elcome to our Annual Home and Garden issue. Napa Valley Life is once again honored to sponsor the Kitchen in the Vineyards tour happening April 28. Five beautiful Napa Valley homes are showcased on the tour, and we have provided a sneak-peak so you can feel enticed to see the homes in person. Proceeds from this event benefit the Music in the Vineyards summer concert series. One of my favorite things to do in the Valley, besides drink awesome wine, is wandering around the incredible gardens that adorn the Napa landscape. Many wineries offer outdoor experiences beyond the wine, which include floral gardens, koi fish ponds and sustainable vegetable gardens. In this issue, we feature a handful that are worth a visit.

Kari Ruel with Anne Alderson, Owner of Brick and Mantel Photo: Art & Clarity

Part of my job is to interview intriguing local characters and inspirational people. None was more-true than having brunch with the younger Mondavi sisters who are part of the fourth generation of the Mondavi legacy. These four siblings have a strong work ethic, are humble and are full of life. They will be the honorary chairs of the 38th Annual Auction Napa Valley coming up the end of May. Welcome Brick and Mantel to the Napa Valley. Owner Anne Alderson moved her interior design business to Napa last summer and already has plans to expand by her one-year anniversary. Anne’s easy-going and collaborative work style helps her create unique spaces as unique as her clients. Every time I meet with Anne, she has an interesting take on a new interior design fad or idea. She is just a cool person to hang out with and I’m thrilled to showcase some of her work in Napa Valley Life. Finally, I am so proud of our talented team of designers, writers and photographers. it’s a collaborative effort to put out Napa Valley Life magazine six times a year. I founded the publication 20-years ago, but one person cannot put out a magazine the caliber of Napa Valley Life alone. Napa Valley Life Magazine was recently the recipient of the award for the “Best City & Regional Magazine” category at the 2018 Nichee Awards. The Nichee Awards honors excellence in publishing and design. Each year Nichee selects through multiple entries of high-end, comprehensive magazines and selects one ultimately to take home the honor of “Best City & Regional Magazine”. This year, Napa Valley Life Magazine flew to the top for the artistry, layout, design and content. Thank you team. Cheers,

A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE:

“FEATURED CLIENT SPOTLIGHT”

A Family to Admire:

Napa Wooden Box Co.  BY VALERIE OWENS

In a valley known for quality and tradition, Napa Wooden Box Co. has been making their mark since 1988. Since their inception, the company that manufactures wooden packaging as well as point-ofpurchase displays has skyrocketed over the years and is now one of the top producers in the wine industry. In 1989, Fred and Diane Chase aquired Napa Wooden Box Co. The Chase’s direction and capital allowed the business to grow and expand. The decision would revolutionize the company for generations to come. “My Dad was always an optimist,” said Napa Wooden Box Co. President, Greg Chase. “I think he wanted to get back to his building roots.” Today, the Chase family has owned and operated Napa Wooden Box Co. for 29 years. While Diane Chase continues to be a mainstay in the company by administering their accounting initiatives, Fred and Diane’s sons, Greg and Jeff Chase have taken the helm. Though, the company has grown from 10 employees to 48, fulfills orders anywhere from 1,000 to 4,000 boxes a day and represents hundreds of wineries, Napa Wooden Box Co. has remained a small, and

tight knit family. “Our favorite aspect of the business is the people we work with and the clients. We have had employees that have been with us since 1989,” said Greg Chase. “We have really good people and that has been one of the biggest keys to our success.”

Adding to the sentiment,“I know we are family, but the whole thing is a family operation,” said Napa Wooden Box Co. Senior Account Executive , Jeff Chase. “There are guys that have been here longer than I have. We have had brothers, and cousins. In the office, me, my brother and mom still eat lunch together. It’s a really nice tradition.” A company synonymous with quality and exceptional service, Napa Wooden Box Co. has been providing exquisite boxes and displays for generations. “We are honored to work with a family that has deep roots in the valley. Their success is built on years of hard work and cultivating a workplace culture to admire ,” said Senior Partner at New Aspect Financial Services, LLC. Karin Alvarado.

Tips for Preparing your home to sell

If you plan to sell your home this year, now is a good time to start preparing your home for market.

Tom’s 5 tips to Success!

1. Have Property Inspections Be proactive by arranging for a pre-sale home inspections. For $250 to $400, an inspector will warn you about troubles that could make potential buyers balk.

2. Clear the Clutter Clear your kitchen counters of just about everything. Clean your closets by packing up little-used items. Put at least one-third of your furniture in storage, especially large pieces, such as entertainment centers and big televisions. Pack up family photos, knickknacks, and wall hangings to depersonalize your home.

3. Hiring a Staging Consultant

1. Napa Valley Home Cleared of Clutter 2. Napa Valley Home Partially Staged 3. Napa Valley Home with Full Staging

Napa Valley offers some really amazing staging consultants to help you present your home in its best light. Stagers can either blend their inventory in with your existing décor while others will stage certain rooms or an entire home if it happens to be a vacant residence.

4. Professional Photography

Contact Tom today for a complimentary market valuation of your home or income property.

95% of today’s home buyer first see the home online and scroll through each photo before deciding to visit the home in person. Professional photos (usually 20-25) in conjunction with Tips 1-3 will help make that all important first impression!

5. Correct Pricing! Correct pricing can be paramount to your success. Overpricing, you run the risk of losing the first wave of buyer’s which could include your best buyer! Underpricing a seller runs the risk of selling the home short of its true market value.

The Youngest Honorary Chairs Will Host This Year’s Auction Napa Valley  BY KARI RUEL

C

harles Krug Winery, the oldest Napa Valley winery, has a new generation stepping up to the plate. In 1943, the helm of this legendary winery was taken over by Cesare Mondavi who passed the stewardship onward to Peter Mondavi, Sr. Peter Mondavi advanced the winery into the modern era with numerous innovations in winery operations and vineyard management. Peter died at the age of 101 and passed the winery onto his sons Peter and Marc. The fourth-generation Mondavis are now more involved in the family-run business as shareholders, board members and brand ambassadors. On May 31-June 2, Marc and Janice’s four daughters, Angelina, age 35, Alycia, age 31, Riana, age and Giovanna (Gigi), age 25 will be hosting this year’s 38th Annual Auction Napa Valley (ANV), the American Wine Classic.   Napa Valley Vintners (NVV), a nonprofit association, directs Auction Napa Valley to raise funds for community health and children’s education. On the plus side, ANV offers unparalleled wine and food experiences that includes vintner parties, dinners, and a Friday Barrel Auction. The crescendo of the weekend is the Live Auction Celebration 24

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

at Meadowood Napa Valley. Under the big tent bidders will vie for Napa Valley’s finest wines, world-class adventures and treasures of the rarest kind. Once the last gavel falls, guests will enjoy an Italian-inspired dinner by one of San Francisco’s most beloved chefs, Nancy Oakes of Boulevard. Dancing under stars will follow. For the first time - and not to be missed - will be the first after Party by the three-Michelinstarred Chef Christopher Kostow and James Beard Award winner Nathaniel Dorn’s at their new restaurant, The Charter Oak. To celebrate the 75th Anniversary, the Barrel Auction will be hosted at Charles Krug Winery.    The Mondavi women are the youngest group to chair this world-renown Wine Charity Auction. They selected Then and Now as the theme for this year.   “My sisters and I thought it was fitting to pay homage to our legacy mainly because the Mondavi family has been in the wine industry for 75-years,” said Angelina, a winemaker in her own right. “We wanted to honor those who have groomed this amazing path to benefit our community and also to throw in a nod to some new fun stuff that you will be seeing at Auction this year.”   The sisters were all born and raised in the Napa Valley. Each of the women ventured out on their own for college and professional opportunities.    “Angelina and I have been living in the Napa Valley for a few years now,” said Alycia. “And we were asked if the sisters would be interested in chairing Auction Napa Valley. We explored whether we should bring in the entirety of the Fourth Generation or keep it the sisters? Because we are all scattered across the US, we decided to keep it the four sisters.”    Expect some new sizzle at this year’s auction. Each sister has contributed a little flair of their own for this year’s Auction, but they are all tight lipped on the specifics.

“It will still be Auction Napa Valley that people will recognize and celebrate, but there are little twists we have done to switch it up,” said Riana. “While the overall experience will be what everyone loves, I think people will be excited to see the changes we’ve made to the layout, design and entertainment. So many people have been to Auction Napa Valley and we want to re-excite them with the Then and Now. We are also bringing back some old traditions and introducing what we hope will be new traditions.”    Though two of the sisters live a thousand miles apart, the sisters all get along and communicate every day. Gigi works in finance in Boston and Riana lives in Dallas selling CK Mondavi nationally. They joke that they have 200 emails/texts going back and forth per day.   “There are times when we split on things two and two,” said Riana. “If we bicker like sisters do, it’s usually followed up with ‘let’s go get drinks.’ Any bickering is short live.”   The sisters were required to work at the winery starting at age 10 on during the summers. “We were a farming family,” said Riana. “Everyone worked seven days a week. We woke up early and went to bed late.”   “We learned good work ethic,” said Angelina. “We are all workaholics. We learned that from our parents and watching our grandfather.” All four sisters bring their own talents and expertise to the wine industry. Angelina is a winemaker on numerous projects. Gigi the youngest, specializes in finance. Riana works in sales and marketing. Alycia focuses on launching new brands, viticulture practices, wine labeling, advertising law, and grape contracts. Besides owning their own labels, they all co-own the labels, Aloft and Dark Matter Wines.

“It was us stepping away from the family and doing something unique,” said Gigi, who left the Valley at age 13 to attend school internationally. “When I come back I’m enchanted with the valley. I’m really appreciative of what Napa Valley offers between the food, the people and the community support and of course, the wine. It’s captivating.”   The sisters all agree it was humbling to learn what the Mondavi name meant outside of the Napa Valley.    “It was family,” said Alycia. “We didn’t know it as anything other than family. We had family dinners. As we got older, happy hour was with grandpa. He had happy hour every day at 5:00 and we were all invited to join in.”    “As a winemaker, there are always eyes watching us and seeing what we are doing next,” said Angelina. “It wasn’t until I started traveling to other countries, that I realized what the family name meant to other people around the world. You hear stories about people’s first wines that help transcend them into the wine industry or winemaking and it often involved our family’s wines - whether it was Charles Krug or Robert Mondavi. Its humbling in a way. We wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for our grandfather, Peter, or Robert, our uncle.”   The NVV has donated $180 million in children’s education and community health in Napa County, including a $10 million lead grant toward establishing the Napa Valley Community Disaster Relief Fund, especially critical during last fall’s wildfires. In the last year alone, proceeds from Auction Napa Valley contributed to the wellbeing of more than 100,000 clients of the Napa County nonprofits. One of the nonprofits awarded is OLE Health which serves as the primary care provider for one in six residents of Napa County. SPRING 2018

NAPA’S DAVID KERNS WITH NEW NOVEL, FORTNIGHT ON MAXWELL STREET, SET IN 1968 CHICAGO

D

avid Kerns is a Napa-based journalist, retired Stanford medical professor and 40year pediatrician with a new novel. The Plot is set mainly in Chicago in the days immediately preceding and following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is rigorously researched modern historical fiction, a reluctant medical hero’s journey and a narrative depiction of racism DAVID KERN that is, it appears, as relevant today as it was a half century ago.   FORTNIGHT ON MAXWELL STREET is out in time for the 50th Anniversary of Kings’ assassination. That historic moment is the murder of Dr. King and its violent immediate aftermath, which is the setting for the climax of the story. Kerns includes a microscopic depiction of James Earl Ray. It followed him from his escape from the Missouri State Penitentiary to his volunteerism with the George Wallace campaign to the rifle purchase in Birmingham to his stalking of Dr. King from Atlanta to Memphis, and finally to the assassination itself.   In counterpoint to Ray, the racism of the story’s protagonist, which is tested and ultimately overcome, is fearful but not hateful. This portrayal draws heavily on Kerns’ own experiences as a white medical student working in Chicago’s poorest minority neighborhoods in the 1960’s.   “The book began as a memoir,” said Kerns. “When I made a decision that it was not going to be a memoir, there was plenty of me embedded in

the character, Nick. I didn’t, obviously, have all of the experiences that the character had, but a good deal of the back story, a good deal of the family background, growing up as a Jewish kid in inner city Chicago, and probably a fair amount of the psychology of the character influenced my writing. Having said that, I’m not Nick. I didn’t have all of the experiences Nick had. What I would say is that my own experience certainly formed the character.”    What is real and what is fiction? Kerns said much of the historical events in the book have been carefully researched and are very authentic. The struggle of the maternity center existed in Chicago.   “The actual plot, the actual story, is fictional,” said Kerns. “In other words, the way the thing unfold in Nick’s experience is fictional. When I was at the Chicago Maternity Center, it was three months before the King assassination. Nick is there when it happens. The events around the assassination, the chaos, the riots, the fires in inner city Chicago is the setting for the climax of the story. That didn’t happen to me. If I’d been there three months later, it might have happened to me.”   Kerns said he had this amazing setting for his book, which were young and experienced medical students going to these slum tenements delivering babies on kitchen tables.    “It’s kind of amazing that happened, but it did and it did for decades,” said Kerns. “Trial by fire, scary experiences were during that time. In the true story, I had these episodic events, but they didn’t line up in a narrative arc. In the book, the reluctant hero, Nick helps a pregnant 14-year old when the riots break out. Lots of twists in the story and the ending may surprise you.”   The author will be chatting and signing books at Bookmine at the Oxbow Public Market from noon - 2 p.m on Sunday, April 15, 2018. The book is available at amazon. com in soft copy and Kindle.

THE NOVEL The novel’s front cover photograph was taken by award-winning Time/LIFE photographer Fritz Goro. Taken in 1954 at a Chicago Maternity Center home delivery, it was part of a large pictorial collection depicting urban decay in mid-twentieth century Chicago. Kerns described the "treasure hunt" required to acquire the rights to the photo, a name change complicating the search for the heirs of the long-deceased photographer.

Archer Napa and Charlie Palmer Steak Lead Downtown’s Renaissance  BY FRAN ENDICOTT MILLER

Having long been considered a pass-through to other popular wine country locales, downtown Napa now finds itself THE destination. World class cuisine and shopping, public art, live entertainment venues, wine tasting rooms galore, and chic lodging options have elevated downtown Napa’s status as an ‘in’ place to be. At the heart of this renaissance is the new Archer Napa and its signature restaurant, Charlie Palmer Steak. 38

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

Wine country artistry abounds at Archer Napa, from the vine-like laser cut ceiling entry, to the custom grapevine chandelier inset into the lobby sky light, to quarried Napa stone walls. Every detail is curated to reflect the hotel’s viticultural setting. And if guests experience a “Where am I?” lapse, the large, custom-made topographical map lining an entire lobby wall and detailing the Valley’s AVA districts provides a distinct reminder.

A large, central, circular bar – part of the lobby lounge - takes center stage, and flows directly into the marquee Charlie Palmer Steak restaurant. This fifth Palmer outpost is led by executive chef Jeffery Russell who, with Palmer, oversees the hotel’s culinary offerings including those at the soon to open Sky & Vine Rooftop Bar high above downtown Napa. Sky & Vine is the only vista of its kind in downtown Napa and will afford 360° views of the Valley. For the time being, Archer’s lobby is the ‘in’ place to be where both locals and tourists encircle the bar nightly during the area’s most happening happy hour (4pm – 7pm) and relax on low-slung lobby settees while dining on Palmer fare. The party-like vibe is infectious, and a bit of a contrast to the more restrained wine country hospitality for which the area is known.   Palmer shapes his ‘Progressive American Cuisine’ menu with bold, strait-forward style inspired by Napa’s agricultural and viticultural regions. Russell (a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and longtime Charlie Palmer Group chef) executes the Palmer vision where focus is on robust cuts of beef served with a choice of sauces, and regional seafood dishes. Highlights include a 4 oz. Wagyu steak imported from Japan, a bone-in Tomahawk for two, American Wagyu Beef Carpaccio served with kimchi crackers, and a delicate Hudson Valley Seared Foie Gras. More than 400 labels are featured on the wine list; half are from Napa Valley, and several are available by the glass.   The hotel features six varied room sizes and styles, all in shades of cream, gray, and gold. Forty-nine of the 183 rooms and suites offer private balconies and/or fireplaces with lounge seating and signature Archer blankets to ward off nighttime chill. Additionally, each of the hotel’s five floors highlights in-room and hallway art by local artists and collectives, and public spaces spotlight important works in a range of mediums.   Room amenities include Frette bathrobes, Malin+Goetz bath products, his-and-hers slippers,

Archer Hotel Napa, Charlie Palmer

Nespresso coffee machines, temperature-controlled wine coolers, and fully-stocked refreshment bars featuring Clif Family Kitchen treats. Bottles of Fiji water and salted caramels from Anette’s Chocolates (across from the hotel on First St.) greet each guest upon room arrival. A signature element of the Archer brand is the nightly turndown ritual spanning an eight-item rotation of locally curated treats. The destinationspecific Napa offerings include locally made chocolates, cookies, and bars.    Archer is allegedly a real person, and though his identity remains a mystery, his taste, personality, and voice are exhibited in whimsical touches. Every room features a copy

of Archer’s favorite book, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Additional bedside reading includes a tome representative of the hotel’s location. At Archer Napa, it’s 24-Hour Wine Expert (natch) by Jancis Robinson. VISIT US:

Anne discovered her niche for home design at nineteen, when she designed and built her first custom home in Lake Tahoe.    “I have always been creative,” says Anne. “I moved out of my parents’ house early and became interested in interior spaces. I created the floor plan, finalized all the details and managed the entire project of my first home. It was an amazing experience to understand the building process and this knowledge continues to help my clients with their dream homes.”    Anne decided to pursue her talents and started working for a high-end interior design firm in

Tahoe, while earning her Interior Design degree at University of Nevada Reno. After graduating in 2006, she sat for the NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) and became a professional member of ASID – a certification not all designers carry.   “Because our industry is not highly regulated through state exams, like an architect or engineer, anyone can hang out their shingle calling themselves a designer,” says Anne. “An ASID certification is an easier way for a potential client to recognize that you’ve taken the steps and received the education to be qualified for the job. The NCIDQ exam, required for the certification, is a twoday exam requiring knowledge in both residential and commercial design.” 46

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

In 2007, Anne opened her own highend design studio and home accessories store in Truckee. After a few years, she grew tired of the winters and wanted to be in a location where she could ride her horses year-round. So, in 2011, she closed her store and relocated to a ranch, in Sonoma County. The following year, she took over a family-run furniture store in Petaluma and turned it into a flourishing interior design and home furnishings studio, eventually renaming it Brick and Mantel.   Even though Brick and Mantel was based in Petaluma, Anne immediately began working all over the valley. One such collaboration was a 2000 Napa Home, which made The Napa Valley Life Cover Shoot. The owner brought in Brick and

Mantel to update the interior furnishings and offer paint consultation.   “The main interior color of the house was an existing yellow/gold plaster,” says Anne. “The design and scale of furniture throughout this house needed to balance with the BIG view, which is the focal point of every room in this house. It also had to work with the high-ceilings and existing color palate.”   “The owners’ desire was to create a less traditional house and have a more California Traditional or Napa Traditional,” she added. “It’s a blend of the laid back, indoor/outdoor vibe of Northern California, some elements of traditional design (dark wood, movement in patterns, curves, visually heavy) and more transitional or contemporary pieces

TIPS

For Creating Your Dream Home: Start with considering how you use or will use your space. What functions does it need to perform? Reading and conversation? Watching TV? Dining or multi-use?

• How many people do you need to accommodate on a daily basis? How many during holidays or entertaining? • Assess how people will move through the space and create furniture groups around that flow. • Decide on a main focal point. It can be a view, television, fireplace, etc. If you have more than one focal point rank them on importance TO YOU • Gather your inspiration. Create a pinterest board or cutouts from magazines and mark up what you like about the space, flooring, paint, layout, woodwork, etc • Pick something you love to be your starting point. A vase, an heirloom, a painting or even a color swatch and build your space from there. If it’s a strong color, ground the color with neutrals. • Consider your lighting, both natural and artificial. It is THE MOST important and often the most overlooked in the planning process • Layer in texture and pattern with accents • If you’re working with an entire home at one time, start with the big pieces in each room and accessorize from there

lighter in scale and pattern, cleaner lines, texture but not a lot of color.”   Last year, she decided to move the Brick and Mantel store to Napa, wanting to be closer to her life with her fiancé. Napa has embraced Brick & Mantel and the business is growing with a wider selection of furniture, accessories and lighting coming later this year.    “Watch for hosted events this fall when we kick off our “bubbles & bites” series, holiday decorating workshops, trunk shows and design and build Q&A sessions,” says Anne.   The bigger location will also include space for local and visiting interior designers to meet with their

clients, as well as interior design offices for those who want to have an office and a showroom to work with clients.    So, what can you expect when you work with Brick & Mantel on your next home project? Anne says, “With every project, I use resources, education, longevity in this business and sometimes a little alcohol to help them create their story, but it’s never “mine.” It’s all dictated by their desires.” VISIT US:

• Once you’ve made a decision on something you love, stick with it and move on. The possibilities are infinite and it’s easy (and normal) to feel overwhelmed. Not second guessing your choices will help you to keep moving forward • Hire a professional, even if it’s only in your budget for an hour. A professional that has been trained in space planning will be able to quickly analyze your space and help you prioritize your goals, budget plan, give you a boost in confidence on the choices you’ve made and answer questions you have. • HAVE FUN! This space is about you and what makes you feel at home, so worry less about what’s on trend and more about what makes you happy.

Perinet What do wineries in Napa, San Luis Obispo, and Spain’s Priorat region have in common – aside from shared ownership? Answer: more than meets the eye. When Robin and Michelle Baggett added Perinet to their current portfolio of San Luis Obispo’s Tolosa and Rutherford’s Alpha Omega, they created a cohesive and complementary triangle of sister properties that produce world class wines. But beyond the superior end product extracted by each property’s winemaker (l to r: Toni SanchezOrtiz of Perinet, Frederic Delivert of Tolosa, and Jean Hoefliger of Alpha Omega) the three wineries share a harmonic philosophy inspired by a solid sense of place from whence they originate. Alpha Omega’s Bordeauxinspired releases, Tolosa’s renowned Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, and Perinet’s Mediterranean reds are all products of their rock-laden soil terroirs, each rich in acidity. Each winemaker believes in showcasing the purest personality of the grapes from his region; and the most important common trait of all - each of the wines is delicious. SPRING 2018

What kind of footprints will you leave for those who follow?

What do you want your legacy to be? For us, there was no better way to have an impact than through a legacy gift to Queen of the Valley. After being regular contributors to the Queen for years, we decided it was time to do more. So, we named the Queen as a beneficiary in our estate plan. To solidify our plan, we met with Damon Tinnon, Director of Gift Planning, who described a range of planned giving options available to us. We chose an approach that allows us to maximize our gift today, while preserving the assets we need for the future. We believe that those who’ve benefited from the Queen’s excellent care have a responsibility to carry on this tradition into the future. Our family is proud to be a part of the Queen’s legacy of healing. We urge you to talk to the Queen about what you can do. —Charlie and Karen Agnew

Laura Larson Founder, Virtual Vines DTC Consulting Services www.virtual-vines.com Virtual Vines provides DTC sales and marketing services & training focused on relationship selling and the intrinsic value of building connections with customers. In this series we focus on wineries that are connecting with customers through memorable guest experiences.

B CELLARS 703 Oakville Cross Napa, CA 94562 www.bcellars.com B Cellars Founders, Jim Borsack and Duffy Keys took a mutual dream of making wine and owning a winery and turned it into what is now one of Napa Valley’s most successful partnerships. Two years after meeting at a party, Borsack and Duffy took that dream and turned it into reality. After securing a commitment from Kurt Venge to become their winemaker, in 2003 they launched B Cellars. The “B’ stands for Brix (a measure of sugar levels found in grapes) and is aptly suited for the nexus of their winemaking strategy which centers on finding the highest quality grapes and creating unique blends from multiple vineyards. Today they offer approximately thirty different wines, many of which are sourced from some of Napa Valley’s most prestigious vineyards including Andy Beckstoffers’ coveted ToKalon, Georges III, and Dr. Crane. Like many winemakers, they started small, sharing space in tasting rooms in Napa and Calistoga. In 2013 they seized the opportunity to acquire the Vintage Oak Horse Ranch, which they transformed into the winery and hospitality center tucked away on Oakville Cross.    Hidden from view until you pull in front of the property, B Cellars building exteriors are modestly positioned among six acres of young cabernet grapevines and handsome, manicured lawns. Their 15,000 square foot cave subtly beckons from the butte of the property behind the winery building.    The Hospitality Center is the convergence point for visitors, and its’ inviting floor to ceiling glass walls and doorways offer spectacular views of the patios and working gardens once inside. The open-air working kitchen bustles with activity and the preparation of small bites for the daily pairing menu. After being presented with an amuse bouche consisting of a canape’ and a splash of 56

wine, guests are escorted to the gardens to survey the current bounties. The fifteen plus individual beds rotate to accommodate seasonal harvests and include multiple varieties of vegetables, legumes, herbs, microgreens, fruits, and flowers many which are transformed into the pairing menu which awaits at the end of the tour. Bordering the gardens are fruit orchards, olive trees, bee farms and a fenced enclosure with over sixteen chickens, which donate approximately three dozen eggs per week to the culinary experiences or the staff menu.    The kitchen operates under the careful direction of on-premise chef de cuisine, Derick Kuntz. At the helm for over three years, Chef Kuntz meticulously oversees the creation of the “B Bites” menu which he recreates every few weeks to comprise fresh ingredients gathered from the gardens. The evolving farm to table experience not only demonstrates the versatility of the garden but also complements the diversity of their multi- AVA, multi-varietal winemaking strategy through unique pairings with seasonal harvests.   Along with the wine and farm to table culinary experiences, guests are offered a tour of the multiuse cave which serves its purpose to support winery production and storage, it is also exquisitely appointed to host guests for barrel sampling, intimate tasting experiences, and large group events.   Jim Borsack and Duffy Keys built B Cellars based on a passion for food and love of wine and set out to ensure their guests have the richest experiences possible. The combination of progressive seasonal menus paired with innovative winemaking is intended to bring out their wines’ finest attributes. This strategy, combined with the passionate staff who execute the vision, delivers on that commitment. All bookings are facilitatedby advance reservations only. www.bcellars.com/visit/ 707-709-8787.

BOESCHEN VINEYARDS 3242 Silverado Trail North St. Helena, CA 94574 www.boeschenvineyards.com    A visit to Boeschen Vineyards makes one feel as if they’ve been transported to a lush plantation in the Deep South. Originally built in 1890 for the paramour of a prominent businessman, it was also the home of a Russian Princess, an eclectic State arborist and a myriad of horticulture based businesses, including production walnut and prune orchards, a camelia nursery, a Christmas tree farm, and of course, grapes.    The subtle entrance off of the north end of Silverado Trail opens up to a long gravel driveway which winds through undulating rows of grapevines. Guests park in a circular roundabout and are greeted by staff or a family member, (most likley Doug Boeschen) in front of a reconstructed barn and the winery caves. Doug is the GM and winemaker, and production and vineyard operations are humble, supported by just four employees. Doug’s parents, Dann and Susan, reside on the property in the original house, which they purchased in 1999. While the initial strategy was to farm and sell the property’s eleven acres of producing fruit, Doug was the motivational force to transform the business into an operating winery in 2005. NVL wineries Taking a leap of faith and abandoning his career as a management consultant, Doug immersed himself in the wine business. Through a combination of practical working experience and a degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis, Doug mastered the fine art of winemaking which is revealed in Boeschen’s exquisite Estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Boeschen wines are produced in small lots, with total production ranging between 1000- 1300 cases.   Wine tasting experiences begin in the cave, which deserves an article of its’ own. Designed by Dann Boeschen, it is 100% operationally contained and sustained. The underground space used to harvest and store wine and the hospitality and administrative offices fully operate inside. Several walls have been carved open to reveal the natural layering of the volcanic ash and obsidian rock soil formations which make these acres perfect for growing Cabernet. The garden tour begins from the cave on a second level walkout which overlooks the magical garden artistry of Master Gardener, Susan Boeschen. The grounds are choreographed to recreate a garden from the property’s historical legacy, including the oldest known metal framed greenhouse and species preserved from their original plantings. One of the most astonishing flora is a Lady Banks Rose bush, which is estimated to be 120-150 years old. Undisturbed and left to its wiles, its branches wind around trees and expand to lengths of 70 feet wide and just as many feet high. At full bloom, it boasts thousands of white roses and is a magnificent sight to behold. Susan is a rose lover and started her master garden with hundreds of white roses to adorn the ground for her daughter’s wedding. Over the years the rose garden has evolved to showcase as many as 70 different varietals and over 250 roses which are carefully tended to in geometric plots and also draped elegantly among clematis around the gardens’ pathway arches. As visitors stroll into the center of the gardens, they can relax on the benches to enjoy the lull of the English fountain and savor a splash of wine. Susan has nurtured many of the original and eclectic plantings which have grown to great scale over the years, most noteworthy of which is a 90’ high magnolia 58

tree, which reaches full bloom every summer. Susan’s ultimate design strategy is to ensure something of fragrance is in bloom at all times, but optimum viewing occurs between March and May.   Boeschen Vineyard is truly a special place. It’s quiet dignity and rich background offer anyone who appreciates elegant Estate wines, magnificent gardens, and a step back in time a welcome sojourn from the fast pace of everyday life.    Due to limited production, Wine Tastings at Boeschen are offered by appointment only, with priority bookings reserved for wine club members. TRES SABORES 1620 S Whitehall Lane St. Helena, CA 94574 www.tressabores.com Tucked away in the western hills off of Whitehall Lane, one can escape the busy pace of Highway 29 to discover the enchanting charm of Tres Sabores. The thirty-five-acre property is planted with thirteen acres of vineyards, ten of which produce award-winning zinfandel and the remaining a combination of Cabernet, Petite Verdot, and Petite Syrah. Tres Sabores means “three flavors” and signifies the types of tastes found in wine related to the terroir, the artisan, and

the varietal. Purchased in 1987, owner Julie Johnson pioneered organic farming practices and launched Napa Valley's first certified organic winery in 1991. After producing grapes for Frogs Leap, in 1999, Julie hired three consulting winemakers, Rudy Zuidema, Ken Bernards and Karen Culler to make zinfandel from three separate vineyards. Over the years she became engrossed in the art of winemaking and the micro biological inner workings of the terroir. She learned the natural ecosystem of the land, plants, insects, soils, and other living creatures contributed greatly to the character of the grapes. In 2003, leveraging her hands-on learning experiences and a self-sustaining farming model, Julie took over the reins as winemaker and launched her own label.   A visit to Tres Sabores is much more than a wine tasting experience. As you pull onto the property, five unabashed sheep, part of the “guest relations committee”, take a break from their grazing ritual to conduct a full inspection of your vehicle. Soon Boozy-Rouge and Cava, the winery Golden Retrievers show up on the scene to officially welcome you in. Centered on intriguing the senses through tastes and aromas, Tres Sabores creates immersion experiences designed to bring people closer to the land. The walking tours, often hosted by Julie herself, include a stop in the operating winery, a visit to the caves, a stroll through the vineyards and an intriguing demonstration of biodynamics among the infusion gardens.   Over forty olive trees and a cultivar of two hundred plus pomegranate trees have been producing fruit for over a hundred years and are harvested for Tres

Sabores estate olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The immersion gardens are strategically planted throughout the property to assure efficiency of a natural eco-system. Seasonal harvests include vegetables, herbs, legumes, fruits and flowers and a menagerie of cover crop plantings which shore up operations by providing nourishment to the vineyards

and preventing erosion of the soil. Sunflowers and other seed producing flowers and plants are grown to provide food for the twenty working guinea hens and chickens, who are bobbing nearby, anxious to make your acquaintance. Depending on the season, whatever may be in bloom is fodder to pick, smell and taste as you amble through the gardens. Popular sensory combinations are tomato and basil, persimmons & pineapple sage, mints and fruits from the orchard. At the end of the garden tour, guests are seated on a sunny patio or in the olive grove to relax and enjoy tasting the winery’s current vintages. One of Julie’s most popular labels is “Por Que No?” (“Why Not”) which is comprised of Zinfandel grapes blended from all three vineyards. Julie’s winemaking style is elegant and composition fresh, clean and bright, “just like the food she likes to eat.”   Wine tastings are often accompanied by a garden culinary surprise de jour, like pomegranate brownies, fresh bread with pomegranate balsamic vinegar and olive oil, or cheese with fresh honey. Picnicking club members are often comfortably hanging about enjoying a sunny afternoon.

WHEELER FARMS 588 Zinfandel Lane St. Helena, CA 94574 www.wheelerfarmswine.com For an authentic Napa Valley winery & agricultural experience, one need not look farther than Bart & Daphne Araujo’s newest venture-- Wheeler Farms. When the Araujo’s acquired the 11.5-acre parcel in 2014, it was the last of what was originally deeded as a 2000-acre Carne Humana Spanish land grant. Initially purchased by Charles Wheeler in 1869, the property maintains a rich history in agriculture. Over the years, much of the acreage has been sold off, but while they were its’ stewards, the Wheeler family grew apples, prunes, walnuts, and grapes which they harvested into wine or brandy in a stone winery at Zinfandel Station. Like the Wheeler family, the Araujo’s also share a rich legacy as Napa Valley pioneers and are best known for their success building the Calistoga Eisele Vineyards into Araujo Estate Winery, where they achieved worldwide recognition for producing 5-star cult wines.    When Bart & Daphne acquired Wheeler Farms, they wished to create a new legacy with a state of the art custom crush facility, winery, and hospitality center where likeminded winemakers could collaborate in a setting that honored Napa Valley’s agricultural roots. Since they opened, they have launched their new label, Wheeler Farms Wine, and have partnered with some of Napa Valley’s top wine producers, including Arrow & Branch, TOR, Vice Versa, Booth Bella Oaks, Evinco and Accendo Cellars.   The Araujo’s also felt it was important to preserve the historical nature of the Wheeler Farms property through the architecture and landscape. In addition to planting seven acres of new grapevines 60

and eighty olive trees, they contracted Ron Lusko Associates to design a sustainable garden with an agricultural eco-system that could be optimized in its entirety. With personal touches by Daphne Araujo, the half-acre plot contains twelve 20’ long raised beds, each with a unique theme. Plantings rotate with seasonal vegetables and fruits, which may include tomatoes, beets, peppers, melons, corn, radishes, root vegetables and specialty herbs. At the end of the rows dwarf orchards, and various types of fruit trees produce citrus, apples and stone fruits. The bedding area opens up to a temperature controlled chicken coop (with 35 new baby chickens) two bee-hives and a greenhouse which is used to cultivate microgreens.   According to Elisabeth Russell, who heads up the culinary and garden program, the garden tasting experiences will vary based on seasonality and daily gathered harvests. A typical experience will begin

with a walk through the gardens with a freshly mixed “mocktail” created from fresh fruits or vegetables, and then a visit to the greenhouse and chicken coop to enjoy small bites prepared that day in the Hospitality center’s open-air kitchen. After taking a tour of the state of the art 10,000 square foot production facility, guests are invited back to the Hospitality House to sample a curated selection of premium wines either relaxing indoors or outside on the patio enjoying spectacular views of Mt. St. Helena.    Wheeler Farms offers visitors a unique farm to bottle experience that incorporates a portfolio of fine wines created by ultrapremium winemakers with an opportunity to take part in an authentic agricultural experience reminiscent of a time when Napa Valley wasn’t all vineyards. FAR NIENTE WINERY

1350 Acacia Drive, Oakville www.farniente.com Open 7 days a week 10-3pm by appointment The Far Niente winery is surrounded by 13 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, thought by many to be among the most stunning landscapes in the Napa Valley. Described as “southern” in style, with an emphasis on texture and foliage, the highlight of the Far Niente gardens are the thousands of southern azaleas that bloom every spring, carpeting the estate in brilliant hues of bright red and deep pink. It is said to be the largest single planting of this particular variety of azalea in California, and possibly throughout all of the west coast. At the height of bloom, colorful patches of azaleas are visible from a mile away on Highway 29.   The gardens surrounding the winery offer many intricate details. Hand-shaped and fitted flagstone stairs and pathways traverse the winery grounds, and quaint stone bridges cross over the ponds, adding dimension to the estate. The gardens are also home to a number of specimen trees, including Japanese maple, Japanese snowbell, lion’s head maple, Chinese fringe and saucer magnolia.

CHATEAU MONTELENA

1429 Tubbs Ln, Calistoga, CA 94515 Chateau Montelena’s setting is one of the most peaceful in the Napa Valley - a stone castle carved into a hillside overlooking a Chinese garden, lake and vineyards reaching out to the base of Mount Saint Helena. As true stewards of the land, Chateau Montelena’s topography is a reflection of the gifts of Mother Nature. While they appear to be groomed, the gardens are not heavily manicured; plants and trees typically grow where and how nature intended. Walking the paths around the lake, visitors are surrounded by trees and plants native to the area, including redwoods, oak, madrone, and toyon. Integrated into these natives are non-endemic species that further enhance the beauty

of the gardens, including a number of cherry blossoms, a range of Japanese maple, elm, gingko, and willows. Scattered along the grounds, you’ll also find a variant of fruit trees; including pear, heirloom apple, persimmon, pomegranate, peaches, and plums. The Calistoga AVA offers the perfect climate for citrus, and apart from standards such as mandarins, key limes, naval & blood oranges, Buddha’s hand, Cara Cara, Yuzu, finger lime and pomelo line the paths leading to the tasting room. Jade Lake provides the perfect backdrop for this sanctuary of wildlife flora and hosts fauna such as the mute swans and ducks which call the lake home and the occasional visits of otters and beavers. She speaks in opposites, coming in saying “GOODBYE!” Violet believes that clowning is indeed serious business, albeit funny at the same time. She is deliberately silly so kids can feel

superior, while she expresses she doesn’t know her colors, the correct words to songs, etc. She loves sharing hugs at the Veterans Home and her high spirits and cheerful smile certainly brightens up their lives. She happily plays with folks with dementia or anyone with a disability and feels like she gets more than she gives at these special interactions. Aim the GPS to Route 66 (or Santa Monica Blvd.) and the bulls-eye for the County of Los Angeles to discover a freeway-less, stress-free zone where you can eat, sleep and entertain yourself under one roof – or even on top at one of the numerous rooftop pools – and where you can park the vehicle then let your feet or bike take over. The fact is, when you set foot in West Hollywood, the sky is the limit!   First and foremost, do not equate West Hollywood, a.k.a., WeHo, with Hollywood, which represents just one square on a checkerboard of neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles. WeHo is its own distinct city established in1984. Not to worry. When in WeHo and in need of a Hollywood fix just locate a well-positioned rooftop where, if you look real hard, you can see the iconic Hollywood sign.   “We’re kind of a little bubble with a Mayberry town feel void of any big box stores or many corporate influences but rather with small hardware stores, small restaurants and a whole different thought process about how we live life,” explains Michael “Mikey” Consbruck, a 17-year WeHo resident and founder of V West Hollywood, a wine room housed in a space that was originally Charlie Chaplin’s actor’s studio and then a library (1929-41), but today acts as the neighborhood “Cheers” gathering room for guests to enjoy a glass (or two) from any of over 100 boutique wines representing most every California wine region. “WeHo likes to refer to itself as the ‘Creative City’ and being more community-minded than Hollywood, so you’re going to find things here such as food and wine festivals, book fairs or the annual pride festival.”   WeHo, sandwiched between Hollywood and Beverly Hills and where Marilyn Monroe

As lively is the entertainment culture is, WeHo’s menu of eateries is plentiful and internationally diversified to satisfy taste buds and pocketbooks for all gastronomes.   Hungering for some down-home casual fare? Grab a table at Barney’s Beanery, the original (1920) of six L.A. locations, and listen to the walls sing at what used to be The Doors’ and so many other illustrious singer’s hangout. Want to step up the dining experience a few notches? At Melrose and La Cienega in the heart of the design district foodies are craving to reserve a spot at one of WeHo’s, if not L.A.’s, hottest combo rooftop bar (try one of the boozy boba drinks) and restaurants, E.P. & L.P., serving dishes with Chinese, Fijian and Vietnamese influences. And for what famed chef Ricardo Zarate calls the “next phase of Peruvian dining,” Rosaliné is the place to treat your palate to ceviche, seafood and meat dishes alongside ‘streetfood’ fare with a taste of California cuisine.   The compactness of WeHo makes it a breeze to walk off the calories, whether continuing onto your fave honkytonk watering hole or it’s time to start singing the lullaby tune. If the latter,

ALL ABOARD Join Me for Two Delicious Days Across the Stunning Canadian Rockies Aboard Rocky Mountaineer  BY DYNIE SANDERSON, “NapaFoodGal”

raveling across the Canadian Rockies from Vancouver to Banff is a breathtaking site to behold with brilliant terrain changes and blanketed snowcapped rocky peaks all along the way, and of course an expansive variety wildlife viewing along the way. The drive there is certainly spectacular, however, imagine if you left the driving to the train conductor and food preparation to a skilled French chef and his team, and you could just sit back in comfy recliner seats with a clear dome above your head to view the majesty of the Canadian Rockies every minute of the journey What a journey it would be and what a memorable journey it truly is. And for foodies, it makes it all the more special!!    This past year, I had the opportunity to join in on this renowned train excursion aboard Rocky Mountaineer’s “First Passage to the West” route, one of four routes which starts from the Rocky Mountaineer exclusive state-of-the-art train station just outside Vancouver. We were welcomed by the entire crew to piano music and an introduction to our rail journey by the conductor and the team, followed by an 72

The Rocky Mountaineer Welcome to Breakfast: Welcome to the GoldLeaf Service dining room. From the Coastal Waters of BC to the wide pastures of the prairies, the breakfast you are about to enjoy is a culinary tour of Canada. As you enjoy your meal, please look up and take in the beauty of your First Passage to the West journey. We promise, no one will take your plate away. Cheers, RM inviting Bagpipe serenade. Upon boarding these beautifully appointed train cars we were immediately immersed into two full days of luxury rail travel through Canada’s West and on through the impressive Canadian Rockies with an evening stay in Kamloops, ending up after our 2nd day of the sojourn in breathtaking Banff and Lake Louise.    Our voyage aboard the Rocky Mountaineer, which is the only passenger rail service on this historic route passes through lush Fraser Valley, spiraling tunnels, seven mountain ranges and a pass by Craigellachie, which is the spot where the last spike on the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven. From the outdoor viewing platform and the unparalleled panoramic views from out seats, we all had the opportunity to our set eyes on a large grizzly bear fishing for dinner along the river right next to the train tracks and the grand Eagle’s nest perched high upon one of the train towers passing by. A true highlight!   There isn’t a moment you aren’t in complete awe of the ever-changing vistas constantly emerging all along this spectacular historic route. Sit back relax, indulge and let yourself be ultimately pampered in first-class style by the topnotch team aboard Rocky Mountaineer whose sole mission is to do nothing more than to provide you with the best experience and service possible. Our group

traveling was seated in Gold Leaf Service, one of two classes of services offered, though you can’t go wrong with either as both are exquisite. As they say – you choose from “Perfect” & “More Perfect”.   The Rocky Mountaineer experience is like taking the National Geographic Channel and melding it with the Food Channel giving you a delicious blend of spectacular photographic nature vistas along with amazing Five-Star Dining spiced with a flare of the luxury of the Orient Express. It doesn’t get much better than this.    As a part of our daily journey, we started the day’s excursion with a refreshing “Welcome Aboard” toast along with introductions of the crew and beautiful descriptions of our upcoming experiences for the day. In addition, to add to the exhilarations of the exploration, we were enticed by the food offerings for the day’s journey. We knew right then, we would certainly not go hungry or thirsty either.    For dining, there were two seating’s each day for breakfast and lunch. We had the first seating on day one in the beautifully appointed plush dining car booths along the along the expansive picture windows overlooking the beauty of Western Canada as we cruised along, noshed and talked about the amazing day to come. When we

were seated in the second seating the next day, we certainly didn’t get peckish, as we nibbled on freshly baked scones with fresh berries, hot out of the trains’ on-board ovens to keep us going to our breakfast seating.   The Rocky Mountaineer cuisine is orchestrated under the helm of their award-winning Executive Chef Jean Pierre Guerin and his talented culinary team in the galley aboard the train. There are several galleys on board for both the Gold Leaf and Silver Leaf services. Jean Pierre is absolutely charming and is not shy about spending time chatting it up with the guests on board, except when he is hands on at the helm of orchestrating the daily culinary presentations. He has been with the Rocky Mountaineer for over ten years and is known for his talents creating mouthwatering fusion cuisine. During his impressive career as a wellknown chef, he has created meals for Princess Diana, Meryl Streep and former President Clinton.   Chef Guerin explained, “Cooking on board is not difficult, however we have to take everything, including the kitchen sink. We don’t have the luxury of stopping for anything. We have to take 2-3 days of supplies. And when I say supplies that’s not just the food but the expertise – the chefs have to travel with us. Everything has to be super well organized aboard the train. You have to know where everything is. Each season we do a brand-new menu depending on fresh seasonal offerings”.   Breakfast always begins with coffee, juice and Chef’s seasonal fruit creation with a freshly baked treat. The delightful menu includes their ever popular and absolutely delicious Eggs Benedict with two poached eggs and Montreal style smoked beef on a toasted English Muffin, SPRING 2018

73

NVL travel topped with tarragon hollandaise. I’d go back just for that!!    Another breakfast treat was the Spinach, Feta and Egg Soufflé with roasted Yukon Gold potatoes, and smoked farmers sausages. The Blueberry Pancakes were out of this world with traditional Canadian Maple syrup. Then of course there is the Smoked Salmon Scramble – a scene stealer with roasted Yukon Gold Potatoes, crème fraiche, smoked salmon and a crispy tortilla. So many lovely choices. And that is just to name a few of the delicious delights on the morning menu. Be sure to save room for lunch…    There is always a mid-morning munch in between breakfast and lunch along with a selection of hot and cold beverages, perhaps a mimosa is on your agenda or try out one of their “Caesars” – a traditional Canadian version of the Bloody Mary.    For lunch, we headed back down from our domed vista car to the dining room where it was beautifully set in white linen adorned with decorative flower arrangements. The aromas floating out of the galley kitchen sent a mouthwatering invitation to yet another amazing meal created by Chef Jean Pierre Guerin.   Being a Napa Valley Foodie and Wine Lover, the luncheon presentation yet again did not disappoint! Their wine selections offered varietals from the Okanagan wine region in British Columbia and were delightfully paired to perfection with the afternoons luncheon selections.

Chef Jean Pierre and Crew

Any Napa Valley wine enthusiast would certainly concur.   They were pouring two varietals from Sumac Ridge Estate from their Vineyard Collection, an unoaked Chardonnay and a Merlot. Also from Jackson-Triggs Reserve Selection, we were offered a lovely Sauvignon Blanc and a luscious Cabernet Sauvignon.   Lunch began with a Forest-Fresh Mushroom soup, followed by a Baked Cherry Tomato Salad. The “Alberta Short Ribs” is a popular favorite on the lunch menu. The Smokey Mushroom Burger made with AAA Alberta beef on the pretzel roll is another popular item on the menu. There are 6 delightful entrees to choose from each day. And lunch is always followed up with a delightful dessert. The Decadent Dark Chocolate Pistachio Brownie is absolutely heavenly.   For 2018, there is something new on the Rocky Mountaineer travel menu which is a 10-day package for foodies, The First Passage to the West Culinary Exploration. You will feast on wine-paired gourmet meals everyday while touring Rocky Mountain Peaks. There is even a Panoramic Helicopter Flightseeing excursion. Rocky Mountaineer offers something for everyone from 2 days to 10 days.

YOUR WEALTH - The Good and Bad News of Living Longer  BY RICH JACOBSON

O

ne of my favorite parables about life is the story of the Chinese farmer who gets a horse, which soon runs away. The neighbors say “Oh, that's bad news." The farmer replies, "Good news, bad news, who can say?". The horse eventually comes back and brings another horse with it. The neighbors return and say “That’s good news!” The farmer again says, "Good news, bad news, who can say?". The farmer gives the second horse to his son, who rides it, then is thrown and badly breaks his leg. "Oh, such bad news!" the neighbors tell him. "Good news, bad news, who can say?" the farmer replies, once more. In a week’s time, the emperor's men come and take every able-bodied young man to fight in a war. The farmer's son is spared. Good news, right?    I especially like this parable in connection with the news that we are all living longer than ever before. In 1990, a 65-year-old woman could expect to live, on average, 19.1 years longer. In 2016, that figure rose to 20.7 years and by 2090 that figure is expected to rise to 24.5 years. Men, on average, have lifespans 76

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

about 2.5 years shorter than their female counterparts. These longer life spans are transforming our concept about the golden years and retirement. For example, today, people are more likely to leave a long-term marriage than remain unhappy for another 20 or 30 years- a phenomenon called “Grey Divorce”. This is a direct result of increasing longevity. Similarly, people are choosing to work longer, take up a new career or make dramatic changes in lifestyle, knowing that there still may be plenty of years yet to come. This is all good news.   There’s another angle to living longer that may not be such good news, however. The Medicare and Social Security programs are under enormous strain as more retirees draw on these “entitlement programs” for longer periods of time. Unless something is done very soon, both these programs will run out of funds and will be unable to pay out benefits at current levels. Yet, another problem is how longer lifespans affect retirement planning. A 65 years old man today has a 43% chance of living another 20 years and a 22% chance of living 25 more years. So, until what age should they be

planning for money to last? Most financial planners would say you want to have at least a 95% probability that your money will last as long as you do. Since there is a 7% chance a 65-year-old man will live to age 95 and a 1% chance of him living to age 100, I would suggest that age 95 is the minimum age for planning how long assets must last. Keep in mind, too, lifespans are going up and we are likely to see many more people living to 100 in the future.    All of this has huge implications for a wide variety of critical financial decisions; when to claim social security, how much you need to save for retirement, what percent is a safe withdrawal rate from a portfolio, how your portfolio needs to be invested in retirement, and the amount of money that will be needed for health care costs. There may be nothing more important to your wellbeing than understanding how living longer affects your finances and having a plan for the future.
