ARTICLES Articles are any write which is between 250 350 words and is not intended as an editorial, interview or feature. Articles are by far the most numerous on the site and we like them short and candid. We encourage all members of the society to get into the habit of writing and getting heard. We are looking for as much content from Zimbabwe as we can get .
FEATURES The feature story is usually a more in depth article which will have 450 or more words. These are usually more detailed and less candid but are more likely to be thought provoking and a call to some kind of action. If you have an article that you may consider to be of relevance to the youth in Zimbabwe and Africa then feel free to contribute.

Patriotism
By Masimba Hwati
Every man everywhere is born into a place: a town, a community, a land and by reason of this is immediately attached to and assigned a portion in this territory by matter of birth. That is to say allegiance to his country is immediate and undoubted: if you are born in Germany; if born in Zimbabwe you are a Zimbabwean. You grow up with it in your bones, your blood–in its languages, its character its tones and its attitudes. Aligning yourself with its dictates, its laws, its wars and its loves. For some it is physically manifested–as with soldiers and law enforcement officers. For most it is an attitude of the heart. It is not about the government in control then (propaganda), it cannot be formed except through manipulation and coercion–but then it ceases to be patriotism and becomes only glorified oppression. It is not about self or just “The Nation” as a fanatic rolled in a Zimbabwe flag, no. But it is about a heart set towards the development, growth and improvement of his nation, and a commitment towards– in his own lifetime to contribute to the well being of a people and the betterment of his nation and society (whether on a national scale or within his sphere of influence).
Tafadzwa Tarumbwa POVO: In terms of commercial value for 2D animation what’s the industry like at the moment
At this level of discussion we discover some of the reasons why art can be therapeutic and can be a point of contact for different people in a personal way. This type of energy usually appeals to the childhood memories. My personal illustration is the old brown suitcase at our house ,when I see the same one of something like that it immediately connects to that part of my childhood back in the summer of 1992 .There are several personal events that are intimately connected to that image, the cognitive process begins. Another example is the multi coloured umbrella at our old home the first images and memories that are triggered are closely associated with a very special woman: Mai Emilia our next door neighbour who was a cross border trader and used to bring the umbrellas from South Africa. Another example is the yellow maize commonly known as ‘Kenya” to most Zimbabweans it will remind them of the drought in 1992 .This type of maize meal became very famous in this period as relief food aid.
Tafadzwa Tarumbwa: At the moment a lot of people don’t appreciate the value behind animation in general the only time when it was viable for me to be a 2D animator was when I was at MaIdeas Advertising Company. They would write a concept, once they wanted that concept presented to the client. Some clients wouldn’t understand the whole jargon on paper, so I would take that concept and interpret it and animate it in a way that they would understand. Then they would take the script and a visual aid in the form of the animation. That’s the only time it was commercially viable.

Responsibility
Music piracy in Zimbabwe
By Baynham Goredema
Elton Mjanana
After understanding the position of God, I realised that all creatives must know and believe in God and Creation, not evolution. The whole universe, the world, the human body, the structure and function of a leaf, the unity of ants. All these cannot be attributed to chance and have come from nowhere(Big Bang!) But all give full testimony of a powerful mind behind the creation of the whole universe, its whole design, order, function and purpose. We are not here by mere coincidence, but by purpose hence we have a purpose to fulfil. God Created us in his own image, hence man by nature is creative, and has the capacity and ability to keep the order instituted by God. As we grow and succumb to various influences, adhere to the status quo, we are moulded away from the true essence of the being created by God. Therefore we lose the creative instinct necessary to maintain order in the world. We refuse and become reluctant to carry the great responsibility that comes with the creative process.
Good quality ensures that the masses are being incentivised to lure them back to buying music – original music that is. Imagine two CD’s that will last two weeks for a dollar, how about one genuine CD that will last a life time at US$5? Pimping up the sleeve with fancy and creative artwork, a booklet with info that includes lyrics and interpretations will make the album something to savour. People love the simple things in life. Even if its sung in their language – which they understand – they still cherish the lyrics and hold the booklet up singing along to the lyrics. It gives the CD some sentimental value – for a life time. All the more reason it should cost US$5 instead of US$1 for two. ‘Pirates’ cannot afford to ‘pimp up’ the CD, and hence they cannot sell it, or them, for any price above US$1. That imagery and product value separates the men from the boys, the genuine from the fake. Maybe the argument is that record companies and independent artists should produce something SIMPLE i.e. don’t do fancy packaging, don’t do the booklet with the lyrics etc, instead just do the disc and put it in a simple disc holder and sell for the same US$1.

“Zvibhombo/Zvitsvinyo” from way back whereby you would have verbal battles with an opponent and the person who ran out of “Zvibhombo/Zvitsvinyo” first would be beaten. People would usually declare war when they had a COUPLE of really good ones. Sometimes these verbal battles due to jeering supporters would degenerate into fist fights.
Animals and Superstition Unfortunately many people in Zimbabwe (I cant speak for the rest of the world) fear and loathe owls and are said to be messengers of witches, and used to fly witches to various places in the middle of the night. And having an owl come and land on top of your house is a bad omen.

It is an unequivocal fact that Zimbabwean producers endeavour to up the standards television production on Zimbabwean tele and why not, for one we have many stori By Tamuka Mtengwa The standard set by Safirio Madzikatire has so far been difficult to realise, even with the basic sets and story lines established. Without a doubt The Mukadota Family had more viewership than popular 80s television series like “The A Team” and “Knight Rider” which proves that managed well, Zimbabwe’s television has great potential. Of cause commercial viability is the most import important aspect to consider. The greatest Zimbabwean talent is drawn to the most lucrative pursuits. The ushering in of more players in
Emerging writer/director, Zimbabwean Karien Cherry is raising the bar for student filmmakers as she casts the spotlight on the familiar reality of the Zimbabwean refugee influx. She talks to Cecile Murray-Louw about why her Honours year short film, “I Am Abel”, is not just another barefoot-over-theborder account. AFDA proudly presents a BA (Hons) production; ´I Am Abel´, a 24-minute drama adventure inspired by the incredible true stories of the journey made by so many Zimbabwean refugees into South Africa.

the field of television broadcasting will create the competition needed to come up with worthwhile projects. The promulgation of an increased local content out put of 75% in our case television production might have been ambitious but possible if the right factors were in place: With several television stations bound to produce high levels of local content this would establish a competitive television industry. Television programmes which attract the highest level of advertising will essentially be better rewarded than those

has always been a collective story. But each Zimbabwean crossing the border has their own story, and it is this that I wanted to make very real and personal.
KC: Obviously being a Zimbabwean, the subject of refugees fleeing economic hardship and seeking a better life in South Africa is close to home, yet I feel it is a subject that is both unexplored and over explored. It’s an issue a lot of people are aware of and have heard of before, but I don’t feel that those stories have been represented in an honest, intimate way. People may feel “Shame, the poor Zimbabwean refugees”, but really not care as it does not affect them. It
C M-L: Does xenophobia play a role in the film? KC: The fear of foreigners is obviously relevant in a social context at the moment but the film is not about xenophobia. It’s about another human being’s journey. No matter who we are or where we come from we can learn from each other’s stories.

which do not stimulate the public interest , creating a platform where mediocrity will be regulated. Institutions that provide the technical know how –would either re-invent themselves or emerge, providing relevant instruction in the key areas of Entertainment technology. Cultural products could be exported and realise greater growth for the industry leading to job creation and other industrial spin offs.
There is folly in following the Hollywood or any other television or film production model. Zimbabwe has many stories to tell, with material available from its past and present. And future. South Africa has advanced film production capabilities and its technical experts are considered to be some of the best in the world. They are however blighted by the fact that their local productions are struggling to grasp the depth of South African culture and at the same time largely ignored
as a result of vested interests in the Hollywood narrative. Film and television is big business and as such must be favourably considered as it has significant economic and cultural potential.

TOMORROW IS RIGHT NOW
The only way we can truly retain our identity or even remember what it is, is to continuously share it. There
is something distinctly unreal about Africa as i drive to work these days. Tall, lifeless, cold, glaring pillars that poke at the sky like scorned fingers. The way concrete blocks form in clusters like fields and orchards, and people have become smaller and smaller. There are growing scenes from tv shows I used to watch as a child that repeat themselves in my day now like I have moved to the places whose names I used to look up in an atlas book. Somehow we figured that becoming like other people, inheriting their culture and beliefs is the best way to measure progress. I wonder at difference between Johannesburg and downtown Brooklyn, or if a stranger can decipher our values by reading our magazines or watching our television. While doing research for a clothing brand I am developing, a few questions constantly came up. What is Africa, what is the image of Africa? Where is its heritage? If we are what we feed our minds, what is it that I would like to feed these minds that ‘eat, pray and love’ with me. Are we even the ones feeding our minds? If not us, who? What are the right images, thoughts and desires to feed into? Is there anything particularly African anymore? I have stopped watching Nigerian movies as a whole, for one reason. For all the power that medium carries, for all that can be done, is that all that they can do? Is that all we have to tell the world and each other? If we are what we see, then what are we seeing, and through whose eyes? Perhaps the biggest failure by artists in Africa is in not recognising that today, right here, right now, is important in the history of Africa and Africans as was the day Mandela got out of prison, or the day the Conical Tower at the great Zimbabwe was erected (yes research it) or when scholars at Timbuktu wrote their first scrolls or the day that the first slave was shipped off. We fail to realise that our actions are just as iconic as the Egyptian hieroglyphics, that the way we dress, the habits we culturize are as much of history as was any part of our past that we use to identify ourselves. We are the history that the future will read with laughter, tears, regret and anger just as we do now.

Being a Designer and Art Director, one of the hardest things for me has been to design with Africa in mind, to constantly try and remember what that is, to be aware that I am creating and recording history. That from this people will form values, opinions, lifestyles and cultures. We are story tellers, whether we accept it or not. The sooner we harness the power we have, the better. People are always listening to stories, if not ours then someone else’s. A viral YouTube video shows an African American pastor claiming that black people are not worthy of ruling anything and ruin everything they are in charge of. In one of his many misinformed statements he claims that Africa and the West Indies are worse off under black rulership; crime, war, political melt-downs being obvious reasons. It is when he claims that Africa historically never built a monument worth remembering, that i took notice of a bigger problem. Intelligence founded on false information is disastrous. When people find and listen to stories, as with all things in life, they start retelling them, even those that are not a true representation of what has occurred. We have left it to everyone else to educate people about our stories, while we remain silent or are in it just to entertain. Being ignorant of the face or image we are broadcasting of ourselves does not stop people from forming an opinion of us. Perhaps it is important to think of art, as a continuous conversation, rather than a set of skills people gather for themselves. To think of one self as a story teller, just like how our forefathers taught and were taught, by stories. The tools may have advanced, the artist may have changed, but the conversation should remain simple, and continuous, should be engaging and self reflecting. The only way we can truly retain our identity or even remember what it is, is to contentiously share it. At the end of my life, certainly as a designer, I hope people can look back, I hope I can look back and say I have told a story, more importantly that I know what that story is. Whereas art in the western world has played a huge part in educating, and establishing a people’s propaganda and identity, in Africa

and in the West Indies much of our art has been for entertaining and leisure, period. We take for granted the impact and importance of imagery, literature, and the message we export. A good example is how western films have an impact on social and moral values globally. A few Art Directors in Hollywood can change whole cultures and dictate the pace of that change, by understanding and embracing the fact that they are storytellers, and that people love to listen to stories, we are what we feed our minds. Being homosexual went from being taboo to being a human right, being educated became less important to having money, being popular even for a while is better than being talented. What we didn’t and to some extent still do not realise is the power of advertising, (yes its all storytelling and it works).
Somewhere along the line we need to remember the face we are wearing today, and what story it is telling. We need be aware of the significance of our actions on future history and we need to remain conscious of the fact that we are making history everyday and that we will be remembered, not for what we intended to be, or the stories we wanted to tell, but for what we did say, or failed to say. What is Africa? What does it mean to be African? What image of it do you portray? *

One Mediator
Tendai Maraire, the multi-instrumentalist one half of Alternative Hip Hop band Shabazz Palaces, is the eldest son of Zimbabwean mbira legend Dumisani. Mararire comes from a family of famous musicians including LA rapper Just Lyphe and mbira queen Chiwoniso Mararire.
On the 22nd February 2008, JAAG members from Zimbabwe met for the first time and began to work towards the development of the local animation industry. The inaugural meeting was attended by over 30 individuals comprised of animators, visual effects artists and students. A steering committee of volunteers that included, Claire Dongo, Shingai Mtezo, Marvel Banda, Carl Ncube, Nqobizitha Mlilo and Solomon Maramba was formed and they began planning and organising outreach activities.

The curtain came down on the Arts Lab show this weekend and theatre lovers had a rare opportunity of pleasure as they could repeatedly watch the show on Friday the 2nd of December from the serene venue of the Zimbabwe College of Music and then again in the context of World AIDS Day celebrations at the Flame festival at Joina City on Saturday the 3rd of December and to end the weekend with class on Sunday the 4th at Girls High. The cast included quite a number of interesting personalities from amateursturned-into professionals over the last six weeks of pre-show training to
renowned icons like John Lenon Pfumojena of the music band Mnandi, Edith Katiji of Edith WeUtonga, Tinevimbo Chimbetete who gained fame as Kidznet presenter in the early 2000s and all these theatrical performers fused together by heartrending professional dance choreographed by the renowned Artistic Director and choreographer Gilbert Douglas and presented by the Tumbuka Dance Company. The 2 hrs with 20 mins wine drinking break show was quite an awe leaving the audience glued to their seats and taking them to worlds unknown as it addressed in mime, text, vivid action and
spectacular costumes real life situations from the tense environment of people watching a match, to the dynamics of today’s church service, a funeral, an NGO meeting, A murderous marriage, Doctors at work, a fashion show, a portrayal of Swaziland riches to the displays of films shortened to 8 minutes theatre pieces. For some the climax was when characters were portrayed in masks and for some the highlight was the drastic shift of personality from happy fun filled to intense, serious moments and back again. There was a lot of educating fun filled entertainment it was very difficult to have a favourite piece of the whole scene.
That thou mayest know how men ought to behave themselves in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 1 Timothy 3 vs 14-15

The One Man Show Having good communication skills and an even better understanding of design will enable you to sell your ideas without being pushed around by bossy clients. Becoming a one man show has it’s advantages and disadvantages. Often a freelancer ends up doing work that would usually take about four people to do, however it does give a sense of appreciation for the small guys like the messenger who is invisible in a company. On the other hand the biggest perk that comes with the job is not a big company car but time. Yeah, all this time to learn things that a hectic studio setup does not allow. Try learning to use the gradient mesh tool in illustrator with all those job bags sitting under a desk. It is so important to get that free time to restructure the way you work and think , even if it’s just by playing a game of Demos Rising. Deciding to go freelance takes a great deal of courage and honesty. It’s something that you choose to do not for money, but rather because you’re fed up with being a commercial designer who isn’t developing creatively. The honesty bit comes in when assessing your abilities, in which case it’s an advantage to be an all rounder. Equipment can be a difficult one to get around especially in this part of the world because of prohibitive costs. Best way to solve that problem would be to work for someone and use their equipment at night till you’ve saved up enough to buy your own, Just don’t get caught or you may loose your job.
