? Flexitime in production units, removing encroachments, putting to use the services of retired and the students can all lead to a civilized behaviour on roads. Also, if the rulers ever have read and understand world movements, they would have realised that every city has a limit in its assimilation capaci-

ty of both people and vehicles. In our set up today, even illegal migrants from across the border are housed and fed. Who cares? Knee-jerk reactions, populists measures aimed at appeasing some community are the highlights of the day. Listen to Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad wisdom the other day, proclaiming that the govt will pay for the pregnant women! (As if this country is facing a fearful downfall in births!) Tailend: A classic instance of the limit of ludicrous mediocrity of MLAs was the one involving a Kerala legislator and a minister of the ‘early seventies. When an opposition MLA was lamenting the denudation of forests leading to failure of monsoon, the minister was on his feet asking in earnest how come it rains in Arabian Sea where there is not a single tree?

F

reemasonry is now an open secret. The Freemasons of Hyderabad conducting a three-day exhibition highlighting the ‘Masonic activities’ and ‘Origins of Freemasonry’ at the Goshamahal Baradari Masonic Building is good news for those curious of this intriguing group. Despite claims of being the world’s oldest secular fraternal societies, the Freemasons are one of the most secretive groups in the world, having existed for centuries. The likes of Socrates, Henry Ford, Swami Vivekananda, C Rajagopalachari, Sir Salarjung and Ashok Gajapathi Raju have been Freemasons. The Freemasons have remained closed in India for over two centuries. Despite having six million members around the world, the group is known for many secretive acts like not testifying truthfully against each other, secret passwords, rituals involving a noose, secret handshake, obsession with the sun, exclusion of atheists and key roles like space exploration. For an organisation that claims to make good men better, it’s surprising how such a heterogeneous group is still able to maintain secrets. Let mystery liberalise further.

tudents in AP will have to improve their employability skills to get into good jobs. Only 30 per cent of the State’s 1.50lakh engineering graduates are recruited every year from the top 50 of the total 700 engineering colleges here. If these fresh graduates do not hone their job skills and look beyond the classroom, they will end up in teaching, State government jobs like revenue assistant or non-engineering fields like BPOs. Improving the quality of teachers in engineering colleges will improve the scenario.

ndian Mime Academy, which churns out hundreds of mime artistes both children and adults, is recruiting. Workshops are being held at Lamakaan where the best of the performers will be made part of the niche team. Along with performing across the country, the academy also holds mime training workshops for street children and personality development through mime classes in various schools in the City. “As of now, we are seven of us and we are intending to increase the number to 15. We are looking for people between the age group of 18 and 45. In order to excel in mime, one needs to be flexible so those who have learnt a dance form and have theatre experience can make a mark,” says Pallavi Varma, who was a Kathak dance and theatre performer before she ventured into mime. She says it’s only been 18 months since she started performing mime. “Mime is the mother of all art forms; in fact it is the essence

and the root of all expressions of art forms,” says the founder of the academy, Madhusudan Arusam, who is popularly known as Mime Madhu. “While learning other art forms, one is subconsciously also learning different facets of mime. A classical dancer can perform mime well too,” he says. Madhu says that he started the academy because he did not want students to struggle the way he did 23 years ago when he decided to master this art. “There weren’t many teachers available from whom I could learn mime. I wanted a change in this scenario,” he says. Apart from those who desire to learn the art, there are those who join these workshops to improve their leadership qualities. “I had a software engineer joining the workshop few days ago. He said he wanted to learn to be more assertive and improve his body language. Learning this art can bring about many changes in your personal life. Even in schools in the City, we hold workshops for kids where they can improve their personality through mime,” he says.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR KIDNEYS: PART I

Regulating life While most of us know the role kidneys play in the urinary system, the homeostatic function of the organ is often overlooked. Kidneys help regulate electrolyte levels, maintain acid-base balance, and regulate blood pressure in humans. 2007 MEDIVISUALS, INC.

Kidneys filter the blood passing through them for a number of reasons. They removes toxic components like urea and ammonia, which are eventually passed out of the body as urine. They keep the concentration of essential ions, like sodium and potassium, constant. They adjust the acidbase composition of the blood and keep the volume of water in the body at a constant.

s Chaya, 6, draws a rose on the dull-yellow wall, 10-yearold Raju is busy solving math equations, while Rahil, 14, is quietly filling the water cooler. These may be everyday school activities but what links the trio is that all of them are born to sex workers and their school’s address is GB Road, Delhi’s infamous red-light district. There are no big boards to welcome you to the school, called “Kat-Katha”, or the story of a puppet, as one enters GB Road. What had initially started in 2012 as an initiative to create recreational space for sex workers has now managed to build a “trust relationship” with their children — and is

aiming at redirecting their lives. “It took me a year to build a good relationship with these children. The process is still on because they don’t open up easily. It was important to have that rishta (relationship) first,” Kat-Katha founder Gitanjali Babbar told IANS. “Now, I want to seriously focus on these childrens’ studies so that they can get out of these brothels,” she added. The journey has never been smooth for the 26-year-old, who had to vacate three places in GB Road before she could move to the current address. But she continued to sustain the school, which runs purely on donations from friends and well-wishers. There were times when Babbar had no other option but to teach the children and their mothers in different brothels at

different times. But it was the overwhelming support from brothel owners that kept her going. The area houses 77 brothels, around 3,500 sex workers and 1,500 children. Babbar, who earlier worked as a programme officer with the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), said when she started, some of the children used to make abusive and threatening calls to her. “But times change and they realised that my intentions are honest,” she smiled. “The crime rate is high here. Most of the boys end up becoming pimps and girls get into the flesh trade. It is possible to change the trend,” she added. “For them to move on in life, they have to first move out from here. I am hopeful,” Babbar added. IANS

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

INVINCIBLE TEAM INDIA The Men in Blue triumphed in the tournament without losing even one match.

JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse BIRMINGHAM: India added the Champions Trophy title to the World Cup they won two years ago after seeing off England by five runs in a dramatic Champions Trophy final at Edgbaston on Sunday. Tournament hosts England, still to win a major one-day international title, appeared to have done the hard work in holding India to 129 for seven in a match reduced by rain to a 20 overs per side contest. But, chasing 130, they collapsed to 46 for four, before a partnership of 64 between former Ireland left-hander Eoin

Morgan (33) and Ravi Bopara (30), who’d earlier taken three for 20 with his medium-pacers, swung the match back their way. However, India seamer Ishant Sharma turned the match on its head by removing Morgan and Bopara, both with the aid of catches by Ravichandran Ashwin, off successive deliveries to leave England 110 for six in ther 18th over and needing 19 off the last 12 balls. That eventually became six off one ball and that proved too much for tailender James Tredwell as he failed to make contact against fellow off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Ravindra Jadeja was named man-of-the-match after making

India, who shared the 2002 Champions Trophy with Sri Lanka, were reduced to 66 for five before Kohli and Jadeja boosted the total. 33 not out and then taking two for 24 with his left-arm spin. India’s win left England still searching for their first major ODI trophy after defeats in three World Cup finals (1979, 1987 and 1992) and a loss to the West Indies at The Oval in the 2004 Champions Trophy final when they last staged this event.

If this was, as has been stated by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the last Champions Trophy, it certainly went out with a bang with India’s youthful side containing just three survivors — captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina — from the team that beat Sri Lanka in Mumbai to win the 2011 World Cup final. England’s reply suffered an early setback when captain Alastair Cook (two) was well caught in the slips for two by Ashwin off Umesh Yada. They were 28 for two when Jonathan Trott, on his Warwickshire home ground, was stumped by Dhoni off Ashwin

for 20. Joe Root then holed out cheaply off Ashwin before opener Ian Bell, like Trott a Warwickshire player, was stumped off Jadeja. It was a desperately close call but, after several minutes’ study, Australian third umpire Bruce Oxenford ruled in India’s favour, although Bell was clearly convinced there was enough doubt for the decision to go his way, and England were in trouble at 46 for four. England needed 59 off the final 36 balls but that target was reduced to 48 off 30 balls after Bopara launched Ishant Sharma over mid-wicket for six. Morgan then weighed in

Rising stars delight captain Dhoni BIRMINGHAM: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was thrilled by the performance of his youthful side after they snatched a five-run win over England in the Champions Trophy final at Edgbaston. In a match reduced by rain to 20 overs per side, World Cup holders India were restricted to 129 for seven after losing the toss in overcast conditions on Sunday. England, after some early stumbles with the bat, needed 20 to win off the last 16 balls with six wickets in hand, only to ‘choke’ in a manner more usually associated with South Africa. Ravindra Jadeja, the most successful bowler in the tournament with 12 wickets, was named man-of-the-match. Jadeja first made a rapid 33 not out, which saw him share a partnership of 47 with Virat Kohli (43), before taking two for 24 with his left-arm spin in front of an overwhelmingly pro-Indian capacity crowd. The 24-year-old was nicknamed

And that confidence was there for all to see after India were reduced to 66 for five batting first after losing the toss. “Jadeja is someone who keeps it

very simple," said Dhoni. “He just looks for the right area and the ball does the talking. The good part was he contributed with the bat, which I feel is very important because he’s someone who will have to bat at number seven. “Now what we have seen is you can’t play with six batsmen and five bowlers. You know, the seven number slot is very crucial," wicketkeeper-batsman Dhoni added. Meanwhile Jadeja said: “The (Edgbaston) wicket was slow and it was difficult to rotate the strike so myself and Virat Kohli built up a good partnership. “I enjoyed bowling on this wicket, the ball was gripping and I was bowling to my strength." India opener Shikhar Dhawan was named player of the tournament after scoring 363 runs in five matches, including two hundreds, at an average of 90.75 and an impressive strike-rate of 101.39. AFP

BIRMINGHAM: England captain Alastair Cook voiced confidence that his side can banish the pain of their Champions Trophy final loss to India by the time they begin the defence of the Ashes. England, still to win a global one-day international title after what was their fifth defeat in a final, were 110 for four come the 18th over at Edgbaston on Sunday chasing 130 after World Cup holders India made 129 for seven in a match reduced by rain from 50 to 20 overs per side. But Ishant Sharma took two wickets in two balls to

remove Eoin Morgan (33) and Ravi Bopara (30) after they had rescued England from the depths of 46 for four with a

stand of 64. That started a collapse that saw four wickets lost for three runs in eight balls, with tailender James Tredwell unable to hit the six off the final delivery of the match that would have given England victory. However, while Cook — who said Sunday’s match was his worst day as England captain, is set to feature in the Ashes the likes of Morgan and Bopara are not Test regulars. Meanwhile star batsman Kevin Pietersen, who missed the Champions Trophy with a knee injury, was on course to return in the first Test against Australia at Trent Bridge on July 10.
