OCTOBER 2014
In memory of Andrzej Kuhn 1929-2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the death last week of gallery artist, Andrzej Kuhn. His paintings, deceptively naive yet highly sophisticated, have brought warmth and comfort. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Ceri Richards (1903-1971) is acknowledged as Wales’ most important
artist of the mid-twentieth century. He won a scholarship to the Royal
College of Art and went on to exhibit alongside Henry Moore, Ben
Nicholson, John Piper and Graham Sutherland. The lyrebird was a motif
that Richards returned to time and time again throughout his career.

16 | EDUARDO PAOLOZZI
A rare opportunity to purchase a substantial and iconic work by Eduardo Paolozzi. Whilst sculpture, collages and prints by Paolozzi are fairly readily available it is unusual to find his painted work. During the 1970s and ‘80s London Regional Transport were modernising stations on the Underground system and as part of this scheme they commissioned the artist Eduardo Paolozzi to design mosaics to decorate Tottenham Court Road Station. Paolozzi said that when accepting the commission he thought always of the people
who use the Tube ... Will people relate to the metaphors I sought in connection with life above ground? The eminent art critic Richard Cork considered the mosaics a tour-de-force whilst the artist Roger de Grey said of the scheme ... it does indeed constitute a remarkable event in the development in public art in this country.

The edition size is unknown although it is believed very few were ever produced, there were also variations in the colours.
The scarcest is by Peter Lanyon who only ever made a few prints.

46 | ROBIN TANNER
Studies for this print began in 1974 at a time when the Dutch elm
disease was considerably advanced.
The plate is not only a lament for the
English elm, but also a celebration of Traherne’s line, ‘Everything was
at rest, free and immortal.’ The
gateway overgrown with dog-roses is
similar to that used in Martin’s
Hovel (No 3) and the milestone is from one at Sutton Benger.

Tanner etched this plate to
commemorate the old ways of
hay-making remembered from
his childhood. The setting is the valley of Woodford Brake near the cobbled ford across
Broadmead Brook which runs
between Nettleton and Castle Combe.
