Metro Cinema has been talking to you - our friends, audiences, and neighbours and you’ve inspired us to embrace change to become the best Metro we can be. What does that mean? While we continue offering the most engaging, entertaining, and welcoming cinema experiences possible, we’re also trying out a few new things, like adopting a more adaptable programming philosophy. That means we’ll be able to better accommodate last minute special events that deserve commemoration. But it’s our new releases where you’ll see the biggest shifts. The scheduled runs for new releases will be more flexible so that we can hold over the movies that resonate most with our audiences. Metro Cinema online at metrocinema.org and our social media will be the hub for the latest programming and screening schedules, but our trusty program guide is still your resource for selected new releases, curated series and repertory screenings, and special events. It shouldn’t take too long to get use to the second big change, since it will happen every week. Beginning June 1, Mondays at Metro Cinema are no longer just Mondays, they’re Five Buck Mondays! All admissions to Metro programmed Monday screenings are now $5! Just in case you missed something in the last couple of months, here’s an update on some of the not-brand-new-but-recent goings on at Metro. We’ve established a Film Club - TGIF: Thank Garneau It’s Film. It meets on select Friday nights when a new release opens in our 7PM time slot. Make sure to stay tuned to metrocinema.org to see when the next TGIF is scheduled! And, of course, there’s always our stunning array of unique programming to look forward to. In May we’re launching into a whole 12 days of provocative and entertaining documentary films during the 2015 Global Visions Festival. In partnership with Edmonton’s Pride Festival, we’re featuring Pride-themed programming throughout International Pride Month in June. Keep your eyes peeled for the PRIDE label throughout this guide. And all through May and June, we’ve got a pawful of pet-related programming, so look for the MEOW! and BARK! labels throughout the program. And for the icing on our springtime cake, we’re showcasing the work of two master filmmakers with a Salute to Albert Maysles and Wim’s Wunders: The Films of Wim Wenders. See you soon!
Metro Cinema is a community-based non-profit society. We believe that film, video, and digital media are significant art forms and means of communication, and that many innovative films, videos, and digital media are overlooked by conventional theatres, including Canadian, international, and independent film, video, and digital media. We are devoted to the exhibition and promotion of this work in Edmonton. To this end, Metro exhibits an eclectic blend of film, video, and digital media that are not screened anywhere else in the city. Metro’s focus is on presenting a broad selection of educational, cultural, and innovative works. The Society operates with the ongoing assistance of a large volunteer base. We regularly distribute a program, facilitate discussion, and bring in artists to enhance the experience and understanding of film, video, and digital media. Metro Cinema is grateful for the support of these funders
Metro is also grateful for the support of the following: Alberta Media Arts Alliance, CJSR, The Tomato, and VUE Weekly

The Case Against 8 explores the issue of same-sex marriage rights through one Californian couple’s landmark legal battle for federal Marriage Equality.
A C O N V E R S AT I O N A B O U T P R I D E
Metro: How would you describe the origins of lGBTQ cinema?
Metro: Given your particular knowledge of documentary films, how would you contrast lGBTQ documentaries to narrative films?
Guy: Back in the late ‘60’s there was a tidal wave of change in mainstream cinema; the counter-culture was taking over, and ‘auteur’ filmmakers were spreading a newfound message of freedom with new, taboo-defying forms of expression. In 1970, William Friedkin produced a filmed version of the play The Boys in the Band, but despite its relative success, the major studios were still reluctant to jump into the fray. It was 1978’s la Cage Aux Folles, a French arthouse smash that for the first time brought both gay and straight audiences out to the cinema in equal measure. And when Tom Hanks became the first major star to not only play, but win an oscar for his role as a gay character in Philadelphia (1993), the tides really turned. Today, it’s not even a question 6
metrocinema.org
Metro: Do you see any trends in depictions of lGBTQ themes in mainstream cinema? Guy: until the 90’s, many lGBTQ characters in mainstream films were either ‘comic’ relief, like in Boat Trip, or serial killers, like in Silence of the lambs. That’s changed particularly in the last 5 to 10 years, with most ‘teen’ movies for example now featuring at least one gay character – presented so nonchalantly that it’s hard to remember it would once have been a big deal.
Guy: Documentary has been at the forefront of bringing a variety of lGBTQ issues to mainstream audiences. At Global Visions, we’re proud of our commitment to programming quality lGBTQ content each year, including some of this year’s selections like Tab Hunter Confidential, and the absolutely incredible Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine. Metro: What considerations affect your selection of documentaries with lGBTQ themes and subjects? Guy: It boils down to the same criteria we use for every other film that gets programmed into the festival: it has to tell an involving story, with captivating characters, covering a subject
matter you ‘thought’ you knew about – but after watching, you realize you only knew a small part of the story. It has to engage, enrage, entertain, enlighten – basically, it has to be a film that people want to talk about long after the end credits have rolled and the house lights have come on. Whether it’s “gay or straight” doesn’t matter, it just has to be good. --GL

More than a fashion film, it is a story about creativity and inspiration. Salute to Albert Maysles - Series & Repertory. MAY 29 @ 7PM: Metro Cinema’s TGIF

With the exception of rebellious Lili, every human seems an obstacle to Hagen and the other discarded mongrels with whom he allies in a bid for survival. crime watch
A monthly celebration of aesthetically challenged films, hosted by Dave Clarke and featuring live comedic commentary.
From thriller to comedy and classic to contemporary, Crime Watch offers a diverse and provocative glimpse into the cinematic criminal world. Curated by Laura O’Connor and Sam Sheplawy.
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier The Blue Lagoon USA 1989, 107 min, Dir: William Shatner MAY 6 @ 7PM
Trekkies believe even-numbered Star Trek films are way better than odd-numbered ones. We at Turkey Shoot aren’t mathematicians, but know a doozie when we see one. William (Captain Kirk) Shatner co-writes, directs, and stars in this Enterprise, apparently inspired by televangelists and featuring Shatner signatures: broad humour, running, jumping, and rolling on the ground. The original crew return, looking totally baffled. With live comedic commentary from Dave Clarke and some sad Trekkies.
USA 1980, 104 min, Dir: Randal Kleiser JUN 9 @ 7PM
It’s the third film version of a 1908 novel, so how bad can it be? Billed as “a sensual story of natural love,” this squinky romantic adventure from the director of Grease features Brooke Shields as Emmeline Lestrange, who sounds like she belongs at Hogwarts, not stranded on an island with Christopher Atkins, her long tresses superglued to her breasts. If you want a hopelessly idealized story with giant copulating turtles, look no further. Featuring live comedic commentary from Dave Clarke and a guest Herpetologist.

White God (Fehér isten)
The Pink Panther USA 1963, 115 min, DIr: Blake Edwards, English/Italian MAY 19 @ 7PM
A brilliant pink diamond with a flaw in the shape of a leaping panther. Its theft is a cinematic tradition that spans several films and a cartoon series, but it all began with the original. How far will the awkward Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers) go to capture a thief? To what ridiculous depths will that thief descend to capture a priceless gem? How far will a woman go to aid her husband inspector’s arch-nemesis? You’ll find those answers here with a weird combination of James Bond sultriness and keystone cops comedy. Meanwhile, Henry Mancini’s score, with that unmistakable theme, makes this a true crime classic. (Cinemablend) MEOW!

Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films Roar DEDfest Docs Australia/USA/Israel/UK 2014, 107 min, Dir: Mark Hartley MAY 15 @ 10PM
The meteoric rise and ignominious demise of 1980s schlock juggernaut, Cannon Films, is captured in this anecdotal tale of the late Menahem Golan and his cousin, Yoram Globus. Archival footage, film clips, more than 80 talking heads, and a film-by-film case study of Cannon’s highs and lows reveal Cannon’s legacy. Look for Cannon luminaries, like an up-and-coming kickboxing champ named Jean-Claude Van Damme. Golan and Globus may have had questionable taste and even more questionable business ethics, but they loved movies. (Scott Foundas, Variety) Co-presented with Global Visions Festival. USA 1981, 102 min, Dir: Noel Marshall JUN 12 @ MIDNIGHT
An unprecedented action adventure, Roar follows wildlife preservationist Hank (Noel Marshall), who lives alongside over 100 untamed animals on an African preservation. When his wife and children arrive (real-life wife Tippi Hedren and step-daughter Melanie Griffith), a battle for dominance between the lions threatens their lives. The film was inspired by the stars’ real life dedication to the welfare of large cats, but the results were utterly insane. No animals were harmed during filming, but 70 members of the cast and crew were. MEOW! 18+ Event. No Minors. Bound USA 1996, 108 min, Dir: Andy Wachowski & Lana Wachowski (as the Wachowski Brothers) JUN 16 @ 7PM
The first film co-directed by the Wachowski Brothers tells a noir story filled with sex and violence. Corky is a cool ex-con and apartment-building cleaner meets Violet, the quick-witted moll of a Mob money launderer. Violet falls for Corky, Corky falls for Violet, and the two women hatch a plan to swipe two million Mafia bucks - provided they can trust each other. Creating a caper that features (a) Coen brothers-style gore; (b) Scorsese-style Mob double-crossings; (c) Candida Royalestyle erotica; and (d) Joe Eszterhas-style lesbians, Bound has the genre bases covered. Have you ever wondered what your favourite cinema’s fine staff watch when they’re not at work? From the front of house to behind the scenes, each month one Metro staff member will present their must see film!
Fritz the Cat USA 1972, 78 min, Dir: Ralph Bakshi, English/Yiddish MAY 20 @ 9PM
Join Metro Bizarro for a classic of both underground filmmaking and animation. Based on Robert Crumb’s eponymous comic, Fritz is one of the most daring films of the 70s. It is the first animated film to ever receive an X-rating and helped secure Bakshi’s (Heavy Traffic, American Pop) fame. Though notoriously disliked by Crumb (so much so he later killed the character), Fritz helped bring the underground to the mainstream and definitively proved cartoons were art and not just kids’ stuff. The Raspberry Reich Germany/Canada 2004, 90 min, Dir: Bruce LaBruce, English/German w/ Subtitles JUN 17 @ 9:30PM
Metro Bizarro celebrates Pride with provocateur and enfant terrible, Bruce LaBruce, one of Canada’s premier directors. Mixing art and pornography in high form, The Raspberry Reich (also available in more explicit form as The Revolution Is My Boyfriend) is a brutal satire of terrorist chic that follows a young group of leftist radicals as they plan the kidnapping of a rich banker’s son. The leader of their ranks forces them to rethink their heterosexuality and join the homosexual intifada. Ulrike’s Brain, the sequel to Raspberry is set to come out later this year. PRIDE

Wings of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin)
West Germany/France 1987, 128 min, Dir: Wim Wenders, German/English/ French/ Turkish/Hebrew/Spanish/Japanese w/ Subtitles MAY 21 @ 7PM
In this humanist love story, a history of mankind is told by the angels among us who witness our lives, hear our inner thoughts, and observe, but never intervene with the course of events. Among the mortals we meet Peter Falk (in a wonderful performance as himself) and a beautiful trapeze artist. When one of the angels, Damiel, falls in love, he enters the mortal realm. Filmed during the 1980’s, the cityscape of Berlin is set against a haunting soundtrack featuring Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Crime and the City Solution. Caitlin is one of Metro Cinema’s House Managers. She also works at a gallery and as a gardener. Wings of Desire is one of the first films she recalls that motivated her to study painting in art school. With a short animation to music by The Olm, a violin and viola drone duo. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid USA 1969, 110 min, Dir: George Roy Hill JUN 21 @ 4PM Based loosely on the exploits of American Wild West characters Robert LeRoy Parker (Butch Cassidy) and Harry Longabaugh (The Sundance Kid), Hill’s seminal buddy Western follows the pair as regular run-ins with the law compel them to flee southward in an attempt to discover a paradise with plentiful work and less harassment. When he’s not working as a Front of House Representative at Metro, David studies music. “I’ve always found this to be a unique and especially romantic Western. I’ve been drawn to it again and again, and I’m very excited to see it on the big screen.” Father’s Day Weekend - Special Screenings & Events

Salute to Albert Maysles
A monthly series of eccentric classics curated by Jeff Noel.
Metro Cinema honours the art and career of Albert Maysles (d. March 5, 2015), whose groundbreaking films mine the psychology of the human condition, and with his brother David Maysles (d. 1987), helped pioneer featurelength non-fiction filmmaking. Here are some of the highlights of an oeuvre spanning the gamut of subject matter, from high art to pop culture and celebrities to nobodies, all with the same probing curiosity and eminent humanity.
The Peanut Butter Solution Canada 1985, 94 min, Dir: Michael Rubbo, French/English w/ Subtitles, 35mm MAY 26 @ 9:15PM
In this classic from Montreal’s Les productions la fête, the “Disney of the North,” we meet Mike whose hair, after falling out from fright, is growing out of control, the result of a peanut butter hair-growing paste given to him by the ghosts of an elderly homeless couple. Just when the weirdness seems to have peaked, Mike disappears during a rash of child kidnappings, for which strange paintbrushes are the only clues. This is a surreal Seussian adventure you won’t want to miss.
Cool Hand Luke USA 1967, 126 min, Dir: Stuart Rosenberg JUN 23 @ 9:30PM Paul Newman stars as Lucas Jackson, a petty criminal on a chain gang in a small Southern town. A rebel with more guts than good sense, he gains the respect of his fellow inmates with his repeated escape attempts and his fearless approach to beatings, bets, and dares. But even “Cool Hand Luke” has his limits. (TCM)

Gimme Shelter USA 1970, 91 min, Dirs: Albert Maysles, David Maysles, & Charlotte Zwerin JUN 2 @ 9:30PM
Albert and David Maysles were proponents of the Direct Cinema movement of the 50’s and 60s, in which “reactive” filmmakers record events as they unfold naturally and spontaneously. Gimme Shelter, the Maysles’ landmark music documentary, defines spontaneity, revealing the conflicts and contradictions within the counterculture era through the tragically ill-fated Rolling Stones free concert at Altamont Speedway on December 6, 1969. Only four months earlier, Woodstock defined the Love Generation; now it lay in ruins on a desolate racetrack six miles outside of San Francisco. Jun 2 Wim’s Wunders & Salute to Albert Maysles Double Feature: Buena Vista Social Club @ 7PM & Gimme Shelter @ 9:30PM Adults: $20, Students/Seniors/Children: $15 Advance Double Feature Tickets are available in person at Metro’s box office.

Grey Gardens USA 1975, 100 min, Dirs: Ellen Hovde, Albert Maysles, David Maysles, & Muffie Meyer JUN 6 @ 7PM, 7 @ 2PM, 9 @ 9:15PM
During the fall of 1973 the Maysles spent some six weeks in East Hampton with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ aunt and cousin, Big Edie and Little Edie Beale, an elderly mother and her unmarried daughter living by the sea in a crumbling house filled with the cluttered memories of the their privileged past. This unscripted slice of life is simultaneously heartwarming, tragic, and bizarre. Initially met with accusations of voyeurism, Grey Gardens has since been ranked among the International Documentary Association’s (IDA) top documentaries of all time.

METrO MIX TAPE In the beginning, there was analogue. long before youtube and iEverything took playlists mainstream, VHS and Betamax reigned. Those magical spools of magnetic tape were the canvases on which video mix masters crafted their compilations of rare and random, odd and wonderful video footage, carefully selected and curated for maximum brain bending, eye melting effect. There were no rules. Sources ranged wildly from security cams and home movies, to ancient PSAs and strange commercials. Often bizarre, sometimes shocking, and hysterical more often than not - the results were marvellously idiosyncratic. now that the world’s gone digital, the Video Mix Tape may seem all but lost, relegated to the limbo of obsolete technology alongside laser discs and Walkmen. But fear not, Metro’s bringing back the Mix Tape in all its glory!

you don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy the Edmonton Jewish Film Festival (EJFF), an initiative of the Jewish Federation of Edmonton that has been in operation for almost 25 years. Metro Cinema and EJFF presents a special Pride Month screening. A perky group of young Israelis are the underdogs in an international singing contest in this kitschy, technicolor, musical comedy. To escape daily stresses, the Tel Aviv neighbours congregate to watch universong, a spoof of the televised Eurovision song contests of the 1970s. When the group spontaneously submits its own cheesy tune, they’re surprised when they’re chosen to represent Israel in the Paris finals. Facing creative pressures from the comically inept Israel Broadcasting Authority, the group is forced to choose between friendship and fame.
