A tale of two ‘husbands’ A sick man tries to marry his wife to another man who proves a villain and sexually exploits her for three years before throwing her out.

Srinivas came to Mahesh and Jhansi’s home in an intoxicated state and assaulted her.

HYDERABAD: Truth, it is truly said, is sometimes stranger than fiction. Police have booked a married man who gave false assurance to a married woman that he had filed for divorce and would then marry her. He sexually abused her for three years and refused to marry her. The strange saga of Mahesh and Jhansi, aged 36 and 34, of Vijayawada begins a couAROUND THE

ple of years ago when he suffered a heart attack. After a second attack, he was a physical wreck. They moved to Hyderabad so that she could find a job as Mahesh was nearly bed-ridden. She was working and Mahesh was confined to home. Whatever savings they had were spent on treatment and they were reduced to penury. After a while, Mahesh, who loves his wife, told her not to waste her life on him since he is a wreck and would not be able to

take care of her. He suggested re-marriage if a suitable man came along. Jhansi, it is said, was not averse to the idea. Meanwhile, she came in touch with one Srinivas who runs an organisation in Bowenpally. Both became more than friends and he used to visit her home. According to the complaint Mahesh and Jhansi filed with

the Bowenpally police, Srinivas cooked up a story of his wife divorcing him soon and being free to marry Jhansi. This way, Jhansi was persuaded to move in with him in a separate apartment, where they started living like husband and wife. Three years passed and there was no talk of marriage. Differences arose between the couple. Recently, she was thrown out of the apartment and was told he would never marry her. She came back to Mahesh. The other day, Srinivas came to their (Mahesh and Jhansi’s) home in an intoxicated condition and asked Jhansi to come out with him. She refused. Srinivas is said to have whipped out a knife and attacked Jhansi. Mahesh raised an alarm and neighbours gathered to help subdue Srinivas. But despite being a trespasser in Mahesh’s home and attempting to attack his wife, the Bowenpally police have not arrested Srinivas. They are still investigating.

Jailed China rocker triggers debate Wu Hongfei was detained on suspicion of ‘fabricating fake terrorism information’; she could get five years’ jail. BEIJING: A Chinese singer who was detained for threatening to bomb government offices after a man detonated a device at Beijing airport has triggered a debate about free speech. The airport attacker Ji Zhongxing — a wheelchairbound former driver who said he had failed for years to win redress after a police beating left him paralysed — garnered some sympathy after the explosion destroyed his hand and injured an officer earlier this month. Hours later rock singer Wu Hongfei said on Sina Weibo, a social network service akin to Twitter, that she wanted to blow up the housing authority and a neighbourhood committee in the capital. She was detained days later on suspicion of “fabricating fake terrorism information", a crime which carries a maximum sentence of five years, the China Daily said. places," the Beijing Times quoted him as saying. Detaining her for an “inappropriate Weibo comment has huge significance for defining freedom of speech versus illegal behaviour on the Internet", he added. Bees attack couple, kill horses in US WASHINGTON: Thousands of angry bees attacked a couple and stung their two horses to death in Texas, a report said Sunday. The woman was stung about 200 times and her boyfriend 50. The two horses were stung so much that they did not survive. The couple were, however, able to call the emergency number 911 and firefighters arrived with special gear and a foam substance to clear the bees. The couple were sent to a hospital. The bee hive was found to be in a shed in the backyard of the couple’s rented property and housed an estimated 30,000 bees. The report said the bees are being tested to find out whether they are “Africanised” bees, also known as “killer bees” for their aggressive behaviour. IANS

Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman said the language in the manual, which is used to train the military in security procedures, was “heavy-handed” and needed to be changed. “My view is that the reference to investigative journalists should be removed from this order,” he said in a statement. “It is inappropriate and heavyhanded.” The review comes after the Sunday Star-Times revealed that the manual, which was written in 2003, defined three “subversive” groups as a security risk — hostile intelligence services, extreme organisations and investigative journalists. arunyellamaty@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Recently, a popular five-star hotel hosted a Friday night party with a East European DJ playing that evening. The passes sold for close to `2,000, and they advertised that the lady DJ mixing is the ‘World’s Number 8, Super Model DJ’. She turned out to be a nobody. Many who rushed to watch her play were furious, upset and

disappointed to know that the hotel and organisers bluffed them. The DJ was not even moderately popular but a random local DJ from East Europe. S Shreya, a student said, “It was disappointing, the hotel and organisers bluffed and brought some nobody DJ, saying she was a star. I am not going to come back here again.” Another party goer, Rahul Kumar, a student, expressed his disappointment as well, “I was told a super model was playing.

When I heard the music, she was just playing songs of different artists; she has no music of her own. She surely is not a big DJ.” The funny part is that when we asked this East European DJ to share her experience of being a top-ranked, super model DJ, she was surprised and said, “Me, I am not any super model or No. 8 DJ.” She just toured four to five cities before coming to Hyderabad. This is not the first such incident. In recent times, many DJs from various countries are being called in to star hotels, saying they are top shots and so are raking in a lot of money. Talking to one of the event organisers from the City, D Kumar, he said, “Many organisers want to sell tickets and make money from their events. If a local DJ plays, the ticket prices are very low and hardly people attend. Due to this, many organisers call foreign DJs and charge

a hefty amount from party lovers, saying a top DJ is in town and fool the public.” He adds, “There are also a lot of DJs who call themselves big celebrities, but it’s important for people to go online and recheck where and on whom they are spending their money.” The City has hosted quite a lot of parties where musicians from Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Australia and many more countries have come and played. They charged close to `2,000-`3,000 for every party. Raj Kumar (name changed on request), a club manager, said, “A month ago, we had organised a big event and charged people `2,000. We were told by an event organiser that the DJ was from Spain and very popular. After the event, we got to know that the DJ was from Goa, and was brought here to make some easy money. Since then, we have made our rules very tight. This happens a lot not only in Hyderabad, but everywhere.” So next time you shell out massive amounts for a party, do your research first.

It was disappointing. The hotel and organisers bluffed us and brought some nobody DJ, saying she was a star. I am not going to come back here again. S Shreya Student

LUCKNOW: A dead body was fished out of a drain with the help of a JCB digging machine and carried to hospital piled up on garbage in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad. Two policemen have been suspended, an official said. The incident took place Sunday in the Nalbandan area of the town when people spotted the naked dead body of a youngster lying in a big drain. Policemen came and asked for a JCB machine of the municipal corporation, used to clean drains and lift garbage from various city dumps.

The JCB was then pressed into service to lift out the dead body, which was identified by Jitendra Joshi, resident of Chandravargate, as that of his 18-year-old son Shivam. The teenager had gone missing for the last four days, the inconsolable Joshi told policemen and requested them to call an ambulance to place the body with some dignity. The pleas of the father and other residents went unheard and till the district hospital, the body was taken on the machine’s plougher along with garbage. SP Rakesh Singh suspended two policemen — Man Singh and Vijaypal Singh of Rasoolpur station. “This type of behaviour is completely unacceptable and we have taken action against the policemen,” he said. RAINS FOR EVER

Oddly enough, lifelong residents of Mawsynram, a small cluster of hamlets in Meghalaya state have little idea that their scenic home holds a Guinness record for the highest average annual rainfall of 11,873 millimeters.

The reason

LIFE ‘DRIPS’ IN MAWSYNRAM AMMU KANNAMPILLY Agence France-Presse MAWSYNRAM: Deep in India’s northeast, villagers use grass to sound-proof their huts from deafening rain, clouds are a familiar sight inside homes and a suitably rusted sign tells visitors they are in the “wettest place on earth". Oddly enough, lifelong residents of Mawsynram, a small cluster of hamlets in Meghalaya state have little idea that their scenic home holds a Guinness record for the highest average annual rainfall of 11,873 millimeters (467 inches). “Really, this is the wettest place in the world? I didn’t know that," Bini Kynter, a great-grandmother who estimates she must be “nearly 100 years old” tells AFP. Meteorologists say Mawsynram’s location, close to Bangladesh and the Bay of Bengal is the reason the tiny cluster receives so much rain. “What happens is that whenever any moisture gathers over the Bay of Bengal, it causes pre-

cipitation over Mawsynram, leading to a heavy, long monsoon season," Sunit Das of the Indian Meteorological Department told AFP. While annual monsoon rains lashed the national capital last week, causing traffic chaos and flooding at the international airport, such problems are mild for Mawsynram. Just thirty years ago, Mawsynram had no paved roads, no running water and no electricity, making its six-month long monsoon an insufferable experience for its mostly impoverished residents. connecting the hillside hamlets. Rainwater still seeps into the mud huts occupied by some villagers. And, while most homes now have electricity, outages are commonplace. Every winter the people of Mawsynram spend months preparing for the wet season ahead, anticipating nonstop rain and no sunshine for several days at a time. They repair their battered roofs. They cut and hoard firewood —a source of light and fuel for cooking. They buy and store foodgrains, since few will venture out to shop during the wettest months between May and July. blocks and finally dried on rooftops across Mawsynram. According to Prelian Pdah, a grandmother of nine, this makes the grass stronger and more likely to survive a downpour. Pdah, 70, spends part of the winter and all of the monsoon season making bamboo baskets, brooms and knups which are bought by visiting businessmen who sell them around the state. “I don’t like the heavy rainfall, it’s boring to stay indoors all day. It’s annoying," she tells AFP. Although few Mawsynram residents seemed to know or care about their record-holder status, the right to the Guinness title has been hotly disputed by a nearby town, Cherrapunji, which used to lay claim to that honour. In sleepy Mawsynram, many find the record-setting monsoon downright depressing. “There’s no sun, so if you don’t have electricity it’s very dark indoors, even during the day," Moonstar Marbaniang, the pyjama-clad headman of Mawsynram says.

Those who have second homes elsewhere flee to escape the season. Others catch up on their sleep, according to Marbaniang, whose first name suggests one of the more striking legacies of colonial rule in India’s northeast. Historians say the past presence of British soldiers and missionaries in this region has seen many people name their children after random English words or famous historical figures, often with no knowledge of what they might mean. State capital Shillong’s former nickname as the “Scotland of the East” also goes some way to explain the popularity of tartan scarves and shawls, even in the most far-flung and underdeveloped villages of Meghalaya. Somewhat fittingly for a state whose name means “the abode of the clouds” in the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit, it is not unusual for clouds to drift through people’s homes in Mawsynram, leaving a wet film on their furniture.

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA: The driver of a train that hurtled off the rails in Spain was charged Sunday with 79 counts of reckless homicide and released on bail after being questioned by a judge. The judge ordered him to report to court every week and forbade him from leaving Spain for six months, the High Court of Galicia, which is leading the investigation, said in a statement. He also banned him from driving trains for six months. AVELLINO: At least 36 people were killed after a coach carrying pilgrims, including some children, plunged off a motorway flyover in southern Italy, rescue services said Monday. Another 11 people were injured, they added, in what is already one of the worst coach accidents in Europe in recent years. Rescue workers said they had pulled 33 bodies from the wreckage after Sunday evening’s crash near the town of Avellino in the Campania region. They found the bodies of another three people underneath the coach. They had been thrown from the vehicle as it plunged 30 metres (100 feet) down a slope. Photographers at the scene described how fire crews raced to find any remaining survivors, as the victims were laid out under white sheets along the roadside. “Looking down from the overpass, the scene of the tragedy: some 30 bodies covered by white sheets, lined up along the roadside,” said Cesare Abbate of Italy’s ANSA news agency, before the toll was revised upwards. From time to time, rescue workers called for “a moment of silence” to listen for signs of life from the wreckage, he said. The accident happened on a flyover on the A16 highway between Naples and Bari, near Avellino in the Monteforte Irpino district about 50 kilometres, (30 miles) east of Naples. It hit several cars before plunging off the flyover and there were reports that some of those in the seven or eight cars caught up in the chaos had also been injured. Italian media reports said the place where the accident happened was at a particularly dangerous downward slope on the road that is already an accident black spot. It was not yet exactly clear

how many were on the coach, but local media reported that about 50 people were on board, many of them children. The emergency services had rushed three badly injured children, four women and two men to hospitals in Avellino and nearby Naples, media reports said. HECTOR VELASCO Agence France-Presse QUITO, July 27, 2013 (AFP) - Sent to a center offering to “cure” her attraction to women, Denisse Freire was raped and tortured — in a practice Ecuadoran authorities admit has been tolerated for too long. The country of 15.8 million people has at least 80 unlicensed drug and alcohol rehab clinics, many that are also used for anti-gay conversion therapy, Health Minister Carina Vance, who is openly gay, said. Two people, admitted for addiction issues, died last year at the clandestine centers, she told foreign reporters at a press conference, adding that authorities have begun to crack down. At these centers, “we have reports of physical attacks, the use of ice water on inmates,” Vance said. “We have lesbians who have reported what the clinics called ‘sex therapy,’ but which consists of being raped by men,” the minister said. Freire, now 25, was just 15 when her mother discovered her in her room with a female schoolmate. Outraged, she sent her daughter to a “Christian camp” in a remote area in southeastern Ecuador. There, Freire said, “they tortured me with electric shocks, didn’t let me bathe for three days, gave me almost nothing to eat, hit me a lot, hung me by my feet. “They told me it was for my own good.” There were also sexual punish-

ments, all aimed at ridding the young girl of her homosexuality. The center was nominally a evangelical Christian rehabilitation clinic for drug and alcohol addiction. But Freire said she was there with four other young people — all because they were gay. After two months, Freire escaped. Her case was not an isolated one. Authorities say the inhumane practice is a wide-ranging problem that has ensnared even government officials — such as the health ministry official who was recently subject of a criminal complaint after it emerged she owned a clandestine clinic offering therapy against homosexuality. “We are talking here about a mafia, a network that operates nationally in each of the provinces, which are violating human rights,” Health Minister Vance said. Since March 2012, authorities

have closed 18 rehab clinics: 15 for human rights violations and three for violations of health standards, the ministry said. Still, more clinics remain. In June, Zulema Constante, a 22year-old psychology student, escaped a clinic in the eastern city of Tena, where she said her family had forcibly admitted her to cure her of homosexuality. She was handcuffed and locked in a straightjacket. “I had to pray, they gave me food poisoning, forced me to clean toilets with my hands, and told me I was wrong to be a lesbian,” she told reporters. The clinic is owned by a health official in the region. Constante’s girlfriend, Cynthia Rodriguez, launched a social media campaign to report the case, building public pressure that allowed her to be set free after three weeks. But activists say too many complaints are unsuccessful. “Why?” asks Leah Burbano of the Lesbian Women and Woman Movement. Because the people forcing the victims into the clinics “are family and that creates an emotional weight.” “But this is not a struggle between parents and children. It’s a struggle against these clinics.” Ecuadoran law authorizes forced treatment for addicts with approval from a judge. But health minister Vance emphasized in no case is the forced treatment allowed to seek to “cure” homosexuality.

ATHENS: Foreign tourists are finding their way back to Greece’s islands and ancient ruins, offering a rare boost to an economy contracting for the sixth year running. Arrivals are on the up again after dismal 2012 figures but domestic tourism is at a standstill and Greece’s second-tier destinations are more deserted than ever. The Association of Greek tourism enterprises (SETE) this month announced a 10 percent rise in foreign arrivals at airports for the first half of 2013. The Bank of Greece in turn announced that in the year running up to May 2013, tourism revenue had soared 38.5 percent and foreign arrivals 24 percent. It also said that tourism revenue grew 15 percent between January and May.

Head of SETE Andreas Andreadis said that improved political stability compared to 2012, a drop in prices caused by the economic crisis as well as the cancellation of holidays to Turkey and Tunisia all contributed to the recovery. AROUND THE

POPE IN BRAZIL

‘Field of faith’ turns desolate land The Campus Fidei (Field of Faith) was supposed to host the finale of weeklong World Youth Day — an all-out prayer vigil and a Sunday mass with the head of the church. But rains flooded the terrain and forced authorities to shift it to Copacabana beach, known for bikinis than religion.

JAVIER TOVAR Agence France-Presse RIO DE JANEIRO: For months, a humble Rio de Janeiro neighborhood toiled for the arrival of Pope Francis and more than a million pilgrims, clearing trees, draining marshes and building a giant stage. But, after days of punishing rain, the pontiff and his Catholic flock never came to Guaratiba, leaving it with an eerily empty field that has become a gargantuan mud pit. The Campus Fidei (“Field of Faith”) was supposed to host the finale of weeklong World Youth Day, a Catholic event capped by an all-out prayer vigil and a Sunday mass with the head of the church. But the non-stop rain flooded the terrain and forced Rio authorities to switch to Plan B: legendary Copacabana beach, a site better known for bikinis than religion. A sign welcoming the faithful still hangs in the neighborhood on the western outskirts of the tropical city. Residents are measuring the mountains of food and drinks they had purchased to sell back to the pilgrims — and the debt they’ve been left with. One man installed 10 individual toilets with doors like a public restroom in the basement of his home -- a $5,000 investment that has now been flushed down

the drain. “What do I do now? I would have bought myself a car or fixed my house with that money,” said the man, who refused to give his name. “Everybody’s in debt.” Leila Santo Oliveira, a 43year-old restaurant owner, has dozens of water bottles stacked up in a corner. “I had ordered a thousand

Marcelo da Silva Gomes, 39, had hoped to sell 800 roast chickens in front of his home. “I never bought so many,” he said, staring at the countless packs in his fridge. Losing money is not the only disappointment for the residents of Guaratiba. Many had dreamed of seeing the 76-yearold Argentine, Latin America’s first pope, up close.

“The poor won’t see anything. This is just for the rich,” said Ida da Silva, 79. “The best thing we had was the chance to see the pope here, amid the poor, but he went to Copacabana.” From her home’s back patio, which is flooded from the dredging, the massive white stage with a towering cross lies vacant in the distance like a sailing ship that has run aground in the 300hectare (740-acre) quagmire.

A group of pilgrims from southern Brazil arrived in Guaratiba on Friday. They had found lodging there a while ago but now had to take a two-hour bus ride to downtown Rio, 60 kilometers (37 miles) to the east, for the vigil. “We were told that Guaratiba was very badly planned,” said Maria de las Gracas Piontkievicz, 47, carrying a sleeping bag.“Where there’s rain, thunder or lightning, we will see the

pope.” The bog in Guaratiba was among a series of logistical missteps for Rio authorities. Images of the pope’s car getting swarmed by joyous pilgrims upon his arrival on Monday and a subway metro breakdown have also made headlines. Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes took the blame for the problems, saying he gave the city’s organization of the event a grade that was “closer to zero than to 10.”

Pope’s visit exposes Cup prep chinks PIERRE AUSSEILL Agence France-Presse RIO DE JANEIRO: A series of fiascos during Pope Francis’s visit this week have raised fresh concerns about Brazil’s ability to stage next year’s World Cup and the 2016 Rio summer Olympics. The pontiff’s first overseas trip to join hundreds of thousands of young pilgrims at World Youth Day, a major Catholic festival, has turned into a daily ordeal for Rio authorities. “If you ask me to grade the organization of World Youth Day (WYD), I would say we are closer to zero than to 10,” embattled Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes told CBN radio.

t is Many dream of entrepreneurship, few venture into one and fewer still succeed. What makes an entrepreneur or an enterprise successful? It is a combination of internal and external aspects. Internal forces like persistence, extreme passion and agility, and external forces like market reality and acceptance matter in the success of a start up. “An entrepreneur should have persistence and should possess extreme passion in what he does. The odds are always against the start up. Even with all this dedication and devotion, the market may not accept the product. In such a scenario, one should understand the market reality and pave way for something else or shut it down. However, that doesn’t mean the end of the journey for the entrepreneur. His life is not a flop but just that the particular attempt did not work,” opined Satya Krisha Ganni, a serial entrepreneur and founder of Martmobi. When asked about the most important component for a start up, he says, “Fundamentally, there has to be value in what entrepreneurs create. There is no point to venture without identifying the value that it would create to the market. “Start ups should be agile and that is their biggest strength as compared to established businesses. For instance, the big companies have hierarchy, approval processes and need to understand the market before bringing out their product, which takes a lot of time. For instance, big company may take months to test something. However, a start up can actually finish it in two days.

Domestic as well as overseas investments have plunged in the recent quarters due to high interest rates and widespread corruption in the general administration, says chief of a leading industry chamber. “The lacklustre investments and slowing industrial growth are already showing the impact on employment situation. Job generation is one of the biggest concerns for the country, given the addition of 10-12 million new workers every year to the workforce,” Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) president Naina Lal Kidwai, told IANS.

In this fast-paced technology environment, the biggest weapon the start ups have is agility.” “However, the opportunity of agility is not exploited by start ups to a great extent. Irrespective of the value the product creates, start ups are slow in execution. Very few people like Jack Dorsey, Ganesh Krishnan or Naveen Tewari are exceptionally great executors. These qualities are very much missing in young entrepreneurs. Whatever the case, they need to get things done and be agile. Either it is in terms of partnership, product development or in alliances. One has to prepare a checklist and finish the work at all costs without postponing it.” Market validation is another aspect that start ups should not ignore in the process; he goes on to explain, saying, “Agility will help them to quickly get the product or prototype out and to take constant feedback from the market. An entrepreneur has to check whether there is a demand

for the product and whether the customer will pay for it. Without having answers for these questions there is no point in building it.” “If you were agile, you would consume fewer resources. Today, nobody is interested in an idea on paper. They need to see at least a mock-up to co-relate and give feedback on. However, if you are developing a product for consumers, you need to have a decent landing page and create enough noise and get sign ups.

For instance, Dropmyemail, a Singaporean company got around 5 lakh sign ups within a few weeks of its launch,” he said. Traction and revenues are the important aspects that a start up should count on. When asked which is more important, he said, “If I have to choose one in those two, I would consider traction over revenues. For instance, Facebook and Twitter did not make money in the initial days but nobody was bothered because of the traction that they were gaining. “If you have numerous sign ups every day, eventually the company can look at ways to monetise it. Getting people on something every day and frequently is very difficult. “Start ups have to be lean and cautious while spending. If the product has intrinsic value, people will come without having to do heavy marketing, even if online. Redbus and Flipkart are successful examples to prove this case.”

KOREAN SHOWDOWN South Korea sent its “final” proposal Monday for talks with North Korea over the fate of a shuttered joint industrial zone, officials said. The offer came after six recent rounds of talks aimed at reviving the Seoul-invested Kaesong complex — suspended since April — produced little progress. The South’s unification ministry said its proposal was sent through the border truce village of Panmunjom, calling for an early reply from the North. “We once again urge North Korea to make a right choice for the normalisation of Kaesong and inter-Korean relations,” unification ministry spokesman Kim Hyung-Suk told reporters.

rriving at a Christian Dior fashion show in Paris surrounded by a gaggle of photographers and minders, Korean star Gianna Jun quickly eclipsed the already seated Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence. One of the best known faces in Asia following a string of box office smashes, the actress is one of an elite group of bankable names attracting the attention of the fashion world. Designers have long looked to Hollywood stars to help sell their collections — but as the spending power of consumers in countries such as China and South Korea grows, it’s now the turn of Asia’s A-listers. Taiwanese model and actress Lin Chi-ling was also in Paris for the couture shows where she was given the red carpet treatment at Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel show. At a time when couture houses are increasingly winning new customers in countries from China to Singapore, Lagerfeld underscored the East’s importance with a show contrasting the “crumbling” old world with a new world represented by a futuristic imaginary Asian city. Raf Simons’ multicultural show for Christian Dior, meanwhile, was also a clear pitch to customers in new markets. The Belgian designer, who notably put models from all corners of the globe on the catwalk, said the collection showed Dior “not just being about Paris and France, but about the rest of the world” too.

T

here was a time when your local post office would mainly sell stamps and deliver letters. No longer. To counteract the turmoil brought on by emails and text messages, postal services worldwide have reinvented themselves, taking on the technological revolution that once looked to cripple them. Traditional snail mail service has dropped sharply in recent years, though emerging countries are a notable exception. According to the Universal Postal Union (UPU), global letter- and light parcel delivery dropped by 3.7 percent in 2011 from a year earlier, and by 5.1 percent when just counting Europe and the former Soviet Union. And the death of letter-writing has forced postal services to either catch on new trends or disappear. Earlier this month, Britain announced plans to privatise more than half of Royal Mail in a bid to transform it into a modern communication business. “This is logical, it is a commercial decision designed to put Royal Mail’s future onto a long

term sustainable basis,” Britain’s Business Secretary Vince Cable said. “It is consistent with developments elsewhere in Europe where privatised operators in Austria, Germany and Belgium produce profit margins far higher than the Royal Mail but have continued to provide high quality and expanding services.” Amid the dwindling delivery numbers for letters and large packages, there is hope: parcels weighing less than two kilogrammes (4.4 pounds). They “have seen an incredible growth thanks to Internet shopping,” said Wendy Eitan of UPU. The key, she said, is for postal services to take advantage of their reputed reliability and the trust they instill. “In the eyes of the public, the postal service remains the trusted third party to certify electronic correspondence or to arrange the return of goods” linked to e-commerce, she said. Online shopping, and the millions of parcels it generates, has become a boon for a new type of postal industry. One of those players is Germany’s Deutsche Post, which is investing 750 million euros ($990 million) in expanding its package delivery network by adding 20,000 new reception points. Similarly, PostNord —

Sweden and Denmark’s merged postal services — is seeing a turnaround in its business thanks to its focus on online parcel delivery. The same story can be told in Spain, where traditional mail delivery has plunged some 30 percent in the past five years, and the national Correos has its mind set on “developing parcel activities with specific solutions and the value added by electronic commerce”. By 2020, Correos is determined to work along a business model “in which revenues do not exclusively come from the traditional postal business,” a spokesman told AFP. France’s La Poste has taken it a step further. Aside from identifying parcels as “it’s primary sector of development”, it has also launched more than a dozen pilot projects exploring

the possibilities of delivering medication to the elderly and to offer meter-readings for gas and electricity usage. Bank operations and mobile telephony are other venues being explored. Italy’s Poste Italiane today runs some six million deposit accounts and has sold around three million SIM cards for mobile telephones. In Argentina, the Correo Oficial now offers the sale of mobile phone top-ups as well as tax payment services, describing itself as a modern organisation that offers “complex operations”. In 2015, Brazil’s postal service plans to start selling mobile phone usage, with “the idea to have our own telephone brand.” In some countries, the postal services have dared to stray off the beaten track even further. EDITORIALS CNG SHORTAGE AFFECTS AUTOS

A

s there is an inadequate supply of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in the State capital, many autorickshaw drivers are looking at other conversion options to run their CNG-operated vehicles. APSRTC converted 30 CNG buses into diesel-operated ones in the Greater Hyderabad zone after losing revenue due to short supply of CNG. The corporation spent `15,000 on each bus for the conversion in March. Around 2,000 autorickshaws run on CNG in the capital and many drivers are now contemplating converting them into LPG-operated vehicles, despite conversion cost. While LPG costs `46 per litre, CNG is sold at `52 per kg. One kg of CNG is equal to two litres of LPG. With just 12 CNG fuel stations in the City and its suburbs, serpentine queues of autorickshaws waiting for fuel refill, is common. Drivers who hire autos are affected as they lose `500 daily, forcing them to opt for the LPG kit of `13,000. Oil companies need to improve supply to enable fuel stations to fulfil their need of 1,800kg of CNG every day.

The contest took place among the top B-schools in the City and saw over 75 registered teams of four members each. The preliminary rounds of the contest took place last week in the respective colleges. One team from each of the five colleges was shortlisted for the finale. The participant colleges were The Indian School of Business (ISB), ICFAI Business School (IBS), Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM), Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) and Institute of Management Technology (IMT).

Not only is the event the first live digital marketing casestudy contest, it is also the first time ever that crowd-sourced ideas and solutions at the Bschool level will be implemented on real projects. Working on the challenges of these live casestudies, the contesting students have got an exposure to sophisticated digital marketing strategies at a global level. The final round of the contest comprised a 30-minute presentation by each team on the case analyses followed by a 10minute Questions and Answers session each. The participants were asked to recommend the most optimal digital marketing channel mix that can be used by Lenovo.com to maximise return on advertising spend for this year’s holiday season. The students had to wear the hat of Lenovo’s Digital Marketing Manager (North America) with a multi-million dollar budget at their disposal and allocate the company’s

media spend based on “real data” pertaining to the last 18 months. The holiday season in North America is the time between Thanksgiving Day and Christmas when dramatic spike in sales is experienced by retailers due to a surge in consumer demand. The team from Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) won Clix 2013. UNDERSTANDING THE THROAT: PART 1

Eating, drinking, speaking... your throat is an important conduit for several functions. Consisting of the pharynx and larynx, the throat is considered in the same breath as the ear and nose, especially when it comes to medical problems. The components

19

Larynx

T

he larynx is commonly called the voice box and deals with breathing and vocalisation. The vocal cords are found in the larynx and they help manipulate pitch and volume. Sound is generated in the larynx, and the force of expiration from the lungs determines the volume. During swallowing, the backward motion of the tongue forces the epiglottis over the glottis opening to prevent swallowed material from entering the larynx which leads to the lungs; the larynx is also pulled upwards to assist this process. Stimulation of the larynx by ingested matter produces a strong cough reflex to protect the lungs.

DEEP THROAT Throat trivia

part from the pharynx and larynx, the throat also has important blood vessels, the trachea and the oesophagus. All the parts are involved in either the respiratory or digestive systems; the pharynx is part of both. The throat is important for vocalisation and sound modulation as well.

n

The tonsils and the adenoids are bunches of lymph nodes that swell to help fight ear, nose and throat infections, especially in young children. They can be removed if they swell too much.

n

The trachea is lined with cilia, which clears fluids and particles out of the airway so that they stay out of the lungs.

Pharynx

n

Most sore throats have infectious disease origins, but some can result from breathing in dry, cold air through the mouth (for example, during the winter) or from having a foreign object stuck in the throat (for example, a fish or chicken bone).

n

Most sore throats are caused by viruses. Many occur at the beginning of a cold, when runny noses drain down the back of the throat and irritate it.

n

The hyoid bone and the clavicle are the only bones located in the throat of mammals.

A

T

he pharynx is divided into three parts — nasopharynx, oropharynx and laryngopharynx. The nasopharynx lies above the mouth cavity, and is connected to the nose and ear. A lot of upper respiratory tract infections affect it. Because both air and food pass through the oropharynx, there is a flap called the epiglottis which closes over the glottis to prevent aspiration.

Chile in turmoil over abortion

The debate has been stirred up again when a 11-year-old girl, who got pregnant after being raped, was denied the right to an abortion.

A

round 100 abortion rights protesters stormed Chile’s Santiago Cathedral, damaging walls inside the building and disrupting service before clashing with police. The trouble flared late Thursday after hardline members of a largely peaceful demonstration of 7,000 split away from the main protest and rushed into the cathedral. Thousands took to the streets Thursday evening to march in support of the legalisation of abortion in Chile. The march was organised by local pro-choice advocacy groups, in the wake of the

story of Belén, an 11-year-old pregnant girl that caused an international media firestorm. Police later made two arrests in connection with the vandalism. The assault on the cathedral was roundly condemned by Chilean government officials and members of the Catholic church on Friday. “I wish to express our absolute rejection of such acts,” Chile’s President Sebastian Pinera said, vowing that government forces would “use the full force of the law against these delinquents”. The head of the Catholic Church in Chile, Archbishop Ricardo Ezzati condemned the

acts as “very serious”. Both the archdiocese and city of Santiago have filed legal complaints against those responsible for the damage. Abortion was banned in Catholic-dominated Chile by former dictator Augusto Pinochet. However several feminist organisations and politicians, including the socialist candidate for November 17 elections, Michelle Bachelet, have protested in favour of abortion being legal in cases of rape or when the mother’s life is deemed to be at risk. Chile’s legislature has been unable to form a consensus on abortion in a deeply conservative country. AFP

eil Patrick Harris admits that it took a while for him to adjust to being a dad to twins Harper and Gideon. “The first year with them was complicated," he says in an interview with USA Weekend. “They were crying a lot." But as the toddlers approach their third birthday in October, it’s a whole different ball game. “The older they get, the more I love being a dad. Now that they’re talking, I’m really loving the camp counselor end of parenting," he says. “I’m all about reasoning. If they fall and are okay but crying, David [Burtka, his partner] will be the hugger, and I’ll be the ‘Show me where it hurts; let’s talk about it’ one. I come from a family of lawyers, so explanation is crucial." But the 40-year-old also loves playing with them! “We do circus tricks together," says the Smurfs 2 and How I Met Your Mother star, who’s president of a private magicians club in LA and has a “Magic Room” in his home. And when he and his kids aren’t hanging out in their backyard pool — “They’re remarkable swimmers," he reveals — he’s cherishing the more peaceful times. “I love reading books to them… I use different voices," says Neil, who his kids call “Poppa." “I like moments of quiet connection — like giving them back scratches."

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

SWIMMING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

AMERICA’S CUP

Yang, Missy claim golds China’s Sun Yang and US’s Missy Franklin got off to great starts at the world championships. RYLAND JAMES BARCELONA: China’s Sun Yang proved he has few peers in the distance freestyle events on Sunday, while US star Missy Franklin claimed the first of what could be eight golds at swimming’s world championships. The 21-year-old Sun won the world men’s 400m freestyle gold to complete the set of major titles in the event, 12 months after winning the Olympic crown. Just as he did in the London 2012 final, the 21-yearold Chinese dominated early on in Barcelona to add the 400m world title to the 800m and 1500m freestyle golds he won two years ago in Shanghai “The 400m is a very important event and I completed my goal," said Sun, who has moved to Hong Kong in the wake of a fallout he had concerning his girlfriend, an air stewardess, with his previous coach. “I overcame many problems and proved myself, I hope to have an even better performance in my other events," he said as he prepares to start the defence of his 800m freestyle title in Tuesday’s heats. The 17-year-old Ye, who won 200 and 400m IM gold Olympic medals last year,

sparked controversy when she swam the final leg of her 400m triumph in a faster time than men’s winner Ryan Lochte at London 2012. The USA claimed two world titles on Sunday as 16year-old Katie Ledecky just missed the women’s 400m freestyle world record on her way to winning gold, finishing more than two and a half seconds ahead of her rivals.

The teenager, who enjoyed a shock win in the women’s 800m freestyle at the Olympics, just missed out on breaking the four-year-old world record. “I really wasn’t expecting to go that fast, that wasn’t my focus. I just wanted to get the gold medal," said Ledecky, who will also race in the 800 and 1500m. The Americans kept on a

role as Franklin swam the first leg to lead the USA to the women’s 4x100m freestyle gold. Franklin, who won four golds at London 2012, is bidding to become the first swimmer — male or female — to win eight gold medals at a world championships, a feat not even 18-time Olympic gold medallist Michael Phelps achieved. Kiwis sweep ahead in Cup The Kiwi crew had already clinched a points victory in the round-robin series against Luna Rossa and the idled Swedish entry Artemis. SAN FRANCISCO: Team New Zealand completed a sweep of five America’s Cup round-robin challenger races against Luna Rossa on Sunday, defeating the Italian boat by three minutes and 21 seconds. The Kiwi crew had already clinched a points victory in the round-robin series against Luna Rossa and the idled Swedish entry Artemis and will now face one of them in the Louis Vuitton Cup challenger final next month. It was only the fourth race involving two boats, all of them won by Team New Zealand over Luna Rossa. The Italians forfeited one race to the Kiwis and Artemis, stunned in May by a training crash that killed crewman Andrew Simpson and destroyed their first AC72 catamaran, are working to have their boat ready to debut next month against Luna Rossa in hope of reaching the Louis Vuitton Cup challenger final. The winners of the challenger final will face defenders Oracle Team USA in the America’s Cup finals in September. On a seven-leg course over 15.27 nautical miles, Team New Zealand led by seven seconds.

HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX REVIEW

Lewis dedicates win to Nicole It was his emotional post-race dedication to former Pussycat Doll singer Scherzinger, from whom he split earlier in the summer, which dominated the event’s aftermath.

BUDAPEST: Heartbroken Lewis Hamilton on Sunday dedicated his victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, his first win as a Mercedes driver, to his former girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger. Hamilton, having started from pole position, kept his title hopes alive with a comfortable win over Kimi Raikkonen, in a Lotus, and triple world champion, Sebastian Vettel, in a Red Bull. But it was his emotional postrace dedication to former Pussycat Doll singer Scherzinger, from whom he split earlier in the summer, which dominated the event’s aftermath. “Winning is just the greatest,

of course,"Z said Hamilton, whose victory was his first since leaving McLaren to race for Mercedes this year and the 22nd of his career.

Hamilton, having started from pole position, kept his title hopes alive with a comfortable win over Kimi Raikkonen. “But I feel like...the thought on my mind through the whole race was of someone who is special to me and I wanted to dedicate it to her...”

Asked if that person was Scherzinger, he nodded. Then, asked if he had struggled with his emotions in preparing for the race, he said: “Yes, it’s been the toughest couple of months of my life. “Coming into the race, my parents were concerned for me and just wanted to try to lift my spirits and help me keep my focus on, and clearly it’s not affected my driving. “I’ve been driving great and I’ve been very happy with how I’ve been qualifying for the last couple of races, but it just doesn’t feel the same nowadays. A couple of years ago we were here together and I think I won, so I have great memories.” AFP

BRANDT VALUE TOO MUCH FOR DUSTIN

OAKVILLE: Brandt Snedeker fired a two-under par 70 on Sunday and held off a late charge by fellow American Dustin Johnson to win the $5.6 million PGA Canadian Open by three strokes. Snedeker captured his sixth career PGA title and second of the year after a February triumph at Pebble Beach, finishing on 16-under par 272 with countrymen Johnson, Jason Bohn, Matt Kuchar and William McGirt sharing second on 275. It was Snedeker’s third triumph in his past four attempts to win a US PGA event with a 54-hole lead, having also done so at Pebble Beach and last year’s Tour Championship. He also led the Masters after 54 holes but settled for a share of sixth. Snedeker claimed the $1 million top prize at Glen Abbey Golf Club after shooting a third-round 63 on Saturday to take the lead following the departure of 36-hole leader Hunter Mahan, who withdrew to attend the birth of his first child -- daughter Zoe was born early Sunday morning. “Zoe will be getting a very nice baby gift from me,” Snedeker said. “I can’t thank Kandi enough for going into labor early. I don’t know if I’d be sitting here if she hadn’t. But that is a way more important thing than a golf tournament. I missed a golf tourna-

I’m sure Hunter would say the same thing.” Snedeker birdied the par-5 second hole and answered a bogey at the sixth with a birdie at the par-3 seventh to stretch his lead to two strokes. After starting the back nine with a birdie, Snedeker was on 16-under and three strokes ahead. But when Snedeker took a bogey at the par-3 12th, he opened the door for

Johnson, who birdied the par-5 13th and 16th to grab a share of the lead. Johnson’s title bid collapsed on the 17th, when he fired the ball out of bounds and then he left his fourth shot in a fairway bunker on the way to a triple-bogey seven that dumped him out of contention, even after a closing birdie at the par-5 18th. “I was playing really well,” Johnson said. “Really confident, swinging the driver really good. So you know, it’s a driver hole for me, and I just blocked it a little bit. Made a poor swing. ... Not too happy, but I felt really good with my golf game. ... It’s nothing, nothing to worry about. I’ll go get them next weekend.” From there, Snedeker added a birdie at 16 and parred the final two holes to secure the victory. “Just ecstatic right now,” Snedeker said. “I wanted to win just because my caddie is actually from Canada and it’s his national open. It meant a lot to him, meant a lot to me. Third-oldest tournament on tour and it’s got some great history to it, and now to put my name on that trophy it means a lot.” Americans Mark Wilson, John Merrick and Roberto Castro shared sixth on 276. Cibulkova grinds Isner comes from behind to win out victory In a match billed as the tallest final in the history of the ATP Tour, Isner fired 24 aces to the 21 of Anderson.

STANFORD: Dominika Cibulkova pulled off a gritty 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over topseeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland Sunday to win the WTA premier hardcourt tournament at Stanford. Slovakian third seed Cibulkova shook off the memory of four prior defeats against Radwanska, including a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing in the final at Sydney in January, to claim a third career WTA title. She broke world number four Radwanska for a 5-4 lead in the third set, then clawed through a final game lasting more than 10 minutes to seal the triumph on her fifth match point. “It seemed like forever,” Cibulkova said of the final game, but she was beaming after firing a backhand winner

to take the match, her father, Milan, racing onto the court to congratulate her moments after. “He got a little emotional,” said Cibulkova, who had done a good job of controlling her own nerves as the match points piled up in the final game. AFP

ATLANTA: Top-seeded John Isner saved two match points then dominated the closing tiebreaker to beat Kevin Anderson 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (7/2) Sunday to win the ATP Atlanta Open. In a match billed as the tallest final in the history of the ATP Tour, the 2.06-meter Isner fired 24 aces to the 21 of the 2.03m Anderson and saved all 11 break points he faced. That included two match points for South Africa’s secondseeded Anderson in the 12th game of the third set, when Isner fended off one with a 143-mph service winner and survived another when Anderson nudged a backhand long. Having held serve to knot the set at 6-6, Isner didn’t give Anderson any more chances. He raced to a 3-0 lead in the tiebreaker and took a 6-1 lead

with a pair of booming serves. Anderson saved one match point with a service winner of his own before netting a backhand on the final point. With his seventh ATP title -- a first in Atlanta after runner-up finishes here in 2010 and 2011 -Isner will return to the top 20 of the world rankings on Monday.

He nabbed his second trophy of the season to go with the one he captured in Houston in April, and capped a return from the left knee injury that saw him retire from his first-round match at Wimbledon. “This is a tournament where I could’ve been out in my first match,” Isner said. AFP

Dilshan returned unbeaten on 115 and Sangakkara made 91 during a record partnership of 184 runs to steer the hosts past South Africa’s 238 all out in the 44th over of the day-night match. Dilshan’s 17th one-day century and the second against South Africa was studded with 16 boundaries. Sangakkara kept pace with his partner with eight fours and two sixes. The pair put on Sri Lanka’s highest one-day stand for any wicket against the Proteas after opener Mahela Jayawardene had been removed for 12 in the 10th over. Left-handed Sangakkara missed his second hundred in the series when he holed out in the deep off Morne Morkel when just 10 more were needed for victory. Ragged South Africa paid dearly for conceding 20 extras that included 17 wides and a no-ball. West Indies, the world T20 champions, dropped to fourth in what was yet another setback following hard on the heels of the 3-1 loss to the Pakistanis in the preceding one-day international series. “It was a tough tour and credit must be given to everyone associated with the squad for the success that we have enjoyed here,” said a delighted Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez, who also played a key role with the ball in dismissing the dangerous but out-of-form Chris Gayle cheaply for the second time in two days. “When we saw the pitch, we knew, with our four spinners, that any total of 135-140 would have given us a chance, and so it worked out.” An unbeaten 46 by man of the match Umar Akmal and 44 from opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad paced Pakistan to a total that was always going to be challenging on a slow, turning surface. SOLNA: Goalkeeper Nadine Angerer saved two penalties to help Germany win a record sixth consecutive women’s European Championship with a 1-0 success against Norway in Solna on Sunday. Substitute Anja Mittag scored the only goal just a few minutes after being introduced from the bench at the beginning of the second period but the true star of the show was Angerer. She deflected Trine Ronning’s first half spot-kick away with her knee before thwarting Solveig Gulbrandsen from 12 yards in the second period. Those two crucial stops meant Mittag’s close range tapin from a pinpoint cross from CHICAGO: Brek Shea scored in the 69th minute to give the United States a 1-0 victory over Panama in Sunday’s title match of the Gold Cup, North America’s biennial continental football championship tournament.
