County honors Employee of the Year By Laura McFarland News Editor

OWHATAN – Listening to the accomplishments of his fellow nominees for Powhatan County Employee of the Year made a big impression on the winner of the award, Christian McIntosh. McIntosh, the facility maintenance supervisor in the department of public works, said he was caught up in what fellow employees had to say about each of the four nominees and was taken by surprise when his name was announced last week as the winner of the annual recognition award. Once the news really clicked for him, he said he felt incredibly grateful and appreciative to be recognized for PHOTO COURTESY OF POWHATAN COUNTY doing work he enjoys. OWHATAN – When the members of Shiloh Baptist Church in Powhatan mark the 150th anniversary of their church this weekend, they will be honoring a congregation, not a building. True, the members take pride in their building, which dates to around 1898, when a fire destroyed the previous structure, and the fact it is still in good condition despite its advanced years. But the congregation’s roots go even deeper, dating back to 1866 and the years immediately following the Civil War, when

former slaves were trying to find their way in the world and would hold regular prayer meetings in a local home, said church member Gale Lipscomb of Powhatan. For Lipscomb and many other church members, the rich, 150-year history of Shiloh Baptist is more than academic or another milestone reached. It is also a family history – a recounting of how generation after generation has worked hard to keep the church going, even in the face of hardships. “Shiloh is basically like a family church. It is like a family here. It is a true family church just from the his-
POWHATAN – As his impending retirement on Oct. 1 approached, Virginia State Police 1st Sgt. D. Wayne Holland reluctantly accepted the thanks and accolades that went hand in hand with marking the end of a distinguished 48-year career. For Holland, it somehow seemed unfair or wrong to get recognized for something he has loved to do so much. It is a devotion that has never wavered to a career Holland said he almost feels he was made to do. “I never had any reservations about it. Chairman Bill Melton, who represents District 4, thanked Holland for his professionalism and integrity, which he said he has admired for the 22 years he has lived in the county. “Watching you lead by example has always been something I admired tremendously,” Melton said. “You have left us a better place than you found us, and I think that is what we are supposed to do.” David Williams, District 1, read the proclamation honoring Holland and then addressed him both as a supervisor and a friend. When Williams became a supervisors, he said Holland sat him down and explained in detail the role of the state police in the county and how the law enforcement agency could be of help to him. see HOLLAND page 5A

heading in the right direction. That is very important to me,” said McIntosh of Powhatan. “I think if we enjoy what we do every day, it is a better motivator than doing it because we have to. My goal is to encourage the guys that work for me to enjoy each day and what they do not because they have to but because they can.” As always, the caliber of employees nominated for the Employee of the Year award made the decision very tough for the selection committee that reviewed the nomination packets turned in by their fellow employees, Pat Weiler, county administrator, said when she announced the results. Weiler introduced the four nominees for the award at the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors’ meeting on Monday, Sept. 26. The recognition is given to the Powhatan County employee who in the past year best exemplified and demonstrated the values and qualities that
