Storm damages building, downs power lines By Laura McFarland News Editor
POWHATAN – Damage to a strip mall building housing several businesses, downed trees and power outages that lasted several hours or longer appeared to be the worst of the damage caused by steady rain and strong winds this weekend in Powhatan County. A shopping center in the 2600 block of Anderson Highway housing seven local businesses
was still closed as of presstime on Monday after a strong burst of wind tore a section of the structure’s metal roof off a day earlier, according to Durwood Stroud, whose family owns the building. The slanted metal roof covers a tar and gravel roof underneath that is still secure, so there was no internal damaged caused to any of the businesses by the wind damage, he said. Both ends of the metal
roof stayed secure while a section in the middle tore off and flew into the parking lot in front of the building. No one was injured in the incident. Stroud said on the evening of Sunday, Oct. 9 that he didn’t have a timeline for when the businesses will be allowed to open, because he has to work with his insurance company and remove the debris from

On Friday, Oct. 7, Powhatan Today news editor Laura McFarland offered the students tips on how to be reporters and gave them each a copy of the paper for inspiration. During their field trip, the students will gather information and write their own stories.
POWHATAN – Students and teachers aren’t as far apart in what they want out of school as they sometimes think, according to new Powhatan High School principal Dr. Michael Massa. Before students came back to class for the start of the 20162017 school year, Massa sent out a questionnaire to the high school teachers to determine what expectations the Massa educators should have of students and vice versa. More than 70 percent of the teachers’ responses for expectations were about being respectful, prepared and trying your hardest. Once school started back, Massa sent the same survey out to students. The majority of students’ opinions lined up with

County couple enjoys hair raising experience By Laura McFarland News Editor
POWHATAN – In a roundabout way, Patrick Quinn’s recent win of a national title for his mutton chops started several years before with some bristly kisses. In February 2012, Patrick was growing a short but full beard, and when he kissed his wife, Katie, she would get a little scruff rash on her chin. “She was like, ‘Can you cut the beard?’ I said yes, because I loved her,” said Patrick of Powhatan. “As every guy does, you shave a little bit

and laugh at yourself in the mirror. I shaved the chin. I walked in and said, ‘Haha, problem solved.’ I kissed her and she was like, ‘That’s OK.’ ” Thus, Patrick’s mutton chops were born, and he has stuck with the style ever since. The style, which requires 1.5 inches of the chin be clean shaven, is what he was still sporting more than a year later when he entered his first beard competition. And it was the style that won him first place in the Sideburns/Mutton Chops category at the Great American Beard and Moustache Championship, which was held on Saturday,
POWHATAN – With a month to go before the nation chooses its next president and only five days left before voter registration closes, online registration and absentee voting are making it easier than ever for Powhatan County residents to make their voices heard. There is definitely a solid and steady interest in Powhatan County residents both wanting to register to vote and also to apply to vote absentee, according to Karen Alexander, director of elections. The most pressing date regarding the election right now is Monday, Oct. 17, which is the deadline to register to vote. Citizens have until that day to register or submit changes if any of their information has changed. Then a building inspector can be called back to inspect the building and certify that it is safe to re-open all of the businesses. “It just happened and I’ve got a lot of people to talk to before I have any answers, Stroud said on Sunday. only business in the shopping center open on Sunday. He was getting ready to close his shop about 10 minutes before 5 p.m. when it felt like the building seemed to shake and rumble for about 15 seconds. The next thing he knew, he saw part of the metal roof landing in the parking lot. If anything good could be said of the situation, it was that it didn’t happen on a day when the parking lot would have been full of people and their vehicles, he said. “If other stores had been open, there would have been some injuries because where that roof landed in the parking lot is where most of that activity takes place down there at the Mexican restaurant. There would have been some people hurt, Holmes said. He added that he was

surprised that the damage happened to the building when it did because the wind had seemed stronger earlier in the day. “It didn’t seem to me to be too windy when it happened. It seemed to be windier this morning than it was this afternoon, he said on Sunday. Everardo “Lalo Fonseca, owner of El Cerro Azul, said he had examined his business and found there was no damage to the restaurant. He was hoping he would be cleared to open his restaurant by today, Oct. 12, but he wasn’t sure if it would happen. There were also several instances of downed trees and power lines. He added that all of the local emergency services crews had plenty of staffing who worked numerous hours to respond to the calls to help the community.

Powhatan Volunteer Fire Department Company 1 District Chief Carroll Smith said volunteers at his station worked through the night after the strong winds started. At about 6:30 p. m. on Sunday, he said he was just getting home after being out for 24 hours. “I hope it is quiet the rest of the evening, he said. According to the National Weather Service, peak winds over the weekend in the area around Powhatan County were between 30 and 31 mph. Although no rainfall total was released for the county, the areas around Powhatan recorded between 4 and 5 inches of rain. David Botkins, spokesman for Dominion Virginia Power, said that a total of 445,000 Dominion customers were affected by a power outage at some point in time between 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8 and a little after 8 p.m. on Sunday. He said the current number of customers in Powhatan County affected was relatively small with about 335 customers still out at 8:25 p.m. Sunday. The predominant number of outages were in eastern Virginia and North Carolina, and Dominion had already restored power to about half of them, he said. The Richmond Metro
area had between 4 and 5 inches of rain falling on ground that was already saturated because of previous rains. “When you have ground that is that saturated with more rainfall and then heavy winds, sustained and gusts, it is going to wreak havoc on your tree canopies and your tree trunks, he said. “So we had a large number of trees across our service territory, and those trees fall into overhead lines. When that happens, lights go out. In regard to restoring power outages, he said the restoration priorities are hospitals, 911 centers, fire and rescue, water pumping stations, and other forms of critical infrastructure. They move from there to areas where the largest number of customers can be restored at one time and then into subdivisions and rural areas. “The bottom line is that we will be working around the clock as quickly and safely as possible to get all of our customers’ power restored, he said. Botkins suggested customers sign up on Facebook or on Dominion’s website to receive text alerts to keep up with updates in real time about what is happening and even ask questions. Powhatan resident Katie Quinn, a member of the RVA Beard League, won first place in the Realistic Artistic beard category at the Great American Beard and Moustache Championship.
Full beards, either under or over 12 inches. Patrick, who is a member of the RVA Beard League, will hold the title in the Sideburns/ Mutton Chops category until the North American Competitive Beard and Moustache Alliance holds its next competition, which will actually be in 2018 in Richmond. “It was a pretty big feat for me. I was very emotional. I am not going to lie. I cried onstage – not ‘The Notebook’ type crying, but I got emotional on stage,” Patrick said. Patrick was also thrilled for Katie, who took home first place in the Realistic Artistic (fake) beard category. The couple started competing at the same time, with Katie alternating between entering the Realistic and Creative Artistic beard categories usually, but not always, populated by women. Katie said she was completely shocked when her name was called. She didn’t think
from around the nation, taken them to places they wouldn’t have visited otherwise and given them a fun outlet for an interest they love and can share.
Catching the bearding bug Patrick never really liked having a big beard, but a few months after the mutton chops were born in 2012, he heard about a beard competition the RVA Beard League would be holding. However, when he showed up at the competition, it was already sold out. In late 2012, the Quinns began attending the pub nights put on by the local league, and by the end of the year, Patrick had stopped trimming his still relatively short beard. The couple entered their first competition in March 2013 in Philadelphia, and although neither of them won, they both had a great time, Patrick said. He had the
shortest mutton chops in his category and she wore a beard made of green ribbon for the Creative Artistic beard category. On that trip, the Quinns met some really cool people, tasted their first authentic Philly Cheesesteaks, and had an entertaining time competing. “That was the spark – the bug that bit me,” he said. Before winning the national competition, that first show was his favorite beard competition related moment; it has now dropped to No. 2. After the Philadelphia show, the couple started competing several times a year. They have traveled to competitions in, South Carolina, Ohio, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York and even Texas. They almost always stick to competitions they can drive to by car and usually travel with other members of the league. They don’t compete on weekends when Patrick has his two sons from a previous marriage. Patrick has placed 26 times since he started competing, and most of the wins in the last year or so were either for the first or second spots, he said. Many of the same people compete on the east coast, and the Quinns both stressed the importance of the friendships they have developed by participating and the cities and states they have visited because they compete. One of the things Katie most enjoys about the people she has met is that they are welcoming to everyone, with or without facial hair. “It is very open and we love to have new members join us. We don’t discriminate against people whether you have facial hair or not. We have lots of members who have zero facial hair,” she said. They both also pointed out that a big appeal has been the good that beard clubs do. The Alliance’s competition in Denver raised more than $17,000 that was split between the Fisher House Foundation and Rocky Mountain Cancer Assistance. Patrick said he wins bragging rights, not money, by participating in beard competitions. He and Katie only attend competitions they know benefit charity.

as tea bags, candy Dots, and shotgun shells. After a few competitions, she tried the realistic category, which challenges contestants to create the most realistic facial hair possible, and liked it. She said she has several realistic beards she has used in other competitions. The one she wore in Denver and earned a first place with was actually one she borrowed that was made of real beard hair. Meanwhile, as Patrick’s beard became longer, he became increasingly dedicated to grooming it and making sure it looked healthy, which is a big component with judges. He takes vitamins and uses oils and other beard care products, even getting a sponsor in Badrick’s Skincare Inc., which is a line of products aimed at bearded men. He is always doing maintenance on his beard, and admits he probably spends more time getting his beard ready than Katie does getting completely ready to go somewhere. “There is a reason why when you see a lot of people out there with scraggly beards. It is either because they don’t take care of it or they don’t have the right genes for it,” Patrick said. His beard is now 14 inches long, and he will usually trim it before competitions and when needed to keep it healthy. The length is impressive for competitions, but has its drawbacks. Patrick said that most of the time, his beard is either braided or tied, especially at night. Gaining experience “If I don’t, my wife will roll over on it and I The last three and a will wake up in a lot of half years have been a pain,” he said. different experience for The rest of the time, the Quinns. he ties it for a reason. For Katie, it has represented the opportunity to exercise her creativity in a variety of ways. She has created numerous creative artistic beards, using materials as varied
Feeling a picture is worth a thousand words, Patrick walked across the room and then came back at a regular walking pace. The two sides of his beard, not anchored in the middle by his chin, immediately fly up toward his shoulders. “Any kind of breeze
and it turns into the wings,” he joked. Patrick’s beard is described as friendly mutton chops, which means his moustache connects to his beard. Added to having to take care of the length of his beard, he has had to adjust and see BEARD page 9A

Willey uses Twitter to defend Trump, attack Clintons By Louis Llovio Richmond Times-Dispatch
Powhatan County resident Kathleen Willey, who in the 1990s accused Bill Clinton of groping her in the White House, took to Twitter on Saturday, Oct. 8 to defend Donald Trump and attack Hillary Clinton. In a series of tweets and retweets that began about noon, Willey defended Trump, who apologized for a video released Friday that showed him using vulgar language about women. “DT said things that were wrong. He apologized. He never brutally raped anyone twice like BC raped Juanita. DT didn’t murder 4 men in
Benghazi, Willey wrote in one tweet. Juanita is in reference to Juanita Broaddrick, who alleged that Bill Clinton sexually assaulted her in a Little Rock, Arkansas, hotel room in 1978. Willey also took the Clintons to task for allegedly not apologizing to several women who have accused Bill Clinton of sexual improprieties. While Willey’s tweets began as a defense of Trump, they quickly escalated into a personal attack on the Clintons, accusing Bill Clinton of being a rapist and calling Hillary Clinton a “hag. In one tweet, she said Hillary Clinton called women who had accused Bill Clinton of sexual im-

propriety “bimbos, sluts, trailer trash, whores, skanks and asked, “When will u resign from ur campaign? And in another, she wrote that if Hillary Clinton wins the election, Bill Clinton “should be chemically castrated before he enters the White House to protect young women on Bring Your Daughters to Work Day. The campaign of Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee for president, did not respond to several requests for comment Saturday. Willey, a former White House volunteer who had worked on Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign, was a prominent figure in the late 1990s during the leadup to the then-president’s impeachment and subsequent Senate acquittal. On “60 Minutes in 1998, Willey claimed that on Nov. 29, 1993, Bill Clinton fondled and tried to kiss her in a private study off the Oval Office.

She had approached him to ask for a paying job because her family faced a financial crisis. Her husband, Richmond attorney Edward E. Willey Jr., faced hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt and was being investigated by the Virginia State Bar. Edward Willey’s body was found in woods in King and Queen County on Nov. 30, 1993. Authorities ruled that he had shot himself on the day his wife met with Clinton. Saturday’s tweetstorm came as the specter of Bill Clinton’s sexual indiscretions and the impeachment saga hang over his wife’s campaign. Trump – the Republican nominee for president – and his surrogates have brought up the issue several times on the campaign trail and warned it could become a topic of discussion in the Oct. 9 presidential debate. And Trump said “Bill Clinton has actually
abused women and Hillary has bullied, attacked, shamed and intimidated his victims when he apologized for speaking about women in vulgar terms on the video. About the time Willey was tweeting about the Clintons on Saturday afternoon, she left a voicemail message for a Richmond Times-Dispatch reporter accusing the couple of a continuing pattern of criminal activities. “Rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment are not infidelities as the mainstream media is trying to portray it. These are crimes and felonies, Willey said. “The Clintons have spent their entire lives doing two things: lying under oath and obstructing justice. They tried to get me to lie under oath in court to silence me. By doing that, they threatened the lives of my children. Willey did not provide details of any specific
threats, but her accusations that Clinton surrogates tried to keep her from testifying about her involvement with the president are well-documented. Willey had been scheduled to sit down for an interview with The TimesDispatch at 1:30 p.m. but canceled about an hour and 20 minutes beforehand. She cited the newspaper’s previous coverage of her as the reason for canceling. She did not respond to several follow-up calls. In addition to tweets about the Clintons, Willey posted the link to a video of Barack Obama using a vulgar term for a woman’s genitalia. The video, according to a 2015 BuzzFeed story, was shot in 1995 at the Cambridge Public Library in Massachusetts. It shows Obama reading a passage from his first book, “Dreams of My Father, and quoting someone he knew growing up.
Clean Business nominees sought Contributed Report
Hetzle Lee Richardson July 16, 1956 – October 4, 2015
It has been a year now, since God looked around His garden and found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He put His arms around you and lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb, so He closed your weary eyelids and whispered “Peace be thine. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone, for part of us went with you the day God called you home. We will love and miss you forever. Linda, Heather, Mandy, Family & Friends

The Powhatan Anti-Litter Council is now accepting nominations for the 2016 Clean Business Award. This is an honor bestowed upon one business each year that is making an exceptional effort to set an example of not only outstanding exterior of their business, but also having good clean practices on the interior. Criteria for selection includes: litter free grounds and parking, ownership commitment to recycling efforts, visible and well-maintained signage, attractive and well kept building(s), well maintained landscape, and a clear support of community environmental efforts. Businesses must have been in operation at their current location in Powhatan for a minimum of one year to be eligible. Council members suggest that residents take a look at local businesses
that encourage clean and attractive operations by complementing these business owners and employees on the value of pleasing surroundings. Recent Clean Business Award recipients include DRP Collision Repair, Capital Management Financial Advisory Inc, Aerations Plus, Yardworks, PIE Technologies, Garland’s Training Facility, the Mill at Fine Creek, Central Virginia Bank, and Chadwick and Son’s Orchids. The 2016 recipient will be awarded during a Powhatan County Board of Supervisor’s meeting in December. This is a great opportunity to acknowledge a business that has taken time and energy to make their work place stand out in a positive way. Submit nominations by the deadline of Nov. 1 to the Powhatan Extension Office, 3910 Old Buckingham Road, or email chowland@vt.edu.

er registration office, in the lower level of the Village Building, 3910 Old Buckingham Road, she said. There is special parking reserved for voters only outside the office, and curbside voting is available for voters with health related concerns. Just call the office at 804-598-5604 to let staff know you are outside waiting for assistance. The registrar’s office is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and also has the same opening hours the last two Saturdays before the election, Oct. 29 and Nov. 5. Note that the office will not be open for absentee voting on Saturday, Oct. 22 during the Festival of the Grape as in years past.
Voter registration As of Thursday, Oct. 6, there were 20,683 registered voters in Powhatan County, which has had 431 new voters reg-
isters since Aug. 1, Alexander said. That figure does not take into account voters who updated their address or transferred out of Powhatan County. On the same day in 2012, during the last presidential cycle, the county had 18,956 registered voters. During that same period of Aug. 1 to Oct. 6, 2012, the county registered 267 new voters. While presidential election years usually see a higher increase in voter registrations, Alexander said that other conditions probably helped. One was the new ability to register and apply to vote absentee online at vote.virginia.gov, an option that was not available in 2012. It streamlines the process and makes it much more convenient and user friendly. “The new online features that have been made available by the Virginia Department of Elections have been an amazing, well-used resource, she said. “At
times, it’s actually been used too much by some voters who continually re-register unnecessarily. Their hyper vigilance actually adds a tremendous amount of wasted time and manpower to process this multitude of re-registrations. She pointed out that people may research their registration status online or by calling the registrar’s office before re-registering an additional application. The increased use of social media to educate the public on important election news, voting requirements, and deadlines is another factor in increased interest, she said. There have been several third party voter registration drives throughout the county as well that have helped spark voter registration activity. In November 2012, Powhatan had an 81.7 percent voter turnout. Alexander said she is anticipating similar results for the 2016 election but hoping for an even higher figure. So far the county’s absentee totals

Massa said. “We are in the middle of creating signage and other reminders to reinforce to all people in the building, whether they are teachers, staff or students, to meet
those mutual expectations. Establishing those mutual expectations has been the change Massa said he has been most proud of making since starting work on July 1 for Powhatan County Public Schools. Admittedly, instituting new changes hasn’t been his top priority. Instead, he focused on soaking in all he could about school and community life. But having a universal set of expectations that are relevant to various aspects of school life – academics, sports, discipline and overall daily behavior – is about a consistent message, he said.

Security The Virginia Department of Elections and Powhatan’s Local Electoral Board are cognizant of the threats that have been made on the Nov. 8 election and have contingency plans in place if needed, Alexander said. “We currently vote on paper ballots here in Powhatan County, so we will have a paper record of all votes cast if there is a concern about the voting machine tabulator
being manipulated or tampered with, she said. “Our electronic poll books and voting machines are completely self-contained and are not connected to the internet in any way for remote hacking to be possible. All of our voting machines were meticulously tested for logic and accuracy for this election on Sept. 20 under the careful watch of our Electoral Board and also by representatives from each of Powhatan’s two major political parties. The machines were immediately sealed and are currently under secure lock and key, she said. Her office has also received, and continues to receive, official guidance from the Department of Elections on contingency planning for electronic pollbook and/
or voting system malfunction. “We feel as prepared as possible and continue to make the security and validity of this election our utmost priority, Alexander said. She added that her office has had great support from the county, with various county department directors involved in the election day preparations, including the sheriff, emergency management coordinator, fire and rescue, information technology, facilities management, the county administrator, the Virginia Department of Transportation and more. Breast cancer more than awareness month By Laura McFarland News Editor
T
he first time this writer started this column, it was a little more flowery and philosophical. I talked about how the different seasons and times of year often trigger certain thoughts and feelings, which is true. But, to be honest, it was all a way to lead into a reminder that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. That was the way it was supposed to go. But the truth is, I kept getting stalled while writing it. It took awhile to figure out why, but I finally narrowed down the cause. I am ticked off. Nope, you didn’t read that wrong. I did say ticked off. I know the purpose of awareness months is to do exactly that: Raise awareness. During this month in particular, women are reminded to do self breast exams regularly because they can be their own best first detection system. But I am pretty sure I and every other person in this country who have any kind of personal relationships at all are very aware of breast cancer – all forms of cancer, in fact. Having lost family and friends to the disease and having some people going through cancer right now who are very dear to me, the “C” word is rarely far from my mind. I don’t need a reminder from products with special labels to show they
have embraced the pink and promise “a portion of the proceeds” will go to cancer research. I’m not faulting companies for running those campaigns, but there is a part of me that rebels at the notion of someone saying they will give a few pennies of every dollar they earn to a cause you should care about, but only if you buy their product. Sorry for the tangent. It’s a pet peeve to see people using a disease that has caused so much pain as an effective fall marketing campaign. I had been thinking about this column for awhile, trying to decide how to approach a topic that has been done so often and in so many ways. I was trying to decide if there should even be a column since the topic is already so prevalent. I can tell you exactly when the direction of my thoughts started to change. It was when my phone rang and I was told that one of Powhatan’s own, Norma Woody, had died on Sept. 21. For those of you who may not remember, this writer interviewed Norma last year for a story about her having a book published. The book,
“Impressions Behind the Pink Ribbon: Writing Through the Laughter and Tears with My Metastatic Breast Cancer,” was a compilation of thoughts, poems and essays Norma wrote while going through treatment. It was at times funny, philosophical, insightful and heartbreaking to read. I had never met Norma before the interview about her book, and I didn’t see her in person again after that. We did talk on the phone a few times, and she kept a positive attitude despite the pain I know she was experiencing. After that call, I thought about the pain her family is experiencing right now at having lost a wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. And I thought about the obituaries we run every week and how many of them wouldn’t have been there yet if we had managed to eradicate this disease by now. And I thought of the struggles to come by the people – not the statistics – who are battling the disease now or don’t know that they will be doing so

oochland High School’s varsity football team is laden with a variety of multi-talented players, and it shows. The Bulldogs are in the midst of an undefeated season, and, each week, the team gains intensity and focus as they keep their eyes on a prize in the form of a state championship. While many of these players will undoubtedly capture post season individual honors, not a single one will wear the #1 jersey when the Bulldogs take the field. It’s not that the number is not available for use, but the simple fact is that it’s already been taken for the past five years by a member of the team who has the most challenged set of physical abilities, my son Jack. Five years ago, Coach Joe Fowler became involved in a nationwide effort each year to raise money and awareness for Muscular Dystrophy with an emphasis on research to combat Duchenne, the most deadly form of MD. Throughout the years, hundreds of Bulldog players have taken the time and effort to bend down and help Jack, to listen to his simple story and have been touched by its serious message. And Coach Fowler has been more than just a friend to Jack. His determined and positive approach in dealing with my son has provided us with more than just the welcomed support for a disease that has no compassion and often takes no prisoners. The coach’s commitment to Parents Project to Cure MD (PPMD) by holding annual games to benefit the cause is a lasting tribute to kids like Jack, who struggle to share in the joy of athletics. By sharing their generosity and kindness, Bulldogs, both past and present, have allowed Jack to
experience something that would never be available to him or others that suffer serious life-threatening conditions. Each year, I attempt to express my thanks and appreciation for Joe’s efforts to help Jack, and he waves me off with each effort. I can’t get the words out before he expresses his appreciation for Jack and his efforts, and the meaning of the message he brings to his players. It fits well with Fowler’s philosophy to coaching football, and preparing men for more than just challenges that come on the field of play. He prides himself more on the type of men that use the program as a springboard to meaningful and successful lives. While the wins and losses are always important, Fowler requires a higher calling for his players. Jack made his annual visit to Goochland for Coach to Cure last weekend, and torrential downpours couldn’t dampen the experience of meeting with players he considers teammates. More importantly, my family always walks away from these events with much more than the peace of mind of knowing Jack and the Bulldogs are participating in a united effort to treat and cure MD. No, it’s something equally as reassuring — a sense of knowing that we are not in this battle alone, and, somehow, all of those children who suffer with Duchenne are lifted by the efforts of kids who run, pass, and kick for children who cannot do any of those things. As for those efforts by this year’s staff of coaches, players, students, fans and the Goochland community, I am overwhelmed by their kindness and they are all number one in my mind. one day. And I got ticked off. But since my anger does nothing in the fight against cancer, this column will not end on that note. Instead, it will end with five ways the American Cancer Society suggested to help people fight breast cancer in particular. The full article can be seen at http:// www.cancer.org/cancer/news/features/five-ways-to-fight-breast-cancer. Volunteer your time to one or more of the programs out there that help with the physical, social, and emotional needs related to cancer. Look into taking part in research by participating in a clinical trial or study. Even if you are not a cancer patient, there are studies that look at lifestyle and health choices that might contribute to the disease. Make your voice heard by talking to your state and federal elected officials about studies and programs that deal with cancer issues such as prevention, early detection, and making sure patients can receive proper care. Participate in fundraising events like Relay for Life and the many related events put on throughout the year to fund that cause. Take charge of your health by adopting lifestyle habits that are known to lower your risk of cancer: Being active, eating a healthy diet, and limiting alcohol consumption, to name a few. Concert to explore Appalachian musical culture Contributed Report Immerse yourself in an evening celebrating the best of Appalachian culture. Enjoy the magical synergy of the gifted musical duo, Wayne Henderson and Helen White. Hailing from the “mecca” of traditional mountain music, Henderson and White provide a visit to an Appalachian porch. White’s simple, strong guitar backup provides a solid foundation for Henderson’s amazing guitar wizardry. The songs, fiddle tunes, amazing guitar playing and Henderson’s stories and tales allow the audience to experience authentic Appalachian culture. The concert will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14 in the Village Building auditorium, 3910 Old Buckingham Road, Powhatan. Seating is limited. There is no cover charge; however, donations will be accepted at the door. All proceeds go to support the Friends of the Powhatan Public Library. Wayne Henderson is a National Heritage Award recipient honored as a luthier and renowned finger-style Ap-
palachian guitar player. His skills as a master luthier are detailed in the book, “Clapton’s Guitar: Watching Wayne Henderson Build the Perfect Instrument.” Influenced by friends and neighbors, Doc Watson and E.C. Ball, Henderson has toured broadly in the United States, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East showcasing his lightning-fast, articulate playing. He’s also a gifted storyteller, regaling audiences with his “tales from Rugby.” Singer, fiddler, and tunesmith, Helen White has toured extensively with Henderson in the United States and Europe. Her compositions include works for theater and video projects and a Booklist honored recording for children. Powhatan’s Justin DeLeon (3) bursts through a hole in the middle of the Louisa defense to score his second of three touchdowns against the Lions. DeLeon found tough sledding early in the game, but Powhatan’s commitment to the run came around to give the Indians a chance to win.
Powhatan’s late rally falls short against Louisa By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
P
owhatan’s football team has become accustomed to down to the wire endings this season. While Justin DeLeon scored three touchdowns for the Indians in the second half, Powhatan fell just short against Louisa 28-20 at home. “We played hard and we made some adjustments at halftime,” Powhatan head coach Jim Woodson said. “The guys executed and toward the end, we just ran out of bullets.”
The Lions dominated the first half against Powhatan, especially on defense. The Indians normally consistent running game was stopped short against the Louisa front and forward movement was tough to find. Powhatan’s defense was stout against Louisa’s offense, but their rushing game was diverse, using a single-wing attack that featured multiple ball carriers in efforts to confuse the Indians defenders. “It’s very difficult (to prepare for),” Woodson said. “I thought we did a good job against the single wing. The problem is that they have athletes and they spread it out and made some plays.” Louisa struck first after a long drive after Job Whalen
scored from two-yards out. A two-point conversion made it 8-0. The Indians turned the ball over on their next drive and Louisa stuck quickly when RaQuan Jones ran for 65 yards on the second play of that drive. Whalen scored his second touchdown on the first drive of the second half from 24 yards to put the score at 22-0. But, the Indians came to life after Whalen’s second score. “We didn’t quit, made adjustments,” Woodson said. see INDIANS page 5B
Knights drop contest to Christchurch 15-12 By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Noah Dowdy (10) threw for two more touchdown passes after throwing for six touchdown passes last week.
Blessed Sacrament Huguenot came quite close to winning three games in a row. But, it just wasn’t meant to be for the Knights in a 15-12 loss to Christchurch on Oct. 8. “It was a very tight game against a very good opponent,” Blessed Sacrament Huguenot coach Chuck Robinson said. “It was a very back-andforth game.” The Knights scored on its first and third possessions of the second half
to battle back from an 8-0 first-half deficit by Christchurch. Quarterback Noah Dowdy continued his hot streak, throwing two touchdown passes for the Knights. One scoring pass went to Kemper Roudabush, his first of the season, and the other went to Michael Kemp. “(Noah) is doing a good job,” Robinson said. “We’ve had some growing pains with the offense and I think he’s continued to grow. One thing I like is we have some talented skill players but (Dowdy) is looking through all the
receivers. Our slot receiver Michael Kemp continues to do some great things. One of the biggest developments is (Dowdy) is working on using the underneath throws and not trying to find all of our receivers.” Christchurch then scored to make it 15-12 for the Seahorses. “We had the chance to put ourselves in good position at the end of the game, on the plus-side of the 50,” Robinson said. “We just came up a little bit short.” see KNIGHTS page 2B

Powhatan’s seniors lead Indians past Hornets By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
T
he Powhatan field hockey team found themselves in an unfamiliar situation on Oct. 6 against Orange. Orange had scored a goal on the vaunted Indians defense and Powhatan was behind. But, led by the seniors that the team was honoring for Senior Night, Powhatan scored three unanswered goals and won 3-1 over the Hornets.
“I am so proud of the way this team responded tonight,” coach Stephanie Brooks wrote in an email. “Orange came out very strong and we were definitely a little bit stunned. But, we were able to take some time to regroup and get back on track. They didn’t give up or doubt themselves. They continued to believe they would win the game.” Powhatan was able to generate a lot of offensive pressure on the Hornets in the first half, but no goals came prior to halftime.
After halftime, however, was a different story. Senior Hannah Adams started the scoring off with a big tying goal off a corner shot that she put in the back of the cage after a scrum in front of the net. Soon thereafter, Brie Burgio got in on the scoring as she scored twice to push the lead to 3-1. The second was on a feed from Adams and Danielle Bigham. The defense also locked down the Hornets’ attack in the second half as the field tilted toward the Or-
ange end. The fashion in which the Indians won, especially facing adversity, will pay dividends as the season marches on to the playoffs. “I think tonight was a good thing for us,” Brooks said. “We have not faced adversity in the past couple weeks. It was great to see that we can battle back and come from behind to win. We have not been in that position this season.” Adams, Burgio and Ellie Lancaster were the three seniors honored prior
to the game and all three have been a major part of the program rising to the heights they have achieved thus far this season. “It’s really surreal,” Burgio said. “For four years, I’ve been playing and seen the seniors walking on Senior Night. It was crazy being the one walking this year.” “Being on this team is the best thing about my high school,” Adams said. “I love everyone on this team.” “I don’t feel like a senior,” Lancaster said. “All
the captains have stepped up this year. I’m proud of everybody.” Brooks wrote that Senior Night is always “bittersweet.” “I am thankful that I have been able to spend three seasons with Brie, Ellie and Hannah,” she wrote. “I have seen them grow on and off the field into amazing young adults. I will miss them all for so many reasons.” Powhatan faced Western Albemarle on Oct. 11, followed by Monticello on Oct. 13.
Powhatan girls lead the way in quad-XC meet By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Powhatan’s cross country teams had a very busy, but also very successful, week. On Oct. 4, the Indians hosted a quad meet at home with Manchester, Monacan and Thomas Dale. Powhatan’s Lindsey Fanz held down the home course advantage by winning the girls race with a time of 21:43. “I’m very proud because our girls did really well,” Fanz said. “It’s a season best for me right now, so I feel like I did very well. I think I could have picked it up on the first mile, but overall I’m pretty pleased.” Fanz finished 12 seconds ahead of second place Morgan Waddill of Thomas Dale. “Lindsey is a calm and focused runner,” coach Paul Smartschan wrote in an email. The Indians had four of the top 10 finishers in the race and edged out Monacan 35-38 to win the race. Meghan Remillard finished fourth with a 22:00, Caileigh Dintino was

I think we can go all the way to states this year.” John Cavedo carried the banner for the boys team during the quad meet at Powhatan, finishing ninth with a 18:53. Alex Hillen was 11th with a 19:10 and Colton Vosburg was 12th with a 19:22. The Indians finished second in the meet with 64 points. Manchester won with 17, Monacan was third and Thomas Dale was fourth. “Both the boys and girls are rolling now for sure,” Smartschan wrote. “Veteran runners are starting to get back in top form, while newer runners learning to train and compete outside their comfort zones.” One wrinkle from the first home meet of the season was this course was run backward of that first home meet. “This was only the second time we’ve incorporated some of the awe-
some new trails recently created around Powhatan High School,” Smartschan wrote. “Our athletes and runners from visiting schools did enjoy the course.” In the B race, Ashley Van Buskirk won the race with a 24:51 as the Indians defeated the Chiefs 2532. Powhatan’s Sam Wentworth finished sixth in the boys B race with a 20:03 as the Indians were second, behind Manchester and ahead of Monacan. Powhatan also participated in the Glory Days Cross Country Invitational at Bull Run Park in Manassas over the weekend of Oct. 8-9. Over 70 teams from around Virginia and the entire East Coast participated in the event. In the girls varsity race, which featured 220 runners, three Indians finished in the top 115. Fanz earned a medal with a 12th place finish with a time of 20:40. The winning time was by Catherine Gregory of Forest Park with a 19:47. Remillard was 68th with a 22:17 and Dintino was 113th with a 23:07. On the boys side, Pow-
games is always a difficult thing for young guys and realizing that every play has an outcome on the game. My kids have fought all year. This was a bit disappointing to not get the win.” The game was an important one according to Robinson as getting a win against the Division-
II Christchurch team would have really helped the Knights’ playoff hopes. “That would have helped put us in the driver’s seat for our playoff hopes,” Robinson said. “It made things a little more difficult for ourselves. It’s not impossible.”

THIS WEEK’S ANSWERS
Indians Continued from page 1B
“The players came out, fought and kept us in the ballgame.” DeLeon started off Powhatan’s first drive of the second half with a 45 yard run and then scored three plays later to get the Indians on the board. After Louisa turned the ball over on downs, DeLeon exploded to the end zone with a 75 yard run and in the blink of an eye, the Indians were down 2214. Louisa coach Mark Fischer said that it was “a totally different” second half for his team. “It was a battle,” he said. “Gotta give Powhtan all the credit, they came out the second half and they came after us. We just did not as well as we did in the first (half). But, that’s waht makes Friday night lights so much fun. We just held on for dear life. It was a fun game.” Whalen scored for the third time on the night to make it 28-14 Lions midway through the fourth quarter. Powhatan started to engineer one of their signature comebacks when backup quarterback Jacob Moss completed a pass to DeLeon, who then flipped the ball backward to Ross Lewis, who turned the play into a big gain. DeLeon scored his third touchdown soon thereafter to bring the Indians within one score. Then, Powhatan attempted and recovered an onside kick and moved the ball efficiently to around the Louisa 30 yard line. But, the Lions defense
was able to hold the Indians short of the tying touchdown and time ran out after Moss couldn’t complete a pass on fourth down to keep the game alive. Moss started his first game under center as starting quarterback Jacob Oglesby is out with an injury he suffered last week against Western Albemarle. “We’re proud of what they did,” Woodson said. “We’re a good football team and we hung right with them. We had some key injuries. I’m really proud of Jacob Moss, who did a heck of a job to battle under these conditions and this much pressure. The rest of the guys did well. “We fought and did a nice job. We just have to build on it and clean up
some areas. We have some key injuries that we’re really worried about.” Powhatan travels to Charlottesville on Oct. 14 for the first away game since the Indians traveled to Midlothian in the season opener. The Indians will then return home on Oct. 21 for the final home game of the season against Albemarle. Powhatan will then hit the road for the final two games of the regular season against Fluvanna and Monticello. The Indians are still in very good shape in the Group 4A East region standings even after the loss to the Lions.
