JANKEL ADLER EXHIBITION
The first major Jankel adler show in decades. Private View Saturday 17th May. Talk by richard Cork. 100 paintings and drawings. ÂŁ1000 to ÂŁ150,000. An exhibition devoted to Jankel Adler's achievement is long overdue. I am delighted that a show focusing on his final period in Britain, where he reached full maturity as an artist, has now arrived. This study, painted in the 1960s, was used for the East Window of the Chapel of St. John's Hospital, Lichfield and replaced the plain quarry glass which had been used during the Chapel's restoration in 1870. The subject of this design is Christ in Majesty, surrounded by symbols of the four Evangelists.
4.
Piper himself wrote about its derivation: 'The character of the design is influenced by a number of drawings and paintings I made of Romanesque sculptures in the Dordogne and Saintonge areas of Western France, on many visits between 1955-1975.’

This work appears on page 45 of the second volume (of three) of sketches the artist produced during the last few years of WW2. It is the first of 5 drawings to include images of his then exwife Hilda (who he divorced in 1937), himself and their children, drawings he referred to as ‘very important items in the book.’ After her untimely death in 1950, Spencer returned to creating images of Hilda in a series of large scale paintings known as the Resurrection series, scenes in which this work closely relates. Provenance: The Astor Collection Sketchbook [vol.2, no.45]. William Weston Gallery, London, Private Collection, United Kingdom (acquired directly from the above in the 1980s). Exhibited: London, Thomas Gibson Fine Art, 1976. New York, C.D.S Gallery, 1983. Literature: Carolyn Leder, Stanley Spencer: The Astor Collection Sketchbook, Thomas Gibson Publishing, London, 1976 [p.69, no.73].

16 | IVON HITCHENS
Following a chance encounter, Ted Floate, a woodcutter, and Ivon Hitchens became close companions until the artist’s death in 1979. Ted worked for Hitchens on the artist’s estate and also helped with framing of the paintings and even technical advice. Hitchens regularly gave his friend paintings and drawings, which even in those days was a considerable gift, filling Ted’s cottage with an amazing collection of Modern British Romantic art. At 85, Ted entrusted the selling of these paintings to the Goldmark Gallery.
Ivon Hitchens was born in London in 1893, the son of the painter Alfred Hitchens. He is widely regarded as the outstanding English landscape painter of the 20th century. Immediately recognizable by its daring yet subtle use of colour and brushmark to evoke the spirit of place, his work is to be found in public and private collections throughout the world.
Hitchens studied art at the Royal Academy and was taught by John Singer Sargent and William Orpen. Later notable influences were the French Post-Impressionists Cezanne, Braque and Matisse. He was a member of the 7 & 5 Society and the London Group. He represented Britain at the 1956 Venice Biennale and created CBE in 1958. He died in 1976.

The Bees Suite is a series of aquatints conceived and produced between October 1976 and May 1977. They were printed in the 2RC Studio in Rome under the supervision of Eleonora and Valter Rossi and were published by Marlborough Fine Art Ltd and 2RC Editrice. The main edition of 66 contains 12 prints. Image size is 40 x 31.5 cm.
Sutherland became fascinated by aquatint from the moment we proposed it to him. The artist approached the medium with curiosity and excitement; he tested it fully in order to evaluate its application to his own pictorial idiom. His past experience as an etcher helped him to appreciate a vital and innovative technique. This he approached with modesty: from the very first proofs of the Bees series, we were able to achieve fascinating results. As Sutherland began to master the medium everything started to fall into place; line gave vigour; colour glowed with light by absorbing and reflecting it; blacks became alive. This newly acquired extension to his graphic experiences introduces us to the mysterious realm of Bees. Eleonora and Valter Rossi

30 | BEN NICHOLSON
Here is a real collector’s item which we have just acquired from the son of Nicholson’s original publisher. It has been in their family since 1939. A unique proof print with hand drawn circle by the artist.
It was the proof for the small edition of 60 published in 1939 in which the circle was printed. Not to be confused with a later offset lithograph which was part of the ‘Penwith Portfolio’.
An extremely scarce Nicholson lithograph, it is unique in that it has been worked on by the artist – the circle in the lithograph is drawn in pencil by Nicholson.
It has been professionally framed according to Nicholson’s framing instructions and has a perfect provenance.

PATRICK CAULFIELD | 41
In the late 1960s Caulfield was invited to make a limited edition book published by Petersburg Press. His chosen subject was the poetry of Jules Laforgue (18601887) which he first encountered and admired as a student.

Caulfield produced a series of 22 screenprints for 12 poems and observed that: ‘They are not illustrations but complementary images. There are few visually descriptive lines in Laforgue. The images suggest the things I have imagined the poet seeing when he wrote the poem…’ Laforgue’s poems, simultaneously full of despair and wonderfully cynical humour, find their counterpart in Caulfield’s crisp and melancholic imagery.
