Wifredo Lam 1902-1982

Although of mixed Chinese and African ancestry Wifredo Lam was born in Cuba. During his Catholic upbringing he was exposed to aspects of African sorcery and spiritual practices which were to subsequently influence his artistic output. From 1918-23 he studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Havana before moving to Spain where he remained for fourteen years. In 1938 the Civil War forced Lam to leave Spain and he settled in Paris, where Picasso took him under his wing and encouraged his interest in African art and primitive masks. He immersed himself in Surrealism becoming acquainted with Max Ernst, AndrÊ Masson and Yves Tanguy. With increasing German control over France during the Second World War, Lam returned to the Caribbean, living in both Cuba and Haiti over the next decade. There he renewed his interest in Afro-Cuban traditions. I wanted with all my heart to paint the drama of my country [Cuba], but by thoroughly expressing the negro spirit, the beauty of the plastic art of the blacks. In this way I could act as a Trojan horse that would spew forth hallucinating figures with the power to surprise, to disturb the dreams of the exploiters. Around 1942-43 Lam painted perhaps his most famous work, The Jungle now in the MoMA, New York. He held his first important solo exhibitions in 1939 in Paris and New York and after the war, exhibited regularly in America and Europe. Following the Cuban Revolution in 1959 he produced art in support of Fidel Castro’s government, perhaps most notably a fresco entitled Third World for the presidential palace in Havana. In 1964 he was awarded the Guggenheim International Award which was followed by major retrospectives in Europe and USA.
