OWHATAN – The sacrifices of men and women who have served in the U.S. military throughout the nation’s history were honored last week in two Memorial Day ceremonies in Powhatan County.

Dozens of people gathered on the morning of Monday, May 25 at the War Memorial Building for a ceremony held by American Legion Post 201. A much larger crowd gathered in the afternoon for the 35th annual Huguenot Springs Confederate Cemetery Memorial Day Service. Memorial Day in its earliest forms traces its roots to the Civil War.

While both ceremonies honored veterans who attended, organizers kept the focus of the events on those men and women who “gave the last full measure of devotion.”

Even though it was a chilly, Nov. 1 morning, Kevin S. Merryman thought he’d get an early start to avoid the traffic and bicycle from a friend’s house in Midlothian to his family’s home in Powhatan County. “Kevin had telephoned his mom that morning that he was riding home, and his mom said she was going to meet him” somewhere along the way to pick him up, said Chesterfield prosecutor Robert J.
