About 40 volunteers showed up on the morning of Friday, Dec. 16 to handle the final delivery of gifts for the Powhatan Christmas Mother’s 2016 season. See photo display on page 3.

OWHATAN – Agriculture-related groups in Powhatan County brought the “Farm to the Table” for Powhatan’s Food Pantry recipients this holiday season. Powhatan Farm Bureau, along with the FFA Alumni, Powhatan High and Powhatan Junior FFA Chapters, Powhatan 4-H, and Powhatan’s Cooperative Extension jointly sponsored a food drive throughout the months of November and early December to feed the hungry of Powhatan. Powhatan Junior’s FFA chapter conducted a contest at Powhatan Middle School for all classes. Karyn Jackson’s Tribe Time collected 90 items making it the largest class donation at the school. Jackson’s class won Krispy Kreme donuts as a prize. Several teachers also offered a one-for-one matching program for their classes. A large assortment of food products was collected, including fruit, meat, cereal and vegetables. Powhatan 4-H Clubs also donated food items to complete 11 Thanksgiving Complete Meals. Powhatan’s 4-H Teen sorted, bagged and delivered the meals to the Food Pantry in time for families’ Thanksgiving. One local farmer donated a large amount of frozen ground beef while another donated ice cream for the freezer. Powhatan Farm Bureau president Max Timberlake said, “Our goal of 500 items was far exceeded with the items collected. Monetary donations were also given.” About 1,000 canned food items were collected by the combined groups and delivered. Youth and adults helped collect the food from various sites in the county and deliver the items to the Powhatan Food Pantry. Since none of the folks who made the delivery had visited the new location, Jim Tubbs of the pantry gave them a tour of the facility and let them stock the shelves with the items they brought. This project also was highlighted on the Farm Bureau’s float during the recent Christmas Mother Parade. The “Farm to Table” float included Powhatan’s Century Farm families along with 4-H and FFA members pushing grocery carts full of food along the parade route. Timberlake added, “We thank the farmers who have been feeding us for hundreds of years and especially the community who donated at this very special time of the year.”
