Metro Cinema is a community-based non-profit society. We believe that film, video, and digital media are significant art forms and means of communication, and that many innovative films, videos, and digital media are overlooked by conventional theatres, including Canadian, international, and independent film, video, and digital media. We are devoted to the exhibition and promotion of this work in Edmonton. To this end, Metro exhibits an eclectic blend of film, video, and digital media that are not screened anywhere else in the city. Metro’s focus is on presenting a broad selection of educational, cultural, and innovative works. The Society operates with the ongoing assistance of a large volunteer base. We regularly distribute a program, facilitate discussion, and bring in artists to enhance the experience and understanding of film, video, and digital media. Metro Cinema is grateful for the support of these funders
Metro is also grateful for the support of the following: Alberta Media Arts Alliance, Capital FM , CJSR, FAVA , The Tomato, and VUE Weekly

Lily Tomlin stars as Elle, a woman who has just gotten through a breakup with her girlfriend when her granddaughter, Sage, unexpectedly shows up needing $600 before sundown. Temporarily broke, Grandma Elle and Sage spend the day trying to get their hands on the cash as their unannounced visits to old friends and flames end up rattling skeletons and digging up secrets.
In 1987, five young men, using brutally honest rhymes and hardcore beats, put their frustration and anger about life in the most dangerous place in America into the most powerful weapon they had - their music. Taking us back to where it all began, Straight Outta Compton tells the true story of how these cultural rebels - armed only with their lyrics, swagger, and raw talent - stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the world’s most dangerous group: N.W.A.

A colourful character who was not only ahead of her time but helped to define it, Peggy Guggenheim was an heiress to her family fortune who became a central figure in the modern art movement. As she moved through the cultural upheaval of the 20th century, she collected not only art, but artists. Her colourful history included figures such as Samuel Beckett, Max Ernst, Jackson Pollock, Alexander Calder, and Marcel Duchamp. While fighting personal tragedy, she maintained her vision to build one of the most important collections of modern art, now enshrined in her Venetian palazzo. 6

While Milgram is trying to come to terms with the Holocaust by testing people’s tendency to comply with authority, he is accused of being a deceptive, manipulative monster. Experimenter aims to show how Milgram’s conscience and creative spirit continue to be resonant, poignant, and inspirational. Throughout his life, H. R. Giger has inhabited the world of the uncanny, a dark universe on the brink of many an abyss. Giger is merely the bearer of dark messages: charting our nightmares, drafting maps of our subconscious, and molding our primal fears. This documentary brings viewers into the life of H. R. Giger, the artist who won an Academy Award for designing the legendary character from Ridley Scott’s Alien. January 25 double feature with Alien @ 7PM (see page 10)
Victoria, a young woman from Madrid, meets four local Berliners outside a nightclub. Sonne and his friends promise to show her a good time, and the real side of the city. But these lads have gotten themselves into hot water: they owe someone a dangerous favor that requires repaying that evening. As Victoria’s flirtation with Sonne deepens into something more, he convinces her to come along for the ride. As the night takes on an ever more menacing quality, what started out as a good time quickly spirals out of control. Victoria is noteworthy for its filming style, with the final cut consisting of a single continuous take.

“Hello, little bonehead. I’ll love you forever.” So begins Heart of a Dog, creative pioneer Laurie Anderson’s wry, wondrous, and unforgettable cinematic journey through love, death, and language. Centering on Anderson’s beloved rat terrier Lolabelle, who died in 2011, Heart of a Dog is a personal essay that weaves together childhood memories, video diaries, philosophical musings on data collection, surveillance culture and the Buddhist conception of the afterlife, and heartfelt tributes to the artists, writers, musicians and thinkers who inspire her.
USA 2011, 103 min, Dir: Susanne Rostock FEB 2 @ 7PM
Wonderfully archived and told with a remarkable sense of intimacy, Sing Your Song surveys the life and times of singer, actor, and activist Harry Belafonte. From his rise to fame, and his experiences touring a segregated country, to his provocative crossover into Hollywood, Belafonte’s groundbreaking career personifies the American civil rights movement. Rostock reveals Belafonte as a tenacious, hands-on activist who worked intimately with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, mobilized celebrities for social justice, and took action to counter gang violence, imprisonment, and the incarceration of youth. Falling Into Place: Four Films By Satoshi Kon Curated by Brendan Brown and Erin Fraser. Satoshi Kon was an acclaimed Japanese animator and director. During his lifetime he completed only four films, Perfect Blue (1997), Millennium Actress (2001), Tokyo Godfathers (2003), and Paprika (2006), however each of these is a stunning and exceptional piece of visual storytelling. This short body of work explores complex themes of identity and perception, often times blurring the boundary between reality and illusion. They articulate the fragility of the human psyche, showing us the most fantastic, horrifying, and moving places that cinema can take us is inside of ourselves. Metro Cinema revisits the work of this brilliant filmmaker who continues to inspire audiences and artists alike with his extraordinary visuals, complex narratives, and deep concern for the very nature of humanity.

Singer Mima Kirigoe wanted a change and finally got one when she resigned from her bubblegum-pop group to pursue her dream as a dramatic actress. But, as an ingénue, the merciless world of show-business pushes her path to stardom towards exploitation and tests her sense of self—a sense that starts to crumble as industry people around her start being murdered… Initially intended to be a live-action thriller, Kon’s debut film is an influential favourite of directors Darren Aronofsky and Terry Gilliam which focuses a Hitchcockian preoccupation with perception, identity, and feminine performance.
Millennium Actress Japan 2001, 87 min, Dir. Satoshi Kon Japanese with subtitles JAN 16 @ 7PM, 17 @ 4PM, 20 @ 9:30PM
When an old movie studio is being demolished, a television interviewer tracks down its most famous star, the reclusive Chiyo Fujiwara. The aging actress reflects on her life and her career, inviting both the interviewer and his cameraman into her remarkable story. Spanning several decades and genres, Millennium Actress is a rumination on memory, cinema, and the collective and personal experiences that make up our understanding of the world and ourselves. 8

Tokyo Godfathers Japan 2003, 92 min, Dir. Satoshi Kon, Shogo Furuya Japanese with subtitles FEB 6 @ 7PM, 7 @ 4PM, 10 @ 9:30PM
An alcoholic, a trans-woman, and a teenaged runaway hunker down to spend a difficult Christmas homeless in central Tokyo when they discover an abandoned baby and vow to return it home. This bleak premise forms the unlikely basis of Kon’s third animated feature—a zany urban fairy-tale which was, in equal parts, inspired by Frank Capra the sentimentalist and Frank Capra the screwball comedian (It’s a Wonderful Life, It Happened One Night).
USA / China / Canada 2015, 106 min, Dir: Chris Columbus JAN 14 @ 9:30PM
In 1982, a time capsule is sent into space with copies of classic arcade-games. Flash forward to now and aliens are attacking with creatures based on Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Sounds promising? Sadly, this awesome concept is an Adam Sandler film. Bro-centric, a Gamergate attitude to women, and with a rambling idiocy that didn’t even appeal to twelve year old boys, this disaster to poops on 80s nostalgia you didn’t know you had. Game Over! With live commentary, trivia and prizes!

In the near future, psychiatric researchers develop a revolutionary device that allows therapists to view the dreams of their patients. But when the device is stolen from its research facility, the scientists themselves who invented it become the target of psychological attacks. Recovering the device and exposing the thief falls upon Doctor Atsuko Chiba, who develops the alter ego Paprika to enter and restore people’s dreams. Kon’s final completed film blends the lines of reality and imagination, while questioning the increasing power and control that technology exerts over our identities.
This origin story for J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan is dreadful and unnecessary. It’s WWII, Peter lives in an orphanage, and it turns out the nuns are selling kids to pirates. Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard huffs pixie dust like Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet, and Garrett Hedlund is James Hook, with a bizarre John Wayne meets Slim Pickens drawl. “Native Princess” Tiger Lily is played by the very caucasian Rooney Mara, who at least kicks some ass. Peter Panned by the critics, this is a worthy subject Turkey Shoot. With live commentary, trivia and prizes!

Beach Party!
Staff Pics - erica
Hey all you cool dudes, chicks, and hodads, enjoy a taste of summer this winter with Beach Party! A fun, four-film series designed to put a little spring in your step. If you like bikinis, musclemen, Elvis, and great music then these classics are outta sight. The beach party movie was a cultural phenomenon that took the states by storm and lasted from 1963-68, starting with AIP’s Beach Party starring the king and queen of beach party movies: Frankie Avalon and Anette Funicello. This series acts as a sampler to a sub-genre of bygone times.
Have you ever wondered what your favourite cinema’s fine staff watch when they’re not at work? From the front of house to behind the scenes, each month one Metro staff member will present their must see film!

Blue Hawaii USA 1961, 102 min, Dir: Norman Taurog JAN 31 @ 4PM
Arguably the best Hawaiian film Elvis was in and a precursor to the beach party movie genre. Blue Hawaii features Can’t Help Falling in Love, Blue Hawaii, and Aloha ‘Oe and was nominated for a Grammy. When Chad Gates gets out of the army all he wants to do is hit the surf but his dad has other ideas. Faced with getting a job or getting out, Chad decides to lend a hand as a tour guide. Starring Elvis Presley, Joan Blackman, and Angela Lansbury.
Muscle Beach Party 1964, 95 min, Dir: William Asher JAN 19 @ 7PM
Muscle Beach Party starts the night off right. Featuring musical performances by Dick Dale and the Del-Tones and the film debut of “Little” Stevie Wonder (aged 13). Jack Fanny’s bozo body builders (all in pink and purple short-shorts) are ruining Frankie and Deedee’s secret surfing spot, at the same time a bored countess wants a boy toy and tries to lure Frankie’s heart away.
The Girls on the Beach 1965,80 min, Dir: William Whitley JAN 19 @ 9PM
The Girls on the Beach is an incredibly rare treat with fantastic musical guests. Featuring performances by The Crickets, Leslie Gore, and The Beach Boys (this was the only beach film that they wrote and performed original songs for). A bad Ringo Starr impersonator convinces a group of sorority girls that the Beatles will play their dance party. When they realise it’s a hoax it’s too late and they have to do everything possible to raise money and save their sorority. Hijinks ensue. 10

Gidget Goes Hawaiian USA 1961, 101 min, Dir: Paul Wendkos FEB 16 @ 7PM
Deborah Walley takes up the Gidget role previously helmed by Sally Fields and Sandra Dee. In this installment of the Gidget franchise Gidget finds herself forced on a family vacation to Hawaii and separated from her beloved Moondoggie. When she finally decides to have some fun on her vacation, things take a turn for the worse. Will Gidget and Moondoggie get back together or will this Hawaiian vacation turn into a heartbreaker?
Alien USA 1979, 117 min, Dir: Ridley Scott JAN 25 @ 7PM
“In space, no one can hear you scream” were the words that echoed through Front of House manager Erica’s head as she sat down to watch Alien for the first time with her dad. She was young, maybe 7 or 8, but mature for her age, or so her parents said, and the tag line is what piqued her interest. “Are you sure you want to watch this?” Dad asked. “I wanna see the alien!” replied young Erica. The movie played, and ended, and a starry-eyed and completely fascinated, young Erica dreamt of having an Alien as a pet. Unfortunately the dream never came true... but seeing Alien on the big screen at the Garneau Theatre is a great alternative. In Ridley Scott’s Alien, the commercial vessel Nostromo receives a distress call from an unexplored planet. After searching for survivors, the crew heads home only to realize that a deadly bioform has joined them. January 25 Alien double feature with Dark Star: H.R. Giger’s World at 9:15PM (see page 7)

A River Runs Through it USA 1992, 123 min, Dir: Robert Redford FEB 15 @ 7PM
Dan is Metro Cinema’s Operations Manager. On the rare occasion that he has a day off work, he likes to spend his free time in the wilderness, fishing. It makes perfect sense that his film selection is A River Runs Through It. Set in the stunning backdrop of rural Montana, A River Runs Through It tells the story of two brothers who are different in many ways, yet share a strong bond and a love for fishing. The film shows us that true art, not at all bound by medium or convention, is a product of passion, adventure and a certain wildness of spirit. It also reminds us of both the beautiful and the dark places such a spirit can lead.

France 1960, 90 min, French w/ subtitles, Director: Jean-Luc Godard FEB 12 @ 7PM, 14 @ 2PM, 16 @ 9:15PM
There was before Breathless, and there was after Breathless. With its lack of polish, surplus of attitude, anything-goes crime narrative, and effervescent young stars Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg, it helped launch the French New Wave and ensured that cinema would never be the same.
