John Lennon's Death- December 8
John Lennon was an English musician who got worldwide popularity as one of the founders of The Beatles, for his subsequent solo career, and for his political activities. This great musician was shot by Mark David Chapman at the entrance of his home in New York City, on Monday, December 8, 1980 when he was coming back from Record Plant Studio with his wife, Yoko Ono. Lennon was proclaimed dead on arrival at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, where doctors stated that nobody could have lived for more than a couple of minutes after sustaining such injuries. Soon after local news stations reported about John Lennon's death, crowds gathered at Roosevelt Hospital and in front of The Dakota. He was cremated on December 10, 1980, and his ashes were given to Yoko Ono. Ono begged the hospital not to report that Lennon was dead until she had a chance to inform their son, who was at home at the time. At the same time this was happening, a reporter from ABC's New York affiliate, Alan Weiss, was in Roosevelt Hospital following a motorcycle accident and confirmed that Lennon was dead. His confirmation was overheard by Howard Cosell, Fran Tarkenton, and Frank Gifford, who were calling a game between the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. In a brief conversation amongst themselves they finally decided to make the following announcement:
"Yes, we have to say it. Remember this is just a football game, no matter who wins or loses. An unspeakable tragedy confirmed to us by ABC News in New York City: John Lennon, outside of his apartment building on the West Side of New York City, the most famous, perhaps, of all of The Beatles, shot twice in the back, rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, dead on arrival. Hard to go back to the game after that news flash, which in duty bound, we have to make." The following day, Ono stated: "There is no funeral for John. John loved and prayed for the human race. Please do the same for him. Love, Yoko and Sean." After this event, it became impossible to see the old Beatles on the stage, but despite the passing time we still have a possibility to enjoy their music, videos, clips, brilliant movies about the band and even different shows based on the Beatles music and John Lennon’s world view.
