Jeremy Dutcher March 3, 2019 Genre: Aboriginal
Performer, composer, activist, musicologist — these roles are all infused into Jeremy Dutcher’s art and way of life. His music, too, transcends boundaries: unapologetically playful in its incorporation of classical influences, full of reverence for the traditional songs of his home and teeming with the urgency of modern-day struggles of resistance. A member of Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick, Jeremy first did music studies in Halifax before taking a chance to work in the archives at the Canadian Museum of History, painstakingly transcribing Wolastoq songs from 1907 wax cylinders. As he listened to each recording, he felt his own musical impulses stirring from deep within. Long days at the archives turned into long nights at the piano, feeling out melodies and phrases, deep in dialogue with the voices of his ancestors. His “collaborative” compositions on his new album, Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, are like nothing you’ve ever heard. Delicate, sublime vocal melodies ring out atop piano lines that cascade through a vibrant range of emotions.

Julie Fowlis October 18, 2018 Genre: Celtic
When the filmmakers at Pixar/Disney needed a singer for the soundtrack to their animated movie, Brave, set in medieval Scotland, they turned to Julie Fowlis, a Scottish folk singer who enjoyed a surprise hit in the UK a few years back with her beautiful Gaelic-language version of the Beatles song, "Blackbird." "There's a sort of mysticism about the Gaelic language," says Roddy Hart, a DJ on BBC Radio Scotland, noting that Fowlis' traditional music "fed brilliantly" into Pixar's vision for Brave. But Hart hastens to add, "There's nothing calculated about what Julie does. It's honest and it's true." Born in 1979, Fowlis was raised on the island of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, about as far north as one get can and still be in Scotland. It is a Gaelic-speaking region (or, Gallic, as they say in Scotland), part of the "Celtic arc" that includes coastal communities in Spain, France, Ireland, Scotland and Norway. Fowlis now lives with her family in the Scottish Highlands, but when she returns by ferry to her misty homeland she says she can feel her heartbeat slow down and her spirits lift. Scottish Gallic is spoken by a mere 60,000 people, but Fowlis has devoted her life to reviving the language and sustaining Scotland's Celtic culture. In a band with her Irish-born husband, Eamonn Doorley, she performs most of her songs in Gaelic and has championed the language and culture in her official role as Scotland's Gaelic ambassador to the world. "‌There's just something about these songs," she says. "There's a great honesty in them, I think, and they're all traditional material. They're kind of messages and songs that have been sung for hundreds of years, and they have a resonance that's as valid now as perhaps it was maybe 500 years ago." - PBS 06

Our story begins with Nick Reynolds who, along with Bob Shane and Dave Guard, founded this iconic San Francisco folk group in 1955. Through talent and tenacity they rose to become the undisputed kings of the acoustic musical genre that exploded onto the American scene. From the late '50's through the early '60's they dominated the creation and artistic exploration of folk music. Indeed, in 1958 the Kingston Trio took home the first Grammy ever awarded to a country group. One year later, they were honoured with a second Grammy, this time as a folk group. In truth, they never classified themselves as either, but more as a musical and vocal group that performed a variety of styles. Audiences worldwide agreed. Recently, the Kingston Trio received the "Grand Grammy" of Grammys--The Lifetime Achievement Award. Reserved for those select few who have attained spectacular success in the music business over an extended career, this honour places the Trio among the heady pantheon of names like Frank Sinatra, Charlie Parker and The Beatles. It's no exaggeration to say these three guys redefined the landscape of popular music in America and eventually the world, creating a demand for folk where none had existed before. Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard literally morphed into a cultural phenomenon. With their signature striped shirts, banjos, bongos, guitars and 08

charismatic personalities, they became the most outstanding singing and recording act of their time.
*Consider: they set a debut album sales record that remained unbeaten for five decades until a young woman came along named Beyonce.* Following in their footsteps are Josh Reynolds, the son of original member Nick Reynolds, Mike Marvin, Josh’s cousin and Tim Gorelangton, Josh & Mike's lifetime friend. Today they have emerged on to the folk music scene as The Kingston Trio 3.0. No mere tribute band but a true musical heritage continued. Within this new group thrives the lively joy of music performance and infectious humour that won over audiences throughout the world. A Trio concert was one of the all-time great live show experiences, and these three disciples are following in their very large footsteps. If you were lucky enough to have seen or heard the original Kingston Trio in the 1950’s and ‘60's, come now and experience some classic moments of Déjà-vu that you'll always treasure. Or, if you were never able--or just not around--to see what all the commotion was about back then, here's your chance to come experience a handclapping, sing-along, modern day version of the Kingston Trio sensation in person. 099

Once Upon A Frost: A New Musical January 11-17, 2019 Genre: Special Event
Book, Music and Lyrics: Michael Clark Associate Director: Mhairi Berg Music Director: Keat Machtemes Choreographer: Barbara Vargas Once upon a time in a place not too different from your own, the most peculiar season came to pass. For you see on this year, when the time arrived for the first frost of winter, none came. This brand new musical follows the heartwarming story of Elly, a shop owner who has a brush with the well-known character Jack Frost. When Jack visits Elly’s shop he loses his power to bring winter. To get it back, the only option is to work with Elly to save her shop from permanently closing. With loveable characters and catchy music, you will be left entranced by the magic of theatre.

I want to show people that magic exists in real life, and I can do that in the theatre. For the last five years I have had the privilege of directing the music for the annual musical at Festival Place. I have worked with a fantastic team to help build experiences in the theatre for cast, crew, musicians and audience alike. As Music Director I have coached vocals, played piano in rehearsal and conducted the orchestra for every performance. This year I am proud to be involved in celebrating musical theatre in Sherwood Park by creating a new story for the stage. Every new musical begins as a compelling story, and Once Upon A Frost is no exception. Beautiful music and the development of engaging characters truly make a story come to life. I began composing the music at the Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity one year ago where it was previewed in concert. Since that time the show has gone through many different iterations until the first draft of the complete show was workshopped here at Festival Place with a cast of some of the most talented performers from Sherwood Park. The production of a new musical is the pinnacle of technical and artistic ability for a theatre. It reaches beyond expectation, and engages everyone involved in the most creative way. There is no template or presumption; everything is conceived from scratch. Once Upon A Frost is a full production with set, lights, costumes, and orchestra and features a brand new story with brand new songs. You do not have to use your imagination. You do not have to suspend your disbelief. This is magic in real life. This is musical theatre.

Le Vent du Nord and De Temps Antan in QuebecFest January 25, 2019 • Genre: Folk
Long joined in both blood and spirit, Le Vent du Nord and De Temps Antan now combine forces in an exciting tribute to Québec’s musical revival. As charter members of an elite Québecois fraternity — two members of each band have a brother in the other — each group has carved its own distinct path to prominence. Now they combine their considerable talents in an artful integrated program of original and traditional music celebrating Québec’s vibrant Francophone culture. Le Vent du Nord
De Temps Antan
Featuring button accordion, guitar and fiddle, the band’s sound is defined by the hurdy- gurdy, which adds an earthy, rough-hewn flavor to even the most buoyant dance tunes.” — Boston Herald
Using Quebec’s vibrant living music tradition as a springboard for musical innovation De Temps Antan forms a power trio catapulting audiences headlong into the future French-Canadian music and culture. Since the band’s founding in 2003, Éric Beaudry, André Brunet and Pierre-Luc Dupuis have been exploring and performing time-honored songs and melodies been fine-tuned and adapted to the needs of each generation. Using fiddle, accordion, harmonica, guitar, bouzouki and foot percussion (among a number of other instruments) these three virtuosos blend boundless energy with the infectious ‘joie de vivre.’
Since its inception in August 2002, Le Vent du Nord has enjoyed meteoric success, receiving several prestigious awards including a JUNO. The band is now one of the most-loved Quebec folk groups touring the world. The group’s current line-up consists of singers / multi-instrumentalists Nicolas Boulerice, Simon Beaudry, Olivier Demers, and Réjean Brunet. The band’s repertoire includes both traditional and original material. On stage these four friends deliver masterful live performances that will move any crowd. 14

Drum legend Terry Bozzio is known for his work with Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, Korn, UK, Missing Persons, Mick Jagger, Robbie Robertson, Alan Holdsworth, Tony Levin, Steve Vai, Quincy Jones, Ken Scott, Metropole Orkest - as well as Film score composers Basil Poledouris, Mark Isham & Patrick O'Hearn. (See more at www.terrybozzio.com) Unless you have seen Terry, you have no idea what you are in for. Bozzio is an enigmatic, evocative, and engaging musician whose instrument just happens to be the drums. Terry Bozzio is able to accompany himself with bass note patterns and, at the same time, melodically solo with highly developed coordination skills to express a "complete musical statement" on the drum set alone. Drawing from jazz, classical, & ethnic percussion styles from around the world, Terry Bozzio is "a storyteller," able to weave a hypnotic spell over audiences and enthrall them with an eclectic experience filled with emotion, contrast, variety, intimacy, excitement, & passion. His is a unique, intense, dynamic, spiritualistic, melodic, orchestral, atmospheric, and musical performance on the largest tuned drum & percussion set in the world. Please note that this is not a bombastic 2 hour drum solo. This is MUSIC on drums. There is space, classical forms & structures, ambient electronic loops, and atmospheric percussion effects, as well as some exciting & fiery drumming that brings audiences to their feet! He has spent the last 30 years performing solo drum music for sold out audiences all around the world, from India to Japan, from Europe to North America. - Broadway World 18
