YESTERDAY’S QUESTION
WILL T-FORMATION SAVE CONGRESS POLL PROSPECTS? 57% 43%
Dejected IPS cadre plans VRS HYDERABAD: Most IPS officers in AP seem unhappy at the bifurcation of AP as their playfield has been curtailed and most of them hate to be dumped in coastal Andhra, which is beset with problems. As the new state was being announced, many IPS officers were seen in knots of twos and threes, discussing with concern their future. Discussions overheard by sources say that many, who are at the fag end of their career, plan to take voluntary retirement and move on to corporate jobs. There would also be some amount of witch-hunting as some duty-conscious officers have been impartial in dealing with T-uprisings

Exodus of students from Hyderabad?
ALEENA ALICE aleena.t@postnoon.com
HYDERABAD: Now here is an education bomb, triggered by the T-formation. With the formation of a separate state, many of the established corporate colleges have been receiving requests from parents living in the Telangana region to shift their wards to some of the educational hubs in the Andhra region like Vijaywada, Guntur and Nellore. In fact, they want these reputed corporate schools and colleges to open shop in Rayala-Andhra regions. Since most of the leading educational institutions, especially in Hyderabad, are under the Andhra management, parents fear that the division of the State would affect the quality. According to reliable sources, some of the private corporate colleges, institutions offering professional courses and some schools have already

started expanding their establishments in coastal Andhra region. Confirming this news, one of the principals of a reputed corporate college said, “Once the confusion between the two separated states is clear, we are expecting more students to shift
to the Andhra region, so we are considering expanding the number of institutions. The institutions will even spread in Andhra regions, which we have so far not ventured into.” Though the government promised to bring out a separate
Act for the Andhra people residing in Telangana region, questions about whether the education sector would feature in the Act or not were also raised by educationalists. Now that most of these educational institutions would shift their base to different regions in Andhra, there is a high possibility of disturbance in the educational systems and the academic year. However defending this, TRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao, speaking to Postnoon, said, “So far, the people from Andhra region were dominating the private education (sector). Due to lack of funding and discrimination, the local institutions have been deprived the opportunity to grow. However, now the education sector will take a different turn and it will be for the good of the students and the State.”
T ENDS NAIDU DREAM
PK SURENDRAN surendran.pk@postnoon.com
HYDERABAD: Matinee idol and politician Chiranjeevi is not credited with great foresight, but he proved cent per cent correct in predicting one thing — the future of dynamic leader N Chandrababu Naidu. While Naidu was on his extended padayatra, Chiranjeevi commented, “Naidu will only develop blisters on his sole. He will not return to power.” Events that led to T-formation yesterday have placed Naidu in the most tragic Shakespearean character, King Lear’s shoes. Maybe he is in a more tragic state than Lear. In the game the Congress played in the creation of T-state, the biggest loser is the TDP as it finds itself fallen between the stools. The man who is credited with giving Hyderabad a modern face is the most disappointed of all political leaders today. The TDP’s unequivocal support to the T-state was a political folly, say observers of politics. Naidu had resisted the temptation all through but yielded to the pressure from the TDP camp in T and consented. The party senior leaders say they never expected a sudden solution to T and so thought of taking a risk. But the gamble did not pay off. Now, at one stroke, one-third of its support base has been chopped off. Reduced to Seemandhra, the TDP will

They are deputy CM Damodar Raja Narasimha, young and dynamic civil supplies minister D Sridhar Babu, Panchayath Raj minister K Jana Reddy and industries minister Dr J Geeta Reddy. have a tough time explaining to the RayalaAndhra regions why they become party to the division of the State. The pain is made more acute with the smarter YSRC disowning Telangana just in time to save their bastion — Rayala-Andhra.
HOW THEY PLAYED AND SCORED/LOST The Congress played a crafty game, hoping to merge with TRS and capture the whole of Telangana region for the 2014 elections. Its calculations are that it would walk away with 10-12 of 17 Parliamentary seats from T. As for Seemandhra, the Congress will
absorb the YSRC, which is expected to sweep the region. Making Jagan Mohan Reddy chief minister after polls will end all fracas: Om Shanti! TRS will have little reason to exist after the T-formation and therefore would either become an ally of Congress or merge with it. Its leaders have achieved what they wanted —positions — and the prize catch, Hyderabad. All’s well that ends well. The YSRC has played safe. After seeing the first leg of panchayat poll results, the party thought it prudent to disown Telangana and butter its places of strength — Rayala and Andhra. The party is in a win-win situation as it can mop up maximum number of Assembly seats and Parliament seats to either bargain with the Congress or merge with it. It is in a situation predestined to win the lottery, either way. The BJP has been supporting Telangana and it has zero presence elsewhere. It can keep Mahbubnagar and extend its influence. No one can prevent it. MIM, which has some 38 lakh Muslim population spread over Telangana, is strong, besides Hyderabad, in Ranga Reddy, Medak and Nizamabad. The party will do anything to spread, though it had opposed T. Narrow-band has nothing to lose, it can only expand. Leftists have no great presence. Their growth had long been stunted. The CPI struck up with T. Beggars are not choosers.

BRAND HYDERABAD LOSES
Md INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com
HYDERABAD: The announcement of the UPA government to create a new state of Telangana has come as a blow to the 450year-old historic city of Hyderabad. Though the terms of references are yet to be framed by the Centre for the administration of two new states with Hyderabad as the joint capital for a period of 10 years, the intelligentsia and politicians are clueless about the fate of Hyderabad in coming days after being elevated to joint capital status. Their worries about Brand Hyderabad are many; revenue sharing, conduct of elections in the upcoming General Elections scheduled to be held next year, administrative issues, sharing of infrastructure, concern of longterm investments.
REVENUE SHARING This has become the most important and debated issue among Hyderabadis. Majority of the Hyderabadis are clueless about what kind of framework the Centre will have viz-a-viz revenue generated by Hyderabad. According to an estimate, Hyderabad alone generates over `75,000 crore (IT and ITES services contribute `42,000 crore to State government) revenue for the State government through various taxes and fees. This is over 50 per cent of the total revenue of the State government. The biggest issue that has now come up for discussion is whether the newly formed Andhra and Rayalaseema State would also claim a share from it. Speaking to Postnoon, main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP)’s State organising secretary PL Srinivas, a blue-blooded Hyderabadi, said that he is clueless about what the Centre is going to do with the income generated from Hyderabad. He said that the revenue generated by the historic city should be spent on the development of Telangana region and added that not a sin-

for the entire City of Hyderabad by dividing the State. “The people of Hyderabad are in utter confusion. We don’t know what will happen to us as there is no clarity on our status as a joint capital,” he said. Senior Congress leader and chairman of AP Minorities Commission Abid Rasool Khan said that the Centre would announce a special package for the development of Andhra and Rayalaseema regions. The revenue generated by Hyderabad will not be spent for the development of both the regions.
TWO CENTRES OF GOVERNANCE?
Cooler elements see the hurried division of Telangana as debilitating for the future of its star city, Hyderabad. Its growth is in all probability going to get stunted with two governments pulling it in opposite directions, scaring investors away. A beginning has already been made with parents asking corporate educational institutions to shift shop to Andhra. Realty is in doldrums. But does anybody care?
There is also confusion over how the administration of the two newly formed states would be done from Hyderabad. How will the City accommodate two chief ministers and equal number of Secretariats, legislative assemblies and councils? The CM of which state will yield power from the existing Secretariat? What would be his equation with his counterpart? According to Rambotla, it would be difficult for two CMs to function from the same City as there is a chance of ego clash between the two.
FATE OF FUTURE INVESTMENTS
gle penny should go towards Andhra and Rayalaseema region. Srinivas demanded the Centre announce a special package for Andhra and Rayalaseema region. “Whatever is earned by Hyderabad city is its own
income. The State of Telangana, of which Hyderabad is an integral part and its capital, will have a natural claim on the income generated by the City. I demand the Central government announce a special package for the development of both the
other regions instead of spending money of our region,” he said. Srinivas also warned the Centre that he will not let go of the income generated by Hyderabad. Another TDP leader, Sudheesh Rambotla, said that the Centre had created a huge mess
The division has also shrouded the issue of future investments in Hyderabad. During the partnership summit last year, the State government entered into Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with 243 companies. These companies have pledged to invest a whopping `6.47 lakh crore over a period of time in the State. Interestingly, a handful of these companies have plans to operate their businesses from Hyderabad. These investments promised creation of over 6,00,000 jobs for unemployed youth of the State.

I
f Mohd Rafi were alive today, he’d be very glad of his massive popularity among melody lovers but would have shied away from attending parties or such melas. For Rafi was a simple soul who was not equal to the glitz of the cine world. Hyderabad joined the rest of India in remembering Mohd Rafi on his 33rd death anniversary with Rafi ki Yaaden programmes, where his immortal songs were sung by his young admirers. A tribute to the greatest singer of our times was paid by Muhammed Fahad and team at Nehru Centre. Rafi Foundation too commemorated his death anniversary, while hundreds of music lovers paid tribute to Rafi by organising his songs’ fests and listening to Rafi music all day long on radio.
SIMPLE SOUL
For such a titan in the film industry, it is surprising very little is known of this man, except that he was devoted to music and family, was a practising Muslim, and a lover of humanity. He is not on record having addressed a gath-
ering or given a media interview, not even a talk to Akashvani. However, some scribe is said to have asked him once what his main hobbies are. Giving out his winsome smile, he replied innocently — gaana aur khana! He had, in his 35-year career, sung some 5,000 songs in 11 languages. He is matched by Lata Mangeshkar and surpassed by Asha Bhonsale, though Rafi and Lata had a slanging match over AROUND THE

Guinness Book records. He had sung for all the music directors of his time, but it was Naushad who gave him big break. He also had a great relationship with composer OP Nayyar. Rafi’s mellifluous voice, his ability to twist and twang the song to suit the actor, enthrals millions even 33 years after his death. It is no exaggeration to say that if radio stops playing Rafi songs, it would be reduced to a cinder box. His voice is divine, and till he lost the sweetness of his voice in the late seventies, he remained the king of melodious voices. The void remains vacant even today.

ow, division causes heartbreak. A farmer from Kadapa district is reported to have died of a heart attack yesterday as he was watching the news about the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh on television. Mahaboob Basha, 48, a resident of Rayalapantula Gari Palli near Alankanupalli, died of a heart attack soon after watching news of the State’s bifurcation, his family members said.
The family said that Mahaboob Basha, after completing work in his farm near the Kurnool-Kadapa canal, came home and began watching news on television. Soon after watching news about AP’s bifurcation, he collapsed and was taken to hospital, where he was declared dead. It is however not clear if he was an avid Samaikhyaandra supporter. But family members say he had no history of heart ailments and he appeared very dejected at the division of the State as he has family scattered throughout AP.

Much of China is in the grip of a summer heatwave, and the China Meteorological Association issued a high temperature warning for several eastern and central provinces, saying temperatures could reach 41 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Leng Guangming, a spokesman at the Shanghai Municipal Centre for Disease Control and
Prevention, said there had been at least 10 victims of heat stroke up to last Friday. He declined to give a more precise or more recent number. City forecasters said temperatures were “rising
rapidly” and could reach 40 deg C in People's Square on Wednesday. Experts blame a subtropical high pressure system and a lack of rain for the record-breaking heatwave, according to media. Pictures have shown people sheltering from the heat in air-conditioned shops or subways, and trying to cool off in swimming pools and rivers. Footage of a slice of pork cooked through in 10 minutes on outdoor stone slab, taken by a Shanghai TV station, has gone viral online. “It turns out that the only difference between me and roast meat is a pinch of cumin,” joked one user of the Twitter-like microblog Sina Weibo. The man with a plan
To help football take strong roots, Masefield says he has a plan that must be implemented in rural areas along with metros. “We must look for talent in villages and give them a real chance.” ARUN D YELLAMATY arunyellamaty@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Paul Masefield knows football is not big in India. But the English pundit has a plan to change that. “It is going to be tough,” he said. “Children here have not been given basic football training — dribbling, controlling, passing, spotting the ball and hopefully if we train up children properly, the future will be taken care of and there will be skilled footballers for the future national team.” To help football take strong roots, Masefield says the plan must be implemented in rural areas along with metros. “We must look for talent in villages and give them a real chance. This is a long-term ambitious plan and I am very excited about it,” he said. The former footballer was in the city to announce the launch of KOOH Sports Football Development Centres in various schools here. He will work in the capacity of technical director. Though Masefield is hopeful, he has the real picture of the state of football here. “The facilities are poor here, for me it is not just the basic level, for me it is to go till the top. Many coaches who I spoke to said that the facilities are bad. For quite a lot of time football was somewhere down to cricket, not I

tice. You can’t say that football is not popular — I think it lacks exposure,” he said. The proposed IPL-style football tournament by the All India Football Federation’s commercial partner IMG-Reliance does not excite him. “I do believe it makes a mockery of the I-League. If you see the way some of the teams have done and gone through, Trevor Morgan (former coach of East Bengal) has done a fantastic job. I have watched them play this year in the AFC Cup. Now all of a sudden you have a 70-day tournament." Masefield said it would be better if the I-League got the support. " Why don't they go in and help fund the I-League? That would be

more beneficial: by giving the money there, filtering down to the teams, paying the players more, making it more viable. So for me, it's nonsense. I wouldn't agree with that league at all." To bolster his opinion he brought up the instance in Indonesia. “Look what happened in Indonesia with two domestic leagues in place, the Indonesian Premier League and the Indonesia Super League: it threatened the future of the sport there.” Masefield says he has spotted some future talent and said he
would return to the city to train them. “People should start seeing a career in football, there is good money here too.” Masefield talked fondly of Manchester United manager David Moyes, whom he played along with in Preston North End. “He is a passionate guy. He is a winner. You have to give him huge credit for saying ‘I will take this mantle’. He is a brave man to take it after what Sir Alex Ferguson achieved. I hope he does extremely well.” But Masefield thinks it’s gonna be tough for his mate. "For David, he has a lot of tough decisions to make, as Rooney made it clear he doesn’t want to stay. It's a big task for David.”

KINSHASA: The United Nations on Tuesday threatened to use force against M23 rebel forces near Goma city, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, if they do not disarm within 48 hours. A new UN intervention brigade will be used for the first time to help the DR Congo army set up a "security zone" in the city, the international body said.
HARARE: Crisis-weary Zimbabweans will vote later Wednesday in a fiercely contested election dominated by Robert Mugabe's bid to extend his 33 year rule and suspicions of vote rigging. The 89-year-old president, Africa's oldest leader, is running for election for the seventh and perhaps final time.
BOGOTA: Colombia will charge 13 right-wing paramilitary chiefs and three leftist rebel chiefs with crimes against humanity for some of the worst atrocities in decades of civil strife. "We are talking about 16 crimes in which there were approximately 3,000 people killed,” the country's top prosecutor Eduardo Montealegre told the media.
MEXICO CITY: Mexico's enormous and worsening poverty figures underscore that authorities have not made fighting it a top priority, Amnesty International charged Tuesday. The government this week reported that the number of Mexicans living in poverty rose from 52.8 million in 2010 to 53.3 million in 2012.

WASHINGTON: A Sikh gurdwara in Riverside, California has been vandalised in an apparent hate crime with the word ‘TERRIST!' in capital letters spray painted around the complex, according to a community organisation.
General Siddharth Luthra told the apex court bench headed by Chief Justice P. Sathasivam that he would accordingly instruct the public prosecutor to inform the Juvenile Justice Board that it should not pronounce its verdict which is scheduled for Aug 5. The court also said that it will examine the maintainability of Swamy's petition as Additional Solicitor General Luthra contended that there could not be any third party intervention in a criminal matter involving a state and an individual.
The family of the victim alleged that Chhotu Khan had been exerting pressure on them, seeking the girl in marriage. His requests were turned down, and he allegedly hatched a conspiracy to rape the girl. The girl was so brutally thrashed that there were marks on the head and other parts of the body. As news of the incident spread, enraged people reached Ramgarh, protesting the rape and thrashing. Many people blocked the Ramgarh-Patratu highway and burnt tyres on the road. In another incident of rape, a municipal ward member was gang-raped in Pakur district of Jharkhand Tuesday.
SALDEF Executive Director Jasjit Singh said, “It is horrible to see an attack of hate on a place of worship as we reflect on the lives lost one year ago during the attack on the Oak Creek Gurdwara” in Wisconsin where six Sikh worshippers were shot dead by a white supremacist gunman. Asking local and federal law enforcement agencies to rightfully classify the incident as a hate crime, he said: “Attacks and vandalism against any of the nation’s houses of worship must be condemned by all Americans." | IANS

estimated that at the time of the derailment the train was travelling at 153 kilometres an hour,” it said in a statement. The speed limit at the spot where the Madrid to Ferrol train derailed on Wednesday on the outskirts of Santiago de Compostela is 80 kilometres an hour. The driver of the train was speaking on his work phone to staff members of state railway company Renfe and appeared to consult a map at the time of the accident, the court added. “Minutes before the train came off the tracks he received a call on his work phone to get indications on the route he had to take to get to Ferrol. Shilpa, who established her flagship store in Hyderabad last year, has been invited to display on main stage arena. “I didn’t apply. They said I had a strong profile. I had no idea my work was being followed. LFW was not my plan for the next two years.” However, she is relieved she will have close friends like Shravan and Anushree. “I am going to feel at home there”. THE CUBA CURE
Cuba has long been known for producing quality doctors and providing excellent medical services, and it is now turning to medical tourism as a revenue generator. RIGOBERTO DIAZ Agence France-Presse HAVANA: Football legend Diego Maradona blazed a path for Cuba to become a medical tourism destination when he traveled to the island for drug addiction treatment in 2000. Since then, thousands of other famous and not-so-famous faces have traveled here for help, and the government wants to build on that success. Drug rehab, post-accident motor skills rehabilitation, treatment for eye diseases and plastic surgery — foreign patients can get all of these services and more in Cuba, and at competitive prices. “I’ve improved tremendously. Now I can move my arms and my legs, and I can almost sit down by myself,” said Venezuelan Cruz Ramos, who arrived in Cuba two months ago, so injured after a car accident that he could only move his eyes. In downtown Havana, at a clinic that specialises in eye procedures, fellow Venezuelan Carlos Armando Montana gushes about the services. “Medical attention here is excellent, as much for the quality of the doctors as for the atmosphere and the facilities,” said Montana, 24, who underwent a retina transplant after losing the use of his left eye in an accident. seeks to revive the island’s moribund economy, it is turning to medical tourism as a revenue generator. Cuba’s main source of foreign income is the sale of medical services to other countries — legions of doctors and nurses, who are
public employees, travel abroad to work following an agreement with the host country. While this generates billions of dollars a year, the field of medical tourism is still in its infancy. Servimed, a governmentowned for-profit medical services
company that caters to foreigners, has website pages in Spanish, French and English, the last two aimed mostly at Canadians. “Cuba is a poor country which has placed its priorities in the right places, which is to say, in education and health services,”
reads the site. “We offer the opportunity to be seen and treated by qualified doctors without the delays that one would encounter while trying to visit a doctor in Canada.” Cuba welcomed 2.8 million tourists in 2012, according to official figures. There are no figures however on how many of those foreigners came specifically for medical treatment. “Cuba has the best doctors in the world,” said Maradona after being treated for drug addiction. The Argentine football legend, who befriended Fidel Castro, was so enamored with the island that he has a tattoo of Che Guevara on his right shoulder and an image of Fidel tattooed on his left ankle. African and Latin American leaders have also sought medical attention in Cuba, including Ecuador’s Rafael Correa and — most notably — the late Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. AFP

Bharara said LLB-Vaduz had assisted a significant number of US taxpayers in evading their tax obligations, filing false federal tax returns, and otherwise hiding accounts from the IRS. The total to be paid is made up of $16,316,000 that the US authorities believe the bank obtained in gross revenues by maintaining these undeclared accounts, and $7,525,542 to cover the taxes that should have been paid by the bank’s clients.

WASHINGTON: Wyeth Pharmaceuticals has pleaded guilty to misbranding a drug that prevents the rejection of organ transplants and agreed to pay $490.9 million, the US Justice Department said Tuesday. The $490.9 million will resolve Wyeth’s criminal and civil liability stemming from the unlawful marketing of the prescription drug Rapamune for uses not approved as safe and effective by the US Food and Drug Administration. In 1999, Wyeth received approval from the FDA for Rapamune use in renal, or kidney, transplant patients. The immunosuppressive drug prevents the body’s immune system from rejecting a transplanted organ. esperate for political survival in the State, the Congress has conceded to the longstanding demand of a separate state of Telangana. As the region celebrates the ‘miracle cure’ for all ills ailing the region, little is being said of the gargantuan problems that await. The joint capital from where two chief ministers will rule will present the contentious issue of who has the final word in the administration of the City — especially when it accounts for at least 55 per cent of the revenue generated in the State. It also poses questions on sharing of this revenue as bulk of this comes from investments of people from Seemandhra. One cannot also discount the practical difficulties of governing the newly formed state for 10 years from a capital landlocked a few hundred kilometres in the heart of another state — this is going to be nothing like Chandigarh which is located on the Punjab Haryana border. Least spoken of is the colossal sums that need to be spent for division of resources, the inevitable litigations, administrative reorganisation. If creation of new states could solve the problems of the marginalised and under-represented, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand would have been the crown jewels of the country. Instead they represent the nadirs of everything that could go wrong with a state. Expectations are high, margin for error is low: a true agnipariksha awaits the estranged siblings.

ears that President Robert Mugabe allies will rig Zimbabwe’s election on Wednesday have prompted a citizen army of blogging, tweeting poll monitors. Pressure groups and a cult ‘mole’ blogging from inside Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party have promised to report and colate any accounts of abuses and voting irregularities across the country. Already a popular Facebook blogger, Baba Jukwa -- or Jukwa’s father -- is promising to release election results before the official announcement. The anonymous blogger has received a cult following for exposing Mugabe government secrets, at times giving out mobile telephone numbers of prominent people asking ordinary people to call them to tell them they know what’s going on. The law states election results must only be announced by the chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC). Mugabe has gone as far as to threaten his rival Morgan Tsvangirai with arrest if he declares the results before the
ZEC. But with rumours rife that the military will get a sneak peak at the results before they are released to the world, Baba Jukwa’s tally could be explosive. Already Baba Jukwa has attracted over 300,000 Facebook followers since he started exposing what he calls “evil deeds” of Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party and their purported plans to rig polls. “Zimbabwe I would like to announce to you that I will be official, giving you results and outcome of the election,” Baba Jukwa posted on his page on Monday. “I will as well announce the winner without fear or favour despite the unfair and not free environment.” Meanwhile non-governmental organisations such as Sokwanele and the Election Resource Centre (ERC) are planning to update people on what will be happening during the voting day through their websites, twitter and Facebook. “We are engaging the people through social media so that we tap what will be happening from the good, bad and ugly things on this election,” said Tawanda Chimhini, the director of the Election Resource Centre (ERC). “We will be using social media from Facebook,
WhatsApp and email to expand the power of the people.” “This is our small way of engaging the people to expand the power of the vote and that people will not merely be voting only but they also interrogate what will be happening.” He said information that will be shared include results that will be posted outside polling stations. “It is legal, nothing stops us from doing that,” Chimhini said. The ERC has deployed 210 mobile observers in all of the country’s constituencies to monitor the elections. Although only a fraction of Zimbabwe’s population have access to Internet or data services, the opposition has
accused Mugabe’s government of trying to prevent the spread of information. “They have started interfering with mobile Internet so that there will be no movement of information,” said Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora. “They have also started interfering with Whatsapp as well as bulk sms. This is meant to slow down information during and after the voting process,” he added. “It is certainly the state security agency, the CIO (Central Intelligence Organisation). We know these are people who want to rig elections.”

A
t long last, the dreams of the people of Telangana will come true. As the main party in the United Progressive Alliance have agreed to the creation of a separate state for Telanganites, the pall of uncertainty that hung over them for almost half-a-century has disappeared. However, along with it comes several challenges that need to be addressed. It is most important that in these moments of celebration we do not forget those. The decision has already set off several tongues wagging, some which matter, some rabble-rousers and panic-mongers. The key is not to be distracted and give into cheap theatrics of venting pent-up frustration on unsuspecting citizens that have come and settled here from other parts of the state. Instances like hurling stones at boards of Andhra Bank
READERS’ VIEWS
because it has the word Andhra are unfortunate. What will be created is a separate state, not a country within the boundaries of India. Whatever happens we remain citizens of India and that sentiment is paramount. Also those who have migrated to Hyderabad from other parts of the state and have spent years and resources in making the city what it is now must be reassured that they have nothing to fear now and in the future. Meanwhile, needless are comments like those of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that the decision to create a separate state will trigger a dangerous trend that if you agitate and if you agitate long enough, separate states could be created. If you do well at what you are charged with, all will be well.

F
riendship, as we believe, means sticking by each other’s side through thick and thin. If there’s any movie that can be credited for making this belief even stronger, it’s the story of two best friends Thelma and Louise. The two friends, played by Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis in the Hollywood flick Thelma and Louise, embark on a road trip to get away from their mundane lives. However, even before they reach their destination, the two land in trouble at a small-town bar on the way. The two women make it to the most wanted list after killing a man who attempted to rape Thelma. The movie revolves around how the two deal with the dire situation together. Director: Ridley Scott Actors: Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis.

The friendship between Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger is one all Harry Potter fans have aspired to have in their lives, too. They have broken rules, been in most life threatening situations together, and stuck with each other through thick and thin, literally. Till the end, the series maintained the chemistry between Harry and Ronald, who mostly were the ones inviting trouble, and Hermione warning them against it. Eventually, we do see Ron and Hermione involved in a romance. Directors: Many Actors: Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint.

ery few people are lucky enough to find a true best friend behind bars. Banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), who is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover despite his claims of innocence, is one of those few. Sentenced to two consecutive life sentences at Shawshank State Penitentiary, Andy befriends contraband smuggler Ellis 'Red' Redding (Morgan Freeman), an inmate serving a life sentence. Red procures a rock hammer for Andy, allowing him to create small stone chess pieces and much more... Red later gets him a large poster of Rita Hayworth, followed in later years by images of Marilyn Monroe and Raquel Welch. Public Figures It’s strange that actors and actresses feel they can use the fourth estate as and when it is convenient to them and them alone. It becomes a huge problem if their link-ups, break-ups, etc are reported in the media, on the other hand. Well, isn’t that the price they had agreed to pay when they joined the world of stardom? Grow up Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif! ‘Daddy’ shouldn’t have to defend you all the time.

Prevent that itch in your throat STAY WELL HYDRATED
If you are a person who loves to sing or does scores of presentations and talking on a daily basis, then you surely know how badly the throat is abused. Here are steps that can be taken to prevent throat problems and maintain a healthy voice.
Keeping your body well hydrated by drinking plenty of water each day (6-8 glasses) is essential to maintaining a healthy voice. The vocal cords vibrate extremely fast even with the most simple sound production; remaining hydrated through water consumption optimises the throat’s mucous production, aiding vocal cord lubrication. To maintain sufficient hydration, avoid or moderate substances that cause dehydration. These include alcohol and caffeinated beverages (coffee, tea, soda). And always increase hydration when exercising.
DO NOT SMOKE It is well known that smoking leads to lung or throat cancer. Primary and second-hand smoke that is breathed in passes by the vocal cords, causing significant irritation and swelling of the vocal cords. This will permanently change voice quality, nature and capabilities.
DO NOT ABUSE OR MISUSE YOUR VOICE Your voice is not indestructible. In everyday communication, be sure to avoid habitual yelling, screaming or cheering. Try not to talk loudly in locations with significant background noise or noisy environments. Be aware of your background noise — when it becomes noisy, significant increases in voice volume occur naturally, causing harm to your voice. If you feel like your throat is dry, tired, or your voice is
becoming hoarse, stop talking. To reduce or minimise voice abuse or misuse, use nonvocal or visual cues to attract attention, especially with children. Try not to speak in an unnatural pitch. Adopting an extremely low pitch or high pitch can cause an injury to the vocal cords with subsequent hoarseness and a variety of problems.
MINIMISE THROAT CLEARING Clearing your throat can be compared to slapping or slamming the vocal cords together. Consequently, excessive throat clearing can cause vocal cord injury and subsequent hoarseness. An alternative to voice clearing is taking a small sip of water or simply swallowing to clear the secretions from the throat and alleviate the need for throat clearing or coughing. The most common reason for excessive throat clearing is an unrecognised medical condition, causing one to clear one’s throat too much. Common causes of
ANEWS PP-LYBRIEFS YOURSELF
chronic throat clearing include gastroesophageal reflux, laryngopharyngeal reflux disease, sinus and/or allergic disease.
MODERATE VOICE USE WHEN SICK Reduce your vocal demands as much as possible when your voice is hoarse due to excessive use or an upper respiratory infection (cold). Singers should

exhibit extra caution if one’s speaking voice is hoarse because permanent and serious injury to the vocal cords are more likely when the vocal cords are swollen or irritated. TV ADS ON FB? Facebook, seeking to break the long-held dominance of television over advertising budgets, plans to sell TV-style commercials on its site for as much as $2.5 million a day, two people familiar with the matter said. The world’s largest social-networking site, which has 1.15 billion members, expects to start offering 15-second spots to advertisers later this year, according to the people, who asked not to be named because the plans aren’t public. Ram now hopes to release his film in August provided he gets screens amidst the rush of big-budget flicks such as Thalaiva, Chennai Express, Attarintiki Daaredhi and Yevadu. "Today, it's very unlikely to get a solo release. Each week a minimum of two films in Tamil are hitting the screens, and it is likely to continue in the weeks to come," he added.

he might not get paid as much as Iron Man, but there’s no doubt that celestial beauty Angelina Jolie is smiling all the way to the bank. This year, Jolie topped Forbes‘ annual list of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood with an incredibly robust $33 million. Though her last big-budget feature was the much maligned The Tourist back in 2010, Jolie has spent the past few years developing, writing and directing flicks such as In the Land of Blood and Honey and the upcoming Unbroken, and even found time to film Disney’s Maleficent. You see, Angelina Jolie is so wealthy that she can basically stop acting, develop some very small indie flicks and still make money. Everyone’s dream best friend Jennifer
Lawrence came in second on the list, pocketing a cool $26 million, which will go well with her Oscar. Rounding out the top five was past payday queen Kristen Stewart ($22 million), America’s Sweetheart Jennifer Aniston ($20 million), and America’s Sweetheart Part II Emma Stone ($16 million). So three out of the top five are under twenty-four years of age while the other two on the list have a very, very, very famous man in common. Plus, when added together, the top five women in Hollywood earned a collective $117 million — talk about Girl Power! Of course, this pales in comparison to the $308 million that Hollywood’s top five male actors earned last year but hey, baby steps.

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

SWIMMING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Agnel reaps fruit of Phelps’ mentor Yannick Agnel said that working with Phelps’ ex-coach Bob Bowman helped him win the 200m freestyle gold. RYLAND JAMES, KIERAN CANNING Agence France-Presse BARCELONA: Olympic champion Yannick Agnel has said working with Michael Phelps’ ex-coach Bob Bowman helped the Frenchman win 200m freestyle gold at the swimming world championships. France’s Agnel demolished a powerful field in Tuesday’s final, clocking 1min 44.20secs, more than a second ahead of Conor Dwyer of the USA, who finished second at 1.12sec back with Russia’s Danila Izotov 1.39 adrift in third. Having started working with Bowman two months ago, this was Agnel’s second gold at the eight-day long Barcelona championships after France won Sunday’s 4x100m freestyle relay final. Just as he did in the London 2012 final, Agnel led from the first turn and was well clear of the field by the final length leaving Dwyer, his training partner since moving to the USA, in his wake. “This is as beautiful as London,” beamed the 21-yearold Agnel. “I wasn’t expecting this, I said to myself I will swim as I did in London and see what happens.” The towering Frenchman described it as “magic” to win the final by more than a second and claimed he had answered any critics of his move from

France to Baltimore, to work with Bowman. “I said even if I came back with silver I would still have answered them and to get gold provides them with an even better response. Perfect in fact,” he said. Agnel said he is learning all the time from the man who masterminded Phelps’ record haul of
eight gold medals at Beijing 2008 in a career which reaped 18 Olympic titles. “Bob’s a great technician and a great man, the partnership is giving something special,” said Agnel. “We have a very good team, good training sessions, a good coach, good conditions and beside that we are really relaxed. “I was with Conor (Dwyer) a month ago and we said we were going to be first and second in Barcelona, and it finally happened.” Having moved to Baltimore in June, Agnel said he is already enjoying the difference of living in the United States having parted company with French coach Fabrice Pellerin in May.
The Washington born swimmer broke Kate Ziegler’s six-year-old mark of 15 minutes 42.54 seconds by an amazing six seconds in the race of the night as Denmark’s Lotte Friis only took silver despite also bettering Ziegler’s record by nearly four seconds. “I knew we were going
pretty fast,” said a beaming Ledecky as she took her gold medal tally at the championships to two after also storming to victory in the 400m freestyle on Sunday. “We separated ourselves from the field early and I felt whoever touched the wall first was going to get that record.” Friis though was left with the most bittersweet taste having produced an extraordinary swim of her own. “It was really mixed emotions when Katie got the plaque up there because I think I deserve one too,” lamented the champion from two years ago in Shanghai. On a night filled with US success, Missy Franklin also stayed on track in her attempt to match Michael Phelps’ record eight gold medal haul from the Beijing Olympics five years ago. The 18-yearold picked up her first individual gold of the meet in the 100m backstroke. AFP

Devvarman dethrones defending champ WASHINGTON: Indian qualifier Somdev Devvarman (right) eliminated defending champion Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) on Tuesday at the $1.76 million ATP and WTA Washington Open. World number 129 Devvarman, a twotime US college champion ranked 104 spots below Ukranian ninth seed Dolgopolov, advanced to the round of 16, where he could face US eighth seed John Isner on Thursday. “I’m very happy. That guy is a tough player, no question,” Devvarman said. “I played really well. in the beginning. he gave me a couple errors to break him. “He fought back in the second set. I was serving well. It kept me in the match.
Two other Aussies won as well, with wildcard James Duckworth downing Japanese qualifier Yuichi Sugita 6-2, 6-2 and Marinko Matosevic ousting Russian 15th seed Nikolay Davydenko 6-4, 7-5. Another Aussie qualifier, Samuel Groth, blasted 10 aces but lost as Canadian fourth seed Milos Raonic hit nine of his own in a 7-5, 6-4 triumph. Japanese second seed Kei Nishikori, a career-best 11th in the rankings, will open with a second-round match Wednesday night against US wildcard Jack Sock, who beat Dutchman Igor Sijsling 6-4, 6-2. “I’m going to just go out and play my game,” Sock said. “If I’m playing well, I think I have a shot at a lot of guys.” AFP
I gave myself looks on his serve. It was just confidence.” Devvarman, who went to India after Wimbledon to work with a Chennai-based charity called “Life is a Ball,” feels on top of his game. “I’m pretty sharp,” he said. “Physically for sure.” Meanwhile, American Ryan Harrison ousted Australian former world number one Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 7-5 to book a Wednesday second-round match against Argentine top seed Juan Martin Del Potro, a two-time Washington winner and the 2009 US Open champion. If Del Potro advances, he would face 20-year-old Aussie Bernard Tomic in the round of 16.
Bernard Tomic surges ahead JIM SLATER Agence France-Presse WASHINGTON: Putting aside offcourt distractions in his first match since a fourth-round Wimbledon run, Australia’s Bernard Tomic (in pic) advanced to the round of 16 on Tuesday at the ATP Washington Open. Tomic, who had an opening bye as the 14th seed, beat David Goffin 6-1, 63, avenging a first-round loss to the Belgian last year at Wimbledon and booking a third-round matchup with either American Ryan Harrison or Argentine top seed Juan Martin Del Potro, the 2009 US Open winner. “I played not so bad,” Tomic said. “Very tough conditions. Very difficult to play 100 percent on these courts because it’s so hot and so humid.” The distraction was mild by comparison to the 12-month ATP ban that kept Tomic’s father John from watching him play at Wimbledon. The elder Tomic faces charges in Madrid after a head-butting incident that left former Tomic hitting partner Thomas Drouet with a broken nose, although John
Putting aside off-court distractions in his first match since a fourth-round Wimbledon run, Bernard Tomic advanced to the round of 16. Tomic said he acted in self defense. Tomic has elected to cope with such distractions internally. “I sort of like to put things inside of me to distance myself from what’s around me,” he said. “That’s how I deal with it.”
Tomic said that he has received support since the Madrid incident from Tennis Australia, a group with whom he once had strained relations. “There has been some help,” Tomic said. “Probably not the help I would have expected, but there has been some help. They have been very good. They have been supportive. I get along with Tennis Australia very well.” Tomic, the youngest player in the draw at 20, fired seven aces and saved all six break points that he faced to beat Goffin in 65 minutes at the US Open hardcourt tuenup in his first match since losing to Czech Tomas Berdych in the fourth round at Wimbledon. “I’m happy with the way I’m playing because I didn’t put a lot of preparing into this tournament,” Tomic said, noting his three-week break since Wimbledon. Tomic said he has not been bothered by a right hamstring injury that forced him to withdraw in the first round at the French Open. Ranked 40th after reaching a career high of 27th a year ago, Tomic is 20-13 this year.

Hantuchova opens campaign with a bang CARLSBAD: Daniela Hantuchova roared into the second round of the WTA Southern California Open on Tuesday with a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of Austrian Tamira Paszek. Slovakia’s Hantuchova, who needed just 47 minutes to dispatch Paszek, set up a second-round clash with second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, and also warmed up for her marquee doubles match on Wednesday with former world number one Martina Hingis. Swiss great Hingis will be playing her first WTA match since 2007 when she and Hantuchova play firstround doubles against Julia Goerges of Germany and Darija Jurak of Croatia. Hingis won five Grand Slam singles titles and nine in doubles and spent a total of 209 weeks as world number one before she retired for the first time in 2003. SPORTS BRIEFS Park Inbee returns to St Andrews
ST ANDREW: In 2007,
South Korea’s Park Inbee finished 11th as a rookie at the Women’s British Open at St Andrews. Six years on and she is back at the famous Old Course as the world number one and attempting to become the first golfer — male or female — to win four majors in one season. Following her victories at the Kraft Nabisco, LPGA Championship and US Open, the addition of a first British Open would rewrite history. “It is nice to be back here
in Scotland with three major victories,” said the 25-yearold from Seoul. “There is a lot of pressure and everyone is talking about me trying to make it four in a row. But I’m getting used to it and once I am on the course I only think about golf.” she added. Park spent last week back home in South Korea — and there was plenty of evidence of the rewards of her success. Not only was she the centre of fans’ attention but she was also handed the keys to a red Ferrari.
“I’ve been given it for a year,” she said before returning her focus back to golf. “I feel as though I’ve already played two different golf courses. Yesterday (Monday), there was no wind. Today (Tuesday) was really windy and wet and it was completely different. “I have great memories of 2007. It was my first year on Tour and Lorena Ochoa won the title. At that time, she was the best player in the world.” she said of the retired AFP Mexican.

Oz mull Warner recall
Australia are pondering whether to recall controversial batsman David Warner for their must-win third Ashes Test against England on Thursday. Australia hope Warne can help spinners MANCHESTER: Australia are to call on Shane Warne to advise their spinners ahead of the make-or-break third Ashes Test at Old Trafford — where the leg-spin legend delivered the 'ball of the century' 20 years ago. Warne, in England as a television commentator, has been asked to have a word with 19-year-old leftarmer Ashton Agar and off-spinner Nathan Lyon by former teammate turned Australia coach Darren Lehmann ahead of a match the tourists, 2-0 down in the five-match series, must win to keep their Ashes hopes alive. AFP
MANCHESTER: Australia are pondering whether to recall controversial batsman David Warner for their must-win third Ashes Test against England at Old Trafford starting on Thursday. Top-order batting has long been Australia's Achilles heel and so it proved in a crushing 347-run second Test defeat at Lord's, where the tourists were
skittled out for just 128 in their first innings. England lead the five-match series 2-0 and Australia need to win in Manchester if their hopes of regaining the Ashes are not to be extinguished — a drawn series would see holders England retain the urn. Australia, following a 4-0 series reverse in India earlier this year, have suffered six successive
DUPLICATE
Tests defeats for the first time since 1984 -- they last lost seven in a row in the 19th Century. Warner missed the first two Tests of the current series having been suspended in the run-up to the Ashes for punching England's Joe Root in a Birmingham bar after Australia lost a Champions Trophy match to their arch-rivals last month. Instead the 26-year-old opener joined up with Australia A for whom he made 193 against South Africa A in Pretoria last
week before becoming embroiled in a sledging row with the home side's wicketkeeper. Former Australia captain Ian Chappell is adamant that, if selected, Warner must open as that would give him the best chance of imposing his game on England's bowlers. But that would mean Australia coach Darren Lehmann having to give up on at least half of his chosen first-wicket duo of Shane Watson and Chris Rogers.
New DRS feed to be trialled in third Test MANCHESTER: This week's third Ashes Test will see the International Cricket Council (ICC) trial an independent television feed with the aim of improving its controversial Decision Review System. DRS, designed to eliminate the "howler" by on-field umpires, has been at the centre of several controversial decisions in the first two Test of the Ashes, both of which England have won to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Former Australia captain Ian Chappell has been among those leading calls for the system to become a fully independent operation and not, as is currently the case, be reliant on the technology of the host broadcaster. NEW DELHI: Indian bowler S Sreesanth (right) and 38 others were charged Tuesday over a spot-fixing scandal in the Indian Premier League that has rocked the sport, a prosecutor said. Indian prosecutors filed charges in a New Delhi court against the 39 alleging links to organised crime during this year's edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a Twenty20 competition. "The players and others have also been charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating and dishonesty," special public prosecutor Rajesh Mohan told AFP. Two of Sreesanth's teammates from the Rajasthan Royals franchise, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, were also charged along with bookmakers and underworld figures. They were charged under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, Mohan said. The three players were arrest-
ed in May along with scores of bookies as part of a police investigation into the spot-fixing scandal, which has caused outrage among fans in the cricket-mad nation. India's cricket officials launched their own investigation into a separate betting scandal in the IPL, which prompted the country's cricket chief N. Srinivasan to step aside last month pending the outcome of
the probe. In a further twist to the scandal, the Bombay High Court on Tuesday ruled that the probe itself had been illegal, throwing into question the return of Srinivasan. He stepped aside temporarily as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after his son-in-law was arrested, and later released on bail, over alleged links to illegal bookmakers. Banner controversy sparks rows Political banners and a military flag displayed at a match between South Korea and Japan have dragged top government officials from both countries into a diplomatic spat. SEOUL: Political banners and a military flag displayed at a football match between South Korea and Japan have dragged top government officials from both countries into a diplomatic spat. The Korea Football Association (KFA) issued a statement Wednesday insisting that Japanese fans waving a large “rising sun” Japanese military flag had incited South Korean supporters at Sunday’s East Asia Cup tie in Seoul. The home fans had unfurled a giant banner in the first half that read: “There is no future for a people that have forgotten history” — a reference to Japan’s 1910-45 occupation of South Korea. Many South Koreans believe Japan has failed to atone for abuses during the colonial period which remains a constant source of tension between the two countries. The banner was taken down at half-time, but Japan’s foot-
ball association still lodged an official complaint and demanded an explanation from the KFA. Two other banners displayed before the game bore portraits of a Korean independence activist who assassinated a top Tokyo official in 1909, and the admiral
The KFA issued a statement insisting that Japanese fans waving a large “rising sun” Japanese military flag had incited South Korean supporters. who fought off a Japanese invasion in the 16th century. On Monday, Japan’s chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga said the banners were “extremely regrettable” and violated a FIFA ban on political statements. Sports Minister Hakubun
Shimomura went further on Tuesday, saying the style of the banners called into question “the nature of the people” in South Korea. The South Korean foreign ministry then responded with a statement deploring Shimomura’s “rude comments." Although the size of the South Korean banners suggested the protest was pre-planned, Wednesday’s KFA statement argued it had been triggered by the away supporters’ military flag-waving. “The flag evokes painful memories for Koreans. Yet the Japanese fans waved a giant flag right after the match kicked off, greatly provoking South Korean fans and triggering the whole incident," it said. “Japan should stop highlighting the act by South Korean fans while ignoring the fact some Japanese waved the giant Rising Sun flag in the middle of the South Korean capital," the KFA said.AFP

Celtic can repeat Euro heroics, says Lustig ALISTAIR WATSON Agence France-Presse GLASGOW: Mikael Lustig (in pic) admits Celtic are determined to prove last season’s run to the last 16 of the Champions League wasn’t a one-off. Neil Lennon’s team are preparing to host Swedish champions Elfsborg in the third qualifying round of this season’s competition on Wednesday after cruising past Northern Irish minnows Cliftonville in the last round. The Scottish champions earned over £20 million from last season’s run to the last 16, which included a famous group stage win over Barcelona. And Celtic’s Swedish

biggest things they achieved in their career so far and we all want to repeat that. “Of course, it’s always good to go back and play in Sweden and I want to see Swedish teams do well in Europe because it’s good for football in the country, but obviously this time I only want Celtic to go through in the tie." Elfsborg, who are already halfway through their domestic league campaign, sit fifth in the table. But the Swedish side are one of the more testing opponents Celtic could have drawn at this stage. Lennon’s team, who kick-off their domestic title defence on Saturday, disposed of fellow Swedes Helsingborgs at the same stage last year.
But Lustig knows it’s important that the Hoops get off to a flying start at Parkhead and establish a significant advantage ahead of a potentially tricky return in Sweden. “Elfsborg are a good team with really good footballers who want to play football on the ground," Lustig said. “Their pressing is also good and they want to play good football. They also have a very good home record. “It’s really important to get a good first result. We want to get a good clean sheet at Parkhead as we know how important away goals are. “You don’t want to think too much about it but it’s our home pitch and we want to go and attack as well." AFP
