Call of Duty: World at War Review Just when you thought that the pinnacle of shooter war video games was reached with last year’s hit Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Activision’s newest offering, Call of Duty 5: World at War, proves that pinnacles can always be surpassed. After COD 4 brought modern-day warfare and advanced weaponry to the gameplay experience, the thought of ever playing another World War 2 game seemed unimaginable. Thankfully, Call of Duty: World at War retains everything great about its predecessor while adding superior World War 2 gameplay that’s both engaging and compelling. Call of Duty: World at War puts players into the roles of an American Marine as he takes on the Imperial Japanese army and a Soviet soldier during a massive Allied surge into Nazi Germany. Voices of renowned actors Kiefer Sutherland and Gary Oldman deliver dramatic orders to you and guide you through the games most ferocious battles. The most memorable moments in the game are during the American marine’s campaign in the Pacific against the crafty Japanese Imperial soldiers. The realistic settings amidst the sandy blood-stained shores and the haunting thick jungles create an exhilarating rush of fear and excitement. The enemy artificial intelligence is great; they will throw back your grenades towards you and bum-rush you when you think you’re in a safe zone. The game, however, brings a disturbing level of violence and brutality with the use of the flamethrower weapon that scorches the enemy to smithereens as they scream to their death -- It’s no wonder the weapon was outlawed by international war committees. There are also multiplayer and cooperative modes that allow you to play alongside a friend or with up to four players on a split-screen. Some might find that Call of Duty 5: World at war is just a re-hashing of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, only, with the World War 2 theme. Some might be tired of World War 2 games and will shun the game as a result. I am here to tell you that Call of Duty 5: World at War is a must have game for the season. Go out and get it and experience World War 2 like you’ve never seen it before. - By Brent Lowe
