Metro Cinema is a community-based non-profit society. We believe that film, video, and digital media are significant art forms and means of communication, and that many innovative films, videos, and digital media are overlooked by conventional theatres, including Canadian, international, and independent film, video, and digital media. We are devoted to the exhibition and promotion of this work in Edmonton. To this end, Metro exhibits an eclectic blend of film, video, and digital media that are not screened anywhere else in the city. Metro’s focus is on presenting a broad selection of educational, cultural, and innovative works. The Society operates with the ongoing assistance of a large volunteer base. We regularly distribute a program, facilitate discussion, and bring in artists to enhance the experience and understanding of film, video, and digital media. Metro Cinema is grateful for the support of these funders

Metro is also grateful for the support of the following: Alberta Media Arts Alliance, Capital FM , CJSR, FAVA , The Tomato, and VUE Weekly

A geologist tries to prevent a cataclysm when a mountain overlooking a popular Norwegian tourist destination begins to collapse into the ocean. This exhilarating thriller overpowers the senses and engulfs the screen with images of awe and terror. The Wave is a fearsomely vivid depiction of a disaster no one could ever truly prepare for — though one tenacious man will do his best to sound the alarm and prevent all-out tragedy. (Steve Gravestock, TIFF)

The smalls were a legendary musical phenomenon in Western Canada. After saying Goodbye Forever, and 13 years apart, they reformed for one last redemptive tour - closing the loop internally as bandmates, estranged friends, and with their long-adoring fans. From rekindled beginnings to a sold-out coast to coast tour, the film explores the journey of memory, age, and the power of music to erase the years for player and fan alike. This is not a story of failure and glass ceilings, but rather of great success and self-actualization. 6

SHAKESPEARE ON THE SILVER SCREEN Metro Cinema celebrates the 400th anniversary of the death of the most prolific screenwriter ever. There have been more than 600 film adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays. We present three of our favourites: the larger than life genius of Orson Welles’ Chimes at Midnight; Baz Luhrmann gloriously over the top Romeo + Juliet, and a new adaptation of Macbeth, featuring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, that “brims, quite rightly, with blood and flame; the screen, by the close, is a terrible sea of red.”

Macbeth UK/France/USA (2015), 113 min, Dir: Justin Kurzel MAR 4 @ 7PM, MAR 5 @ 9:30PM, MAR 6 @ 2PM, MAR 7 @ 7PM, MAR 10 @ 9:30PM

Macbeth, Thane of Glamis, receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders his king and takes the throne for himself. He furthers his moral descent with a reign of murderous terror to stay in power, eventually plunging the country into civil war. Starring Michael Fassbender & Marion Cotillard.

Chimes at Midnight France/Spain/Switzerland (1965), 115 min, Dir: Orson Welles MAR 6 @ 4:15PM, MAR 9 @ 7PM, MAR 13 @ 1PM

Sir John Falstaff is the hero in this compilation of extracts from Shakespeare’s ‘Henry IV’ and other plays, that are made into a connected story of Falstaff’s career as young Prince Hal’s drinking companion. The massive knight imbibes with and without the prince, philosophizes comically, goes to war (in his own fashion), and meets his final disappointment, set in a real-looking latemedieval England.

Romeo + Juliet USA (1996), 120 min, Dir: Baz Luhrmann MAR 6 @ 9:30PM, MAR 8 @ 9:30PM

The classic Shakespearean romantic tragedy is updated to a post-modern Verona Beach where swords are merely a brand of gun. Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) is aloof toward the goings-on of his Montague cousins, but after he realizes that Juliet (Claire Danes) is a Capulet at the end of one very wild party, the enmity between the two clans becomes the root of his angst. It ends, as Romeo and Juliet must – this time, though, the turf and the weapon of choice have taken a turn toward the surreal.

You Can’t Keep A Good Woman Down Festival Metro Cinema is proud to present a three-night event, produced in honour of International Women’s Day, and of Edmonton women, to highlight creativity, resilience, and advocacy.

Unnatural & Accidental Canada 2006, 90 min, Dir: Carl Bessai MAR 15 @ 7PM

Rebecca has returned home to be with her dying father. His last wish is that she track down her mother, an Aboriginal woman who has long been missing. As she turns over the stones that hide the debris of the unwanted and forgotten, she is drawn into the mysteries of 10 missing Native women whose spirits lead Rebecca to the killer, a man who still haunts the alleys, streets and hotels of the urban wasteland.

Screens with short film

Suffragette UK 2015, 106 min, Dir: Sarah Gavron MAR 8 @ 7PM

Inspired by true events in the early feminist movement, Suffragette explores the passion and heartbreak of the women who risked all they had in their fight for equality– their jobs, their homes, their children, and even their lives. The stirring story centers on Maud, a working wife and mother who becomes an activist for the Suffragette cause alongside women from all walks of life. Preshow at 5:30PM. Featuring Edmonton Women Authors in Conversation, SkirtsAfire, Prof. Joan Sangster of the Canadian Historical Association, City Councillor Bev Esslinger, and more. In partnership with Audreys Books. 8

Cree artist Jesse Gouchey paints a large scale animation of a bluebird in flight on a fence and garage where Aboriginal mother and grandmother Gloria Black Plume was brutally murdered in 1999. Preshow at 5:30PM. Featuring a curated art exhibit by Stacey Cann - Executive Director of Harcourt House, live music, Chief Ernie Crey, brother of the murdered Dawn Crey, Muriel Stanley Venne of the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women, and more. Filmmaker Q&A following the show featuring Carl Bessai, Xstine Cook, Jesse Gouchay, Muriel Stanley Venne and Roxanne Blood.

She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry USA 2014, 92 min, Dir: Mary Dore MAR 22 @ 7PM

The film tells the story of the brilliant, and often outrageous, women who founded the feminist movement of the 1960s. They said “the personal is political” and made a revolution: in the bedroom, in the workplace, in all spheres of life. Called threatening by the FBI, yet ignored in many histories, these women changed the world. Preshow at 5:30PM. Featuring: Nakita Valerio of the Alberta Muslim Public Affairs Council, live music, and more.

Be sure to catch Tommy and his friends the first Friday of the month for a late night screening this classic piece of so-badit’s-good cinema. You’re my favourite customer. Thanks a lot! Bye. Audience participation is encouraged. Please respect the theatre and fellow patrons.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY

STAFF PICS Have you ever wondered what your favourite cinema’s fine staff watch when they’re not at work? From the front of house to behind the scenes, each month one Metro staff member presents their must see film!

A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence Sweden/Germany/Norway/France/ Denmark 2014, 101 min, Dir: Roy Andersson Swedish & English with subtitles Staff Pics: Tim MAR 14 @ 7PM

Tim Rechner is an Edmonton based visual artist and musician. He works Front of House at Metro Cinema and also curates the Music Docs monthly film series. He chose this film because he loves the unique filmmaking style of director Roy Andersson.

A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence is the third installment in Roy Andersson’s “Living” trilogy. Sam and Jonathan, a pair of hapless novelty salesmen, embark on a tour of the human condition in reality and fantasy that unfold in a series of absurdist episodes. With live music performance by Pigeon Breeders. Music at 6:30PM. Film at 7PM.

Tootsie USA 1982, 116 min, Dir: Sydney Pollack Staff Pics: Lauren APR 11 @ 7PM

The duality of Dustin Hoffman’s characters in Tootsie somewhat parallels what Metro’s bookkeeper lives in her daily life. You may not see her around the Garneau Theatre, Next Act Pub, MEAT BBQ, or Cookies By George as she’s hiding in an office crunching numbers, but you might have seen her on stage around Edmonton singing with her band. She’s excited to let you in on her lighter side as she shares with you this beloved comedy. Michael Dorsey is an unemployed actor with an impossible reputation. In order to find work he dresses as a woman, Dorothy Michaels, and lands a part in a daytime drama. This newfound role, however, lands Dorsey in a hot spot between a female friend/’lover,’ a female co-star he falls in love with, that co-star’s father who falls in love with him, and a male co-star who yearns for his affection.

TURKEY SHOOT Metro Cinema’s monthly celebration of aesthetically challenged films. A live show hosted by Dave Clarke (with special sarcastic guests).

MAR 17

The Irish Pub Ireland 2013, 76 min, Dir: Alex Fegan MAR 17 @ 7PM

This documentary is a celebration of the greatest institution in Irish society: the pub, or more specifically the traditional Irish publicans who run them. The characters in this exceptionally endearing film all run and own pubs that have been in their families for generations and it is through their warmth, wit, and wisdom that we gain an insight into the heart and soul of what makes the classic Irish pub so great. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! 18+ licensed, no minors. Irish drink specials! 14

metrocinema.org

What better way to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day? Dan O’Grady returns from Ireland with a pot of gold he has stolen from a leprechaun, who stows away in O’Grady’s suitcase; how did that get past security? Writer/director Mark Jones, inspired by the Lucky Charms commercials, wondered what if the leprechaun was EVIL? Originally shot as a kids’ film, the studio added gore and violence explaining the uneven tone. The moral of the story? Don’t kidnap leprechauns. Audience, your luck just ran out. With live commentary from James Hamilton and Cat Walsh, trivia and prizes! 18+ licensed, no minors. Irish drink specials!

Victor Frankenstein USA (2015), 110 min, Dir: Paul McGuigan APR 21 @ 9:30PM

It’s alive! Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter? Awesome! Victor Frankenstein rescues Igor from the circus, and by sucking the pus out of his hump (seriously), transforms him into - well, Harry Potter. An obvious attempt to do a Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes with a fast-talking Victor, this terrible film, stitched together out of spare parts, never reanimates. With live commentary and horror geek rage from Dave Clarke, James Hamilton, and Cat Walsh, plus trivia and prizes! 18+ licensed, no minors.

GATEWAY TO CINEMA A film series co-presented by The Gateway, the official student newspaper of the University of Alberta.

METRO BIZARRO Metro Bizarro is a foray into the weird, wacky, and wonderful world of fringe cinema. It explores the twisted underbelly of Hollywood and beyond, screening filmic gems that literally need to be seen to be believed. Curated by Maggie Hardy.

Hank and Mike Spirited Away Japan 2001, 125 min, Dir: Hayao Miyazaki Japanese with subtitles MAR 23 @ 7PM

10-year-old Chihiro and her parents are heading for a new home in the provinces until they get lost in a secluded woods and are transported to a strange other world, where her parents are then turned into pigs by a mysterious curse. Chihiro ends up working for a witch named Yubaba at a very strange bathhouse in the Japanese countryside, where a boy named Haku arrives to help Chihiro survive the adventure, and save her parents. Free admission for students with valid ID. See more Studio Ghibli: Only Yesterday Mar 2529 (see page 6). Ponyo on Apr 2 (see page 10).

Canada 2008, 86 min, Dir: Matthiew Klinck MAR 23 @ 9:30PM

In remembrance of director Matthiew Klinck, Metro Bizarro presents a special Easter screening of Hank and Mike. When two Easter bunnies get downsized they find themselves unemployed and unemployable. Mike is a goody two shoes, winner of the highest honour an Easter bunny can receive (The Golden Egg) and one of the best bunnies to ever work for Easter, his partner Hank is a beer swilling, pot smoking, porno watching pervert who skips a delivery and gets them both in hot water. A dark comedy about friendship, bureaucracy, and chocolate eggs.

Reform School Girls USA 1986, 94 min, Dir:Tom DeSimone APR 13 @ 7PM

This month Bizarro presents one of the curator’s favourite films. Reform School Girls is one of few cases where the genre spoof is a solid example of the genre. Nubile babes from all walks of life find themselves in an unjust prison where the only thing worse than the inmates are the wardens. Featuring performances from The Plasmastics’ Wendy O. Williams, Sybil Danning, and Warhol star Pat Ast, RSG pushes the boundaries to bring an infamous shower scene, a hose down, and a brutal “Kitty Stomp”. A wild punk rock-softcore-dayglo women in prison flick.

MONTY PYTHON-A-THON Monty Python’s genius was to respect nothing. When they came on the scene, the average comedy show was like a stage revue with a few cameras pointed at it. The Pythons took liberties with the medium. They did things you could do only on TV. Metro Cinema invites you to spend Easter weekend with us revisiting some of the Pythons’ best works.

Life of Brian UK 1979, 94 min, Dir: Terry Jones MAR 27 @ 9:30PM

The story of Brian of Nazareth, born on the same day as Jesus of Nazareth, who takes a different path in life that leads to the same conclusion. Brian joins a political resistance movement aiming to get the Romans out of Judea, and scores a victory of sorts when he manages to paint political slogans on an entire wall in the city of Jerusalem. The movement is not very effective but somehow Brian becomes a prophet and gathers his own following.

Quote-A-Long Monty Python and the Holy Grail And Now for Something Completely Different UK 1971, 88 min, Dir: Ian MacNaughton MAR 24 @ 9:30PM

An anthology of Monty Python’s best sketches from the first and second seasons of the original TV show. Includes such classics as Nudge, Nudge, Hell’s Grannies, Killer Cars, Dead Parrot, Lumberjack Song, Blackmail and Upper Class Twit of the Year. 16

UK (1975), 91 min, Dir: Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam MAR 26 @ 9:30PM

A quote-along Holy Grail? Join Metro Cinema for a night of interactive silliness with King Arthur his knights of the Round Table as they face the French, a wizard named Tim, killer rabbits, and lessons in the use of holy hand grenades, on their quest from God: to find the Holy Grail. We’ll leave the subtitles on so you know when to say “NI” and “it’s just a flesh wound”, and join the peasant Dennis in his diatribe against the government.

The Meaning of Life UK 1983, 107 min, Dir: Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam MAR 28 @ 9:30PM

Why are we here, what’s it all about? The Monty Python-team is trying to sort out the most important question on Earth: what is the meaning of life? They do so by exploring the various stages of life, starting with birth, in their own uniquely silly ways: a doctor seems more interested in his equipment than in delivering the baby, an officer’s plan to attack is thwarted by his underlings wanting to celebrate his birthday, a middle age couple orders ‘philosophy’ at a restaurant.

EASTER WEEKEND

SCIENCE IN CINEMA Presented by the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, Science in the Cinema aims to illuminate the science in popular cinema and provide a venue for the public to learn about current research happening in Alberta. Each screening includes a discussion with an Alberta researcher in a related field.

Amour Bugs Bunny/Road-Runner Movie USA 1979, 98 min, Dir: Chuck Jones, Phil Monroe MAR 25 @ 2PM, MAR 28 @ 2PM

From his distinguished retirement in a carrotfilled mansion in Beverly Hills, Bugs Bunny introduces the stories of dozens of cartoon adventures created at the Warner Bros. animation department. Besides featuring Bugs and the Road Runner, the film contains adventures with Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and Elmer Fudd, including the classic, Duck Amuck.

Jesus Christ Superstar 1973, 108 min, Dir: Norman Jewison MAR 25 @ 4:30PM, MAR 28 @ 4:30PM

Based on a concept album project written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, and the subsequent long-running Broadway performance, this film tells the story of the final 6 days in the life of Jesus Christ through the troubled eyes of Judas Iscariot. Too often mislabelled a musical, this film is a “rock opera.” There are no spoken lines, everything is sung.

France/Germany/Austria 2012, 127 min, Dir: Michael Haneke French & English with subtitles MAR 31 @ 6:30PM

Georges and Anne are retired music teachers enjoying life in their eighties, but when Anne suddenly has a stroke at breakfast their lives are never the same. The incident begins Anne’s harrowingly steep physical and mental decline as Georges attempts to care for her at home. Even as the fruits of their lives and career remain bright, the couple’s hopes for some dignity prove a dispiriting struggle even as their daughter enters the conflict. Free admission and small popcorn.

auteurs Hitchcock/Truffaut “will thrill you and change the way you watch movies” (Esquire), so Metro Cinema provides an opportunity to see this great documentary side by side with Psycho and Jules and Jim.

Hitchcock/Truffaut France/USA 2015, 79 min, Dir: Kent Jones French, English & Japanese w/ subtitles APR 1 @ 9:15PM, APR 2 @ 7:15PM, APR 3 @ 2PM, APR 6 @ 9:15PM

In 1962, Francois Truffaut persuaded Alfred Hitchcock to sit with him for a week long interview, during which the great British auteur would share the secrets of his cinema. Based on the original recordings of this meeting— used to produce the seminal book “Hitchcock/ Truffaut”—this film illustrates the greatest cinema lesson of all time and plunges us into the world of the creator of Psycho, The Birds, and Vertigo.

Jules and Jim Psycho USA 1960, 109 min, Dir: Alfred Hitchcock APR 2 @ 9PM

After stealing $40,000 from her employer in Phoenix to free her lover from the aftermath of alimony, Marion Crane heads west to meet him in California. When the elements and exhaustion get the better of her, she takes refuge at the Bates Motel, which begins her brief but fateful association with its proprietor, Norman Bates. Part thriller, part horror story, Psycho shocked audiences when it was first released, by challenging narrative conventions and undermining moral, and aesthetic, rules.

France 1962, 105 min, Dir: François Truffaut French & German & English with subtitles APR 3 @ 3:30

Before the start of WWI two friends in Paris, Jules and Jim, fall in love with the same woman, Catherine. But Catherine is in love with Jules, and they get married. After the war, when they meet again in Germany, and Catherine starts to fall in love with Jim.
