Powhatan Courthouse Village 3880 Old Buckingham Road
On the National Register of Historic Places, this historic district is noted for the courthouse and the old jail which now houses the Powhatan Historical Society. Other historic buildings include the old clerk’s office, the old treasurer’s office, and the Courthouse Tavern. A walking tour of the Village is available upon request. Contact 804-598-5605.
Emmanuel Episcopal Church 2390 Emmanuel Church Road
This beautiful church, circa 1842, is a classic example of Gothic Revival architecture. The cemetery holds the graves of some Confederate soldiers. Emmanuel is also on the National Register of Historic Places.

Nichol’s Store 4500 Old Buckingham Road
Built in the early 1920s, this little country store served the community well until 1996. It was also a post office during that time. The current owner conducts auctions at this site.
Do Drop In General Store 5920 Old Buckingham Road
If you need a break, stop by this lovely old store for a snack and a drink.
French’s Tavern 6100 Old Buckingham Road
Built between 1730 and 1734, Thomas Jefferson was one of its many owners. It was named for Hugh French who operated a tavern on the property for 28 years. The tavern is on the National Register of Historic Places and now serves as a private residence.

Mosby Tavern 2625 Old Tavern Road
Mosby Tavern was built in 1740 and played a key role in the history of both Powhatan and Cumberland ounties. From 1749 to 1777, the tavern was used as a courthouse and prison for Cumberland County. When new county lines were drawn, Powhatan court was held here for two years before moving to the present location. At the onset of the Revolutionary War, the tavern was also used as a meeting place for county militia. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a private residence today.

Old Tavern Junction 5500 Anderson Highway
This charming old store has survived since the early 1930s.
Derwent 6000 Derwent Road
After the Civil War, General Robert E. Lee and his family stayed here from late June 1865 until mid September 1865. It is said that from Derwent, General Lee helped the nation heal from the devastation of war through his inspirational and uplifting writings.

Muddy Creek Baptist Church 3470 Trenholm Road
Founded in 1774, General Lee and his family attended services here during their stay in Powhatan. It is also the site of a one room schoolhouse that operated from 1875 to 1920.

Belmead Mansion 5000 Cartersville Road
Built in the mid 1800s, Belmead was once part of an African American school for men. It began as St. Emma Industrial & Agricultural College in 1895, later to be named St. Emma Military Academy after an ROTC program was introduced in 1947. The school closed in 1972 and a majority of the school was demolished soon after. There are several historic cemeteries and buildings on this beautiful property overlooking the James River. Horse lovers come to ride the over 20 miles of trails. This architectural wonder is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Provost (Oakville) 4801 Cartersville Road
Built around the turn of the nineteenth century, Provost was built on a main stagecoach route from Richmond. It has served as a general store, ordinary, Post Office, office of the Bureau of Vital Statistics and now is a private residence. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places.

St. Francis de Sales School for Girls End of Bell Road
Established in 1899 by Sister Katherine Drexel (who later became a saint), St. Francis overlooks the James River on the property adjoining Belmead. It was a high school exclusively for African and Native American girls that closed its doors in 1970. St. Francis has been abandoned for 40 years and is in desperate need of repair. Efforts have been underway to preserve this historic building. From the magnificent architecture to the intricate details of stained glass and marble mantles, this historic gem is quite something to behold.

Lee’s Last Bivouac 2630 Huguenot Trail
After his surrender at Appomattox, General Robert E. Lee made camp for one last time on April 14, 1865 in this area before riding into Richmond.

Fine Creek Mill 2434 Robert E. Lee Road
On this 10-acre property, you will find remnants of an old gristmill; remnants of Fine Creek Manor built in the 1700s, but destroyed by fire in 1928; an old gatehouse; Fine Creek School; and several other historic buildings that served this small community. This historic district is on the National Register of Historic Places.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church 2245 Huguenot Trail
Established in 1844, this church and its cemetery are on the National Register of Historic Places. The oldest grave is dated 1846. Many of General Robert
E. Lee’s relatives are buried here, including his brother and a nephew, as well as, many other Civil War veterans.

Manakin Episcopal Church 985 Huguenot Trail
This church’s history dates back to 1701, when the French Huguenots first settled in the area after fleeing persecution from their country. On this property you will find the old church dating to 1895 and a monument dedicated to the French Huguenot settlement. This property is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Huguenot Springs Cemetery 911 Old Confederate Cemetery Road
A Confederate convalescent hospital was established here in 1862 at the site of an antebellum spa and hotel. Locals volunteered their time and limited resources to care for the soldiers here. A mass grave at the site contains the remains of more than 250 soldiers.

Ewell Crosses the Appomattox 3091 Genito Road
On April 14, 1865, Confederate General Richard Ewell, who commanded the Richmond area forces, faced challenges crossing the Appomattox River near here while trying to join Lee in Amelia. Finding the Genito Bridge unfit, the Confederates crossed near here on the Richmond and Danville Railroad Bridge at Mattoax Station.

Red Lane Tavern 3009 Lower Hill Road
Built in 1832, this house operated as a rural tavern from 1836 to 1845. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and now serves as a private residence.

Slow road to forming Powhatan County In spring 1607, Captain Christopher Newport led a small band of adventurers from Jamestown on a voyage up Powhatan’s River, now called the James River. On the third day, the group sailed to a place occupied by the Arrohattoc Indians, one of the tribes ruled by the Indian chief Powhatan. The explorers became the first Englishmen to set foot on the soil Deed book from the clerk’s office that was to become Henrico County. In 1634, Virginia was divided into eight shires, or counties, one being Henrico, which included the land that would one day form Powhatan County. In 1728, the first petition to form a new county was presented to the legislature and granted, resulting in the formation of Goochland County out of all the land above the fall line, indefinitely west. The land was separated into two parishes: all north of the James River became

Northam Parish, all the land south of the river became Southam Parish. In 1748, the inhabitants south of the James River petitioned the legislature and all of that land, comprised of Littleton and Southam parishes, became a new county called Cumberland. The seat of government sat in session at Mosby’s Tavern near Deep Creek, a structure still standing at the corner of Old Tavern Road and U.S. Route 60. In 1777, amidst the tense climate of the 13 colonies at war with Great Britain, a petition to the General Assembly led to another division and the formation of Powhatan County. A seat of government central to the new division was set on Ligon’s land at the head of Fine Creek. It was to become the town of Scottville, the present Powhatan Courthouse Village. In 1850, a small portion of Chesterfield County was annexed, creating the current boundaries of Powhatan County.
Naming Powhatan County Powhatan County burst forth from the first acts of the Virginia Commonwealth in 1777 as fiercely as the first shot was fired at Concord, Massachusetts. Powhatan represented a name as far removed from former practices of naming places as possible. The legislators were determined to renounce any suggestion of allegiance to England, members of the royal party or places. The most awesome of names came to mind - that of the most fierce warrior Powhatan, who, numerous times, had resisted the incursion of the English settlers upon the shores of his mighty river, so named in his honor - the Powhatan - that river which today is called the James River.

Research
Powhatan Historical Society Two retired school teachers, Dorothy Cosby and Helen Lawton, started the Powhatan Historical Society in 1975. The society sought to preserve and present Powhatan County’s history through the acquisition of manuscripts, printed source materials and artifacts relating to the county’s history. Other significant acts performed by the group were: placing a bronze plaque at Derwent, Robert E. Lee’s post-war sanctuary; taking on several projects and duties for the county’s Bicentennial Celebration in 1977; securing a Coat-of-Arms; sponsoring many illustrious guest speakers at the society’s meetings; Photo by Laura McFarland receiving permission from the coun- Powhatan Historical Society meets to discuss preserving Corinth Church. ty’s board of supervisors to use the Old Jail as the society headquarters in February 1994 and renovating it; offering college scholarships to local students through the years; planning the Powhatan County 225th Anniversary Celebration in May 2002; dedicating a permanent Historic Garden exhibit in June 2006 behind the Old Jail as part of the Jamestown 2007 celebration; beginning a cemetery inscription project in 2007; acquiring Grace Episcopal Church and beginning an ongoing preservation project there, and leading the charge for a community effort to preserve Corinth Church.
The Powhatan County Clerk of the Court’s Office has a wealth of information for those wishing to know more about the people and property in the county’s past. The office has 897 deed books, the oldest dating to the county’s founding in 1777. The clerk’s office has been slowly working to restore and digitize the county’s oldest and most at risk record books, and so far, 12 books have been restored, said Teresa Dobbins, clerk of the circuit court. In addition to the deed books, visitors can also look at Powhatan’s will books, land books, chancery books, old board of supervisors books, ledgers on vagrants and the mentally disabled, and discharge books, she said. All of these are public record. Fees apply to reproduce or copy the images.
Did you know? Powhatan County is divided by the east-west highway known as either Route 60 or Anderson Highway. Route 60 was renamed the James A. Anderson Memorial Highway in 1969. Anderson served as chairman of the Highway Commission in Virginia from 1941 to 1957, and under his direction, the George P. Coleman Bridge, the Rappahannock Bridge, and the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel were built, and 12,000 miles of secondary roads were hard-surfaced. In 1913, the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors approved and appropriated $325 to pay the expenses of 38 former veterans to attend the 50th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Gettysburg. The first traffic light in the county was installed in the Flat Rock area in 1993, and a second one was installed at the intersection of Routes 60 and 522 in 1994. The Huguenot Springs Hotel and Spa were incorporated in 1846 and, during its heyday, included a hotel, a spring house with bathing facilities and cottages lining both sides of the complex. During the Civil War, it was converted into a convalescent hospital for Confederate wounded. Today on the grounds there stands a marker and communal grave for more than 250 soldiers who died at the hospital. Only the names of 92 are known. Powhatan’s Festival of the Grape will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016 in the Historic Courthouse Village, 3600 Old Buckingham Road. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the gates for adults 21 and older, $15 in advance and $20 for youth ages 13 to 20, and free for ages 12 and under. There is no non-drinking adult ticket. Hops and Barley Festival The Powhatan Rotary Club’s Virginia Hops and Barley Festival will be held from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2017. The location is to be announced so check the website. All proceeds from the event benefit various charities and community groups that The Powhatan Rotary Club supports. Ticket price includes unlimited tastings to try the different Virginia micro-brew beers and listen to a lineup of bands. Non-taster tickets will be available and include unlimited soft drinks. Food will be for sale. For more information, go to www.vabeerfest.com. Mud bogged down cars at the 2016 event but it could not keep spirits down. Organizers are considering a new location for 2017 but promise that the upbeat spirit, great selection of beers, plenty of vendors, rocking music and more will be the same.

Skippers Creek Vineyard Co-owners Charles and Debbie Zacharias operate this small vineyard from March to the end of October on a property that has been in Debbie’s family for more than 75 years. The vineyard’s name comes from Skippers Creek, which runs through the back of the property. The vineyard carries several chardonnays and viogners; a Meriwether that is a blend of reds; a malbec, a blonde and a petit verdot, depending on the year and while supplies last. Visitors may come to the vineyard’s tasting room to relax and enjoy the selections as well as the beautiful rural ambience all around.

Bodie Vineyards Family-owned and operated since 2008, Bodie Vineyards was the first licensed farm winery in Powhatan County. Owner Clyde Bodie has been making wine for about 40 years, but in the early years he only gave it away to family and friends. When he retired as a civil structure engineer, someone suggested he turn his hobby into a small business and sell his wines. The winery offers two varieties of wine for sale, a Michaux Blanc and a Rochette Rouge. They can be found at the vineyard during the set open hours. Clyde Bodie also sometimes has a booth at the Powhatan Farmers Market during its regular season. A pavilion and a winery sit on a hill next to the vineyards. In good weather, people can sit outside and do tastings and enjoy the view. In hotter and colder months they can be inside enjoying their wine.

Expected to open in spring 2017, Fine Creek Brewing Co. will be the newest enterprise of Mark Benusa and his mom, Lisa, who own and operate The Mill at Fine Creek. U
nspoiled, authentic, rural landscapes are essential to certain film and television projects, and fortunately, parts of Powhatan County fit that bill exactly. Some of the great rural landscapes in Powhatan have lent themselves to creating a super palette for the artistic needs of films and television shows such as “TURN: Washington’s Spies,” “Lincoln,” “John Adams” and “Field of Lost Shoes,” said Andy Edmunds, director of the Virginia Film Office. Most of the filming done in the county is consistently done at the State Farm property owned by the Virginia Department of Correction, which cooperates with the Virginia Film Office to make it possible. There is a historic, vacant prison (James River Correctional Center), 3,000 acres of varied farmland, and a backlot with sets from the HBO series, “John Adams.” The “TURN” TV series is the biggest project recently to use Powhatan County for filming, with three seasons shot at the State Farm and the fourth and final season to start production in late 2016/early 2017. Having a television series is like having a content manufacturing operation – it touches all parts of the economy, Edmunds said. “ ‘TURN’ in particular has an economic impact over a single season north of $55 million for the entire region,” he said. “It is not just about their great production experience. They have had a great personal experience being here, so much so that many of them have decided to stay here in the off season.”

The State Farm property is the center piece of the show’s story, where crew built Setauket village and church, Abe’s Farm, and the wharf set which played as New York harbor, said Tom Trigo, location manager. The property also provided locations for woodlands, creeks, river, lakes, fields, and country roads. “It is one of the best period ‘backlots’ in the country,” Trigo said. The greatest challenge of filming is finding locations free of modern clutter that also contain enough historical elements that allow crew to film scenes with a minimum of disguise or having to erase things digitally, which is no small task these days, Trigo said. The State Farm site gives crew the freedom to do that, he added. More than 75 percent of the TV series’ crew are Richmond area locals, more than a few live in Powhatan County, and the rest have stayed in Richmond, he said. The fourth and final season will film in late 2016/early 2017 and air in 2017.

“Vampires in Virginia” is a feauture film that was shot on location in late summer/early fall 2014 in Virginia, including several spots in Powhatan County. The movie is a modern take on the vampire story, treating vampirism as a virus that people catch, said Kahil Dotay, who is the director, writer and producer. He classified the movie as part horror, thriller and romance. The locations in Powhatan County where the movie filmed were Chadwick and Son Orchids Inc., Bellville Farm, and county roads such as Old Buckingham Road and Route 522. “Everyone was welcoming. The Powhatan Chamber of Commerce and the Powhatan Sheriff’s Department were of great help,” Dotay said. The film is set to have its Virginia premiere in 2017 in the Richmond area. owhatan County has a good number of locations that host meetings, small parties and other gatherings, but for those big days in people’s lives, there are four events venues that are specially designed to help meet their needs. In their own way, The Mill at Fine Creek, Fairview Farm Events, War Memorial Cultural Arts and Community Center and the Cozy Acres Campground Clubhouse each tie in the special rural nature of the county. While weddings are some of the biggest events they see all year, these event venues are equipped to handle a number of different kinds of social gatherings to make them truly special occasions for the people participating.
Fairview Farm Events is an ADA compliant rustic chic heated and air conditioned barn estate venue for people who want a relaxing farm estate weekend for their wedding or special event. Although personal touches are encouraged, the barn is decorated professionally by season and comes furnished with antique farm tables, chairs, ceremony seating and a longer list of free props available, all of which can save couples on their budget. Added to that are beautiful chandeliers and bistro lighting in the barn and rustic chic pavilion, which both hold 245 guests. There are multiple ceremony sites, fire pits and arbors. Photo opportunities are abundant at the farm, such as a large gazebo. They have also added the new Blanton cottage, which overlooks a large pond. Owners Debora and Blanton Gordon believe that “families who stay together for an event like this will have a memory for a lifetime rather than a fleeting moment.” Family owned for nearly 100 years, Fairview Farm was transformed into a wedding and event venue in spring 2014 as the owners are passionate about preserving the rural character of the farm for generations to come and making the farm available for couples and families from all over the nation. Mark Benusa said his venue offers people who entrust them with their special occasions complete privacy and acute attention to detail. “Being that it is owner operated and family owned, we really never stop analyzing things and pushing ourselves to be better. If something is brought to our attention, we do our best to address it as quickly as possible,” he said. The Mill at Fine Creek is also distinguishing itself by adding cottages that can be booked by both guests and members of the public. The 13 cottages are scheduled to open in spring 2017.
War Memorial Cultural Arts and Community Center Built in 1952, the War Memorial Building was a community center and armory that featured a large gymnasium, lockers, office space, meeting rooms, and a large kitchen. Through the years, it was used for events such as youth basketball games, school events, community dinners, dances, club meetings, auctions, sales, and even a sewing factory. Its size and array of amenities lend themselves to be used for a variety of events, including theatrical performances, weddings, bridal showers, rehearsal dinners, private and public parties, family related events like birthdays and reunions, workshops, and business meetings. The grand hall can hold an event for up to 300 people, the dining hall and meeting room combined can handle 50 guests, and the board meeting rooms are for up to 20 people. People can rent rooms year round as well as chairs and tables to use there. The events venue boasts reasonable pricing as well, a great location in the Village area and the rich history of Powhatan’s past that were marked within its walls.

owhatan State Park is making big strides forward in fall 2016 by increasing amenities to attract visitors, including the opening of its water/electric campground and a third canoe launch along the James River. The River Bend Campground, which is expected to open in early November 2016, will offer visitors a chance to camp under the stars at 29 new campsites equipped with water and electricity. The campground will be open each year from March 1 to Dec. 1, beginning in 2017. The sites are suitable for RV or tent camping and are served by an expansive bathhouse with good privacy options. Previously, the only option for overnight guests was a canoein campground along the scenic James River. A third canoe launch finished construction and opened in early October 2016. This launch, located 2 miles from the first one, will allow for shorter floats on the James River and increase opportunities for more park programming involving the river.

The River Bend Campground’s sites each have plenty of space for an RV or tents, holding up to Photo by Laura McFarland six people, and are equipped with water and electricity. They also have a picnic table, fire pit, lantern holder and space to park two vehicles.
Exploring the park
The park has 8 miles of hiking trails for people to explore. Some are only accessible on foot, but a large percentage is multi-use. A temporary road improvement project in fall 2016 at the intersection that leads to the park entrance opened access to the park for horse trailers, which means riders on horseback can now join cyclists on the multi-use trails.
On the open water
The opening of a third canoe launch further along the James River within the park boundaries creates new opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing for people who don’t have as much time to spend on the water. More guided canoeing trips will also be added by the park.
A few more amenities
In spring 2017, the park will add three new Photo by Laura McFarland yurts for rent for people wanting to experience camping in a slightly less primitive way. The yurts, which are based on the traditional Mongolian framed tents, will have basic furniture but no running water.

elebration of the Horse was born out of the need to raise funds to support Powhatan’s 4-H and FFA youth organizations and their many activities, educational opportunities and competitions throughout the year. There was also a strong desire to bring awareness to the large equine community in Powhatan County, said Max Timberlake, president of the Powhatan Farm Bureau Federation. The third annual Celebration of the Horse will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at Rocky Oak Farm, 2693 Rocky Oak Road. Rain date is Sunday, May 7. All proceeds to benefit 4-H and FFA youth programs. Farm Bureau and Powhatan Cooperative Extension work together on this collaborative project with the Powhatan 4-H and FFA youth organizations. The event has been building steam as it highlights all things equine in the county, with a schedule that includes children’s activities, a corn hole tournament, educational displays, food, silent auction, hay rides and more. In addition to being a 4-H Qualifying horse show, the horse show portion of the event is also open to adult participants. In its third year, the event will expand to include livestock and exhibits highlighting the overall impact of agriculture in the county. Powhatan Equine Rescue League
Powhatan Equine Rescue League is a faith-based, Christian nonprofit organization started in 2014 and dedicated to the welfare and rescue of abandoned, neglected and abused horses. Volunteers provide the horses with rehabilitative and compassionate care until such time a loving permanent home is located. Organizers view educating and developing relationships with potential adopters as valuable in establishing lifelong commitments between the horse and adopter.

Lonesome Dove Equestrian Center marked a huge milestone in spring 2016 when organizers helped the nonprofit organization’s 2,000th veteran go for a therapeutic horseback ride since it seated its first rider in 2008. The driving force behind the nonprofit is Clint Arrington, executive director and founder of Lonesome Dove, who is dedicated to helping veterans emotionally and physically Photo by Laura McFarland with the help of some truly gentle horses. Lonesome Dove’s goal is to improve muscle tone, balance and mobility of physically disabled Veterans, while providing mental stimulation, enhanced self-confidence and self-esteem. At the same time, Arrington works to create an enjoyable experience for all participants. Services are at no cost to the veterans in the belief that they have already paid by their service to our country. Lonesome Dove has an indoor riding arena with a mounting ramp for use by wheelchair-bound and physically challenged veterans. A viewing area is provided for those wishing to watch friends and family ride. When the weather is nice, the rides take place in an outdoor arena that has a covered picnic area nearby.

Mesa Vista is a nonprofit therapeutic riding center that is certified with the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) and is a member of the Therapeutic Riding Association of Virginia. It serves traditional riders and riders with a variety of special needs, including autism, cerebral palsy, developmental delay, spinal cord injury, stroke, Rett Syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, Down syndrome, ADD/ADHD, vision/hearing impaired, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis. Clients range from 2 years to 75 years old. The therapeutic riding helps in the areas of core and other muscle group strengthening exercises; stretching exercises; balance work; focus/attention work; confidence and communication work, and basic to advanced riding skills. Helen Messenger, president and founder, established Mesa Vista Farm in January 1995 and added therapeutic riding a year later. The farm evolved into Mesa Vista Therapeutics Inc. and became a nonprofit organization in December 2005, making its primary mission working with special needs individuals. To help support the therapeutic riding program, Mesa Vista offers traditional lessons and horse boarding. The nonprofit is an all-inclusive program, and challenged riders often ride with able riders 12 and up, who “make great volunteers,” she said.

golf courses Independence Golf Club Originally a Tom Fazio Design, the Championship Course at Independence Golf Course underwent an extensive renovation in 2014 led by Richmond based golf course architect Lester George in conjunction with superintendent Dan Taylor, and owner Giff Breed. Renovations included regrassing the fairways and greens, ridding the layout of an overabundance of bunkers and strategically removing trees to get air moving, resulting in healthier turf. In addition to the course upgrades, the club formed incredible partnerships that have allowed it to take the overall golf experience to another level. Here are the most notable: l Champion Bermuda greens; l Five sets of tees ranging from just over 5,000 yards to more than 7,100 yards from the tips; l Ground game is prevalent, especially in front of and around the putting surfaces, where closely-mown areas mean players have a number of choices, including running the ball onto the green.

Other improvements included beverage carts were upgraded to two Lexus CT hybrid “player assistant vehicles” to provide a safe, quiet and eco-friendly alternative; golf carts were upgraded and equipped with GPS enabled tablets; on-course water coolers have been replaced by Diamond Spring cold water dispensers throughout the course, and the snack bar was converted into a Cafe Zata, which offers fresh specialty coffee, breakfast and lunch options.

The PYAA is a volunteer organization that sponsors athletic activities open to all the youth of Powhatan County. Baseball is affiliated with Little League Baseball and softball is affiliated with Dixie Softball. Basketball is the most recent addition to the options available, with a 3-on-3 league in the winter and late summer and an all-star tournament session in the spring.
here are many ways in Powhatan County to engage in youth sports, whether you want to pick up a baseball bat, toss a lacrosse ball, or kick a soccer ball. From several Powhatan Fury travel soccer teams winning their 2016 leagues to four of the Powhatan Youth Athletic Association softball teams making it to the state tournament in 2016, and the Powhatan Little League teams facing off against the best in the District 5 tournament, the county has a lot to offer in terms of youth sports. It isn’t all about the success on the field, however. Powhatan youth sports offer the opportunity for the youth of the area to get involved in a sport, get exercise and learn what it means to be part of a team and life lessons such as leadership, humility and sportsmanship. “Powhatan is a great place for youth sports because we are able to provide a variety of sports throughout the county such as baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball, lacrosse, golf, volleyball, track and field, fishing and hunting,” Powhatan Little League president Jay Heckle said. “Powhatan has nice facilities for each sport providing our kids the environment they need to learn and excel in.”

Powhatan’s nationally recognized Performing Arts program offers students a wide variety of musical experiences beginning in kindergarten and continuing through graduation. Pocahontas Middle School and Powhatan High School music programs
are both designated as Blue Ribbon Schools based on superior performing ensembles. The high school band program is a Commonwealth of Virginia Honor Band. The secondary level offerings include: Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Concert Choir, Show Choir, Marching Band, Percussion Ensemble, Indoor Percussion, Jazz Ensemble, Winter Guard, College Preparatory Music Theory and studentled chamber ensembles. PCPS offers 22 varsity sports and 12 junior varsity teams. The rides include a 100 mile century, a 100 km (62 mile) metric century and a 50 km (31 mile) half metric century. All three bike tours are on gently rolling, country roads with scenic views. Powhatan State Park will hold National Get Outdoors Day events on Saturday, June 10, featuring ranger-led programs and self-guided activities. Archery and spear throwing games will begin at noon and a wildlife hike will be held 2 p.m., both meeting at the playground area. The 32nd annual James River Batteau Festival is an eight-day river festival that will be held from June 17 to 24, 2017, starting in Lynchburg and ending in Powhatan County at Maidens Landing. Participants float down the river on batteau similar to those once used to ferry goods in the late 1700s/early 1800s. They dock every evening at points along the river, including a neighboring county, Cumberland County, on June 23, before they pull the boats out on the final day upon arriving in Powhatan. July 2017 The Childress Foundation’s fireworks extravaganza will be held on Saturday, July 1 with gates opening at 3:30 p.m. and a packed schedule of events lasting until the fireworks show after dark. The event is at Vista del Lago, 1960 Old Tavern Road. Admission cost will be announced closer to the date, with proceeds benefiting the Virginia Veterans Association and the Virginia War Memorial. September 2017 The annual Powhatan Village Run 4-Miler is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, starting and ending at the Elizabeth Randolph Lewis YMCA. The Village Run has been a Labor Day weekend tradition in Powhatan since 1989. Awards are given to individual competitors by age division and to parent and child teams at the elementary and middle school levels. The race benefits Powhatan High School cross country and track teams. The Powhatan Lions Club’s sixth annual Powhatan Labor Day Parade will be held on Monday, Sept. 4. This event brings out some of the charm and small town feeling of Powhatan County.
