The Powhatan County Board of Supervisors took time during last Monday’s meeting to thank those who responded in March to what has been described as one of the worst traffic disasters in the county’s history. Powhatan Fire Chief Rick Bucher read a proclamation honoring the fire, rescue and law enforcement teams who responded in the early morning hours of March 27 after a dump truck reportedly crossed the center line and collided with a logging truck just west of the intersection of Bell Road and Route 60. Once on the scene, responders were confronted with a horrific scene, including vehicles engulfed in flames, and a path ahead chocked with logs and other debris. According to the proclamation, rescue workers were only able to locate the first victim “by following the sound of his screams.” The responders “saved lives and preserved the sanctity of the deceased,” Bucher continued, and their dedication and professionalism is something all of Powhatan can be proud of. The proclamation was issued directly after the board had recognized all county fire and rescue personnel for their service, in conjunction with Volunteer Week.

pit County pit bull enthusiasts say dogs don’t deserve reputation as dangerous animals
Chris and Nicole Jones, a young Powhatan couple, have known since they were first married that they’d like to get a pit bull. Several of their relatives own pits and they’d always thought of them as good and obedient dogs and, contrary to public perception, as dogs that are particularly good with children. “They do have a bad rap,” Nicole said, “but they’re awesome dogs. They’re super obedient. They’re gentle with kids. And they’re very smart.” On Saturday the Joneses and their 6month old pit bull, Jax, joined several other area pit owners outside Tractor Supply for a training class provided by see Dogs page 3A
