Freedom of speech and expression doesn't seem to be a fundamental right in India anymore. Time and again, filmmakers, writers and artists have come under fire for their work and the onus has fallen on our judicial system to resolve the issue. Here's a list of films, which had to be defended in the courts for various reasons ranging from politics to reservation.

n Karimnagar district, Tadagona Ajay, 21, a degree student of Gatla Narsingapur village under Bhimadevarapalli mandal, has committed suicide, said police. He was watching television at his home with his parents when he suddenly got up, went into the kitchen, poured kerosene on himself and set himself on fire. Shouting ‘Jai Telangana’ slogans, he ran into the streets. His parents followed him in horror. Unable to bear the pain, he plunged into an agriculture well. His parents also jumped in to save their son. Locals, who managed to pull out the three, could save only the parents. Srinivas was dead by the time he was taken out of the well. Srinivas left a suicide note, stating that he was ending his life as the Union home minister

Sushilkumar Shinde had not conceded Telangana on January 28. In Mahabubnagar district, Dinesh, 23, a BTech student of Achampet, committed suicide in Saroornagar in Hyderabad. Dinesh was a student of a private engineering college in Hyderabad. His father Ramesh is

his youth was a modest conman. He asked for just `5,000 as ‘medical and service charges’ for arranging job visas to the Gulf. Since the sum is not large, some 90 unemployed people willingly gave him the money. He then promptly vanished. His girlfriend, also his accomplice, says she does not know where he is. Mohd Ahmed, 28, a resident of Misrigunj, is an intermediate dropout. But he is gifted with a glib tongue and a posh appearance. He made full use of this, say Chandrayangutta police officers. He is said to have used the name of a reputed company in the UAE and Dubai and publicised that he had 80-90 job visas for various positions. He did not open an office, but operated with the help of mobile phone and e-mails. Nearly 100 people contacted him. He played a saint, saying he would not touch money and deal only with docu-

ments. “Only a fee of `5,000 for medical tests etc, you know,” he reportedly told his prospective victims. He had an arrangement with a doctor in Hafizbabanagar and asked applicants to go there for medical test. The clinic earned a good sum for nothing. The ritual gave applicants confidence and more came thinking what a stroke of luck they had. Once he conned around 90 to 100 people, he thought it was about time to vanish. As days went by and no news of the visas came, applicants began to ring him up. They got a switched off tone. Worried, some of them who had seen a woman, Roma, with Ahmed, approached her. She denied any link with him. Some of the victims swore before the police that the girl was with Ahmed and she knew about his dealings and perhaps, his whereabouts. Victims, who have no hope of the police nabbing him, say that if the police properly interrogate Ahmed’s family and the girl, he can be traced.

came back, Dinesh died by hanging himself from the ceiling fan. He wrote a suicide note, expressing hope that at least his death would achieve Telangana. He appealed to KCR to achieve Telangana without enforcing bandhs. Admitting that what he was doing was wrong, he appealed to others not to make the same mistake. Meanwhile, Mahesh, 27, a TRS activist of Nagampet village of Karimnagar district who set himself on fire, succumbed to the burns on Wednesday at a Sircilla hospital. Before his death, he gave a statement before a magistrate stating that he was ending his life only for Telangana. His wife Kavya has complained to the police that Union ministers Ghulam Nabi Azad and Sushilkumar Shinde were responsible for his death. On Monday, Bharatapu Chandrasekhar, 28 jumped under a train and ended his life at Mancherial in Karimnagar district.

n average of 6,000 pedestrians per hour will be availing the skywalk to be constructed between Secunderabad bus station and Rathifile bus terminus in Secunderabad. The proposal, awaiting approval of the general body, is likely to be endorsed at the meeting tomorrow. “This will surely reduce the congestion caused due to vehicular movement as well as ensuring safety of pedestrians, which has been the biggest concern for years,” said a senior official. With a proposed length of 450m, this skywalk is estimated to cost the GHMC `7.2 crore. After the Metro rail route was proposed from the gate of Secunderabad station to the clock tower, the basic design

was modified. Entry points will be from and opposite Rathifile bus terminal and the exit location will be Secunderabad railway station. Apart from two escalators, three single-flight stairways and two dog-legged stairways will be supporting the movement of pedestrians. This will be the first full-fledged, state-of-the-art skywalk in the City, officials claim. “The need for a skywalk was felt as the frequency of public transport operations is very high in this area. Presence of hawkers and shopping complexes along the footpath and inadequate width of footpaths was resulting in pedestrian spillover, which occupied a major portion of the carriageway. For years, this has been resulting in traffic congestion between Rathifile and Secunderabad bus termini,” explained the official.

EDUCATION Following the CM’s recent decision Telugu is going to be made compulsory from class I to class X in the State board. INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com

E

ducation in Andhra Pradesh is all set to undergo a sea change. According to a decision taken by the chief minister on January 28, the teaching of Telugu language is to be made mandatory from class I onwards in the State board. Kiran Kumar Reddy approved proposals to modify the existing teaching manual of the school education department, making Telugu and English languages compulsory from class I to class X. The modifications will come into effect in about one lakh private and government schools of the State. The main objective behind this decision is to promote the Telugu language in letter and

spirit. The other objective behind making these changes to the manual of the school education is to ensure the promotion of English language among all the children. According to the changes, which will soon become a Government Order, all English medium schools will henceforth teach Telugu as their first language and English as the second language. Whereas all Telugu medium schools will make English their first language and Telugu their second language. It may be recalled that in the existing system, Telugu is being taught from class VI onwards. While a section of society has welcomed the decision to promote Telugu language, there are several others who feel that the implementation of this new system will prove to be a threat to other regional languages like Urdu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi. Urdu, which is recognised as the second official language of the State in as many as 14 districts, is likely to be the most threatened. The reason for this is that the State has hundreds of Urdu medium schools in all the districts and is widely patronised by the minority community. “The proposed system of the State government will create

espite the Congress entangled in many messy issues, the party has come out strong in the first phase of the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS) on Thursday. Though the PAC elections are usually held sans party affiliations, political affiliation remains a reality. Of the tentative figures available now, a total number of 958 PACSs, supporters of ruling Congress Party bagged 565 Agircultural Cooperative Societies. The main opposition Telugu Desam Party stood second by winning 347 PACSs. Another rival party led by Kadpa MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy secured third place in the competition by securing 190 societies. While the ruling Congress party showed dominance in 14

of the total 22 districts where the elections were held, the TDP showed dominance in Guntur, West Godavari and Khammam districts. Both the parties fought a bitter fight in Ranga Reddy, Krishna, Vizag and East Godavari districts. The YSRC’s dominance was clearly seen in its strong bastion Rayalaseema districts like Kadapa, Anantapur and Chittoor dis-

tricts. However it could not secure majority seats in Kurnool districts The elections results of the first phase has not only boosted the morale of party cadres across the state but also help state cabinet ministers to prove their dominance in their respective districts. In Guntur district from where state cooperative minister K Krishna Reddy hails, the main opposition Telugu Desam Party showed its dominance by winning 32 PACs. The separate Telangana champion TRS showed its dominence in Medak district by outnumbering the ruling Congress party. The party had won 62 societies in the entire Telangana region. The left party CPI showed its dominance in its strong bastions Nalgonda and Khammam districts. National Party BJP too chipped in by winning six societies.

problems for all Urdu medium schools and Urdu language promotion in schools. The problem we face is that which language — Telugu or English — we should opt for. As per the government’s decision if we opt for Telugu as the first language, all Urdu medium students will be deprived of English language until they complete class V,” a correspondent of an Urdu medium school told Postnoon on Thursday. An Urdu language expert Syed Fasahath Ali felt that the government will encourage private schools to avoid Urdu and other languages teaching in their schools. When Postnoon tried to contact the school education department officials, they were clueless about the likely effect of the State government’s decision. “We are yet to discuss the issue. As of now, only the proposals have been approved. The government order related to the new modifications is yet to be issued. Once the GO is issued, we will think about it,” additional director of school education department Venkateswara Sharma told Postnoon. Similar is the condition of Hindi and other regional language medium schools. The fate of these languages is now lying in the hands of the State government.

LEGAL TTD executive officer’s absence irks CBI court

M

inister for Roads and Buildings Dharmana Prasad Rao (pictured) on Thursday appeared in the CBI Special Court in connection with the disproportionate assets case of Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. Dharmana Prasada Rao was named as accused number 5 in the chargesheet filed by the CBI in the Vanpic projects affair connected to the Jagan’s case. A former minister Mopidevi Venkataramana is also an accused in the case and he is now in judicial custody and lodged at Chanchalguda Jail.

The CBI had told the court on February 17 that there was no need for taking the permission from the government for prosecuting Dharmana as well as Mopidevi. Thus the arguments pertaining to the case commenced today. Meanwhile, the CBI court had taken strong exception to the absence of senior IAS officer LV Subramaniamin connection with the Emaar projects case. The IAS officer is now working as the executive officer in TTD. The counsel on behalf of the IAS informed the court that Subramaniam could attend the court because of his busy schedule of the TTD Board meetings. The magistrate then wanted the counsel to produce evidence as how many meetings were held in which the IAS Officer had participated and also on how times he had appeared in the court. The counsel assured the court that his client would appear during the next hearing. NSS

FAMILY COURTS

MoUs bring happy divorces

DEMOLITION DRIVE

As more and more couples choose to end an unhappy marriage, MoUs come in handy to prevent future legal wrangling.

ALEENA ALICE aleena.t@postnoon.com

G

oing through a divorce is not easy for any couple and the possible complications that arise afterward too are daunting. To avoid this situation, more and more couples seeking divorce are making use of the provision for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which will obviate future claims or counterclaims on property or other things. The MoU that is signed by the estranged couple before they approach the court is not limited to the settlement of the property, it also takes care of spousal interference after the divorce. “The MoU acts as a secondary piece of evidence and is a blue print at the time of getting a mutual divorce,” says advocate P Vishwajannani. According to advocates dealing with divorce cases in family court, couples would just approach the court directly for mutual consent and overlook many facts in terms of property, and guardianship of their children. “A recent case filed at the City family court had a couple who had been divorced for 10 years file a new case regarding property conflict. At the time of filing a divorce their only concern was separation. They did not consider settling the property matter or any other commitments. However, later the wife wanted a part of the property and the husband was not ready to give it. Later the wife had to buy the property from her husband because she did not want to part with it,” says advocate P Vishwajannani. To avoid such incidents, most couples these days who apply for divorce make sure they put down all their terms of compromise on paper and legalise it. “Though MoUs are not mandatory, both the parties want some sort of relief after the divorce so they make sure that they

sign an MoU,” says advocate CV Srinath. Estranged couples even go to the extent of making it clear that their ex will not interfere, if their ex gets re-married. “Recently, a couple who wanted to file a mutual consent entered into an MoU where the wife’s condition was that the husband gives her a lump sum amount as alimony and takes up the guardianship of their children even if she gets remarried,” says a senior advocate. Advocates these days are also taking the precaution to make the MoU a part and parcel of the orders passed in the court. The MoUs are now being made an annexure at the time of filing the divorce case. “The MoU if not registered will hold no value, hence the advocates will have to mark the MoU in the list of documents at the time of filing the divorce papers so that if one of the spouses change his mind later, the MoU will act as a valid piece of evidence,” says advocate P Vishwajannani.

t’s a scary prospect. Hyderabad will go dry in three years. The underground water table is depleting dangerously, thanks to indiscriminate water-drawing and destruction of surface water bodies, warn hydrology experts and environmentalists. The Joint Action for Water (JAW) an annual report and survey conducted reveal how criminal negligence of the civic body, HMDA, lake protection committees and government have led to this state. Convenor Dr D Narasimha Reddy of the JAW said, “In three years Hyderabad’s underground water would have depleted totally and irretrievably. The Rubicon has been crossed.” Reddy lamented, “The WALTA Act designed to safeguard water bodies is useless and without teeth. All municipal bodies, the HMDA and the Irrigation Department have been wilfully blind to the extent of borewell digging. Despite all this, the HMDA wants to bring in more people into the City as part of its Master plan for 2031.” The fact that none of the agencies claim responsibility over groundwater conservation was highlighted. Perhaps it was for this reason that the minister for administration and urban development chose to be absent from the press conference held by JAW recently. Going by the statistics released by JAW, amalgamated from the groundwater department, almost all parts of the City showed severe depletion of water levels. This does

not come as a surprise because the importance given to groundwater levels by the State is zero. For example, there is no mention of conserving groundwater levels in the 12th Five Year plan, despite the assurances that they are working towards water conservation. “No department claims responsibility over groundwater. If you need to pinpoint the responsibility you will end up running behind the GHMC, HMDA, Water Board, APPCB, Groundwater Irrigation and MA&UD. our administration so it is no surprise that Hyderabad’s groundwater levels, which are on the verge of drying up, will vanish in three more years!” says Reddy. While most agreed that the problem lay with the administration and legislature, some conservationists think that addressing the bigger problem of pollution itself was the solution. Speaking to Postnoon, KV Rao, an environmental activist and former merchant navy serviceman said, “I agree that this is a grave issue but the roots of

the problem lie within environmental pollution, especially the rain cycles that have been disturbed. We cannot always solely rely on groundwater, however rechargeable it might be, and we will, at some point, need to tackle the bigger problem of deforestation and the broken rain cycles.”

METRO RAIL LAND ACQUISITION

As part of the Musi River Conservation Project, patta lands in what is now the Nagole Railyard and Depot for the HMRL had belonged to farmers who would farm after the monsoons. Out of the 800 acres of land acquired from these farmers by the HMDA, about 100 acres was sanctioned to the HMRL by the HMDA. Now, all this transaction is against the Musi Conservation Project rules that prohibits any agency/company/governmental body from being sold or vice versa. CPI leader Chandrasekhar said, “It is the State government itself that is encroaching upon these lands and making it seem legitimate.” A plan to file a PIL fizzled out after activists realised that the HC would not entertain litigation. “After two PILs already pending in court, we decided that there was no point to file another and hope against all odds that our pleas will be heard,” said C Ramchandriah, activist. Average depth of water level in Hyderabad on February 2011 was 10 MBGL. The below data was measured by groundwater irrigation department using piezometers at different parts of the City over the period of two years.

LGBT RIGHTS

March to stamp out ‘stigma’ Hyderabad finally wakes up to LGBT rights and issues, with the City’s first ever queer parade set to take place this week. PADMINI C padmini.c@postnoon.com

FOR REPRESENTATION ONLY

S

ince 2008, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and even the uber conservative Chennai have successfully hosted gay pride walks. Smaller cities like Madurai, Trissur and Bhubaneswar soon followed. ‘Repeal the anti-gay laws in the constitution,’ and ‘de-criminalise homosexuality’ were their battle cries. The historic 377 ruling saw turbulent times finally emerge triumphant last year. But through all of this, Hyderabad maintained a stubborn silence. All that is scheduled to change. If everything goes according to plan, Hyderabad will see its first queer parade take place on February 3, 2012, at People's Plaza in Necklace Road. "We'd been trying to bring this into action for the past two years but it’s all worked out only now. It's going to be a peaceful parade and we are expecting to see around 1,500 – 2,000 people from all walks of life to support the cause," says G Krishna of

Suraksha, the NGO organising the event. The aim of the march, Krishna says, is to show support, create awareness and more importantly, sensitise people to the cause of Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights. "Sexual orientation should not be a stigma. Many,

many people who want to come out are scared of being shunned by family and friends, and therefore end up leading double lives or turn into sex workers and so on. So through this march, we are going to be asking for complete acceptance and equality for LGBT individuals in our society." Tejaswini Madhabushi, co-

organiser of the recently held midnight march is among the people mobilising forces for the queer parade. She is with many others who believe this is long due in Hyderabad. She says, "Compared to other cities in the country, we are long due and it's about time too. The LGBT community in the City aren't quite out there. Hopefully, that will change with this parade." So, are there any takers for the parade? "The initial response has been positive," she affirms. There are no specific estimates to take stock of the situation in Hyderabad. Back in 2000, Family Health International conducted a health mapping of the City and estimated that there were approximately 50,000 gay, bisexual and transgenders in the City. It was a conservative estimate then and an unreal one now. Various groups contest that the number has at least quadrupled in the past decade. Lizzie Horne, an international fellow at the NGO Asmita, is among the sure shot participants at the rally. "I am definitely going

and taking everyone I know with me. It's an important milestone that happened at last in Hyderabad and we should show support in any way we can," she states and adds, "It's 2013. The world's changing and so is Hyderabad. As a City that's large and booming economically, it also should be opening up socially. So let this be the first step." Organisers say that employees of corporate giants such as Google, IBM and Dell will participate in the event. But there are as many who feel they can't afford to attend. "As it is, I get harassed enough by friends and colleagues because of my mannerisms, that I am a ‘homo.’ If I am publicly seen at an event like this, it will be confirming their doubts and making my life a thousand times more miserable. So I can't go. Regardless, I am going to be cheering for everyone who walks at the queer parade because God knows, we needed something like this in this City," says Srikanth K, a City-based IT employee.

fter scores of music and talent reality shows doing the rounds, it’s difficult to believe in another so-called ‘platform’. However, the organisers of Runway JAM beg to differ. This, the team behind this venture says, is an event which brings together various music bands, vocalists, instrumentalists and musicians on a single platform, where you can not only project your musical talent, but also fuse it with other contemporaries. It’s the concept of jamming and fusion that makes this competition attractive. Here, one will get to blend notes, chords and tunes to create original fusion music. And the best of the bunch will get to win fabulous prizes and opportunities. Today, there is a lot of compe-

tition in this field. Gone are the days when singers and musicians had to circle music studios or spend time endlessly on reams of tape to get that elusive break. Now, there are song and dance reality shows. A song enters the

market and its covers flood the web the very next day. Avinash, one of the organisers of the event, tells us more. “Runway JAM encourages bands, stand alone musicians, vocalists, instrumentalists, irre-

spective of genre or style. Also, there is no stopping those hidden bathroom singers. There is no age limit. For the prelims, which will be held on Saturday, the Indus Gharana band will be the judge. After the prelims, vocalists, instrumentalists and bands will be put into groups. So, a carnatic vocalist can be paired with a rock band and the group will have to jam and produce something new. This will go on for two weeks, after which the finale will be held. The winners of the

event will receive `1.5 lakh cash prize, a Rockumentary and a promotional video made by Runway Reel. “Already, 60-70 participants from more than 10 City-based bands are registering themselves. Two bands from Bangalore are also expected to participate.” Sheetal Jha, one of the participants, says, “Runway JAM is something I am looking forward to. I am sure jamming will be a lot of fun. This is a great idea, allowing all genres of music to mix. This is one jugalbandi I don’t want to miss. I am a blues singer. I want to see who I am going to be paired with.” With entries pouring in, the organisers hope for a full house. Runway Reel is a company which offers a digital platform to talents of all kinds. Till now, their YouTube channel has supported aspiring filmmakers, musicians, actors and writers.

REPORTERS’ DIARY

Short-sighted planning by City fathers T

houghtless planning is what one must say, and it is how public money is wasted. Hardly two years ago, a foot over bridge was erected across the busy Begumpet Road at a cost of `1 crore (pictured below). Its future seems bleak now, with the Metro rail coming up under it. Most decidedly, the bridge may have to be dismantled. If only the City had taken all things into consideration before making an infrastructural move, it could have been avoided. But who cares? (SS)

‘I’LL BE BACK, DEARS’

The flamboyant cop, Dr Akun Sabharwal, who was shunted out of the City for allegedly crossing swords with his seniors (which he and his seniors deny, of course), swears he will return to the City after the general elections. While chatting with the reporter, it came out that his

heart was still in the City (he was DCP south, a delicate job he did with aplomb). “I earned a lot of love from the people and I too love them.” Now, heading National Police Academy, where new IPS recruits are trained, Sabharwal says he is keen to manage challenges and there is no bigger challenge than maintaining law and order in the Old City, is there? (MS)

CANCER-SCORPIO MATCH

When people meet these days in Hyderabad, the topic of discussion invariably turns to the vexed Telangana issue. While all sorts of theories are pounded, threshed and packed according to their taste, one question that puzzles many is why the Telangana issue never gathered steam during the long reign of the late CM YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Here again, there are those who put forth theories such as him being a cruel dictator

or a crafty man or benign being. But the reporter has found out quite another view which many have not examined: the astrological way. Those who subscribe to astrology believe in compatibility of the zodiac signs. Some are naturally compatible, some others repel. Well, the zodiac sign of Andhra Pradesh, going by its birth November 1, is Scorpio, and the zodiac sign of YSR (July 8) is Cancer. Astrology says the following about the two signs: “Most compatible zodiac sign for Cancer is Scorpio. Scorpio and Cancer share the quality of developing a strong emotional bond. Both are very emotional personalities with similarities in goals and temperament. The Virgo-Cancer match is also a good one (Kiran-AP). People from the Cancer and Virgo zodiac signs stay devoted to each other; the Virgo should, however, at

times keep aside his/her practical approach towards life.” Now you know. (PK)

the mayor to see how he will quaff the sour syrup tomorrow. (MN)

WILL HE? WON’T HE?

NO SPONSOR, NO MEETING

The general body meeting of the GHMC slated for tomorrow will, for the first time, test the mettle of the young mayor Mohd Majid Hussain. This would be the first civic body meeting after his party, the MIM, parted ways with its big brother — the Congress. While he has to deal with a rival partner in power, the bitterer task for him will be administering the oath to the BJP councillor of Langer House, Uday Kumar. He has been running after the mayor for several months to get in the House, but the mayor has been dodging him. Once he and his floor leader had even barged into the meeting of the mayor, saying the rule book is silent on oath taking, which means it can be administered at any forum. It did not work. Now, all eyes will be on

It is a known fact that all political parties depend on sponsors and donors to organise public meetings. But sometimes, many don’t get sponsors. It happened to the TRS recently. The party which launched a month-long agitation for the creation of separate Telangana state wanted to hold a massive meeting in Kalwakaurthi assembly constituency of Mahbubnagar. It was decided to be held on January 30. The party leadership asked local leaders to make necessary arrangements for the meeting. But according to highly placed sources, it could not get rich sponsors and had to postpone the meeting. However, mid to small-size players may face challenges in managing competitive pressures. The strong revenue growth from exports is likely to offset the effect of increased price control in the domestic market,” it reports. “Strong exports prospects — led by the rise in generic spending — will drive the sector’s earnings and profitability. Of the export markets, Indian pharma will focus on the US market, which presents significant opportunities for the next two years for generics, due to patent cliffs and recent changes in healthcare policies. The strong portfolio of USFDA approved products is likely to help Indian pharma companies succeed in this market,” it envisions. According to India Ratings, “Improving healthcare infrastructure, better penetration of health insurance, increasing

cant revenue from exports.” It says, “Trend of alliances between Indian pharma companies and innovator companies would continue in 2013, given the win-win proposition for both parties. However, unlike the past deals wherein the alliances entered into were focused on the regulated markets, newer deals have been more focused on growing emerging markets. “Many of the alliances have also been for joint drug development, which acknowledges the research capabilities of the Indian talent pool. This goes beyond the traditional alliances, which combine the research capabilities and world class manufacturing facilities of Indian companies with the distribution capabilities of partners to cater to the world markets. “Revenue visibility and no significant capacity expansions will drive better use of existing capacities leading to a margin expansion. However, competitive pressures will continue to have a negative impact on margins and will offset part of the margin benefits. The formula is largely based on the size of a member's economy as measured by gross domestic product, and its integration with the global economy. Emerging-market and developing economies have demanded for years recognition of their increased importance in the global economy in the voting structure of the institution.

South Korean tourist raped in MP AURANGABAD: A South Korean woman, who was allegedly raped at a hotel in Madhya Pradesh on January 14, has filed a complaint with police in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. In her complaint filed here yesterday, the 23-year-old tourist alleged that she was raped by a waiter of a hotel in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, located in Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh, on January 14, Kranti Chowk police said. The woman mentioned that she landed in Bandhavgarh after visiting a few tourist places in MP. At a hotel there, she asked the waiter to serve her beer in her room. She alleged that the waiter laced her drink with some sedatives and she became unconscious after consuming it. The waiter then allegedly raped her, police said. She also mentioned that she had come to India and visited various tourist spots in the country. On January 29, her bag containing camera, cellphone and cash was also allegedly stolen from the railway station area in Aurangabad. Later, she narrated the alleged offence in MP to a tourist guide, who suggested that she file a complaint. Aurangabad ACP Naresh Meghrajani said the woman would be sent to the concerned police station in MP under police security today. PTI

mid a raging controversy over Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam, Tamil Nadu Government today said filmmakers should show "due respect" for sensitivities of people while making films like Dam 999 and warned it will "not spare anybody who tries to whip-up communal passions." In his address to the Tamil Nadu Assembly in its first session for the year, Governor K Rosaiah said timely interventions by the government to ban release of sensitive films like DAM 999 had avoided law and order problems.

Lyricist Javed Akhtar backed sociologist Ashish Nandi, saying his comments on corruption in the weaker sections of the society ahs been "misinterpreted" and "misrepresented". "He was saying that in the corrupt society when powerful or privileged people commit corruption, then it is acceptable. Whereas when the weaker section commits corruption, it looks very corrupt." "We've submitted letters to the government requesting it to oversee the talks between Raj Kamal Films International and leaders of all 24 Muslim organisations," said Chandra Haasan. Talks were to take place on Thursday between Muslim leaders and Tamil filmmaker Ameer Sultan on behalf of Raj Kamal Films but were called off after both sides decided that the government should mediate. Both parties agreed to sit and discuss the matter after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday said her government would release his film if Kamal Haasan could

reach an amicable solution with the protesting groups. The `95 crore espionage thriller was originally scheduled to release in Tamil and Telugu on Jan 25. A day before the screenings, the Tamil Nadu government imposed a twoweek ban on the film after some Muslim groups complained that some scenes in the film portrayed the community in a bad light. On January 30, a Madras High Court bench chaired by Justice Dharma Rao reimposed the ban on the film and revoked the earlier ban lifted on the film by Justice K. Venkataraman on January 29. HC notice to govt on Anganwadi death damages

NEW DELHI: Flight operations came to a tandstill at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here today due to dense fog which reduced visibility to below 50 metres and affected the schedule of over 50 flights. The fog descended upon the airport last night and it become so dense this morning that the runway visibility dropped to below 50 metres on both the runways rendering them inoperational, an airport official said. Two Jet Airways flights, one from Abu Dhabi and other from Dammam and a Lufthansa flight from Munich were diverted between 5.30am and 7.30am. According to sources, the pilots were trained to operate flights using CATIII B instrument landing system, which helps pilot to land a plane when runway visibility is up to 50 metres.

PANAJI: As Hillary Clinton made her final speech as America's top diplomat, she suggested US had encouraged India's "Look East" policy as an exercise in 'smart power' in its pivot to Asia Pacific. "There are limits to what soft power on its own can achieve," said Secretary of State Clinton at a meeting in Washington. By way of examples, she cited the nudge to New Delhi, an amity and cooperation treaty with ASEAN and use of trade negotiations over the TransPacific Partnership to find common ground with former adversary Vietnam. "We've encouraged India's 'Look East' policy as a way to weave another big democracy into the fabric of the Asia Pacific," she said making her only reference to a country she has described as "an indispensable strategic partner."

One Monalisa Naik and her friend Priyanka Das, both Anganwadi students, died after falling into a water-filled pit dug for construction. While the district administration had paid an ex-gratia of `20,000 each to the bereaved families, the fathers have now approached the HC seeking damage of `10 lakh each from the state government. Taking cognisance of the writs, a Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Pradeep K Mohanty and Justice S K Mishra yesterday issued notices to the state government asking the respondents to file counters.

‘Pak nukes could be hijacked by radicals’ Basic Instinct prank on PM goes viral BELGRADE: Serbia Prime Minister Ivica Dacic vowed an investigation after he was pranked by a Playboy model without underwear who posed as an interviewer and uncrossed her legs in a “Basic Instinct” skit. “This will not go unpunished and the whole case will be fully investigated,” Dacic’s security adviser Ivica Toncev told Serbian state television RTS yesterday. Neither Dacic nor his advisor were available to comment on the case, the first of its kind in Serbia. A video from the “Mission Impossible” local candid camera series shows Dacic, 47, giving an embarassed smile when the busty interviewer slowly uncrosses her legs after asking the premier a political question. The scene was a parody of Basic Instinct, the 1992 Hollywood erotic thriller in which murder suspect Sharon Stone, wearing no underwear, crosses and uncrosses her legs to unsettle her police interrogators. The episode’s 90-second trailer has so far been viewed 3.5 million times on Youtube and high traffic caused the show’s website to crash. AFP

LONDON: Increasing radicalisation within Pakistan’s military could lead to its nuclear weapons being hijacked by radical Islamists, a Pakistani scientist has warned. “Safety and security of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal is of a major concern. The growing radicalisation within the military, given attacks on its own internal bases, could lead to these nuclear weapons being hijacked by radical Islamists,” said Pervez Hoodbhoy, who was here for the London launch of his book ‘Confronting the Bomb’.

Growing radicalisation within the country’s military poses threat to the security of the nuclear warheads. The nuclear physicist and defence analyst estimated Pakistan’s arsenal to be similar to India’s, at around 120-130 warheads. “Earlier, such weapons were seen just as a means of

deterrence. The most dangerous development is the increasing search for fissile material as a new dimension of tactical nuclear war has entered the picture. This means the number of weapons will steadily increase,” he added. Hoodbhoy, who received his PhD in nuclear physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), stressed that the issue needs to be addressed for the sake of subcontinental as well as global security. BLAST KILLS 26 IN MEXICO A huge explosion rocked the Mexico City headquarters of state-owned oil giant Pemex on Thursday, killing at least 26 people, injuring 100 more and leaving rescuers scrambling to find survivors. Smoke billowed skyward as people fled the 54-floor skyscraper with some of those hurt in the blast being carried out on stretchers and office chairs, as witnesses recalled how a huge rumble shook the floor like an earthquake. Windows broke on several lower floors, scattering debris, with the company saying the cause of the deadly incident was under investigation and declaring that any reports on the origin of the blast amounted to speculation. The company has experienced deadly accidents at its oil and gas facilities in the past. Last year, a huge explosion killed 30 people at a gas plant near the northern city of Reynosa, close to the US border. The previous worst incident took place in December 2010, when an oil pipeline exploded after it was punctured by thieves in the central town of San Martin Texmelucan, leaving 29 dead and injuring more than 50. YEREVAN: An Armenian presidential candidate was shot and wounded late Thursday by an unknown assailant in the capital Yerevan less than a month before election day, police said. Paruyr Hayrikyan, head of the Union for National Self-Determination, was attacked in central Yerevan as he was heading home, police said.

SYDNEY: Australia on Friday lodged a protest with Tokyo after a ship from the Japanese whaling fleet entered its exclusive economic zone in the Southern Ocean near Macquarie Island. Canberra is strongly opposed to whaling and launched legal action challenging the basis of Japan’s so-called “scientific” hunt in December 2010.

SEOUL: North Korea has covered the entrance to a tunnel at its nuclear test site in an apparent effort to avoid satellite monitoring ahead of a widely expected detonation, a report said on Friday. The Punggyeri site, which has three tunnel entrances and multiple support buildings, is been closely monitored by US, South Korean and Japan.

A Somali-US man was found guilty Thursday of plotting to blow up a crowded US Christmas tree ceremony attended by thousands, despite his claims that he was trapped by an FBI sting operation. A jury returned its verdict on Mohamed Mohamud, 21, after deliberating for less than a day following the nearly three-week long trial over the attempted 2010 attack in the northwestern US state of Oregon.

ARCHBISHOP RELEASES ABUSE RECORDS, STRIPS CARDINAL LOS ANGELES: The archbishop of Los Angeles stripped his predecessor of all church duties Thursday as he released files on more than 100 clerics, as required under a 2007 lawsuit deal over alleged sex abuse. Archbishop Jose Gomez said retired Cardinal Roger Mahony will “no longer have any administrative or public duties,” while Mahony’s former top adviser on sexabuse issues, Thomas Curry, has stepped down as a regional bishop. “These files document abuses that happened decades ago. But that does not make them less serious,” he wrote, releasing the personnel files online after prolonged wrangling over whether the names should be blanked out. I find these files to be brutal and painful reading. The behavior described in these files is terribly sad and evil. There is no excuse, no explaining away what happened,” Gomez said. AFP

Technology AAKASH TABLET

SKY IS THE LIMIT

NEW DELHI: The third version of low cost tablet ‘Aakash’ will be a delight for its users as developers are likely to equip it with a SIM slot and more exciting apps, all within the existing price band. About 50 lakh ‘Aakash 3’ tablets are expected to be rolled out in the next phase, the global tender for which may be floated in February next year. According to committee members engaged in developing the third version of Aakash, the endeavour will be to make the product as indigenous as possible and involve multiple vendors. “Our ultimate aim is to imbibe the usage of tablets in the education system and create an ecosystem for this,” said Deepak B Phatak, committee member and professor in IIT- Bombay’s Department

of Computer Science and Engineering. According to Phatak, computer giants world over are amazed with the device and there is a keen interest among several vendors to participate in this venture. Aakash 3 will have a faster processor supporting both Linux and Android operating systems and come with advanced memory, he said. “It could also have a SIM card slot so that people can use it as a communication device,” Phatak said. Apart from Phatak, Prof Ashok Jhunjhunwala of IITMadras along with hundreds of students and other partners are also involved in making the new Aakash 3. One of the aims of students involved in the project is to develop an application for the tablet that can tell pulse rate among many others. It will also have a larger distribution and servicing system so that owners can get their tablets repaired locally.

NETFLIX EXPERIMENT

Microsoft will let non Xbox Live Gold members access Netflix app on their consoles if they already have a subscription for the service. Microsoft has been facing criticism for locking apps behind a pay wall, especially those that require a subscription. There are rumours of MS taking down this requirement in the future, with gamers required to pay up exclusively for online multiplayer gaming. These talks however remain a rumour as Xbox Live Gold subscriptions are a steady source of revenue for the company.

The release has been spotted by François Beaufort over on Google+ today, and appears to be a way for the technology giant to bring Android’s critically acclaimed Google Now cards to the desktop. After downloading the latest build, Beaufort says users simply need to toggle on the “Enable Rich Notifications” under chrome://flags. The code detailed in the screenshot also explains how users can create their own notification.

Issues People who have ordered Ubislate and made advance payments in month of Feb2012 have yet to receive the products while their online site promises a 48 hrs dispatch once payment is done. Google continues to list more failures when searched for this product than success. Indian complain forums continue to get filled up with complains of either no delivery or broken delivery.

On Wednesday, the first thirdparty search engine for Kim Dotcom’s Mega showed up on the scene, quickly climbing to the top of Hacker News. On Thursday, the site called Mega-Search.em has been rendered useless after Mega’s team stepped in to stop the indexing via a script. A quick WHOIS search showed the domain was made at 11pm UTC on January 20, the same day Mega launched. Yet its demise only came now because the site hit the media’s radar just yesterday, which presumably brought it to Mega’s attention. It’s not clear where the developers are from, but its Facebook page suggest they speak French.

lackBerry’s new smartphone platform launched this week faces an uphill battle winning back corporate and government users who helped spawn the “crackberry” culture, analysts say. “They still have work ahead of them and that is to get their existing customers as well as Android, Apple and Windows customers to give BlackBerry a second look," said Dan Shey, analyst at ABI Research. But in the past few years, some US government agencies, long seen as the bread and butter for BlackBerry, have been switching. And the sector faces challenges from the trend of people carrying two phones or bringing their own device to the enterprise. The Pentagon said last year it would no longer retain an exclusive deal for the devices and invited companies such as Apple to bid for contracts. And globally, BlackBerry’s smartphone market share has slid to less than five percent, according to research firm IDC. The launch included news that the company Research in Motion officially changed its name to BlackBerry as it launched the new platform aimed at helping the firm regain traction in a market now dominated by rivals. Gerry Purdy, analyst at Mobiletrax, said BlackBerry’s first task was to stop losing big corporate and government customers. “They’ve lost a lot of major accounts to the iPhone or Android, and they are probably going to find it very difficult to win back those accounts," he said. “So it’s important to hold on to the customers they have.”

W

ill Hyderabad split off from A n d h r a Pradesh? Will the state and city stay united? I have no idea how this will play out, and I haven’t followed the issue closely enough to have an opinion on the pros and cons of the two potential outcomes. What I do have an opinion on is that the instability surrounding this decision, and the inevitable instability that will follow a final verdict, is bad for business. Businesses thrive in stable environments. What do I mean by a stable environment? I mean stable tax rates. Stable power. Stable real estate, labour and contractual laws. Stable politics. Stable everything. Now notice I didn’t say low tax rates. Or reliable power. Or business-friendly laws. I said “stable.” And there’s a difference. Stable means predictable — things aren’t going to change quickly and without allowing for time to adapt. Things are basically going to stay the same. Businesses can thrive in almost any environment, even one that is seemingly unfriendly to businesses, provided the environment is stable.

As an example, many people believe that high corporate tax rates are destructive to businesses. They’re not. In the United States, some of the highest growth years in the country’s GDP occurred during high corporate tax periods. If tax rates are high, but stable, businesses figure out how to structure themselves so that they can operate efficiently in that high tax rate environment. It’s when tax rates are in flux — changing from year to year — that businesses cannot adapt, and thus leave, or die. Similarly, if a city has stable power, even if that means the power is out four hours a day but during the same four hours each day, businesses can still thrive. They’ll work around those four hours, or install inverters and generators to handle the down times. It’s when power is in a state of flux — on all the time one week, half on, half off the next, that they can’t plan adequately and thus suffer. And it’s easy to see why. Let’s say you operate a small ice cream store. If you know power is going to be out every day between 9 am and 11 am, it’s no big deal. You simply open your shop at 11 am, and crank your freezers to super cold temperatures from say, 6 am to 9 am, so your ice cream goes into a deep enough freeze that it’s still frozen when power comes back

on at 11am. You adapt, and your business can still thrive. But how do you operate when power is in flux, going out for an hour here, two hours there? Now you have to seriously consider buying and operating a costly generator, increasing your overhead. If, after you buy your generator, power becomes stable again, your operating costs are higher than, say, a new ice cream shop that opens up next door that hasn’t had to buy a generator. In the long run, you can’t compete with the new ice cream shop. Instability makes it impossible for businesses to plan adequately. And when they can’t plan, they can’t maximise the use of their capital. Do they buy a generator? A new building? A new plant? These decisions require planning and allocation of capital and consideration of taxes, but it’s nearly impossible to make such decisions if the

rules of the game are in flux. Which brings us back to the current proposed split of AP and Hyderabad. For all the politicians out there, on both sides of this issue, the lack of a final decision is causing havoc for Hyderabad businesses. For these business owners, their entire world is in flux, and thus they can’t, and won’t, allocate capital and expand. And the result is a slowing economy, fewer jobs, more poverty. For the benefit of Hyderabad, and AP, and the businesses in it and the all the people they employ, rapid closure on this issue is a must, followed by rapid stabilisation of laws and infrastructure after a verdict comes down. Without this stability, Hyderabad risks becoming a second tier city. Without this stability, a lot of business people and their employees — myself included — may end up in other places.

EDITORIALS Nims stent scam a wake-up call to regulators Shameful censorship

T

he Nims stent scam that has come to light after the arrest of a top cardiologist calls for some serious introspection by the medical fraternity and increased vigilance by regulators. When those who have sworn a solemn oath to practice their profession with conscience fall prey to the lure of money, it is the stature of the profession that suffers. However, the Nims scam is not the sole example. There are numerous hospitals, mostly in the private sector, where doctors are ‘encouraged’ by the management to convince the women to undergo caesarean even when the procedure is not necessary. There are also thousands of doctors who prescribe expensive medicines to patients in return for ‘gifts’ from pharmaceutical companies. Any villager would tell you how the doctor at Public Health Centre always comes late and leaves early, but will be punctual at his private practice. Regulatory bodies should ensure that lives and health of patients do not become tools of exploitation at the hands of unscrupulous elements who will stoop to any level to make money.

READERS’ VIEWS

I

t’s nothing personal, says Jayalalithaa, but the stay on Vishwaroopam was purely in the interests of the society. Now wait a moment. In the interests of the society? What about those who want to see the movie? It’s deplorable that an artiste of Kamal Haasan’s calibre had to make compromises in this land of all the places on earth: the land that welcomed all and shunned none, made space for all despite how they came and their claims. Someone ought to draw a line on this trend of being offended.

ROCK OF THE AGES

GEORGE COLLINS feedback@postnoon.com

H

ang on though, before we come to names, hum riffs and tune our air guitars, what is Classic Rock? At heart it's a symphony of guitar, bass, drums and vocals that can completely alter your perception of life, a piece that you have to rush out and tell the world about. Every note is a revelation, an epiphany welded to your subconscious. Remember the first time you heard it? Course you do! The Golden Age of Classic Rock was a short one, the mother load of "greatest music ever written" laid down between 1965 and 1980. Pre '65 the foundations were being laid, after '80 the temple dedicated to Gibson, Fender, Ludwig and Marshall began to crumble. Is it coincidence that 1965 marked the year Bob Dylan went electric at Newport, and 1980 saw the release of the biggest selling rock album of all time? When AC/DC's Back In Black —which has sold 50 million copies — was reviewed by Rolling Stone it was described as "the first LP since Led Zeppelin II that captivates all the blood, sweat and arrogance of the genre." Everything has a supreme example, a benchmark, in Classic Rock is Led Zeppelin, the band against which all others are measured. While the mighty Zep were undeniably a tight, cohesive unit of four highly gifted individuals, all of whom made major contributions the bands output, the force that propelled them to the status of the Greatest Rock Band Ever has to be the Greatest Living Guitarist (Ever!) Born on January 9, 1944, Jimmy Page started his music career straight after school in a band called "The Crusaders" covering Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent and other artistes. The physical hardship of life on the road led to illness which ended his time in the band and saw a return to art college. The need to play prevailed and Page entered a new phase as session guitarist. Exposure to many different musical styles and learning the discipline of the studio were indispensable lessons from this period. There is still a huge amount of controversy regarding Page's input into hits of that period, particularly regarding "The Kinks". Bored playing other peoples music, Page joined the Yardbirds in 1966. As the band were spiralling to destruction, the saving grace was the relationship he formed

Plans were crafted to form a supergroup comprised of Page and Jeff Beck on guitars, Keith Moon on drums, John Entwistle on bass and either Donovan, Steve Marriot or Steve Winwood on vocals. The band failed to materialise, but a taste can be heard on the 1968 instrumental Beck's Bolero, featuring Page on the 12 string rhythm guitar, Beck on lead, Moon on drums and John Paul Jones on bass. In 1968 the Yardbirds implode, leaving Page to recruit a singer, drummer and bass player or face prosecution for missing dates in Scandinavia. Enter John Paul Jones, Robert Plant and John Henry Bonham. The Scandinavia dates were fulfilled under the name "New Yardbirds", the name the band were forced to use in order to secure bookings in the UK. The preferred name, Led Zeppelin, coined by Keith Moon during the Beck's Bolero sessions, was first used officially on the October 26, 1968 at a gig in Bristol Boxing Club. They went on to sit with elders of a different race, where all will be revealed...

fter mosquitoes, MedScape lists ticks as the second largest vectors of human diseases. Lyme disease, and which is listed as a nationwide problem for dogs in the United States by The Daily Puppy, also affects human. It is caused by a bite from a tick infected with the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. Rocky Mountain spotted fever is spread to humans through wood ticks and dog ticks, and can even be life threatening. Babesiosis, caused by deer tick or blacklegged tick also affects both humans and dogs. The tick injects protozoa into the blood and affects the red blood cells. In animals, it leads to acute anaemia. “Ticks transmit bacteria, virus or protozoa, depending on what the tick has bitten before and what has entered its body,” said Dr Pramati Reddy, internal medicine consultant at Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills. “Lyme disease in more common in the United States. It is caused by a bacteria present in rats and deer. When you go hiking or to resorts or are exposed to forests, the risks are higher.” This too, affects both pets and humans. In the secondary and severe stages, it affects the nervous system and conduction in the heart. “It depends on the geography,” said Dr Aftab Ahmed, general physician and Apollo Hospitals. “Rickettsial disease

(which can be transmitted from animals to humans) can be caused by ticks. Symptoms include fever, body pain, joint pain and rashes.” Relapsing fever is also transmitted by ticks. This can also be louse-borne. Medline Plus lists coma, facial droop, liver dysfunction, seizures, pneumonia and meningitis as some of the complications. In dogs, Rocky Mountain spotted fever can be fatal, according to The Daily Puppy. And this disease can also be transmitted from animals to humans. It is declared as one of the most lethal diseases in a PubMed paper, causing fever, nausea, headache and pain in humans. “Ticks can transmit some toxins too,” Dr Ahmed said. So can such toxin carrying ticks be found in dogs in India, which can also affect humans? “The tick by itself doesn’t cause the disease. It may carry bacteria, toxins, viruses. We don’t know what kind (of disease causeing microorganisms) they carry. He said many of these can be fatal or cause serious illnesses, which affect the heart or even cause paralysis. Though many of these can be treated with antibiotics, there may be no special medication available for viral diseases transmitted by ticks. “Not every tick on dogs is infectious to humans,” Dr Pramati said. It is difficult to track it. Most people don’t know they are bitten by a tick. They think about other common things (like fever).” If left untreated, some tick bites can be fatal or cause irreversible damages.

MND tends to affect people over 40 and is most common between the ages of 50 and 70. There are about 5,000 people with MND at any one time in the UK. The condition affects twice as many men as women. One or two people in every 100,000 will be diagnosed each year. The exact cause of MND remains a mystery. It can run in families and for this reason one of the causes is presumed to be genetic.

Walking and running

SAVES ENERGY

Eating lunch late leads to obesity

According to a study, you save energy when you alternate between walking and running. WASHINGTON: The best way to conserve energy and reach your destination on time is to alternate between walking and running, says a study. Researchers found that when people have neither too much time nor too little time to reach their destination, they alternate walking and running, which turns out to be the best strategy for saving energy. The study is the first of its kind not conducted on treadmill, and it supports the notion that the human body has an innate sense of how to vary speed to optimize energy when we're on the move in our natural environment, the Journal of the Royal Society Interface reports. "We don't live our lives on a treadmill," said Manoj Srinivasan, study co-author and assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Ohio State University. "To better understand how we move in our everyday life, and how our spontaneous movements relate to energy expenditure, we have to study what people do away from the treadmill," according to an Ohio statement. "Once we have a good enough understanding of how we naturally move to conserve energy, we can build a solid theory and apply it in practical ways - designing better shoes, or better prosthetics that let people walk using less

energy," added Srinivasan. In tests, 36 college students were asked to travel a distance a little longer than a football field, either on pavement outdoors or inside a school hallway. They were given a stopwatch, and told to arrive at their destination at a specific time-not before and not after, but right on time. The students were free to set their own pace to achieve that goal, and were not told whether to walk or run. Sometimes the students were told to make the trip in two minutes, so they could walk the entire way at a leisurely two miles per hour (about one metre per second) if they chose. At the other extreme, they were allotted only 30 seconds, so that they had to run the entire way at a brisk pace of nine miles per hour (about four metres per second) to get there on time. The study revealed the existence of a "transition region" between 4.5-6.7 miles per hour (about 2-3 metres per second) when the students tended to make the trip through a mix of walking and running. "Students seemed to naturally break into a run or slow down to a walk to save energy while ensuring that they arrived at their destination on time," Srinivasan observed. IANS

RESEARCH

Beer helps brew new medicines? WASHINGTON: Researchers have unlocked the structure of humulones, acids that give beer its distinctive flavour, which could help design better drugs for diabetes, some cancers and other maladies. "Now that we have the right results, what happens to the bitter hops in the beerbrewing process makes a lot

more sense," said Werner Kaminsky, University of Washington research associate professor of chemistry, who led the study. Kaminsky used a process called X-ray crystallography to figure out the exact structure of those acids, humulone molecules and some of their derivatives, produced from

hops in the brewing process. That structure is important to researchers looking for ways to incorporate those substances, and their health effects, into new pharmaceuticals. Kaminsky cited thalidomide, which has a number of safe uses but was famously used to treat morning sickness in pregnant women in the late

1950s and early 1960s before it was discovered to cause birth defects, according to a Washington statement. Molecule "handedness" in one form of the drug was responsible for the birth defects, while the orientation of molecules in another form did not appear to have the negative effects. IANS

LONDON: Going in for a late lunch might actually make it harder for you to shed the pounds, according to researchers. Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston and the University of Murcia studied 420 overweight people who followed a 20-week weightloss treatment programme in Spain. Half of the group ate lunch -their biggest meal of the day -before 3pm, while half ate later. The former lost 30 per cent more weight than the latter, the International Journal of Obesity reports. The team divided the participants into two groups: early eaters and late eaters. Early eaters ate lunch any time before 3 pm and late eaters, after 3 pm. During the meal, 40 percent of the total daily calories were consumed, the Daily Mail reports. Researchers found that late eaters lost significantly less weight than early eaters, and displayed a much slower rate of weight loss. The researchers found that timing of other, smaller, meals did not play a role in the success of weight loss. IANS

A LANDMARK FILM

KAMAL HAASAN VS TN GOVERNMENT

— THE TUG-OF-WAR CONTINUES...

T

he tug-of-war between Kamal Haasan and the Tamil Nadu Government headed by Jayalalitha doesn’t seem to end anytime soon. A day after a judge lifted the ban on Vishwaroopam’s release in Tamil Nadu, the Madras High Court once again imposed the ban when the government appealed against the earlier order. Miscreants threw petrol bombs in a couple of theatres and the police imposed strict restrictions on the film’s release. Soon, in an emotionally charged press conference, Kamal Haasan stated that he has been victimised for no reason and said that he’ll lose all his life’s savings if the film isn’t allowed to release. “I don’t want to be dragged into politics as that is not my forte. I am an artist and I am fed up. After that, I will have to seek a secular State for my stay... secular State from Kashmir to Kerala, excluding Tamil Nadu... Tamil Nadu wants me out. When [MF] Hussain can do it, Haasan will do it,” Kamal Haasan said. His speech sent shockwaves across the entire Tamil film industry and several top actors including Rajinikanth, Suriya, Vijay, Karthi, Radhika, Sneha, Sivakumar rushed to Kamal Haasan’s home. By the end of the day, Kamal Haasan spoke to the media again and said, ‘I am still hurt, but calm,’ while making an appeal to his fans to not protest outside the theatres. “It’s just a movie, not worth a public agitation,” he said. Meanwhile, he decided not to approach the Supreme Court as of now and stated that he’ll wait for the Madras High Court’s decision on February 6. Incidentally, several actors from Bollywood including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and filmmakers like Karan Johar, Mahesh Bhatt among many others have come out in support of Kamal Haasan. Yesterday, Jayalalitha, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, addressed the media and said, “There have been several rumours and bizarre accusations on me over the ban of Vishwaroopam. We had got intelligence reports stating that there’ll be a lot of violence if the film releases in Tamil Nadu. We just don’t have the required number of policemen to safeguard the 500 odd number of theatres if we had allowed the film to release.” She further added that all the rumours about having a personal grudge against Kamal Haasan are rubbish and she also threatened that she would sue politicians and media houses that made such accusations on her. “This ban on the film wouldn’t have happened had Kamal Haasan came to us instead of going to the court. We are ready to felicitate a discussion between Kamal Haasan and Muslim leaders and if they reach an agreement, we have no problem in letting theatres screen the film,” she said. The film’s Hindi version Vishwaroop released today in 800 theatres across the country and it’s the biggest release in Kamal Haasan’s career. The issue has ruffled a lot of feathers and it remains to be seen whether it makes way for sweeping changes in censorship and the Cinematograph Act.

KAKURO How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column refer-

QUICK CROSSWORD enced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so

on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Morita pulls off double triumph

PATTAYA, THAILAND, Japan’s Ayumi Morita shrugged off a three-day battle with the rain to reach the Pattaya Open quarter-finals on Thursday, beating former world number one Ana Ivanovic and compatriot Kimiko Date-Krumm. Ivanovic and Morita began their first round clash late on Tuesday before torrential rain

brought proceedings to a halt with the contest poised at one set all. When they finally resumed on Thursday after a Wednesday washout, the Japanese player romped to a 63, 5-7, 6-3 win. “This normally doesn’t happen, where one match lasts for three days, but I was ready for that,” Morita said. AFP

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA: US number one John Isner says the knee trouble that kept him out of the Australian Open is behind him and he’s “ready to go” for this weekend’s Davis Cup tie against Brazil. The World Group firstround tie will open on Friday with American Sam Querrey taking on Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci. Then Isner will take on Thiago Alves. “My knee hasn’t been bothering me,” said Isner, ranked 16th in the world. “I feel like I’m ready to go.” On Saturday the US sends the formidable doubles duo of brothers Bob and Mike Bryan against Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares. Sunday’s reverse singles call for Isner to take on Bellucci and world number 20 Querrey to face Alves on the indoor hardcourt at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. The Bryan twins captured a record 13th men’s doubles Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

Mickelson’s 25-foot birdie attempt at his final hole of the day -- TPC Scottsdale’s par-four ninth -- curled around the rim of the cup but didn’t drop. “You don’t have chances to shoot 59 often,” he said. “To have that putt on line -- I’m kind of mortified that it didn’t

Button sure of new McLaren WOKING: An optimistic Jenson Button oozed confidence when McLaren became the second Formula One team to unveil their 2013 challenger with the public launch of the Mercedes-powered MP4-2. McLaren finished the 2012 season in third place in the constructors’ championship behind Red Bull and Ferrari, despite scoring as many victories as the world champion squad with seven. “It is exactly the same colour scheme

and I think it looks similar to last year, but it is completely different to last year under the skin,” he said. “And that’s good for all of us.” He said he was also confident of adding to the single pole position he has gained in his three years with the team since winning the drivers title with the Brawn outfit in 2009. “There have been some changes to the Pirelli tyres and they are going to suit me better,” he explained. ICC WOMEN’S WORLD CUP

Kamini steers hosts to victory India rode on Kamini Murugesan’s ton to thrash West Indies by 105 runs in their opening match. MUMBAI: India rode on opener Thirush Kamini Murugesan’s maiden ton to thrash West Indies by 105 runs in their opening Group A match of the ICC Women’s World Cup here on Thursday. Kamini scored 100 off 146 balls to become the first Indian eve to notch up a century in 50over World Cup as the hosts piled up a commendable 284 for six after being sent into bat. Defending the total, Nagarajan Niranjana (3/52), Jhulan Goswami (2/13) and leftarm spinner Gouher Sultana (2/38) starred with the ball to help India bundle out the Caribbean side for 179 runs with 5.3 overs to spare. West Indies run chase never

really got off as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Opener Kycia Knight, one of the twin sister in the team, was dismissed in the second ball of the innings after she was run out by a direct hit from Harmanpreet Kaur. Niranjana then castled Shemaine Campbelle to reduce West Indies to 38 for three. PTI

CRICKET BRIEFS

MUMBAI: Indian women’s team skipper Mithali Raj has said that she was surprised with the West Indies captain Merissa Aguilleira’s decision to field first winning the toss in the ICC Women World Cup’s opening match. “If I had won the toss, I would have batted first, because on this flat track, it would be easy to post a huge total rather than chasing 285 runs,” Raj said after her team’s resounding win yesterday. “You always have the pressure while chasing. They won the toss and decided to field, which is surprising to me,” she added. PTI

Ross back for England tour WELLINGTON: Sacked New Zealand captain Ross Taylor (right) returned to the Black Caps’ fold Friday when he was named in the one-day and Twenty20 squads to face the touring England side this month. Taylor, New Zealand’s best batsman, sat out the Black Caps recent trip to South Africa after being dropped as captain in favour of Brendon McCullum in early December. Coach Mike Hesson, a key figure in Taylor’s axing, said he was pleased to welcome the 28-year-old back to the national side. “Ross is a world-class batsman who is a key part of the Black Caps side,” he said. The limited overs squads contained only one new cap, Otago batsman Hamish Rutherford in the T20 line-up, with chief selector Kim Littlejohn saying he was looking for stability. “There are a couple of changes that have been forced through injury but essentially we want to be seen to provide continuity from one series to the next,” he said. Oz thrash WI by nine wickets PERTH, AUSTRALIA: Australia thrashed the West Indies by nine wickets in the first one-day international in Perth on Friday, reaching their winning total of 71 in just 9.2 overs. An onslaught of pace and swing skittled the tourists for just 70 off 23.5 overs before Australia raced to their target in emphatic fashion with Glenn Maxwell smashing 51 not out. Earlier, Mitchell Starc claimed 5-20 as West Indies imploded after winning the toss and elected to bat. The miserable total was the lowest ever in an ODI at the WACA, falling well short of Australia’s 91 against the West Indies in 1987. When West Indies slumped to 19-5 after Starc claimed his fourth wicket in eight balls, their lowest ever tally of 54, against South Africa in 2004, appeared in grave danger. Darren Bravo’s dismissal for 11 left the tourists 39-7 before captain Darren Sammy contributed 16 in a stand of 26 for the eighth wicket with debutant Jason Holder. Sammy was the topscorer with the bat, his tally only eclipsed by the 17 extras Australia conceded. Clint McKay started the rot when he claimed the prize scalp of Chris Gayle. AFP

India threaten pull-out over DRS

Pakistan optimistic about WC performance

JOHANNESBURG: After a hectic few days of interviews and public appearances to mark his 100th Test captaincy, Graeme Smith looked forward on Thursday to getting back to the core business of leading the South African cricket team in the first Test against Pakistan starting at the Wanderers Stadium on Friday. “It has been emotional and humbling,” Smith said of the outpouring of praise and public adulation that preceded him becoming the first man in history to captain a team 100 times in Tests. “When I wake up tomorrow, turning 32 and leading South Africa out is going to be one of the proudest moments in my career and my life.” AFP

NEW DELHI: India once again threatened to pull out of any tour in which the host country insists on using the DRS, according to a report. According to a report, at the ICC exceutive council meeting BCCI president N Srinivasan shot down a proposal in favour of a policy change where the approval of the host country would be enough to implement DRS. The report said that the ECB chairman Giles Clarke was the lone man who spoke in favour of a policy change. “Srinivasan’s concerns are understood to still centre on a belief that the technology could be easily manipulated and is unreliable. It has been learnt that he made the claim that India would pull out of bilateral series if a system was in place where the home side could insist on the DRS,” the report said. PTI

CUTTACK: Pakistan skipper Sana Mir sounded optimistic about her team’s performance in the ICC Women’s World Cup and said the off-field issues will not affect their campaign in the eight-team tournament. “We are optimistic about our good performance at Barabati Stadium. There is no pressure on players as Odisha Cricket Association has been very cooperative and helpful to us,” Mir told reporters at a media conference on the eve of her team’s match against Australia. Mir said her team members have no problem in staying at the OCA Club attached to the stadium. “We are here to play cricket and will do so,” she said. PTI

Liga under racism cloud in Clasico fallout Barcelona’s Brazilian Alves claims he was subjected to racial abuse at the Santiago Bernabeu. TIM HANLON Agence France-Presse MADRID: Leaders Barcelona return to league action away to Valencia on Sunday after a typically charged El Clasico in the cup where Dani Alves

claims he was subjected to racial abuse. With the league title seemingly out of sight, as Real Madrid trail Barca by 15 points, it means there is added incentive for Jose Mourinho’s men to beat their arch-rivals

in the semi-final of the Spanish Cup. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday, but later defender Alves said he faced racial abuse at the Santiago Bernabeu. “It is a shame, however

you are feeling people should be there to support their team and there are too many racist insults,” he said. “Sadly it is a lost battle because until they take more drastic action then it will continue,” he added.

a home game with Liverpool on Sunday, United can strike another psychological blow if they prevail at Craven Cottage. Despite his side’s struggle to beat Southampton, United captain Nemanja Vidic says the only thing that matters is putting points on the board. “Winning games is important at this stage of the season,” he told a television channel. “But we have to forget what has gone and focus on the next games. Nothing is finished yet. There is a long way to go, but we’re in a good position.” United and Fulham met last weekend, with Vidic and his colleagues winning 4-1 in a onesided FA Cup fourth-round encounter at Old Trafford.

Mainz ready to topple giants Bayern again

Rangers without fans, but with point to prove

NEWCASTLE, UK: Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta admits his team must embark a long winning streak if they are to restore the fear factor opponents used to experience when facing the Blues. Azpilicueta and his team-mates travel to face Newcastle on Saturday after a frustrating 2-2 draw at struggling Reading in midweek.

MILAN: Juventus’ three-point lead over Napoli at the top of Serie A could come under threat this weekend when the champions make a potentially challenging trip to Chievo missing striker Mirko Vucinic and coach Antonio Conte. Vucinic was one of several players cautioned for aggressive behaviour, and handed a one-match ban.

BERLIN: Coach Thomas Tuchel has admitted Mainz 05 will have to play to their limits to claim a third win from four home games against Bayern Munich on Saturday. With an 11-point lead at the top of the table, this year’s league title is Bayern’s to lose, but Mainz have a proud record at home to the Bavarians having won two of their last three homes.

GLASGOW: Rangers defender Ross Perry insists the fans boycott of their Scottish Cup fifth-round tie against Dundee United won’t distract the players from their task in hand. The fallen Glasgow giants will have a point to prove as they take on their former Scottish Premier League rivals for a place in the quarter-finals at Tannadice on Saturday.

PARIS: Make no mistake about it, David Beckham’s (above) move to Paris Saint-Germain may look like a publicity stunt by a club desperate to raise its international profile, but it’s also a timely boost to the French domestic game. In footballing terms, there is no real sense in PSG’s decision to sign the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder, who turns 38 in May and becomes the oldest outfield player in Ligue 1. He has only agreed to a fivemonth contract with the Ligue 1 leaders and admits that it will take several weeks before he is “up to speed” and ready to play. Then he will have to find a place in a PSG midfield that is not exactly short of options. Despite that, he hinted at the possibility of extending his collaboration with the club beyond the summer, possibly in some kind of ambassadorial role. “I don’t see it as a short-term project,” he said. “I have only signed until the end of the season, but I consider myself to be a part of the club’s future. I can help the club grow and help the French league grow. There have been no discussions about me having a long-term role at the club, but I think a long-term partnership is what we’ve looked for.”
