ere’s to a marvelous harvest season in the Napa Valley! Twentyone years ago I began publishing in Napa Valley. It goes without saying that I have had the honor and privilege to interview remarkable men, women and children over the years. In this issue, the story of Lagniappe Peak Wines tugs deeply on the emotional level. The passing of Bob Alemeida, a beloved community leader, was a man of wisdom and generosity. He was always there to help others.

When I learned, Bob made his own wine, he invited me to his vineyard atop Atlas Peak with one caveat – I was to leave my pen behind and simply enjoy myself. He and his wife, Debb, were gracious hosts. Bob took me on a tour around the steep rocky terrain where he pointed out the fruit ready for the harvest. His vineyard was hand planted and hand harvested because the hillside wouldn’t accommodate farming equipment. He joked about how the going up and down the terrain kept him in good shape. I asked if I could come back and do a story on him and he agreed. Two weeks later the Atlas Peak fire broke out and everything burned except the house. His kitchen garden of which he was so proud was gone. Shortly after the fire, Bob suddenly died of a massive heart attack. Now, a year later, Debb and Erika, their daughter, are keeping Bob’s dream alive with “Grace and Grit”. See story on 66. Also in this issue is the inspiring story of the dynamic relationship of Vintner Andre Crisp and winemaker Shawna Miller – the heart of Luna Vineyard. Their two strong personalities have proven that opposites can attract and flourish. Luna Vineyards is a beautiful winery on Silverado Trail. They have now opened a tasting room at the brand new Vista Collina in south Napa. See our cover story on page 52. On Saturday, August 25, 2018, the Napa Valley Grapegrowers (NVG) celebrated the 11th annual Harvest STOMP with a sold-out crowd of 575 guests, who raised a record-breaking $2.04 million net. Proceeds directly support NVG’s ongoing efforts to preserve and promote Napa Valley’s world-class vineyards, and the professional development and educational opportunities of Napa Valley farmworkers. This year’s event was hosted by Frog’s Leap Proprietors Tori and John Williams and their family at Galleron Vineyard, an organically farmed site in the heart of Rutherford. The Annual Festival for Mental Health Broke Records as $380 million has been raised to date. Garen, Shari, Shannon and Brandon Staglin welcomed a sold-out crowd of 500 to their vineyard estate and large wine cave. The family were seen walking around their cave during the wine tasting personally thanking the 75 vintners who donated their world-class wine to this special cause. Many prominent Napa Valley wineries showcased their best offerings. Chef Victor Scargle provided the bites and food samplings. Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson entertained.

Bidders stood shoulder to shoulder to a Take a Stand to break the $100 million barrier in money raised for cancer research during the 20th Annual V Foundation Wine Celebration. The three-day festivities raised a record breaking $18-million pushing the 20-year total over $100-million raised. Inspired by the late Jim Valvano, the V Foundation’s theme this year was “Time is Precious.” Celebrity hosts included Mike “Coach K” Krzvzewski, Scott Hamilton, Robin Roberts, Joe Theismann and Lou Holtz. They joined several famed Napa Valley vintners and restauranteurs who provided an epicurean and culinary delights to a sold-out crowd.

What’s in store for NVFF18? CELEBRITY TRIBUTES On Thursday, November 8 at the Lincoln Theater in Yountville, the festival will honor the NVFF18 Charles Krug Legendary Actor, Laurence Fishburne, Raymond Vineyards Trailblazer and Caldwell Vineyard Maverick. All the honorees will participate in intimate on-stage conversations with Access’s Natalie Morales, after the audience views short reels of the actors’ most notable work in film. Past honorees have included Will Ferrell, Matthew McConaughey, Kevin Costner, John Travolta, Nancy Meyers, Michael Shannon, Keegan Michael-Key, Michelle Monaghan, Miles Teller, and more. In addition to the Celebrity Tributes Program, The Groundlings Theatre & School will receive the festival’s first Miner Family Winery Legacy Ensemble Tribute on Friday, November 9. Special guests include Groundlings alumni Cheri Oteri, Laraine Newman, Julia Sweeney, Taran Killam and Stephanie Courtney. This on-stage discussion about how the actors’ experience as a Groundling shaped their careers on Saturday Night Live, and in film and other television shows, will certainly be one of the most hysterical and entertaining programs of the festival this year. Later on Friday, Geena Davis will also be honored with the Davis Estates Visionary Tribute following a screening of the new documentary This Changes Everything, an investigative look and analysis of gender disparity in Hollywood, featuring Geena as the film’s main subject. American Folk Art Holiday Festival After many requests from collectors, folk artists and antique dealers to return this year, the American Folk Art Holiday Festival, which was founded last year to celebrate the winter Holidays, will be held again.

I

t will take place Saturday, November 17, 2018 at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center, located at 1758 Industrial Way Suite 208 in Napa. Guests will be amazed to see the Folk Art and Folk Antiques from the creative sleight of hands of kind spirited artists and antique vendors. The Festival will be held from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. An admission of $10, payable at the door, entitles adult attendees (21 and over) to taste the release of Madonna Estate “HoliDaze” Festival Wine, a 2016 Estate Bottled Pinot Noir, with a collectible label featuring a graphic image by noted local artist Dave Huddleston and graphic design by Kurt Gonsalves, kmgdesign.net. The wine will be available for tasting with a chocolate sampling. It will also be available at the Center for purchase, and Dave will also be there to sign his label. What a great gift/or treat for yourself to ring in the Holiday celebrations! A portion of Festival proceeds will be donated to Lucky Penny Community Arts Center, a nonprofit theater company, community center and Festival host. The door admission is put to good use at this venue for the entire Napa Valley community, and also patrons who visit from other Northern California locations. Looking for a new way to enjoy wine? Wine Country welcomes Hanson of Sonoma as its first organic craft spirits distillery that uses wine grapes as its base.

H

anson Distillery originated from a passion driven by sons Chris and Brandon to produce unique artisan spirits. After pitching the idea to parents Scott and Judy and siblings Darren and Alanna, it didn’t take long for it to become a full-on family affair. Using a blend of three white wine grapes as its base, Hanson focuses on producing clean vodkas that are bright, purely organic, gluten-free and non-GMO. Hanson’s “secret sauce” centers around a still pot and pristine 50 plate glass batch filtration column which was custom-made in Germany. The 100% organically certified process begins with a base of grapes grown and harvested in partnership with the Ceja family in an adjoining space where their distillery and tasting room are located. Hanson produces various flavors of vodka from original to cucumber, mandarin, ginger, and habanero, to name a few. The fresh flavoring ingredients are hand selected

based on organic quality and infused with the wine base in maceration tanks for three to twelve weeks before entering the batch filtration process. Tasting experiences at Hanson offer a guided sampling of six vodkas and may include unique seasonal flavors such as espresso or boysenberry or guests may order handmade artisan cocktails that showcase the unique flavor profiles of each vodka. If all goes as planned, in December 2018, the Hanson’s will be adding a Whiskey Mash to the line-up. Walk-ins are welcome for tastings, but tours of the Distillery must be booked by appointment. nce upon a time, in the heart of Napa Valley, there once was a small unknown village slightly off the beaten path called Yountville, long before Michelin Star restaurants, luxury hotels, charming little shops, and boutique winery tasting rooms. The town actually began when a small 11,887-acre parcel owned by the Mexican government awarded a land grant to George C. Yount in 1836. Yount was the first Euro-American to settle in these parts and was a true pioneer in planting vineyards in the Napa Valley. In the early days, part of Yountville was actually named Sebastopol, though after George Yount's death in 1867, Sebastopol united with Yountville in honor of Yount's life and the two communities became one in Napa County. 36

The influence of the railroad coming in in 1886 brought new growth, and shortly thereafter newcomer Gottlieb Groezinger bought 20 acres and built one of the first wineries in the area with a barrel room & distillery in 1870, now known in the center of town as V Marketplace. Next, came the building of Yountville's veterans home bringing more added life to this sleepy hamlet. In 1965, the Town of Yountville became the 4th incorporated community in the Napa Valley. Napa Valley's first sparkling wine producer, Domaine Chandon opened their visitor center in 1977 along with the winery and the restaurant bringing notoriety to the region and proved to be instrumental in the continued wave of growth in Yountville. The expansion and popularity eventually put

this famed "Miracle Mile" on the map as one of the most sought-after destinations to visit in wine country. The metamorphosis over the last several decades has transformed George Yount's vision into an international tourist mecca. Along the main drag in Yountville, you will find many charming get-a-ways - inns, B&B's, Hotels and resorts to indulge and pamper you for your stay while on your visit to this magical little town. First Street Napa's New Mural A mural commissioned by Andy Beckstoffer on the wall of one of its Napa properties, the Beckstoffer Building, which houses Overland Sheepskin Co. and Brown Estate is complete. Painted by Bay Area-based artist Morgan Bricca and located at 1202 First Street, the mural is 11 feet tall, 70 feet long, and depicts the Beckstoffer Farm during fall. “I wanted to do something in the realm of public art that the community can be proud of,” said Beckstoffer, owner of Beckstoffer Vineyards. “Morgan is an incredibly talented artist who brought the fall scene to life in this project after multiple visits to the farm. This mural will live on for decades to come and I’m pleased that Napa residents and visitors can enjoy the beautification of this blank building wall.” Primarily viewable from the rooms and rooftop terrace of Archer Hotel, the mural features five farm structures and a woodblock-style imprint of the

Cornerstone Cellars MAKES A MOVE  BY FRAN MILLER

ornerstone Cellars might be one of the most established Napa Valley wineries to fly under the wine country radar. But the label’s new Downtown Napa and Vista Collina Village tasting rooms shine a well-deserved spotlight on the small winery with deep roots that sources its grapes from some of the areas most lauded vineyards. Cornerstone Cellars has been producing wine in the Valley for 30 years under the guidance of iconic names like Randy Dunn, Celia Welch, Philip Titus, and currently Kari Auringer and Charles Thomas, and is perhaps best known for its bold Cabernet Sauvignons sourced from acclaimed addresses such as Howell Mountain, Oakville Station, and Atlas Peak. Only 5,000 cases are produced annually and the wines are sold primarily through the tasting room and at high-profile local restaurant such as Morimoto, Rutherford Grill, Bistro Jeanty, and Angele. It was a six-alarm idea – more like genius, when Deborah Hanson came up with the notion of starting a bar-on-wheels, called Napa Valley Cocktail Company. The genius part is that they serve cocktails at special events from a vintage fire truck. His name is Charlie. 48

e’s a little 1929 Chevrolet American LaFrance Cosmopolitan fire truck that hails from Irvington, Indiana, where he served a very small community back in his day. “These trucks are rare,” said Hanson, a Napa resident with husband Ray since 1972. It’s a bit ironic, but more like one of several ‘signs’ that Charlie – a Cosmopolitan – was destined to be a cocktail bar on wheels in his near-retired life.


With three years of research, renovations, customizing and polishing, topped off with a beautiful LED-lit bar and umbrella, Hanson says Charlie provides first-class cocktails for any occasion. He’s also the perfect size that fit most events too. It all began when Deborah and Ray took a red-eye flight to Indianapolis to look at and ultimately purchase Charlie from Ralph Kramer and his son Chris, three years ago in Shelbyville, Indiana. Once in Indiana and after some thoughtful negotiating, turns out the Hanson’s had mutual friends in common with the Kramer’s and forged a special friendship after the sale. “Are we the foster parents now?” asked Michelle Kramer, Chris’s wife, who together, have since enjoyed a tour of the Napa wine country, compliments of Destiny Wine Tours. Now booking Charlie for events, Hanson says there’s no competition, because there’s nothing like Charlie in the market. “If you’re looking for something different that’s really classic, cool and extremely functional, we can do Bloody Mary’s, Moscow Mules, margaritas, beer or even serve your favorite wines, all on tap,” said Hanson, a hair stylist by day. “Basically, we customize kegged cocktails. Let’s say you’re doing signature wedding drinks and you want a pink cosmopolitan, we can put it on tap, or you want a Long Island iced tea, we can put that on tap for you too!” Her husband Ray, who created Destiny Wine Tours, a luxury limousine service offering curated wine tours for the last 10 years in Napa Valley, sells their own wine called Destiny, an estate cabernet, which thoughtfully sports a red fireman’s cap on top of the bottle. The fact that Charlie, their

Engine 29 bar on wheels is a fire truck, ties perfectly into their family’s firefighting background of the last few decades. “My father-in-law retired from the Oakland Fire Department, my husband Ray retired from firefighting in Alameda with 29 years of service, and my son Dustin is a fireman in Sacramento,” said Hanson. “Since I do hair and my husband runs the Destiny Wine Tours, this is our together business!” Hanson loves everything about Charlie, their Engine 29. “Charlie was a gift,” said Hanson. “Everything about it brings smiles.” When describing the truck to others, she said people typically nod and say ‘cool,’ but when they see it in person at an event, the wow-factor kicks in with overwhelming oohs and ahhs. “Once Charlie was primed for service, we were asked to participate in three major fire relief fundraisers,” said Hanson. “I feel so blessed to be able to participate in such events that help our community so much.

“We loved having Charlie as part of our benefit concert to support the Napa Valley Wildfire Foundation,” said Kathy Magner, hospitality director at Robert Mondavi Winery. “It was the perfect addition to this community benefit.” Running Napa Valley Cocktail Company with Charlie definitely has its perks. “I love everything about it,” said Hanson. “It’s like a backstage pass when we do parties. We were at Alpha Omega Winery, parked on the lawn surrounded by beautiful tables, food and people dancing. Everything about it – brought smiles!” Whether you’re renting Charlie, the fire engine mobile bar for two hours or six, Hanson says everything is customizable, from the spirits to the hours of service. It’s like a conversation piece on wheels, but with bubbly instead of a 3-inch, high-pressured hose spouting water 80 gallons per minute. “We will have your event stand out, because it’s so cool and unique,” said Hanson. “It’s self-contained and we provide premium cocktails of your choice. una Vineyards President Andre Crisp and winemaker Shawna Miller concede that they are opposites. The two joined forces at the 30-acre boutique winery in 2012, and despite, or rather due to, the yin and yang of their relationship, they have developed a deep appreciation for each other’s strengths, and in turn, have helped to elevate Luna wines. “We couldn’t be any less alike,” laughed Miller. “He’s really into activities, I’m not and vice versa. I like to camp and be outside with the grapes during harvest. He flies around the world in his nice suits. But it works; he is good at his job, and I’m good at mine.” The one thing they do have in common is their affection for Mike Moone, the former owner of Beringer Vineyards who founded Luna

Vineyards in 1995 and titled it playfully based on his childhood nickname. It was Moone who in 2010, started to mentor Crisp on what it takes to run a successful wine business. “I asked Mike if he would let me sit with him one hour each month,” said Crisp, who developed an appreciation for wine while growing up within his family’s grocery business. “Those breakfast meetings with Mike are what made me so successful. He gave me advice on which industry buyers to connect with, but I wouldn’t let him make introductions for me. I wanted to do that and forge ahead on my own. It was at this same time when I was launching a separate (new) brand, during the worse economic time and made things happen. Mike then adopted me into Luna and became a father figure.

That vision includes upholding core values of innovation, creativity, being immersive, and staying rooted. Luna Vineyard owns and manages approximately 70-acres in the Napa Valley, and sources fruit from 21 other Napa Valley vineyards to make 6500 -7000 cases per years. Their varietals are Italianinspired, yet they produce classic Bordeaux varietals as well. They recently received two 95-point scores for their Petite Verdot and Howell Mountain Merlot. Luna produces two labels: white and gold, which is called the Winemaker’s Reserve program created for high end restaurants and trade. The Black Label, estate wines are sold directly to consumers who visit their Napa Valley Estates, and to their wine club members. The Luna Vineyards portfolio also includes specialty labels such as Lunatic Red Wine, a CRISP Chardonnay and Asylum Zin. When pressed to pick her favorite, Miller demurs, but then concedes that it’s Canto, a Super Tuscan-style made with 50-percent Oakville Sangiovese, 30-percent Howell Mountain Merlot, and 20-percent Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a wine club specialty item and Luna is one of only a handful of North Bay wineries that produce it.

“One should never feel intimidated by the world of fine wine,” said Crisp. “At Luna, we produce wines that are accessible to everyone at all price points. Our goal is to connect with our customers and visitors. They are the reason we do what we do.” “We want our wines to be fun,” said Miller. “And the tasting room atmosphere is key to the experience. We don’t want people to feel uptight.” Guests at Luna’s Silverado Trail winery receive a warm welcome. The Luna team creates educational tastings that provide accessibility to the world of fine wine and visitors are encouraged to relax and to walk about the property. She can do the work of many with a big smile on her face. She manages the process with ease and always has since day one.” Crisp points out the external challenges of winemaking, such as natural disasters,

unexpected climate changes, and everyday unknowns, and he acknowledges that a lack of cohesiveness among winery team members can add unnecessary struggle. “I believe a house divided cannot stand,” said Crisp. “And at Luna, we are fortunate that Shawna, our team and I are aligned and connected.” “It helps that we have stayed consistent with a cohesive vision,” said Miller. “I developed an appreciation for Andre’s abilities because I’m not a business person, and he trusts my creative aptitude. The best part of my job is I have true artistic freedom; I like being able to be creative with the grapes and winemaking and do my little mad science things while Andre takes care of business, he adds is two cents at final blend.” “When Andre and Shawna are together, their spark is magical to witness,” said VP of Marketing, Nisha Singh. stablished in 2004, Trahan Winery is a compilation of stories, incorporating cultural influence, lineage and artistry into a wine label built out of hard work and tremendous devotion. Located in the heart of Downtown Napa, Trahan Winery is a family owned, boutique winery dedicated to producing premium wines in the Napa Valley. Inspired, owner and winemaker, Chuck Custodio left the corporate world to embark on a journey full of passion, aligning his agricultural heritage with his desire to learn the fine art of winemaking. Living by the mantra, “learn by doing,” Custodio dedicated himself to the profession and commuted from San Francisco to Napa, driving four hours per day, making ten dollars an hour for 4 years to educate himself on the business, craft and industry. “I was introduced to wine on a weekend trip to Napa. While most locales enjoy four changes of season, the Napa Valley boasts five: winter, spring, summer, fall, and harvest. A season unto itself that evokes the same sense of anticipation, promise, and excitement as summer vacation or winter holidays, harvest time in Napa is magical.

T

he season is signaled by the sight of school buses, plums and figs ripening in the garden, and creative ‘crush’ t-shirts sported throughout the valley by various wine-making squads who work day and night to deliver to the world that for which Napa is best known. Sidle-up between locals during this time, and the conversation invariably involves grapes. “Are your grapes in yet?” “What are your brix (sugar) levels? “When will you pick?” The focus is all-consuming and serves to remind that this verdant valley – while a posh and chic tourist destination - is essentially agricultural farm land, the end product of which just happens to dazzle. Like other annual seasonal events, harvest is a time of tradition. From ‘blessing of the grapes’ ceremonies, to lunchtime culinary showdowns,

each of Napa’s 400 wineries, large to small, celebrates harvest in their own unique way. Special dinners, balls, and grape stomps to which the public are invited are de rigueur throughout the valley, as are more proprietary traditions. At Cain, wine grower and general manager Christopher Howell gathers his team annually during harvest for a ‘class photo’ atop La Piedra, the dramatic rock outcropping in the heart of their Spring Mountain vineyard. At Rutherford’s Alpha Omega, shenanigans amongst the cellar team are a prelude to the hard work to come. After winemaker Jean Hoefliger blesses the winery’s estate Sauvignon Blanc 1155 grapes with a shower of Schramsberg Blanc de Blanc, the production team douses him and each other with bubbles. At Viader on Howell Mountain, the season brims

with fond memories. “We begin each day hiking our steep hillside vineyards checking and tasting the grapes throughout the vineyard blocks,” said Alan Viader, director of operations and winemaking, and son of winery founder Delia Viader. “Weekends are when we get reinforcements, when my children can also help in the sampling of the grapes. Harvest season and hiking with my mom and my kids brings back great memories of when we used to follow my mom around as kids sampling grapes.”

While intoxicating – literally and figuratively - harvest season can also be exhausting for those behind the scenes. The ‘all hands on deck’ period following the long growing season can last for months, with frenetic activity in the vineyard, on the crush pad, and in the cellar starting as early as late July. “Harvest is a very selfish time of year – when I say ‘goodbye’ to friends and family and disappear into the work,” said Jennifer Rue, winemaker at Oakville Ranch, Hoopes, and Red Mare.

“There is a lowering of social expectations, and time takes on a whole new dimension. But the pre-dawn drives to the vineyards with my dog are deliciously indulgent and the views breathtaking.” Factors that determine grape harvest dates include varietal, vineyard location, soil type, microclimate influence, and personal winemaking style. Sparkling wine grapes are typically first to be picked, Cabernet Sauvignon last. “The time between my first pick of Sauvignon Blanc and the start of Chardonnay and then biding time for the reds evolves into what I call shark energy,” said Rue. “It feels like a shark swimming circles, machine-like and calculating. It can be a tricky time and if weather concerns are present, can result in some premature picks if one isn’t careful. Pacing oneself during harvest is a challenge; it is a time not to put off until tomorrow what you can do today because who knows what tomorrow brings.” Rue is cautiously optimistic about this year’s harvest. “We are definitely getting a later start than the past few years,” she said. “But, if the weather holds, I’m hoping the window of maturity will be wide enough that we can bring things in at a reasonable

pace. Once I get my first reds picked I’ll know more about the personality of the vintage. A lot about the characteristics of the vintage are revealed by how the fruit behaves during fermentation and the character of color and tannin extraction. Right now, I'm still at the starting gate and full of anticipation.” “At this time of year, you drive up and down the road and see whose bins are set up,” said Kirk Venge, winemaker and consultant to several Napa Valley labels including B Cellars which sources its grapes from Andy Beckstoffer’s heritage vineyards. Venge, who grew up in the valley and learned about wine at the heels of his father Nils Venge, said that everybody has a different picking strategy. For Venge, that strategy includes daily weather surveys and daily vineyard walks to see how the leaves are holding up. Most importantly, he tastes the grapes. “People talk about the chemistry, and whether it’s the most important aspect in picking,” said Beckstoffer, who owns the largest number of vineyard acres in the valley, and whose ‘Beckstoffer’ designated signs can be found throughout Napa and Lake Counties. “They measure sugar, acid and PH and that sure is the backbone of it, but the decision to pick is based on the flavors in the winemaker’s mouth. That also applies to blending and developing the wine. That’s the skill and art of a winemaker. Everyone knows what to do in the Napa Valley, but the timing of it is where the masters prevail.” Venge, who has developed a well-deserved reputation as one of the best winemakers in the valley, started working with Beckstoffer in 2003, and sources many of his grapes from Beckstoffer’s famed Rutherford To Kalon Vineyard which was planted in 1868. “This is the most important vineyard in North America because it produces some of the finest wines for those winemakers who get their hands on its grapes,” said Venge. “I have had the opportunity to work in every single block on this property and know it intimately. Andy’s crew really dials-in the vineyard exactly as we want it…same thing different year. It’s a vineyard full of brooding fruit that is always consistent. The grapes produce a deep chocolaty, dried currant flavor which makes a beautiful, rich, plush cabernet sauvignon.” “We get paid on the quality of wine and the price the winemakers and vintners can get so we will do everything we can to make sure they have the highest quality of grapes,” said Beckstoffer.

“We farm differently than others in the area. We implement new technologies and we are changing the row direction, the wine spacing, the trellis system, and we are upgrading the root stock.” In the Carneros AVA in South Napa, winemakers anticipate an extended growing season. “The fruit looks good and acids are just coming in and everything is getting ripe,” said Cuvaison Wine Estates President Dan Zepponi. “The biggest hurdle we’re having is everything is aligning. The blocks are ripening slowly and the fruit integrity is really good, but the vines will all be ready to harvest at the same time.” Like Venge, Zepponi grew up in the wine business and has experienced his share of

harvests. His late father, Gino Zepponi, an aerospace engineer, started ZD Wines in 1969 with good friend, Norman deLueze. Cuvaison plants 200 estate acres of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir plus some small specialty lots of Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Syrah, and Malbec on their Mt. Veeder property. The winery produces 45,000 cases per year in addition to 30,000 cases of high end custom crush. Last year, a heat spike in September fried Cuvaison’s vines and killed the canopy. This year the canopy is in great shape, and the growth cycle uncompromised. “We were joking in-house the other day about harvest normality,” said Zepponi. “What is normal anymore? Things have

been warming up sooner in the last decade, but this year we are actually a little beyond by about a week. But on the Sonoma side where cooling fog looms until mid-morning, we are picking out earlier. The wind and cool air is keeping everything in good shape. The yields are above normal. This is shaping up to be a stellar year.” Zepponi’s palpable excitement and anticipation is shared throughout the valley during this singular time of year. Harvest is when Napa is at its most vibrant; the season defines this small corner of the wine growing world and its end product. Harvest is a dance between winemaker and Mother Nature. It’s a race against time - the prize ultimately shared by wine lovers the world over. “Being a part of something that takes over the entire region and captures the imagination far beyond is humbling and the fellowship and camaraderie humanizing,” said Rue. “I will only get to experience a finite number of harvests in my life and I relish the lessons each one brings. Harvest is exhilarating.”

CHAPPELLET WINES 50 Years on the Hill

Donn Chappellet was a smart man. A businessman, an educated man, a visionary man. In the end though, he was a family man.

G

uided by arguably the grandest of the grand old men of the valley, Beaulieu Vineyards’ Winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff, Donn was told that it was the hillside fruit in Napa that would lead to champion wines. Armed with those words, money in the bank after selling off shares in the first coffee vending machine to use fresh grounds, and a dream of producing Bordeaux style wines, Donn found the property on Pritchard Hill and moved his family there. While wine was a passion for Donn, it was not the passion. Always an introspective person, Donn thought long and hard about the decision to move from the ease of life in Beverly Hills to the harsher country life that would be the start of only the 32nd post-prohibition winery in Napa. He was outright told by Tchelistcheff that although the going would be tough, and the issues greater than the easier grape growing on the valley floor, the benefits that would land in the bottle would be well worth it. Everything though was predicated on the value of life that he could provide for his six children. Without their buy-in and the support from his lifelong love Molly, his vision may not have come to fruition. In the end, Donn believed that the volcanic soil of Pritchard Hill and its warm, dry temperatures contributed to the strength and character of a great wine. It turns out that was also a great recipe for raising

a family. Three of the six kids are still directly involved in the winery, with Cyril essentially running the show, (though he argues that he doesn’t have a title on purpose – he does whatever it takes to ensure the winery runs as it should). As with any start-up, and especially with one that is in a business whose success is very much at the whim of Mother Nature, Donn needed a rock. Someone who was a constant touchstone for him and the family as they grew as a winery and a family. That rock was Molly. If Donn understood from a practical standpoint that he could coax star quality fruit from the harsh Hillsides of Pritchard Hill, then it was Molly who saw the beauty of the place. With the eye of the artist that she is, Molly saw in the rocky soils and stunning views a way to nourish herself and her family by creating first a vegetable garden for the dinner table, and then eventually morphing that garden into what she calls her “Tapestry.” It’s a Mediterranean garden that doesn’t require much water or a lot of care, and is planted with perennials so she doesn’t have to re-plant every year. As a tapestry garden, Molly said, “It’s about form and structure. It’s designed for the eye.”

It’s ironic, then, when hearing of an artist-driven spot in nature that is visually striking, that it was a recent group of blind children that truly opened Molly’s eyes to the magic of it. “Since Donn’s passing there has been a silence here and I’ve been able to hear the garden for the first time. Not just the visual aspect of it, but the sound of the leaves, the sound of the wind through a pine tree or a maple – it’s all different. The person who is not blinded with their eyes are more aware of their other senses - taste, smell and feel.” And while she may not directly say it, it’s obvious that the Chappellet’s connection to the land is very much rooted in Molly's vision of what it is, and Donn’s vision of what it could produce. And produce it does. The wines are of such a high caliber that upon opening a 1969 vintage to celebrate 50 years on the Hill, the wine was still full of bright fruit and sturdy structure. And they are still going very strong on the shoulders of a current stable of great wines. Chappellet is a visionary winery, ready to change its business model and continue to move forward. Thoughts of how the next generation of stewards of the winery

and its lands also continually pop up in conversation, further proof of its looking forward. For a place steeped in a 50-year history, Donn’s legacy of taking a long view of running the business is still very evident here. As for what Molly and the remaining family members that still call the winery home want to do with what they have on that storied spot overlooking Lake Hennessey, Molly said it best: “Donn passed away two years ago. In those last two years I have had time to think. I want to make the world a better place. To do something to help improve people’s lives. To give the gift of helping people see things in a different way. “There is so much more I want to do on Pritchard Hill,” Molly said. “There is something very special about this place. “Grace and Grit” is what it takes for a mother-daughter duo to rise though the ashes following a double tragedy last year. Last year the Atlas Peak fire changed their lives. Debbie Almeida, wife and partner to Bob Almeida, and their daughter, Erika AlmeidaMooney are continuing the “Love in the Bottle” philosophy at Lagniappe Peak Winery.

ob named his wine label Lagniappe Peak Wine. Lagniappe, pronounced Land Yap, is a Creo term for “a little something extra.” “Mom was definitely dad’s Lagniappe,” smiled Erika. “Our wines are a love letter to every person, place and thing that has had a such an impact on our lives. They came so far from a walk-in closet type apartment to this property on

the top of the Napa Valley. Dad always was a giving and generous man.” Debbie and her husband, Bob Almeida, a community leader and well-respected retired businessman turned vintner, were coming home from a concert when they saw the eastern hills of Napa ablaze. Their immediate thought was for their dog. A last-ditch effort before the roads were

closed was to make the five-mile steep climb up to their Napa home and vineyard atop Atlas Peak. The couple had minutes to retrieve their dog and computer hard drive before they were told by fire officials to get out. On the way back down the hill they and sixty other cars were blocked from their final descent due to a down tree across the road.


“Bob took charge and got two young fire fighters to radio for help,” said Debb. “Help did come, the road was cleared yet all we could see was the fire across the Silverado.” For ten days, the residents on Atlas Peak Road didn’t know the fate of their property. Along with many other families, Bob and Debb stayed at the Napa River Inn. When the road closure was lifted, Bob made the drive to his “dream home” while Debb stayed behind. There was still limited access while fire crews cleared debris and removed down power lines. The devastation and destruction Bob witnessed was hard to take. The sadness intensified when he saw his neighbor’s homes reduced to rubble. As he turned off Atlas Peak and made the long drive up his road, the ashes of his vineyard, his out buildings and his beloved gardens, were scorched beyond recognition. Luckily his home was untouched. “The fire came right up to our kitchen window and completely burned through Bob’s outdoor garden,” said Debb. “God drew a circle around our house and said there is too much love in this home, move on fire.” Bob daily monitored the clean-up. His 2017 vintage of Cabernet was destroyed. Fortunately, the rest of the vineyard had been harvested before the fire. Weeks following the fire, as was customary, Bob called to Debb before heading back down the hill. “I’m leaving the house, and I’m closing the gate.” He said. “I love you, and I’ll see you in ten minutes,” Debb recalled. This was her last conversation with Bob. Minutes later he collapsed from a massive heart attacked that was witnessed by Corp of Engineers working close by. Their attempt to revive Bob failed. He had just turned 67. “When mom called, saying dad was well over an hour past due, I told her dad probably just stopped to talk to someone,” said Erika. “Then the phone call came and we were just shocked.” Bob and Debb’s life was a true love story from rags to riches. They met in New Orleans when Bob, then 19-years old, received a full ride Merit Scholarship at Loyola University. Debb was just 18. They quickly married. Erika was born shortly after. “We all kind of grew up together,” said Erika. “I had two amazing strong role models that showed me how important family was. Mom was my best friend. Dad went into finance and he continued to climb the corporate ladder moving us from Connecticut to Manhattan to Australia and back to Manhattan. It was during his

time in Australia that dad fell in love with wine.” “We were married for 47 years,” said Debb. “I watched him as a teenager grow into a successful man. We always celebrated love, adventure and fun even if we were making a fruit salad.” “What do you get a 50-year old that has everything?” said Debb, as she and Erika reminisced over the lives and what started it all. They purchased a barrel of wine at the Crush Pad in San Francisco and it came with a winemaker. Typically, these barrels of wine are used in corporate team building, but Bob surprised his appointed winemaker, Kian Tavakloi by doing his homework. “Kian and Dad hit it off, and he’s been Dad’s winemaker ever since,” said Erika. Since his first vintage in 2012, Bob has always set aside a barrel to raise money for the Loyola University Merit Scholarship fund so he could bestow financial assistance to other students like someone who helped him. A year before the crisis Bob had a come to Jesus meeting with his daughter and said he was growing the brand and the time is now if she wanted to be a part of the business. Erika, who is a professionally trained chef, said yes and officially came on board with Lagniappe Peak Wines the month before the fires broke out. “We will continue as a family with our Love in a Bottle and we will be passionate about it,” said Erika. “Dad gave us a wonderful platform to create a boutique winery. Keeping his love and dream alive is the ultimate privilege. He taught everyone he met about gratitude and giving back.” “Faith in the future is the one thing I’ve learned from all of this,” said Debb. “I believe that time heals all. I also believe that in time, I will have the answers to the questions that I have.” Debb and Erika want the world to know they are open for business by appointment only. Their southern hospitality, Erika’s in-season cuisine bites and story-telling will give anyone a unique wine country tasting experience. Come hear the stories behind their wines and how they grew from 75 cases in 2012 to 3000 cases today. “Life is complicated now, yet we balance each other out,” said Erika. “Tragedy doesn’t define us. How we deal with tragedy does.”

Based on comradery and an appreciation for extraordinary wine, The Wine Thief, located at the corner of First and McKinstry in Downtown Napa is a tasting collective celebrating small family owned brands.

A

collaboration between vintners, the one of a kind tasting destination offers guests an authentic experience showcasing the region's character through virtuosity. “What sets us apart is the ability to take someone on a wine journey, having 10, 11 or 12 producers and a really broad spectrum of wines and different varietals. We are able to cater to all of the individual pallets,” said Proprietor, Andy Renda. “Ultimately, we sell rarity and exclusivity. I don’t think people need to fly to Napa to find something they can find at home. It's more of a, ‘show me what I can’t find,’ philosophy. That’s a big part of our charter and delivering what we believe are pretty special world-class wines without the pretense. We are trying to build an elevated experience that is a lot of fun.” A concept driven by vintners for vinters, proprietors Garrett Ahnfeldt and Andy Renda have created a haven for oenophiles. A partnership inspired by artisanship and passion, the visionaries behind the boutique collective officially opened their doors on July 11th, 2015. 68

With a foundation rooted in viticulture, Garrett Ahnfeldt’s heritage proved to inspire. Cultivating a passion for farming in his youth, Garrett drove tractors by the time he was seven years old. Growing up in the “Valley” as locals call it, gave Garrett a deep appreciation for the wine industry and the community. “When I was younger, I lived out in the country. My childhood was full of sports, running through vineyards, and playing with neighbors. The sense of community was paramount,” said Ahnfeldt. “My Dad taught me how to ride tractors at a young age and I helped my parents in the vineyards. Looking back, I cherish thosememories.” Moving to the Napa Valley in 1985, the Ahnfeldt family built a legacy selling world class grapes and launching Ahnfeldt Wines in 2002, which was released in 2004. By the time he was 24 years old, Garrett knew exactly where he wanted to be after leaving Sacramento State to help with his family's business. Tapping into his agricultural roots, Garrett farmed for his family and friends prior to starting Ahnfeldt Vineyard Management Company. Growing for Ahnfeldt Wines among other notable brands, Garrett’s passion lead to his next adventure in the wine industry. In 2005, G Wine Cellars was born. Garrett's years spent in the vineyards gave him a unique voice full of elegance and vitality. “What is truly special about G Wine Cellars is that it has taken me to so many places. Wine brings so many beautiful people together and relationships that will last a lifetime,” said Ahnfeldt. “I hold that very dear to my heart.”

A Vintner and “Honest Cook,” Andrew J. Renda (Andy) began his career in the food industry at the young age of 14. By the time he 17, Andy was honing his culinary craft, cooking for “The Country Club,” in Brookline, MA. Over the next sixyears, Andy developed a palate for great food and wine pairings while working in restaurants and retail shops. “By the time I was 23 years old, I knew that a career in wine was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” said Renda. “It was that defined for me. I could not read enough, I could not taste enough, I picked the brains of people who had done it for years and years.” Managing two retail shops in the Boston Area, Andy’s global exposure fostered his ambition. Setting his sights on the wine business in the Napa Valley, Andy asked his future wife and Mother of his two children, Maxwell and Adelaide, Kelly, to relocate selling all of their belongings and leaving their jobs behind. “I owe Kelly more than anything,” said Renda. “She believed in me.” Over the next decade, Andy thrived as the Director of Sales for Vintner’s Collective in downtown Napa. His years of experience, refined palate and knowledge of the wine enabled him to providea world-class experience. During his tenure, Andy’s passion for selling prodigious wines merged with his desire to make them. Collaborating with Jarred Pearce, AJ Pearce was launched in 2007 focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Then in 2012, Andy introduced Solamente, a Pinot Noir project further cementing his legacy in the Napa Valley. “I am crazy passionate about wines. I feel it is important to make wines that you believe in at the highest level,” said Renda.

THE WINE THIEF The Wine Thief was contrived by the professional careers of both Garrett Ahnfeldt and Andy Renda. Their mutual respect for one another and innate brotherhood enabled them to create a platform where off the beaten path, world-class, artisanal wines could be savored. The stunning 2650 squarefoot tasting collective was built by Partner and Master Woodworker, Todd Richter. The custom built venue boasts floor to ceiling windows, contemporary design, a small commercial kitchen and a versatile tasting space suited for every occasion. Whether guests prefer a

estled in the hills on the fringe of Coombsville, Porter Family Vineyards represents of one of Napa Valley’s most idyllic family vineyard enclaves. The twenty-acre property was purchased by IBM IT veteran Tom Porter and his wife Beverly in 2005 from its original owner, Richard Perry, who with the help of Estate vineyard manager, Carlos Martinez, built the original vineyard terraces by hand. The location of the property provides the perfect climate and aggregated soil profiles for growing grapes, and now fourteen of the twenty acres are planted to vine, mostly Bordeaux varietals. Once visitors are buzzed in through the crested iron gate, they are led up a winding hill where they begin their tasting experience with a friendly welcome and a cool splash of Porter’s limited production Chardonnay or Estate grown Sandpiper Rose’. The elevation views are breathtaking. Rolling views of the vineyards and the entire Napa Valley span as far north as Calistoga 78

and Mount St. Helena. The backside of the property abuts the high hills of Skyline Park, ensconcing the property with a sense of tranquil privacy. While it’s difficult to divert from such a majestic overlook, guests are invited to begin a walking tour through the undulating vineyards to learn more about their history and future plans for newly planted Grenache and Malbec. At the end of the viticulture stroll, the tasting experience moves inside to Tom Porter’s state of the art caves where another wine is poured, and covers are lifted to reveal some of the wineries inner workings. Built in 2006, the 17,000 square foot caves comprise four separate tunnels that burrow 50 feet underground. Leveraging his threedecade-long career in IT and electrical engineering, Tom designed the winery operations to be automated and self-contained using a combination of computers and software tools for accessibility and efficiency. Live monitoring of climatic conditions in the tunnels

and vital statistics during growing, fermentation, and barrel aging processes are managed using technology Tom designed and software tools that provide instant access to make adjustments from anywhere using an Ipad or smartphone. The underground tour continues with a tasting in the center dome of the cave which is warmly lit and decorated with panoramic photos of the sprawling vineyards and volcanic rock formations from the property. One of the largest rocks is preserved to display the fossilized footprints of sandpiper birds that inhabited the location millions of years ago when the area was nearer to shore and at 50 foot lower elevations. The discovery of the footprints inspired the Porter Family logo and are embossed on most of their Estate labels. The room is elegantly appointed with a formal table pre-set for a seated tasting with four or five current and library vintages and small bites to pair. Wine selections for the tastings usually include their signature red Bordeaux blends, a Cabernet Sauvignon, and for those lucky enough to visit when they may be available, their limited production Barre Azure or exclusive non-vintage “Time” 100%

inegal Estate is one of Napa Valley’s newer wineries, yet it’s steeped with rich tradition. Clarke and Elizabeth Swanson (of Swanson Frozen Food fame) founded the winery in 1985 with a pointed vision to produce Napa Valley Merlot. They hired Industry veteran Andre’ Tchelistcheff as their wine consultant and set off to plant Merlot vines on the 100-acre property. After years of distinguished acclaim as one of Napa Valley’s most premier Merlot brands, the Swanson’s expanded their roots and started planting and producing “off the grid” varietals such as Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio, and Syrah. While to this day Merlot remains their most prominent label, the Alexis Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio are also critically acclaimed, and over the years, Swanson has honed their National sales presence around these three varietals. Luckily for those who have the opportunity to visit the winery, Swanson still produces and sells direct, very small lots (<300 cases for most) of their boutique varietals or “Secret Stash” Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Petit Syrah, Zinfandel and a few eloquent late harvest and dessert wines. Tastings at Swanson are booked by reservation in their Estate Salon in Rutherford. The Salon Tasting experience was created back in 2001 and emerged as one of the first direct to consumer tasting experiences in Napa. Limited to small groups, the reserved tasting feels like a small dinner party and offers guests an intimate opportunity to sample small production wines available only at the winery. The décor of the Salon is Bell Epoch with a strong Louisiana influence, inspired by 18th-century Parisian culinary salons, and brought to life by Clarke’s wife, Elizabeth, a fifth-generation New Orleanian. The dark

rose painted walls, 20’ ceilings donning hanging feathered bird nests provide a playful backdrop for interesting conversation. Salon Tastings are limited to small parties ranging between two and eight people and are hosted at a large, round gilded wood table under a spectacular candle chandelier. Five wines from the limited “Secret Stash” portfolio are paired with small bites that are created to impart interesting nuances to the wines. The menu varies, and is nothing short of creative, with unconventional taste combinations that might include carrot pannacotta, black pepper gelee’ or smoked ricotta cheese. The menu’s encore usually includes something sweet, like chocolate or French macarons. Based on its popularity, Swanson subsequently opened the “Sip Shoppe,” in a parlor room next door. It is designed to be more lighthearted and whimsical, painted with pink and white stripes and ice cream parlor tables. Wines are ordered by the taste or by the glass and are served in glass Dixie cups or cordial glasses. Chocolates, cheese, caviar, sorbet and other indulgences are available to pair. In 2015 the Swansons sold the winery to Vintage Wine Estates, but the winery didn’t skip a beat. Vintage has maintained the Napa winery’s charming joie de vivre in how it operates today. Whether it’s a seated wine and food pairing in the Salon, a fun romp through the Sip Shoppe or hanging around on the comfy sofas among the beautiful gardens, within a Valley ripe with more intimate tasting experiences, Swanson’s extra sparkle is truly a hidden gem. or 50 years, Trefethen Family Vineyards has built a legacy crafting premium wines in the Napa Valley. elgeson was born in Minnesota December 31st 1946. Physical challenges kept him hospitalized for his first year. He recalls having an “out of body experience” during that first year which helped him cope with the pain. This sparked his life-long spiritual awareness. As a young man, Helgeson worked in the Head Start program, teaching disadvantaged black children basic skills such as math and the names of colors and zoo animals. In 1969 Helgeson set sail for Hollywood and landed a job in television as a cue card holder, for such shows as Laugh-In and the Dean Martin and Carol Burnette Shows. Subsequently he and Charles Nelson Reilly founded a company writing and producing radio commercials. In 1977 they co-wrote and produced the play The Belle of Amherst, which starred Julie Harris who won a Tony Award for her performance. Helgeson moved to Napa in 1978, and with a group of friends purchased Green Valley Ranch where they created a thriving intentional community that continues today. It was when he got his first computer he discovered a new genre of digital art working with the mathematical beauty of fractals, which he calls the “Thumbprint of God.” He began scanning flower images combining nature, geometric imagery and the sacred found in archetypes. His themes range from the Virgin of Guadalupe, Quan Yin, Krishna, Buddha, dragonflies, flowers and sacred geometry that incorporate vivid colors of infinity and sacred symbols honoring the Divine Feminine. He sees this as adding new colors to traditional imagery bringing old icons into the twenty-first century. “The more I tune within, the more art flows through me.” Helgeson currently

licenses his art to fabric designers and greeting card companies such as Leaning Tree and Robert Kaufman Fabrics and musicians.

Everything changed when Helgeson saw the first photograph of light as both a particle and a wave on March 2, 2015. He began animating his images creating a new kinetic art form which he calls Liquid Light Paintings. They are everchanging moving mandalas of exquisite colors and forms that connect us to our origins found in the structure of life. This rainbow spectrum is now an integrated part of Helgeson’s designs. o what it’s not high noon yet. It’s happy hour somewhere. And having already completed a morning a walk playing 18 holes at Hunter Ranch Golf Course in Paso Robles, it’s a quick drive to my next starting times at Grey Wolf Cellars, Barton Family Wines and Krobar Distillery. The welcome news was these libation establishments are headquartered at the same location, separated only by the capacity to walk a straight line between the wine and spirit’s tasting rooms at the 60-year old renovated farmhouse. If necessary, a brief respite for some comfort food at the on-site Barton’s Kitchen Window is an option. Could there be any more gratifying kick-off to a post-round adventure in Central California Wine Country?

As a child pre-dating the Golden State Highway (a.k.a. I-5), family road trips from Northern California to the State’s southern half journeyed Highway 101 during an era when Paso Robles, located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, consisted of perhaps a half dozen wineries and was basically, a drive-by cow town offering zero incentive for a pit stop unless for fuel. Nowadays, while the hypnotic freeway cutting straight through the heart of the doglegged-shaped state is the quicker route, oh my, how times – and personal lifestyle interests - have changed. The charm of the easy-going ranch lifestyle still exists in Paso Robles but the thriving wine culture, contemporary epicurean adventures, trendy shops, and upscale accommodations have sparked a vibrant and hip culture to justify a bit

longer drive closer to the Pacific Coast. And far more Instagram moments. “Since the 90s, when Paso was known more for its rustic style with less polish on it, this area has evolved like any other burgeoning wine growing region with people looking for affordable land to set up shop,” said former Justin Vineyards winemaker, Steve Glossner who, along with his wife Lola, started PasoPort ten years ago to focus on port-style wines and recently expanding into another combo wine/ spirit’s venture with Pendray’s Distillery. “Eventually, Paso started attracting a fresh group of winemakers who were better educated, well traveled, and wanting to push the envelope. That’s great for consumers because it’s raised the quality level and boosted tourism. Currently, the official stat on the number of wineries in Paso Robles is, well, there is none. The word around the vines places the sum between 200-300, from funky and colorful to reserved and relaxing, with wines ranging from Spanish to Italian, Bordeaux to Rhône, Pinot Noir to Chardonnay or the area’s heritage varietal Zinfandel. Regardless of the exact tally, when counting the local ten distilleries and seven breweries, there are plenty of fermented outposts to satisfy anyone’s booze preference. For touring oenophiles Highway 46, that intersects with Highway 101, serves as the main artery linking a steady trail of wineries, from Tobin James Cellars, the furthest east winery (and $0 tasting fee!), to Castoro Cellars on the west side where you can combine wine tasting with playing the 18-hole Whale Rock Disc Golf Course that zigzags around its vineyards and maybe discover a whale bone in the

soil that was under water millions of years ago, though it’s 25-30 miles from the Pacific Ocean. In present-day El Paso de Robles (“The Pass of the Oaks”), whether throwing a disc, biking, hiking, tasting wine, beer or whiskey, or even a visit to Hearst Castle, it would be ambitious to cram so many activities into a single-day visit. To facilitate that quandary the evolving caliber of accommodations is proving to be a key factor energizing the metamorphosis of Paso Robles. How and When the Next Market Crash May Happen  BY RICH JACOBSON

A

s you most probably know, the current bull market is now the second longest in recorded history. Between March 6th 2009 and September 14th, 2018 the S&P 500 gained 334% over 9.5 years. This is second only to the bull market that lasted from December 1987 until March 2000 when the S&P gained 582% over a 12.3 yr period. Naturally, the question increasingly has become how long the current bull market can continue and what, ultimately, will cause it to end. Everyone, it seems, has an opinion on the matter with some pundits issuing dire warnings for months, if not years. In regard to how long the bull market can continue, it’s worth noting that a range of stimulative policies, such as corporate tax reform, have given this market additional legs it might not otherwise have. The resulting increase in economic growth has been sufficient to drive employment lower, wages higher, produced more consumer spending and increased business profits.

Unless and until something undoes this virtuous cycle, stock market prices may be able to hang onto their all-time highs. So, what could undo this positive scenario? Plenty. We are on the cusp of mid-term elections. Policies that have sustained and driven the market to its present heights can easily be reversed by policies that emphasize redistribution of wealth as opposed to the creation of wealth. Political risk is a huge factor in the U.S. these days. Another risk is the ongoing trade negotiations and tariff threats we are locked into with key trading partners. The talks going on may produce a more favorable outcome for U.S. exporters if they come to a successful conclusion. If they don’t, however, and we find ourselves in a “war” of countervailing tariffs, U.S. consumers and some U.S. companies may get hurt. The stock market would probably react very negatively to a deteriorating global trade situation.

Another risk is that, after years of “quantitative easing”, the Federal Reserve is now in a “tightening” phase. If Interest rates increase too much or the Fed withdraws too much money from the economy, they could choke off credit, cause a housing market and business investment recession, which most likely would lead to layoffs, higher unemployment, reduced consumer spending and, potentially, a recession. If the stock market senses this scenario may be in the offing, stocks would sell off very swiftly and without much warning. What does all this mean for you as an investor? Now would be the right time to check that your portfolio is properly diversified, your risk exposure is reasonable, you have sufficient liquidity to weather a financial storm and that your overall financial plan is on solid footing. In more colloquial Napa Valley terms; check the roof while the sun is still out and before the winter rains hit.

of youth sports in the valley. For example, a new line of chocolate bars featuring the Shackfords’ favorite flavors will be sold at the store with the proceeds going to local youth sports programs. The Shackfords and the Merkleys sponsored the Shackford Foul Ball at the Silverado’s baseball inaugural season. Anyone who caught the Shackford sponsored baseball received a 10% discount at the store and is part of a grand prize drawing. Patrick and Alix Merkley moved from Marin 25 years ago, raising their daughters in the valley and bringing them to Shackford’s every time Patrick, a culinary fanatic, wanted to treat himself to a new knife, Cuisinart or All-Clad pan. It was at that time he stumbled upon Shackford’s and knew instantly that he hoped to own the store. He

spent years shopping at Shackford’s, admiring John’s entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to tradition and community. Seven years ago (and at least once a year since!), he asked the Shackfords about one day taking over the store. 2018 proved to be his lucky year. Several exciting changes are planned. Additions include a Demonstration Kitchen, culinary classes and product demonstrations. The Merkleys will expand the management and retail team by adding to existing staff, including a Resident Executive Chef. Several of the Shackfords family will continue to work at the store. The Napa Valley community has been built on the foundation of a love for food and wine, and Shackford’s is an essential component of that foundation. The Merkleys are committed to continuing the legacy of service to the culinary novice and the culinary professional in Napa Valley for years to come.

Bryan Gardner’s fondness for working in the kitchen began while he was growing up in New England. Born into a family of foodies and raised on some of the finest seafood from the Coast of Maine, it didn’t take long for him to develop an early appreciation for the multidimensional expressions of food, both in its consumption or preparation.

fter studying English and History at the University of Southern Maine, Bryan longed to fulfill his passion for food and went on to study culinary arts at the New England Culinary Institute in Vermont. His graduation from NECI in 2005 launched an impressive career working among some of Napa Valleys’ finest Michelin Star restaurants, including the Restaurant at Meadowood and Terra. Anxious to expand his food horizons and his love for Asian food, in 2008, Bryan set out on an adventure exploring South-East Asia. He ended up settling for several years in Siem Reap, Cambodia serving in the esteemed position as the Executive Chef at the Relais & Chateaux property, Hotel de la Paix. When the hotel was sold and became the Park Hyatt Siem Reap in 2012, Bryan returned to Calistoga with his wife and two daughters and for the next six years, went on to leverage his culinary prowess within two of Napa Valley’s renowned kitchensElaine Bell Catering Company and Auberge’s Calistoga Ranch. After spending many years developing and serving some of Napa Valley’s finest menus, Bryan became eager to explore the vital relationship between wine and food and in 2018 he accepted the position as Winery Chef at Peju Winery in Rutherford, CA. In this pivotal role, he oversees the culinary program at the winery’s multiple Napa Valley locations. 96

We caught up with him there to learn more about what’s cooking at Peju. Peju’s myriad of wine and food experiences range from a simple wine and cheese pairing to an intimate roll up your sleeves farm to table cooking and dining event. What are some of your favorite dishes or pairings you have developed for the program? I love being able to tie in the seasonal produce from our garden and surrounding farms with our food and wine experiences. We are constantly working on new concepts, but thus far my favorite experiences are our pizza challenges and dinners, executed with the help of our beautiful Mugnaini pizza oven. The challenges are lots of fun for our guests, the ingredients are super fresh, the pizza is always a winner, and it effortlessly pairs with a number of our wines. It is also a lot of fun for everyone involved.

Peju is launching a new sensory experience called “The Art of Seeing” which incorporates the beauty of the land combined with art, wine, and food. How did this come about and do you have any other creative, immersive experiences up your sleeve? The concept is a collaborative effort between the “experience team,” the wine educators, producers, and the culinary team. We wanted to come up with a truly immersive artistic experience and believe that wine and food can be vehicles of artistic expression


as much as paint on canvas. Guests will be able to incorporate tutelage of professional photographers, wine educators, and our culinary team members for a full day of landscape photography, food photography and consumption of delicious wine and food. We are always brainstorming new concepts, and we have some exciting new experiences in the pipeline. During the time you were working as an Executive chef in Southeast Asia, did any of the foods you discovered there inspire your vision for the culinary program at Peju? I have always had a deep love of South-East Asian food, and it was one of the main reasons I began living and working in the region as a chef. Great fresh, seasonal ingredients and herbs are essential to great South-East Asian food, so it can be tricky to replicate in a different climate on the other side of the world. One of the hallmarks of Cambodian food is finishing a dish with the freshness of a variety of local herbs. I love to try to use techniques, components and flavor profiles like this at Peju whenever I can. I also like the challenge of dispelling the myth that Asian food does not pair well with wine. Luckily, we have a multitude of wines in our portfolio that are very food friendly and work with many different flavor profiles. Moving forward, I hope to start offering even more in this realm to our experience programs, such as curry-making cooking classes with wine pairings, Asian cuisine inspired dinners and cooking challenges. What is your favorite ingredient to cook with and why? That is a very tough question to answer! There so many fantastic ingredients to work with out there. For example, living without fresh herbs would be pretty hard to do. Living in California provides me with great year-round access to them, and their abundance offers up many varying layers of size, pungency, strength and combination possibilities. Is there a chef you’ve worked with or aspire to work with whose style you admire most? I will always admire and try and follow the example of my mentor and very good friend Chef Joannes Riviere. He is currently

the chef/co-owner of Cuisine Wat Damnak in Siem Reap, Cambodia. He was the executive chef at Hotel de la Paix when I initially worked there as the lead Sous Chef. From him I learned great technique, recipes and how to manage a business, but also the importance of humility, having fun in your job and life and respecting the knowledge and experience entire staff, from the sommelier to the dishwasher. There are many great chefs out there, but I would love the opportunity to work with and learn from Rene Redzepi and David Thompson. Where do you like to eat? That depends on my mood. I love a good bowl of pho in a small, tucked away greasy spoon just as much as freshly shucked oysters with some bubbly by the ocean or a five-course meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant. For every day here in Napa, I love some bruschetta and kale salad from Clif Family Bruschetteria or a sandwich from Genova’s Deli. What is your favorite dish to cook at home? When we have friends over, I love to make some of my favorite Asian dishes, like prahok kti or cha trap dot, or even a quick pad thai. Unfortunately, so often when I cook at home, I’m beat, I have two little kids, and it needs to come together rather quickly. I often end up making pasta with some salad from the garden. It’s simple, tasty, and more importantly, my little girls love it. What’s left on your life’s “to-do” list? My entire family and I love to travel. We have all been blessed to visit a lot of places around the world, but there is still so much world out there to explore. I’ve always dreamed about opening a place of my own, but for now, our life is good, and we’re enjoying life in the Valley. Any insightful words of advice for up and coming winery chefs? I am still quite new to the winery “cheffing” business, so I don’t know that I am in a great spot to be doling out advice quite yet but I think it’s important to get to know visitors to the Valley. They have a lot of great experiences and life stories to tell, and connecting with them while sharing this beautiful place is a great way to expand your horizons.
