Color Security Camera vs. Black and White Security Camera: Part 2 Let’s talk about why black and white surveillance cameras are still popular on the video surveillance market. Of course, they are in demand because of their price. The black and white camera costs less than the color camera. This is because black and white security cameras are easier and cheaper to manufacture. Lower price is the thing that makes these cameras attractive for the customers. From a technical perspective, black and white surveillance cameras have a higher resolution compared to the color. The reason for this is their work principles. Color security cameras needs to pick up three primary colors: red, green and blue, while the black and white security camera works only with gray scale. This means that the color camera uses more CCD sensor resources because it has to pick up the color information but black and white camera CCD sensor is fully utilized to make an image. Black and white surveillance cameras also produce brighter images in low-light situations. Of course, you can find high-quality color cameras that have a higher resolution and produce brighter images in low-light situations. However, don’t forget the main advantage of black and white security cameras – lower cost. If you have a limited budget you should look for the black and white security camera first. Nowadays many high quality color cameras have both the color and the black and white mode. They have special built-in circuits that can sense the ambient light levels and thanks to them color surveillance cameras can switch over to black and white viewing when the ambient light levels diminish below a certain point. Once again, however, these types of color cameras are more expensive.
