POWHATAN – Dozens of Powhatan County emergency services workers and community members responded on Tuesday, April 11 to make sure a 32-yearold quarter horse named Belle safely escaped a swimming pool where she was trapped. It took members of the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office and Fire and Rescue along with many other volunteers working together to pull the horse to safety more

than an hour after she fell into the pool. The horse escaped with one cut that had to have a few stitches and some superficial cuts. She was obviously shaken up, but otherwise fine, especially given her advanced age, said her owner, Lisa Langley of Powhatan. She has had Belle about 27 years and said the horse has seen her through some

Sheriff’s office to hold drug take back Contributed Report The Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office’s biannual Drug Take Back Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 in the main lobby of the Powhatan County Courts building where the sheriff’s office is located. The Rural Substance Abuse Awareness Coalition (RSAAC) will join the sheriff’s office once again to assist in the endeavor. seeks to inspire, equip, and educate the citizens of Goochland and Powhatan on the issues of substance abuse. Many Goochland and Powhatan community organizations, including schools, churches, justice agencies, youth organizations and government, are members of this coalition, including the sheriff’s office. The total amount of drugs taken in during the October 2016 Take Back Day was 65.6 pounds. Support group aims to aid caregivers Contributed Report The number of persons serving as caregivers for a friend or family member over the last 10 years has risen significantly and this trend is expected to continue. According to the most recent statistics on caregiving from the National Family Caregivers Association, nearly half of the U. S. population has a chronic condition. Of that number, approximately 41 million are limited in their daily activities while 12 million are unable to live independently or even leave the house. Caring for someone who has a chronic illness (i.e. dementia, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, depression, bipolar, etc.) can be an isolating experience. Caregiving can also be an exhausting experience, taxing both the physical and emotional resources of loved ones. There is now a community resource to help per-

JROTC cadets complete tasks to be accredited

Event to promote youth health

Contributed Report On Feb. 8, the Powhatan High School JROTC Cadet Battalion went through its JPA, which was done by U.S. Army personnel from Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The evaluators were Erik Shay and Charles Perry. The cadets were evaluated in several areas. They had to develop a continuous improvement plan for the battalion to improve retention and recruitment efforts by raising the awareness and interest at the elementary schools, middle school and the high school levels. As part of the service learning project and briefing, this year the cadets chose Backpacks of Love as their CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS project. The program raised enough money to donate PHS JROTC cadets complete tasks to be accredited. $2,000, which is enough to feed 15 children for one school year. As part of the drill and ceremony, the platoon had to execute a total of 23 different commands, which they did with extreme precision. The Color Guard had to execute a total of 34 different commands and they did an absolutely phenomenal job. The end result of the day was a perfect score for the Indian Battalion. To this date PHS is the only school to receive a perfect score out of the six states in 4th BDE (Vriginia, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.).

year as the barber shop’s owner, and in May, the local business will celebrate 61 years in existence since Franklin started it. Earlier in April, Franklin stopped by the shop to join Meyerhoeffer in talking about some of the history of the shop, which is now located at 2405 Anderson Highway, tucked back on the side of the building holding Fine Creek Realty. When Franklin first started, the barber shop was located inside May’s Grocery Store. When asked why he thought the business could last for so long, Franklin, who turned 89 on April 15, said the key was always to “treat people right. You’ve got to treat them right. Then a good man took it over. That is one thing,” he said, pointing to Meyerhoeffer. “You just enjoy doing it,” Meyerhoeffer added. “You enjoy the people coming in. That is the reason we both cut hair.” When the Flat Rock Barber Shop opened on May 13, 1955, Franklin and his wife, Nora Rose Franklin, had moved to Powhatan after he worked in Newport News for five years. Donald May said he wanted to have a barber shop inside his grocery store, and Franklin saw it as a good opportunity. “Everybody in Powhatan knew one another. It was just a pleasure in talking with them and serving them as a barber,” Franklin said. In the early years of cutting men’s hair, it was mostly “flat tops, GIs and business cuts,” but Franklin cut longer hair, too. When he started, it cost 75 cents to get a haircut, and customers often came every two weeks. Eventually, the barber shop went from a separate room in the grocery store to an attached shop next to it that May added on, Franklin said. Often he would give first haircuts and still be cutting a boy’s hair years later. When he retired as a full-time barber in 1990, Franklin said he was cutting fourth generations of families that came to his shop. Meyerhoeffer took over the business and reopened the shop on Tuesday, April 3, 1990, again as a one-man operation.

However, between 1991 and 1998, Franklin continued to come in on Saturdays and when Meyerhoeffer went on vacation to work part-time and help him out. When he finally stepped away for good, Franklin said he “missed the people but I didn’t miss the work.” “I got to make a lot of close friends through the barber shop. They are still my friends. That is the beautiful part about it,” he said. Meyerhoeffer and his wife, Linda, moved to Richmond in 1989 from Augusta County, where he had been cutting hair part-time. His wife’s work led to the move, but Meyerhoeffer used the opportunity to start cutting hair full time. “I worked in a factory during the day and cut hair at night. This was a good opportunity for me to go full time,” he said Meyerhoeffer found out about the shop in Powhatan and talked to May about taking over for Franklin, who wanted to retire but didn’t want to leave his faithful customers without a good

barber. “For a few years, they would always talk about how Mr. Franklin cut it, but it was OK. They got used to me. After somebody cuts your hair 30 to 35 years, it’s hard to switch. But it wasn’t a problem. I was getting old and new generations,” Meyerhoeffer said. Franklin added that if Meyerhoeffer wasn’t a good man, May wouldn’t have rented to him. Meyerhoeffer kept the barber shop next to the grocery store for 12 years before moving to his current location on the side of the building with Fine Creek Realty. Neither the move nor eventually going to three days a week hurt business, he added. “People would get used to the same person cutting their hair. They liked their haircut so they would keep coming back,” he said. For the time being, Meyerhoeffer said he intends to keep cutting hair until he gets tired of it or his health gives out. “It gives me a change during the week to come in three days a week and

work. A lot of my regular customers come in so I really enjoy it,” he said. Flat Rock Barber Shop is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays. Tucker receives Budner Award Contributed Report The Kathy Budner Award is given annually by the Powhatan Chamber of Commerce to a chamber member who has “demonstrated a selfless contribution to local businesses and to the chamber … a chamber member whose service and performance positively reflects excellence as demonstrated through their work ethic and contributions to the Powhatan community.” This definition can be restated in two words: Carson Tucker. He TUCKER is the 2017 recipient of the Kathy Budner Award of Excellence. After enumerating Tucker’s endeavors for Powhatan County, its people and organizations during the Chamber’s Annual Celebration at Independence Country Club, presenter Dan Jones summed up Tucker’s involvement by quoting Tucker’s motto: “Service to people and organizations: I put my time, effort and money where my mouth is.” A handful of the organizations to which Tucker gives his time, effort and money include: Powhatan County; Coalition of Powhatan Churches (to which he donates 100 percent of his board of supervisors’ paycheck); Powhatan NAACP; Farm Bureau; Free Clinic; Habitat for Humanity; Master Gardeners; Master Naturalists; Belmead on the James; Capital Regional Land Conservancy; American Farmland Trust; Disabled American Veterans; World War II Veterans Committee; Vietnam Veterans Memorial Association; U.S. and Virginia Holocaust museums; Leadership

Metro Richmond; and the James River Association. Tucker currently represents District 5 on the board of supervisors, a position he’s held for 10 years, being re-elected to a third term in 2015. Among other offices, he is past chairman of the Powhatan County Board of Equalization and a past commissioner on the Powhatan County Planning Commission. He retired from a distinguished career with Philip Morris as director, leadership planning and organization development. He continues to teach leadership, organization development, change management, executive coaching and strategic planning across the country. In accepting the award, Tucker said, “I am both humbled and proud to be so honored by the county’s business owners, entrepreneurs and sales people because they are the bedrock upon which our economic viability sits. I salute the chamber for being a leader in this field.” The award honors Kathy Budner, who was instrumental in starting the chamber in 1992 and served as its executive director for 16 years. During that time, membership spiked from 42 to more than 230. Larry Lyons was the first recipient in 2010, followed by Dan Jones, 2011; Ruth Boatwright, 2012; Kathy Grasty, 2013; Susan Ash, 2014, India Cox, 2015; Connie Moslow, 2016; and now Carson Tucker. As the 2017 recipient, he was presented with $1,000 by the Chamber to donate to the organization(s) of his choice. He selected Belmead on the James and Michaux-St. James Foundation.

tough times, so she is extremely relieved that she is safe. She added she was astonished how many people showed up to help save Belle. They were amazing and everybody called somebody to try to help figure out what to do, she said. “I am just so happy. I have taken care of this horse for too long for something like that to happen to her. I am so grateful to all the people here today. They were so wonderful. It is amazing how people come together, especially for an animal, she said. Capt. J.S. Searfoss with the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office said he wasn’t surprised by how many people showed up to help as horses require a great deal of manpower to make sure neither the humans nor the animals involved are injured. “If we hadn’t had the fire department, rescue members, members of the community and the sheriff’s office here with everybody working to-

gether, it would have been a different outcome I am certain, he said. Langley was gardening inside the gated pool area and letting the horse graze nearby when the 1,100-pound animal unexpectedly wandered onto the covered swimming pool and two of her legs fell in, she said. When Langley and her daughter, Carley, tried to release the pool liner to free up Belle’s legs, the horse fell in the full pool. “It had a protective liner on it that they say can keep a cow out, but I guess that’s not true because she stepped in it and fell through it. She was trapped with two legs in the liner and part of her standing on the liner, Langley said. “My daughter Carley and I unhooked it all and got it away from her feet but then we couldn’t get her out. So we called 911. The pool hadn’t been cleaned because of winter, and Belle was traumatized because of shock and couldn’t move her back legs at first, she said.

Carley Langley said the main problem once the liner was cut away was trying to keep Belle’s body temperature regulated, “because she was battling hypothermia before we were worried about her drowning. She was in the water at least an hour. Searfoss said the first animal control officers arrived at about 11:44 a.m. As soon as they arrived, they called for additional support. “Every available unit showed up as well as the fire department and rescue and we started calling resources locally – a horse farrier and a large animal vet, he said. Another call was made to someone as far away a Culpeper to get “assets rolling in case this dragged on, he said. But one of the horse experts provided a plan and fire hoses were used to assist the horse out of the pool at about 12:44 p.m. Mats were used to give Belle traction on the bottom of the pool because it was slippery. Chief Steven Singer, fire and rescue chief, said the horse was ner-

vous in the tall water, so the pool was drained to put her more at ease. The fire department had to pump out a few thousand gallons of water because initially “the horse was panicking and going in the deep end. We were worried about her drowning, Searfoss said.

probably, so you can get hurt, Searfoss said. After Belle was safe and they knew she was going to be OK, Carley said she was amazed thinking back to how everyone was working together to save her family’s horse. “It was an unprecedented event and no one knew what to do, which meant everybody was shooting out ideas. It was a really collaborative effort, she said. “Someone was like ‘we need to pour hot water on her,’ ‘we need to put hot water in bags and hold it against her vital organs,’ ‘what if we use a hose instead of a rope,’ ‘what if we cover the steps with rugs?’ No one knew what to do so everyone was just coming up with ideas. A live video of the final moments of the rescue can be found on the Powhatan Today’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/powhatantoday. “She wasn’t as scared because she was in the pool. She was scared because she was about to drown. She could barely keep her head up, especially in the deep end. That got her more upset and thrashing around, he said. “Ultimately, once the fire department got the water level down, she seemed to calm down a lot. Then she could stand there and see a lot more and not have the sensation that she was getting ready to drown, I guess. I am not a horse expert. A few initial attempts were made to extricate Belle using sheets but didn’t work out, Searfoss said. No one was sure how long the rescue would take so people were calling to surrounding areas trying to get advice, he said. “Luckily we have local folks who know a lot about horses. They are the real heroes. We were doing the best we could until they got here, but it is better to have people that know what they are doing around horses. It is a 1,200-pound animal

EARTH DAY Continued from pg. 1

a three-month family membership at the YMCA, two tickets to Powhatan’s Festival of the Grape and more. Have paper you want shredded? Bring it with you! Powhatan’s Anti-Litter Council has a paper-shredding truck scheduled for the Earth Day celebration. Anti-Litter is also sponsoring Recycling Day from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 22 at the Powhatan County Fairgrounds on Route 60. During the April 20 event in the Village, the winning Earth Day posters will be unveiled. These posters are being created by Powhatan’s fourth-graders and judged by the Women’s Club of Powhatan County. Prizes are gift bags from Powhatan State Park. Before things get started on the Courthouse Green, come to the county’s animal shelter on Old Plantation Road for the annual tree planting. A native Red Maple (Acer rubrum) will be planted and blessed during a short ceremony starting at 2 p.m. This is the ninth tree donated by Watkins Nurseries. Bring dog and/or cat kibble or canned food, treats and/or toys for the animals. There are many ways people can help in the effort to reduce, reuse and recycle. The accumulative effect of many people

doing a few things makes a true impact. In addition to recycling at Powhatan’s Transfer Station, here are some ideas to consider in reducing individuals’ impact on the earth: Eat locally grown food and enjoy produce in season to avoid costs and emissions associated with shipping. Grow your own garden. Buy organic foods. Don’t opt for paper or plastic at the grocery store … bring your own bags. Don’t litter, including cigarette butts. Car pool or drive a fuel-efficient car. about the care needed for the recipient. Throughout this process, it is of utmost importance to maintain the overall health and wellbeing of the caretaker. A second goal of the group is to provide caregivers with professional information and resources to make the caretaking process a little easier. Guest speakers are present at some meetings. On April 6, Taylor Lee, a representative from the Richmond area Alzheimer’s Association, spoke about dementia. In May, Pastor John Heming will lead a discussion about the spiritual challenges of serving as caregivers. Other future topics of guest speakers include nutritional needs, addiction, stress management, and hospice care. Residents demonstrate their character By Laura McFarland News Editor

P

owhatan may not have the biggest population in Virginia, but we are not a little people. That may sound kind of confusing but hang in there with me. Last week’s column talked about spring arriving and the large variety of events taking place all over the county. It may have sounded a little on the peppy side, but having lived in much larger localities that didn’t offer half as many true community events, this writer finds it exciting that Powhatan is so proactive in what it offers. And when you consider that the majority of those events are raising money for local nonprofits or charities, it is even more amazing. Little did I know when I wrote that column that some more “spring events” were going to pop up in a very different way to show the true character of this county. The first occurred on Friday, April 7, when a group of 45 people marched from Hollywood Baptist Church to the Powhatan County Courthouse in a peaceful demonstration protesting what they saw as a grave miscarriage of justice. Regardless of whether you agree with their message, you should admit they went about shar-

ing it the right way. If you think back over the last few years, similar incidents of perceived racial injustice have sparked outrage that led to rioting, looting and worse. This group of people respected law and order, voiced their pain and outrage in a clear and moving way and only ever asked the community to show any discontent by advocating peaceably with elect officials and judicial review boards. This demonstration was the very definition of what is laid out in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which guarantees the “right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” The right of a citizen to peacefully parade and gather and express their views is guaranteed by the freedom of speech and the right to peaceably assemble, and, whether you agree with a group or not, that is a freedom you should always wish to see protected. In fact, the only reason I could think of to take issue with this march, other than not agreeing with what the protesters were saying, is if you happened to get stuck in traffic on Old Buckingham Road for the short time that the group was walking down the road. The other example of this county doing itself proud came just last week, when Powhatan’s emergency ser-

vices responded to a distress call from a resident whose horse had fallen into her swimming pool. Many of you have probably seen the dramatic video on the Powhatan Today’s Facebook page of the moment the horse was pulled from the pool with the help of dozens adding to her waning strength. What I didn’t get to capture because of not arriving earlier was the crowd of people that continued to grow over the course of an hour, brainstormed ideas to both comfort and rescue the aged equine and even made calls to other communities to try and seek help. That back yard was full of people who genuinely wanted to help and to see that situation end well, and that is not a small thing. Fortunately, the horse did make it out relatively unharmed. But realistically, even if she hadn’t, what the people who came to help her did wouldn’t have been diminished. It just wouldn’t have gotten as many views on Facebook. Despite the pervasive air of pessimism that seems to dominate discussions these days on almost any topic you can imagine, this writer believes people do want to see the best in each other and be good neighbors. To me, that will never be a small thing. Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@ powhatantoday.com.

General Assembly tackles budget, taxes, vision screenings, and more By Lee Ware

Bills of local interest

Contributing Columnist

Our 2017 General Assembly has done what it had to do on behalf of taxpayers and crucial public employees and services. We closed a $1.24 billion budget deficit, did so without increasing taxes, and by surgical amendments provided overdue salary increases for state police, sheriffs’ deputies, teachers, and other state employees. That we had again to wrestle with a budget shortfall is indicative of the fragility of the long and still-modest recovery from “The Great Recession” into which the national economy slipped a full decade ago. Job creation and revenue forecasts for the remainder of the 2016-2018 biennium are only guardedly encouraging. In addition to broad bipartisan cooperation on budget priorities, we were able also to stop two bills that would have impaired the ability of localities to undertake expansion of broadband services and, separately, wireless communications services. Supervisors in Chesterfield, Powhatan, and Goochland were regularly in touch about these respective bills – House Bill (HB) 2108 and 2196. The final versions, radically improved, will protect against boondoggles such as occurred in Bristol’s ill-fated attempt to expand broadband services, while allowing counties such as Powhatan and Goochland to continue their projects without undue red tape. The most controversial bill of session proved to be HB 1900. Patroned by Speaker Bill Howell, HB 1900 would have stiffened penalties for hunters retrieving dogs from private properties and was generally perceived to be advocated by owners of large private hunting preserves at the expense of middle-class hunters from rural areas. When debate – and dust – settled, the bill was defeated by one vote, 48-47. All told, my office received nearly 4,000 voicemails or emails about this one bill – the vast majority opposed to it.

My counterpart in Assembly, Senator Glen Sturtevant, sponsored at the request of Powhatan’s Board of Supervisors a budget amendment to allow the Department of Juvenile Justice to sell the Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center property to the county for “economic development purposes.” However, the proposal was not included in the budget as finally advanced by the Senate. My HB 1415, submitted at the unanimous request of Powhatan supervisors, and amended to include Goochland at the request of Goochland supervisors – on their 4-1 agreement – authorizes both counties to impose a transient occupancy tax. The rate of any enacted tax could not exceed 5 percent, and revenues exceeding 2 percent could be spent only to promote tourism. For Frank Brown of Fluvanna County I submitted HB 1417. This bill would have required drivers both approaching and immediately preceding a stopped school bus to cut on their hazard lights. The House Transportation Committee declined to advance the proposal. Assisted ably by Phil Sherman of Powhatan and Savannah Kelleher of ADS Ventures I patroned HB 1432 to allow skilled laborers and hobbyists to carry automatic knives – “switchblades” in old parlance – without fear of criminal prosecution. The bill was passed by large majorities, but was vetoed by the governor. My House Bill 1455, submitted at the request of Chesterfield supervisors, will aid Chesterfield in its taxation and rehabilitation of certain properties undergoing commercial or industrial development. My House Bill 1408, for which Tim Gresham of Powhatan was a tireless advocate, will increase the number and quality of public schools’ vision screenings for younger pupils. Studies show that younger children who receive proper eye care register marked improvement in academic performance.

Some Lions Club officials worried that the bill would impinge on the Lions’ vision programs, so we amended the bill to ensure that Lions would not be adversely affected. To expand the vision screening codified by HB 1408 I also introduced a budget amendment for $1.9 million. The House committee on Appropriations whittled the figure to $300,000 for the biennium, but that amount was excised in the budget conference with Senate Finance members. My HB 2424 would have provided limited immunity for individuals who, after an incident in which they acted in self-defense, promptly reported the matter to authorities. Because it was determined that a budget amendment would be required to provide for the services, the bill was not advanced. But, I will reintroduce it in the 2018 Assembly. To help close the budget gap I carried HB 1470. This bill would have modestly reduced tax credits for land preservation. My colleagues on House Finance who admire the popular program declined to advance the bill.

Other major issues A good deal of my own work this session was devoted to my duties as chairman of the Finance committee of the House. Whereas the Appropriations committee spends taxpayers’ monies, the Finance committee, by handing all bills having to do with revenues and taxes, in effect raises a goodly sum of the monies in our general fund. Significantly, our House-proposed budget requires no new taxes or fees and is, as required by the Constitution, wholly balanced. My legislative priority post-session will be to work toward preparation of a single bill to comprehensively reform the commonwealth’s tax code. My goal is to have viable legislation ready to recommend to whoever is elected the new governor of Virginia at the 2017 general elections in November.

Veto session No fewer than 40 bills passed by the legislature were vetoed by Governor Terry McAuliffe. These included bills to ban localities from restricting the enforcement of federal immigration laws, a bill to bar government from punishing anyone who, owing to religious convictions, refuses to participate in same-sex weddings, and a bill to allow homeschooled children to participate in public school sports, etc. When we reconvened on April 5 to consider the governor’s vetoes, these vetoes were sustained, for a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate are required to override a gubernatorial veto. No doubt patrons will reintroduce these bills in 2018.

Working with local officials To large constituencies and also to local officials in each of the four counties of the 65th District I was in continual communication. Supervisor Mike Sheridan of Fluvanna was regularly in touch, Supervisors Manuel Alvarez and Susan Lascolette of Goochland were able to visit several times, Powhatan’s Chairman Bill Melton kept me abreast of the county’s interest in the broadband and wireless bills, and Mary Ann Curtin, as usual, ably managed communications with Chesterfield’s supervisors. School board members and officials from all four counties visited me at the Capitol.

Thanks to constituents As usual, hundreds of constituents sent me emails, regular mail, called by phone, or were able to come by the General Assembly Building for a personal visit. Both the Powhatan Leadership Institute and the Goochland Leadership Enterprise brought dozens of new county residents to Assembly to meet with me and to observe the House see ASSEMBLY, pg. 9

paid to have the benches purchased and installed, along with a plaque that names who is being remembered, said Ramona Carter, director of public works, which is handling the bench project. All three line the outer wall that runs along Old Buckingham Road, facing away from the courthouse. Currently, the benches have been dedicated to late local author Norma J. Woody, late Sheriff Floyd W. Simpson, and a group bench in honor of Powhatan Lions Club’s deceased members. The memorial bench project has been a winwin situation for the county, Carter said. On the county’s part, the benches are aesthetically attractive, paid for by those purchasing the benches, and provide additional places for people to sit and rest, whether they are in the Village for a special event or simply enjoying a beautiful day. The benches also provide people a way to recognize loved ones in a meaningful way, she said. “I think it is good for the people who are donating them because they get to memorialize their loved ones. The three that we have are very meaningful. These people were a part of the community and they contributed a lot to the community, she said.

Honoring the memory of loved ones Richard

Woody

of

Powhatan was the one who first approached the board of supervisors with the idea of allowing memorial benches. He wanted a way to honor his late wife, Norma, who died on Sept. 21, 2016, after a long battle with cancer. He said she always loved sitting in the Village area and watching the world go by and especially loved events like the parades that roll through twice a year. “When she was in hospice and dealing with cancer, she didn’t feel like going out for a long time but it would have been nice to get something to eat and sit there and nibble on it, he said. Woody said he wasn’t notified when the first bench for his wife was installed in February, so he was surprised when he drove by one day shortly after and saw it. It was cold out, but he still stopped to take a photo of himself on the bench, he said. “It is hard to describe. It was a bittersweet moment. It was great seeing it but seeing her name on there with the dates brought back home she wasn’t there anymore, he said. The second bench, which was installed in March, was purchased by Clara and Thomas Justis in honor of Floyd Simpson, who was the Powhatan sheriff from 1936 to 1972. Simpson died on March 25, 1983, at the age of 82. Thomas Justis said Simpson, who was his uncle, was “awful good

to me throughout the years and I thought it was a nice idea. The placement of the bench was wonderful because it sat on the lawn of the courthouse, where he spent a great deal of time, but had a good view of the building that used to house Ford Simpson Motor Co., where Simpson sold Model Ts with his father in the 1920s, and served as sheriff. The building currently houses the Powhatan Chamber of Commerce and other local businesses. “I think it’s great. So many times when people go away from here, they are totally forgotten. This is a little something. They have a picture there in the sheriff’s office, but not everybody sees that. This is a lasting memory, he said. The most recent bench, which was also

installed in March, was purchased by the Powhatan Lions Club in honor of its deceased members. The group discussed the idea at a board meeting and decided it would be a good way to not only honor the club’s deceased members but help the county at the same time, said Jim Washburn, past president. “One of our basis is to serve the community. ‘We serve’ is our motto, he said. “This is a way we could serve the community by providing something to sit on and improve the appearance of the area. On top of that, the benches will be a great spot to watch the Labor Day parade that the club sponsors every year, he said. The club members were pleased the bench was placed close to where the announcers’ stand is

located during the parade.

County benches While the benches purchased thus far have been placed on the courthouse lawn, they can actually be located on other county properties, Carter said. Courthouse placements have had to be approved by a judge. When the board passed the policy allowing them, there were several conditions that have since become the county’s policy regarding the benches. Included in that is a condition that the “benches are permitted to memorialize a departed family member or friend, or, at the discretion of the county, to commemorate a special event. Donors are responsible for the costs of the donation, according to the policy. The cost of the bench-

es is $1,200, which is mostly to pay for the bench with a plaque on it and shipping from the Bench Factory in Batavia, Illinois. A portion of the price also covers the estimated cost of having county employees install the benches. “People don’t have a choice on the style of the bench or the plaque. They will all be the same, Carter said. She did point out that the county is responsible for the upkeep of the benches, which might include painting them every few years. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot pitcher Kemper Roudabush delivers a pitch against Amelia Academy on April 12. Roudabush allowed three hits and a run in the first inning, but didn’t allow any further runs and struck out three Patriots batters.

Knights blow past Amelia Academy By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

A

fter being down by a run after the first inning, the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knights baseball team didn’t panic. Instead, they went to work at the plate. Powered by a 12-run fourth inning, the Knights rolled past visiting Amelia

Academy 15-1 at E.M. Palmore & J.D. Gregg Field on April 12. “I thought we played pretty good defense while the bats came along,” Knights head coach James Poore said. “We did what we had to do.” Both teams came up to the plate aggressive and ready to swing at and hit pitches. Amelia Academy scored a run in the top of the first on three hits.

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot responded with a leadoff single by Trey Gregg, who advanced to third and was knocked in by Robbie Kurtz to tie the game. Carter Davis worked a walk later in the inning and pinch runner Dion Butler would score on a passed ball to give the Knights the lead. The Knights were also aggressive on the basepaths against Amelia Academy.

“We ran the bases really well,” Poore said. “We stole a ton of bases.” While starter Kemper Roudabush was hit in the first inning, he buckled down in the second for a 1-2-3 inning, which included two strikeouts. The Knights wouldn’t add to their lead until the third inning, when Davis tripled to lead the inning off and scored when Coleman Smith doubled to the outfield. see KNIGHTS, pg. 3B

Hildebrand scores five goals as BSH rolls 6-0 By Ellis Hopson Contributing Writer

Watching a soccer match at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot can feel a bit like watching a game of chess. They both appear to involve deep strategical and tactical thought. If we are talking about chess, then head coach Grayson Lovern plays the role of the chess player as he constantly adjusts his strategy and reacts to the moves of the opposition. The results speak for themselves, as the Knights have established a stout dePHOTO BY BILLY FELLIN fense and a free-flowing attack during a Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Reed Hildebrand dribbles around some perfect start to the 2017 season over Kenston Forest defenders en route to one of his five goals that he scored seven games. against the Kavaliers during the 6-0 win on April 12. Hildebrand has been Blessed Sacrament displayed all of a profilic goal scorer for Blessed Sacrament Huguenot and his ability to these qualities in a recent 6-0 victory

over Kenston Forest. Blessed Sacrament was on the front foot from the start, dominating possession of the ball and peppering the Kavaliers’ goal with shots during the opening 15 minutes. As the trend continued, Coach Lovern made a swift decision to shift to a formation with three players at the back, pushing more players higher up the pitch in an effort to overload Kenston Forest’s defense. The Knights eventually settled on a 3-4-3 formation around the 20th minute, a switch that paid almost immediate dividends. “We typically play four at the back and four or five in midfield, but Kenston put eight players behind the ball.

t was a day of joy, remembrance and history at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot on April 12. After being postponed earlier in the season, there was no such threat of another rescheduling of the field dedication ceremony to honor the late Ellis Palmore and the late Jim Gregg. The two men were both involved with the baseball team at Huguenot Academy and Blessed Sacrament Huguenot. In addition to owning businesses in Powhatan County for many years, Palmore with Palmore Lumber and Gregg with Powhatan Pharmacy, contributed their talents as coaches for teams in the Powhatan Youth Athletic Association as well. As the Palmore and Gregg families assembled with the 2017 edition of the Knights baseball team along the first base line prior to the game against Amelia Academy, many friends of the family and supporters of the team gathered along the fence line for the ceremony. Former Blessed Sacrament Huguenot baseball coach Gary Brock, who himself was honored last year when his number 26 was retired and a banner hung on the outfield fence, took to the microphone to speak about the two honorees. Brock spoke on how passionate both Palmore and Gregg were about their service and role with their athletic teams and shared stories and memories on

how the two men lived their lives and left their indelible mark on the Knights athletic community. He also noted how he believed that both were smiling down on them that day. After Brock’s speech, Colleen Palmore and Carol Gregg, the widows of the two honorees, each threw out a ceremonial first pitch at the newly named E.M. Palmore & J.D. Gregg Field. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot baseball coach and athletic director James Poore said that he believed there was no one better to receive the honor than Palmore and Gregg. “For me, I went to school at Huguenot Academy and knew personally Ellis Palmore and Mr. Gregg,” he said. “I don’t know of any two more deserving people in the Powhatan community. If anyone could be an example of how to live your life, it is definitely those guys. I’m just glad. I’m glad for their families and glad that we were able to have the ceremony today.” In addition to the legacy of the field dedication, Palmore and Gregg have an athletic legacy on the field for Blessed Sacrament Huguenot this season. Baseball players Trey Gregg, Brandon Palmore and Coleman Smith and soccer player Emily Smith, are all donning the blue and silver just as their grandparents did. Appropriately, all four had stellar performances on the day of dedication for their families. Gregg scored three runs for the Knights. “It’s a big honor,” he

We had to make an adjustment to move our numbers forward,” Lovern explained. “If we don’t make an adjustment we’re playing five or six on eight. So that was an adjustment to create more offense, and to push some people wider to open things up.” BSH opened the scoring in the 25th minute, when a curling ball in to senior Reed Hildebrand, who coolly turned and slotted the ball into the bottom corner. The Knights eventually doubled their advantage with another Hildebrand strike in the 33rd minute. BSH would carry the 2-0 lead into

said. “My dad went here and it’s nice to have my grandfather’s name up there. It means a lot to me and I know it would mean a lot to him if he were here. It feels good to play on this field for my last year here.” Palmore beat out a bunt single and scored a run. “It’s special,” he said. “I just know he’d be glad that his name is up there.” Coleman Smith, a grandson of Palmore, had an RBI double and scored a run against Amelia Academy. “It’s really special,” he said. “It’s nice to know that his name will always be up on that scoreboard and it was great to go out and play for him today. It’s special to have people related to you to support you, to have people related to you that are on the same team and lifelong friends come out that you know will always be there.” Emily Smith, Coleman’s sister, was playing defense on the pitch and was part of a shutout for the Knights against Kenston Forest. “I feel proud about it because I get to go to a school where his name is here,” she said. “I think it’s pretty cool. I’m the youngest one here from my family, with my cousin and my brother, who’s a senior this year, so I think we’re all proud to be carrying it on.” And, both the baseball and soccer teams honored Palmore and Gregg in the greatest way possible—a win on the field of play. halftime. The second half opened with an attacking flurry from Kenston Forest, causing a few nervy moments for the Blessed Sacrament defense. However, the Knights quickly resumed their aggressive offense from the first half with their ability to counter-attack quickly. “Kenston didn’t have many opportunities to get forward,” Lovern said. “When they do, the quicker we can push the ball into their defense third, the more likely we are to have a numbers advantage that just isn’t there during the rest of the game. We just try to take advantage of them being out of position.” BSH added to their lead in the 51st minute with an excellent goal from Hil-

debrand. Operating from a deeper position in midfield in the second half, the senior picked up the ball from about 20 yards from goal and fired a sizzling left-footed strike into the back of net to make it 3-0. Senior Brian Lee got on the scoresheet in the 56th minute to bring the Knights’ lead to 4-0, and the rout was well and truly on. A chaotic sequence occurred in the 67th minute when the Kavaliers’ goalkeeper careened into the legs of a BSH attacker inside the penalty area. Hildebrand slotted the ball into the net almost simultaneously with the foul for a goal that would stand, and the referee showed Kenston’s keeper a yellow

card. Hildebrand would tack on another goal in the 70th minute, bringing his total for the game to five and sealing the 6-0 margin of victory for Blessed Sacrament. “It’s hard to play Kenston because they have a very specific game plan. They make us work to score, so it’s not as open of a game as it is when we play some of the other teams in our conference,” Lovern said. “We struggled to adjust to their game plan during the first half. In the second half we started to do things a little bit better.” Blessed Sacrament will look to continue their winning ways when they return to action on April 24th, when they host Brunswick Academy.

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Coleman Smith has been a consistent player both in the field and on the mound this year for the Knights.

Smith boosting BSH in closing role this season By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

B

lessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Coleman Smith has taken on a new role for the Knights this season. Smith has become a closer. He picked up a big save against Collegiate on March 29 in the seventh inning to secure the 7-4 win over the Cougars. Smith also closed out the come-frombehind win on April 5 against Kenston Forest. “I feel pretty good,” Smith said after that win. “It’s the third game that I’ve come in. I just try to come in and shut them down as best that I can.” Smith has played on the varsity team for the Knights ever since he was an eight grader. In his Blessed Sacrament Huguenot career, he’s a .345 hitter and has scored 40 runs. He’s got six doubles, one triple, one home run and three stolen bases. On the mound, he’s pitched 71 innings and recorded 46 strikeouts, earned five wins and just two saves. Smith has already surpassed that saves total in this season. “I just try to do the best that I can in that position,” Smith said about his closer role. “If (Coach Poore) asks me to play a position, I’m going to play it the best that I can.” Smith also brings a new perspective to

KNIGHTS Continued from pg. 1

Amelia Academy got a two-out double in the bottom of the fourth, which turned out to be the last time in the game where the Patriots would get a runner aboard. Then, the flood gates opened for Blessed Sacrament Huguenot. Eight batters in a row for the Knights stepped up to the plate and not only reached safely but would

the closing role, as he is a lefty pitcher. “I think it’s a different look,” he said. “I don’t think a lot of players are used to seeing lefty pitchers. (My) curveball comes in differently, (my) fastball comes in differently. It’s harder for them to hit.” Smith has also been making his presence known at the plate as well this year. Against Amelia Academy on April 12, Smith had an RBI double that knocked in Carter Davis to score a run in the bottom of the third inning. He also worked two walks in the 12-run fourth inning and scored a run after Noa Hasty’s double. On April 5 against Kenston Forest, he scored a run that was part of the early comeback against the Kavaliers after Davis doubled. Later In the game, he reached base with a single to load the bases. James Heldmann worked a walk after Smith singled to bring in another run. Smith then scored after a misplay on a ball that Davis put into play. This year’s Knights team has shown a never-say-die mentality thus far and Smith thinks this group of players is a good one. “We’ve got more will to win,” he said. “Now, we just need to figure out how to best use our talent and get more wins.” Smith is continuing a legacy of playing baseball at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot.. “It’s special,” he said of continuing the tradition. “When you come out here, you have to live up to the name. It means a lot.”

score runs as well. Kurtz, Davis and Noa Hasty each would knock in runs, two in Hasty’s case as did Tyler Hall on a sacrifice fly. After all was said and done, the Knights batted around and hung up a 12 on the scoreboard. Amelia Academy came and went quickly in the top of the fifth and the game ended due to the slaughter rule. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot is at the half-

way mark of their season right as their weeklong break arrives. The Knights are 6-5 and that’s about where Poore said he thought they would be. “Maybe we could have won a couple more games here or there, but we also could have lost a game or two too,” he said. “We’ve just got to get better. I think once the defense comes along…the key is the defense. It’s all about playing defense.”

Powhatan native Benny Pugh (center) has had a wave of success in net for the University of Richmond men’s lacrosse team. This season, he’s 9-2 and is 10th overall in the NCAA with 12.09 saves per game.

P

owhatan native Benny Pugh said that when he first started playing lacrosse, he tried out many different positions. From the attacking midfielder to attack to defender, Pugh tried them all. But, he found his true home in between the pipes

as a goalie. “I started playing goalie around fifth or sixth grade,” he said. “I had done everything else, so I figured I’d give (goalie) a shot. It’s not that I wasn’t having fun doing other things, but at that point in time we probably needed a goalie and I was not afraid of the ball. I didn’t feel like I had any skill set at that point that would make me good at it.

I was just so young and I was like ‘yea, I’ll give it a try.’ That’s how a lot of guys fall into the position. You just jump on in and try it.” The move to goalie were both fortuitous as he has climbed the ranks in lacrosse as a goalie and is the starting goalie for the University of Richmond men’s lacrosse team. While Pugh is from Powhatan, he attended

he played the entire game, allowed no goals through the first 42 minutes against Virginia Military Institute and allowed one goal against Furman through the 57 of 60 minutes. Pugh has started all 11 games in 2017 and has recorded 136 saves at a .687 save percentage, allowing 62 goals for a goalsagainst average of 5.8. The only two losses this season came to two Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouses on the lacrosse field in Duke and Virginia. But, both games were decided by just one goal. “We’re happy with where we’re at,” he said. “It’s nice to know that we can compete to those teams that we lost those one-goal games to. Overall, it’s been a good year and we’re having a lot of fun, that’s for sure.” While the Richmond lacrosse team is a young program, the players on the field are all veterans, which makes the choreog-

Woodberry Forest for his high school. At Woodberry, he was a four-time state champion and a three-year starter for the Tigers lacrosse team. He also played football and basketball and ran track. Pugh played 15 games in goal and started 14 of them his freshman year in 2014. He was second in goals-against and third in save percentage in the Atlantic Sun that season. In the entire NCAA, he was ranked 25th in goalsagainst and 29th in save percentage. That season was the first-ever for the Spiders lacrosse team and Pugh was in goal for each of the six wins for the program that year. The next season, he led the Southern Conference and was second in the NCAA in both goalsagainst average and save percentage. He allowed seven goals or fewer five times when

raphy of the defense a much easier task, according to Pugh. “We’ve been playing together so long that a lot of the stuff happens without saying,” he said. “In terms of the position in general, communication is something you need to be good at and get your point across in a small sentence and be succinct. My defense makes it pretty easy on me and lets me focus on my job of saving the ball.” While Powhatan High School did not have a lacrosse team when Pugh was in the county, he’s been happy to see the explosion of popularity of the game in the area. “It’s been pretty cool to see,” he said. “Powhatan has a done a lot with the sport. It’s been cool to drive down the road and see Powhatan Lacrosse registration dates on signs. I’m definitely interested in helping out with programs like that over the summer.”

From the editor:

Baseball and family go hand-in-hand Sports Editor

I always feel right at home whenever I’m covering a sport at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot or Powhatan High School. I’m there often enough that both have become basically a second home. But, I especially felt at home on April 12 at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot because it was a celebration of two things that are right in line with my own history: family and baseball. At the baseball field dedication ceremony for Ellis Palmore and Jim Gregg, quite a crowd gathered prior to the game and stayed throughout the fiveinning win for the Knights. Many of those that came together for the game were friends and family members of the Greggs and Palmores, with stories being swapped, memories shared and watching the Knights take to the field. Younger members of the families and the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot community as a whole were going around selling beverages and passing out Cracker Jacks and peanuts, the latter of which had a commemorative photo of the scoreboard on it. Dave, one of Palmore’s sons, said peanuts were his dad’s favorite and he had them at every baseball game. Let’s not forget that

family also was on the field for both the Palmores and Greggs, as Trey Gregg, Brandon Palmore and Palmore cousin Coleman Smith were on the baseball field, carrying on their respective family names. It brought back a host of memories for me as I stood there, taking notes throughout the game and chatting with various members of the two families that were around. I started reminiscing about some of my first Little League games at Forestville Little League in Bristol, Connecticut. My grandfather came to every game that my brother or I played when we lived in Connecticut and kept our batting averages and specific details of how each at-bat went. He kept it in his wallet at all times, but he didn’t really need to as he had memorized our averages and could probably still recall them today if one of us asked him. I remember one time in particular when I was rounding third and heading home to score when I was about 7 and I caught a glimpse of him, right by the fence, cheering me on as I went home. The expression of excitement and joy on his face as he watched one of his grandsons play is something I will never forget. Of course my parents were a fixture at the ball fields, both in Connecticut

and when we relocated to Virginia. My mom was the ultimate team mom, always taking care of snacks for our teams and more often than not was up in the press box, keeping score with one hand and taping each time my brother or I came to the plate with the other, often giving some kind of commentary that we wouldn’t hear until the film session later in the week. When my wife and I took our engagement photos, baseball was centerstage, as I donned my Yankees has and we wrote the date of our wedding on baseballs that we held up to the camera. My dad was a coach for my brother and me whenever he had the chance, despite his annual “I’m not going to coach this year speech. He always treated us equally as any other kid on the field, but had a unique exuberance when one of us did something particularly spectacular or meaningful for the team. Often, he’ll bring up some of those memories with me now, and loves filling my wife in on some of those memories as well. He loved coaching so much that after my brother was the last one to age out of Little League, some of the members of that last team he coached with my brother asked him to coach them again the next year. He hap-

pily accepted. He’s been coaching with my uncle (his brother) and my cousin in the Glen Allen Babe Ruth League and I’ve gotten to help out in my spare time. My uncle and my dad came up to me, separately, at one practice and told me how good a coach I’ll be one day for my kids when I carry on that tradition. That means a lot when you’re in a baseball family. And, that’s a lot of what baseball is. It’s about family, coming together and enjoying the time at the diamond. In our increasingly fastpaced world, with our noses glued to our phone screens and with sometimes too much attention paid to what goes on online, perhaps we all should appreciate those times at the ball field like was had at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot at the dedication. I know that I sure will. Billy Fellin can be reached at wfellin@powhatantoday.com.
