Powhatan sees construction boom By Laura McFarland News Editor

P

OWHATAN – Powhatan County is still growing, and that will become increasingly evident in the near future as several construction projects continue or get underway in the county. The rate of development is increasing in Powhatan, although not uncontrollably so, said Bret Schardein, director of community development for the county. Instead, the county is continuing to see a steady increase from where it was during the recession. “We are still seeing steady increase in the number of building permits for single-family homes, commercial applications, and commercial inquiries. It is all a steady trend upwards,” he said. Some of the construction disruption residents will have noticed are state or local projects, with the most notable being the construction of the new middle school and a joint transportation facility in the Village area and the project to widsee DEVELOPMENT pg. 8

POWHATAN – The men, women and children who came together 150 years ago to form Little Zion Baptist Church didn’t have much, but they had each other and

their faith. Founded only two years after the end of the Civil War and the abolishment of slavery, the church was borne out of a desire of local freed slaves to have a place of their own for their families to worship, see LITTLE ZION, pg. 5

If the case goes to trial, Travis Ball could face the death penalty, according to Deputy Capital Defender Jennifer Stanton from Norfolk. Ball is charged with capital murder, which is punishable by death or life in prison, in the fatal shooting of Walter of Powhatan on May 26 in Mosby Court. It’s up to Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Herring to take death off the table — which hasn’t happened yet. “Mr. Herring made it clear that if this goes to trial that death will be on the table,” Stanton told Circuit Court Judge Beverly Snuckals. The trial date was set on Tuesday, July 25 for two weeks starting Oct. 9, 2018, giving both prosecution and defense more than a year to prepare. Learned Barry, who

But Snuckals deferred to Stanton, who has tried four other capital cases — two at the state level and two at the federal level — and said it typically takes 18 to 20 months to prepare for a capital trial. Snuckals warned the attorneys not to delay with pretrial motions and proceedings because the date would not be further delayed.
