It’s hard to believe Powhatan County Teacher of the Year teacher Kristian Schott was ever shy. “I love being the person who is making everybody laugh, being the center of attention, and entertaining

people,” Schott, who teaches third grade at Powhatan Elementary School, said. Part stand-up comedian, part musician and part mentor, Schott said he enjoys keeping the littlest learners engaged. When he was called to attend a Powhatan County School Board

meeting on April 8, Schott knew it was to receive his certificate for being named Powhatan Elementary Teacher of the Year alongside five other school-level honorees. However, he had no idea he’d been named Powhatan County Teacher of the Year. His see TEACHER page 2A

Board of Supervisors takes closer look at school retirement plan By Jodi Deal Richmond Suburban News

The Powhatan County Board of Supervisors is taking a second look at a controversial Supplemental Retirement Program in place in Powhatan County Public Schools. At a Monday, April 21, meeting that was being held at press time, the Board of Supervisors was considering two options for shutting

down the program – one that would end it after the current enrollees finish the program, without allowing any additional employees to enter and one that would allow 17 more employees to join by June 30, 2015, then shut the program down once the final payout is made. Those options were released to the public after a Wednesday, April 16, meeting of the Board of Supervisors that was closed to the public,

citing a section of Virginia law that allows private discussion with the board’s attorney about matters relating to pending or probable litigation. Board chairman Carson Tucker declined to comment after that meeting, but did acknowledge that the SRP had been up for discussion. see RETIREMENT page 5A
