Metro Cinema is a community-based non-profit society. We believe that film, video, and digital media are significant art forms and means of communication, and that many innovative films, videos, and digital media are overlooked by conventional theatres, including Canadian, international, and independent film, video, and digital media. We are devoted to the exhibition and promotion of this work in Edmonton. To this end, Metro exhibits an eclectic blend of film, video, and digital media that are not screened anywhere else in the city. Metro’s focus is on presenting a broad selection of educational, cultural, and innovative works. The Society operates with the ongoing assistance of a large volunteer base. We regularly distribute a program, facilitate discussion, and bring in artists to enhance the experience and understanding of film, video, and digital media. Metro Cinema is grateful for the support of these funders
Metro is also grateful for the support of the following: Alberta Media Arts Alliance, Capital FM , CJSR, FAVA , The Tomato, VUE Weekly, the Canada 150 Fund, and the Harper-Kennedy Fund at Edmonton Community Foundation

Music Docs Music Docs is a monthly film series featuring music documentaries, from classic to contemporary. Curated by Tim Rechner, and co-presented with CJSR, Blackbyrd Myoozik, and Steamwhistle.
The Beatles: Eight Days A Week – The Touring Years UK/USA 2016, 137 min, Dir: Ron Howard NOV 1 @ 7PM
Beatlemania has already been well-chronicled (to say the least), but they’ve arguably never gotten a definitive, widely available concert documentary. And Ron Howard told Rolling Stone in 2014 that his doc will include rare footage of the band, including restored Super 8 video of the Beatles in concert: “We can now sync it up [to audio recordings] and create a concert experience so immersive and so engaging, I believe you’re going to actually feel like you’re somewhere in the sixties, seeing what it was like to be there, feeling it and hearing it. And as a film director, that’s a fantastic challenge.” Live Music TBA. Music at 6:30PM. Film at 7PM.
Blekkmetal Norway 2016, 99 min, Dir: David Hall DEC 6 @ 7PM
Blekkmetal is a documentary about the one-off 2015 festival celebrating the origins of Norweigan black metal. The film features exclusive interviews and footage of Enslaved, Taake, Aeternus, Gehenna, Helheim, Old Funeral, Kampfar, Hades Almighty, and Gaahls Wyrd performing classic and rare songs from their catalog. Following the screening there will be a Q & A with film co-writer, co-producer, & cameraperson (and also U of A professor) Jason Wallin.
Quote-A-Longs
Screens with:
Heavy Metal Parking Lot – 30th Anniversary USA 1986, 17 min, Dir: John Heyn, Jeff Krulik
On May 31, 1986, John Heyn and Jeff Krulik filmed Judas Priest fans in a concert arena parking lot in suburban Maryland. Thirty years later, Heavy Metal Parking Lot is hailed as one of the greatest rock documentaries ever. It’s a definitive cultural touchstone for the 1980s metal scene: spandex, big hair, denim, mullets, muscle cars and beer.
DEDfemme DEDfemme aims to celebrate and promote the unique cinematic visions of women in genre film. Women are sorely undervalued in the filmmaking industry, but more so within the realm of genre. The unfortunate truth is that people don’t often equate great horror, action, sci-fi, western, psychological thriller and quirky comedy with the filmmaking efforts of women, but DEDfemme is here to prove that women are indeed out there, kicking ass and producing some of the most remarkable and offbeat stuff genre cinema has to offer.

Canada 2016, 40 min, Dir: Melisa Brittain NOV 13 @ 3:30PM
The colonial practice of forcibly removing Indigenous children from their families did not end with the closing of Indian residential schools. It continues today in the form of provincial and territorial child welfare systems, which remove Indigenous children and youth at alarmingly high rates. Featuring the voices of Indigenous youth previously involved with child welfare, this film shares their insights into how ongoing settler colonialism impacts their lives, and demonstrates their multiple strategies of resistance to assimilation and state control.
