LOT 2030 BERRYMAN, CLIFFORD K. EARLY 1890S ALBUM WITH CARTOON SKETCHES, BERRYMAN SIGNED CABINET CARD PHOTOGRAPH AND EPHEMERA an album of sketches, 3 cabinet card photographs, Christmas card and ephemera relating to or from the hand of Clifford K. Berryman (1869-1949). Album appears to be a gift from Clifford Berryman to his wife's sister, Hallie. While working as a draftsman in the U.S. Patent Office in Washington, D.C., Berryman sent his sketches to The Washington Post, which hired him as a cartoonist in 1891. He married Kate Geddes Durfee in 1893 and had three children, including Florence Berryman. Oblong autograph album, likely repurposed, contains 27 b/w ink caricature sketches by Clifford Berryman, including one of artist drawing with a bespectacled bear looking over his shoulder. Several sketches dated Oct. 8th and 9th, 1894, some inscribed to Hallie, some with fictitious autographs from "G. Cleveland" and "Meanderin Mike." Last page with sketch of woman holding a rolling pin with caption "Dear Hallie - This page is respectfully dedicated to my wife. C.K.B." Material includes three photo cabinet cards: one of Clifford Berryman, signed by him on reverse and dated Sept. 1895; a photo labeled "Mrs. CK Berryman, Wash. LOT 2033 CONTEMPORARY MANUSCRIPT COPY OF CIVIL WAR POLITICAL PRISONER EXCHANGE LETTER FROM ROBERT OULD TO GENERAL WINDER one page single-sided contemporary copy of letter, written in ink, sent to Confederate Brigadier General John W. Winder from Colonel Robert Ould, Confederate Agent for the Exchange of Prisoners. Winder was in charge of Southern prisonerof-war camps during the Civil War. Ould was appointed after the signing of the agreement to exchange prisoners on July 22, 1862, remaining until the war's end. The letter mentions Ould's "arrangements" so that "we get rid of miserable wretches and receive some of the best material I ever saw." This letter was presented as evidence in the trial of Henry Wirz, the Confederate commander of the notorious prisoner-of-war camp known as Andersonville. LOT 2034 1861 CIVIL WAR MANUSCRIPT LETTER FROM ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA, BANKER JOHN W. BURKE TO JOHN AUGUSTINE WASHINGTON III two-sided manuscript letter written and signed by John Woolfolk Burke (1825-1907), to John Augustine Washington III, a Confederate aide-de-camp to Gen. Robert E. Lee and the last owner of Mount Vernon. Dated "Alex. April 20, 1861," Burke outlines the military and political events taking place in the region, noting "Excitement here is very great and everybody is on tiptoe" and "There is no doubt in my mind that the North have grossly deceived themselves in calculating upon the Union men of the South to fight their Battles for them." Burke also writes that Mr. Brien's agent will "take the negroes up tomorrow," possibly a reference to removing slaves from Mount Vernon. Burke founded Burke and Herbert Bank with Arthur Herbert in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1852. John Washington deposited $200,000 in proceeds from the sale of Mount Vernon in Burke's bank and when Union forces came to take the money, Burke hid it in his home and then smuggled it to Corcoran and Riggs Bank. President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of State William H. Seward represented the interests of the United States while Vice President Alexander H. Stephens, Senator Robert M. T. Hunter and Assistant Secretary of War John A. Campbell represented the Confederate government. Undated and unsigned, the text indicates the notes were made by Stephens, who was arrested on May 11, 1865, as noted at end of letter. The author recalled that Lincoln was willing to be taxed to remunerate the Southern people for their slaves and that he "should exercise the power of the Executive with the utmost liberality" $200-400

LOT 2000 JANE C. WASHINGTON 1838 MANUSCRIPT LETTER TO SON JOHN AUGUSTINE WASHINGTON III, STUDENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA two-sided handwritten letter in black ink from Jane C. Washington (1786-1855) to her son, John Augustine Washington III (1821-1861), dated "Blakeley Sep. 9, 1838." In the letter Jane expresses concerns about her son's behavior at UVA, writing "I feel very anxious that your first associates should be formed with great circumspection and care, as they will much determine your standing and character at the University." She urges John to acquaint himself with professors as that would not only be agreeable and improving "but save you from falling into other society which would most probably be the very reverse." Jane also mentions West Ford, a manager at Mount Vernon who was born a slave to John Augustine Washington and his wife, Hannah, and freed at age 21. John was the great-grand nephew of George Washington and the last private owner of Mount Vernon. After struggling for years to make ends meet at Mount Vernon, John finally sold the mansion, outbuildings and family tomb to the Mount Vernon Ladies Association in 1858 for $200,000. A Lieutenant Colonel in the Confederate Army, John served as aide-de-camp to his relative, General Robert E. LOT 2038 MANUSCRIPT LETTER FROM ROBERT P. PRENTIS TO LORENZO LEWIS, 1845, REGARDING DISMAL SWAMP LAND OWNED BY GEORGE WASHINGTON four page letter, folded and written on two sides, from Robert R. Prentis, an attorney in Nansemond, VA, to Lorenzo Lewis, dated "Suffolk December 3rd, 1845." Lorenzo (1803-1847) was the executor of the estate of his father, Lawrence Lewis, who in turn was the executor of George Washington's estate. George Washington was a shareholder in the Great Dismal Swamp land speculation company, founded in 1763, which hoped to develop wetlands south of Norfolk, VA. Prentis discusses the difficulties of selling the land, which had little value and owners who could not agree on a course of action. Letter addressed to L. Purchases dated Jan. 11, 1826 through Sept. 28, 1826, with payment received dated Oct. 7, 1826. Items sold to Lewis include French brandy, soap, stable goods, nails and irons, "1 blank book," "salt for the Washingtons," and medicines such as laudanum, calomel and a set of scales and weights. Lawrence Lewis (17671839) was the son of George Washington's sister, Betty Washington Lewis and Fielding Lewis. He married Nelly Custis, a granddaughter of Martha Washington.
