Exodus of students from Hyderabad?

HYDERABAD: Now here is an education bomb, triggered by the T-formation.

With the formation of a separate state, many of the established corporate colleges have been receiving requests from parents living in the Telangana region to shift their wards to some of the educational hubs in the Andhra region like Vijaywada, Guntur and Nellore.

In fact, they want these reputed corporate schools and colleges to open shop in Rayala-Andhra regions.

Since most of the leading educational institutions, especially in Hyderabad, are under the Andhra management, parents fear that the division of the State would affect the quality.

According to reliable sources, some of the private corporate colleges, institutions offering professional courses and some schools have already

started expanding their establishments in coastal Andhra region. Confirming this news, one of the principals of a reputed corporate college said, “Once the confusion between the two separated states is clear, we are expecting more students to shift

to the Andhra region, so we are considering expanding the number of institutions. The institutions will even spread in Andhra regions, which we have so far not ventured into.”

Though the government promised to bring out a separate

Act for the Andhra people residing in Telangana region, questions about whether the education sector would feature in the Act or not were also raised by educationalists.

Now that most of these educational institutions would shift their base to different regions in Andhra, there is a high possibility of disturbance in the educational systems and the academic year.

However defending this, TRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao, speaking to Postnoon, said, “So far, the people from Andhra region were dominating the private education (sector). Due to lack of funding and discrimination, the local institutions have been deprived the opportunity to grow. However, now the education sector will take a different turn and it will be for the good of the students and the State.”

HYDERABAD: Matinee idol and politician Chiranjeevi is not credited with great foresight, but he proved cent per cent correct in predicting one thing — the future of dynamic leader N Chandrababu Naidu.

While Naidu was on his extended padayatra, Chiranjeevi commented, “Naidu will only develop blisters on his sole. He will not return to power.”

Events that led to T-formation yesterday have placed Naidu in the most tragic Shakespearean character, King Lear’s shoes. Maybe he is in a more tragic state than Lear.

In the game the Congress played in the creation of T-state, the biggest loser is the TDP as it finds itself fallen between the stools. The man who is credited with giving Hyderabad a modern face is the most disappointed of all political leaders today.

The TDP’s unequivocal support to the T-state was a political folly, say observers of politics. Naidu had resisted the temptation all through but yielded to the pressure from the TDP camp in T and consented.

The party senior leaders say they never expected a sudden solution to T and so thought of taking a risk. But the gamble did not pay off. Now, at one stroke, one-third of its support base has been chopped off.

here are many front-runners for the CM’s post in T. They are deputy CM Damodar Raja Narasimha, young and dynamic civil supplies minister D Sridhar Babu, Panchayath Raj minister K Jana Reddy and industries minister Dr J Geeta Reddy. TRS president KCR is unlikely to become the CM as he always maintained that the first CM of the Telangana would be a Dalit.

HOW THEY PLAYED AND SCORED/LOST The Congress played a crafty game, hoping to merge with TRS and capture the whole of Telangana region for the 2014 elections.

Its calculations are that it would walk away with 10-12 of 17 Parliamentary seats from T. As for Seemandhra, the Congress will

absorb the YSRC, which is expected to sweep the region. Making Jagan Mohan Reddy chief minister after polls will end all fracas: Om Shanti!

TRS will have little reason to exist after the T-formation and therefore would either become an ally of Congress or merge with it. Its leaders have achieved what they wanted —positions — and the prize catch, Hyderabad. All’s well that ends well.

The YSRC has played safe. After seeing the first leg of panchayat poll results, the party thought it prudent to disown Telangana and butter its places of strength — Rayala and Andhra. The party is in a win-win situation as it can mop up maximum number of Assembly seats and Parliament seats to either bargain with the Congress or merge with it. It is in a situation predestined to win the lottery, either way.

The BJP has been supporting Telangana and it has zero presence elsewhere. It can keep Mahbubnagar and extend its influence. No one can prevent it.

MIM, which has some 38 lakh Muslim population spread over Telangana, is strong, besides Hyderabad, in Ranga Reddy, Medak and Nizamabad. The party will do anything to spread, though it had opposed T. Narrow-band has nothing to lose, it can only expand.

Leftists have no great presence. Their growth had long been stunted. The CPI struck up with T. Beggars are not choosers.

HYDERABAD: The announcement of the UPA government to create a new state of Telangana has come as a blow to the 450year-old historic city of Hyderabad. Though the terms of references are yet to be framed by the Centre for the administration of two new states with Hyderabad as the joint capital for a period of 10 years, the intelligentsia and politicians are clueless about the fate of Hyderabad in coming days after being elevated to joint capital status.

Their worries about Brand Hyderabad are many; revenue sharing, conduct of elections in the upcoming General Elections scheduled to be held next year, administrative issues, sharing of infrastructure, concern of longterm investments.

REVENUE SHARING This has become the most important and debated issue among Hyderabadis. Majority of the Hyderabadis are clueless about what kind of framework the Centre will have viz-a-viz revenue generated by Hyderabad.

According to an estimate, Hyderabad alone generates over `75,000 crore (IT and ITES services contribute `42,000 crore to State government) revenue for the State government through various taxes and fees. This is over 50 per cent of the total revenue of the State government.

The biggest issue that has now come up for discussion is whether the newly formed Andhra and Rayalaseema State would also claim a share from it.

Speaking to Postnoon, main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP)’s State organising secretary PL Srinivas, a blue-blooded Hyderabadi, said that he is clueless about what the Centre is going to do with the income generated from Hyderabad. He said that the revenue generated by the historic city should be spent on the development of Telangana region and added that not a sin-

for the entire City of Hyderabad by dividing the State. “The people of Hyderabad are in utter confusion. We don’t know what will happen to us as there is no clarity on our status as a joint capital,” he said. Senior Congress leader and chairman of AP Minorities Commission Abid Rasool Khan said that the Centre would announce a special package for the development of Andhra and Rayalaseema regions. The revenue generated

by Hyderabad will not be spent for the development of both the regions.

TWO CENTRES OF GOVERNANCE?

Cooler elements see the hurried division of Telangana as debilitating for the future of its star city, Hyderabad. Its growth is in all probability going to get stunted with two governments pulling it in opposite directions, scaring investors away. A beginning has already been made with parents asking corporate educational institutions to shift shop to Andhra.

Realty is in doldrums. But does anybody care?

There is also confusion over how the administration of the two newly formed states would be done from Hyderabad. How will the City accommodate two chief ministers and equal number of Secretariats, legislative assemblies and councils? The CM of which state will yield power from the existing Secretariat?

What would be his equation with his counterpart? According to Rambotla, it would be difficult for two CMs to function from the same City as there is a chance of ego clash between the two.

During the partnership summit last year, the State government entered into Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with 243 companies. These companies have pledged to invest a whopping `6.47 lakh crore over a period of time in the State.

Interestingly, a handful of these companies have plans to operate their businesses from Hyderabad. These investments promised creation of over 6,00,000 jobs for unemployed youth of the State.

LUCKNOW: Tension prevailed in the old city area here when members of two groups engaged in brick-batting and arson during a religious procession, police said today. The incident took place this morning when a procession to commemorate the death anniversary of Hazrat Ali, the son-in-law of the Prophet, was being taken out.

IMPHAL: Unidentified militants hurled a grenade at a brick farm in interior Thoubal district of Manipur but no casualty is reported, police said today. The militants lobbed the grenade and also a hand-written note yesterday at the brick farm owned by M R Gopi (43) at Phundrei Kombirei village, about 45 km south-east of here, they said.

LUCKNOW: A woman set herself and her eight-month-old and two-year-old daughters ablaze in Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh late Tuesday, police said. The woman took the extreme step after a spat with her alcoholic husband, who would often beat her up. While both the children died on the spot, the woman died en route to a hospital.

KOHIMA: Four persons have been sentenced by a court in Dimapur for gangraping a woman last year. The Dimapur district and session judge, S Hukato Swu sentenced three persons to 15 years rigorous imprisonment. Another person who did not commit rape but acted with the common intention was awarded 10-years rigorous imprisonment.

CHANDIGARH: A passenger was killed while some others were feared drowned as a bus fell into a canal near Sirhind in Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab early today.

The bus plying on Delhi-JalandharAmritsar route fell into the Sirhind canal on the national highway around 2am, Fatehgarh Sahib SSP Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said.

f Mohd Rafi were alive today, he’d be very glad of his massive popularity among melody lovers but would have shied away from attending parties or such melas. For Rafi was a simple soul who was not equal to the glitz of the cine world.

Hyderabad joined the rest of India in remembering Mohd Rafi on his 33rd death anniversary with Rafi ki Yaaden programmes, where his immortal songs were sung by his young admirers.

A tribute to the greatest singer of our times was paid by Muhammed Fahad and team at Nehru Centre. Rafi Foundation too commemorated his death anniversary, while hundreds of music lovers paid tribute to Rafi by organising his songs’ fests and listening to Rafi music all day long on radio.

SIMPLE SOUL

For such a titan in the film industry, it is surprising very little is known of this man, except that he was devoted to music and family, was a practising Muslim, and a lover of humanity. He is not on record having addressed a gath-

ering or given a media interview, not even a talk to Akashvani. However, some scribe is said to have asked him once what his main hobbies are. Giving out his winsome smile, he replied innocently — gaana aur khana!

Guinness Book records. He had sung for all the music directors of his time, but it was Naushad who gave him big break. He also had a great relationship with composer OP Nayyar.

Rafi’s mellifluous voice, his ability to twist and twang the song to suit the actor, enthrals millions even 33 years after his death. It is no exaggeration to say that if radio stops playing Rafi songs, it would be reduced to a cinder box. His voice is divine, and till he lost the sweetness of his voice in the late seventies, he remained the king of melodious voices.

ow, division causes heartbreak. A farmer from Kadapa district is reported to have died of a heart attack yesterday as he was watching the news about the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh on television.

Mahaboob Basha, 48, a resident of Rayalapantula Gari Palli near Alankanupalli, died of a heart attack soon after watching news of the State’s bifurcation, his family members said.

The family said that Mahaboob Basha, after completing work in his farm near the Kurnool-Kadapa canal, came home and began watching news on television.

Soon after watching news about AP’s bifurcation, he collapsed and was taken to hospital, where he was declared dead. It is however not clear if he was an avid Samaikhyaandra supporter. But family members say he had no history of heart ailments and he appeared very dejected at the division of the State as he has family scattered throughout AP.

Much of China is in the grip of a summer heatwave, and the China Meteorological Association issued a high temperature warning for several eastern and central provinces, saying temperatures could reach 41 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

Prevention, said there had been at least 10 victims of heat stroke up to last Friday. He declined to give a more precise or more recent number.

But the English pundit has a plan to change that. “It is going to be tough,” he said. “Children here have not been given basic football training — dribbling, controlling, passing, spotting the ball and hopefully if we train up children properly, the future will be taken care of and there will be skilled footballers for the future national team.”

But Masefield thinks it’s gonna be tough for his mate. "For David, he has a lot of tough decisions to make, as Rooney made it clear he doesn’t want to stay. It's a big task for David.”

KATHMANDU: The tiger population has zoomed by more than 50 per cent in Nepal but the big cat still faces plenty of dangers.

The government Monday came out with its latest tiger census, putting their number across the country at 198. This is a rise of

63 per cent compared to 2009 when the last count was taken.

Although Nepal had vowed to double the tiger population by 2022, illegal trade with China and India, uncontrolled poaching, habitat disturbance and conservation are the major concerns.

BEIJING: The pandas, the pride of China and a species most in danger of going extinct, will be getting their own television reality show with one TV channel recording their activities 24 hours a day, China’s state-run CCTV television network

announced Monday.

The Giant Panda Channel, which currently is available only via the Internet at ipanda.com will use video taken by 28 cameras that have been set up in the animals’ main preserve, located in the central city

of Chengdu.

Viewers can choose to see images taken in six areas, including the site where the baby pandas are raised and the spot where the twin cubs are living. Twins are frequent occurrences in these animals when

artificial conception techniques are used.

The channel will officially begin broadcasting in August, although it has begun experimental operations over the past few weeks, and during that time it has attracted some 15,000 viewers on the web.

It is possible that the channel may offer images of the baby pandas Po and De De, who were born in the Madrid Zoo but who travelled in May to China to live permanently.

Pandas, which can only be found in China in the wild, are in danger of extinction due to the reduction of the mountain forests where they live.

“That is why the president has called for a revenueneutral simplification of our business tax code to eliminate loopholes that encourage companies to ship jobs overseas and establishes a top tax rate of 28 per cent,” it said.

PARIS:European aerospace giant EADS on Wednesday posted a 14 per cent jump in second quarter net profits to 518 million euros ($686 million), and said it would change its name to Airbus, its better-known subsidiary.

“The renaming simply gathers the entire company under the best brand we have, one that stands for internationalisation, innovation and integration — and also for some two thirds of our revenues,” said the company’s CEO, Tom Enders. “It reinforces the message that ‘we make things fly’.”

JPMorgan will pay a civil penalty of $285 million to the US Treasury and disgorge $125 million in unjust profits, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission said in a statement. The settlement is among the largest on record for FERC. Liechtenstein bank pays US $23.8 million for tax evasion NEW YORK CITY: A Liechtenstein bank has agreed to pay $23.8 million to the US to avoid prosecution for helping Americans evade taxes, officials announced on Tuesday. Preet Bharara, the US Attorney, said the Vaduz-based bank, Liechtensteinische Landesbank AG (LLBVaduz), had agreed the payment under a “NonProsecution Agreement.” The deal means the bank will not be criminally prosecuted for opening and maintaining undeclared bank accounts for US taxpayers from 2001 through 2011.

WASHINGTON: Wyeth Pharmaceuticals has pleaded guilty to misbranding a drug that prevents the rejection of organ transplants and agreed to pay $490.9 million, the US Justice Department said Tuesday. The $490.9 million will resolve Wyeth’s criminal and civil liability stemming from the unlawful marketing of the prescription drug Rapamune for uses not approved as safe and effective by the US Food and Drug Administration. In 1999, Wyeth received approval from the FDA for Rapamune use in renal, or kidney, transplant patients. The immunosuppressive drug prevents the body’s immune system from rejecting a transplanted organ. Wyeth was accused of training its Rapamune sales force in the United States to promote the use of the drug in non-renal organ transplants and encouraged them to offer financial incentives to target all types of transplant patients to boost sales.

esperate for political survival in the State, the Congress has conceded to the longstanding demand of a separate state of Telangana. As the region celebrates the ‘miracle cure’ for all ills ailing the region, little is being said of the gargantuan problems that await.

The joint capital from where two chief ministers will rule will present the contentious issue of who has the final word in the administration of the City — especially when it accounts for at least 55 per cent of the revenue generated in the State. It also poses questions on sharing of this revenue as bulk of this comes from investments of people from Seemandhra.

One cannot also discount the practical difficulties of governing the newly formed state for 10 years from a capital landlocked a few hundred kilometres in the heart of another state — this is going to be nothing like Chandigarh which is located on the Punjab Haryana border. Least spoken of is the colossal sums that need to be spent for division of resources, the inevitable litigations, administrative reorganisation. If creation of new states could solve the problems of the marginalised and under-represented, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand would have been the crown jewels of the country. Instead they represent the nadirs of everything that could go wrong with a state.

Expectations are high, margin for error is low: a true agnipariksha awaits the estranged siblings.

ears that President Robert Mugabe allies will rig Zimbabwe’s election on Wednesday have prompted a citizen army of blogging, tweeting poll monitors.

Pressure groups and a cult ‘mole’ blogging from inside Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party have promised to report and colate any accounts of abuses and voting irregularities across the country.

Already a popular Facebook blogger, Baba Jukwa -- or Jukwa’s father -- is promising to release election results before the official announcement.

The anonymous blogger has received a cult following for exposing Mugabe government secrets, at times giving out mobile telephone numbers of prominent people asking ordinary people to call them to tell them they know what’s going on.

The law states election results must only be announced by the chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

Mugabe has gone as far as to threaten his rival Morgan Tsvangirai with arrest if he declares the results before the

ZEC. But with rumours rife that the military will get a sneak peak at the results before they are released to the world, Baba Jukwa’s tally could be explosive.

Already Baba Jukwa has attracted over 300,000 Facebook followers since he started exposing what he calls “evil deeds” of Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party and their purported plans to rig polls.

“Zimbabwe I would like to announce to you that I will be official, giving you results and outcome of the election,” Baba Jukwa posted on his page on Monday.

“I will as well announce the winner without fear or favour despite the unfair and not free environment.”

Meanwhile non-governmental organisations such as Sokwanele and the Election Resource Centre (ERC) are planning to update people on what will be happening during the voting day through their websites, twitter and Facebook.

“We are engaging the people through social media so that we tap what will be happening from the good, bad and ugly things on this election,” said Tawanda Chimhini, the director of the Election Resource Centre (ERC).

“We will be using social media from Facebook,

WhatsApp and email to expand the power of the people.”

“This is our small way of engaging the people to expand the power of the vote and that people will not merely be voting only but they also interrogate what will be happening.”

He said information that will be shared include results that will be posted outside polling stations.

“It is legal, nothing stops us from doing that,” Chimhini said. The ERC has deployed 210 mobile observers in all of the country’s constituencies to monitor the elections.

Although only a fraction of Zimbabwe’s population have access to Internet or data services, the opposition has

accused Mugabe’s government of trying to prevent the spread of information.

“They have started interfering with mobile Internet so that there will be no movement of information,” said Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora.

“They have also started interfering with Whatsapp as well as bulk sms. This is meant to slow down information during and after the voting process,” he added.

“It is certainly the state security agency, the CIO (Central Intelligence Organisation). We know these are people who want to rig elections.”

As the main party in the United Progressive Alliance have agreed to the creation of a separate state for Telanganites, the pall of uncertainty that hung over them for almost half-a-century has disappeared. However, along with it comes several challenges that need to be addressed. It is most important that in these moments of celebration we do not forget those. The decision has already set off several tongues wagging, some which matter, some rabble-rousers and panic-mongers. The key is not to be distracted and give into cheap theatrics of venting pent-up frustration on unsuspecting citizens that have come and settled here from other parts of the state. Meanwhile, needless are comments like those of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that the decision to create a separate state will trigger a dangerous trend that if you agitate and if you agitate long enough, separate states could be created. Prevent that itch in your throat STAY WELL HYDRATED

If you are a person who loves to sing or does scores of presentations and talking on a daily basis, then you surely know how badly the throat is abused. Here are steps that can be taken to prevent throat problems and maintain a healthy voice.

Keeping your body well hydrated by drinking plenty of water each day (6-8 glasses) is essential to maintaining a healthy voice.

The vocal cords vibrate extremely fast even with the most simple sound production; remaining hydrated through water consumption optimises the throat’s mucous production, aiding vocal cord lubrication. To maintain sufficient hydration, avoid or moderate substances that cause dehydration. These include alcohol and caffeinated beverages (coffee, tea, soda). And always increase hydration when exercising.

DO NOT SMOKE It is well known that smoking leads to lung or throat cancer.

Primary and second-hand smoke that is breathed in passes by the vocal cords, causing significant irritation and swelling of the vocal cords. This will permanently change voice quality, nature and capabilities.

DO NOT ABUSE OR MISUSE YOUR VOICE Your voice is not indestructible.

In everyday communication, be sure to avoid habitual yelling, screaming or cheering. Try not to talk loudly in locations with significant background noise or noisy environments. Be aware of your background noise — when it becomes noisy, significant increases in voice volume occur naturally, causing harm to your voice. If you feel like your throat is dry, tired, or your voice is

becoming hoarse, stop talking. To reduce or minimise voice abuse or misuse, use nonvocal or visual cues to attract attention, especially with children. Try not to speak in an unnatural pitch. Adopting an extremely low pitch or high pitch can cause an injury to the vocal cords with subsequent hoarseness and a variety of problems.

MINIMISE THROAT CLEARING Clearing your throat can be compared to slapping or slamming the vocal cords together.

Consequently, excessive throat clearing can cause vocal cord injury and subsequent hoarseness. An alternative to voice clearing is taking a small sip of water or simply swallowing to clear the secretions from the throat and alleviate the need for throat clearing or coughing. The most common reason for excessive throat clearing is an unrecognised medical condition, causing one to clear one’s throat too much. Common causes of

John turned producer with Vicky Donor, which went on to taste box-office success as well as acclaim with a National Award. His next movie Madras Cafe is ready for release.

“As a producer, I’m not interested in commercial success.

What matters is to be critically acclaimed. Vicky Donor was a different film and Madras Cafe is very different from Vicky Donor.

So, as a producer, I want to make different and credible films, which will live on your DVD shelf and should be worth it,” John told IANS. The actor, who also stars in Madras Cafe, directed by Shoojit Sircar, says the movie is made in a basic budget, but it looks like an expensive film.

“This film is a political thriller. It is made in a basic budget, but it will look like a `50 crore film,” he said.

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Devvarman dethrones defending champ WASHINGTON: Indian qualifier Somdev Devvarman (right) eliminated defending champion Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) on Tuesday at the $1.76 million ATP and WTA Washington Open.

Following her victories at the Kraft Nabisco, LPGA Championship and US Open, the addition of a first British Open would rewrite history.

“It is nice to be back here

in Scotland with three major victories,” said the 25-yearold from Seoul. “There is a lot of pressure and everyone is talking about me trying to make it four in a row. But I’m getting used to it and once I am on the course I only think about golf.” she added.

Els confirms participation in Macau Open

HONG KONG: Four-time

Major winner Ernie Els has confirmed he will take part in the $800,000 Venetian Macau Open for the first time in October. Els, who has notched up dual wins at both the US Open and the British Open, will be seeking to continue a run of recent good form following a June win at the BMW International Open in Munich.

Els is a regular on the Asian circuit and will be hoping to add the Macau trophy to two previous Tour wins, at

the 2005 BMW Asian Open in China and the 2005 Qatar Masters. “I am excited to be playing in Macau. I have never been there before but have heard many good things about the tournament as well as the city itself,” he was quoted as saying in an Asian Tour press release.

New DRS feed to be trialled in third Test MANCHESTER: This week's third Ashes Test will see the International Cricket Council (ICC) trial an independent television feed with the aim of improving its controversial Decision Review System.

DRS, designed to eliminate the "howler" by on-field umpires, has been at the centre of several controversial decisions in the first two Test of the Ashes, both of which England have won to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Former Australia captain Ian Chappell has been among those leading calls for the system to become a fully independent operation and not, as is currently the case, be reliant on the technology of the host broadcaster.

NEW DELHI: Indian bowler S Sreesanth (right) and 38 others were charged Tuesday over a spot-fixing scandal in the Indian Premier League that has rocked the sport, a prosecutor said.

Indian prosecutors filed charges in a New Delhi court against the 39 alleging links to organised crime during this year's edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a Twenty20 competition.

"The players and others have also been charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating and dishonesty," special public prosecutor Rajesh Mohan told AFP. Two of Sreesanth's teammates from the Rajasthan Royals franchise, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, were also charged along with bookmakers and underworld figures.

They were charged under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, Mohan said.

The three players were arrest-

ed in May along with scores of bookies as part of a police investigation into the spot-fixing scandal, which has caused outrage among fans in the cricket-mad nation.

India's cricket officials launched their own investigation into a separate betting scandal in the IPL, which prompted the country's cricket chief N. Srinivasan to step aside last month pending the outcome of

the probe.

In a further twist to the scandal, the Bombay High Court on Tuesday ruled that the probe itself had been illegal, throwing into question the return of Srinivasan. He stepped aside temporarily as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after his son-in-law was arrested, and later released on bail, over alleged links to illegal bookmakers.

The Korea Football Association (KFA) issued a statement Wednesday insisting that Japanese fans waving a large “rising sun” Japanese military flag had incited South Korean supporters at Sunday’s East Asia Cup tie in Seoul. The home fans had unfurled a giant banner in the first half that read: “There is no future for a people that have forgotten history” — a reference to Japan’s 1910-45 occupation of South Korea.

Many South Koreans believe Japan has failed to atone for abuses during the colonial period which remains a constant source of tension between the two countries. The banner was taken down at half-time, but Japan’s foot-

“Of course, it’s always good to go back and play in Sweden and I want to see Swedish teams do well in Europe because it’s good for football in the country, but obviously this time I only want Celtic to go through in the tie."

Elfsborg, who are already halfway through their domestic league campaign, sit fifth in the table. But the Swedish side are one of the more testing opponents Celtic could have drawn at this stage.

Lennon’s team, who kick-off their domestic title defence on Saturday, disposed of fellow Swedes Helsingborgs at the same stage last year.

But Lustig knows it’s important that the Hoops get off to a flying start at Parkhead and establish a significant advantage ahead of a potentially tricky return in Sweden.

“Elfsborg are a good team with really good footballers who want to play football on the ground," Lustig said.

“Their pressing is also good and they want to play good football. They also have a very good home record.

“It’s really important to get a good first result. We want to get a good clean sheet at Parkhead as we know how important away goals are.

“You don’t want to think too much about it but it’s our home pitch and we want to go and attack as well."
