Pablo Picasso as Printmaker In 1919 Picasso began making lithographs and during the next half century is known to have made about 855 prints in the medium. His early lithographs were often made using transfer drawings as opposed to being worked directly on a plate. In later years he worked in collaboration with a few highly skilled art printers, especially the renowned Mourlot Frères of Paris, where he developed various techniques to demonstrate the rich tonal qualities available through lithography. Overall the diversity and range of Picasso’s prints was bewildering and he was undoubtedly one of the finest printmakers of any period.

Dans l’Atelier de Picasso The suite of lithographs for Dans l’Atelier de Picasso was inspired by Jaime Sabartés (18811968), a Catalan artist, poet and writer, who was a friend of Picasso from his early days in Barcelona. He became the artist’s secretary in 1935, remaining with him for 30 years. Dans l’Atelier de Picasso was printed and published by Fernand Mourlot in 1957. The standard edition was limited to 275 copies and contains 6 original lithographs. The suite offered here is a deluxe set of just 50 copies, which also contains 7 additional lithographs. They are printed on Hodomura japan paper. In addition to the 13 lithographs, there are lithographic interpretations of paintings, collages and drawings made by Picasso between 1914 and 1948 (after Picasso).
