METRO CINEMA is a community-based non-profit society. We believe that film, video, and digital media are significant art forms and means of communication, and that many innovative films, videos, and digital media are overlooked by conventional theatres, including Canadian, international, and independent film, video, and digital media. We are devoted to the exhibition and promotion of this work in Edmonton. To this end, Metro exhibits an eclectic blend of film, video, and digital media that are not screened anywhere else in the city. Metro’s focus is on presenting a broad selection of educational, cultural, and innovative works. The Society operates with the ongoing assistance of a large volunteer base. We regularly distribute a program, facilitate discussion, and bring in artists to enhance the experience and understanding of film, video, and digital media. Marlon & MarilyN:
Iconoclysm Marlon Brando. His Stanley Kowalski’s brutish intensity in A Streetcar Named Desire transformed film acting. His performance in The Wild One shaped leather culture for decades. With his muscular frame and prominent features, he presented a macho exterior that blended with stories of bedding hundreds of women. This was a “man’s man”, right?
Re-examined now, Marilyn is perhaps no longer a feminist martyr nor a traitor to her sex, but rather an intelligent actor whose performances are often funny, nuanced and surprisingly ballsy. We see the glimmers of this strength in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and a more mature and nuanced Marilyn in The Misfits. And in Some Like It Hot we have Marilyn taking charge. Marilyn as the teller of jokes rather than the butt of them. Marilyn as the emotional centre of what would otherwise be an entirely formulaic crossdressing comedy. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon were two of the hottest stars of the era, and she is justifiably the top billing in what was written as a buddy comedy.
Marilyn Monroe. Her carefully crafted image and killer curves marked her an archetype of feminine beauty for decades after her death. Celebrities continue to copy her style, and she remains one of the most recognizable figures (pun only slightly intended) worldwide. Her hypersexualized persona, and her victimization by a The new documentary Listen series of men and studios, have to Me Marlon uses a mixture of made her a kind of cautionary film footage, interview footage, tale in feminist thought. contemporary commentary and There has always been a private audio recordings that countercurrent of femininity Brando himself made over a to Brando’s image, though. Ally Was Screaming
four friends rode horseback across an almost contiguous stretch of unspoiled public lands, border to border, from Mexico to Canada. The trip is an epic journey of self-discovery, challenged friendships, and iconic landscapes that includes runaway horses, a sassy donkey, perilous mountain passes, rodeo rides, sickness, injury, and death.

Hadwin’s Judgement Canada 2015, 87 min, Dir: Sasha Snow NOV 18 @ 7PM
The film chronicles the tormented transformation of Grant Hadwin from expert logger to environmental terrorist, a man who dares to challenge the destruction of the world’s last great temperate rainforest. Hadwin’s one-man crusade culminates in a perverse and outrageous act of protest that is, in itself, a crime against nature. The film interweaves speculation, myth and journalism to explore the motives for and consequences of Hadwin’s tragic protest. It charts his descent into torment and self-destruction, a journey that ends with a mysterious discovery that made him not just a ‘madman’, but also a visionary. A National Film Board (NFB) production.

Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of the National Lampoon USA 2015, 98 min, Dir: Douglas Tirola DEC 6 @ 7PM, 9 @ 9PM ,10 @ 9:30PM,
From the 1970s through the 1990s, there was no hipper, no more outrageous comedy in print than The National Lampoon, the ground-breaking humor magazine that pushed the limits of taste and acceptability – and then pushed them even harder. Parodying everything from politics, religion, entertainment and the whole of American lifestyle, the Lampoon eventually went on to branch into successful radio shows, record albums, live stage revues and movies, including Animal House and National Lampoon’s Vacation. See page 19 for more National Lampoon!

If Canadian wunderkind Guy Maddin is Winnipeg’s own living film legend, The Forbidden Room is his ultimate epic phantasmagoria. Honoring classic cinema while electrocuting it with energy, the film begins with the crew of a doomed submarine chewing flapjacks in a desperate attempt to breathe the oxygen within. Suddenly, impossibly, a lost woodsman wanders into their company and tells his tale of escaping from a fearsome clan of cave dwellers. From here, Maddin takes us high into the air, around the world, and into dreamscapes, spinning tales of amnesia, captivity, deception and murder, skeleton women and vampire bananas.
During the ninth century, a general’s young daughter is kidnapped and trained to become an exceptional assassin. When she doesn’t execute a mission, she is ordered to kill her betrothed, forcing her to choose between love, family and the assassins. Winner of the best director prize at Cannes, “the film is full of transcendent images that will likely inspire awe. Alongside its minimalist treatment of the martial arts elements — with minimal wire-work and no bloodshed — The Assassin summons a strangely rapturous experience from its ostensibly bewildering narrative, which only adds to the air of mystique. An instant classic.” (Edmund Lee)

It’s the season of joy, peace, and goodwill... unless you live in Bailey Downs. Last Christmas Eve, two teens came to a grisly end in a school basement. Now, one year later, a new set of horrors has come to town. A couple notices their young son is acting strangely after a snowy forest trip to cut down a traditional tree, and another family are stalked through a winter wonderland by Krampus, the Xmas demon. Meanwhile at the North Pole, Santa is fending off zombie elves. This is destined to be a holiday no one will ever forget. From the Alberta based creators of Ginger Snaps. Bailey is a member of Metro Cinema’s front of house staff. She has been known for having relatively odd interests, especially taking her age into consideration. For example, having a peculiar fascination with various outlaws from the age of 13. So to no surprise Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid has always been a favourite of hers. Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid is the 1973 adaptation based on the true events of the late 1800’s outlaw Billy the kid and his former best friend turned Sheriff Pat Garrett. Garrett is hired to take down old pal Billy by the cattle businessmen once and for all, despite (or perhaps because of) their prior relationship.

The HBO series Entourage ran for eight seasons and was based on Mark Wahlberg’s experiences in L.A. In the movie spin-off, your favourite loveable (?) dickheads return. Vince (Marky Mark stand-in Adrian Grenier) talks his ex-agent Ari (Jeremy Piven) into letting him direct a movie named Hyde. Ari is now a studio head. We wonder who talked who into allowing Entourage to be filmed? Self-referential comedy gold? Nope. Entourage plumbs new depths of shallowness, vanity and sexism. Billy Bob Thornton and Haley Joel Osment show up, and even Mark Wahlberg looks embarrassed by his cameo. with live commentary, trivia and prizes! 16

We at Turkey Shoot love Jack Kirby’s wildly inventive 1960s creation the Fantastic Four. After Halle Berry’s Catwoman (2004), we didn’t think a superhero film could get any worse. It did, with this $122 million bomb; a bizarre combo of indie sulker and Cronenbergian body horror. The decent cast (Miles Teller, Kate Mara) belly-flop, and what’s with Doctor Doom’s Easter Island head mask? The film was plagued by costly reshoots and re-edited by the studio. This unnecessary reboot makes previous film versions look like Citizen Kane. ’Nuff Said! with live Nerd rage commentary, trivia and prizes!

marlon There was no aspect of contemporary culture that Marlon Brando knew better than the destructive nature of celebrity. Launched into fame unexpectedly at the age of twenty-three, Brando believed that the masses were doomed when they projected their own power onto idealized objects of worship. No one was worthy of such idolatry—least of all actors and entertainers. Brando’s films will endure for generations to come. What we have begun to learn since his death in 2004 is how much this had to do with the values and aspirations of the man who starred in them. (Susan Mizruchi)

Blanche’s flirtatious Southern-belle presence causes problems for Stella and Stanley, who already have a volatile relationship, leading to even greater conflict in the Kowalski household.
Bye Bye Blues
Marilyn As one of the most bankable Hollywood stars of the 1950s, Marilyn Monroe made only 30 films in her lifetime, yet her legendary status and mysticism will remain in film history forever. Monroe’s enduring popularity is linked to her conflicted public image. On the one hand, she remains a sex symbol, beauty icon and one of the most famous stars of classical Hollywood cinema. On the other, she is also remembered for her troubled private life, unstable childhood, struggle for professional respect, and her premature death and the conspiracy theories surrounding it.
Marlon Brando gives one of the screen’s most electrifying performances, and the film received Oscars for best actor, director, screenplay and film. Ex-fighter Terry Malloy (Brando) could have been a contender but now toils for boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) on the gang-ridden waterfront. Terry is guilt-stricken, however, when he lures a rebellious worker to his death. But it takes the love of Edie Doyle (Eva Marie Saint), the dead man’s sister, to show Terry how low he has fallen.

When Daisy Cooper discovers that her husband has been captured during Singapore’s fall to the Japanese in World War II, she takes a job as a piano player with a local dance band in order to make a living for herself and her children. For Daisy, the war offers a bitterly ironic blessing: while it has separated her from her husband, it has introduced her to a side of life, not to mention herself, she might otherwise never have known. When word reaches her that peace has been declared and her husband is on his way home, Daisy faces her own conflicting loyalties and desires.

The Misfits USA 1961, 124 min, Dir: John Huston DEC 5 @ 7PM, 6 @ 4:30PM, 7 @ 9PM
This motion picture was the final film appearance for Monroe, as sadly she died the following year. Marilyn plays a sexy divorcée who falls for an over-the-hill cowboy (Clark Gable) who is struggling to maintain his romantically independent lifestyle in early-sixties Nevada.
After witnessing a Mafia murder, slick saxophone player Joe (Tony Curtis) and his long-suffering buddy, Jerry (Jack Lemmon), improvise a quick plan to escape from Chicago. Disguising themselves as women, they join an all-female jazz band and hop a train bound for sunny Florida. While Joe pretends to be a millionaire to win the band’s sexy singer, Sugar (Marilyn Monroe), Jerry finds himself pursued by a real millionaire (Joe E. Brown) as things heat up and the mobsters close in.

Saturday Morning All-YouCan-Eat-Cereal Cartoon Party!
Turkey 1982, 91 min Dir: Cetin Inanc Turkish w/ subtitles DEC 18 @ 11:30PM, 27 @ 9:15
World - Wide, 150 min, Curator: Kier-La Janisse DEC 19 @ 10AM
Upon its initial release, Turkish Star Wars was panned by critics for its incoherent storyline, poor performances, and use of stock footage and music from other films. Despite this, the film has gained a significant cult following over the years. Two space cadets crash-land on a desert planet, where an evil wizard seeks the ultimate power to take over the world. Although the movie borrows some background footage from Star Wars, the plot is mostly unrelated.
Andrew Ference Presents: Baraka The Shortest Day
Remember Saturday mornings? Kids today may not realize the significance of the Saturday morning ritual, but once upon a time, we had to wait a whole week to get our cartoon fix, and when we got it, we tended to binge. In that gleefully gluttonous spirit, curator Kier-La Janisse presents a 3-hour trip down memory lane with a tribute to the Saturday morning cartoons of yore, complete with a smorgasbord of sugary cereals. You’ll see both favs and obscurities spanning the 60s to 80s, all punctuated with vintage commercials and PSAs! The lineup is a secret, but there are sailors, sleuths, superheroes, and more, so get ready for a sugar rush and an explosion of nostalgia wrapped up in one candy-coated package. Adults: $14 | Students/Seniors: $12 | Children 12 & Under: $10 Admission includes cereal. Metro Passes: Only Silver Screen Passes Accepted.
