Although the post-war decade after 1945 is often perceived, in many ways, as an era of greyness and rationing there was, nevertheless, a spirit of optimism and buoyancy within the arts and sciences which perhaps reached its zenith at the 1951 Festival of Britain. One of the clearest manifestations of this creative optimism was the setting up of School Prints Ltd by Brenda Rawnsley with the idea of commissioning talented artists to produce original lithographs in large editions

so that they could be sold cheaply to schools. In keeping with the optimism and enthusiasm of the School Prints scheme the colours of the lithographs were usually bright and cheerful. The initial series of 24 prints, which included work by artists such as John Nash, Michael Rothenstein and Julian Trevelyan, proved so popular that Brenda Rawnsley was encouraged to approach half a dozen of the great European masters, all of whom readily contributed an image for another series. The Henry Moore print offered here is from this European series.

For Henry Moore's masterly contribution to the School Prints project, the image was drawn directly by the artist on to plastic plates – then newly developed by Cowells of Ipswich – and proofed under his supervision. . . . this print was one of Moore's earliest graphics and it remains one of his best.
