Powhatan County residents have been trusting the Gregg family with their medications for 38 years and during that time a strong bond has developed between the Greggs and their customers. Jim Gregg and his wife Carol bought Bloxton’s Pharmacy in the Courthouse Village in 1975 and changed the name to Powhatan

Pharmacy. Ten years later, the couple moved the drug store to Flat Rock. In 2004, they moved to their current location in the South Creek Shopping Center off U.S. 60. Along the way, they opened a second store further west on U.S. 60 – Plaza Pharmacy – and also operate Amelia Pharmacy and Cumberland Pharmacy. When she and her husband opened Powhatan Pharmacy in

New arrangement with Lacheney saves county thousands By Ben Orcutt News Editor

Powhatan’s new arrangement with County Attorney Thomas E. Lacheney will save taxpayers about $50,000 annually, according to county officials. Last week, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve a new salary arrangement with Lacheney. “Well the only thing we changed is, I am no longer a county employee,” Lacheney said. “I’m actually on contract, on a retainer contract. That’s reLacheney ally the only change we made. So I don’t get county benefits anymore and I don’t get health insurance and all that. So that’s all they really see Lacheney page 4A

Supervisors honor Maxey for service By Ben Orcutt News Editor

Former Powhatan County Circuit Court Clerk William E. Maxey Jr. was honored by the Board of Supervisors last week for his decades of service. The Board voted unanimously to adopt a proclamation honoring Maxey, who retired in September after serving as Circuit Court Clerk for 56 years and three months. In reading the proclamation, Supervisors Chairman Barry C. Hodge noted that Maxey Maxey was appointed as clerk on July 1, 1957, by Judge J. Garland Jefferson to complete an unexpired term. Following completion of the unexpired term, Maxey was elected to seven eight-year terms as Circuit Court Clerk and was six years into his seventh term upon his retirement. Maxey was the longest-serving clerk in state history and is Past President of the Virginia Court Clerks’ Association. In 2006, the Supreme Court of Virginia honored Maxey with its Outstanding Career Service Award, Hodge said. In addition to being Circuit Court Clerk, Maxey also served the county in a number of different roles, Hodge said. Maxey was the Board of Supervisors clerk, Commissioner of the Revenue, Director of Civil Defense, Chairman of the Planning Commission, Electoral Board Secretary and Justice of the Peace. Maxey also was a leader in the community, Hodge added. A member of American Legion Post 201, Maxey also served as post commander. Maxey is a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10570 and was Director of the Bank of Powhatan. “Whereas Mr. Maxey has elected to see Maxey page 4A

VISTA program promotes learning everywhere By Ben Orcutt News Editor

For about 85 pupils at Pocahontas Elementary School, significant learning is occurring both inside and outside of the building through a program called VISTA – Virginia Initiative for Science Teaching and Achievement. Barbara Adcock and Debbie Putney are Science, Technology, Engineering and Math or STEM teachers at Pocahontas Elementary who teach third and fourth-grade pupils who are part of the VISTA program. Virginia wildlife conﬂict helpline is now available Contributed Report The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is pleased to announce a new Virginia Wildlife Conflict Helpline – a resource for resolving human-wildlife conflicts. The helpline is a collaborative effort between the VDGIF and the U.S. Department of Agriculture – Wildlife Services (WS) to address human-wildlife interactions by sharing science-based wildlife information. The helpline is available toll-free at (855) 571-9003 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Techniques recommended to the public are environmentally sound, safe, and selective and meet wildlife professionals’ standards. Individuals are helped with “do-it-yourself” instructions and are provided with the necessary information and literature, referred to websites when appropriate, or directed to other sources of assistance. In those instances where more specific technical assistance is needed, callers are linked up with subject matter experts. Helpline activities are conducted in cooperation with VDGIF in accordance with WS Policy Guidelines and federal, state, and county laws, regulations and policies. The Farm Bureau of Virginia, Virginia State University and Virginia Tech Extension are partners assisting in the development of outreach and educational materials from information and data gathered from the helpline.

Wreath making workshop at public library Dec. 3 Contributed Report A wreath making workshop is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the Powhatan Public Library. Krista Weatherford, Powhatan State Park Interpreter, will demonstrate how to make a wreath using natural materials. Fresh cut greens, grapevine wreaths, wires, and ribbon will be supplied. Premiere Dance Studio is performing its annual Winter Charity Production, “The Night Before Christmas.” For the past six years Premiere Dance Studio has raised money during the holidays for local charities or families in need. Serrah Brod, owner of Premiere Dance Studio, believes in giving back to the community not only by providing dance instruction, but also by teaching her students the true meaning of the Holiday Spirit. This year’s charity show will benefit the Powhatan Christmas Mother program.

The Powhatan Christmas Mother program has been helping the community since 1967 and its goal is to provide gifts and food to families in need, especially children and the elderly. The organization consists of volunteers who are committed to making this possible. They try to ensure that no family in our community goes without food, no child is without toys and clothing, and no elderly person is forgotten as we celebrate the Christmas season. “The Night Before Christmas” is an original, full-length ballet inspired by the classic poem written by Clement Clarke Moore in 1822. This fun-filled, whimsical holiday show features dancing Sugar Plums, Toy Soldiers, Jack in-the-box, a

beautiful Snow Queen and of course a visit by Santa and his Reindeer. This production has over 100 cast members who have been working very hard over the past couple of months. We hope the community will come out and enjoy “The Night Before Christmas” on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. in the Powhatan High School Auditorium. Tickets are $7 each at the door. It’s hard to get out of that mindset and you want to do things the old way, but you can’t.” In the old days, her husband would meet the parents of a sick child at the drug store and dispense the medicine the child needed, Mrs. Gregg said. “He didn’t care what time of night it was,” she added. Mrs. Gregg said her husband enjoyed talking with folks at the drug store counter and finding out what was going on in the county. “He always worked the ‘B’ shift,” Mrs. Gregg said her husband used to say. “’Be’ here when the store opens and ‘be’ here when it closes.” After her husband was diagnosed with kidney

cancer in 1996, their youngest son, Scott, began helping with managing the drug store, Mrs. Gregg said. In 2000, Jim Gregg got burnt out dealing with insurance companies and worked as a part-time pharmacist, his wife said. He continued in that capacity until he was diagnosed with cancer again last year, she said. Throughout their 38year-history, their customer loyalty has remained strong, Mrs. Gregg said. “We’ve got a loyal base that have stayed with us and some of their children are even with us,” Mrs. Gregg said. “Second generations are coming….One of the reasons we’re so successful is the employees. His older brother, Donnie, 45, works for Cardinal as their wholesale drug representative. It’s rewarding, Scott said, to know that by providing people with medicine, that you’re helping to improve the quality of their lives. “They depend on you for accurate filling and accurate information,” he said. “They talk to the pharmacists for advice. Like mom said, it’s neat to see that all these peo-

ple I remember seeing growing up, they’re kids are still coming here.” The pharmacy business has changed significantly since he first began managing, Scott said. “Just in the last five years alone it’s changed,” he said. “I don’t know how else to say it other than we’re getting regulated to death….I spend most of my time on paperwork and regulations.” Though the business side of things has changed, providing top notch customer service has remained a constant with the Gregg family. “Our pharmacists are great with the customers,” Mrs. Gregg said. “There’s sometimes they don’t have the time if they’re really slammed to

go talk to them like they like to. But they are really good with them. They really are.” The Greggs consider their employees part of an extended family, Mrs. Gregg said. “Before my husband got sick, we had a picnic every year for everybody and we still do the Christmas party and we try to do different things,” she said. “It’s a family atmosphere. Everybody just gets along. Everybody pitches in.” Others have noticed as well. “BBB is pleased to have Powhatan Pharmacy as an Accredited Business since 1988,” said Tom Gallagher, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau that serves Central Virginia.

Gina Thompson has worked for the Greggs since 1995 and is the pharmacy director for the two stores in Powhatan and the store in Amelia. Thompson agreed with Mrs. Gregg that the relationship the Greggs have with their employees is amicable. “We’re all just one big, happy family,” Thompson said. Ninety-year-old Roy Nicholls said he’s been buying his medicine from the Greggs “since they have been in Powhatan.” “When you deal with them, they’re good friends and they’re dependable and they’re just good people,” he said. of the science,” Adcock said. “It’s very exciting for them to have the discourse to really talk about science, to do science with hands-on materials and of course the outdoor classroom lends a perfect place for that.” Just a short distance from the rear of Pocahontas Elementary School in a wooded area are benches and a table that can be used as a lectern and/or a place to display items. While pupils sit on the benches, they get instructions from Adcock and Putney about the assignment for the day. During one of the recent outdoor classroom sessions, the pupils were given the assignment of recording in their journals evidence of animals that are in the immediate area of the outdoor classroom based on indications that cat food that had been put out had been eaten. Another method was to put sand out and come back later to see what kind of animals visited

the area based on the tracks left behind. “It’s been wonderful for them because they’re much more able to talk about what they’re doing,” Adcock said of the outdoor classroom and the VISTA program. “They problem solve a lot. They do a lot of critical thinking and it’s not just rote – spit it back at the teacher what we’ve taught them. So a lot of what we actually do comes from them. This whole idea of the sand and the tracks are things that they’ve developed from talking and researching. The idea of having a field guide for the outdoor classroom, that came from the kids. “We try to get out here at least once every week and a half. When the weather’s good, we come out more often. We do get out here three or four times a month at the minimum.” Both Adcock and Putney, who are veteran teachers, agree that guiding the pupils through the program is gratifying. “It’s very rewarding,” Ad-

cock said. “It’s rewarding to know that we’ve instilled some kind of stewardship with them and that’s really our goal because they are the keepers of our world and we want them to become stewards and really conserve our world. So they’re the leaders. They’re the leaders of the future.” Putney spoke in a similar vein. “That’s one of our purposes, one of our goals, is to make them stewards of the earth and that’s part of why we do this,” Putney said. “If they care about the earth, care about their environment and their surroundings and have an ownership of it, then they’re going to be more likely to take care of it themselves, but also comment to other people if they’re not doing the right thing and hopefully it’ll just blossom and spread and that’s part of the goal of doing this whole program.” Like her pupils, Putney also is excited about being able to take the classroom

outside. “Well I like the freedom of being outside and not just being in the classroom all the time,” Putney said. “Just the excitement. They [the pupils] just come running to you with all the things that they find – interesting bugs and worms and trees, just knowing what the trees are. Some of them don’t spend a lot of time outside anymore so it’s great to have them outside wanting to learn and excited about what’s outside.” The idea behind the VISTA program, Putney said, is to provide the pupils with “real life learning….and getting kids to think outside of the box and not always just have a cookie cutter answer for something….They have to understand why things are happening and how we got where we are now.” Molli Logerwell, VISTA Director of Science Education at George Mason University, said the program encompasses the entire state of Virginia. “VISTA is an impactful,

collaborative state-wide project led by George Mason University’s College of Education and Human Development,” Logerwell said. “We have four implementation sites across Virginia, including Virginia Commonwealth University where 42 teachers from 18 schools in central Virginia attended our Elementary Science Institute this past summer. there’s a lot of economies of scale. “Whenever there’s legislative changes, they need to be adopted in both. So there’s a lot of duplication of effort that in this arrangement I only do it once. I have to do it one time and we do it here, do it there and so really it saves Orange money, it saves Powhatan money and I’m a taxpayer here. I own property in Powhatan, so any money I can save this county, I’m saving myself money.” Another plus, Lacheney said, is that Powhatan and Orange are similar in population and they both want to retain their rural character. “And so it’s fascinating how much the problems and issues are iden-

tical,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons it works out so well because here in Powhatan we’ve got almost the exact same issues that they’ve got up there.” Thanks to modern technology, Lacheney is only an e-mail or a telephone call away, he said. “This Board [in Powhatan] has a phone number for me that rings my desk, rings my cell phone, rings my house – one phone number,” Lacheney said. “My computer goes with me everywhere so I’m always in touch, always available.” There’s really no downside to the arrangement, Lacheney added. “There’s other jurisdictions that do this,” he said. “It’s going to save the county here about

Two Boards have advocated a full-time county attorney for two reasons: A fulltime county attorney will save money and the increased workload over the last few years warranted a full-time position. “Mr. Lacheney’s reasoning for requesting that the county attorney posi-

There is not enough work to justify a full-time position and having a full-time county attorney did not save the county money. “The county spent on average $45,000 a year more having a full-time county attorney than when the position was part-time. The Marching Royal Dukes began their season with 485 members, the largest in their history. Roberts, a freshman majoring in chemistry, plays in the bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s percussion-tenor section. On tap for this season are performances at Montpelier, the estate of

James Madison, and the Macyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. The Marching Royal Dukes date to 1972 when JMU established a football program. Membership in the band is open to all JMU students, regardless of their academic majors. This year, about 400 members are non-music majors. The band performs at all home football games, travels to select away games and represents JMU at local and regional high school exhibitions and community events.

AARP Tax-Aide is looking for volunteers to prepare income tax returns for tax year 2013. The particular focus of this service is to help low-to-moderate income taxpayers age 60 and over. Many in this category simply cannot afford to pay for tax preparation, but AARP Tax-Aide provides it free of charge. There are eight AARP tax prepa-

Equestrian club donates to food pantry Contributed Report Club Leader Melissa Clayton said the 4-H members set up a table of baked goods at the Powhatan Tractor Supply Store in October. Rather than charging a fee for the brownies and cookies, they asked for donations

to the local food pantry. The pantry is in particular need of canned goods such as tuna fish, potted meats and canned chicken. Items may be dropped off at the pantry, which is located at 2480 Academy Road on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from

10 a.m. to noon. The 4-H clubs also have a collection bin for the pantry at the Powhatan Extension Office in the basement of the Powhatan Village Building. Goodwyn said the Coalition of Powhatan Churches will continue sponsoring the “Thanks-

Gospel at its Best – Lets Fellowship Dec. 7 By Dale Goodman Contributing Writer

At 6 p.m., on Saturday, Dec. 7, gospel music fans will be gathering in the Powhatan High School Auditorium for a 10th year celebration of good gospel music. Unlike gospel concerts held at venues asking for sizable admission fees to hear an array of gospel favorites, Gospel At Its Best-Lets Fellowship continues to host its program with no admission fee. However, each year, proceeds from a heartfelt love offering always serve as an act of kindness. Throughout the years, monetary acts of kindness from this annual program have made its way to the Powhatan Volunteer Rescue and Fire Departments, Grace Ministries, families of Powhatan who have lost homes due to a disaster and also to a cultural scholarship fund award-

ed to a deserving senior at Powhatan High School. This year’s program will be highlighting some recording and non-recording gospel performers of Powhatan County. The songs to be performed by The Just Us Country Gospel Band and The Heavenly Light Gospel Singers will take us back to where gospel music got its foundation. The Bethesda Community Gospel Choir, Mt. Zion Baptist Church Combined Chorus and The Greenbrier Baptist Church Gospel Choir will elevate your mind with praise and worship. Individually, WandaMarie Duke, Tabitha Coleman and Gail Ferguson will grace the stage with their powerful and anointing voices. On Friday evening at 7 p.m. we will be treated to a performance by the Richmond Children’s Choir followed by an evening of “shopping.” On Sunday morning the fair will open before the worship service, will close during the worship service and will reopen after the service. All are welcome to attend the church service which, begins at 10:30 a.m. What is a gift fair? We often wonder what to give to family and friends when they really do not need more “things.” Consider giving a lovely gesture of human kindness this year! Cooperative Extension oﬀers shiitake mushroom workshop Contributed Report Virginia Cooperative Extension will conduct a workshop for anyone interested in producing and marketing shiitake mushrooms. Scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, the workshop will be held at 5004 Cartersville Road.

Participants will learn firsthand how to inoculate natural logs with shiitake mushrooms. Workshops presenters include Dr. Greg Frey, Virginia State University forestry extension specialist and Mark Jones, owner/operator of Sharondale Farm in Keswick. A $5 registration fee covers

Pvt. Goode graduates from Army unit training Contributed Report Army Reserve Pvt. Darion L. Goode has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo., which included basic military training and advanced individual training (AIT). During basic military training, Goode received instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons qualification, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army doctrine, history, principles and traditions. During AIT, Goode completed the military police specialist course to acquire skills to provide combat area support, conduct battlefield circulation control, area security, prisoner of war operations, civilian internee operations, and law and

order operations. Goode performed as a team member in support of battlefield operations, installation law and order operations and security of Army resources and installations. Goode is the son of Niles Goode of Powhatan, and Christie Goode of Richmond. He has served in the military for five months.

? Politicans must decide whether to work together for the people By Ben Orcutt News Editor

Election Day has come and gone in Virginia and the question now is: Will Democrats, Republicans and Independents in the General Assembly work together to move the Commonwealth forward? By now, all but a few campaign signs have been removed. Those that remain offer a reminder of some of the more contentious races, especially the contest for governor between Democrat and Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe and Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. The race was close – McAuliffe won by about 3 percent – and pundits will continue to analyze the results for days and months to come. Nevertheless, come January, McAuliffe will be Virginia’s governor and fellow Democrat Dr. Ralph S.

Northam will take office as lieutenant governor. It appears that a recount will determine whether Democrat Mark Herring or Republican Mark Obenshain will become the state’s next attorney general. Once the newly-elected leaders take office, they will represent all Virginians – those who voted for or against them and those who didn’t cast a ballot. The task now is for those who were elected to focus on what is best for all who reside within the Commonwealth – from Tidewater to the Cumberland Gap, from Northern Virginia to the North Carolina border, and everywhere in between. No elected official should feel compelled to leave their morals and principles at the statehouse door. In fact, they should champion their causes with total resolve, while at the same time respecting the rights of others with whom they disagree. Working together for the common good of all Virginians is a lofty goal, but one that also is achievable. So when the upcoming session of the General Assembly convenes, more important that the “D” or “R” or “I” after a governing member’s name is the “V” that’s in front of it: Virginian. METRO CREATIVE

Demystifying the role of Corrections in Powhatan By Carson Tucker Contributing Writer

Many folks in Powhatan are not aware that one of the Commonwealth’s largest concentrations of prison inmates is right here in our county. Powhatan Correctional Center houses up to 800 offenders and the Receiving and Diagnostic Center can house 400. Deep Meadow Correctional Center houses up to 738 inmates. In addition, the James River Work Unit on the north bank of the river has between 250 and 300 offenders. The men in these facilities are imprisoned by the Commonwealth for crimes against persons or property. Some of the crimes are very serious, some less so. The offenders can be from any part of Virginia and from outside the state for crimes Tucker committed in Virginia, but many of them are from Central Virginia. A large percentage are incarcerated for drug-related offenses. Two things are true about these men. First, they are indeed here in our community and second, they will be released back into our communities once they’ve “served their time.” Although Virginia, because of a commitment to training and rehabilitation, has the second-lowest recidivism rate among the 50 states, some of these offenders will return to prison for future crimes, but many will CHOOSE – and that’s an important word in our consideration of what happens inside, which is affected by volunteers and staff – to become productive, law-abiding citizens. DMCC has created a Community Advisory Board (CAB), which is a partnership consisting of volunteers from the surrounding community, Corrections’ staff personnel, and offenders. The CAB is a collaborative effort by these three groups to improve the communications and relationships between the Corrections facility and the Powhatan community and especially those folks who live near the facility. Whatever way offenders turn once released can be positively affected and that’s where CAB, working with staff, can make a difference. The CAB also seeks to demystify – I sometimes use the term “de-demonize” – for Powhatan citizens what actually goes on inside the walls and engage volunteers, staff, and offenders in creating programs and projects that will improve offenders’ learning, rehabilitation, and readiness to return to life outside the prison. In future installments of these essays, we will ask volunteers, staff, and offenders themselves to discuss actual programs, the effect those programs have on offenders’ lives, the actual work of the CAB, and how you, if you choose, can be part of the solution.

Navy League of the United States starts campaign for special Virginia license plate Contributed Report The Richmond Council Navy League of the United States has initiated a campaign to create a special United States Navy license plate for Virginia vehicle owners. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Virginia is home to the Naval Base Norfolk and also home to thousands of active duty, retired and former Navy veterans yet the Commonwealth does not offer a special license plate to honor their service,â&#x20AC;? said Ed Gibbons, past presi-

dent of the Richmond Navy League Council. Gibbons noted that the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offers nearly 30 different military plates including plates that honor the U.S. Army, U.S. Marines and other branches of military service. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have joined with other Navy League councils throughout Virginia to spearhead an effort to make a United States Navy license plate available to all active duty, retired and former Navy

personnel as well as the widows of Navy veterans,â&#x20AC;? he said. BSH stomps Kenston Forest in semis Alex Winfree Contributing Writer

The Blessed Sacrament Hugeunot Knights will play for their fifth state championship in five years. It’s that time of the year where high school teachers everywhere deserve a bonus. Why? Because across the nation high school football playoffs are kicking off and most young men are focused more on how they will secure the state title, not how they will do on this week’s math test. One thing is for sure, if the BSH Knights can stay as focused in the classroom as they are on the football field right now they will all bring home straight A’s and together they will secure Blessed Sacrament’s fifth straight state title. Friday night at Barham-Sowers Field, Kenston Forest was the only team left standing between BSH and a state championship appearance. BSH came in heavily favored after defeating Kenston Forest 47-7 in their regular season match up. Once again, the Knights would prove to be too much for the Kavaliers to handle. Kenston Forest received the opening kick and quickly went three and out thanks in large part to star linebacker Ethan Johnson’s sack. For the second week in a row, BSH scored on its first play from scrimmage. The speedy Chandler Emberlin took C.J. Filipkowski’s handoff 33 yards to give BSH its first touchdown just two minutes into the game. Justin Cary’s extra point was

good giving the Knights an early 7-0 advantage. The Kavaliers again went three and out and punted to the dangerous J.T. Taylor who had an excellent return of 45 yards negated by a holding penalty. BSH would turn the ball over on downs on the following drive and Kenston followed that up with another punt. This time BSH would cash in. They couldn’t get into the end zone, but Cary’s golden leg secured three points on a 33-yard field goal which probably would have been good from about 50 yards. The kick increased the BSH lead to 10-0 with 11:41 remaining in the 2nd quarter. Kenston Forest contin-

ued to struggle offensively and punted yet again following Cary’s field goal. BSH would have the same fate on the upcoming drive, but Cary continued to shine on special teams pinning Kenston Forest on its own six yard line. Another unsuccessful possession for Kenston led to another punt, but BSH couldn’t take advantage and Cary once again pinned Kenston inside their own 20. The BSH defense finally got things going back in a positive direction when they forced and recovered a Kenston fumble. Emberlin again wasted no time taking advantage of great starting field position and bulldozed two Kenston defenders on his way to a 16-yard touchdown run. Cary converted the extra point to put BSH up 17-0 with 5:28 remaining in the first half. After another unsuccessful drive by Kenston, BSH got the ball back and Filipkowski took a knee to send the teams to the locker room for halftime. Both teams struggled to move the ball in the third quarter until Filipkowski found Ryan Cary on an 80-yard touchdown strike. Cary was in oneon-one coverage and leaped over a Kenston Forest defender to come up with an excellent catch and easily cruised into the end zone. The extra point put BSH up 24-0 with 1:58 remaining in the quarter. The BSH defense continued to dominate Kenston’s offense and forced another punt and once again the Knights offense took advantage. Emberlin’s 25-yard rush moved the Knights inside the Kenston 30 yard line and Taylor was on the receiving end of a 25-yard touchdown from Filipkowski. Cary again converted the extra point to put the Knights up 31-0 with 11:48 remaining in the game. The Knights’ defense forced yet another punt and Tanner Dobrucky used some shifty moves to return the ball 35 yards. Dobrucky wasn’t done, however. He followed up his excellent punt return with an equally impres-

sive 24-yard touchdown run to put the final stamp on the Knights’ 38-0 victory. Several BSH players ended the Knight with impressive stat lines. Emberlin picked up 117 yards on just nine carries and scored twice. Ryan Cary had two catches for a very efficient 88 yards along with a touchdown. Taylor collected three

catches for 44 yards and touchdown. Leading the way for the Knights’ defense was Sean Stanley, who collected three sacks on the night. Emberlin and Johnson also contributed a sack a piece. BSH will take on the winner of the Fuqua/ Broadwater game for VISAA Division IV state championship. The time

and location of the game are still to be determined. With the Knights now riding an eight game winning streak, an offense scoring a ridiculous amount of points and a defense not allowing points, there are plenty of reasons to believe the Knights will bring another state championship to Powhatan County.

Indians know that the Black Knights (5-5, 3-4) weren’t going to be an easy out, by any means. Charlottesville made another statement on their second drive, when Rashad Brock sprinted into the end zone from 24-yards out to give “The Ville,” as they are referred to, a two-touchdown cushion. L.J. Jackson, who is averaging over 10 yards per carry this season, did his part to bring the Indians within striking distance: he sliced through the Charlottesville defense from 11 yards out early in the second quarter to shrink the score to 14-7. However, Thurston would turn out to be the game-changer, just as he has been all season long for the (other) orange and black. The signal caller made two pivotal plays in the second half that would ultimately doom the Indians to an unexpected regular season-ending defeat. The first play occurred approximately three minutes into the third quarter, when Thurston, who was lined up in the shotgun just as he was throughout the entire evening, faked a handoff to the left then sprinted right up the gut, splitting the Powhatan defense like a cantaloupe on a chopping block.

That score stretched the Charlottesville lead to 21-7 and gave the Indians a strong punch in the gut just when they were entertaining the thought of a comeback. Powhatan inched closer with two consecutive scores, one on a safety that was the result of a poor snap on a punt, the other a 9-yard touchdown scamper by Jackson that shrunk the score to 21-16. But that’s when Thurston made his second game-changing play of the second half. Facing a fourth down and five at the 48-yard line with less than 9 minutes remaining the game, Thurston audibled from a relatively conservative running play to a much more risqué call: a deep pass route that sent wide out Leon Straus sprinting through the center of the Powhatan defense on a post. The last-second adjustment paid critical dividends. Thurston connected with Straus, who had beaten the Powhatan defender by a good three feet, and the Black Knights took a commanding 28-16 lead. That rounded out the scoring for both teams. Thurston finished the night 2-of-3 for 55 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran 13 times for 144 yards and a score.

PHS boys cross country team to compete at state meet Contributed Report After a strong finish on Mechanicsville’s Pole Green Park on Nov. 7, the Powhatan boys cross country team has qualified for the state meet in Fauquier on Nov. 16. This marks the first time in the history of the cross country program that the boys have qualified as a team, according to assistant coach Elliot Gibbs. “Since the advent of the program, only individuals have gone to

states,” said Gibbs. “I think this year we finally had the right combination of boys to do it.” On a personal accolade note, senior captain Sid Noble was named first team all-conference with after placing seventh at an Oct. 30 meet at Smithfield. Powhatan’s combined score of 70 at that meet officially qualified them for the Mechanicsville meet at Pole Green Park. The Indians have been challenging top-level competition all year long, a fact that will likely prepare

them for the stiffer tests that they will face as they forge deeper into the postseason. Their most impressive showing to date, not including the Nov. 7 meet at Pole Green Park, was likely a district-wide meet that took place on Oct. 23 at Darden Towe Park. On that date, Powhatan competed against every school in the district - Monticello, Charlottesville, Western Albemarle, Fluvanna, Louisa, Albemarle and Orange – and placed third behind Western Albemarle and Albemarle.

Arnold was not done making big plays for the Indians, however. On Western Albemarle’s upcoming drive, he displayed his great hands again when he intercepted Henry Kreienbaum’s pass. Arnold’s interception set the Indians up with great field position. They began the drive from Western Albemarle’s 22yard line. A nine-yard run by Robert Myers was followed up with a sevenyard run by Noah Newton. The Indians looked to be in great position to score, but Oglesby was intercepted after heavy pressure forced him to throw into double coverage. The Indians’ defense would come to the rescue, however. Western Albemarle put a nice drive together and worked into PHS territory, but Justin DeLeon ended the threat when he intercepted Kreienbaum’s pass. He returned the ball 64 yards before finally being tackled and fumbling. Luckily for the Indians, Marquis Lee was right there to pick up the ball and he carried it the remaining four yards for another Powhatan touchdown. Clippers nip the Indians POWHATAN FALLS IN FIVE SETS TO POWERHOUSE GRAFTON Mike Schoeﬀel Sports Writer

This isn’t the way Powhatan High School head coach Erin Woodson wanted to see the season end for her seniors. The Indians were pitted against the Grafton High School Clippers, one of the most talented teams in the 757, in the first round of the conference tournament. Powhatan had scrimmaged the Clippers at home before the start of the season, and had taken a fairly strong punch in the lip. In that contest, Grafton had looked more athletic, more synchronized than the Indians. But a lot can change in three months, and based on the final score from all five sets, a lot had changed. Powhatan essentially went point for point with powerhouse Grafton for

all five sets, never losing by more than six points. But, unfortunately for Woodson and her five seniors who were suiting up in the orange and black for the final time in their careers, the Clippers were ultimately able to pull out a victory and advance to the next round of the conference tournament. “It was a very competitive game that kept us on the edge of our seats,” said Woodson. “All five seniors started and played extremely well last night. They each know their role and played their hearts out, not wanting it to be the last game of their high school career.” “I hated to see it end for them,” added Woodson. The seniors that Woodson spoke so highly of – Allison Etheridge, Nicole Nee, Cecilia Fleming, Marley Hodson and Ka-

zzie Britton – did, in fact, play their hearts out. A quick glimpse at the stat line reveals a group of girls that laid it all on the line in an attempt to extend the season just a little longer. Etheridge finished with eight kills. Nee finished with 11 kills and 6.5 blocks Fleming had four blocks and six kills. Hodson rounded up 10 digs Britton tallied four digs and a team-high 20 assists The efforts of these five girls - as well as first team all-district freshman Kelli Nee, who put up 17 assists and 10 digs – nearly allowed the underdog Indians to pull off an upset victory in what was the very definition of a back-andforth match. the fourth set by two and lost the fifth and final set by two. That’s enough seesawing to make even the most iron-stomached coach a bit nauseous. But coach Woodson refused to

focus on the negative, instead opting to look back on the match and the season through a lens of optimism. “I don’t think I have ever coached so many

games that were won/lost by two points,” said Woodson. “We battled hard last night, as well as all season. This is a group of hard working girls that love the sport of volleyball.”

Cumberland residents want politicians to work together in wake of recent election By Ben Orcutt News Editor

Cumberland County residents Ingrid Francis and Betty Fanelli believe that it is possible for Republicans and Democrats in Washington, D.C. to get along, just as they try to do with their friends and neighbors in Cumberland. A retired state employee, 74-year-old Francis has lived in Cumberland for about 40 years and is a lifelong Republican. While she’s not certain if some of her friends are Democrats, she suspects that some are. “I’m sure,” she said. “I just don’t ask whether they’re Republican or Democrat.” People with different party loyalties seem to be able to get along at the local level, but Francis said she is concerned about the logjam in Washington between Republicans and Democrats. “What troubles me the most is it’s politics,” she said. “It’s just, they’re not looking at people. They’re just looking for furthering their party or whatever their goals are than looking at the goals of the people.” The politicians in Washington need to “stop fighting,” Francis said, and the best way to send a message to them to change is “by voting I guess,” she said. Francis responded with conviction when

Republicans to nominate clerk candidate Contributed Report The Powhatan Republican Party will nominate a candidate Thursday night to carry the Republican banner into the special election for Clerk of the Circuit Court. The special election will be held February 4 to fill the unexpired term of William E. Maxey Jr. following his resignation from office. Two candidates have filed for the Republican nomination – Teresa Dobbins and Tim Gresham. The Republican Mass Meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p. m. at the Rescue Squad Building in the Courthouse Village. The meeting is open to the public. Registered voters who live in Powhatan are eligible to vote at the mass meeting if they declare agreement with the principle of the Republican Party and agree to support the Party’s nominee for Clerk of the Court. Participants will be required to sign a statement declaring their intentions to support the nominee. Candidates Dobbins and Gresham were required to sign a statement declaring their support of the winning candidate, as well. The mass meeting will essentially eliminate one of the two candidates from the field.
