TOP STORY OF THE YEAR

By Laura McFarland News Editor

W

hile Election Day 2015 may have only lasted for a day, the large number of candidates, months worth of strong campaigning and anticipation of the results made the general election the top story of year. In the No. 1 spot, the general election held on Nov. 3 garnered a high level of interest as a diverse field of 35 state and local candidates vied for 19 seats. The election featured 10 races – one state and nine local – with two or more candidates and sometimes as many as four. All five board of supervisors seats, one school board seat, the sheriff and clerk of the court seats, Soil and Water Commission Monacan District’s two directors and the 10th District seat in the State Senate were all up for grabs. The high level of interest led to 51.4 percent of registered voters, or 10,055 out of 19,548 registered voters, to come out to the polls on Election Day. A small percentage voted absentee. But despite months of campaigning, numerous candidate nights and fundraisers, and the strong presence of political advertising, only four new faces were declared winners, three of whom ran in races with a spot left empty because the current elected official had decided not to run again. Karen Alexander, Powhatan County’s director of elections, said after the election that both the number of people on the ballots and the voter turnout were huge, reflecting well on the county.

OWHATAN – The final two local officials elected in the 2015 General Election took their oath of office last week in a no-frills ceremony at the Powhatan County Courthouse. Tom Walton and R. Kenneth Hatcher Sr. were sworn in on Monday, Dec. 21 as the Soil and Water Commission Monacan District’s two directors who represent Powhatan County. Teresa Hash Dobbins, clerk of the Powhatan County Circuit Court, administered the oath of office for the two men, whose term begins Jan. 1, 2016. The Monacan district services Powhatan and Goochland counties and is one of 47 districts in Virginia whose purpose it is to help make the water pure and conserve soil in their areas. They do this by providing technical assistance, education and leadership to improve natural resource conservation. he poor condition and atmosphere of the Powhatan Junior High School building has been a concern for years, but 2015 saw actual movement forward on the project. During budget talks, the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors and School Board agreed that, along with a joint transportation facility, the renovation and updating of the junior high needed to be the two biggest priorities for the county’s capital improvement plan (CIP). Moseley Architects has been hired to design the school, which would become the district’s middle school when completed. Pocahontas Middle School would be closed as a result once the new school opens. Architects have been working with a committee to figure out what features the new building needs to have to meet current and future needs identified by

administrators and teachers. Those meetings will continue into 2016 to help fine tune the design for the school. The plan is to keep the structure of the current junior high’s gym and vocational wing and completely renovate them. The section of the school that sits between them would be demolished and rebuilt. District staff and the school board have worked hard to build support for the project and get across the need for a new school during meetings and at separate events held at the school. The project, which will cost an estimated $35.3 million, also became a big talking point for candidates in the general election as the question of the renovation and how to pay for it without raising property taxes became a hot issue.

Special election for two positions

he No. 7 slot on this year’s Top 10 is a direct result of one of the top stories on the 2014 Top 10 list. In fall 2014, then commonwealth’s attorney Bob Beasley was appointed as a General District Court Judge in the 11th Judicial District, setting off a chain reaction of events that resulted in a special election on Feb. 10. Richard Cox, who served as assistant commonwealth’s attorney for 16 years, and Jason Moore, who represented District 2 on the board of supervisors, ran against each other for Beasley’s empty seat. Moore announced he would resign from his seat on the board of supervisors effective Feb. 8, leading to a second special election for his vacated seat. Larry Nordvig and Gail Timberlake ran for that seat. The special election drew 2,759 voters to the polls on Feb. COX 10, with a small number voting absentee, which meant a turnout of 14.3 percent of 19,232 registered voters at the time. Cox won by a wide margin with 2,427 votes to Moore’s 305 votes. The District 2 supervisor race was much closer, with Nordvig receiving 468 votes compared with Timberlake’s 403 votes. Not far off this year’s Top 10 list was a related matter involving Nordvig. While he ran as a staunch Republican in the special election, Nordvig publically split with the local party at the board’s meeting on May 18. He said at the time that Powhatan’s republican group has been “hijacked” and that some in the party (he didn’t give names) were trying to run the county by trying to control the supervisors. to do right by it and move on. When the board of supervisors passed a resolution honoring him at its Dec. 7 meeting, Neal said that since the day in 1971 when he first came to Powhatan County, “it has been really, really good to me and I hope that I’ve done some good for Powhatan County in return.”

won the election and will take office on Jan. 1, 2016. Neal began his career in law enforcement when he became a deputy in September 1981 in Powhatan at the age of 22. Through the years, he worked under three sheriffs before being elected to the position himself. His career working for those three men was divided into three distinct sections – road deputy, detective and undersheriff. Neal said in February and again when he was honored this month by the board of supervisors that he still enjoys his job and didn’t want to leave it. But in a field that is constantly evolving, he said he thinks he has taken the department as far as he can and wants

suggested a reduction from the proposed budget of $826,811. Of that amount, $291,285 would go to the 1 cent real estate tax reduction and the balance of $535,526 would stay in the budget and be transferred to the capital maintenance reserve to increase the fund balance. David Williams, District 1, was the only other supervisor to immediately support Hodge’s proposal. Chairman Bill Melton, District 4, Larry Nordvig, District 2, and Carson Tucker, District 5, reacted negatively to having the changes proposed at the 11th hour. Voting on the real estate tax rate and the budget was deferred and came back before the board at its May 18 meeting. The meeting had a big audience turnout, and eight speakers used the public comment period to urge the board not to cut the county’s operating budget. Many were school district employees who were upset that the proposed plan included cutting $402,163 from the schools earmarked for filling positions and salary increases. Ultimately, both the real estate tax rate and budget were passed in 3-2 votes, with Melton, Nordvig and Tucker in favor of approving them without the proposed cuts Williams and Hodge against. see TOP 10 page 3A

Henrico County man was found guilty of murder in a jury trial in June and sentenced to 30 years in prison in September in a Powhatan County Court. Juan Carlos Ayala Rivas, 30, who was originally from El Salvador, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for second degree murder, arson and grand larceny RIVAS in the death of Jaime Cruz-Avila, 24, also of Henrico, in February 2014. The victim’s body was discovered in a burned-out vehicle at Watkins Boat Landing. Regardless of where the murder took place, Virginia code makes a homicide subject to prosecution in the county in which a body is found. Rivas was originally charged with first degree murder and the two other felonies, but at the end of a three-day trial, a jury found him guilty of the lesser murder charge. Richard Cox and Robert Cerullo, Powhatan County’s commonwealth’s attorney and deputy commonwealth’s attorney, respectively, tried the mostly circumstantial case together. Much of the evidence they presented revolved around Rivas’ cell phone placing him on a path that could have led to Watkins Landing and his suspicious behavior in the days after the body was discovered.

Lion statue to ride with local club in parades By Laura McFarland News Editor

P

OWHATAN – The Powhatan Lions Club’s newest member is a recent transfer from Mechanicsville who acts like he’s the King of the Beasts – which, of course, he is. A statue known as Lion Eric joined the club this fall when members acquired him from the widow of a former Mechanicsville Lions Club member. Pam Bartle wanted a tradition started by her late husband, Eric, to carry on by giving the lion statue to a club that would use him in parades, Jim Washburn, president of the Powhatan Lions Club, said.

Since the local club, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in March 2016, has run Powhatan’s annual Labor Day Parade for four years and always has a float in the Christmas Parade, Washburn thought it would be a good fit. “She didn’t want it t o just go to auction and have it sitting somewhere. She wanted to keep the Lionsism part of it going, Washburn said. “I assured her it would be in every parade, weather permitting, that we participate in. It is paper mache, so it can’t go out in bad weather. Lion Eric participated in his first Powhatan parade this month when he rode on the club’s float in the Christ-

mas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 12. After the parade, some of the members doing eye screenings for the public heard many positive comments about the statue, Randy Schulkers, a club member, said. “The children really liked it. Some of them wanted to ride it, he said, adding it isn’t possible since the statue is made of paper mache. It was a surprise for many members to find out it was made of paper mache since it actually looks quite realistic, he said. “When we looked at it at first, we thought it was a sculpture made out of stone or something. I didn’t know it was paper until somebody told me, Schulkers said.

Club members have all been thrilled with the lion’s new role when he has been brought to a meeting, the group’s annual Christmas party and the parade, Washburn said. “Not only is it realistic but the idea of what it stands for has everybody pleased with it, he said. Throughout the world, Lions Clubs display and wear an emblem that features two lion profiles on either side of a gold letter “L facing away from the center. Symbolically, the lions face both past and future – proud of the past and confident of the future, Washburn said. “What we should do is learn from our experiences in the past and then look to

the future to see what else we can do to be of service to people in need, the blind and the deaf as well as others, he said. The statue is something tangible for people who see it to recognize that the Lions Club is a real entity and more than just a name, Schulkers said. Fortunately for the people who end up carrying him, Lion Eric isn’t made of stone, Washburn said. The statue is 6 feet long, 3 feet wide and 4 feet tall but light enough for two people to carry. Beyond that, the club doesn’t know much more about the statue, he said. Pam Bartle remembered that her husband bought it for the Mechanicsville Club years ago and had it repaired because it was in bad shape. Fortunately for Powhatan, Eric Bartle kept the statue in good condition. “Right now there is one place on the left front paw we have to repair. It’s just a crack, not anything major, Washburn said.

2015 was a year of ups and downs By Laura McFarland News Editor

F

ifty-two can be a big number or a little one, depending on your perspective. If you were counting pennies, M&Ms, or cars going by that were white, it might not seem so monumental. On the other hand, if you were counting the rough percentage of the county’s registered voters that voted, the number of stairs to climb when you are tired, or the amount of people in front of you in line at the DMV, 52 takes on more significance. In 2015, the biggest significance of the number 52 for this writer was that it is the number of editions I will have put out as news editor of the Powhatan Today once the one you are reading came off the presses. Since I joined the newspaper in late May 2014, the same could not have been said of last year. Powhatan County, you kept me hopping in 2015. There were two elections; a murder trial; an in-depth introduction to the county’s budget process; a few dedicated elected officials moving on to the next chapter of their lives; great activities, programs and

achievements coming out of Powhatan County Public Schools; businesses coming and going; and an endless whirl of social events such as concerts, festivals, dances and parades. It has been a year of ups and downs. One fire, one fatal shooting involving law enforcement and numerous motor vehicle accidents claimed the lives of Powhatan residents. Despite the fantastic job done by the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office, the county continues to have problems with crimes such as breaking and entering, larceny, shoplifting, drugs, driving under the influence, frauds and scams and more. But, on the flip side of that, there also have been moments of great kindness and generosity. Several families affected by loss and injury of some kind spoke of the support of the community in every way: physical, emotional and financial help. Almost every week I could write a story about people holding fundraisers to benefit someone in need or one of Powhatan’s many local nonprofit organizations. Stories this year have run the gamut of emotions, making our readers happy, sad, angry, disgusted, outraged, encouraged, empowered, and educated, ac-

cording to feedback we have received. After the recent swearing-in ceremony of 13 local elected officials, I spoke with Rick Cole, who is about to serve his second term representing District 1 on the Powhatan County School Board. He told me, and I quoted him as saying, that he felt he had learned a great deal in his first term. “I don’t know that it will be easier, but I will be more familiar with how things work,” he said about his second term in office. I understood how he felt. No matter how many stories I write, there will always be situations and people who have the ability to surprise me, both good and bad. There will always be more stories to tell because Powhatan County is made up of people who are constantly changing and having new life experiences they are willing to share with the newspaper and its readers. Thank you, Powhatan, for sharing the last 52 weeks with me. I look forward to the next 52 in 2016 and hope you, our readers, will continue to come along for the journey. Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday.com.

T

he recent upheaval in Augusta County, which made national news, served as yet another reminder that the application of common sense seems to be less common these days than

ever. If you missed the story, here is the abridged, twosentence version: Schools in Augusta were shut down for a day last week — the last school day before Christmas break — after a furor erupted over a World Geography class lesson on calligraphy that asked students to copy the Islamic statement of faith. Some parents, outraged, claimed the school was attempting to indoctrinate their children and convert them to Islam. While this makes little sense to me, I think the theory could hold the key to never-before-seen advances in parenting.

Think of the possibilities here, people. Going by this theory, we can get our kids to do anything we want— from deciding that homework is fun to embracing the merits of eating vegetables. All one would need to do is to put it in a textbook, have a student copy it over, and wham — you get a totally transformed individual, willing to throw off all that they have been taught up to that point and embrace a new worldview to which they previously had zero exposure. In all seriousness, particularly when it comes to this latest flap, I think we’re giving our students too little credit — and we’re giving textbooks far too much. Could the upheaval in Augusta have been avoided? Probably. A forward-thinking educator — working in a rural community, in America, in 2015 — might have had the forethought to amend the lesson ahead of time. (Is there seriously no other Arabic phrase that could have been used? Because Google Translate could have turned this

entire editorial into Arabic faster than you could read the first line). But that also is beside the point. The crux of the matter is that when we start preventing children from learning or experiencing the world because we fear they will be “indoctrinated,” we risk beginning a long slide down a slippery slope. Should children be prevented from learning about Amazonian tribal life because of the chance they will find it more appealing than suburbia? Do we avoid talking about World War II, just in case some child might embrace the Nazi cause? No. Because that would be ridiculous. If we ever hope to stop wars caused by religion, or the bigotry and hatred caused by ignorance, we are going to have to understand more about the people who share this planet with us. And that means an education that is more comprehensive, not less. Unpalatable as it may be to some, it’s food for thought.

lished. For the past several Christmases, I’ve considered giving in and purchasing an artificial tree. It’s something most of my friends did long ago, and they are all too willing to declare the benefits of a fake tree. When the subject comes up, they speak as if they have a personal stake in the sales of artificial trees, and I’ve never heard the first complaint from any of them regarding their decision to switch. But, being old and stubborn, I have refused the impulse to forego the agony of finding, selecting, mounting, and disposing of a once alive piece of greenery that emits a unique aroma that only fills my home at Christmastime. But, this year I decided it was all too much, and I shopped around for a suitable facsimile of the trees that have highlighted my holidays for many decades. I suppose I was much too particular, and all the options fell woefully short of my expectations, and not a single one smelled like a Christmas tree. see TREE page 7A

SEC nominated for Electric Cooperative Purpose Award Contributed Report

S

outhside Electric Cooperative(SEC) is among 14 coops nationwide recently nominated for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Electric Cooperative Purpose Award. The Arlington-based trade association represents SEC and more than 900 electric cooperatives across the United States. In its first year of existence, the national award recognizes electric cooperatives that work to make outstanding contributions resulting in visible, lasting improvements to the quality of life and the purpose of the cooperative in the community. The award nomination focuses on SEC’s Day in the Life of a Lineman career exploration program, which seeks to educate local high school juniors and seniors about exciting job opportunities in the line worker industry. Since 2014, about 325 students have participated in SEC’s four-hour curriculum, which consists of class-

room presentations and interactive outdoor activities led by co-op personnel. “Our intentions are to showcase a career alternative to students who are either not seeking, or not ready for, a college education. If we can make a difference in just one student’s life, then we’ve succeeded with our program,” Jeff Edwards, SEC’s president and CEO, said. Southside Electric is also partnering with Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) and other Virginia co-ops to help create the state’s first Power-Line Worker Training School, set to launch next year at SVCC’s Occupational Technical Center at Fort Pickett in Blackstone. Classes begin in March 2016, and registration is ongoing. “SEC is excited to be part of the solution in expanding the horizons of our young people, and it has been extremely rewarding to see the overwhelmingly positive response to the program,” Edwards said. tives around the country in areas such as political activism, international aid and community service. The award is meant to recognize cooperatives that go beyond the core mission of providing safe, affordable

and reliable electricity. The winner of the Electric Cooperative Purpose Award will be announced at the assocaition’s 2016 annual meeting in February in New Orleans. Southside Electric Co-

operative (SEC) is a nonprofit, member-owned energy provider that serves more than 55,000 homes and businesses in portions of 18 counties in central and southern Virginia. Headquartered in Crewe,

SEC has district offices in Altavista, Crewe, Dinwiddie and Powhatan. For more information about SEC’s Day in the Life of a Lineman program, go to www.sec.coop/DayintheLife.

Proper nutrient management is good farm management Contributed Report As nitrogen costs fluctuate, nutrient management is fast becoming an essential part of running a profitable agricultural operation. “Timing the application of nutrients to provide them when crops need them most, basing nutrient applications on soil test data, and delivering nutrients closer to plant roots are just three of the nutrient management practices that allow farmers to make smart use of costly fertilizer,” said Keith Burgess, district manager of Monacan Soil and Water Conservation District. Nutrient management practices can be implemented on any crop or pasture lands, including anywhere corn and small grains are grown. They improve water quality by decreasing the amount of nutrients from fertilizer or manure that enter local streams. While the environment benefits, so can farm pro-

duction. In addition to reducing fertilizer usage and costs, nutrient management can improve soil quality, as well as increase crop yield and quality. Funding from the Virginia Agricultural Best Management Practices Cost-Share Program is available to offset the costs of writing and implementing nutrient management plans and their associated practices, as are Virginia tax credits. Farmers who want to accelerate the production benefits of nutrient management can plant year-round cover crops and implement continuous no-till cultivation systems. “You can buy scents that smell just like a Christmas tree,” the helpful clerk said at one display. True enough. I also can sit by a video-induced fireplace and pretend I’m feeling the warmth of an open flame, but it’s not even close to the real experience. To be honest, the only tree I found that came close to my unreal expectations would have required a payment plan. Taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather, I ventured out one night after dinner and retrieved a small but aromatic tree from the local home improvement box store. After the normal several tries, the tree was leveled and ready for lights and ornaments. My children shouldered the burden of the task, and the result was usual, but a real and appreciated centerpiece of our holiday decorations. As I sat and admired the colorful lights as

The commonwealth’s 47 Soil and Water Conservation Districts carry out the Virginia Cost-Share Program on the local level. District staff can help farmers apply for many different cost-share funding programs to implement nutrient management best management practices. And I couldn’t help but think of a Christmas long ago, when we pulled our car into a small Christmas tree lot on a rural road. A rigged extension cord with a few dimly lit bulbs provided the only light over the few rows of recently cut trees. We clutched our coats and bundled our scarves as a cold wind greeted us. My father inspected many trees before he found the perfect one, always larger than the one my mother suggested. But, even she would say many years after his death, he always picked the prettiest tree, and took the most particular

vides them with meals. The bags of food were a gift from the Scouts to the Powhatan-based nonprofit Backpacks of Love, which provides at-risk children with bags of food they can take home to make sure they are being fed even when school is not in session. This is the fourth year the pack of first through fifth-graders has worked together on the project and by far the most successful effort, Michelle Clancy, committee chair for the pack, said. In addition to purchasing the food with money the boys raised and then having them package it on Monday, Dec. 14, the pack raised enough extra to hand over a check to Backpacks of Love for $1,513.13. “We know there are children who do not get to eat on the weekends. We have a great opportunity to let the scouts know that there are people less fortunate than them to help them grow into great men,” Clancy said. Currently, Backpacks of Love feeds 500 children in Powhatan, Cumberland and Buckingham counties, Gloria Couch, managing director of the nonprofit organization, said. The Scouts’ donation will basically feed all of the Powhatan students – they serve 137 Powhatan elementary students every week – for a weekend.

Monacan District in the form of grants, matching grants and tax credits. Walton has served on the board for 12 years but this will be Hatcher’s first term. He was elected to a position formerly held by David Moyer, who decided not to run for the office again after serving in the position for 24 years. The two men came to the courthouse straight from a meeting of the board. During the meeting, the board recognized Moyer for his many years serving as a director, which is an unpaid position.

Swearing in ceremony Although this was not his first time

When Couch started working with Backpacks about a year ago, the nonprofit helped a total of 180 children. Now it is up to 500 children. “There are many needy children in Powhatan and the surrounding counties. We want people to know we are growing. We are trying to spread,” she said. The Scouts’ donation helped Backpacks tremendously between the size of the food donation, the fact that it came packed and ready to send home with children and the extra funds they raised, Couch said. “Monetary donations and food drives from the community are hugely important,” she said. “That support – donations like the one from the Cub Scouts, who packed and donated the food – is wonderful. Powhatan has been very supportive,” Couch said. For the fourth straight year, the boys in Pack 1838 were asked to talk to 10 people individually and ask them for $1 to go toward the nonprofit, Clancy said. They also set up booths in the community at local stores to ask people passing by for a donation. This year’s effort was a big leap from the three previous years, when the pack raised $300, $500 and then $600 respectively, Clancy said. The total raised in 2015 was about $2,200, with a good chunk of that going to buy the food the boys packed, she said. Zander O’Sickey, 11, of Powhatan said he liked packing the bags. The Arrow of Light Scout said the whole project is a fun

way to do something for the community. “We go to friends and family and ask for $1 or more. They usually give $1 or $2. Sometimes they are generous and give $5,” he said. Fellow Arrow of Light Scout Cole Whiting, 11, of Powhatan, said he likes not only knowing he helped another child avoid going hungry over a weekend but that the pack draws others into the effort as well. “We are getting other people to help people who don’t have food,” he said, adding it feels pretty good. The boys have a great time doing this

project because they are involved from beginning to end and see the whole process, Stephanie Blankenship-Stauffer, Bear Cubs den leader, said. Her son, Jerry Stauffer, 8, has mentioned seeing people at his school with the bags and he loves that he was part of that effort, she said. “When we see something in the store, he sometimes says that item could be used by Backpacks of Love,” she said. being sworn into office, Walton said it still makes him feel what he and the other directors are doing is significant and important, which is a good feeling, he added. Despite the simplicity of the swearing in ceremony, Hatcher said the experience made him feel patriotic and reinforced the feeling that “you have an obligation to your community and the ones who elected you.” The board has oversight on the money allocated by the district to “see that the funds are spent in a way that maximizes preventing water runoff to improve water quality and maintaining nutrients in the soil,” Hatcher said. and the soil in place in Powhatan and Goochland counties. Having grown up in Powhatan, Walton said he remembers when farmers plowed, disced and cultivated their land without thought to what was happening to the soil or the nearby streams and rivers. All the work on the soil led to a soft seed bed that would be carried off by the first rain and get into the water sources. “There is a reason Muddy Creek is called Muddy Creek,” he said, adding he can point out places in the county that used to have soil levels 3 feet above where they are now. Educating farmers about best practices over the years has helped a great deal to keep the soil in place and the waterways cleaner, he said. There are still issues with residents who want to have the greenest lawn and use fertilizers to achieve it, Walton said. They don’t realize what they do may not result in the cleanest water. “Too much nitrogen in the water causes algae to grow. Too much algae means sunlight doesn’t penetrate deep enough into Chesapeake Bay to grow eelgrass. Then there is no place for the baby fish and crabs to hide,” Walton said. He added that when problems arise that affect the economy dependent on the bay, Powhatan County plays a role in that simply by living upstream. In the same way, the best management practices the Monacan District promotes among farms also applies to anyone involved in working the land, even in the smallest ways, Walton said. “We all drink the same water, and it’s a team effort for sure,” he said.

During the board’s meeting on Dec. 21, David Moyer was honored by conservation district staff and fellow board members for serving 24 years on the board. Del. Lee Ware, R-65, also attended to express his appreciation for Moyer’s work. Betty McCracken, a conservation specialist with the Monacan District, gave a presentation on Moyer’s contri-

butions and years of service and Walton presented him with a glass trophy. McCracken talked about how Moyer moved to Powhatan County in 1965 and started farming here on his own in 1975. His farm, Kelona Farm, now has about 50,000 chickens, which are used for egg-laying not for meat, she said. Moyer has led the community by example by implementing best management practices on his land, McCracken said. She pointed out best practices such as using a no-till planting system, covering crops, nutrient management, a stream exclusion system for cattle, precision planting using GPS, conservation crop rotation and covered litter storage shed. At the state level, Moyer served eight years on the Virginia Soil and Water Board, including one year as the term chair, she said. He also won the James River Grand basin Clean Water Farm award. At the county level, he has served on the Monacan District board and held positions as the district chair, chair of the agriculture and personnel committees and working on the legislative committee. Moyer told the group he thinks of the Monacan District as family, which is “what made it so easy to work this period of time. Working together for the community and our own quality of life has kept me going.” Although being a director is an unpaid position, Moyer said his business did benefit from the knowledge he gained through being a part of the group. He implemented many initiatives on his own farm. Moyer thanked the group and said he would still be around as a farmer. Ware pointed out that this year, a number of people have noticed that Virginia’s waterways are clear enough to see to the bottom. “I know we haven’t solved everything, but I think it is the work of people like David and you here on the board that has made it incrementally positive,” he said. • Year in Review • Former sports editor Mike Schoeffel takes a look at the year that was in Powhatan sports in 2015, from his view. By Mike Schoeffel For the Powhatan Today

I

n my old bedroom, there’s a stack of Powhatan Today newspapers that nearly comes up to my knee. It’s the day after Christmas, and my brother is going hunting in a t-shirt. I’m dressed in a pair of pajamas that look like jeans, determined to flip through every paper in this knee-high stack and reminisce about the

past year in Powhatan athletics. There is much to be remembered. State champions were crowned, long-standing records were felled, new coaches revitalized struggling programs, and two particularly high-achieving individuals set themselves up with future Olympic glory. Even within the context of the deep Powhatan history, 2015 will be remembered as a particularly unique year for Powhatan sports. There is no chronological order in this stack: One moment I’m looking at a photo from a Blessed Sacrament basketball game in January, the next I’m reading an article about a Powhatan High School baseball game in June. After a few minutes, a headline catches my eye: “Conway: A State Champion, a Budding Legend.” Conway was to the PHS running program in 2015 what Logan Allen was to the

2014 PHS football team -- an irreplaceable, record-breaking talent who may be the best in Powhatan history at what he did. He became the first indoor track state champion in school history in March, and, soon thereafter, placed fifth at a national meet in New York City by breaking the school record in the 1000-meter. He graduated with six school track and field records in total, prompting head coach Gregg Whisler to claim “Without question, he is the best (I’ve ever coached.)” Over any other 52-week span, Conway would have been the consensus selection for Athlete of the Year. But the field was thick in 2015, and Conway’s adversaries are numerous. I soon come across another notable boldface headline: “The First of His Kind.” It’s about Collin Gerardi, the first freshman wrestler in PHS history to win a state title.

I remember covering Collin well. The fire orange hair, the slim-but-toned pale frame, the way his motor never stopped running out on the mat. Early on in the season, when I was still getting acquainted with the team, I spoke with one particularly avid Indians wrestling fan who informed me, in hushed tones up in the bleachers, that Collin was “the one to watch.” His words were vindicated when Collin won the title. I recall being taken aback by the confidence oozing through the line when I interviewed the young wrestler over the phone just days after he took States. “I feel that I’ve been through more than my opponents,” he told me. “I know I’ve put in all the work and I’ve had more experience.” see MEMORIES page 2B

Fall sports promised excitement, delivered By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

The second half of 2015 was full of excitement and opportunities for Powhatan High School and Blessed Sacrament Huguenot to step into the athletic spotlight and show what they can do. And, in some cases, these athletes went up against the best in the state and held their own. In September, the fresh anticipation of the fall sports lineup of football, cross-country, girls volleyball, golf, and field hockey brought high expectations to the county as school came into session. The Powhatan and Blessed Sacra-

ment Huguenot football teams both won their opening games of the 2015 campaign, but both teams were hindered by a ravaging injury bug. The bug hit the Indians particularly hard, effecting some of their players that played both offense and defense especially hard, stretching the lineup thinner and thinner as the season progressed. Powhatan finished the season 4-6 after a 28-10 loss to Monticello and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2001. Even in the season’s final game, the bug did not relent, as four Indians fell against the Mustangs. Will Schwartz’s play on defense, especially late in the season, and playmakers such as Justin Dele-

on, Gabe Satterwhite and the combination of Peyton Mawyer and Jacob Oglesby under center were consistently ones to watch for the Indians. Blessed Sacrament did not fare much better. With Ron Gundry taking over the reins for the Knights football team, the injuries hit later in the season than Powhatan, but for the same effect. After a 50-13 loss to Roanoke Catholic, the Knights were down to 17 players on the roster after losing 12 to injury. Noah Dowdy and Tanner Dobrucky were the bright spots for the Knights throughout the season. Gundry said at season’s end that he’s optimistic about the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot lineup next

season because many of the younger kids on this year’s team got a lot of experience this season that’ll pay dividends next year. As football ruled Friday nights as always, the volleyball teams were queens of the court indoors throughout the season. Amber Ortolano came in as the new head coach for the Powhatan Indians and the turnaround from a down year last season was evident, as the Indians won 13 games in a row midseason after falling to perennial power Hanover in the opener. The combination of Julia Goodman, Abby and Kelli Nee powered see FALL page 2B

16 of his 18 points in the second half, which led the Indians to a 61-54 victory over the Cavaliers. His size and inside presence was huge for the Indians, and he had two keys blocks as well that disrupted the Caroline offense. Throughout the game

Year in Review: The Best of the Best Game of the Year May 28, 2015 Conference 19 semifinals Powhatan 5, Jamestown 3 Going into the game on May 28, the Jamestown Eagles were the top seed in the Conference 19 tournament. After the game, they were eliminated from the playoffs thanks to an inspired Indians baseball team. Powhatan’s Ryan Brinkley tripled to start the game-winning rally. Andrew Llewellyn, Brennan O’Neil, and Logan Amiss all had RBIs in the decisive inning. The win advaned the Indians to the conference final, where they fell to Grafton. Powhatan won in the regional quarterfinal 14-1 over Churchland, but fell in the semfinal 8-2 to eventual state champion Glen Allen.

Gerardi made a habit of opening eyes in his freshman season as a member of the Powhatan Indians wrestling team. A 44-2 record with 18 wins by pin set the foundation for a truly remarkable feat. Gerardi went up against James Woods’ Aaron Black and won the state championship at the 113 weight class by a 6-0 decision. He was unscored upon during postseason play. Gerardi is the first state champion as a freshman for Powhatan wrestling and the second state champion in Indians wrestling history.

Powhatan High School graduate Janey Goodman continued her spectacular career for the James Madison University Dukes. Goodman led the CAA with 4.32 kills per game and 5.02 points per game. She scored her 1,000th career kill against UNC-Wilmington on Oct. 18, and had 31 kills in the CAA semifinal match against Charleston, a career high. Goodman now owns the JMU record for attacks attempt in a season with 1,255. She was named CAA player of the year, VaSID player of the year. She was named to the AVCA AllEast Coach Region team, and to the Eastern College Athletic Confernce first team. .

Memories Continued from page 1B

He finished the year 442, routing the defending state champion, Aaron Black, 6-0, in the title bout. On April 15, a headline “A Stroke Away from Olympic Immortality” looms over an article chronicling 16year swimmer Casey Fanz’s qualification for the 2016 Olympic Trails. In January, “Powhatan’s Golden Girls” spotlighted PHS girls’ basketball players Monty Johnson and Timesha Morris, the first pair of 1,000-point scorers to play for the Indians at the same time. A few months later, Johnson became the school’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing her uncle, multisport legend Shawn Minor. Blessed Sacrament saw its fair share of high water marks as well. In March, a column titled “The New-Look Knights” sang the praises of the Knights boys’ basketball team and their exhilarating run to the state quarterfinals. Fresh off a sub-500 season, first-year head coach Luke Bobbitt stoked a fire within the program, leading the Knights to a 22-9 record -- 15 more wins than they had in 2014. The girls’ team bloomed under a new coach, too. Jenny Pruett turned the Knights from a 5-16 team to a 16-10 team, leading them to an appearance in the state tournament. And let’s not shrug off the swim team, which sent

six athletes to the state meet in March. Let’s not forget about the rest of the stories, like PHS baseball team’s out-ofthe-blue midseason turnaround, the wrestling team’s dominant victory in the inaugural Arrowhead Invitational, and Team Nathan winning the biggest team challenge at the Shamrock 5K for the second consecutive year. Plus, the stack of papers I’m browsing through only runs through the beginning of August, which is when I stepped down as sports editor at the Powhatan Today and moved halfway across the country. I’m sure much has been accomplished in Powhatan since I’ve left -I’ve heard that a PHS alum, a former teammate of mine, is now a member of Team USA bobsledding. The incomparable Billy Fellin will take care of recognizing the athletes I’ve failed to mention here in the accompanying Year in Review article. After getting lost in the stack for almost five hours, I hear my brother trudging up the steps and to my door. “Hey,” he says, sweaty from heat. “Do you want a tuna sandwich, bro? Mom’s making lunch.” I put the papers back in a towering stack and drop them back in the closet. Who knows when they’ll be looked at again? It’s comforting to know if I ever want to travel back in time and remember what it was like to cover Powhatan sports in 2015, all I have to do is open this door and start thumbing my way

Blessed Sacrament •Boys Soccer The Blessed Sacrament Huguenot boys soccer team were a nearly unstoppable force in the spring 2015 season. The Knights rolled to a 12-0 record and outscored their opponents 83-15 en route to the perfect mark prior to the Virginia Colonial Conference championship game. While Blessed Sacrament fell 3-2 to Isle of Wight, a team the Knights had defeated twice during the season, in the VCC title game, the Knights still had a season to remember. BSH’s Seth Manis set a new record during the season with 39 goals scored, blowing past the previous record of 17 which was set in the mid-2000s. Mike Schoeffel and Billy Fellin worked together in selecting these end-of-the-year honors.

the Indians’ offense and were a formidable trio throughout the year. Powhatan advanced to the conference final, where they fell to the Hawks in three sets before traveling to Courtland High School in Spotsylvania where the Indians came back after dropping the first set to take the Cougars in four. Powhatan’s season would end the next night in the regional semifinals to Jamestown. Blessed Sacrament’s volleyball team also had a strong season, powered by Ann Marie Kemp and Liza Moore. Consistency was the name of the game for the Knights prior to their season ending against Tidewater Academy in the VCC tournament. The Knights had a record breaking season, coach Mandy Mills said in November. Cross-country was a highlight for the Indians as sophomore Lindsey Fanz was always finding herself close to the front of the pack race after race. Fanz was one of four Indians that qualified for the Group 4A state meet and Fanz was the highest finisher of the all with 47th overall in the girls race. Fanz ran a personal record of a 19:15 in the Region 4A East meet. Blessed Sacrament’s cross-country team had a strong season in the VCC,

Not to be outdone, the Powhatan field hockey team had a season to remember. The Indians were led by seniors Aislin Dulio, Magen Palmore, Hannah Adams and Brie Burgio to a double-digit win season and a spot in the region tournament. Adams scored four goals in the conference semifinal against Hanover that clinched that berth for Powhatan.

Now, in the midst of basketball, wrestling, swimming and indoor track, Powhatan and Blessed Sacrament once again have the chance to shine in the spotlight. The winter sports have already delivered on the promise of excitement just as the fall sports did, with Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Mason Livers hitting a game-winning 3point shot at the buzzer to defeat Veritas on the opening night of the season for the Knights. And, after the winter sports, the Powhatan lacrosse program will take to the field for the first time in VHSL competi-

tion, along with the other spring sports for the Powhatan County schools. As 2015 comes to a close, the athletic calendar year was full of memorable performances, determined athletes, focused coaches, and supportive fans and administrations at both schools. The fan bases for Powhatan and Blessed Sacrament are some of the most supportive and ardent in the Richmond area, and that fervor for sports and success will no doubt continue as the calendar flips to 2016. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Matt Schiefer kicks off during the Big River Rivalry game at Randolph-Macon College. Schiefer was the only Powhatan area player in the annual senior all star game. 4. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Mason Livers is swarmed by his fellow students after he hit a game-winning 3-point shot at the buzzer to beat Vertias in the Knights opening game. Livers had been cold shooting during the game, but came back with a vengenance and in the clutch when his team needed him most. 5. Powhatan alum Hakeem Abdul-Saboor made an athletic switch from football to bobsledding that paid off in spades. Abdul-Saboor made the Team USA bobsled team and hopes to compete in the next Winter Olympics. 6. Powhatan running back Justin Deleon was part of a romp of George Wythe to move to 2-1 at that point in the season, but injuries halted any playoff chances that the Indians would aspire to in 2015. It was the first time since 2001 that Powhatan did not qualify for the playoffs. 7. Julia Goodman goes up for a spike during the “Pink Out” game where money was raised that would be donated to breast cancer awareness and research. Goodman was rock solid for the Indians on the outside this season. Her play was one key element in propelling the Indians to the 4A East semfinal game against Jamestown, where the Eagles just overpowered the Indians. 8. Garrett Manes, a Powhatan resident takes the checkered flag in his Arena Racing machine at the Richmond Coliseum. He is a three-time defending Arena Racing youth division champiion and won four out of 10 races in the 2015 season. He has 21 poles and 14 wins in his career. The 13-year-old is also on the autism spectrum and, as of May, 2015, looking into creating a foundation in his name to search for a cure to autism. 9.
