INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Despite the historic marathon padayatra by Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president Nara Chandrababu Naidu, the party cadres are unenthused, reports say.

Loyalists of the party in the districts are said to be worried to the core as they believe one more defeat in 2014 will bury the party forever. And yet, Naidu’s trusted inner circles are debating if Lokesh is a threat to their growth instead of revamping cadres and network across the State.

“What did Lokesh do?” asks a senior party MP and a wellknown industrialist who is unhappy at the promotion of Lokesh in the lines of Akhilesh in UP. “Akhilesh proved his mettle but what did he (Lokesh) do?” He is unconvinced. “With this sort of inner circles, Naidu does not need enemies,” remarks a party MLA who was present when the TDP MP made this remark.

Majority of the party cadres still feel that the party has to do a lot of things in order to become a dominant force. This time, the party has to face a powerful rival, the YSR Congress, in Rayalaseema and Andhra, while its hopes of making it up in Telangana does not seem to be working.

The grassroots leaders are citing the desertion of scores of party MLAs from Telangana, Andhra and Rayalaseema regions as a sure sign of lack of mass trust in the party. “Since the last General Elections, many of our MLAs left us, protesting

“The TRS continues to attack us despite our efforts for the cre-

ation of separate Telangana state. We submitted a letter to the Union government reiterating our stand on the separate state issue during the all-party meeting held by Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde in December last year. But we are unable to convince people of the region about our commitment to the creation of a separate state by countering the false propaganda of the TRS. “This is giving a wrong image of our party among the four and half crore people of Telangana,” another TDP leader from Telangana region lamented.

Party cadres with no worthwhile directives on how to counter rival propaganda and endear themselves and the party to the voters remain floating without a purpose.

“Our party has lost elections for two consecutive terms. A defeat for the third time in a row would lead to its exit. In spite of knowing this, the leadership of our party is the captive of a few selfish men who think money will compensate for the lack of network and goodwill.

“They forget that NTR began with an empty pocket, not knowing how to meet the printing cost of the posters but he captured the hearts of Telugus and that made all the difference,” remarks another dejected party loyalist from Khammam.

God save our party, was the cryptic comment of a Rajya Sabha MP from the TDP. He is worried that Chiranjeevi’s comment in jest that Naidu will end up with blisters on his foot may turn out to be true.

CHICAGO: A drug already approved for treating kidney cancer was successful at delaying the return of advanced ovarian cancer by an average of nearly six months, a clinical study released Saturday found.

About 70 per cent of patients with advanced ovarian cancer experience a relapse following surgery and chemotherapy and need to resume aggressive treatments. The deadly disease’s cure rate is just 20 to 25 per cent.

Researchers found the GlaxoSmithKlein drug pazopanib extended the median time to disease worsening to 17.9 months compared with 12.3 months for patients given a placebo. Pazopanib is an oral drug that blocks targets involved in the growth of tumors and their blood vessels.

MIRA OBERMAN feedback@postnoon.com CHICAGO: There is no need for patients who have developed cancer from an oral HPV infection to refrain from sex with their spouses or longterm partners, according to a study out Saturday.

The study found that the spouses of patients with oral cancer caused by HPV did not have a significantly higher risk of developing the disease than the general population.

“Couples who have been together for several years have likely already shared whatever infections they have and no

changes in their physical intimacy are needed,” said lead author Gypsyamber D’Souza, an epidemiology professor at Johns Hopkins University.

Long-term partners have likely already been exposed to the virus and managed to “clear” it, D’Souza explained but added that “certainly, with new sexual partners, caution is always advised”.

Fear of transmitting the virus can lead to anxiety, cause couples to curtail sex and even

result in divorce.

The study presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual meeting is the first to examine HPV infection among patients with HPV-caused oral cancer and their spouses.

Researchers took oral rinse samples from 166 cancer patients and 94 of their spouses and partners.

It is unlikely, D’Souza said, that patients with oral cancer would put their spouses at risk of cervical cancer.

“There’s no known evidence that HPV can be transmitted from saliva to the genital area,” she told reporters. AFP

HYDERABAD: Those who gained in life from cinema are the least committed to save the cinema theatres. But the City is still richer than others when it comes to number of theatres.

Post Independence, Hyderabad had two features — its politics and love for films. In fact, a political party was sired by cinema theatre — the TDP. The City was once dotted with theatres, which were the most popular landmarks. “You asked your way referring to a cinema theatre, not the road name or any other institution,” recalled Ramakrishna JR, a travel operator in Lakdikapul.

It is because the City was rich in cinema that it is still left with 113 despite an equal number giving way to multiplexes and malls, while other cities are left with a dozen or so.

Old-timers recall the famous theaters of their time such as Anand, Sangeet, Basant Talkies, and Liberty. These have shut

‘Urge to live keeps me motivated’ Coping with cancer changes your life in many ways. RJ Singh Oberoi, who believed in living life to the fullest, was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer. This is a story of his battle with cancer, in his own words.

HYDERABAD: The first time I vomited blood was in December 2011 after a flight journey. But I thought it was nothing serious, confusing it for the side-effects of a jet lag. I was in Delhi in January 2012 and my uncle goaded me to undergo a medical check-up because it continued and also had a nose bleed many times.

Nothing showed up in the results. I was feeling healthy again for a bit and they said maybe it was just stress. My friends and family knew I was vomiting blood still and in April, when I was in New York for work, I went to the hospital for another medical check-up.

Sometimes I had chest pain, so I told the doctor about that too.

After a CT scan, he told me there is a blockage in my heart and it could be dangerous.

They were wrong as they finally diagnosed me with cancer — cardiac sarcoma — though in the first stage. To be honest, I couldn't believe it and just laughed it off. I went to a wedding in London in May where I also made an appointment for a second opinion, but the doctors diagnosed the same.

Still, I was very cool because I didn't realise that I was diagnosed with a very rare type of cancer. But I hid my diagnoses

for more than a month. The woman I love was on vacation in Istanbul at that time. I told her it was nothing serious.

I had to undergo surgery to remove the tumor, followed by radiotherapy. There was a time when the doctors didn't know how to treat my disease and they even told me they can't cure it.

Post surgery, the first two times I went for a check-up, they told me it had spread. However, the third time they gave me the clean chit. I’ve been told it may cause heart diseases later in life, but for now, I’m just trying to live one day at a time. At present, I’m undergoing my second session of radiotherapy; the first day always feels worst. I am also in therapy to 'teach’ how to cope with cancer.

I went to a naturopath who is helping me gain strength and faith in difficult times. Because of my Indian roots, Ayurveda is very close to my heart. It helped me assuage my mental, emotional and physical stress. For two months, every day, I had a session, which included warm oil massage and Yoga. The specialist advised me to meditate to relieve stress and pain.

What I miss most is my nor-

I am a Hindu and the philosophy, scriptures and teachings help me cope with cancer. I grew up with both Islam and Hinduism, as my mother was a Muslim and my father a Hindu. I embrace all faiths — as a Punjabi, Sikhism is very close to my heart too. I'm planning a trip to India, to visit a few shakti peethas, mandirs, mosques the Golden Temple and Ajmer Sharif, a Sufi Shrine.

Besides, my family is there for me, always. We are five siblings and we had a hard time, losing our parents and close family members — but we stand united. It was a shock for them to hear that their brother, who is always full of fun, has cancer. And yes, there is someone special who keeps my heart beating, though we parted. She told me once: “Life isn't always easy. There are obstacles and road blocks; but that's what life is about.”

The compelling urge to live life keeps me motivated for now.

Police fired tear gas and water cannon Sunday at protesters who marched on Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s offices in Istanbul and Ankara.

“Dictator, resign!... We will resist until we win,” yelled the crowds, in the latest of a string of protests that have by some accounts left hundreds injured.

Police had withdrawn on Saturday from Istanbul’s main Taksim Square, the symbolic heart of demonstrations that started over an unpopular building project nearby and boiled over into a general protest against the government.

Crowds of whistling, flagwaving protestors continued to cover Taksim Square but the flashpoint shifted late Sunday to the area near Erdogan’s nearby Istanbul base.

ith every passing year the competitive exams in the country seem to be getting tougher. The maiden year of the JEE Advanced exam conducted yesterday after the change in the IIT admission process by the human resource development ministry last year was quite tough for majority of the candidates who wrote the exam.

Since most of the sections in the paper included negative marking, students who appeared for the examination felt scoring high would be difficult.

Though the paper was for 360 marks, each half being 180 marks the cut-off this year could be less than 100 said experts.

What made the paper trickier was that multiple choice questions too had negative marking.

“Considering the paper was difficult this year the topper of the JEE Advanced this year will score with an average of 73 per cent,” said Chandan Dikshit the Planning and Strategy Head at Rao IIT Academy.

Some students felt Mathematics in Paper 1 was tough. B Ajit who appeared for the exam from the City said compared to physics in Paper 1, Mathematics was difficult. “I found the math paper too lengthy and was not able to

answer all the questions.”

Lakhs of students in the country including 21,000 engineering aspirants from Andhra Pradesh wrote the examination on Sunday which was conducted smoothly.

Clearing the JEE Advanced exam will give them entry into Bachelors in Engineering, B Tech and architecture courses at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Delhi Technological University, and other centrally funded technical institutes (CFTIs).

Presently there are 9647 seats in the 16 IIT’s and the ISM Ddhanbad while there are 15,578 seats in the 30 NIT’s.

The results for the examination will be out on June 23.

Siddis of Hyderabad In the 18th century, a Siddi community was established in Hyderabad State by the Arab Siddi diaspora, who would frequently serve as cavalry guards of the Asif Jahi Nizam's irregular army. The Asif Jahi Nizams patronised them with rewards and the traditional Marfa music gained popularity and would be performed during official celebrations and ceremonies. The Siddis of Hyderabad have traditionally resided in the AC Guards (African Cavalry Guards) area near Masjid Rahmania, known locally as Siddi Risala.

Sheth reveals how the community, many of whose members live in poverty, has assimilated in India while keeping its distinctive culture alive.

At the book’s launch in Mumbai last month Sheth recalled her first brush with the community during a 2005 holiday in Gujarat state in western India.

“I first saw the Siddi in Sirwan, a village in the middle of the forest given to them by the Nawab (Muslim prince) ... in recognition of their loyal services," she said. “I was intrigued."

Estimated to number between 60,000-70,000 in a nation of 1.2 billion, the Siddi originate from a swathe of east Africa stretching southwards from Ethiopia.

The fiercely proud community discourages marriage to nonSiddis and outsiders are unwelcome, as Sheth found out when she was greeted by a group of young men eyeing her suspiciously at the entrance to another village, Jambur.

“If looks could kill, honestly, I would be dead. I could sense irritation, hostility, perhaps even resentment to this very obvious ‘outsider'," she said.

Two of those boys — “still angry and daunting” — would later turn up in a portrait shot by Sheth, their resistance apparently having faded over the five years she spent working on the project that blends portraiture and street photography.

Jambur would become an occasional backdrop to her photographs, all shot in black and white using a manual camera.

Often described as descendants of slaves brought to India

by Arab and other troops, the Siddi mostly live in villages and

towns along India’s west coast, with a few groups scattered across the rest of the country.

Anthropologist Mahmood Mamdani, a professor at New York’s Columbia University, says many came to India not as only as cheap labour but also as soldiers, with some rising quickly through the ranks and even acquiring royal titles Successive waves of migration saw Portuguese invaders bring slave-soldiers from modern-day Mozambique to India, Mamdani writes in an introductory essay to Sheth’s book.

“Their main attraction was not their cheapness, but their loyalty. In this context, slaves are best thought of as lifelong ser-

vants of ruling or upper caste families," he writes.

Those deemed most loyal were given land that is now home to villages inhabited exclusively by Siddis.

REINVENTING TRADITION

US-based academic Beheroze Shroff, who has studied the Siddi for years, told AFP that they, like other migrants, “have reinvented their traditions".

Shroff said that Gujarati Siddi Muslims in particular still practise “elaborate rituals and ceremonies, which involve drumming and ecstatic dancing called goma (a Swahili word that means drum, song and dance)".

Cairo commuters opt for Nile taxi It’s fast, it’s fun and most of all, it gives passengers a quick break from Cairo’s commotion.

JALIAN ZAYAN Agence France-Presse CAIRO: Whatever their social or political differences, Cairo’s residents agree on one thing: the traffic is a nightmare.

Increasingly desperate to escape the gridlock and pollution of the Egyptian capital, more people are now using the Nile for their daily commute to work.

A new taxi service that uses speed boats to whizz passengers up and down the river has proven the most exciting alternative for many a stressed-out Egyptian.

It’s fast, it’s fun and most of all, it gives passengers a quick break from Cairo’s commotion.

“I get to work relaxed — I’m not stressed, I’m not nervous,” says Ahmed Amin, 43, a father of two who used to spend nearly four hours a day getting to work and back before discovering Nile Taxi.

A 20-minute ride from the taxi’s southernmost stop in Maadi to Ramlet Boulaq further north, shoots past office towers and Renaissance-style villas — too fast to dwell on the murky river’s flotsam or the dilapidated shacks dotting its banks.

By July, the company plans to launch a fleet of low-emission boats, carrying 15 passengers each. The ultimate goal is to have 30 boats in two years, carrying 15,000 passengers a day.

CHICAGO: Three veteran storm chasers were killed while pursuing powerful tornadoes that tore through Oklahoma, a relative said.

Tim Samaras, his son Paul and storm-chasing partner Carl Young died Friday in a twister in El Reno, west of Oklahoma City.

“They all unfortunately passed away but doing what they LOVED,” the elder Samaras’s brother Jim Samaras said on his Facebook page.

But it is a relief for those used to taking road taxis at roughly the same price, or those tired of driving their own cars through traffic.

Amin, who works in the finance department of a Cairo-based international organisation, says the boat trips have cut short his commute by about 30 percent, “not to mention the effect it has had on my mood. My performance at work is better than when I was driving.”

From the boat, Cairo — a city of more than 18 million people — feels green, orderly and breezy. But just a few steps from the makeshift boat jetties, the traffic is so bad and the heat so stifling that motorbikes

take to the pavement and taxi drivers switch their engines off.

AN UNUSED HIGHWAY

Nile Taxi is the brainchild of Magdi Kirollos Ghali and Amr Aboul Seoud. The pair saw a business opportunity in the ancient waterway that would respond to the frustration of commuters while eventually easing traffic and alleviating pollution.

“We have a very big highway that hasn’t been used for years and years and years,” says Ghali.

The waterway has been used for fishing, for tourism, and even for watersports, but its potential for passenger transport has been underutilised, says Ghali.

The idea for Nile Taxi came about six years ago when the pair drew up plans for a comprehensive new transport system on the river.

Their vision included the reinvigoration of the current government-run Nile Bus which has been operating since the 1960s. It is cheap and there are many stops, but the boats are old and the routes not always reliable, passengers say.

Ghali, who has worked in the maritime business since 2001, says he and Aboul Seoud commissioned studies on Cairo’s transport, traffic, and pollution and travelled around world to acquire the know-how to set up their business.

They were just about to start designing their solar-powered boats when the 2011 revolution that ousted Hosni Mubarak brought their plans, and many new business ventures in the country, to a dead stop. But when things became “too unbearable” on the roads, they decided to go ahead with a modified version of their original plan, using three motorboats they already owned.

The National Geographic Society called Samaras “one of the world's bestknown storm chasers”, saying the 55-year-old spent the past two decades pursuing his passion. Samaras was also known as a star on the Discovery Channel’s show “Storm Chasers”.

In a post on Facebook four days before he died, Tim Samaras wished fellow storm chasers well.

“Everyone enjoy the chase — and hope that tornadoes wander over open country,” he wrote.

Caring for ‘invisible’ children The communist country of 89 million has some of the highest rates of child disability in the world — the legacy of decades of war, including use of defoliant Agent Orange.

The communist country of 89 million has some of the highest rates of child disability in the world — the legacy of decades of war, including use of defoliant Agent Orange — but experts say it is not equipped to provide adequate care.

At the Bo De Pagoda orphanage, where the baby was abandoned last week, dozens of disabled children — from teenagers with Down Syndrome to two-month-old blind babies — are cared for by a team of 34 volunteers.

“The parents leave the kids at the pagoda gate or abandon them at hospitals. With the more severely disabled ones, the families bring them here when they simply can’t care for them anymore,” volunteer Nguyen Thi Thanh Hue said.

Hanoi says up to three million Vietnamese people were exposed to dioxin in Agent Orange, and that one million suffer grave health repercussions today, including at least 150,000 children born with birth defects.

Even outside of institutional care, life is a daily struggle for Vietnam’s disabled children.

Linh Chi’s family say her grandfather was exposed to Agent Orange during the war.

She was born with no limbs and is often stared at and sometimes bullied at school.

“I just wish our community could pay her a bit of attention. It would boost her self-esteem.

Now she feels so different from everyone else,” her mother Trinh Ngoc Thuy said. “I really find it hard to answer her questions like: why am I like this? Why don’t I have arms and legs?

When will my arms get longer?” she said.

The family have received minimal support from Vietnamese authorities and say surviving on their joint income — she and her husband both work — of four million dong ($190) a month is hard.

Caring for a child with a disability places “an incredible burden” on families, UNICEF’s Lake said. UNICEF has a pilot scheme in Danang to provide day care to children with disabilities, which if successful could be expanded.

In the meantime, families must cover costs and take on the burden of care — such as that of Nguyen Phuong Anh, who has “Osteogenesis Imperfecta” or “brittle bone disease” which left her wheelchair bound.

Phuong Anh’s mother gave up her job to care for her disabled daughter, and has literally become “her legs” in order to allow the 16-year-old to attend a normal state-run school and live a full and active life.

“It is still hard because... the facilities and the platform at public school are not made for people in wheelchairs. That’s a fact in Vietnam and I just really hope for that to change,” she told AFP.

ndia, being a tropical country with abundance of sunlight, solar energy is apt to meet its energy requirements. The Centre recognised its value and started the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission to encourage offgrid and on-grid solar applications to make the country a global leader in solar energy.

Despite the policy seeking to encourage Indians to be selfdependent on energy needs using sunlight, many roadblocks need to be cleared.

“There are many solar companies listed as authorised vendors to offer solar energy products under the capital subsidy scheme. Some of them are selling the products without proper quality and service.

“Bringing inverter into the solar off-grid application bracket has helped these companies to push solar panels with lower capacity to charge batteries. The consumer does not get the

chance to find whether the battery is getting charged from solar panel or grid, as it draws electricity from the grid as and when required. This is a logic the customer never understands clearly and transparently.

Customers are getting cheated and are spending on high electricity bills despite their investments in solar applications,” says NMKD Sarma Ambatipudi, founder, Bharat Synergy.

Unlike solar panels, charge controller, battery and lights, these so called hybrid inverters do not have approval from Product Approval Committee (PAC) nor are they tested and certified by the Solar Energy Centre or accredited laboratories of SEC, MNRE. He further adds, “Although, there is a -year warranty on the product provided by authorised vendor under NABARD loan scheme, the existence of some of these companies is doubtful.

“If they shut operations during the warranty period, the customer cannot do anything.

orried its gastronomic reputation is being damaged by substandard eateries, France is considering banning establishments from calling themselves restaurants if meals are not made from scratch by in-house chefs. The move aims to crack down on the proliferation of restaurants serving boil-in-a-bag or micro-waved ready meals as restaurant-quality cuisine. But the proposal is facing resistance from some restaurant owners, who fear it will hurt the industry by driving up costs and are warning of major job losses. The proposal, from lawmaker Daniel Fasquelle of the right-wing opposition UMP, is to be put to parliament this month as an amendment to a new consumer-rights bill. It would limit the right to use the term restaurant to eateries where food is prepared on site using raw materials, either fresh or frozen.

Exceptions would be made for some prepared products, such as bread, charcuterie and ice cream.

The proposal comes after a Synhorcat study found that 31 percent of French restaurants are now serving industrially prepared food products instead of their own cooking. And experts suspect many more restaurants are using industrial food but not admitting it. Alain Fontaine, owner of Le Mesturet restaurant in central Paris, said the distinction is an important one.

“It means that we have chefs who develop recipes and prepare them, unlike those who have taken the decision to cut open bags and reheat,” he said.

Those behind the proposal hope to emulate a 1995 law that limited the use of the term bakery to establishments that prepared bread and pastries from scratch.

Such a time is foreseen in the familial structure of the future as the techno-scientific world races ahead. marriages and polygamy, instead of monogamy that results in a majority cases boredom and rancidness, too are in the offing.

No need to worry, for every age brings with it its own travails and ecstasies. Even moralities change with age as they are all human-made, not divine.

Sati, that infamous practice of Hindus to force the wife to be burnt alive or buried along with her husband was once considered a good wife’s dharma. We can’t even imagine such a practice today, can we?

Family, the foundation of present day life, is going to feel the shake to its foundations more than any other societal setup, say sociologists and scientists. There is no need to show anger or blame the young gen of insensitivity. Even religious faiths, that usually resist the most changes, will have to yield to new tenets

and beliefs if it wants to. So could we link the increasing domestic discord to the changing mores? Not necessarily.

INDIAN CONTEXT

I believe the Indian context is different, if not fundamentally, superficially. Our orthodoxy has roots several kilometres down the earth and uprooting it would be a hell of a task. There are inexplicable things that come to my mind. For instance, take that obnoxious practice called dowry. Today, when the girl child ratio is falling, one would have thought that this practice gets the boots but every day one comes across parental folly of pampering prospective bridegroom with costly gifts such as cash, diamonds, vehicles and gold. Why? Nobody thinks that this kind of practice is outright bribery and bribery

begets greed and greed knows no limit. Is there a wonder such men keep asking for more and make a girl’s life miserable? Our crime reporter was asked to find out if the police are booking both giver and taker of dowry and not just the takers. We found to our horror that not in once case did the city police think of at least putting the girls’ parents too in the dock for bribing grooms. After all, dowry is the girl child’s share of parental property, why should one give gifts to the boys?

Tailend: Futurists writers the world over predict that the family as we know it today will be extinct by the turn of the century. Wives will have far more freedom of choice than husbands as technology is making the father redundant! Well, well.

EDITORIAL IT’S RAINING IGNORANCE IN AP SCHOOLS

t’s the dawn of the academic year and there is no good news for needy schoolchildren. Though the AP government has initiated the Chaduvula Pandaga (education festival) last week to increase enrolment of children in government schools, by scrapping several programmes and stopping of funds for effective functioning of schools from this year, it is actually decreasing enrolments. The National Programme for Education of Girls at Elementary Level (NPEGL), which is aimed at reducing the dropout of girl students by providing them with job-oriented training courses, has been stopped by the Rajiv Vidya Mission (RVM) due to non-availability of funds. The NPEGL has been implemented from 2006 and it has helped girl students learn various job-oriented programmes along with education in

government schools. The authorities had even distributed sanitary napkins to adolescent girls in the schools free of cost. The government has also stopped the release of the teacher grant of `500 per month due to shortage of funds. Under the teacher grant, each teacher would prepare teaching and learning stationary material for use in schools. The government has also abolished appointment of Vidya volunteers in the schools where there are no subject teachers. A government that is harping on IT development should pay attention to the fact that 2,400 primary and high (government) schools, do not have class-four employees. In most of the schools, the teachers and students are forced to ring the school bell and clean the premises!

It surely is a commitment crunch and not the funds.

s spring signifies a new beginning, The Orange Leaf, a Non Governmental Organisation stays true to its name and works towards providing a fresh start to the underprivileged.

Varsha Gandikota, an 18-year-old girl founded this youth NGO in 2010 with just three members.

Today, with its branches spread out in Chennai and Delhi, it is an organisation of over 150 members. This NGO, which is run by teenagers, touches various spheres of social concerns like education, environment, animal welfare and health.

Varsha believes that the organisation plays a dual role in not only helping the deprived but also in providing a platform to all the youngsters who have the drive to do something for the society. Namrata Eyyuni, a 17-year-old, Head of the Environment Wing, says “I joined the organisation two years ago. The best part about working for a good cause is the blissful feeling that fills you after you help someone. Even if it is a drop in the ocean, the satisfaction is immense. It’s just inexplicable.”

This team organises a series of activities for the environment like plantation and cleanliness drives. They have even opened a few libraries in government schools. Besides visiting orphanages and running hygiene awareness campaigns, these youngsters also visit slums and villages to educate them regarding first aid, waste disposal and the other problems concerning the particular places. Under the Animal Welfare wing, the members work in coordination with Blue Cross and rescue abused animals.

The Orange Leaf is funded by their members’ contributions of `100 per year and they also organise small-scale fundraisers like arranging a bake sale or a cricket match.

20 volunteers are selected for this event and are presented with sixteen social concerns and are asked to come up with solutions and conceptualise it.

Painting blackboards at government schools, dehydration awareness campaign at Rasoolpura slum and donating medicines to village hospitals are few of the activities of this event.

Varsha reaches out to all the youngsters saying, “If you possess the drive to make a difference to this society, it’s time to capitalise it. There is no point in jointly pointing fingers at an issue as we all are stakeholders in it. Instead, it’s time to wake up and do something; it’s never too early or too late.”

The drama unfolded in the wee hours of Sunday, when Shekhar Kapur welcomed Kamal Haasan on Twitter. In fact, it was Shekhar Kapur who stated that it was indeed Kamal Haasan’s original profile and within seven hours, more than 8,000 people followed @maiamkhassan, the Twitter handle which the imposter was using. Several celebrities including SS Rajamouli, Harish Shankar and Nani formally welcomed Kamal Haasan on Twitter, but around 11 am, Kamal Haasan’s spokesperson, Nikil Murugan clarified that it was a fake account. “Dear All Kamal sir is not in Twitter...the I'd..@maiamkhassan..is fake and pls don't believe. legal action soon to the person who operates..(sic),” Nikil Murugan posted on Twitter. Soon after that, the imposter deleted the account and the drama came to an end. This isn’t the first time that someone has created fake accounts of celebrities. In the past, several accounts of Kajal Aggarwal, Shriya Saran, Tamannaah, Nayanthara and several other actors were created and some of the actors had to lodge a complaint to curb the imposters.

Currently, Kamal Haasan is busy shooting for Vishwaroopam 2 in Bangkok, where an action sequence is being filmed on the lead actors. Pooja Kumar, Andrea Jeremiah, Rahul Bose and Shekhar Kapur are reprising their roles in the sequel, along with Kamal Haasan. The film is likely to hit the screens later this year. Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan has reportedly agreed to direct a film which will be produced by N Lingusamy’s Thirupathi Brothers banner.

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

arilyn Monroe was one of the biggest and most popular stars who ruled the roost in the ‘50s. She was the queen of people’s hearts and everything she did, including her movies, affairs, photoshoots, made headlines in the ‘50s. Born on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles, her original name was Norma Jeane Mortenson and prior to her movie career, in 1945, she worked at Radioplane Munitions Factory, mainly spraying airplane parts with fire retardant and inspecting parachutes. One day, Ronald Reagan sent David Conover of the US Army Air Forces' 1st Motion Picture Unit, to shoot morale boosting pictures for the Yank Army Weekly and Conover spotted Monroe at the factory. Upon his advice, she bleached her hair and began her modelling career. By the time, she was ‘discovered’ by 20th Century Fox in the late ‘40s, Monroe had already been posing for several magazines and in 1953, she posed for Alfred Eisenstaedt, prominent photographer at Life Magazine. Her major breakthrough film was Billy Wilder’s Seven Year Itch, which released in 1954. It was during this film’s shoot that the famous skirt-blowing scene was filmed and it soon became an iconic image featuring Monroe. In later years, she acted in films like Some Like It Hot, The Prince and the Showgirl and The Misfits, which was her final film before she passed away in 1962. A lot has been written and discussed about Monroe’s films, her persona and the charm which has left a huge impression on the minds of moviegoers over the years.

Her personal life, on the other hand, is in complete contrast with her onscreen image.

Simon Curtis’ My Week with Marilyn, which was based on Colin Clark's The Prince, The Showgirl and Me and My Week with Marilyn — two diary accounts, which document his time on the set of the 1957 film The Prince and the Showgirl and the time he spent with Monroe, gives a fabulous insight into her insecurities, desire to break free and pursuit of happiness. The film is based on a real story which occurred on the sets of her British film The Prince and the Showgirl, where Colin Clark worked as an personal assistant to director and actor Laurence Olivier. Marilyn was always accompanied by acting coach Paula Strasberg and the former would suffer a series of nervous breakdowns throughout the shoot because of her inability to pull off her role with ease. In the end, after going through a lot of trouble to make her act, Laurence Olivier would exclaim, ’She's quite wonderful. No training, no craft, no guile, just pure instinct.

Roy’s boys dampen the samba rhythm RIO DE JANEIRO: England coach Roy Hodgson lamented a win that got away after his side gave World Cup hosts Brazil a fright Sunday in holding the five-time world champions to an entertaining 2-2 draw in a prestige friendly in Rio de Janeiro.

The visitors, victorious on their last visit back in 1984, when John Barnes famously clinched the win with a solo effort, were on the ropes in an absorbing first half which Brazil largely dominated, but held their own until 12 minutes after the restart when Fred scored for the South American giants.

But a neat strike from substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and then a rasping drive from Wayne Rooney turned the match on its head before Paulinho volleyed in eight minutes from time to level a contest held to mark the multi-million dollar refurbishment of the Maracana stadium.

“Some draws can be labelled victories and some draws can be labelled defeats,” said Hodgson afterwards.

“We played so well in the second half I thought we might hold on for the win but we were scotched by a wonder strike. We didn’t play anywhere near like we wanted to in the first half and Brazil did, so it was a fair result,” he conceded.

England beat Brazil in a Wembley friendly back in February which marked the return to the auriverde’s dugout of Luiz Felipe Scolari, the Brazilians’ 2002 World Cup-winning coach.

England held Brazil to a 2-2 draw in a scintillating match at the controversial Maracana stadium.

But the pressure has been heaped on Scolari, who has managed only a win over Bolivia in half a dozen matches during this second spell in charge, while the World Cup hosts have slid to 19th in the FIFA rankings — an all-time lowpoint.

US thwart late German fightback A brace by Clint Dempsey secured victory for the Americans over the world’s number two team.

JIM SLATER Agence France-Presse WASHINGTON: US captain Clint Dempsey scored two goals in the second half and the Americans held off a late comeback on Sunday for a 43 victory over second-ranked Germany in an international football friendly.

Tottenham striker Dempsey netted his 34th and 35th international goals in his 96th appearance for the USA, moving past Eric Wynalda into second on the all-time US scoring list, 14 shy of Landon Donovan’s record.

“Having a player like Clint Dempsey on your team is just a privlege,” said US coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

“This is one of the best players in US history. He has the hunger and the drive. He sends a message to his own players and also to the opponents.”

Hibbert was disciplined for “inappropriate language” after

Webb wins for grannie The Australian finished at four-under 209 in the $1.5 million event to post her first win on the LPGA Tour in over two years.

STOCKHOLM: Finland’s Mikko Ilonen claimed a first European Tour title in six years when he won the Swedish Masters by three shots on Sunday.

The 33-year-old Ilonen, the overnight leader who had finished second in China and Morocco earlier this season, hit a final round, threeunder-par 69 to bag a 21-under total.

That was three shots ahead of Sweden’s Jonas Blixt, with Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger sneaking third on 17 under.

Ilonen’s two previous victories on the European Tour came in 2007 -

Now, ahead of the Champions Trophy that opens in England and Wales this week, Dhoni has been burdened with another task — defending the alleged sins of his pay-masters.

Indian cricket was thrown into chaos last month when three players, including recent Test bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, were arrested for alleged spot-fixing during the glitzy Indian Premier League.

Further trouble mounted Sunday for the country’s powerful cricket chief, Narayanswamy Srinivasan, who stepped aside from his post while a police investigation over his son-inlaw Gurunath Meiyappan’s

links to illegal bookmakers remained ongoing.

Dhoni shares a special bond with Srinivasan, not only as captain of India and the Chennai Super Kings, but also as a vicepresident of India Cements, an appointment made earlier this year.

As he plots India’s strategy ahead of their Champions Trophy opener against South Africa in Cardiff on Thursday, Dhoni has also been busy fending off questions about the scandal back home.

The unruffled 31-year-old has done a good job of keeping cool till now, but it remains to be

seen how long he can maintain his composure.

“When the right time comes, I will answer it,” Dhoni said when bombarded with IPLrelated queries at his opening media conference in England last week.

“As of now, I want to keep our side away from everything.”

Fixing cloud looms over CT The IPL scandal has rocked the ICC who have considered scrapping the tournament.

SOUTHAMPTON: The world’s leading cricketers gather for the Champions Trophy in the UK that starts this week against the backdrop of a growing fixing scandal emerging from the Indian Premier League (IPL), which has already claimed several high-profile casualties.

It was just the sort of buildup the International Cricket Council (ICC) did not want ahead of a tournament which sees Pakistan returning to England for the first time since 2010.

On that occasion, three players including Test captain Salman Butt and paceman Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif were banned and jailed after being caught up in a newspaper sting operation to expose match-fixing.

Officials had wanted to scrap what is now the seventh and final edition of the ‘mini World Cup’ with an inaugural World Test Championship, in a bid to boost flagging global interest in the five-day game.

However, the ICC was compelled to press ahead with this Champions Trophy when they realised they risked contravening lucrative commercial agreements with rights-holders if they did not stage a one-day tournament in 2013.

Featuring just the sport’s top eight teams, with 15 matches to be played over 18 days from June 6-23, the Champions Trophy is now a leaner version of the World Cup.
