Statement on the Sculpture and Career of Retha Walden Gambaro By Dr. Letitia Chambers* Creek artist Retha Walden Gambaro did not begin her stellar career until age 52, yet she captured the hearts of collectors and is recognized for the quality of her work and the emotion it evokes. Retha Walden was born in a log cabin in Oklahoma in 1917 to a Creek mother and a father of British descent. At a young age, at a time when many Indian children were being kidnapped and sent to Indian Boarding schools, her mother successfully shielded her from being taken away by dyeing her dark hair blonde. When she was about six years old, her family moved to Phoenix, AZ, where she spent most of her childhood. She moved with her family to California as a young woman, where she worked as a dressmaker and designer, and married Italian American, Stephen Gambaro, who was a veteran just returning from World War II. They later moved to Washington DC, and in the 1970s when her children were grown, she began to devote herself to her art, working in clay and focusing on realistic figures of animals and children. She studied at the Corcoran School of Art and was chosen to apprentice with master sculptor and professor Berthold Schmutzhart. Gambaro worked in both clay and stone, and cast many of her works in bronze using the lost wax process. While classically trained, Gambaro’s sculptures directly reflect her American Indian heritage, with works like Stickball Player,1991 (lot 1015), Preparing the Pipe, 1997 (lot1064) and Harvest, 1997 (lot 1057), which features a woman holding a basket of foods native to the Americas. One of her earliest works, Grandfather, 1976 (lot 1000), a cold cast copper bust of her Creek grandfather, reflects the Creek tradition of works in copper, which dates to the archaic period. Her works in stone also have antecedents in the ancient stone carvings in the Mississippian culture of her Creek ancestors. She cast many smaller works before turning to life sized or larger figures. Gambaro is known for the variety and the beauty of her bronze patinas. Gambaro’s most outstanding works were sculpted in her late 70s or 80s, when she created an emotionally compelling series of monumental sculptures that she entitled “Attitudes of Prayer”. The power of contemplation and meditation is a strong underlying theme of these beautiful bronzes. Each of these masterful works is a powerful statement on its own, but the intensity conveyed by the series as a whole creates a sense of the universality of human experience and of the gentle nature of the human spirit. The pieces in the series were first created in stone before being cast in bronze. The series shows Gambaro’s movement, late in her career, toward abstract expression, as seen particularly in Exultation II, 1997 (lot 1052) and Gratitude II, 1996 (lot 1056). According to Gambaro’s own description, “My goal was to create maximum feeling with minimum detail.” Gambaro is internationally recognized for her works in bronze and stone. Her sculptures have been featured in dozens of exhibits, and her works are included in major museums and private Sale Date – February 28th, 2017 (Lots 1000-1237)

collections. Gambaro has exhibited in such diverse venues as the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, which exhibited a major retrospective of her work in 2011-2014; the Museum of Indian Art and Culture in Santa Fe, New Mexico; the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown, Maryland, the Yah-Ta-hey Gallery in New London, Connecticut, and the Slater Museum in Norwich, Connecticut. She has also been commissioned to create sculptures for a number of organizations, such as the Washington DC Convention Center, the International Franchise Foundation in Hawaii, the Wesley Theological Seminary in DC, and Howard University. Gambaro died September 9, 2013 at age 95. Gambaro’s contribution to the art world goes beyond her own works of art in that she was a great champion of and furthered the careers of many American Indian artists. She was a founder of the Amerindian Foundation, which pushed for the creation of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI). In 1982 she was a co-chair of the “Night of the First Americans” at the Kennedy Center, which was a celebrated gala fundraiser for the creation of NMAI, which included an exhibit of American Indian Art, which she curated. In 1982, she also curated a major yearlong exhibit of American Indian Art at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History. In the 1970s she and her husband opened Via Gambaro Gallery on Capitol Hill, the first art gallery in the Washington DC area exhibiting contemporary native artists, which introduced the works of many American Indian artists to the East Coast and the world of fine art. Many leading American Indian artists were featured in her gallery and credit her with advancing their careers.

*Dr. Letitia Chambers is a former President and CEO of the Heard Museum in Phoenix, where she curated a major exhibition of Gambaro’s sculpture, which was very favorably reviewed in the New York Times (February 3, 2012). She currently is writing a book on Gambaro, with an expected publication date in 2018. Chambers also had a long and notable career in public policy in Washington DC, and she served as US Ambassador to the United Nation’s General Assembly in 1996.

LIMITED GUARANTEE Notwithstanding the preceding paragraph, The Potomack Company does offer a limited guarantee that items that are offered for sale are not counterfeit, unless otherwise noted in the catalogue or at the time of the sale. A counterfeit for this purpose is defined as a modern fake or forgery that was made with the intent to deceive. If a buyer gives us notice within 14 days of the sale that an item that was purchased was a counterfeit and, within 7 days of such notice, provides a written report from an authority that demonstrates that the item was indeed counterfeit and that a fair reading of the catalogue description and the auctioneer’s statements at the time of the sale did not indicate this, then The Potomack Company will rescind the sale and refund the purchase price to the buyer. This guarantee is made only to the original buyer (i.e., a registered bidder) and does not extend to any subsequent purchasers. In any event, any liability that The Potomack Company has for such a sale is limited to the purchase price of the item sold. INSPECTION AND CONDITION REPORTS We strongly encourage you to come and examine lots that you are interested in purchasing. Although we do not include condition reports in this catalogue, our representatives are happy to assist you in determining the condition of items that you are interested in as they are able. Given the high volume of requests for condition reports, however, we must reserve the right to limit such requests to those items with a low-end pre-sale estimate of more than $500. BUYER’S PREMIUM A buyer’s premium will be added to the hammer price of each lot sold. The Potomack Company’s buyer’s premium is equal to 25% of the hammer price. BIDDING We reserve the right to reject any bid for any reason. The highest bidder acknowledged by the Auctioneer at the time his hammer drops will be the buyer of the lot. The Auctioneer has the sole right to re-offer any lot and/or settle disputed bids. In the event that a dispute arises after the end of the sale, our sale record shall be conclusive. The Auctioneer reserves the right to reject any opening bid (or advance from an accepted opening bid) that he believes, in his sole discretion, is not commensurate with the value of the lot or that does not meet the reserve, and withdraw that lot from sale. Although we are happy to accept your absentee, telephone, and internet bids, we will not be held responsible for any errors or failure to properly execute such bids. Bidders may submit absentee bids until 12:00 pm Alexandria Time the day before the auction. All bids placed at auction are per lot.

BUYER’S RESPONSIBILITIES If you are the buyer of the lot, title to the items in the lot passes to you as soon as the Auctioneer’s hammer falls. At that time, you assume full risk and responsibility for the items you have purchased. You must then pay the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium and Virginia sales tax, as applicable. The sum of the buyer’s premium and the hammer price equals the purchase price. The Virginia sales tax is calculated as 6% of the purchase price. Although you are encouraged to take your property with you the day of the auction, items may be left on our premises for up to two weeks after the sale. After that time, however, we reserve the right to transfer any remaining items to a public warehouse at your risk and expense. Any items that are not picked up within the two day time period will be subject to a handling and storage fee of 5% of the purchase price. This fee will be assessed weekly. We assume no risk or responsibility for items that are left on our premises after the sale or that are transferred to a public warehouse. RESERVES Some lots may carry reserves or minimum selling prices. This is a confidential figure set by the consignor and The Potomack Company below which the item will not be sold. The reserve will always be less than (or equal to) our final low estimate for the lot. The Auctioneer will execute the reserve bid. ESTIMATES All pre-sale estimates of the value of the lots are intended only as guides for potential bidders. Our pre-sale estimates may not be relied upon by anyone as a prediction of the selling price or the fair market value of any lot. The actual selling price may differ greatly from our estimates. All estimates that are provided by us are subject to revision at any time. WITHDRAWAL Items may be withdrawn from sale at anytime prior to the offering of each lot. PAYMENT We accept cash, checks and major credit cards. We reserve the right to hold items that you have purchased until your payment clears. We reserve the right to charge you a late fee of 10% for any unpaid balances over 30 days. As previously noted, payment is due at the end of each sale unless we have authorized other arrangements. BUYER’S DEFAULT If you fail to comply with any of these Terms and Conditions, we reserve the right to hold you liable for the purchase price plus any expenses we have incurred. In addition, we may, at our option, cancel the sale of the lot that you purchased while holding any payments you have made as liquidated damages. In addition, we may re-sell the items at public auction or through private sale and retain the proceeds for our account.
