POWHATAN – The Powhatan County School Board had one of its first early public discussions last week about potentially redistricting its elementary schools along with the opening of a new middle school in fall 2018. During its workshop on Tuesday, May 9, the school board heard a presentation from K&C Associated about the enrollment and capacity at the county’s three elementary schools and how the school board should proceed with discussions about redistricting. The issue has centered around moving some students out of Powhatan and Flat Rock Elementary schools over to Pocahontas Elementary School for the 2018-2019 school year. Jones said he knows mentioning the word redistricting causes a certain amount of angst among some parents, but he is hoping most will not see it as a big issue. “We are not talking about a lot of students. We are talking 100 students would be moving. We might be able to balance it out from each of the schools to Pocahontas,” he said. see SCHOOL, pg. 6

New middle school gets its name By Laura McFarland News Editor
POWHATAN – Although it isn’t nearly finished yet, the building that will serve sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders beginning in the 2018-2019 school year now has a name, and it should be pretty easy to remember – Powhatan Middle School. The three members of the Powhatan County School Board who were present for its meeting on Tuesday, May 9 voted unanimously to choose the name of the school that is replacing the former Powhatan Junior High School. Rick Cole, who represents District 1; James Kunka, District 2, and Kim Hymel, District 5, all voted in favor of Powhatan Middle School as the new name. Valarie Ayers, District 3, and Joe Walters, District 4, were absent. Dr. Eric Jones, superintendent, said that an inclusive process was used for selecting the name for the new school. The process was started in February with students at Pocahontas Middle School, and the Student Council Association (SCA) in particular, suggesting names for the new middle school. All students had the chance to participate, and the SCA was responsible for selecting the
best eight to 10 names for the community to consider. Those top names were posted on the school website for community input and additional names were allowed to be submitted by parents and/or community members, Jones said. There were 230 suggestions generated from the public. Of those 230 names, 115 were Powhatan Middle School, Jones said. The next highest number of votes was 20. “There appears to be strong community consensus for naming the school Powhatan Middle School. Thus, we recommend that the school board at this time name the new school that will open in September 2018 Powhatan Middle School, he said. Cole said he appreciated the input that the school district sought and received on this matter. “I know that people have different ideas on what the school should be named, but I hope that everyone can rally around this one, because it seems like it’s the name that most people prefer, Cole said. “And it is highly original, Kunka joked before the board voted. People pour into Hops & Barley By Laura McFarland News Editor
P
OWHATAN – An inch and a half of rain the night before didn’t dampen the turnout this weekend for the Rotary Club of Powhatan’s seventh annual Virginia Hops and Barley Festival. About 2,000 people attended the festival on Saturday, May 3 at its new location at Westchester Commons shopping center, a move organizers said saved the event this year. The ground was somewhat muddy, and there was standing water in places, but it was still easy to move around within the festival area, said Steve Jenkins, executive secretary of the Rotary Club. Previously held in an open field in the northeastern end of the county, muddy conditions caused by an 1 ½ inches of rain the night before almost assuredly would have meant the event had to be canceled for fear of the ground being impassible for vehicles, he said. “If we could find a location in Powhatan that could handle this amount of people, that had the parking, and that we could do all of this, we would have kept it there. But this opportunity came up. We fought that mud for six years and it was becoming a deterrent,” he said. The new location also had the benefit of increased visibility, with drivers coming to the shopping center spotting it and stopping to see what was going on, Jenkins said. Within the first hour of the festival, he said he could already see more people than by the same time the year before. “We do believe with this location, within the next year or two, the festival is going to explode,” he said. Tom and Emily English near Westchester Commons and said they saw the festival signs leading up to it and decided to check it out. The outing was also a gift from Emily to her hus-
band, who turned 34 on Saturday, he said. It was a perfect gift, he added. “It’s the perfect trifecta – beer, music and food,” he said with a laugh. Lee Stott also celebrated his birthday at the festival, although that wasn’t originally his plan. The Bon Air man and regular Hops and Barley attendee was surprised when he showed up and found his daughters, Jessie and Whitney Stott, had thrown him a surprise 60th birthday party in the middle of the festival. Lee Stott, who turned 60 on May 10, showed off the VIP wristband his daughters bought for him and said the surprise was “marvelous.” Aside from the location, the other big change this year was returning to having the cost of admission only cover five tastings, with additional samples available for purchase, said Ashwin Sharma, event coordinator. Since Hops and Barley is the local Rotary club’s largest annual fundraiser and the money is used to do so much good in the community, members were hoping it wouldn’t be a deterrent to attendance. “We have lost money on beer before because we pay for each keg. To keep that down and make sure we have money to give back to these good causes we decided to make this change,” he said, adding having limited tastings was actually a return to how the festival was when it started. Sharma said on Monday, May 15 that 2017’s attendance, with about 2,000 people, was a significant increase over 1,500 people in 2016. Melissa Winters, who attended the festival for her sixth year, said when she looked into this year’s festival and heard it had done away with unlimited samples, she and her boyfriend hesitated about coming again. However, once they were out there and saw the festival’s new small tasting glasses, which were filled up by the 15 breweries who offered tast-

OWHATAN – The question of possibly outsourcing Powhatan County Public School’s food services has been put off a little longer with personnel in that department assured they will have jobs in the 20172018 school year. Dr. Eric Jones, superintendent, informed the workers earlier this month that the school district had only recently received the approval from the Virginia Department of Education on its request for proposal (RFP) regarding companies that might come in and take over providing
food services for all five schools. The RFP asks for companies to propose how they would take over the food operations for the schools, the cost and what changes would need to be made. The department of education (DOE) had to review the RFP because there are federal and state guidelines for school nutrition, Jones said. After receiving approval from the DOE, there wasn’t enough time before the end of the school year to issue the RFP, do interviews and then enter contract negotiations, he said. “We felt like it was unfair to our own staff for them not to know their status before the end of the year. We had some concerns about whether companies would be receptive to the RFP if they didn’t have a lot of time to plan and to implement something to start in September, he said. He said the issue will be put on hold until the fall and the earliest it will affect school employees will be the 2018-2019 school year. In regard to food services, during the Powhatan County School Board’s meeting on Tuesday, May 9, the three school board members present voted unanimously to approve new school lunch and breakfast prices. Rick Cole, who represents District 1; James Kunka, District 2, and Kim Hymel, District 5, all voted in favor of the new prices. Valarie Ayers, District 3, and Joe Walters, District 4, were absent. The school board approved: the breakfast price for kindergarten through eighth grade increase
from $1.35 to $1.50 (food services does not serve breakfast for grades nine to 12) and the lunch price increase from $2.50 to $2.65. At Powhatan High School lunch prices will increase from $2.60 to $2.75. Although the issue of food services personnel was not addressed by the school board in its agenda on May 9, Mary Smith of Powhatan spoke during the public comment period, thanking Jones for letting the employees know before the end of the school year that they still had a job for the new school year and the school board for supporting his decision. Smith had previously spoken to the board on Feb. 15 on behalf of her fellow food services co-workers asking the board members not to outsource their jobs. Smith said there are 27 employees, 16 of whom have 10 plus years of service and eight of whom have 20 or more years. “To me, that is outstanding in this day and time to have the loyalty and dedication of employees staying on a job that long, she said at the February meeting. With salaries around $10,000 to $12,000 a year, Smith said it was not the money but the love of children that made the food services employees stick around so long. “We are all mothers, so we not only have our own biological children but we also have all the students that we serve in our schools and we treat them as our own, she said. She said that children have a hard time trying to learn when their stomachs are growling for food and
that the school employees never let a child go hungry for lack of food. If the school district were to outsource food services, she worried whether employees would have that kind of flexibility to put the students’ interests first. The food services fund is meant to be self sustaining but is not, and most recently the school board’s fiscal year (FY) 2018 budget included a $250,000 transfer from the operating fund to the food services fund. During the school board’s meeting on Jan. 24, members heard a presentation from Larry Johns, assistant superintendent for finance and business operations, on food services. The presentation outlined that total food service revenues and expenditures have been dropping, along with student enrollment, in the last few years and pointed out that the food service fund has needed support from the general fund for 15 years or more. In three out of the last four years, expenditures exceeded revenues in the food services fund, according to Johns. In FY 2016, revenues exceeded expenditures by $16,484. Johns’ full presentation includes comparison of cost break downs, the breakdown of school lunches at each school by numbers, meals served as a percentage of the enrollment, and the average revenue versus expenditure per meal. The full presentation can be found on the school district’s Board Docs page, www.boarddocs. com/vsba/powhatan/ Board.nsf/Public# under the Jan. 24 meeting.

Organizers also pride themselves on making the fair an affordable outing, she added. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children age 3 and under. Active military with ID and Special Olympics athletes will also be admitted free. Discounted unlimited wristband tickets are available in advance for purchase through Thursday, May 18 online at www. powhatanfair.org. Parking is free. “With a lot of other fairs we have been to, a lot of the things they offer, you have to pay extra to get in. We make it where most of the things, except the rides, it is free to enjoy them,” Jackson said. An exception to this is one of the new additions to this year’s entertainment, two paint and sip parties led by Wine and Design, which will have participants enjoying wine while they create a painting, Jackson said. The events, which will be held at 6 p. m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday, are $40 each. Online registration is required at www.wineanddesign.com, and an online discount is offered for the first 10 people to sign up
for each class. Adding the paint and sip parties was meant to appeal to moms wanting a break while their children have some fun and women wanting to have a good time with their friends, Jackson said. Another new attraction is a game show being held each day that is designed so the real winners are local charities who will receive the prize money, Jackson said. A play area will be set up where fairgoers can play Knocker ball, a sport that involves encasing yourself in a large ball of air allowing you to knock in to others, roll, flip, fall and bounce while playing soccer. “You are playing soccer but you are bouncing around. It’s hilarious,” FILE PHOTOS BY LAURA MCFARLAND Jackson said. On Friday, a Hispanicinspired recipe contest will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Cook up your Hispanic-inspired recipe that uses a minimum of four eggs or half an egg per serving and bring it and the written recipe to the fair. Cash prizes available. The fair opens on Saturday with a musical performance by Michael DeHart of Powhatan. Other entertainers throughout the day will include belly dancers and magicians. The Dealers will perform at 7 p.m. At 10 p.m., Dance Party After Dark starts with DJ Sir RJ spinning tunes for people who still have some energy and want to dance. While the rides don’t begin on May 21 until 1 p. m., there will be free admission before noon so people can attend an 11 a.m. Community Non-Denominational Worship Service with Pastor Stanley Ward, of St James Baptist Church.
On Sunday, the fair will also hold Cruz-in for a Cause, a car and bike show, as well as musical performances by several gospel groups, a comedian, and a jazz and blues band. Participants in the car show as well as members of the public are also asked to bring non-perishable food donations to benefit Backpacks of Love and Central VA Food Bank. Other returning favorites include the petting zoo, kid zone, camel rides, Virginia extension office Master Gardeners, and Blacksmith Exposition. Even if people aren’t interested in riding rides, the fair offers enough shows, games, attractions and the allure of tasty carnival treats to snack on to make the county fair worth the price of admission, Jackson said. under discussion for awhile, especially in relation to the new middle school opening for the 2018-2019 school year, he said. Since part of the sixth grade is housed at Pocahontas Elementary, when the sixth-graders are moved to the new middle school, that will leave available classroom space, he said. Meanwhile, moving the fifth grade down to the three elementary schools had created an issue of space at Flat Rock and Powhatan Elementary schools, Jones said. There will be issues to work through, Jones said, but he added he hopes people will understand that this is the best use of the school district’s facilities to help avoid the cost of building a new school to accommodate students as long as possible. “So the longer that we can keep three elementary schools functioning and under capacity we have an obligation to do that, he said. Looking at enrollment Dr. Carl Chafin and Susan Kooch, both managing partners with K&C Associated, gave a presentation to the school board about how to proceed with redistricting and get community involvement to make the process as smooth as possible. Currently Flat Rock and Powhatan Elementary schools are both at 92 percent capacity, Chafin said. Flat Rock’s enrollment as of March 6 was 696 students in a school with a capacity for 760 students, while Powhatan Elementary has 528 students and a capacity of 575 students. In comparison, Pocahontas Elementary can hold 850 students but only had 579 elementary age students enrolled as of March 6. That puts it at 68 percent of capacity if you only count the students through the fifth grade. It does not include the sixthgraders currently using classes there. “In essence, we are going to have to shift some students to Pocahontas Elementary to create more space in both Flat Rock and Powhatan so that we don’t get into a situation where if enrollment

growth continues, as is forecast in the coming years, we are placing trailers and other mobile units at two elementary schools while we still have capacity and classroom space available, Jones said. One of the goals examined in K&C’s study was to look at how to align enrollments at each elementary school more closely with capacity while keeping in mind future growth potential, Chafin agreed. A longterm goal that results from that is to extend the timeframe before a new elementary school is needed. As part of the study, K&C has geocoded the student database to create maps that show where students are located throughout the county, Chafin said. The maps will help evaluate different redistricting options that may be considered. Kooch provided sample maps to the board that show the three elementary school districts and how many students are in them. The mapping system K&C uses will allow people looking at the issue to see different breakdowns of the information while they are making their decisions, she said. “It is a great product for looking at where your students are and how to best utilize spatially that information to make educated decisions as you move forward, she said.
Going forward Kooch recommended that the school board es-

tablish a committee made up of community members and school personnel to look at the redistricting issue. “I don’t know your county; this is not my county. I can look at your data and I can make my own recommendations, but it is very crucial for y’all to be a part of it and to add your knowledge base as residents... That is very crucial, she said. Redistricting committee members will be chosen this summer and in the fall to look at the redistricting issue and the possible solutions K&C brings forward. Then the best options will be presented to the school board in December, Jones said. “That is our target to give families that are moving schools enough notice to be prepared for that move. We would like to do it before the new year starts. We still will have to update bus routes, transportation and all of that stuff as well as moving 1,000 kids over to the new middle school, Jones said. “So, the earlier we can get this process done I think the better for everyone in terms of noticing and also planning. Rick Cole, who represents District 1, asked if the study looked at how many children are in the county who are not yet school age to better judge school projected enrollments. The primary way to anticipate that is by going to the Virginia Department of Health to get the county’s live birth rate, a process K&C does on an ongoing basis, Chafin said. “It’s important to know what’s coming, he said. Jones said the projections were also updated while keeping in mind potential new developments that might bring students into the schools. They will also look at growth trends at each of the schools in recent years and take that into consideration. The committee and school board will also look at the exceptions that may be made in allowing students to attend a school out of their zone and decide which ones they will still allow, Jones said. Some examples include students who attend school in the zone where they attend before and after school care or who have a parent that works at one of the schools. FROM THE NEWS EDITOR
Thanks to teachers past, present, and future By Laura McFarland News Editor
L
ast week, this writer noticed a sign talking about Teacher Appreciation Week, which was May 8-12, and put a post on Facebook encouraging readers to show our Powhatan County teachers some love. It was sincerely meant, not a gimmick to get online play, because I truly believe in the importance of teachers and the impact they can have on a person’s life. Through the K-12 and college years, I learned a great deal from a number of fantastic teachers and professors. It helped that, as a teacher’s pet, I usually got along pretty well with all of them. Looking back, the teachers who taught me growing up came in all kinds, good and bad – passionate, burned out, seasoned, fresh out of school, super friendly, matter of fact, open minded, stubborn … the list goes on and on. But thinking back now about the teachers that still stand out the most, it wasn’t necessarily the nicest or even the meanest educators who
made a lasting impression. Instead, it was the ones who challenged their students, including me, to do more, be more, think more. I remember an English teacher who had us reading books that tore away the data-driven, sometimes sanitized, version of history we thought we knew. There was a French teacher who approached the language and culture in ways that made it invigorating to learn. There was another English teacher who demonstrated great kindness to the introverted teenager I once was but also challenged me to look outside myself. There was the journalism professor who I really wasn’t fond of but who helped me gain a better understanding of the need to be responsible and fact-based even with opinion writing. And, finally, there was the most important one of all, my high school journalism teacher, Mrs. Margot Comstock, who will always and forever be Mrs. Comstock to me. Now, granted having been in her classroom for a solid four years, she had the most opportunity to make
an impression. But she also introduced me to the path that would one day become my chosen profession. She was and still is a great combination of kind, sarcastic, no-nonsense, silly, exasperated, protective, thought-provoking and encouraging. She took a teenager who liked writing short stories but not talking to people and helped mold me into a responsible high school reporter who was ready for the next steps – college and internships followed by actually working in the field. And in the process, she made me not only a better journalist but a better human being. Let’s face it, when we do it right, life is one big classroom. That old adage that you never stop learning is true if you want it to be. There will be plenty of people along the way who teach you lessons, both good and bad. But to the educators who have made it their passion and life’s work to help shape, nurture and challenge our youth in the early stages of their path to self-discovery, you have my utmost gratitude and respect. ANOTHER VIEW
When ‘Doo-Dah’ was real By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
It’s always a sure sign of spring when the best thoroughbreds in the nation line up at Churchill Downs for the spectacle known as the Kentucky Derby. The current edition of an established Southern tradition has more of a semblance to the Golden Globes than the atmosphere most of us would associate with horse racing, but it remains a rite of spring most of us can’t ignore. The week-long celebration attracts celebrities from across the globe, and the old-fashioned attraction of the workingman’s race is as long gone as moonlight and magnolias. It’s become a well scripted, overly covered Las Vegas type complete with red carpet appearances and the onthe-spot fashion commentary. It’s an evolution that is mildly acceptable to me, and probably aptly represents the entertainment state of our country. Things change. I get it. I usually try to tune in as close to the actual running of the Derby as possible, purposely missing the pre-game hype and endless collection of decorative, term used kindly, hats. I’ve never bet on a horse race, even on the few occasions I was actually at a racetrack, occurrences I can easily count on one hand. The highlight of those few visits was a trip to the 100th running of the Preakness in Baltimore. Crammed in among masses in the infield, race after race progressed and I never saw the first horse. However, many locals recall a race that did capture the attention of everyone I knew back in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Like Derby Week, the days leading up to Camptown Races was an endless stream of parties and cookouts, all simmering to the boil of race day, and a leisurely afternoon stretched out on a hill north of Ashland watching local horses compete on a grass track. Camptown was the event of the year for the younger generation, but it at-
tracted fans from all generations, many of them quick to tell how many consecutive races they had attended. And what had begun as a genteel gathering of local horse gentry to compete and carouse, by the 1970s had become our local version of Woodstock. Buses, trucks and cars began arriving early on the second Saturday in May, and Manheim Farms rolling hills quickly filled with cars. Many carried coolers filled with fried chicken, potato salad and other goodies, while the stronger ones toted containers filled with iced down beer. No doubt, rules were being ignored on that one Saturday. I suppose that was part of the attraction, and the rule of the day was don’t be too outrageous and things will probably end well. It never rained on Camptown Race Day, and the sun always shined on the hill that quickly filled adjacent to the track. By the first call to post, not a green spot remained in the patchwork of blankets that, from a distance, resembled a huge quilt. The facilities were not fancy, and a lone cinderblock wall on the side of a hill separated the men and women’s “restrooms”. Privacy was not an option and I often wondered if that portion of the hill was visible to anyone. Proceeds from the event benefited an Ashland group raising money to construct a World War II Memorial, and local deputies were quick to arrest the over-zealous partiers who, when exciting the event, jumped out of cars to relieve themselves in the woods. Hanover Judge Landram scheduled a special Camptown Day to hand out fines of $100 to the offenders, many making their first and only appearance before a judge. To the old-timers, the influx of longhaired college students threatened the country-flavored dignity of the annual event. Some race officials, owners and locals feared the infusion would ruin an event that had become Ashland’s signature since it began in 1953. I had not attended for some years see REAL, pg. 8

The Comprehensive Plan – Why Care? By Karin Carmack Special to the Powhatan Today
R
ight now the Powhatan County Planning Commission is wrapping up a yearlong update and review of the 2010 comprehensive plan. Why is this important? First, let’s explore what exactly the comprehensive plan is and who writes it? It is a plan that guides public policy in terms of land use decisions, transportation, utilities, recreation, and housing. The plan helps direct growth and determine rezonings, as well as helping to create the look and vision for the county. It is the nuts and bolts behind the zoning and subdivision ordinances. By state code, the planning commission is tasked with the job of writing and updating the comprehensive plan. The planning commission is composed of five appointed citizens by each board of supervisor (BOS) representing each district. We make recommendations to the BOS on rezonings, conditional use permits, the capital improvement plan (CIP) and, finally, the comprehensive plan. We were created to help take the politics out of planning and to make fair and balanced (really fair and balanced) recommendations to the board of supervisors. However, the comprehensive plan is truly a plan of the people and in Powhatan County this really is the case. In order to illustrate this, you will need a little history on the current plan. Back in 2010, Powhatan had a MAJOR overhaul and re-write of the plan that literally took several years. This included hiring a consultant and formulating citizen working groups who helped give input into transportation, utilities, land use, and economic development. Following this, a series of three public meetings were held and the required formal public hearings, which led to our current 2010 comprehensive plan. Right now, we are in the process of updating and revising the current plan as is required every five years (yeah we’re a little late). Currently, we are getting ready to hold the public comment sessions, which is the opportunity for each citizen to participate in the planning process. Where will you be able to find this proposed 2017 updated Rosetta Stone to the county? It will be on the county web
site, www.powhatanva.gov. Type in “comprehensive plan” on the search bar and it will come up. Now you may be thinking you do not have time to scroll through and read all 120 pages. I’ll help and give you the highlights. It’s all important, but, in my humble opinion, I would focus on Chapters 6 (Infrastructure), which talks about water and sewer, broadband, schools, etc. This should appeal to anyone with kids and people who want broadband and to know if they have the potential to be on public water. Chapter 8 (Land Use and Community Character) dictates where your commercial growth centers will go, development densities, including maximum and minimum lot sizes for subdivisions and where higher density development such as apartments and townhomes could be approved. Finally, Chapter 9 (Transportation) is important because it’s always good to know if a proposed road could be running through your backyard. What’s next? At this point, the planning commission is going to have one or two additional workshops and then hold several public meetings to get citizen input on the updated plan. The dates for these meetings have not been set yet, however, they will be advertised via the Powhatan Today, posted on the county web site, and shared via Facebook. After the public meetings, if needed the planning commission will tweak the plan again and then have the formal public hearing. It will then move onto to the board of supervisors for final review. The board will have their public hearing where they can choose to follow the planning commission’s recommendations, change the plan somewhat or change it altogether. Yes, the planning commission is tasked with writing it, but the board of supervisors does have the final say. Now is the time to get engaged and let your elected and appointed officials know how YOU want Powhatan to develop. You do have a say and the planning commission welcomes your input. Be on the lookout for the dates of the public comment sessions and please join us. Hope to see you soon. Karin Carmack is the chairman of the Powhatan County Planning Commission.

“I think that it demonstrates the commitment of not just our school division but our county administration, our local business owners and community members to literacy and the children of Powhatan County. I don’t know of
anywhere else that has a program quite like this, where so many people come together to support literacy in the summer, Ingle said. NACo’s Achievement Awards Program is a noncompetitive awards program that seeks to recognize innovative county

when they ran the last Camptown Race on the track north of Ashland in 1977. By then, many of the original organizers were no longer around to oversee the event, and, like many country races in Central Virginia, it just faded away. For most of us, Camptown ended with our col-
lege days; and the day the event ran its last race at Manheim in 1977. For years, the owners had offered the land for the event free of charge, but evolving liability issues forced them to no longer host the event. There was something about Camptown that would not, or could not, and probably should not change with the times. Its innocent approach to host-
ing one of the most popular events in Virginia also was the thing that attracted its devoted fans, and what eventually spelled its demise. A subtle mental signal reminds me each second Saturday in May of those days at Camptown, and my mind wanders to a place sitting on that picture perfect hill and enjoying the sweet Virginia breeze of spring.

owhatan football coach and director of student activities Jim Woodson said that he’s been “blessed and humbled” to have been involved in athletics as long as he has been. But, after 18 years as the director of student activities, Woodson will be retir-
ing from that role. “They’ve always said, when it’s time, you know it’s time,” he said. “After 38 years and then 18 years as athletic director, it’s gotten to that point. It’s a difficult decision for me, but I’ve been privileged to have had this opportunity to work with the students of Powhatan County. It’s a blessing. It’s a great job when you can help other people and make a positive experience for them to be a better person.”
Woodson will remain on as head coach of the Indians football team, which he said was an integral factor of his retirement. “That was an important part,” he said. “After 38 years of doing something and stopping cold turkey, I probably would have been a wreck. It’s never really been a job to me. It’s always been my passion. I enjoy coming in, I enjoy helping the kids and enjoy competing.” Woodson is a Virginia High School
League Hall of Famer and has been at the head of the Indians football program since 1985. He’s been to the state championship game four times and won two of them. Woodson is 273-95-1 as a head coach for the Indians. The online VHSL record book has Woodson sixth all-time among active coaches in Virginia for wins. During his time as athletic director, his role has also expanded as the school’s ofsee WOODSON, pg. 3B

The offense came alive and posted seven unanswered runs in a 7-3 win over Albemarle on May 10. “We spotted them three and didn’t panic,” coach Gregg Conner said. “We just kept chipping away and chipping away. It was
a good team win.” The Indians started chipping away immediately at the Patriots’ lead. Nick Rinni knocked Jacob Oglesby in for the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Tucker Dunaway worked a walk to load the bases and Hunter Hopkins scored Ross Lewis on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2. After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second defensively, Powhatan kept the pressure on in its half of the second. Brandon Eike worked a walk and was followed by Adam Seal reaching base

Llewellyn named director of student activities By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
A
t the Powhatan School Board Meeting on May 9, Powhatan Superintendant Eric Jones announced that Tim Llewellyn would come on as the new director of student activities at Powhatan. Llewellyn will replace Jim Woodson, who is retiring from the role. Llewellyn and his family have lived in Powhatan for over 20 years and he brings experience from being assistant athletic di-
rector at Clover Hill High School and director of student activities at James River High School. “I’m really excited to get started,” he said. “I’ve never worked at a school where I lived in the same county, so that’ll be a first for me. But, I’m really excited.” Llewellyn’s son, Andrew, graduated from Powhatan and is currently playing baseball at Wingate University. His daughter, Lauren, is a member of the Indians girls volleyball team. He said that family is what brought him back to
the classroom and family is what brings him back to being athletic director once again. “In the spring of Andrew’s junior year of Powhatan, I wasn’t sure if the next year would be it for him in terms of athletics,” he said. “I wanted to make sure that I didn’t miss it and that’s one of the main reasons why I went back into the classroom. I was working four nights a week at James River and I was missing a lot of games. Now at Powhatan, with my daughter playing volleyball, I’ll be able to see almost all of them because
I’ll be working.” Having coaches that have been around for several decades, such as Woodson, baseball coach Gregg Conner and softball coach Marie Crump, signals a strong program, Llewellyn said. “To have coaches like that is phenomenal,” he said. “Obviously something great is going on for them to want to stay there and be so successful year after year. That’s a drawing point. I love the community and the school system has been great for both of my children.” Llewellyn said that
since he’s familiar with the program overall, he believes the transition into the role will be easier than if he was a total stranger. “I know a lot of the coaches and a lot of the teachers,” he said. “That’s going to make it a lot easier than if I was someone brand new. I’ve been to sporting events, even when my kids weren’t playing…I just like doing that. I have a feel for Powhatan athletics and the other components like band and chorus.” During his time at Clover Hill, Llewellyn worked under Ted Salmon, who is
a member of the VHSL Hall of Fame for his administrative work in athletics. “I learned a lot from (Salmon),” Llewellyn said. “It’s almost like a fraternity of athletic directors or DSAs. So, I’m not afraid that if I don’t know something, I’ll give one of those guys a call and talk it out. Ted has been very helpful and many others as well. I also know many of the AD’s in the Jefferson District after working with them doing lacrosse for James River.” Llewellyn will take over the role on July 1.
Powhatan Jr. High softball wins back-to-back titles By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
T
he Powhatan Junior High School softball team has won backto-back Southside District titles one other time before, 14 years ago. Now, make it two. The Indians took down Prince Edward 10-7 to win their second district crown in a row. Coach Karen Jackson said that it was all about the eighth graders that stayed with the team who wanted to repeat as champs. “I had seven returners in my starting lineup this year,” she said. “Two of which were my pitcher and catcher who worked all year together. That
played a big role. I had eight eighth graders decide to play down with me this year, which was humbling since I think all of them could have gone up and played JV. They had won last year and they wanted to come back and their goal was to win the whole thing again.” The returning players were a huge strength for the team this season and their strength through the adversity of their regular season loss to Prince Edward carried the team to the rematch in the championship game. The title game was a see-saw battle. Prince Edward took an early 1-0 lead and then Powhatan scored two runs. Prince Edward scored two runs of their own to
make it 3-2, but Powhatan answered with four runs to take a 6-3 lead. Prince Edward scored another to make it 6-4, followed by Powhatan adding some more runs to make it 10-6. Prince Edward added one more run before the Indians were able to shut them down for the win. Pitcher Sarah English and catcher Kayla Davis worked effectively on defense and Davis had a strong game at the plate, going 3 for 3 with three doubles. Autumn McMillen was also 3 for 3 and hit a home run. “These girls proved that when they set their minds to something, it’s attainable,” Jackson said. “When you know this is what you want and you

chose to stay down, they followed through pretty well.” A three-peat may be a difficult proposition for the softball team, as those eight eighth graders who were so pivotal for the team this season will now
be heading up to the high school next year. But, Jackson is confident in the talent that remains as well as the talent coming up. “All things are possible,” she said. “We’re going to have a younger
team next year. In Powhatan, when one set of talent leaves, another set always comes up. I do have some strong girls that were in seventh grade this year. Next year will definitely be their year to shine.”

Mullins said once that happened, he knew Allanson was on his game, but Allanson threw a complete game shutout, which surprised even Mullins. Allanson’s performance gave the offense momentum for two quick runs in the top of the first inning. Reed Allen and Chase Gayness both reached base in the first inning and knocked in the first two runs. Park View was able to load the bases in the sixth inning to try and get on the board, but Allanson’s dominant day wouldn’t be lost and he shut down the threat. “He’s a smart pitcher,” Mullins said

Albemarle put any threat of scoring runs on base. But, the Indians were able to work out of the jams effectively to keep the Patriots off the scoreboard. Dillon Hall had a strong
of Allanson. “He studies the game. His breaking ball just kept those guys swinging at balls in the dirt the whole game. They were just waving at the ball.” It is the second title for the Indians in the last three years and that consistency is something that Mullins said is entirely provided by his athletes. “I really think, overall, it’s the kids,” he said. “The program has been in place and I’ve been there for 13 years. The program has been in place for that period of time and it kind of runs itself. Over the years, working alongside Coach Conner in camps, that has helped us do things like the high school does. Overall, we don’t put that much emphasis on winning, even though we win our fair share of games, but we put more emphasis on our guys getting prepared for the next level. We’re asking you to go out, prepare during practice, get better every day as a player and go out and play your best and not really worry about what’s on the scoreboard.” Mullins said that he will be losing some eighth graders to graduation, but the team overall is a very young squad. “This is probably the youngest team we’ve had in a while,” he said. “We lose the captains Conner Woodall, Allanson and Cayden Biel to the junior varsity team next year. We always think we have a shot (at another title) and all the guys when they walk down the hill and see those signs, it gives them something to work toward.”
performance, despite being sick, Conner said. Justin Bales continued his usual role of coming in and dominating lineups late in the game. The win continues a hot streak for Powhatan, winning six of their last seven games.
“The energy level has really improved,” Conner said. “They’re finally relaxing and letting their ability show through and that’s what it’s about.” The Indians hosted Clover Hill on May 15 and then traveled to Charlottesville on May 16.

Roundup: Knights baseball heads to states By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
While the Virginia Colonial Conference tournament didn’t go the way that the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knights baseball team might have liked, their season is still alive. The Knights qualified for the VISAA Division III state tournament. “We’re a lower seed, but we still have a chance,” coach James Poore said. The Knights fell in the semifinals of the conference tournament. “We didn’t hit the ball well enough,” Poore said. “We didn’t drive people in when we had the opportunity. We had good pitching.
Noa gave us a good effort. We just didn’t hit the ball well enough.” The Knights are the sixth seed in the tournament and faced No. 3 seed Carlisle School on May 16. Poore knows of Carlisle and said “they’re the exact opposite” of the Knights. “They play a ton of small ball,” he said. “They bunt, they hit-and-run. They don’t score runs in bunches, but consistently put pressure on you. It’s going to be a challenge. If we hit the ball well, we have a shot.” Poore said that the seniors on his team will be who they look to going into the state tournament. “We need to get back to doing the things that we were doing earlier in the season,” Poore
said. “I think it comes down to the four seniors. We’ll go as far as they take us. Everyone starts with a 0-0 record now. The sixth seed can win just as much as the one seed can. We’ve been a lower seed before and come through the bracket. It just depends on how much you want to win.” If the Knights advance, they’ll play the winner of Southampton Academy and Roanoke Catholic on May 18 at Shepherd Stadium. The championship game for Division III is May 20 at 11 a.m., also at Shepherd Stadium.
at back-to-back VCC titles. After ending the regular season on May 4 with a tie against Isle of Wight in a 2-2 final, the Knights advanced to the final after a double overtime win over Richmond Christian on May 10. The Knights were scheduled to face Brunswick Academy on May 12, but weather postponed the game to a later date.

WOODSON
Woodson said that he was influenced by a lot of coaches, which left a significant imprint on him. He knew that he wanted to have a career track where he was involved in athletics. As he had a family, they all followed in his footprints along the athletic path. “This is a family thing,” he said. “My family is into athletics and this is what the Woodsons do. I’ve been lucky…my wife supported it, my kids participated in athletics. It’s what my family is about and it’s my life’s passion. I’m so fortunate that my family supported it.” Woodson’s children have been a part of several significant teams in Indians athletics history. His daughter, Ann Marie, played on the 1993 softball team that won the first state championship.
BOYS TENNIS Powhatan’s boys tennis team finished their season in the Conference 20 tournament on May 9. The Indians fell to Hanover 50.
GIRLS TENNIS Powhatan’s girls tennis team ended their season in the first round of the Conference 20 tournament. Monacan defeated the Indians 5-2.
SOFTBALL Powhatan softball defeated Albemarle 7-1 on May 10. On May 9, the Indians took down Louisa 8-2. Tori Gilbert had 3 RBIs.
One of his sons, Jay, played on the first football championship team in 1999. Paul, his other son, played on one of only two district championship teams for basketball in the Indians history in 2006. His wife, Joann, in particular has been extremely supportive of Woodson throughout his career. “She’s been so supportive,” he said. “She gets it. She’s grounded and she understands it.” Among the list of people Woodson wanted to thank, he listed former Powhatan High School principal Traci Omohundro as well as current principal Mike Massa for their support. “At first, I was doing athletics and doing a bunch of classes and she understood the importance and time constraints of the job,” he said. “She made it so I could get out
of the classroom and spend more time with the student athletes. Mr. Massa has been wonderful to work with in his first year as well and he couldn’t be more supportive.” Woodson said that there’s a lot that he will remember when he looks back on his time as athletic director, but is also looking forward to what he’ll be able to do with his time. “The memories of the kids, the memories of the coaches and colleagues, teachers of my children,” he said. “There’s just an unbelievable amount of memories. I have my family…I have five grandchildren and counting. I love golf, it’s my hobby. I have plenty of things to keep me busy. I’m looking forward to being able to focus on football and put 100 percent into football.”
