Cecil Collins Cecil Collins was born in Plymouth in 1908. He studied at the Royal College of Art in

London. In the 1930s Collins was influenced by several contemporary artists including

Picasso, Paul Klee and some of the Surrealists. By the late ‘30s Collins was developing his own highly individualistic style of Neo-

Romanticism, encompassing visionary and

mystical elements and his growing interest in Far Eastern Art and philosophy – recurring

motifs being the Fool, the Angel and the Soul.

Collins was awarded the M.B.E. in 1979 and

the Tate Gallery held a retrospective of his

prints in 1981 followed by one of his paintings

in 1989. Patrick Reyntiens described him as

the most important metaphysical artist to

have emerged in England since William Blake.

He died in 1989.
