Welcome to logger sports
I
t is our pleasure to welcome both visitors and competitors down to the Loggers Bowl at Willingdon Beach to watch the 2019 Powell River Logger Sports event. This event is just one way that we are able to share BC’s coastal forest culture - our heritage, and our current industry. All ages can participate, which features world-class athleticism, family-friendly entertainment, food and much more. This year’s event is the result of many hard hours of work and preparation from our board as well as hundreds of volunteers. Without the support of our community and our sponsors we would not be able to host such a remarkable event. We sincerely thank all those involved! We hope you enjoy the event this year and our vibrant beautiful community and that you take home many great memories. We look forward to seeing you there and hearing you cheer! Three things to know about what you’re about to see: 1. All events are sanctioned
by the Canadian Logge r Sports Association (CANLOG), the governing and regulatory body for most events held in BC.
2. Contestants participate in

Springboard: two-board & four-board Open four-board Canadian Championship
Equipment
Metal-tipped wooden boards, axe.
Skills
Strength, balance, accuracy, fearlessness.
This is how you do it
Intermediate class - cut two springboard holes one on top of the other. Put the boards in, and climb on the top one. Chop halfway through the tree, turn 180 degrees, and chop through the remainder. The clock stops when the chopped block hits the ground. Open class - cut two holes as in intermediate class. Insert boards, chop halfway through the tree. Climb down, repeat on the other side of the tree, and chop through until the block hits the ground.
Items of interest
In the early days of logging, fallers worked in teams of two and used axes and crosscut saws. To cut down on the time it took to fall a large tree, they started their cuts in the straight part of the tree, above the swell of the butt. To reach that height, they chopped notches in the tree and inserted springboards. The name ‘springboard’ came about because the boards act like springs and can help a faller drive his axe harder into a cut. In this event, it’s vital to cut perfect springboard holes. A pro can cut his hole with four swings of his axe.

1. What’s your personal background in forestry? I have worked in the forest industry: as a Ministry of Forests firefighter in the Merritt and Princeton Fire Districts in the early 1980’s, and as a labourer at Weyerhaeuser Canada in Princeton. Also, I have taken courses in Forest Resource Management at UBC. 2. What’s your background with museums? I have worked in the museology field since the early 1990’s having managed museums including: the community museum in Port Hardy; the logging museum in Port McNeill; the train station museum in Port Moody; and the cultural centre in Nain, Labrador (in the Arctic). 3. Why do you think so few British Columbians are aware of their forestry heritage? Actually, I think most BC’ers know a lot about their forestry heritage. According to one of my profs at UBC, BC’ers wouldn’t have had such a wealth of hospitals, schools, roadways and bridges, and so forth, if it hadn’t been for the forest industry.
Who’s keeping our forestry heritage alive?
F
ive years ago, the Powell River Historical Forestry Society transferred management of the Forestr y Museum and ownership of its archival and artifact col lections to the Powel l R iver Museum Historical & Archives Association. On June 3rd of this year, Derek Kowalchuk (left) took the reins Powell River Museum Historical & Archives as Heritage Manager.

Shooting Loggers “When Jeff called me about this job, I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into.”
30 • Your Guide to Logger Sports 2019
That’s the voice of Bryce Adams, on a video he made for Jeff Coburn’s Powell River falling company, Edgehill Timber. In the promotional film - find it on Facebook - Bryce follows Edgehill’s crew as they fall trees deep and steep in the local backcountry. “I’ve worked for a tree service company before, and that really helped when I went to put this film together,” said the father-ofthree. “I knew what I wanted to film, and where to be.” Still, it was an intense day following the crew over the slash, with a camera pack on his back. The Edgehill Timber video is loaded with sweeping local scenes you’d rarely get to see if you’re not a logger, many of them captured using a drone. It’s the same drone you will see flying around the Logger’s Memorial Amphitheatre during Logger Sports, as Bryce’s company, One5 Films, is shooting the event. He’ll release a video about the Logger Sports in the next couple of weeks. Bryce is neither a logger nor a trained videographer. One5 is a business he stumbled in to a few years ago, after he hurt his arm working at Adams Concrete - his dad’s company. Bryce has been off work since then, enduring several surgeries, some unsuccessful, reconstructing his wrist. In fact, recently, Bryce was watching Dr. Phil while he was recovering from a surgery in hospital in Vancouver. He was shocked when one of his own commercials came on the TV - for Powell River’s Sunshine Coast Treatment Centre. You’ve likely seen his social media-friendly work on Facebook. That’s where you’ll find videos he shot for Laszlo Tamasik Dance Studio, Born to Be Ozz (starring another logger: Jeff Koopman), Dox Auto, and many others. He also shoots real estate and wedding videos, commercials and more. “I love it but it’s really time-consuming. It’s not an eight-hour day. I’m often up til 2am editing and getting the video done.” With Sam Sansalone from Powell River Outdoors, Bryce just completed shooting a film about the impact of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ chinook decision. He’s a busy boy. The lesson here? If you want a film made, hire him while you can.
